Big Eden has won the audience awards at just about every gay and lesbian film festival there is. Henry (Arye Gross) is an artist living in New York but still carrying a torch for the guy he had a crush on in high school. When his grandfather has a stroke, Henry returns to his Montana hometown, Big Eden, where he rediscovers friends he hasn't seen in years. His high school crush has since married, had children, and divorced--and seems ready to take some very different steps with his life. Big Eden is one of those implausibly tolerant towns where lesbians kiss each other in public and old coots in cowboy hats try to play matchmaker with bashful queers. Still, it's this sweet warmth in Big Eden that has made it a festival crowd-pleaser. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Big Eden, you've got to love this one...........2007-06-08

Definately not your run of the mill gay movie. Homophobia does not exist in it. It does not represent the world as is, but as it should be. Maybe we will learn how to love our fellow man enough to accept them as they are, not how we think they should be, as Christ taught us. Enjoyed it very much. No sex, just love.... worthy of you....

3 out of 5 stars Big Eden? Not in Montana........2007-05-23

I think "Big Eden" easily merits a five star rating in most respects. The film's acting, direction and especially casting are excellent. But I have to take a few stars away for its storyline, which is a confusing mix of believable fiction and nonsensical fantasy -- a mix that will appeal far more to some audiences than others. I've never been to any small town (let alone one in Montana) where the entire community seemed to have nothing else to do except matchmake gay couples. The absurdity of this premise detracted greatly from what I think is an otherwise outstanding film.

Tom Bezucha's story would have easily stood on its own, without the introduction of this absurd fantasy. We got proof of that claim five years later, in a film called "Brokeback Mountain". "Big Eden" is the same basic story, only far less dramatic and with a much happier ending. Compare Jack Twist to Henry Hart, and Ennis Del Mar to Dean Stewart.

5 out of 5 stars bottle this !!.......2007-02-28

big EDEN is unforgettable. (The bonus disc is also 5 stars.) I enjoyed every moment~ starting with Henry coming home to his loft w/cycle and cappucino, & o so pregnant Mary Margaret's hilarious scene while trying to convince Henry not to walk out on the Opening of his show. She's a gem! The spell this film casts should be bottled and distributed for free. and I have to confess, Eric Schweig is my favorite actor/dreamboat. I'll never recover from this performance! He moves deftly from a shy loner to Henry's beloved partner, and just acts from feeling the essential/simple aspects of love we all so easily race past moving from our concepts. Through Pike's eyes, we see that love can't be labeled, it's too fluent and unlimited. The entire cast shows talent and exuberance above and beyond the call. I loved the soundtrack, settings, emotional up/downs, granpa, and am jealous of Pike's dog. I'd follow him around too, if I could.

5 out of 5 stars If you have a romantic side..........2007-02-12

..."Big Eden" can disarm your cynicism and take you to a place you want to believe can exist where love (and conspiracies to enable love) reign supreme. Big Eden is Bali Hai, Shangri-La, and, of course, Eden itself.
Operating on the memory of liking the film when I first saw it some years ago, this Christmas I bought four copies as gifts for four special friends. Their thanks and feedback made me realize that I'd left myself out of something really good so I bought a copy just for me. Watching it anew was intensely joyful. A towel came in handy as I let myself fully experience the little town in Montana, the growth and development of the main characters, and the loving involvement of the tight-knit community of the town in the welfare of its members. How many people, gay or straight, yearn for such a community? I'm lucky in having something very much like it but in a big city rather than the magnificent natural setting of "Big Eden".
This movie speaks to so many of our needs and dreams; romance, family, close community, natural beauty, simplicity. If the protagonists were women, or men and women, "Big Eden", made with such love and positivity, would still be a jewel. I'll watch it from time to time for the rest of my life whenever I need a non-chemical anti-depressant, a tear-duct flush, or just a fine movie to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Big Eden.......2007-01-28

This is one of the best films that deals with relationships and friends that are accepting of a love and lifestyle that many can not understand. The acting was outstanding as well and the enviroment which the film took place. I must admit that all the acting in this film was done with feeling and true knowledge of who the actors and actorcess and thier parts in the film. Well done I have purchased the film and watch over and over again. Eric Sweig is one of the most outstanding actors I have seen, including this film, his role developes well as he shows his love for Henry.

On Saturday, July 2, 2005, ten concerts took place around the world as part of Live 8 in support of the campaign to Make Poverty History. One of these concerts was Africa Calling, organized by Peter Gabriel and held in the Eden Project in Cornwall, South West England. Produced in association with WOMAD, the day featured an exclusive lineup of some of Africa's finest artists, performing in the spectacular setting of Eden. 5 out of 5 stars Africa Calling! .......2006-06-12

This is the only Live 8 concert that featured predominantly African performers. I have come to know many African performers by contimplations by Putumayo Records and with working with African Refugees in America. It was fun to see these performers on DVD and appreciate their music even more. I really enjoyed the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Live 8 Eden - The Roots of Africa.......2005-10-13

I was lucky enough to attend the Cornwall event at the Eden Project. For those who are unfamiliar with the venue, it is an area in Cornwall, England that had huge biodomes. Guests can come to learn about all kinds of plant life and discover the green planet. This leg of the Live 8 concert was a bit different in that it included primarily performers from Africa. It was a heartfelt relaxed day mixed with music and dance. I imagine that the other Live 8 events were more commercial. (...) The day was absolutely memorable and I woudl strongly suggest picking up this DVD to learn more about the music and cultures of Africa.
