With the help of his lawyer, Georges (Gérard Depardieu), a composer and one-time petty thief who grew up in poverty, attempts to escape his life in Paris and begin anew in America by illegally marrying Bronte (Andie MacDowell), a prim and repressed young lady from a privileged life in Connecticut. Bronte, who has agreed to the scheme for her own self-serving reasons, is exasperated when the Immigration & Naturalization Service investigates their case, and she and Georges, whom she detests, must spend time together studying each other's lives to avoid disaster. The fallout, and how it ends, is infinitely more delightful than your run-of-the-mill Hollywood romantic comedy, and the very ending itself stops deliciously short of where Hollywood would feel compelled to drag the story. Fine performances are given by MacDowell, Depardieu--who is fiercely charming pounding the keyboard of a Steinway at an upper class Manhattan dinner party--and Bebe Neuwirth, who is perfect as an upper-class child turned artist who revels in her irresponsibility. --James McGrath

Great Movie.......2007-05-30
Enjoyable movie that has stood the test of time. Very funny and imaginative.
Green Card.......2007-01-04
Excellent movie. Andie MacDowell and Gerard Depardieu at their finest. Supporting actors Bebe Neuwirth and Gregg Eldeman are wonderful too. Superb job of directing. You will want to re-watch it frequently.
An unlikely tale of love..........2006-11-25
Green Card was a good movie. The main characters are well defined and relatable because they are not fake or scripted. The story makes you realize that what you think you want isnt always what you need. A perfect example of how love shows up when you least expect it and when you are not looking for it. Funny and heart warming!
I watched it for him, and he is why I would watch it again........2006-10-02
Gerard Depardieu is amazing, its pretty hard to argue that point. So inspite of my usual tepid response to McDowell, I picked this up at the video store. The opening scene for me didn't really tie into the action of the film--a kid baning on a drum as if he is on his last breath (I suppose in a grander sense it does) But it left me with a very disjointed feeling from the begining, we start off with the marriage of the two main characters, knowing nothing about them, essentially. (This works for and against the movie).
They are each marrying because marriage will give them something they want, he a Green Card, she a Green House. (Why she needs a green house so desperately, or can't get one else where is sort of unexplained, how convenient--or why she didn't marry her safe boyfriend...)
A snag in the Green Card proceedings occur when he has difficulting showing one of the investigators where the restroom of her apartment is. So they spend the next several days getting to know each other. this works for the movie, because the audience is also getting to know them, so the information is not redundant. However, the audience has also spent the last 45 minutes without much of a connection to either character, because we knew so little about them until now. She explains her well to do upbringing in a loving family, whlie he reminices about his life on the wrong side of the street.
The ending was almost bittersweet in that it leaves the audience wanting the neat Hollywood ending (which is not given, cruel! Almost makes me want to watch it again to see all of that build up again)
Bronte is a sort of dumb character who has a very blinded view of the world and of the people in it. She has considerable growth in the movie, in regards to Georges at least. He seems a little more static, as he always treated her pretty well, its only his regard for her that changed.
Some of the supporting characters were pretty amusing, Ethan Phillips, Bebe Neuwerth was probably the gem of the lot. I wouldn't have minded seeing her in the title role.
Not a bad way to spend some time, but I'm not sure of the strengths out weight the weaknesses enough for me to repeatedly watch it--even with Depardieu's amazingness in it.
With a Frenchman in New York.......2006-08-09
This movie never fails to humor me. I lost my original video so I finally decided to get this dvd.
These two strangers (Andie MacDowell and Gerard Depardieu) couldn't be more oppposites. I love the scenery of the park and the apartment with the lovely plants. It isn't until the end that they learn what the two could offer each other. It still frustrates me that they couldn't stay with each other in the end when they did realize that they loved each other.

Enjoyable but mild love-hate comedy!.......2007-02-18
This is an entertaining but mild love-hate comedy starring the lovely & talented Laura Harring in a lead role. She plays a hot-tempered & strong-willed Latina woman who marries for a green card. She's not at all the monster that she's made out to be by her brother - singer "Gerardo". It's probably the director's fault for not having her play the role to the hilt. This is the only flaw of the film. That would have been fun to watch, and allowed Ms. Harring to stretch her acting skills. However, her character here comes across as generally sweet and sort of like mild salsa. There's no vindictiveness - think of how good "War of the Roses" was with Michael Douglas & Kathleen Turner. Yet, it's nice to see Laura in all her gorgeous beauty for 90 minutes here rather in brief supporting roles where she only gets a few seconds of camera time. The chemistry between the leads is pretty good. The singer formerly known as "Gerardo" is excellent as the bossy brother-in-law. I especially liked the scene where he goes in for an image make-over and the hairstylist wants to shave off his moustache. Overall, it's a satisfying comedy but could have been better if the script called for more of a battle between the sexes. If you want to watch a hysterical and truly vindictive love-hate relationship, pick up "Love Stinks" starring Frenchie Stewart and Brigitte Wilson.
Spainsh Class.......2004-11-29
I love this movie! I watch this in spainsh class, so I only suggest if you can speak a little spanish then you will love it! It starts off slow but it gets better so be patient. Sorry for the spelling. I can't type with the nails on.
The Best scenes are with Barbara Eden.......2004-04-28
The best scenes of the DVD movie are with Barbara Eden who's always Great in the roles she plays.
Fools Rush Into Greek Wedding...NOT!!!.......2004-01-02
If you loved the Movie My Greek Wedding...Or Where Fools Rush in then you will be bitterly disapointed with this movie!!! Does this mean Loco Love was a terrible movie...not hardly the potential was there. The plot as the other movies have demonstrated was a potential five the execution was a one...leaving me mathmatically speaking with a three for nice try... The actors did a great job with a very mediorce script and I don't think you will be upset that you rented it...but I am sure you will be glad that you did not take your date to the movies to see this one because it does sort of leave you flat...
Better than expected.......2003-11-23
To be honest I never expected much out of Loco Love when I picked it up on the video store shelf. The only reason I rented it in the first place was because it starred Laura Harring whom I've been a big fan of ever since I saw Mulholland Drive. I put it into the DVD player and was pleasantly surprised to find that I actually enjoyed the film.
While it does have some glaring problems, most blatantly the fact that it was probably very low budget and it seemed as if the movie had been made for television. The fact is the movie entertained me much more so than most of the romantic comedies being pushed onto the big screen by the studios. If I had a choice I would rent this again before watching Maid In Manhattan or the Wedding Planner again. Both big Hollywood hits.
Loco Love's plot is simply enough. A well to do man gets dumped by his cheating wife who digs the knife deeper by taking his restaurant he manages from him in the divorce. meanwhile his Mexican gardener has just won 62 million in the lottery and is desperate to bring his sister(Laura Harring) up from Mexico. He makes a deal with the man that if he marries his sister so she can get a green card he will buy him a new restaurant. The only problem is his sister is rather tempered and the two instantly clash. It's no surprise that the two actually end up falling in love and the ending is predictable but the way the audience is led to the ending is what makes this film so much fun.
For those of you wanting to see something new that you might have missed without 50 million on advertising I would check out this movie.

A Charmer.......2003-01-06
The film concerns an arranged marriage between a Canadian college professor and a Hispanic immigrant man who is in the country illegally and is being pursued by a Robert-Mitchum-type immigrations officer. The professor's sister happens to be the legal counsel for the immigrant, and talks her sister into agreeing to the marriage. In order to pass the required court interview to determine if the marriage is "real" as opposed to a legal contrivance, the couple must learn a great deal about each other in a short time. The more they learn, the more they see each other as human beings--and attractive ones at that.
This film's good qualities are more subtle than obvious, and are often visual rather than verbal, as we watch the play of emotion on the actors' faces. The color film quality is quite grainy and soft-focused, and handheld cameras are used a lot, giving it a quasi documentary quality. One has to get used to it, especially if one expects clear, bright images from a DVD. In French and Spanish, with English subtitles.
Mild romance picture, but I love it.......2000-03-15
"~When "Paper Wedding" was released it was universally described as "like 'Green Card,' only a lot better.""~ most passionate scenes I've seen, when the man and woman are trying to get their story straight before their interview with the feds. I don't mean passionate in a sex-scene sense -- it's all in the mind. Afterwards it's not certain whether these two will fall in love, but if they do it will be this conversation that started it.
Quiet but stunning.......1999-12-26
Two very private people, a university professor and an illegal immigrant from political persecution, are thrown together in an arranged marriage that will give the immigrant Canadian citizenship. Each learns of a new kind of intimacy and caring. A wonderful film.

Engrossing.......2003-09-30
Very intense dramatic scenes. Engrossing. Expected it to be a bit more funny, seeing the title. Its funny, but, more serious to my surprize. Watchable. I recommend it.
I'm waiting for it to be released in India.......2003-09-28
I saw Green Card Fever in Mumbai International Film Festival-2002. This film was the closing ceremony film there. The theater was full with about 400 people.(Ya..it was a huge theater.)
I have witnessed every other minute audience clapping, laughing and loudly expressing that they "agree" with many issues that Green Card Fever brought about. On the surface, the movie looks like dealing with just immigration politics in the USA. But, it has much more depth than that. It talks about moral dilemmas and ethical challenges that everyone faces in their lives, and the inevitable encounter of the 'pettyness' that pops up from behind our 'social masks.' Acting of the lead actors was very subtle and mature. I can say, after Hyderabad Blues, this is going to be the next 'must see' film in that genre. I'm waiting for it to be released in India soon.

At last original, not a Hollywood copycat.......2003-09-26
Whenver we see any Indian movie, I and my friends do meticulous searches on the net to check if it resembles some Hollywood movie. More often than not, we do find some original version of the bollywood copycat. Maniratnam, Ramgopal Varma, Subash Ghai
etc. are gods in Bollywood today, and mind you ALL OF THEM COPY FROM HOLLYWOOD. Very rarely we see some original movies like
Lagaan, Hyderabad Blues from India. Green Cardfever is also very original in its story, treatment and everything. Actors were better than Shah Rukhs and Sunil Shettys of Mumbai.
Best first attempt.......2003-09-26
We were really immersed into the film Green Card Fever, after first 2 minutes of the movie. I have seen American Desi.
I liked the hero and the heroine of that movie very much. They were very charming and talented. In Green Card Fever, both those stars acted, but, in more powerful characters. The new actor who played the hero in Green Card Fever is also very talented. Only thing is, he occassionally does melodrama especially when he cries. Other than that, he was good. Story and directing were good first time attempts by the crew.
Worth Repeated Viewing.......2003-09-25
First I watched Green Card Fever in a theater. It has opened my eyes into the world of illegal immigrants. It was amazing to see how the immigrants see each other. I've never been one, except visited Indonesia on an excursion for a week. Anyhow, maybe, that one week of 'immigrant' experience helped me to understand Green Card Fever better. I want to watch it again, and I just bought a DVD from a stores. It's worth repeated viewing since there are some layers underneath the surface story. I too want to follow the accents better, maybe, the repeated viewing will be helpful, though the accents never stopped me from enjoying Green Card Fever.
Bill.
