Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
Julie Christie's miracle year of 1965 (she was also in Doctor Zhivago) was capped by a best-actress Oscar® for this sardonic take on Swinging London. Looking about as gorgeous as women get, Christie ascends the ladder of social success, trampling everybody in her path--an ascent that allows writer Frederic Raphael and director John Schlesinger to slash away at the morally bankrupt world that would enable such a person to triumph. Cynics might suggest that Schlesinger's approach, rife with the experiments of New Wave filmmaking, is nearly as empty and showy as the world it describes... which may be why this movie seems more dated than, say, Richard Lester's films from the '60s. Still, with Christie getting generous and suave support from two of the top British stars of the day, Dirk Bogarde and Laurence Harvey, Darling remains a watchable missive from a volatile era. --Robert Horton

There's an extra coat of hot wax on Pixar's vibrant, NASCAR-influenced comedy about a world populated entirely by cars. Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) is the slick rookie taking the Piston Cup series by storm when the last race of the season (the film's high-octane opening) ends in a three-way tie. On the way to the tie-breaker race in California, Lightning loses his way off Route 66 in the Southwest desert and is taught to stop and smell the roses by the forgotten citizens of Radiator Springs. It's odd to have such a slim story from the whizzes of Pixar, and the film pales a bit from their other films (though can that be a fair comparison?). Nonetheless, Cars is another gleaming ride with Pixar founder John Lasseter, who's directing for the first time since Toy Story 2. There's the usual spectrum of excellent characters teamed with appropriate voice talent, loads of smooth humor for kids and parents alike, knockout visuals, and a colorful array of sidekicks, including a scene-stealing baby blue forklift named Guido. Lightning's plight is changed with the help of former big-city lawyer Sally Carrera (Pixar veteran Bonnie Hunt), the town's patriarch Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), and kooky tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy). The Incredibles was the first Pixar film to break the 100-minute barrier, but had enough story not to suffer; Cars, at 116 minutes (including some must-see end credit footage), is not as fortunate, plus it never pierces the heart. Trivia fans should have bonanza with the frame-by-frame DVD function; the movie is stuffed with in-jokes, some appearing only for an instant. Ages 5 and up. --Doug Thomas

great movie!.......2007-07-02
disney / pixar makes great movies and this is one of them! great family movie with a great storyline. loved it
An Instant Classic!.......2007-06-30
I would rate this along the lines of "Toy Story" as far as a child's ability to relate and enjoy the film, and for staying power.
My 3 year old son is addicted to this movie. The "speed" and "lightening" and even the classic music used in the film (Route 66 and the first song I heard right after getting my driver's license at 16 - Life is a Highway) make the perfect blend for a life-long HIT!
The actual story is original - tying racing with the story of Route 66. The characters are likable and entertaining for ALL ages!
Whether you are 3 or 103, I think you will enjoy the originality, comedy, music, action and even a little bit of romance! Two thumbs up and a must- have for all animation film collectors!
In need of some repair .......2007-06-28
Pixar usually makes children's films that also appeal to adults on many levels, including jokes that fly well above the heads of youngsters. My son, who is three, loves to watch the first ten minutes of "Cars." Then he gets extremely bored and stops watching. Good films, such as "Finding Nemo," "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" and "Toy Story," will hold his attention for the duration. (He knows "Finding Nemo" from start to finish and has watched it, at minimum, fifty times.) I also enjoy good children's movies (I know most of the lines from "Finding Nemo"), yet I find this film tedious. At a runtime of nearly two hours, I cannot sit through the entire movie in one sitting and even then have a difficult time watching all of it. It starts out well enough and the ending, with its positive messages of friendship, loyalty and good sportsmanship, is quite good. Much of the material in between, however, is fairly weak. Scenes drag on far too long and are just plain dull. The messages could have been conveyed in fewer and more truncated scenes and still have been as effective. The basis for a very good film here is certainly evident. As usual, Pixar's animation is excellent and the tone is just right for kids: simple without being condescending and with very sparse scatological humor (which is an astonishing feat, given Larry the Cable Guy's involvement). The voice acting is well cast and features uniformly fine performances. With more judicious writing and editing, "Cars" could have been another Pixar classic. (2.5/5 stars)

I watched this with two aging race drivers: one a local dirt track champion and the other a former NASCAR Winston Cup driver. We all loved this movie. Besides being a high quality animated presentation, my companions pointed out the accuracy and realism regarding the racing episodes and techniques that was evident to them. Disney's 1992 animated feature is a triumph of wit and skill. The high-tech artwork and graphics look great, the characters are strong, the familiar story is nicely augmented with an interesting villain (Jafar, voiced by Jonathan Freeman), and there's an incredible hook atop the whole thing: Robin Williams's frantically hilarious vocal performance as Aladdin's genie. Even if one isn't particularly moved by the love story between the title character (Scott Weinger) and his girlfriend Jasmine (Linda Larkin), you can easily get lost in Williams's improvisational energy and the equally entertaining performances of Freeman and Gilbert Gottfried (as Jafar's parrot). --Tom Keogh

Aladdin.......2007-05-06
I feel lucky to count myself among those who grew up watching modern masterpieces such as "Aladdin", "The Little Mermaid", "Beauty and the Beast" and the like. Nowadays they just don't make 'em like that anymore. Sad but true. (I'm not keen on the Pixar flicks, sorry). I vividly remember going to see each and one of them (starting with "Mermaid" in the spring of 1990) on the big screen. Those were scarce moments of true childhood innocence. Times that you take with you forever, and Disney has done just that to almost every kid in the world during the last 70 years. "Aladdin" came out at the peak of Disney's third golden age that started in 1989. The company released a number of films which broke new ground in animation and were huge artistic and commercial successes as well. Although it broke a few records when it came out on video in 1993, for some odd reason, this DVD release sold a meager amount of copies, catching everyone at the studio by surprise. Nevertheless, "Aladdin" remains as enjoyable as ever and much better than most of its successors.
Perfect Disney DVD for just about anyone..........2007-05-01
I got this as a gift for my niece and she adores the DVD every time she puts it on. Story is told well with great songs/music to sing along to. Production work is A+. Makes a very nice gift for kids or the kid in the adult.
A Fun Children's Story Inspired by One Thousand and One Nights.......2007-04-28
The story of Aladdin, from a collection of stories dating back more than a millennium, has been filmed dozens of times in dozens of variations. However, none was ever filmed as creatively, humorously and family friendly as Disney Studios did in 1992. The success of the movie owes much to the talents of Robin Williams, whose manic impersonations and characterizations propel this movie along at a frantic pace. Disney also kept the story of Aladdin and Princess Jasmine simple, helping the appeal of the movie.
This story is relatively simple, cutting out much of the detail from the original story. Aladdin (voiced by Scott Weinger), is a teenager trying to find enough to eat in Baghdad. Though Aladdin steals food and is a bit of a rogue, he also has a sense of fairness, honor and innocence, a "diamond in the rough" that evil Grand Vizier Jafar (voiced by Jonathan Freeman) needs to enter the Cave of Wonders to steal the magic lamp.
Aladdin enters the cave and finds the lamp, but uses the lamp to escape and become Prince Ali in an attempt to win the heart and hand of Princess Jasmine (voiced by Linda Larkin). As we learn early in the movie, Princess Jasmine wants nothing to do with phonies and princes; she is looking for someone to whom she can give her heart, someone who will understand and love her. Prince Ali is not that person.
Jafar wants the power of being the Sultan of Baghdad. His plan is simple, get the lamp, gain absolute power, marry Jasmine, and take over the world; not necessarily in that order. I would be remiss if I failed to mention Jafar's trusty adviser Iago the Parrot, voiced by the always obnoxious and, certainly in the case of this movie, funny Gilbert Gottfried. Perhaps if Jafar had not had a parrot as an advisor, things might have turned out different for him.
The animation in this edition of the movie is marvelous. The colors are bright and images are quite clear. This movie is excellent to watch on your big screen television.
Another wonderful feature of this movie is the music. The standout song is "A Whole New World," but I also liked "Prince Ali" and "One Jump Ahead." Alan Menken's score and Tim Rice's music garnered an Oscar for Menken and an Oscar for Menken and Rice. In fact, this movie won 22 significant awards and was nominated for another 15.
Aladdin is a good guy trying to survive in a tough world. Princess Jasmine is naïve and innocent. Aladdin's love for Jasmine is pure and teenage and children and teenagers everywhere will identify with Aladdin's angst. The song and dance routines of the Robin Williams' Genie keep the overall tone of this movie light, which is necessary to help balance the evil of Grand Vizier Jafar (voiced by Jonathan Freeman).
I recommend this movie for all members of the family except for the very youngest members, who may be frightened by the images of Jafar and the Genie is a couple of the scenes. Most children ages 4 and above should be able to watch this movie with little difficulty.
Enjoy!

Doris Day, the perky, chaste adult star of an odd collection of winking 1960s sex comedies, takes the Irene Dunne role in this remake of the comedy classic My Favorite Wife. As the survivor of a five-year ordeal on a desert island, she returns home the very day her husband has remarried. James Garner, trading his Maverick impish humor and con man cool for a mugging performance of double takes and pratfalls, is her overjoyed husband who is too cowardly to tell his neurotic bride (Polly Bergen). All of this, naturally, leads to a ridiculously complicated plot that combines door-slamming sex farce with mistaken identities (Day poses as a Swedish masseuse) and a goofy sped-up car chase. Chuck Connors, who costars as Day's hunky, he-man island mate "Adam," leads a topnotch supporting cast that includes sassy Thelma Ritter as Garner's no-nonsense mother, Don Knotts as a nervous shoe salesman enlisted by Day to impersonate Adam, Fred Clark at his indignant best, and John Astin and Pat Harrington in early roles. Edgar Buchanan practically steals the film as a gruff, irascible judge who growls through the legal circus that forms the film's chaotic climax. The cast for the most part rises above the tepid script and bland direction and Day sings two songs. Interestingly, this remake was originally developed for Marilyn Monroe and Dean Martin as the never completed Something's Got to Give. --Sean Axmaker

Delightful Doris Day/James Garner romantic comedy.......2007-06-28
MOVE OVER, DARLING (1963) offers delightful romantic comedy fun for fans of Doris Day and James Garner. This color and CinemaScope remake of the Irene Dunne-Cary Grant MY FAVORITE WIFE (1940) is so close to the B&W original that WIFE's writers get screenplay credit. DARLING is about a man (Garner) marrying his second wife (Polly Bergen) and honeymooning in a fancy Monterey hotel when his first wife (Day) shows up alive after a several year's absence. So we have a screwball comedy treatment of bigamy, with Bergen in suite C wondering why Garner keeps going to Doris in suite A or down to the hotel lobby for an all evening shave..
Whole scenes here are duplicated in WIFE, sometimes with the same dialogue. But I like DARLING more because it adds a wild car chase and a hilarious scene with Doris going in an open convertible through a carwash. And the supporting cast here is spectacular: Thelma Ritter, Fred Clark, Don Knotts, John Astin, Edgar Buchanan as the Judge, Chuck Connors as hunky "Adam", the list goes on. All are wonderful. WIFE cannot begin to match them, despite a good script.
MOVE OVER, DARLING is not a musical. There are no songs. But this was the 1960's, when Doris was making romantic comedies with (ironically) Cary Grant or James Garner, and not musicals. This started out as a vehicle called SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE, with Marilyn Monroe, and was left unfinished with Marilyn's tragic death in 1962. It was revamped a year later into DARLING with Day and Garner and Bergen. Complicating matters is that MY FAVORITE WIFE is itself a remake of the D. W. Griffith silent drama, ENOCH ARDEN (1911), based on the poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson! That version plays complete at 35 minutes as a wonderful bonus with DARLING; it has been supplied from the Library of Congress.
Besides all that exists of ENOCH ARDEN, liberal bonuses with MOVE OVER, DARLING include a behind-the-scenes filmmaking documentary, a Marilyn vs. Doris featurette, and a welcome chat with a still-beautiful Polly Bergen. It's not a masterpiece, but still one of Doris Day's most enjoyable films. Love that carwash scene and Don Knotts playing a shoe salesman sex symbol!
A Great Movie.......2007-06-28
This is a great movie. i love the whole movie but the car wash scene is awesome and one of my favourites.
I Love It........2007-06-13

The Backyardigans-very cute!.......2007-06-22
I got this DVD for my two year old son. He occassionally watches the cartoon on TV but Spongebob is his thing. I was hoping he would get interested in something different. He's watched it through a few times and seems happy with it and it's a welcome relief for me to watch/listen to anything else. I recommend The Backyardigans to anyone with very young children. The color catches their attention. There is also singing and the concepts of the stories are simple to understand. I just wish the DVD was longer. It has only four different episodes on it and runs for only an hour. It's still great for the kids though!
Four great episodes.......2007-06-15
This is one of the few Backyardigans DVDs where all four episodes are outstanding. My daughter loves the different styles of music, and she can't stop smiling and moving whenever we play this DVD. I would highly recommend it.
As always-they are great!!.......2007-05-21
The Backyardigans are fantastic! The use of imagination is something people forget to do and we need to be reminded that life is fun and to just relax a little! The songs are fun, the characters are loveable, and these are videos you can actually watch multiple times without getting sick of them!!
I have been watching them all with my children and my oldest is 4. Even after 4 years I still have all the videos and will always buy more!
Great fun to watch.......2007-04-11
Added to growing collection of these characters for my 16 month old grandchild. She loves them.

Amazon.com essential video
This gentle reworking of Ted Hughes's 1968 novella was the unseen gem of 1999. Hogarth, a young boy who lives in the Maine woods during the cold war, befriends a giant robot. As with E.T., the iron giant is a misunderstood outsider who becomes a child's best friend, and Hogarth does his best to hide the massive figure from his mom (voiced by Jennifer Aniston) and the local scrap-yard beatnik (Harry Connick Jr.). Soon the suspicions of neighbors and a government agent (Christopher McDonald) spell trouble.
With no songs, no sidekicks, and no cheap ending, The Iron Giant is a refreshing change-- like an off-Broadway production compared to the glitz of Disney's annual animated extravaganzas. Director Brad Bird may have Family Dog and The Simpsons to his credit, but this film doesn't have that brand of scatological humor. As with the best family entertainments, there are gags that adults will howl at while the kids are watching something else (see Bird's interpretation of cold war propaganda). And the star is one cool piece of animated magic. Voiced by Vin Diesel (Saving Private Ryan's hulking Private Caparzo) and filled with more gadgets than a Swiss army knife, the giant is a grand thing to behold. And like another famous cinema tin man, our hero--and the movie--has heart. Superb entertainment for ages 5 and up. --Doug Thomas
Description
A young boy rescues a huge robot which has rocketed to earth from space - and tries to protect the genial giant from a nosey government agent and the military. A captivating animated feature that's part metal, part magic and all heart.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Animated Film With Several Important Themes.......2007-06-16
This is a wonderful film that can be enjoyed by both adults and children. Though exciting in places the movie is never really scary since it soon becomes apparent that the giant is a friendly, helpful creation that needs to be protected by Hogarth not feared. The 1950's setting is well realized from the Cold War fears to the kids' obsession with superhero comic books. Several important themes are examined including the value of non-violence, the eternity of the soul and tolerance for beings that seem different. Some of these themes are presented subtly and others not so subtly. Despite the sometimes serious ideas presented there are many scenes that are "laugh out loud" funny.
The movie is welled voiced with Harry Connick Jr. perfect as Dean the beatnik/artist/scrap dealer and Jennifer Aniston as Hogarth's attractive mother. Hogarth is fully developed as a smart kid missing his dad, and enduring resentment from his less intelligent peers. The movie is adapted from Ted Hughes' children's novella of the same name and though both are well rendered they are vastly different from each other. As some other Amazon reviewers have noted this film is correctly rated PG not G for some mild cursing, intense moments and some humor involving a practical joke with a laxative.
Good Movie - Still.......2007-06-14
It's been a while since I watched this movie with my son - who is now 24. When I watched it with my two young God children (6 and 3), they had the same reaction he did. They did not from the tv.
This is a good movie - not violent, no profanity, just good and clean.
I wish they would make a sequel!
Fine for watching with older friends.......2007-06-04
I watched this flick three days ago after receiving the DVD.
I have to say that, compared to the silly pictures and cheapquels Disney was churning out during the same time period (except for the excellent Fantasia 2000), this is really good. It does not have talking animals, or stupid songs sung by the main characters, so it's safe to invite friends in their 30's or 40's to watch it.
It's true that it does have some violence, but it's not of the bloody kind, and most children won't be disturbed by it.
However, now that our minds are so used to eye-popping full-3D animation, and to much more action-packed animated movies, some might find this movie kinda slow and underwhelming. This was my case.
Awesome Movie- needs more advertising!.......2007-04-28
great movie! I don't know why it wasn't in the theaters. we just happened to run across a VHS several years ago and watched it for lack of something better. We found it was better than most! It's a fantastic story, with a hero's ending. A must see for adults as well as children. We're on our 2nd DVD (and we started with a VHS, this movie gets watched a lot!)
"Suupperrrrmmaaaaaaaaaaaan!!!".......2007-04-18
I just LOVE this movie. It is my favorite animated movie and although a few good ones have come along since then, I can't see anything else ever topping this one. I owned it many years before my son was born. I had seen it on cable, fell in love with it and bought the DVD hoping that one day I would share it with my kids if I ever had any. My four year old son and I watch it together and he loves it as much as I do. I cried the first few times I watched it and dozens and dozens of viewings later, it still chokes me up. It's a good wholesome movie with a lot of heart.

About the episodes on this DVD.......2007-06-26
The episode Sinbad Sails Alone was on the DVD called Mover's and Shaker's so that is one episode that wont be on this one but A giant Problem is a possibility with this one , seeing that The Secret Of Snow will most likely be on the Super Secret Super Spy DVD that comes out in September.
looking forward to seeing these episodes!.......2007-05-10
Based on various Backyardigans fansites and discussion among fans on a mailing list, it appears that the following episodes will be included on this DVD:
Into the Deep
Sinbad Sails Alone
Newsflash
Catch That Butterfly
There's also a fifth episode floating around, called "A Giant Problem". I'm not sure if that might be on this DVD in place of one of the four titles listed above or on the next DVD.
There has been speculation that the following two episodes would also be on this DVD, but it sounds as if they will be on their own DVD released in September:
International Super Spy, Part 1
International Super Spy, Part 2
Two of these episodes aired in April (supposedly- we TiVo the show several times daily and never caught them) and hopefully the SuperSpy episodes will air soon (the first two-parter Backyardigans episode, based on the James Bond films)
Should be excellent! I know my 19 month old is psyched.

Another great season..........2007-06-26
This is yet another great season from the makers of Magnum PI. It is a great addition to my collection. You really need to purchase it to see for yourself.
ups and downs..........2007-06-26
Every show has its ups and downs...and Magnum's downs are a lot higher than the ups of most shows...
-
Best TV Show ever.......2007-05-17
Easily the best tv show ever, every episode is a delight.
I dont mind if some dont like it, but some of the reviews of this by so called fans are nothing short of insane....maybe these people cant recognise quality...let them go and watch Big Brother and find their IQ level there.
Great series, great main actors, great characters...everything is just right...cant wait to get every season on dvd...considering the 8th season is so short...why cant we have season 7 and 8 in one package?!
Not Magnum at its finest hour, but necessary for the collection.......2007-05-15
Beginning with Season Five, the writers of Magnum P.I. began to tinker with the shows format. Something not out of the ordinary when a show reaches beyond the four season mark. While most of season five's episodes work with this new formula, season six tries to continue with this formula, but instead misses the boat more times than not. Gone are the days of Magnum swimming on the beach or hanging out at the club to meet a client. Higgins no longer bargains with Magnum for guest house privlidges, and their customary banter only happens occassionally. This was done perhaps, the emphasize the fact that Magnum was getting older, and several episodes stress the fact that he may soon want to do something else with his life. Even though Magnum is quick to point out how great Hawaii is, one can get the impression at times that he's searching for something with a little more meaning.
Overall, the tone of the season is darker and much more serious. Come to think of it, most episodes of season six are shot entirely out of Hawaii (Deja Vu, Going Home), and several episodes go by where you see no trace of the guest house or estate for that matter. Episodes like the previous two mentioned and "The Way of the Stalking Horse," are some of the year's bright spots. I give the writer's credit for trying to branch out, but Magnum's sharp decline in ratings at this time(Number 8 in 1984 to out of the top 30 by 1985) was an indication that viewers preffered the old formula, and that the show was running out of steam. All is well however, because season seven and eight revert back (for the most part) to the show's old formula. Although I have not seen all of these episodes, the one's I have (Missing Melody, Laura, Little Girl Who) are, in my opinion, some of the best of the series.
colossally, gratingly idiotic.......2007-05-15
For the first couple of seasons, Magnum P.I. was fresh and original.
But round about the second year, things started getting lame. Really lame. Having a private eye who drives a Ferrari and lives in Hawaii was a great setup, but honestly, the writers had pretty much done what could be done after about twenty episodes. After that, they had simply nowhere credible to go with the idea.
By the time we arrive at the fourth and fifth seasons, the writers were so completely out of ideas that every episode was jumping the shark. Nearly every outing was of the same worn ilk: one of Magnum (or Higgins's) long-lost but beloved acquaintances, whom we've never seen before, shows up out of nowhere; is in some sort of trouble, being followed, or wrongly implicated in some skullduggery. In the end, we are invariably relieved to discover that Magnum's "gut" was never off, and he always gets his man.
Over and over and over again.
And by the sixth season? You get to the point where you'd rather have molten lead poured into your nostrils than watch another minute.
I admit I liked the series when I was a kid, but it's just plain torture watching it now.
P.S. I am delighted that everybody hates this review!

There's a whole world waiting to be discovered right outside in the backyard--it just takes imagination and a little help from the Backyardigans. Nick JR's Backyardigans is a computer animated series about five preschool-age animals who spend their days playing together in a shared backyard. By using their imaginations, Pablo, Tyrone, Uniqua, Tasha and Austin experience life as ghosts, solve a monster mystery, embark on a quest to save Egypt from a drought, and search for buried treasure. Besides having lots of fun, the group learns about overcoming fears, the investigate process, and the importance of things like cooperation, sharing and saying please and thank you. Each of the four 25-minute episodes features a healthy selection of musical numbers in a specific musical style: 1920's jazz, 1960's rock-n-roll, Broadway musical, and reggae. Special DVD features include an introduction to each character and his or her personality, suggestions of "how to be a Backyardigan," and the music video "A Pirate Says Arrr." (Ages 18 months to 6 years) --Tami Horiuchi

Made My Baby Laugh..........2007-03-30
My husband and I just loved this DVD. We bought it for 'Samuri Pie'. It just made us smile and giggle. The added bonus is that Alicia Keys is in it. We knew it was a hit when our baby laughed along with it. We highly recommend this to all parents!
Excellent Series.......2007-03-23
My Son is 2.5 years old and I want to be sure he is watching what is appropriate for his age. This series is fantastic and encourages imagination. Great music and dance and my Son loves them all. This particular DVD features Alisha Keys and she is great as "Mommy Martian".
More Backyardigans fun!.......2007-03-20
Here is another DVD to add to your Backyardigans collection--this one with episodes from the newest season. My kids like the Mission to Mars episode--the alien is definitely this season's answer to "Sherman the Wormin." Enjoy!
