Bruce Willis's first starring vehicle was this 1987 comedy by Blake Edwards (Victor/Victoria), in which the actor plays a yuppie set up on a blind date with a beautiful blonde (Kim Basinger). Everything goes swimmingly until Willis does what he was warned not to do: give the lady alcohol, which causes her to get entirely out of control. The one-note joke basically turns the film into a succession of set pieces in which Willis has to keep up with Basinger, bail her out of trouble, or get out of the way of her hotheaded former boyfriend (John Larroquette). Willis is fine, Basinger is impressively unhinged, Larroquette is hilarious, and Phil Hartman has a nice role as the friend who set up Willis's evening from hell. The slapstick shtick is classic Edwards, but the film is not Edwards at his most inspired. Consider Blind Date the work of a good filmmaker in a holding pattern. --Tom Keogh

Blessed by casual charm and sophisticated wit, Kissing Jessica Stein does for same-sex romance what Annie Hall did for straight neurotics. The influence of Woody Allen is keenly felt on this resourceful New York comedy (expanded from an off-Broadway play), especially when cowriter and costar Jennifer Westfeldt channels Diane Keaton's "la-di-da" nervousness as Jessica Stein, a romantically frustrated heterosexual copyeditor who impulsively answers a personal ad from a bisexual woman. Helen (cowriter Heather Juergensen) is as relaxed about lesbian love as Jessica is anxious, but they click as lovers, and so does the movie's delightful exploration of their budding relationship, which is further complicated by Jessica's yenta-like mother (Tovah Feldshuh) and a former boyfriend (Scott Cohen) who's now Jessica's boss. While acknowledging the serious repercussions of Jessica's bisexual flirtation, Kissing Jessica Stein takes its characters on a smart, compassionate journey of self-discovery that's as truthfully observant as it is gently entertaining. --Jeff Shannon

Sex and the single girl gets a fresh new spin in this "very funny movie"! (Joel Siegel, Good morning America) Fed up with her fruitless search for "Mr. Right" and tired of blind dates from hell, attractive journalist Jessica Stein whimsically responds to a classified ad - from Helen! Making and breaking new rules of dating as they go, the two women muddle through an earnest but hilarious courtship that blurs the lines between friendship and romantic love in this "smashing romantic comedy" (Rolling Stone)
Customer Reviews:
The best romantic comedy of '02.......2007-05-26
"Kissing Jessica Stein" features no major (or even minor) stars, a low budget (about $1 million), and a taboo topic. But the film, which never would have been made without the perseverance of screenwriters and co-stars Heather Juergensen and Jennifer Westfeldt, is a refreshing mix of quirky indie spirit and classic romantic-comedy sentiment.
Westfeldt plays Jessica Stein, a neurotic New York copy editor who's fed up with the dating game. If having her overprotective Jewish mother set her up with undesirable suitors wasn't bad enough, she also has to deal with one bad date after another, not to mention working for her ex-boyfriend (a solid Scott Cohen).
The movie gets off to a somewhat rocky star, with the humor coming across as forced and the scenarios boasting a been-there-seen-that feel.
Fortunately, when Jessica decides to answer a personal ad in the "Women Seeking Women" section, the film takes off. The first date between Jessica and Helen Cooper (Heather Juergensen), a downtown hipster with bisexual preferences, is beautifully written and acted. Jessica's gradual transition from feeling awkward to being intrigued is completely believable.
From then on out, with the exception of a few minor lapses, "Kissing Jessica Stein" is a fresh and funny romantic comedy that explores the ups and downs of the blossoming relationship between Jessica and Helen. Juergensen and Westfeldt, aided by a solid supporting cast, deliver plenty of laughs. Case in point: a highly amusing scene in which Jessica and Helen prod two unknowing, would-be male suitors into telling them why two women together are so sexy.
But "Kissing Jessica Stein" isn't all light laughs. With the help of director Charles Herman-Wurmfeld, Juergensen and Westfeldt dig into some highly effective dramatic scenes that round out the characters and give the film a little more depth. A nicely shot scene in which the two quarrel about Jessica's unwillingness to tell her family and friends about their lesbian relationship packs a powerful emotional wallop. Ditto a heartfelt exchange between Jessica and her mom late in the film.
While director Herman-Wurmfeld does a fine job of making this low-budget pic look like its budget is much larger, he wisely leaves the focus on the actors and the film's excellent script. Westfeldt, who brings to mind an indie Lisa Kudrow, digs beyond sitcom superficiality to find the longing beneath Jessica's perfectionist leanings. The charismatic Juergensen, tough yet vulnerable, is superb as Helen -- keep your eye on this promising actress.
It's a kick to see two talented young women sticking it to the male-dominated movie scene and creating a top-notch film through their perseverance and talent. Anyone who enjoys a good romantic comedy and understands how rarely they come along won't want to miss "Kissing Jessica Stein."
Great movie!.......2007-05-18
It's about a very conservative/neurotic woman who's fed up with men, and on a whim decides to try dating a woman instead. An all around good movie. It made me laugh, almost made me cry... I think they could've done a little more with the ending, but I thought it was still pretty good. It's even a good movie to have your boyfriend/husband watch with you(not super-girly). I would recommend this movie to just about anyone.
love it.......2007-03-22
i think i am being a bit bias, but i love this movie. the seller sent it out relatively quickly as well.
A Great Love Story.......2007-01-14
A lesbian love story, Kissing Jessica Stein is cute and sweet. Jessica is fed up of crappy dates with crappy men, so she takes a chance on a personal ad and begins dating Helen. Jessica finds everything she ever wanted in Helen, but keeps the relationship a secret because Jessica's not a lesbian. The relationship eventually deteriorates, but the experience gives Jessica a new outlook on life.
A heart-felt, somewhat disturbing, romantic comedy...with lesbians........2006-08-29
The movie "Kissing Jessica Stein" is at once a silly comedy, a disturbing look at sexual frustration, misanthropic relations with fellow humans, and promiscuity.
The character of Jessica Stein is a woman too smart, and too neurotic, for her own good. She feels that she knows herself so well that she has no reason to try anything outside the norm of her everyday routine. She doesn't really understand how to respond to men who are interested in her and the beginning of the movie paints the majority of men as sniveling, unintelligent, selfish creatures. I'm sure a large number of men have these undesirable qualities, but I assure you, we are not all this way. After going through these stereotypical, mildly amusing, but altogether badly written characters that are supposed to represent the dating scene of the time our love lost heroine is embattling her way through loneliness.
Enter Helen. A woman who is lost in a triangle of sexual intensity, bordering on promiscuous. A woman who also knows enough about life to understand that selfishness is something that is a natural part of the world, and therefore acceptable. In a conversation within the movie, and I won't spoil anything too much, Jessica makes a comment about a group of people behaving selfishly because of their pursuit of spiritual enlightenment and happiness and Helen responds with, "They're just doing their thing. Some people smoke pot, some people chant."
The most interesting aspect to the movie is that fact that it was written by Jennifer Westfeldt and Heather Juergensen, or Jessica Stein and Helen Cooper, respectively. The acting in the movie is, for the most part, wonderful. Jennifer Westfeldt's ditzy, air-headed-yet-intelligent personae in the film will get on your nerves every ten or fifteen minutes, but she presents the character in a believable manner. The one-face-for-every-emotion approach by Heather Juergensen would seem to be something horrible, but, for some strange reason, works. She uses the same face throughout the movie, but it actually conveys every emotion that she is trying to portray. Throw in totally believable performances by Scott Cohen as Josh Myers, the jerk ex-boyfriend of Jessica, Jackie Hoffman, as Jessica's loud best-friend and all the other actors/actresses in the film and you have quite a nice little comedy. I give it a 4.

With its title inspired by the notorious Black Dahlia murder case, The Blue Gardenia throws a twist into the story by making the mystery woman not the victim but the suspect in a lurid murder case. Anne Baxter, playing a virginal blonde with almost breathless innocence, impulsively accepts a blind date after receiving a "Dear Jane" letter from her boyfriend in Korea. Raymond Burr oozes slime as the lothario who plots his seduction with cynical calculation ("For drinks, Polynesian Pearl Divers, and don't spare the rum!") and the naive Baxter is easy prey, until she fights back against his advances with a fireplace poker and stumbles home. Waking up the next morning with the past evening a veritable blank, she discovers herself the prime suspect in a murder case trumpeted into a sensationalistic headline story by calculating columnist Richard Conte. Fritz Lang transforms the rather conventional low-budget thriller into a paranoid nightmare, his cheap sets and flat backdrops creating a tawdry world peopled by cynics and opportunists preying on the guileless, and Baxter makes every guilt-ridden moment palpable. Like in many film noir thrillers, the pat conclusion seems wholly arbitrary, the product of the Hollywood happy-ending machine. However, Lang's film isn't about the mystery, but the experience of an innocent whose single, desperate transgression turns her world upside down. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Fritz Lang's scathing critique of fifties America's hunger for bloodshed and scandal. Classic Hollywood film noir with a feminine twist, "The Blue Gardenia" stars Anne Baxter (All About Eve) as Norah Larkin, a working girl who wakes up a murderess after passing out in the apartment of brutish playboy Harry Prebble (Raymond Burr). Branded "The Blue Gardenia" by a sensational columnist (Richard Conte), Norah dodges dragnets, informants and the cruel hand of fate as she struggles to conceal her involvement with Prebble and to remember the details of her ill fated night. As her hopes for justice fade, she decides to gamble her future on the journalist who transformed her into such a notorious public figure. Enhancing the melancholy mood of the film is the haunting theme song arranged by Nelson Riddle and performed to perfection by Nat "King" Cole.

I thought this was a fairly good film. The surpise ending was a treat. i particularly enjoyed the performances of Anne Baxter and Anne Sothern
A Bargain.......2006-07-01
This is a minor film noir but has a great performance from Raymond Burr (pre-Perry Mason) as a louse. The rest of the cast put on a good show and is well worth the reduced price from Amazon.
Good Mystery , if Not Great Noir........2006-04-03
"The Blue Gardenia" opens with a plausible plotline: A nice, slightly naïve, working girl (Ann Baxter) goes on a date with a sleazebag (Raymond Burr). In early 50s Hollywood, that's how Burr was cast. This was before the "Perry Mason" series made him so respectable. The jerk gets Baxter drunk on exotic drinks and tries to put the moves on her. To ward him off, she hits RB on the head with a poker-and passes out. The next day, Burr is dead and guess who the main suspect is? Director Fritz Lang uses an old ploy: The audience suspects Baxter is innocent but Anne blacked out and doesn't know what she did! The L.A. cops are looking only for a female murderess known as "The Blue Gardenia", named for the night club Burr took her. An enterprising, oily reporter (Richard Conte) gets involved, looking only for a good headline and to sell papers. He claims to be helping Baxter/the Gardenia but winds up getting her arrested! And then? And then Conte discovers a "certain clue", proving the good girl cannot be the Gardenia! BG winds down to an inevitable 1950s "happy ending". That is the film's major weak point. A second is the rushed resolution. It appears that Warner Brothers was determined to achieve a strict 90 minute run time. Yet a few more minutes at the end might have added some needed spice and tension. Silver and Ward's "Film Noir" opined that BG was shot in 50s b& w Television style, not the standard "noir" format. Other amazon reviewers made the same observation, but this aspect is not fatal. Though it is not truly a noir release, BG is a perfectly decent murder mystery. It has an engaging and offbeat cast! Those who can live with the small amount of aforementioned baggage should still enjoy watching BG.
Film noir with a touch of femininity and hits of MacCarthyism.......2006-02-26
I'm probably biased regarding this film as I love film noir and I love Fritz Lang. I have not yet been disappointed by any of his films! I do recommend this film to those of you who may have the same interests as me or for those who just want to see a well-made thriller of the 1950s.
Fritz Lang is probably best known for his "German Expressionist" films like Metropolis. It must not be forgotten, however, that he had a long and accomplished Hollywood career. The Blue Gardenia came at a time when Fritz Lang had already directed some great film noirs like Scarlet Street, Women in the Window and The Secret Beyond the Door and he was yet to make The Big Heat.
What makes The Blue Gardenia different from other film noirs, is perhaps the weight of the female characters. Although many film noirs have great female portrayals, like the phenomenal Norma Desmond in Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard, few make the women the lead characters and men only secondary characters. This is, however the case in The Blue Gardenia where we follow closely Norah's sufferings and her two housemates (also female). This adds a notion of feminism as we are horrified by Norah's destiny in the film and the accusations brought against her.
Of course, this film was made in 1953 at the end of the age of MacCarthyism. Fritz Lang himself suffered from suspicions of being communist friendly, but he was never charged or presented before HUAC. Instead he could not find work in Hollywood for a couple of years. In the film, we can catch the atmosphere or suspicion, untrustworthiness, hesitation and slander that was so clearly a part of the witch hunting in Hollywood and in the rest of the US. Can Norah really have committed murder? Who can she trust? Her friends? The journalist Casey Mayo? And is it alright to make accusations and create slanders publicly in a newspaper? These are just some of the questions one could ask once one has seen the film...
It may not be Fritz Lang's best film or the best Film Noir, but it's still worth seeing!
Too Saccharine for a Murder Mystery. Too Bland All Around........2005-09-08
"The Blue Gardenia" is among director Fritz Lang's lesser films. It is often categorized as noir, but is only vaguely so. Adapted from the short story "Gardenia" by Very Caspary, it's more mystery/romance, like Caspary's "Laura", which made a far superior film. The cinematography by Nicholas Musuraca is in high-key style that was coming back into fashion in the 1950s, a major departure from the low-key lighting of the 1940s that became iconic of film noir. "The Blue Gardenia" looks an awful lot like 1950s television, which is alluded to in one bit of dialogue. It's placement during the Korean War and the plethora of post-war gender stereotypes also place this film firmly in the 1950s thematically. Ironically, Fritz Lang made "The Big Heat" the same year, which is solid film noir and perhaps his only truly great American film.
Norah Larkin (Anne Baxter) is a pretty, young switchboard operator with a boyfriend to whom she is devoted stationed in Korea. She cheerfully spends her evenings at home and never dates other men, wishing to remain faithful to her man overseas. But on her birthday, she learns that her boyfriend has fallen in love with another woman. Distraught, Norah impulsively accepts a dinner invitation from artist and infamous lothario Harry Prebble (Raymond Burr). She drinks too much and gets herself right snookered, a situation which Harry tries to take advantage of. Prebble is found dead in his apartment the next day, and Norah can't remember what happened. Confused and afraid, she responds to newspaperman Casey Mayo (Richard Conte) who, looking for an angle, promised his newspaper would provide the murderer with legal assistance in exchange for an exclusive story.
I found the most striking aspect "The Blue Gardenia" to be how much it looks and feels like 1950s television. The concept of characters and gender relations had changed radically from the 1940s by the time this film was released in 1953. The men, exemplified in Harry Prebble and Casey Mayo, are conspicuously charming, egotistical, chauvinistic, predatory, and inexplicably irresistible to the ladies. The women are silly, chatty, and in need of rescuing. No one is interesting, and everyone is shallow. Add to that the cheesy "Blue Gardenia" restaurant , and the film is a little ridiculous. Nat King Cole performs "The Blue Gardenia"'s thoroughly mediocre theme song in the restaurant scene.
The DVD (Image Entertainment 2005): This print has occasional specks and spots, but most of it is clean. There are no bonus features or subtitles.

Typical '80's Cheesefest.......2005-09-14
Just finished watching this after having it for about a year or so and finally getting around to it. Well, I guess I could've waited even longer because it wasn't very good or really worth seeing at any particular time. I've seen worse so I was still able to sit through it and besides, it's loaded with typical nondescript 1980's music by unknown acts (at least here in the States, probably), bad acting, bad photography, bad special effects, bad writing and bad directing, so watching it was a kind of excercise in sadomasochistic patience. If you're a connoisseur of bad films then this one will certainly delight you.
The Adventures of Sonar Boy and the case of the Killer Cabbie..........2005-08-28
So what is the main appeal of the film Blind Date (1984)? It's not the acting, and definitely not the story...well, if you're a Star Trek fan, how about the chance to see a topless Kirstie Alley (Lt. Saavik in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan) and Marina Sirtis (councilor Deanna Troi from the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" television series)? Four good reasons right there, if you ask me...produced, written, and directed by Nico Mastorakis (The Zero Boys, Ninja Academy), who's sort of a Greek Roger Corman, the film stars Joseph `I'm not Timothy' Bottoms (The Black Hole) and the aforementioned Kirstie Alley, albeit a much slimmer one than the Pier One/Jenny Craig pimpette we're familiar with today. Also appearing is James `Greg Marmalard' Daughton (Animal House, Spies Like Us), Lana Clarkson (Deathstalker, Barbarian Queen), a name certainly known to any lover of bad movies, and Keir Dullea, probably best known for his role as Dr. Dave Bowman in Stanley Kubrick's seminal science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)...you've come a long way, boyo...
The film starts out at a carnival, with a woman leaving via a cab. On arriving home, she strips (exposing some large nips), showers, and then hears a noise that she proceeds to investigate. Turns out, not only hasn't the cabbie left, but he's entered her home, perhaps for a better tip...nope, he's there to operate (literally) as he chloroforms the woman and pulls out a scalpel...we then switch to meet our main character named Jonathon Ratcliff (Bottoms), an American in Greece, working as an executive for an ad agency. During a swimsuit photo session in a mall (yes, that's a young Valeria Golino in a bikini), he thinks he recognizes one of the models as a girl from his past, but can't be sure...back at the office we meet Jonathan's braless girlfriend/co-worker Claire Simpson (Alley), to which they meet up again later at her place for Jonathon's birthday celebration which involves a little boom shakalaka with Claire (hello boobage), and I'm reminded of a saying involving not dipping your pen in the company ink...anyway, Jonathan becomes somewhat obsessive over the model he thinks is a woman from his past (turns out she suffered an incident, while in his company, one which he couldn't prevent) and begins stalking her, but ends up hurting himself badly after a chance meeting with a low hanging tree branch. Subsequently he's now blind, but learns of an experimental procedure involving sonar and a visual synthesizer that might allow him to see again. He signs up, and the operation's a success to some degree...he can see, by using implants in conjunction with a device that looks a hell of a lot like a Walkman, which creates only outlines sans the details, but hey, Atari-Vision is better than nothing, right? By chance, Jonathan witnesses one of the serial killer's murders, and now is being stalked by said killer, who picks up on the woman Jonathan thought he knew from so long ago...Jonathan realizes this, and now the hunted becomes the hunter as he must do what he was unable to do so long ago in protecting the woman he thinks is the girl he once loved...
I mentioned that Nico Mastorakis (who, by the way, sure likes breasts, as much as he shows them) reminds me of the Greek version of Roger Corman because they both make cheap films, often using actors who to gain popularity later in their careers, or else actors who were more popular, and have since fallen into the cinematic equivalent of purgatory, relegated to appearing in craptacular films like this...surprisingly, I thought the film had some really decent production values, but then again, it's probably fairly inexpensive to shoot in Greece than in America (the film is set and shot in Athens). As for the rest, well...touted as an erotic thriller, it was hardly erotic, and hardly thrilling, especially given the lack of interest in the characters. A bunch of topless women hardly qualifies as erotic, along with two characters I could care less about rolling around between the sheets. In terms of thrilling, the whole serial killer aspect was quite lame, especially since all we know is he's someone who drives a cab, all of his victims being comely woman who he just gave a lift to, and wears Velcro strapped shoes (which I thought were only worn by people unable to tie their own shoes like small children or extremely old men)...we know this because any shots featuring the killer are either annoying point of view (POV) shots, or even more annoying shots of the killer's extremities (his feet as he's walking, or his hands as he's preparing to `operate')...any halfway competent police force would have picked this guy up in relatively short order, but the movie is scattered with scenes of him attacking one woman after another...and this is where Marina Sirtis comes in...she's not a character in the story, but a victim. She plays a streetwalker who gets a ride home in the cab, and subsequently suffers the same fate as a number of others. I will say Ms. Sirtis had, at the time, an amazing set of sweater puppies, which we get to see in great detail...oh Councilor Troi! As far as Kirstie Alley's breakout scene, it is brief but there, and worth it...and, if you want to see more, watch the included featurette titled `The Films of Nico Mastorakis (Part One)' as they include the omitted footage of said scene, a good deal of it removed at the time for fear it would have been too racy. The plot is relatively straightforward, but complicated with a lot of nonsense like Jonathan, after becoming blind, venturing out into the world. He ends up in a subway, attacked by a gang of youths who appear to be rejects from the cast of West Side Story. Later on, after his operation and his somewhat restored vision, he returns to the subway where he was beaten and robbed under the pretense of being blind, hoping to confront those same street ruffians, and beats the snot out of them with the aide of a lead filled walking stick, which is about as violent as the film gets, as all of the serial killer sequences end right before he begins his cutting. And then there's the obsequious 80s rock musical scoring...egads! Too bad the killer didn't do away with the composer...that would have certainly been a victimless crime. All in all the film really isn't worth seeing, except if'n you got the Jones to see some boobage of starlets who later became famous (you know I do). If you're looking for a wonderfully suspenseful story featuring a blind character tormented by a sadistic killer, check out the 1968 film Wait Until Dark, featuring Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin.
The widescreen (1.85:1), enhanced for 16X9 TVs, picture on this DVD looks decent, but does contain minor print damage at a number of points. The DVD case claims this is a remastered director's cut, so I would have to hated to seen what it looked like prior. The audio comes through well, and claims Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, along with Dolby Digital Stereo. Special features include a trailer for the film, a featurette titled `The Films of Nico Mastorakis (Part One)', which runs about 56 minutes and is worth watching for the omitted Kirstie Alley romp scenes, isolated music tracks (oh the horror), filmographies/biographies, and previews for other Nico Mastorakis films including In the Cold of the Night (1991), Sky High (1985), Bloodstone (1988), and .com for Murder (2002). All in all 2 stars for the film, plus one extra for the fleshy pillows...
Cookieman108
By the way, after the credits end, there's text stating Jonathan Ratcliff, the main character in this film, will return in Run, Stumble, and Fall...I checked, and, surprisingly, no such films has yet to be made...wishful thinking on Mastorakis' part, I suppose...
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! .......2005-08-10
This is a B movie. But it takes itself too seriously and has no charm. The acting is wooden particularly that of Joseph Bottoms. The incongruous accents with greek thugs speaking in Clockwork Orange voices really jars. The little bits of gratuitous nudity are ludicrously interposed and if you buy the movie for the Kirstie Alley scenes you will feel fairly short changed.
The plot might have worked with a decent writer, decent director and better acting but it doesn't have any of these.
More blind than anything else........2005-05-02
I must say that this movie felt like a cross between THE TWILIGHT ZONE and SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE.
The plot of the story is very bizarre. First, there is a serial killer on the loose. Second, a man goes blind from a knock on the head. Third, the blind man uses a souped-up walkman that allows him to "see." Fourth, the blind man somehow is able to track down the serial killer.
If you choose to sit through the entire movie, then never mind the summation. However, the whole film comes across like a very long, drawn out joke that has a cheesy punchline. Also, the special effects are absurdly bad (even by 1980s standards).
About the only thing the movie has going for it is a healthy amount of nudity, including a topless scene of STAR TREK's Mirina Sirtis. There is a flash of Kirstie Alley's nipple, but it IS only a flash and it is in the dark. Not enough to justify the cost of the DVD.
If you like to see "B" movies with "A" movie actors, this one might be worth seeing - for curiousity's sake. I have no idea how Kirstie Alley ended up in this one after being in some big-name films. Bottom line with this one: buyer beware.
A viewer got it right!.......2005-04-03
A Viewer got it right except he gave it one to many stars.
Disjointed and boring. Skip this one!

--Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
WHOA!.......2007-06-25
The sight of Bruce Willis slipping on golf balls brings a tear to my eye every time. I love Blake Edwards, always have, always will. He has made some bombs (any Pink Panther movie after Peter Sellers died, for example), yet Blind Date, as far as it is from being as funny as Sellers' Pink Panther movies, The Party (also with Sellers), Breakfast at Tiffany's, and so on, is an entertaining movie and has many clever moments.
The plot, anyway, concerns workaholic Walter (Bruce Willis, pre-DIE HARD and very funny), who is bucking for a promotion and soon finds he needs a date for a dinner with his boss and a Japanese client they are representing. His brother-in-law (the always reliable late Phil Hartman)recommends Nadia (Kim Basinger), who is a sweet girl, until you get her drunk. Pish posh, says Walter, and down the hatch goes the champagne. Soon she is wrecking the dinner party, getting Walter fired, getting his car destroyed, and ultimately getting him arrested, mostly thanks to her psychotic ex-bpyfriend David (John Larroquette, basically reprising his STRIPES character and doing a fine job at it). From there Walter has to crash David and Nadia's wedding (long story), but not before some sneaking around David's parents' mansion (which Edwards can direct like no one else).
So slapstick? Check. Romance? Check. Bad '80s music? ...Sigh, check. Yeah, you'd think combining the two things he does best (pratfalls and romance) would make a masterpiece, but his fine eye for what's funny and Dale Launer's (also behind My Cousin Vinny, Ruthless People, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, three admittedly better movies) witty script make a funny movie to watch on a boring night. Just watch out for that music. Poor Henry Mancini can't even write good '80s music.
Moronic.......2006-07-21
The so-called humor in this embarrassingly awful and unfunny movie is so uncreative and moronic. It is apparently for a demographic of viewers with an extremely childish sense of humor. A three year old will laugh at anything. Every turn of the plot is stupid. This is in the running for the worst movie ever made. I don't trust the taste of anyone who actually was impressed by this horse manure. I hope that Bruce Willis would have the class to turn down a role like this if he was offered it now. I think he is a very good actor. It's a shame what kind of garbage he had to be in, to get his career going.
Ever feel that you are in a Dave Barry skit?.......2006-05-29
If you are familiar with Dave Barry "DAVE BARRY'S COMPLETE GUIDE TO GUYS", you will recognize his formula of starting out with some innocuous statement about a neutral subject and it builds up slowly and logically to make you thing that something totally ridicules is plausible.
Walter Davis (Bruce Willis) is required to bring a date to a company function. A relative (Phil Hartman) know for finding weird blind dates seems to have located the perfect date Nadia Gates (Kim Basinger;) the only caveat is that she is unstable when liberated. Walter was warned.
Naturally the warning must be an exaggeration as we all get a little tipsy. Nope it was right on the money. Nadia who also gives warning goes from polite to helpful to very helpful. To top this off she is being doggedly followed by a psychotic cop ex-boyfriend (John Larroquette.) This is just for starters.
"Do you recognize me? I used to be a respectable citizen. I had a good job and a promising future. I made only one mistake - I went on a blind date. ...Anyone got $10,000 for bail?"
A COMEDY WORTH SEEING!!!.......2006-04-20
It has been awhile since I have seen this movie. The first time was in the theatre when it came out with my family. Since then I had seen it at Blockbuster and picked it up for the heck of it. I forgot how funny this movie was. And the most overlooked performance has to be by the late Phil Hartman (Ted Davis). What a comic he was! He had joined SNL in 1986 so I'm guessing this was one of his first movies after joining the show. Bruce Willis (Walter Davis) & Kim Basinger (Nadia Gates) do an equally good job of acting like a couple who are smitten with each other (when they aren't drunk, that is.) Adding to the laughs is Stephanie Faracy (The Great Outdoors) as Susie Davis, Walter's sister-in-law, John Larroquette (of Night Court) as Nadia's ex-crazed boyfriend David Bedford, and William Daniels (Boy Meets World) as Judge Harold Bedford, David's father. This is a great movie for a Friday night. It was just as much fun pointing out the cameos from Billy Vera & Stanley Jordan. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did!
Funny Bruce.......2005-09-20
This is a great Bruce Willis comedy from the 80s. Far from the big action movies that Bruce is so well known for, movie will entertain everyone with its comedy and hijinks. My only complaint about this movie is there are a few, just a few, parts in this movie that seem a little slow, otherwise prepare to laugh out loud.

A pic about a man who can not get a date and is then cursed witha beautiful, neurotic woman he can't get rid of.
Customer Reviews:
A fun romp.......2007-05-13
I came across this movie by chance last night, and I really enjoyed it. Sassy, classy Woo (who seems to miraculously know all the right people in all the right and wrong places) is bent on jerking around her blind date, uptight lawyer-wannabe Tim. Bitter over being treated like an object, she's out to teach the man (any man, in fact) a lesson. And while she does put Tim and his friends through their paces during this first date from hell, Tim also inspires Woo to take the chip off of her shoulder for at least a little while to give love a chance.
Woo and Tim's adventures are interspersed with scenes from the goofy love life of Woo's cousin and Tim's best friend, the couple who set up the blind date in the first place. They are desperate to get Woo out of the way so they can indulge in a night of no-holds-barred passion. While some of these scenes are wicked funny, that particular sub-plot disappears towards the end of the movie without any particular resolution. This was a bit of a disappointment, but I guess the director/editors decided they couldn't top the "chicken ho" bit and opted to leave well enough alone. After that, the focus of the movie sticks to setting up Woo and Tim's "happily ever after." (Was even hoping for something in the credits that would wrap up that storyline, but no such luck.)
All in all, this movie was an entertaining romp, and not a bad way to spend part of an evening.
Hilarious! Hysterical!.......2006-06-21
After eight years of ignoring this movie - primarily due to the negative reviews it got - I finally got to see it the other night on TV. I laughed non-stop. It's a typical story of a blind date that seems doomed for failure but ends in romance. As saccharine as the end of the movie may be and as cynical and jaded I may well be, I'm not ashamed to say I had tears in my eyes as the end credits rolled. I thought it was great. Not all movies are made to answer some of life's most puzzling questions. Not all movies are supposed to be 'intelligent' or 'thought-provoking'. Not all movies are made to change the world. Some movies are made for us to be able to sit back for one and a half hours, forget all our troubles and just have a good scream. This is one of those movies and I'm getting the DVD. I can't wait to watch it again.
All my favourite comedy actors are here: Jada of course (looking as lovely as I've ever seen her), Dave Chapelle, Duane Martin, Paula Jai Parker, Aida Turturro, LL Cool J and Dartanyan Edmonds. Even Foxy Brown makes an appearance and it's not too bad either.
But most of all, there's Tommy Davidson. Ah, Tommy Davidson. Not everyone's cup of tea, apparently, but he always does it for me.
If this movie taught me one lesson it's to let reviews INFORM my decisions on what movies to see and buy, and not to let them influence them. This is definitely one for the collection!
This film is good........2004-09-20
I believe that this is a very funny film. Chappelle(sp?), Davidson, Pinkett-Smith. This is a very peaceful film because all the shots are done at night.
I can't remember much except for the chicken scene and the restaurant. It's almost as if I was sleeping, but watching the movie.
Films at night seem to bring peace to me for some reason. This one and Men At Work(Charlie Sheen and Emelio Esteves).
Well, to close, I wanted to say both of these movies are great, they seem to hit the right nerve for comedy.
-Calvin
A waste of film.......2004-02-26
I'm sorry, but this movie was NOT good at all. There were some moments where I chuckled, but this movie really was WOOOOOOO TERRIBLE. Wait for it to come on TV.
Woo-Wee.......2003-11-24
I absolutely love this movie!!! My husband and I can watch this movie everyday and still continue to laugh as if it was our first time watching it. We can't wait for it to come out on DVD in January.
For anyone looking to laugh this is a must see.

Customer Reviews:
Not the best acting, BUT..........2007-02-12
...the scenes with Kate Capshaw and Elle Macpherson are SIZZLING!! Stockard Channing is always wonderful, and has obviously waited it out to "come of age" and into the roles of her career. Cameryn Manheim and and a few of the other actresses were really fun to see outside of the familiar roles we are used to. I'd recommend "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her" if you like this "vignette" format...it's a little better.
VERY TALENTED GROUP OF WOMEN.......2005-12-03
SOME OF THE CHARACTERS WERE JUST NOT ALIVE BUT KATE KAPSHAW WAS CONVINCING AS THE BI-SEXUAL LOVER OF ELLE MACPHEARSON.IT WAS GOOD TO SEE KATE AGAIN I THINK SHE'S UNDERRATED IT'S JUST TOUGH WHEN YOU'RE MRS.STEVEN SPIELBERG TO BE ANYTHING BUT MRS.SPIELBERG.I HAVE TO AGREE THAT THE LOVE SCENE PROBABLY WAS WRITTEN BY STRAIGHT MEN AND NOT LESBIAN WOMEN JONIE MITCHELL'S SONG WAS GREAT FOR THE LOVE SCENE, BUT I MUST ADMIT IT WAS THE SONG PLAYING IN THE CLUB THEY DANCED TO THAT MADE THIS MOVIE WORTH SEEING IT WAS A VERY GOOD SONG ONE OF CHAKA KHANS BEST SONGS, I PURCHASED THAT CD THE SONG IS CALLED STRONGER THAN BEFORE IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED.I KNOW ELLE TOOK IT ON THE CHIN ALOT FOR HER ACTING SHE WAS CLUMSY AT TIMES WITH HER LINES AND I LITTLE TO LETHARGIC BUT SHE'LL PROBALY IMPROVE WITH WORK, AND BOO-HOO WHEN U LOOK LIKE THAT WHO REALLY CARES ANYWAY, I THINK SHE WILL IMPROVE OVER TIME MOST MODELS HAVE.SHE JUST SEEMED LIKE SHE WASN'T PLAYING A CHARACTER,EVEN THOUGH HER ISSUES AND HER FEELINGS WERE REALISTIC FOR HER SITUATION. IT SEEMED LIKE SHE WAS ELLE MACPHEARSON NOT BEING COMFORTABLE WITH KATE CAPSHAW.THE THREE SISTERS WAS OK THE THING ABOUT IT IS IF YOU'RE NOT A DISFUNCTIONAL FAMILY OR KNOW OF ANY THEN IT REALLY SEEMS OVER THE TOP, THE THIRD STORY I THINK WAS THE WEAKEST STORY, I MEAN MIA FARROW LOVE HER, LINDA HAMILTON VERY CAPABLE AND LYNN WHITFIELD OFTEN UNDERRATED GAVE THEIR ALL,BUT IT REALLY DIDN'T HAVE A STRONG EFFECT WITH THE AUDIENCE, AND THE LAST STORY WITH CAMRYN MANHEIM DID DRAG A BIT AND I EXPECTED A BETTER BANG FOR THE ENDING,BUT STOCKARD CHANNING AS ALWAYS IMPRESSED ME EVEN THOUGH U KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HER.IT WAS HARD CONNECTING WITH THE CHARACTERS THEY WERE A LITTLE UNDER WRITTEN WITH STRONGER WRITING YOU ROOT FOR THEM AND YOU CARE ABOUT THEM, WOMENS RELATIONSHIPS CAN BE VERY COMPLEX AND WOMEN HAVE GOOD STORIES TO TELL HOPEFULLY WE'LL SEE MORE MOVIES LIKE THIS IN THE FUTURE BECAUSE STORIES ABOUT WOMEN ARE NOT VALUED OR PRODUCED AND THEY SHOULD BE.KUDOS FOR THE EFFORT.
A Girl Thing review.......2005-08-09
I like A GirlThing. It has four mini storys about love and life and family. Don't worry each story is about 50 minutes, so you get real complete storys. I always feel a movie is good as long as it has a good story line and gives it enough time to tell the story. It's worth wathing.
A Girl thing.......2005-07-07
If you love well written stories, great plots and captivating acting then this movie IS NOT for you.
I don't know how the producer managed to swindle precious investor dollars to get this tripe made into a movie, however there it is!
It was SO BORING and so badly done that after the first 1 hour and 45 minutes I had to turn it off. I don't even want to know how it ended.
The cast line up was great! That's the only 'positive' comment I can make with regards to this movie.
DO NOT watch it. DO NOT hire it. DO NOT believe anybody who thinks it is good.
The two lesbians who made love even did that scene poorly; get this, it was done in the missionary position!
Avoid this movie!
A Girl Thing gone terribly wrong.......2004-09-16
When a friend and I read the back of the DVD at Blockbuster, we were intrigued by the plot, not to mention the incredible cast. We checked it out with anticipation of a great flick. I wouldnt even consider what we were feeling as dissapointment; I would describe what we felt as pure regret! The acting on the part of Elle McPherson was awful! The character development in this movie was null and void. I dont understand how other reviewers can say that this was a fabulous movie depicting real life situations about women...I dont know about you but I dont have internal conflict with everyday lesbian experiences, my mother never tricked me in to thinking I was adopted so that I'd get along with my siblings. I dont know what happened in the other two 'chapters' because we turned this atrocity of a movie off after 2 hours of pure hell. If you want to make a movie about womens issues, make a movie about our rights, our health issues, being a mother, etc. This was just a poorly written script with a good cast who couldnt even save it from the depths of the hideousness that is called A Girl Thing!

The wild success of The Tale of Zatoichi demanded a sequel and star Shintaro Katsu was only too happy to reprise his role as the traveling masseur and blind swordsman. Star Katsu and director Kazuo Mori flesh out the enigmatic Ichi in this outing, creating a more haunted and less conniving character who prefers to keep his identity shrouded and his sword sheathed. Nonetheless the peace-loving swordsman is reluctantly and repeatedly forced to fight when he's attacked by a government goon squad, a gang of hoodlums, and an angry one-armed swordsman whose interest in Ichi is purely personal. This action-packed entry, which ultimately brings our hero back to the site of his previous film for the furious climax, practically revels in the concentrated bursts of Ichi's lightning attack.
The newly restored DVD features a small stills gallery, a fold-out insert with an essay by Tatsu Aoki (a self described "Ichi Freak"), and four collector cards. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Non-stop action, a deadly love triangle, and a mysterious one-armed samurai round out the second installment in the legendary Zatoichi series. When Zatoichi discovers the lord who has hired him suffers from a madness that -- if made public -- would bring ruin to his empire and the livelihood of the samurai warriors he employs, the blind masseur becomes a wanted man for the secret he now possesses. Attacked at every turn by the crazed lord's samurais and hired yakuza thugs, Zatoichi manages to escape relatively unscathed. But in a final duel, masseur Ichi must face his old foe, the infamous one-armed samurai (played by Tomisaburo Wakayama, the brother of star Shintaro Katsu).

Zatoichi Vol. 2: The Tale of Zatoichi Continues.......2007-03-14
Not as good as the 1st but still decent. Story wasn't setup as well, and the "plot twist" was seen coming from a mile away. Short movie as well. Was kinda dissapointed what with my 3+ hour marathon movies of late. Shintaro Katsu is extremely likeable as the title character and better than Takeshi Kitano in this role.
#2: A GOOD FOLLOW UP FROM THE FIRST FILM.......2006-09-05
This is the last black-and-white episode of the Zatoichi films. And like the first episode, we find the protagonist Zatoichi [Shintaro Katsu] returning to the scene of the first episode. Ichi has come to pay his respects to the Ronin, Hirate, whom Ichi did not wish to kill. Ichi's brother, Yoshiro, [Tomisaburo Wakayama] in both the film, and in true life, is in the episode. And as usual he is larger than life. The film starts off with the usual Ichi trademark of humor, which will become more pronounced as the episodes continue.
Yoshiro, the one-armed samurai is his brother: and his brother has a grudge with Ichi. At the same time, Yoshiro and his sidekick must elude the law, which have a bounty on his head.
Throughout the film Zatoichi gives off the nuances of humor which he will make a trademark of in regards to the character. As the episode begins, Ichi is asked to give a massage to the Lord to Edo, however, he discovers that the lord is a lunatic. The court retainers wish to keep this a secret, therefore, they attempt to kill Ichi because he has heard the antics of the Lord while giving him a massage. They don't yet realize who they are up against.
Zatoichi's reputation has not been cemented yet in this early installment, moreover, the action scenes in the second episode are limited in the beginning. Not so with the ending however, and as the film nears the end Zatoichi has begun to cement his reputation as a swordsman to be reckoned with. The cinematography is very good, and they will only get better as the Zatoichi saga continues. I do not wish to spoil the ending for you, but if you hang in there with the plot, you will see the beginnig stages of this magnificent swordsman. Highly recommended.
Katsu's real life brother(Lone Wolf and Cub) plays his foe .......2006-07-30
So obviously the acting could not get any better. But the story is the thing to watch. If you have not seen the first episode let me catch you up. Zatoichi came into town and was unsuccessfully hired to help take out a rival gang in town. One side had already hired a master samurai. When that samurai became sick the other gang thought they weren't going to fight. But he shook off his sickness for a final heroic stand and helped the gang he was hired from beat out the other one even though they were outnumbered by double the swordsman. But then the samurai decided that he must face Zatoichi before he dies. "Better than dying at teh hands of goons". I am horrible at quotes but it was something like that. And then the table were turned and the gang that had more men ended up winning. Also from thsi Zatoichi became known as like a one man army.
Well in this one he is back in town one year later to visit the grave and pay his respects to this samurai. The story starts out almost a bit dumb but you forgtet it and it turns good minutes in when Ichi starts some sh** talking and though justified, he may have gone too far. Well these people are not happy and decide to try and kill him. What follows is a VERY good story about another samurai who we find all about. Ichi ends up meeting this "samurai" and we find out the connection between the 2. The whole movie I was deciding whether or not this should be a 4 or a 5, but then the end happened. You don't f*** with Zaoichi or anybody who is close too him.
The DVD is amazing picture quality, even though it is in black and white. Also perfectly letterboxed and some of the best subtitles you will ever see traslated for asian cinema.
Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman, Vol 2.......2006-02-26
In the early seventies, I was enamored of the Zatoichi and Sword of Vengence movies produced in Japan, and viewed at the Toho Brea Theatres in Los Angeles. When the Toho closed down, these movies were lost to me and others. Now, they are back, on DVD, with Japanese wording and good subtitles! Thank you for making these great works of Movie History available again! Everything about them is excellent!! 10 stars would be better!!
Zatoichi's Best........2004-10-20
I've seen basically all of the 'Zatoichi' films and this is far and away the best. Although it's relatively short (75 minutes or so), it's got well-coreographed fight scenes, great acting (when he's not killing three people at a time, you'd think Shintaro Katsu was really blind), and all sorts of wonderful plot twists. In this film, Zatoichi develops more as a character rather than as a gimmick. Although the first film was superb, we really only got to see that he was this avenging angel from the yakuza, if such a thing is not a contradiction in terms. This time around, however, we get to see more of what motivates Ichi as well as some more insight into his past. We are introduced in this chapter to Ichi's law-breaking brother, played by Tomisaburo Wakayama (who was Shintaro Katsu's brother in real life as well). We learn that the two had previously feuded over the same woman to the point that Ichi cut off his brother's arm in a fit of rage. While all this is going on, Ichi is being pursued by Kanbei, an assassin sent to dispatch Ichi before he can tell of Kanbei's lord's insanity. In his pursuit of Ichi, Kanbei hooks up with Sukegoro, Ichi's employer from the previous installment who has a score to settle with the blind swordsman. These various groups all come into conflict with one another at various points and make for a film that is simultaneously action-packed and well thought out. Highest recommendations.

Review of Blind Date - The Ultimate Uncensored 3 Pack.......2007-01-23
It was an entertaining as advertised.
There's one good dvd here..........2006-05-25
The one with the naked chicks!!! The other two are lame.
This Video ROCKS!!! .......2006-03-21
Ordinarily, this isn't the kind of thing I like, but the Blind Date Jamaica Too Hot DVD was GREAT!! It was filmed at some sex resort called Hedonism. Not only were their lots of hot chicks with REAL breasts... but there was naked cliff diving, naked sailing and even naked nudity! (Funny, huh? Maybe I should write for Blind Date!)
But what really made the DVD was that it was hilarious. There was this kid who talked himself up as a big player but was really a virgin. Another guy had two dates at the same time and had to rocket himself back and forth between the two girls. Another guy was out with an AMAZINGLY HOT CHICK and couldn't stop singing and playing guitar, even when she was NAKED! What a loser! (She finally went off with another amazingly hot chick and they made out in a hot tub. Wow!)
I'd only give this a 3 on the Spank-Meter, but if you like naked women, sexy fun and big laughs, this tape is a keeper.
I like the show.......2005-10-11
this is a show on Spike TV were a man and woman come on a reality show for a date they don't know each other that's why it's called blind date. during the show the camera do these special effects like putting words on the screen they love poking fun at the guys which is not fair. Customer Reviews:
#6: A CASE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY.......2006-09-04
This 6th entry of Zatoichi finds the anti-hero Ichi paying his repects at the grave of a samurai he killed by mistake three years prior. It was self-defense, nonetheless, he feels remorse. A young girl hiding behind the trees overhears this self-confession: She was the samurai's sister. Jump ahead in the film, and we come to the villagers who have saved up 1000 Ryo in tax money. After 3 years of bad harvest they have finally been able to scrape enough together to satisfy the intendant. Or have they?
Enter a sadistic bullwhip weilding Ronin named Jushiro [Tomisaburo Wakayama] the main antagonist in the film. (The real life brother of Shintaro Katsu--who also appeared in Zatoichi episode #2.) And he's pretty darn sadistic as Jushiro; and with a pretty unhealthy hatred of Zatoichi. However, he sure plays the sadistic role to the hilt. He does not care about the 1000 ryo, even when offered to him. He wants Zatoichi. Jushiro's hatred for Ichi is because he looks down on him as a low-life masquerading as a swordsman. How many other arrogant villians have we seen like this already? Ah, when will they ever learn?
Ichi is blamed for taking the missing 1000 ryo's, and he resolves to clear his name. The intendant, with the help of Jushiro are already at work however scheming to take the money, tax the people again, and do away with Zatoichi. This always sounds easy over those drinks of saki. But Ichi has a surprise for them. There is a really funny part in the film, where Zatoichi and Jushiro wager on a bet. [I'll let you watch that--it's hilarious, even by Ichi standards] I'll write no more, watch the film, you will enjoy it. The music is good, the cinematography is great, the plot is excellent and the acting is terrific. Highly recommend.
I finally decided get into the zatoichi series.......2006-07-15
I actually decided to watch lone wolf and cub first but am going to have to sneak a few more of these in.
I guess I thought it was Chang Cheh who introduced us to these types of movies but I can see now that some of my favorite movies ever like one armed swordsman are just good ripoffs of Zatoichi. This guy is wher it started. Well, the wong fei-hong movies come first in terms of martial arts, but Zatoichi has to be the first person on screen you could really look up to because of the heroic deeds that he does. Not just doing the good deeds, but the way he slices through everybody is beautiful. Being a kung fu fan I need a good final fight but wasn't really expecting one with how old this is but was pleasently surprised.
I can't believe I thought it was the chinese that started all this, but I was way wrong. When Shintarô Katsu hit the screen, he may not have been the first but was far and away the best for it's time. THE JAPANESE EVEN SEEM TO HAVE INVENTED TEH OPENING STAGED FIGHTING SEQUENCES!!!
The movie is anamorphically widescreened and when they say the picture is remastered Home Vision Entertainment is not lying one bit.
So I have to say that my first Zatoichi experience was breathtaking, funny, touching, and very exciting.
One of the best of the series.......2005-01-22
Actually I think this is far better than the previous Zatoichi outings. Visually it's a stunning film that ranks among the great action films of all time but could be hung as stills in any art museum. Hokusai & Hiroshige influences abound.
Yet best of all is the unforgettable character Zatoichi himself. Shintaro Katsu created an everyman/superhero who had no equal, at least in western culture. A squat, homely, bandy-legged self-deprecating blind man full of humor & humility & an abundance of spirituality. And could he make that sword dance.
These movies have no equal. Each one is as perfectly made as any movie can be. I used to go see them when they first appeared in the theaters of San Francisco & Los Angeles Japanese neighborhoods. I still love them every bit as much now.
Can't miss with a hard drinking highly skilled swordsman.......2003-03-04
As always, this movie gives you all you want in the zatoichi vein, the emmotional women, the amazing swordsmanship, and the numerous opportunities for Zatoichi to display the character that lasted him thru so many movies. Mixed up in the search for a lost chest of gold, thieves, and crooked goverment officials, Zatoichi saves the day in his unsual manner. Not quite as good as the first ones but still worth the price
