This 1954 musical remake of Four Daughters stars Doris Day as a well-bred New England woman who marries a chip-on-his-shoulder musician (Frank Sinatra). Lots of tears, yes, but this version of Fannie Hurst's novel is considerably cheered up from the 1938 tearjerker. Dorothy Malone and Elizabeth Fraser play Day's sisters (a fourth sister present in Four Daughters was written out), Robert Keith is the paterfamilias to a bunch of musical prodigies, and Gig Young is entertaining as the composer-boarder who tries deflecting the sisters' interest in him by bringing Sinatra home one day. Both Day and Sinatra really shine in this, and the songs include the Johnny Richards-Caroline Leigh title tune, which became part of Sinatra's standard repertoire. --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars Where did Warner Bros. go?.......2007-07-01

I have the Republic Pictures/Artisan dvd release of the 1954 Doris Day/Frank Sinatra film "Young at Heart" When released, this was a Warner Bros. picture. However, a great deal of effort has been made to completely erase that fact from this release. There is no Warner Bros. logo at the beginning. The original main title opening has been completely cut out. It opens with the credit "Doris Day and Frank Sinatra" and Sinatra singing the words "Fairy tales can come true ..." with no orchestral introdution. This credit remains on the screen for an uncomfortably long period of time - it couldn't have been like that in the original release. Then, at the end of the film, Sinatra and Day finish singing "You My Love", there's a little bit of dialouge between the family members, the song "Young at Heart" fades in (Sinatra singing), the camera pulls away from the scene and all of a sudden we ABRUPTLY cut to a blue screen that says "The End" as the song comes to and end and the end title music (which would normally have accompanied the Warner Bros. logo) plays. Is there anyone out there that can explain what is going on here?! It looks absolutely AWFUL. If the rights to the film have passed on to someone else, why couldn't they have just affixed their logo (if it's really necessary) prior to the beginning and efter the end of the original credits? Doris, Frank and Warner Bros. deserve better. The color and sound is quite good in this release but the whole thing is rendered second rate by this tacky handling of the credits.

5 out of 5 stars Young at Heart.......2007-06-27

Sinatra was paired opposite fellow crooner Day in Gordon Douglas's colorful "Young At Heart," a romantic melodrama (with music) based on 1938's "Four Daughters." It takes Sinatra forty minutes to show up, but it's worth the wait. Not only does he sing some fabulous songs (including the title tune), but his Barney is a complex, vulnerable character refreshingly different from the singer's swaggering sixties persona. Frank and Doris, who both started as big-band singers, share terrific chemistry under Douglas's direction, making you wish they'd collaborated more often.

5 out of 5 stars Day and Sinatra a Great Duo.......2007-04-11

This light hearted film was enjoyable with superb songs and fine acting as well. Wonderful cast headed by Doris Day, Frank Sinatra, Dorothy Malone, and Ethel Barrymore.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD MUSIC, GOOD ACTING, GOOD OLD FASHIONED MOVIE.......2007-01-10

I WISH THERE WERE MORE MOVIES LIKE THIS. THEY JUST DON'T MAKE THEM ANYMORE, BUT THEN WE DON'T HAVE THE GREAT ACTORS AND ACTRESSES LIKE THAT ANYMORE EITHER. VERY ENJOYABLE.

1 out of 5 stars Unfortunate lack of sub-titles.......2006-12-16

A friend loaned me her VHS copy of this movie, which I loved - - as much of it as I could understand. When actors speak too fast, or don't move their mouths with some of their lines, or lower their voices to a whisper, I don't understand the words. I need English sub-titles, which this movie doesn't offer on DVD. So I am not buying it. (Producers, take note!)

Producers of DVDs should understand that there are many types of folks out here who profit greatly by having sub-titles available. My DVD player can't handle "closed captioning" for the hard of hearing, and I'm sure there are others that can't as well. A friend half my age graciously clicked on the sub-titles when I visited her to view a film, & afterwards, she said, "My goodness! I caught things I hadn't heard before!" And she has perfect hearing!

There must be many people out there who refrain from buying a DVD because they can't see the dialog printed on-screen. There are several movies I would have loved to have, but have not purchased for this reason. Knowing what's going on makes for greater enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars Acessible Yoga for Every Body.......2006-06-11

I love this DVD. It's the only one I use consistently. The teacher is excellent. Describes moves very well.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Gentle Routine.......2004-08-04

I just finished this program a few minutes ago and wanted to share my thoughts on it.

As a person with a daily yoga practice for the last seven years, a participant in regular classes, and with a home practice that incorporates programs of this sort(over 70 VHS/DVDs at last count) I would say that overall I really liked this.

While my favorite type of yoga practice is vinyasa flow based, I do like to alternate with Gentle programs.

While I was doing this particular program I was thinking it might be a program that would even be gentle enough for my mom (who is in her 60's), but as it continued I would have to say that there were a few spots where I felt it might be a little unsafe for her (and she has some experience with Yoga from classes and uses the Yoga Zone Basics 5 tape set).

Even though Ms. Ward explains things very well and stresses to work at your own level and that "Yoga should never hurt", there are no modifications shown. For someone without previous experience of Yoga this could be a problem.

There were a few times where I felt that had I not had the experience I have doing yoga that I could have caused some strain , particularly in my knees. I always listen to my body and don't try to always do exactly what the instructor is doing if I feel it's not sound for me at that given moment, but that has come with years of experience.

Still, as an overall routine I did like this a lot and I can see that I'll use it quite frequently on my "gentle days".

I really like her sequencing of the poses, the pacing, and the fact that there is a long relaxation at the end.

It's about an hour long, but it really goes by quite quickly. I think Susan Winter Ward is an excellent instructor who has a great feel for teaching and a really soothing voice (which I find really helps in terms of the "feel" of the practice).

So, in spite of my concerns I would highly recommend this practice but I think it is probably good to have at least a little bit of experience with yoga to be on the safe side.

    Namaste

5 out of 5 stars Gentle, but challenging.......2007-04-24

I have tried lots of yoga dvds and normally either the instructors are annoying, or they go too fast, or the workout is insanely challenging, or the music drives me nuts. But this one doesn't have any of those disadvantages. It's a well-designed workout that you can use at your own pace. I must say I was a bit embarrassed at first that the aged participants in the video were far more nimble than I (even though I think at least one of them is over 30 years older!) but I've managed to get over that mental hurdle, and have increased my own flexibility pretty significantly. Highly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-03-02

I have used this DVD many times. I enjoy it a lot. The descriptions are very precise and the instructor is good. I would say I am a beginner when it comes to yoga.

1 out of 5 stars Just another yoga routine, nothing special.......2006-04-02

This is just a regular yoga practice, not at all what it purports to be by the title. There is a surprising lack of useful information about women's health and hormones, and how various poses are of benefit to women. This yoga routine probably requires more energy than many perimenopausal or menopausal women have, if they haven't been treating their symptoms which can include flat out exhaustion. Far more useful is Kathy Smith's "Moving Through Menopause" DVD/video, which is packed with a huge amount of helpful information and interviews with various experts on the many ways of healing, as well as a wonderful restorative yoga routine and other added features. Unfortunately I bought this prior to hearing about "Moving Through Menopause". Don't waste your money on this one.
