Director Rob Reiner's When Harry Met Sally... was about a relationship beginning; The Story of Us is about a relationship possibly coming to an end. Bruce Willis plays a comedy writer who chafes at what he sees as his wife's lack of spontaneity; Michelle Pfeiffer, who creates crossword puzzles, stews over what she sees as her husband's irresponsibility. The arc of their separation is interspliced with glimpses and scenes from their marriage--a combination of high points (the proposal, the births of their two children), low points (screaming fights), and the in-between (sessions with marriage counselors, moments in bed staring at the TV). Reiner indicates the passage of time by Willis and Pfeiffer's various hairstyles, and they occasionally let their hair act for them, but at other points their performances are sincere and deeply felt. The sheer power of the themes--the inevitability of conflict in a relationship, the necessity and difficulty of growth--give the movie a degree of emotional force, and there's no doubt that everyone who's gone through a difficult period in their marriage (which is just about every married couple) will find something to connect with. However, there isn't a lot of chemistry between the two leads. In one sequence Willis and Pfeiffer go to Venice to rekindle their old spark and find themselves hounded by another couple, the Kirbys from Cleveland, who are loud, crass, boring, and oblivious. Nonetheless, the Kirbys have a buoyancy that the glossy and elegant stars never quite manage; if The Story of Us had been the story of them, it might have been a better story to watch. --Bret Fetzer

Best Save for any relationship.......2007-01-19

This is an outstanding real life movie. I think anyone who considers divorce should watch this movie first. The life situations are so real that you feel like you are part of their relationship. It has great acting by both. Everyone has relationship problems sometimes, this movie makes you realize why you want to save it and than anything can be saved!!! A+++++++++++++

The story of a typical love-hate marriage.......2006-11-27

Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer delighted audiences in this 1999 romance comedy about a typical love-hate marriage,of course,filled with a low level of profanity,some of it spoken by director Rob Reiner who had a supporting role in the film. Great moral support from Mrs. Tom Hanks aka Rita Wilson.

The fine line between schmaltz and reality.......2006-08-09

Been there, done that. Not with as much panache; but anyone who has been through a breakup with kids ... well, it's easy to relate. I would recommend this movie to hopeless romantics and folks who love to watch a movie that makes them smile. I've found as I've grown older, I want my entertainment to BE entertaining. There is too much 'stark reality' in the world for me to want to see it played out on my TV thinly disguised as entertainment. And the 'Story of Us' is very entertaining. After you watch 'Story of Us,' try 'Bye, Bye Love.' Just another movie to make you smile.

The ups and downs of marriage........2006-06-08

The Story of Us starring Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer is a witty and clever look at a marriage falling apart after 15 years. This film is serious and funny, I love the flashbacks and yes there a lot of them but it shows how their relationship developed and why they have problems just like every married couple in America. In my opinion, this film is Rob Reiner's third best film, his two best being Stand By Me and When Harry met Sally. Pfeiffer's performance at the end of the film is spectacular, her dialogue is so long and impressive, she just goes on and on, never skipping a beat, who knew she could be so comical? The Story of Us is a fresh, rewarding look at two lives who must decide if they want to go their separate ways or remain an "us." You just have to watch and see what happens, enjoy!

I think this movie is excellent for all those relationships going through hardship. It's a true eye poper.

Proud Black Resistance.......2007-04-07

Though the screen first says "American Experience," the techniques and style alone prove that it was not made by the series. Plus, I don't remember the series being around in 1990 when this was produced.

Along those lines, this was made in film, rather than video. There are no cheesy reenactments, instead props serve as symbols for historical facts. This work only had one historian interviewed; the other interviewees were the descendants of slaves and slave masters.

Abolition doesn't even come up in the first third of the documentary. I think the makers wanted to emphasize why slaves would want to run away first. I learned that Nat Turner was a minister, not an organic revolutionary. I learned that one of every 40 slaves ran away successfully. Not only did they flee to Canada, but Mexico and the Seminole Nation as well. I love learning more details about familiar topics.

This would be a good documentary to watch in high school and junior high history classes. The biracial interviewees and abolitionists may make white Americans not feel "threatened" by the subject of American slavery.

This one of the best anime movies I've ever seen (even dubbed version).

In space a war rages between two races, the all female Solnoids and the biomechanical Paranoids. The story revolves around the crew of an ill-fated solnoid transport ship called star-leaf. With most of the crew dead the remaining 7 crew members must fight their way to the new solnoid homeworld Chaos...before their enemies get their first.

I have been an anime lover for over 20 years. Now if my book were to be made into a movie, I'd definitely want it to be an anime. But enough of that.
Gall Force is my 4th most favorite anime of all (behind Fist of the North Star, Vampire Hunter D and Wicked City.) I first saw Gall Force on Sci Fi channel. I was very impressed with the story, its plot, its characterization and drama. This story is about an interplanetary battle of the sexes. Literally all of the people on the good side are women. They pilot a starship called the Star Leaf. I do not yet have this on video yet, but I plan to get it. I hope soon that parts 2 and 3 will be dubbed in english. I don't really like watching subtitled films.

Great movie.......2002-04-10

I thought that it was a great twist on the old Genesis story. So long as the taking of religious stories and telling them in a new way doesn't bug you, then watch this movie, even if you are not big into religion, it is a good movie anyways.

Taking the world's most universally recognized legend and putting a new twist on it, ''Gall Force: Eternal Story'' is an epic adventure that you don't soon forget and that you will want to watch again and again.

The story opens in the midst of a full-scale battle raging in the depths of outer space between two persistently warring races: the somewhat indescribable cyborg ''Paranoids'' and the all-female humanoid race called ''Solnoids'' (which raises the intriguing question of how they reproduce... but let's suspend logic for the moment).

The Paranoid/Solnoid wars have been waging for centuries, and diplomats on both sides have grown weary of the never-ending battle and have entered into a secret covenant where they have mutually devised a risky plan which they hope will act as a buffer between the two feuding races and hopefully bring both sides to the table to begin suing for peace. But in order for this mission to be successful, their joint activities must operate covertly and be kept a closely guarded secret from everyone on both sides -- especially from the military arms of the two warring factions, each of whom would stop at nothing and spare no effort to recover the ''experimental project'' for ''their'' side to exploit. The details of this ''Top Secret'' diplomatic gambit are entrusted to a single Solnoid who's been dispatched as a secret agent to infiltrate the ranks of a ship's crew to insure that the objective proceeds successfully without a hitch.

Forced to make the leap into lightspeed out of its surrounding blazing deathtrap, a sole Solnoid spaceship, the ''Star Leaf,'' has been targeted for the for the infiltration of both the Solnoid/Paranoid agent and the secret ''experiment.'' The Star Leaf's escape course is to a distant star system: Their destination is a 'new home world' -- a terra-formed planet moon the Solnoid have given the name ''Chaos.'' Chaos is the satellite companion to the planet ''Terra,'' which the Solnoid refer to as ''the planet that lives on its own'' (which raises another question of logic ... ''Why not just inhabit Terra from the very beginning?'' -- but again, let's try to overlook this notable flaw in the story).

In their hasty attempt at escape from all of the senseless slaughter taking place around them, the crew of the Star Leaf must constantly deal with numerous emerging deadly threats, from pursuing warships, equipment malfunctions, the real possibility of mutually assured destruction, and the presence of a sinister looking alien life form which stalks the remaining crew throughout their space vessel. The surviving members of the Star Leaf's crew must also try to understand the meaning and significance of a bizarre precognitive dream they all share involving a mysterious Solnoid-like alien creature which could either be a Paranoid brainwashing and mind-controlling ploy or the key to ending the hostilities between the Paranoid and Solnoid races.

The moon Chaos becomes the final battleground in the Paranoid/Solnoid war as deception, treachery, and the lust for power and military advantage overtake reason, diplomacy and visions of unconditional peace.

Much more enjoyable in the 'English dubbed' version (which is something of a rare experience in anime DVDs), ''Gall Force: Eternal Story'' often catches you off your guard with where you think the story is going to take you and, in a manner much like in the ''SCREAM'' movies, messes with your head as it relates to who lives, who dies, and who the ''bad guys'' are.

A bit more attention to detail could (should) have been paid to the animation itself, in my opinion, and a few things about the story could have been smoothed out as well (but hey... this IS ''Japanese Animation,'' after all), but apart from this feature film's only real problem of the 'fingernails-on-chalkboard' screeching of the original Japanese voice actors, this movie does not fail to deliver: It hooks you right away and reels you all the way in from the opening scene to the emotionally charged climatic ending. Don't push past this one.

THIS MOVIE IS GOOD! The plot may be very confusing in the end,but I don't care. I have watched this movie a good few times and I have never got tired of it.
It certainly does deserve 5 stars!

An American hero (of color).......2005-03-30

With the recent deaths of Patsy Mink and Robert Matsui, Daniel Inouye is one of the few senior Asian-American federal politicians left. In this documentary, you found out about his life and accomplishments. This work would be an excellent viewing piece for Asian-American boys in need of role models or Asian-Americans interested in entering politics. Perhaps people could view it alongside George Takei's autobiography.

There is a racist myth which says that all Asians are foreigners. However, here, one sees Inouye's active involvement in World War II, the Iran-Contra hearings, the statehood of Hawaii, and other seminal historical events. The work illustrates his status as an underappreciated American leader of color. Though the work mentions that he has critics, it's mostly an almost entirely praising piece.

Senator Inouye is an octogenarian and must be honored for his lengthy tenure in politics. However, his old man's voice may annoy or bore some viewers. On the other hand, his status as wise and sweet old man may delight others.

Politicians such as Bob Dole are in this film. Thus, the cast is bipartisan and multiracial. However, I wish some Black or Latino Congresspersons would have been interviewed in this work. Inouye received blood transfusions as a soldier from African-American donors. Inouye has also been a big supporter of indigenous people's rights. So because he is a strong promoter of person-of-color unity, it would have been nice to see a non-white peer concur with that fact.

The narrator for this documentary is an unknown person with a dry voice. I wish they had used an Asian-American male actor for the job. I think Pat Morita, B.D. Wong, or Russell Wong would have been excellent narrators. Harvey Fierstein did an outstanding job narrating the documentary on Harvey Milk, Why couldn't Senator Inouye open the door for another Asian-American male in this piece?

Though people of color make up one quarter of the American population, there are only five people of color in the Senate (one-twentieth of the members). They are Inouye, Akaka, Salazar, Martinez (a Republican, :( ), and my well-praised Senator Barack Obama. There are no women of color in this arena since Carole Mosely Braun left office in the mid-1990s. Daniel Inouye is a pioneer and I found this documentary to be an inspiring gem.
