Billy Bob Thornton's white-trash comedy has loads of appeal, beginning with a delightful cast playing the most dysfunctional Southern family outside a Faulkner novel. Thornton and Laura Dern play married couple Claude and Ruby Montgomery, whose true love is stymied by petty jealousies over her old boyfriends and his long-ago romance with Ruby's sister, Rose (Kelly Preston). When Claude's Uncle Hazel (Jim Varney) is arrested, the duo join their extended clan in Little Rock to provide support for him and his defense team (a stormy couple sharply played by Jamie Lee Curtis and Ben Affleck). But cooperation is an alien concept to this family; in no time they're bickering, drinking, and deflating dreams. Typical of Thornton, this is serious yet funny stuff, and the actors--including Andy Griffith, John Prine, Diane Ladd, and Brenda Blethyn--work that fine line between drama and comedy with admirable inspiration. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Recommended to all people of all races.......2007-06-21

Perry's theatrical experience comes in to play throughout the picture and I like it. He doesn't get into drag and play Madea in this movie -- in fact, he doesn't appear onscreen at all (unless he had an unaccredited cameo where I didn't recognize him). The final product remains representative of the writer/director/producer's abilities and his common themes of the power of family and how much a community can accomplish when they band together. "Daddy's Little Girls" has its funny moments, but overall it's fairly somber from the start.

The movie's opening scene is a montage of people of different ages on a city street, with children playing and men cooking dinner on the grill and women chit-chatting, showing the good aspects of a close-knit neighborhood. Later in the film, Willie stands up in a community meeting with police and politicians and tells his neighbors that the police and government have never and will never do anything to help them, and they all have to band together to help themselves. Perry grew up in New Orleans, and wondered if this scene was meant to reflect his feelings about the poor handling of post-Katrina rebuilding by, well, by damn near everyone except the residents themselves.

The one benefit of Julia (Gabrielle Union) and Monty's (Idris Elba) relationship is that it allows the story to branch out to wax philosophical about one more conflict: class. Julia's friends are not the kind to be amused or in favor of a relationship between a successful legal partner and a struggling auto-mechanic. The snobbery allows the movie to take on some of the all-too-frequent stereotypes that are automatically applied to black men, particularly ideas about being a "baby's daddy" or forty-year-olds in over-sized jerseys. Monty breaks all of these stereotypes as a caring, responsible adult who is still struggling through life despite those character traits. It's nice to see this kind of positive role model portrayed strongly on screen instead of reinforcing negative ideas.

Parts of "Daddy's Little Girls" may be predictable and convenient as the movie tells its tale but there's not necessarily anything wrong with that. The film is one of those ubiquitous "feel good movies" and as such it does its job well. When the final credits roll you'll feel good and maybe, through the film's attempts to challenge a few negative stereotypes, even feel a little better about the human race's ability to come together in moments of adversity. You'll laugh; probably tear a little; and most importantly feel good. Isn't that enough for a movie to provide sometimes?

This is a great movie! I am glad to have it as part of my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Oh My Goodness.......2007-06-20

I absolutely looooooooved this film! First of all, this was a perfect example of good casting. All of the charachters seemed so believable, and the chemistry between them all was great as well. This is the third time I've seen Gabriel Union play this kind of charachter (kind of stuck up and well to do) and I kind of get tired of it, but I loved her here. Especially when she was drunk and immitating Lil Jon! My favorite charachter(s) had to be the Macclain Sisters. They were GREAT! Their sassiness could almost put you off at first but when you think about it, children really do behave that way.

This was a lovely film, and I just thank God for Tyler Perry and the positive message he put's out in his movies. It doesn't have to be about Get Rich or Die Trying all the time, or shoot 'em up, bang-bang, or all this other garbage black film makers put out now. He put out a nice film where for once the black man isn't the enemy and it's a great piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and a huge improvement for Tyler Perry and Company.......2007-06-21

This story of a blue collar father's fight for custody of his three daughter's from his blatantly selfish and irresponsible ex wife was excellent. Idris Elba is a woefully underrated actor from England who was perfect in this role. I have been a fan since seeing him in the dramatic film "Sometimes in April" which deals with the affect of the Rwandan genocide on two brothers who have opposing idealogies. In that film Idris was awesome as a family man with three children and a wife to protect while the world was spiraling out of control around them. If you haven't seen it, check it out Idris and the rest of the supporting cast are superb.

Here in Daddy's Little Girl's Idris once again gives a honest, heart-felt performance. The chemistry between Idris and Gabrielle Union was great and I loved the date scene at the club where they first begin to really bond. Gabrielle was so amusing playing someone who loosens up after a couple of drinks and reveals a sweet heart under the tough "corporate woman" exterior, another one of my favorite scenes is how humorous she is when she gets home from the club. There wasn't one "false note" in her performance in the film, I enjoyed her throughout.

The three girls in the movie are also biological sisters and were cast perfectly, they each have great talent and I am certain we will be seeing a lot of more of them. Lou Gossett is the headliner and his part as a mentor and friend to Idris is also a great addition to the cast.

My least favorite character is the ex-wife's lover who grossly overplayed all of his scenes.

Overall this is a feel good movie and Tyler Perry's most even-handed attempt at producing and directing. As mentioned the casting of the leading man and woman was right on point, far superior to all the other TP movies. Tyler is continuing to grow in his craft and I look forward to more family-friendly movies from him that deal with life's many challenges.

P.S. I also loved the blues song performed live at the club where Idris and Gabrielle have their first date! Too bad its not on the soundtrack...a sad oversight.

Pros: I am crazy about this movie. I saw it at the show when it first came out, and I was impressed that once again Tyler Perry has come out with a positive movie for the African American community (as well as any other community) to relate to. I'd never been a Gabrielle Union fan, but she definitely did a great job in this movie, and every single time I see her drunk act at the bar and her house, I fall out laughing. Nobody could've played the handsome man's man role that Idris Elba played. I was not familiar with him before this movie, but boy, am I a fan now. He has undeniable sex appeal. Daddy's Little Girls takes viewers on a ride through a father's life who is trying his hardest to take care of his children and maintain a decent lifestyle, even though he has a dark past and an ex-girlfriend/mother of his children from Hell. I already knew Tasha Smith was going to be a great evil mother since I consistently watch "America's Next Top Model" and I've seen her as an acting coach. The young girls were great playing sassy, intelligent kids, and it was a joy to see the people from Perry's previous plays. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and as soon as it came out on sale, I went flying out of the house to buy it. I'm not convinced that I'll ever get tired of seeing it.

Cons: The guys who played thugs weren't believable at all, especially the main one. He was handsome and he was cool, but nothing about him said thug to me. Even the dudes who jumped the guy who was selling something looked like they were fresh off a college campus. I know Perry wanted to keep the movie PG-13 so I'm guessing that's the reason he didn't go for more hardened characters. That or he was going for dapper thugs.

5 out of 5 stars TYLER PERRY IS A ROCKSTAR!!!.......2007-06-19

TP rocked this movie for real. It has everything, you'll laugh, cry, get frustrated, angry and cheer for Monty. A hard working man that is trying to live life on the right side of the tracks so that he can take care of his girl It is so great to see a man not only step up and take care of their children but FIGHT to keep them. Julia is a hard nosed no nonsense profession woman that learns that sometimes you have to let go and let love. (kinda seen her in this role in Deliver Us From Eva)However Gabrelle Union and Idris Elba (whom I didnt know was from London)played these roles to perfection

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Loved it.......2007-06-18

I went to see this movie when it first was released in the theaters, then picked up a copy of the movie just this past Friday, and I highly recommend the movie to folks because for one, it doesn't have no nudity or sex scenes, you can relate to what is going on, especially if you have been through a custody battle like I have, and what I love about it is the romance. You can tell that Idris and Gabrielle were feeling each other(had a mutual attraction for those who didn't get that earlier statement), and they kept it without getting into a scene and all that. i respect Tyler for that. Another thing that I took away from this was the sense of community that was there. This guy was absolutely scared to raise three girls by himself, but stepped to the plate and gave it his best shot. He made mistakes, he endured heat from others as well as those he loved, but through it all, he kept his head on and you cannot help but love Idris Elba for it.The McClain Sisters were adorable and look forward to more from them. A part of the movie I didn't care for was Tracee Ellis Ross and Terri Vaughan's roles as the judgmental, funky girlfriends who poo pooed on Julia(Gabrielle Union's role)for Monty and his life, but yet they kept hooking her up with silly, hilarious, funky trifling men. One was married to boot. I truly loved the Aquarium scene and have made a mental note to go to the Georgia Aquarium myself and admire that for myself. Very good feel good, emotional film.

For anyone who wants to catch a glimpse of the Los Angeles "lounge" scene that was in vogue during the early and mid-1990s, here's the movie that virtually defined that brief but colorful nightlife milieu. As an added bonus, it just happens to be a very funny, observant story about love, loss, and male bonding among a group of friends who struggle to find decent jobs by day, and lurk through Hollywood's hottest nightclubs by night. A sort of latter-day Rat Pack, they include Mike (writer-actor Jon Favreau) and his closest buddy, Trent (Vince Vaughn), who are waiting for the big show-biz break that seems to be eluding them. Mike's twisted up about the girlfriend he left back East to pursue his going-nowhere standup comedy career, and Trent uses the word "money" as an adjective ("Man, we look totally money tonight") with such frequency that you may find yourself slipping into lounge-lizard mode after watching the movie. One of the most noteworthy indie-film success stories of the '90s, this time-capsule comedy seized its moment in the spotlight, launched several promising careers, and continues to maintain its lasting appeal. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Perfection. BIG $$ ain't the key to a good film!.......2007-05-29

Jon Favreau wrote a fantastic script; Doug Liman directed a great flick; Vince Vaughn owned the film. 'Nuf said!

OK, maybe a little more. This has got to be one of, if not THE, greatest indie films of all time.

And, like I said, BIG MONEY doesn't make a great movie. There have been plenty of big dollar box office flops, but you can probably count on 1 hand (maybe 2) the number of films that were made for what equates to peanuts and still totally own every minute on the screen.

This was an instant cult classic, acclaimed by critics, and it got the big-time attention it deserved later on.

Mike, an every day "joe", broke up with his girl, moved to L.A. to be a comedian, and settled in to a long time funk. His "west coast" pals, some real characters (enter Vince Vaughn and Patrick Van Horn), give him all the right advice which Mike uses at the wrong time. His "east coast" pal (Ron Livingston) tries to keep Mike grounded.

But, basically what you get is a train wreck in the love department, backlit by the glitz of Vegas and the back-alley bar scene of L.A. Anyone can relate to Mike and most of us have had moments like the other guys too.

Just check out this movie. A review or summary just can't do it justice. It is intelligent, sappy (in a good way), relatable and HILARIOUS.

FYI, great soundtrack to boot.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific "old school" feel good movie!.......2007-05-28

Great movie, with lots of one-liners, and a must-see for the serious Vince Vaughn fan. Jon Favreau is perfect as his buddy, Mike, whose lines in the movie cannot be forgotten. Captures the ideal late '90's swing era to a T.

5 out of 5 stars Go, Daddy-O!.......2007-05-24

Few films have explored the pain of being a 20-something single as hilariously as Doug Liman's classic "Swingers." If you've never seen this film, which packs a bevy of memorable scenes and spawned several catch phrases ("You're so money!"), it's high time you checked it out.

"Swingers" follows the ups and downs (mostly downs) of Mike (Jon Favreau), a struggling actor who has recently moved to Los Angeles from New York. When he moved, he left behind a girlfriend of six years, and he hasn't been able to get her off his mind, a problem that's exasperated by his lack of success on the L.A. singles scene.

Fortunately for Mikey, he's got some buddies who are bent on cheering him up, most notably the smooth-talking Trent (Vince Vaughn), who convinces Mike to make an impromptu trip to Vegas to wash away his problems with gambling, women and booze. It's the first of many unsuccessful (and roaringly funny) forays into the singles scene for Mikey, who is alternately too nice, too nervous, and too neurotic to achieve any level of success with the ladies.

This sort of material has been mined with much less success by many movies, but "Swingers" has three noteworthy forces working for it: star Favreau's superb script, a great cast and Liman's top-notch direction.

The witty screenplay delivers enough laughs and memorable lines to reward repeat viewings, from Trent's boast that he's going to "Find me two cocktail waitresses and pull me a Fredo" to a hilarious conversation between Mike, Trent and the rest of the crew about how long you should wait before calling a girl whose "digits" you got.

Liman, who also directed the excellent "Go," throws in a a number of deft touches that add to the script. Check out the slo-mo walking scene that's an amusing homage to Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs." Or the unusual imagery complete with "Jaws" music to illustrate Trent's growing discomfort with a girl he just met.

The ensemble cast is terrific, with special kudos to the two leads, Favreau and Vaughn. Favreau is outstanding as the lovable nice-guy loser Mike, giving a deeply funny and even touching performance. Case in point: Mike's ill-advised attempt to leave a message on the answering machine of a hottie he met just a few hours before. As the womanizing Trent, Vaughn exudes star charisma, delivering his lines with flair without falling into cartoonish excess.

Despite its low budget and unknown (at the time) director and cast, "Swingers" became a modest indie hit. Now, a decade after its release, great word-of-mouth buzz has transformed it into a deserving cult classic.

4 out of 5 stars A fair treatise on the random order of Life.......2007-05-12

The turbulence, despair, and despondency of navigating the multiple persons that occupy the space between significant relationships is obvious in this film. Although the production of this movie is fair, the arbitrary chance at play in meeting someone of significance is painfully well-represented here. Although I think this movie gets better with a second view, and it is a possible "sleeper", I would not consider it as part of a "Collector's Series" - seems like a stretch, an overzealous marketing effort.

Gosh--kids. You gotta love 'em, right? Well, not necessarily-- particularly if you're Adam Sandler. But Big Daddy is about paternal devotion in its own oblique way. Sandler plays Sonny Koufax, a law-school grad who has been milking an accident settlement to cover his living expenses, while he continues to slack his way through life. But when his girlfriend threatens to dump him, he decides to show her he's serious about their relationship and pretends to adopt a little boy (in fact, his roommate's son from a one-night stand several years earlier, who shows up on their doorstep just after the roommate leaves town on a job). But after taking care of the tyke for a couple of days, Sonny finds that it's a little like feeding that stray dog that followed you home: Before you know it, you've grown attached to the little fella--and then what are you going to do? By turns crude and maudlin, Big Daddy has its share of laughs and will certainly entertain fans who like Adam Sandler best when he plays the case of arrested development with a smart-aleck retort for everything. --Marshall Fine

4 out of 5 stars A nice comedy.......2006-10-19

If there is one thing that Adam Sandler does well, that's comedy, and Big Daddy is just that: a good comedy.
The movie brings to the screen the story of a good-hearted though rather lazy and immature young man who in an effort to save his relationship attempts to impress his girlfriend by adopting a five-year-old boy!
Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well.
The setting, the plot, and the dialogues are all good, though what was the point of incorporating a homosexual couple into this movie? It came out of the blue and served no purpose whatsoever, except to taint the overall mood.
In a nutshell, it's probably not a movie you would want to add to your collection, but it will surely provide for an evening's entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Big Daddy is Big Hit........2006-08-06

Big Daddy is about a guy named Sonny (Adam Sandler) who adopts a 5 year old kid (Julian) under the name of his room-mate, Kevin Garrety (Jon Stewart) to impress his girlfriend Vanessa (Kristy Swanson). He finds out his girlfriend is dating an older guy and Sonny is dumped and left with the kid. Sonny decides he can take care of him until Social Services can find an foster home for him, but Sonny falls in love with the kid and avoids Social Services. Then Social Services finds out Sonny was using Kevin's name and they take the kid away. Sonny tries to fight for him, but unable to get him and custody goes to the real Kevin who is in China for most of the movie. Juilan wants Sonny to be his dad, but Sonny says he can't, but he can always be his friend. So the movie ends at a happy note.
During the movie you'll have some laughs, giiggles and some tear jerking scenes. The funniest part of the movie is the court room scene, with Nazo, Mr. Hurley and the Bum. I almost cried when Social Services takes Julien away.
Overall great story-line. By far the best comedy and great story to a movie.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite.......2006-08-06

Honestly this is one of my favorite Adam Sandler movies. I honestly don't know why. There are just so many hilarious things in this movie. My favorite are Steve Buscemi and Rob Schneiders characters, especially when they are arguing in the court room. If you like Adam Sandler, then you should get this movie. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Big Daddy.......2006-07-07

Adam Sandler plays a guy that thinks he can rebuild
his relationship by adopting a three-year old boy. After
he adopts the little boy, he goes to his ex-girlfriend's
house only to find her dating another older man. He
eventually tells the adoption service that he wants to
give the little boy back, but he becomes very attached
to him and decides to keep him.

Few movies, documentary or otherwise, capture the relaxed exuberance of Dave Chappelle's Block Party. This is Chappelle's first project since his show on Comedy Central received so much popular and critical attention that he apparently had a psychological meltdown and fled to Africa to escape. You can still see a hint of weariness and wariness in his eyes--but even more you can see his relief to be launching a project that bears no expectations. Funded by his own money and free to all who attended, Chappelle set up a secret concert location in Brooklyn and pulled together a musical lineup of stellar acts, including Erykah Badu, Kanye West, Mos Def, Jill Scott, Common, the Roots, Dead Prez, and the reunion of the Fugees, all of whom give vibrant performances. But Block Party doesn't just capture the show; at least a third of the movie is Chappelle wandering around Brooklyn or the Ohio neighborhood where he lives and interacting with the people he meets, many of whom he gives free tickets for the show. These scenes, combined with footage of the performers rehearsing or just gassing around before the show, offer a sense that for Chappelle performing is just an extension of his everyday life; that he takes just as much pleasure from goofing around with one person as he does goofing around in front of hundreds or thousands. Putting together this event becomes a unique self-portrait as well as an experience that rejuvenated Chappelle. If you surrender to the vitality of the show and Chappelle's loose comic jazz, you may find it rejuvenating too. --Bret Fetzer

Its more a concert than a comedy video, I was specting more time on air by Chapelle, but the invited singuers are great one. Gotta love soul.....

Dave's Video is really a party & a cool look a the whole production thing

4 out of 5 stars The Chappelle you wernt expecting.......2007-04-26

I really enjoyed seeing a different side to Dave. I agree with most reviewers that this movie is not really funny by any means, but it gave me a new light to the comedian. There is a serious and very respectable side to Mr. Chappelle and i feel he is the next big comedian to hit our generation. I never knew Chappelles understanding and respect for jazz music and his dedication to learning Round Midnight by the great Monk. He brings up almost "almost" a philosophical way of looking at how comedians and musicians intertwine. I enjoyed it, the replay value isn't there though. There was not enough footage of the music performances. It could have been set up into 2 parts i felt, The Concert, and than his little documentary, but it wasnt set up like that. Overall i gained some respect for Dave after seeing this

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could've been there too!.......2007-03-22

It's as if someone downloaded one of my dreams. If I were to wish for a dream movie, this would be it. Not only does it have concert performances by some of my favourite hip-hop and neo-soul artistes ever - Kanye West, Common, Mos Def, The Roots, dead prez, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu, just to name a few - it's all presented by my favourite comedian ever (well, maybe apart from Chris Rock), the fantastic Dave Chappelle. The movie was shown on TV here a few weeks ago and after seeing it the once, I just knew I had to see it again and ordered the DVD immediately.

Basically, we get to follow Dave as he returns to his hometown in Ohio to pass out invitations to his block party in Brooklyn, New York, including to an entire college or high school marching band. We get to see how he puts the show together and finally, we get to see the show itself. All the while, Dave peppers the movie here and there with his unique and inimitable humour.

Watching the movie, I was reminded of several things: One, how powerful hip-hop music is and how I need to try and get out and see more concerts before I'm finally too old to do so; Two, how beautiful and talented black people are; And three, how I need to get a couple of CDs added to my collection, particularly Erykah Badu's Worldwide Underground and Cody Chesnutt's The Headphone Masterpiece. I might actually get the soundtrack to the movie while I'm at it.

But more than anything else, I was reminded of the fact that Dave Chappelle is probably one of the funniest, most engaging and most charming comedians of our time. I love him to death. He says it was the "best single day" of his career and I believe him. He really seemed to relish the opportunity to put the show together for people, many of whom might never have had the opportunity to attend such an event.

It was also particularly interesting to see The Fugees on stage but while all three members gave a good performance, Lauryn Hill's heart didn't seem to be in it at all. Later on when she spoke to camera, her eyes just seemed dead.

The DVD has some pretty cool extras. Extended music acts, (you can play the movie either in its original format or with the extended concert performances), A short documentary "The Ohio Players: The Bus Ride", and two others "September in Brooklyn" and "The Making of Block Party".

I can't seem to get the subtitles to work on the main movie though but that's no big thing. I'm so glad I bought this DVD and can already see myself playing it over and over and never getting tired of it.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I were there!.......2007-01-19

One of the best concerts I've ever seen. I love just about everything Dave Chappelle does. I loved it soooo much I bought the CD too.

There are some good laughs to be found in Daddy Day Care, especially if you're a preschooler with energy to burn. This romper-room comedy shamelessly exploits its high concept idea--dropping Eddie Murphy into a seething den of rugrats--but kids will have plenty of vicarious fun as Murphy and his fellow laid-off colleague (Jeff Garlin) battle unemployment by opening a day-care center in Eddie's home. In partial Witches mode, Anjelica Huston hams it up as a day-care competitor bent on closing Eddie down, while doofus extraordinaire Steve Zahn is recruited as a third partner in "Daddy Day Care," trying his best to entertain a pack of hyperactive kids who've stopped taking their Ritalin. Zahn makes a funny Star Trek fan (even when the script contains bogus Trekkie trivia), and Murphy deserves credit for giving his all in a comedy that mostly squanders his talent. Indeed, is Daddy Day Care a comedy or every parent's nightmare? Daring viewers can decide for themselves. --Jeff Shannon

I have always been a Eddie Murphy fan since i was a little girl. This movie is the best, the kids are so cute! Eddie Murphy, Jeff Garlin, and Steve Zahn are great in this movie.

If you are a baby sitter, work with kids, or just love kids period this is a must see movie. I finally ordered it on DVD, now i get to watch it anytime i want!

5 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Movie Everyone Can Appreciate.......2007-04-02

This is an adorable movie and was defiantly worth my time. It's about a guy who loses his job and his and his friends trying to run a day care. They have plenty of road blocks getting started but really start to care for the kids and eventually they get the daycare business under wraps.

But a competing school has gotten upset and tries to shut down Daddy Day Care, by calling the health dept. Still, they make the requirements and continue on their way. All of a sudden they get their jobs back but end up going back, but the day care jobs they've given up turn out to be more important than the high powered jobs they went back to so it's back to the day care again.

This movie was invigorating and shows father son relationships. Also the equality of man and women and what they can do, job wise. Overall, kids and parents alike will enjoy the movie. I defiantly recommend this for families and friends everywhere.

REVIEW DISCLAIMER:
Please note: This review is for my viewing of the this movie in the PSP UMD format. I have not reviewed this movie in the DVD format. Amazon does not offer a spot for reviews in the PSP UMD format, therefore, I am placing my review here.

First of all, I should point out, I'm a HUGE Eddie Murphy fan, back to his days on Saturday Night Live. To the best of my knowledge, his professional career began on Saturday Night Live, with Joe Piscopoe, and even the lady from Seinfeld, (can't remember her name.)

So, you might say, I'm a little biased. But if you see my other reviews for movies like 48 hours, and Another 48 hours, you'll see, that I don't let my biases cloud my judgement. And my feelings after seeing this movie, are that Eddie Murphy is one of the most hilarious individuals on the face of the earth. And this movie showcases his talents, to no end!

I really enjoy his interaction with his little boy, his wife, and the other kids and adults. He is very versatile, and clever.

I would recommend this movie. It rocks!

Description

Fred Astaire becomes both the benefactor and suitor of Leslie Caron in this charming story of a playboy who falls under the spell of a beautiful French orphan. While traveling through France, Jervis Pendleton lll (Astaire) anonymously sponsors an 18-year-old girl named Julie (Caron), whom he sends to college in America. Two years later they finally meet face to face and start to fall in love. But complications arise and their happiness is threatened when Jervis embarks on a noble yet misguided attempt to do "the right thing" about their age difference. Featuring imaginative production numbers and a Johnny Mercer score that includes the 1955 Oscar® -nominated hit for Best Song "Something's Gotta Give", Daddy Long Legs is a song-filled blend of dance and fantasy for romantics of all ages.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Daddy Long Legs.......2007-03-24

I think this is one of Fred Astaire's best. A lot of people rave about "Top Hat," but I like his later movies better. His dancing is exceptional. The only problem I have with the film is it's another of the "teen age girl falls in love with old man" movies. That hasn't changed much over the years if you've seen any Clint Eastwood movies. Of course, I am an old man who would like to think it could happen to me.

Fred is a "stand-up, elegant" dancer compared with Gene Kelly who is a "squat low, gymnastics" dancer. Both are great. In this film, I think Leslie Caron was superb. She had an air of innocence which she portrayed very well and she is such a lovely dancer. I think she fits as a dance partner better with Fred that with Gene who is better suited with someone like Cyd Charisse.

I saw the movie when it first came out in 1955 and several times since. It has remained one of my favorites because of the music and dance routines more than the storyline. I would have purchased it earlier, but it wasn't digitized for DVD until 2005 and I didn't want the VHS version.

If you are a fan of musicals like I am, you will love this film.

5 out of 5 stars A touch of Old Fashioned Charm.......2007-02-21

This is a Musical for the discerning. Someone who appreciates the way things 'use to be'. Mr Astaire executes with effortless elegance, grace and 100% charm.
A Youthful Leslie Caron almost flawlessly mirrors Mr. Astaire's natural effortlessness and makes you wish that you had enough talent to look so relaxed partnering a legendary entertainer.

If you enjoy the innocent/natural charisma of a bygone era with its genteel elegance....you cannot go past this classic!

On the downside [purely personal taste] I think that Miss Caron's 'fade to dream dance sequences' are too long and too numerous to hold my attention and don't add enough 'value' to the overall storyline.

Ultimately, Uncle Jervis is everyone woman's dream man [fully loaded, without the traditional 'drop dead/georgeous' skin deep covering...but what he lacks in 'looks' is outweighed by his endless charm, charisma and downright Godgiven talent! Delightful!

4 out of 5 stars Delightful Golden Oldie.......2007-01-14

Daddy Longlegs is a wonderful movie showcasing the great dancing of both Fred Astaire and Leslis Caron. If you are a fan of either, this is a must-have. There's also some good extras on the DVD.

Description

They wanted Daddy's loveÂ...but they'll settle for his dough! A "terrific cast" (Leonard Maltin) Â- including Beau Bridges, Beverly D'Angelo, Tess Harper and Judge Reinhold Â- star in this wickedly funny comedy of heirs about a Texas family who gather to mourn Â- and perhaps to mine Â- the memory of their dear ole dad. Scheming Orville (Bridges), nympho Evalita (D'Angelo), loyal Sara Lee (Harper) and self-righteous Lurlene (Amy Wright) are all very frantic when they learn that their daddy's dyin'Â...mostly because they can't find his last legal will and testament! But as old grudges and suppressed desires are aired, this family reunion becomes a wild free-for-all Â- and a "touching, unpredictable [and] affectionate drama" (San Francisco Chronicle)!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites.......2007-03-16

I had almost forgotten this little movie. It is at times hilarious, tearful, one of those movies you want to see again a year or two later. The cast is perfect and growing up in the deep south, I recognized many of the characters and the situations. You always have the "trashy" one, the "churchy" one, the one who stays home to take care of aging parents, and the beer drinking loud-mouth. It was a treat to find this movie again.

3 out of 5 stars Daddy's Dyin' Whose Got the Will?.......2006-08-18

I loved watching this movie with my grandmother growing up. I'd have sleepovers at my grandparents house and I'd always want to watch this film. The characters in this movie are entertaining and they will remind you of your own family in some way. I'm not sure why this movie is so unpopular, but if you caught it on TV or just came across this DVD online- buy it and watch it with your own family.

5 out of 5 stars One to see.......2005-11-25

I caught this movie accidentally on cable and fell in love immediately. The characters and interactions are colorful and entertaining with plenty of one-line humor as well as "inside jokes" that will keep you wanting to know more about the family as individuals and as a unit. From Beverly D'Angelo's (Evalita) provacative singing, Molly McClure's (Mama Wheelis) witty honesty, Judge Reinholds (Harmony) golden locks, all the way down to the dysfunctional relationship between Beau Bridges (Orvil) and Patrika Darbo (Marlene) I think you'll also find this to be one of the best comedy drama movies ever.

4 out of 5 stars Little Film with Big Appeal.......2005-07-19

I saw this little movie by accident in 1991 at the dollar theater. I thought I would be in for the most awful two hours of my life but I absolutely loved it.
Over and over, this film brought out the little things that happen when a big Texas family comes together; those things you can't put your finger on but know immediately when you see it.
Great performances from the whole cast--everyone nailed the often-mocked-but-hard-to-get-it-right Texas drawl.
So glad this finally came out on DVD. I'll watch it whenever I get homesick.

4 out of 5 stars More fun than a barrel of monkeys!.......2005-04-10

A good plot with loveable characters. The kitchen scene with "Harmony" Judge Reinhold & "Marlene" Patrika Darbo kept me in stiches for days!

Robert Townsend has managed to build an entire career on the basis of one funny movie (The Hollywood Shuffle)--even though he hasn't had one that was anywhere near as funny since. Case in point: This would-be comedy about an unwilling black superhero. Townsend plays a schoolteacher in a bad Washington, D.C., neighborhood that is controlled by a vicious drug gang (recognizable by their blonde-dyed hair). Then he is hit by a meteor and suddenly finds that he has super strength and can fly (and can read the minds of dogs). But Townsend's writing is surprisingly weak and, despite a cast that includes a mugging Bill Cosby, Eddie Griffin, Robert Guillaume, and sadly miscast James Earl Jones, this movie is never able to get off the ground. --Marshall Fine

Description

Robert Townsend (Hollywood Shuffle) leads an all-star cast including Marla Gibbs, Eddie Griffin, Robert Guillaume, James Earl Jones and Bill Cosby in this laugh-out-loud, feel-good comic fantasy about a reluctant superhero on a crusade to save his neighborhood. Move over, Superman! Spineless Jefferson Reed (Townsend) has just discovered his backbone and it's stronger than steel! Amild-mannered substitute teacher, Jefferson would rather run than fight until he's hit by a strangegreen meteor that gives him superhuman abilities. And when a gang led by a powerful drug lord begins terrorizing his family and neighbors, Jefferson has no choice but to don his homemade spandex suitand take it on in a war of cunning, wit and super-powered, super-modeling prowess'to save his 'hood!

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-03-25

i live in okinawa, japan. anything i order takes about 2 weeks to get here. my movie came in three days!

3 out of 5 stars Lots of cameo's.......2007-02-07

It was an ok movie, and it had madd cameo's it had Chris Tucker, Bill Cosby and a lot of famous black actors. That aspect maid the movie good.

3 out of 5 stars Simply wasted potential.......2006-09-16

Strange movie. I find it both incredibly stupid and yet entertaining. I dont mean stupid in a campy fun way. I mean "What lame brained idiot wrote this?!?" kind of stupid. If it weren't for such a large array of a very talented all-star cast this movie would have no hope whatsoever. I do admit, as stupid Meteor Man was I actually enjoyed some parts of it very much.

Character development is a major crapfest in this movie. Our hero in my opinion takes way too long to figure out what he has to do and ends up dragging the movie because of it. The villains are major stupids in their entire 'coolness' splendor. What's the deal with the gold Slinky? Pretty much all the characters are pretty one-dimensional and simple minded. That's not to say the acting was the same way. As a matter of fact the acting was superb all things considered. With such big names like Rob Townsend, Bill Cosby, James Earl Jones, Sinbad, and whole mess of others I'm not surprised the acting came up aces. As a matter of fact that's probably the only thing that saved this movie.

Being a superhero movie the special effects are pretty standard for things like flying, laser eyes and of course a crashing meteor (that seems to home in on our hero). In other words the special effects are functional. The things to look for are a few scenes that do shine above all the crap in the rest of the movie. The final fight scene, by the way, is not one of them. For one it's painfully long. I was begging for the final scene to be over it was taking so long. Plus, like much of the writing, it ends up being very, very stupid.

If only a condensed version of this movie was made to squeeze out the lame parts and leave in the good stuff I can recommend it. As it stands you would have to sit through some dumb scenes to get to the good stuff. If you have nothing better to do then give The Meteor Man a chance. Just keep in mind it will be a waiting game here and there until you get to the truly fun scenes.

5 out of 5 stars A funny and sincere classic .......2006-01-15

Meteor Man is sort of a comedy but it teaches you lessons as well. This is a great movie to show to older kids. While trying to be funny it puts across messages that should be taken in and followed. Now maybe people hate the movie because of Robert Townsend's attempt of a wacky super hero or maybe it's just because they have no imagination and can't get on his level.
The story is original and deals with the problems on the streets and Townsend gave what everyone wanted in a neighborhood being harassed by crime, he gave them a super hero. There's a lot of funny scenes in this movie but it took on problems that needed to be dealt with and if Robert Townsend gets low ratings for Meteor Man then maybe nothing will ever change.

3 out of 5 stars Funny Cult Classic.......2006-01-15

I thought it was funny when I first saw it back in the 90's and I baught it two weeks ago. RT reminds me of Eddie Murphy in his role as Meteor Man. You have to be open to this kind of humor to enjoy it. The special effects are good as well. Worth a look.

...but it makes me sad the level of truth behind it. What makes me sadder is that this kind of mentality still exists today. I would definitely rank this one up with the likes of Boys in The Hood and New Jack City.

One of the overlooked gang movies, with exceptional realism against the same backdrop as "Boyz n Hood," the undeserved Hollywood-styled movie. "South Central," on the other hand, gets more from the cast and B-movie economics than "Hood." The director and writer narrow the aim and score more for doing so, in my opinion. Of those who play at violence, the plot centers on one who owns up to his bad ways and pays the price. Gang warfare, the soup de jour of Hollywood, makes too much money off bad languange and violence. This B-movie responsibly shows the price for dead-end lifestyles that embrace drugs and violence as the only alternatives. Gang warfare is as obsolete today as dueling in the 16th Century. This is one movie that asks its youth to take responsibilty, reform themselves through self-education,not to waste their freedom that comes with deadly consequences.

When you think about it, many 'hood movies dropped around the early 90's, like "Boyz N The Hood", "New Jack City", "Menace II Society" etc. All of these got the recognition they deserved, and they have all stood the test of time, as all of them are over 10 years old. However, there is one movie that didn't get the recognition and publicity that it should have. This is the 1991 "South Central". South Central is a great hood movie with a different twist to it than the others I mentioned. It is also very touching in certain places. It takes place in Los Angelas just like almost all these other hood movies so that's no surprise.

The movie starts off with a young Bobby Johnson getting out of jail. After fighting with a local drug-dealer over his girlfriend, he kills the drug-dealer who's name is Genie Lamp. He lays low for a few months, then he decides to ride out with a few other members of the Deuce gang, which he is part of. They pick up an undercover cop along the way, and she busts them for possession. While the newly proclaimed "OG" Bobby Johnson is being interrogated by the police, his fingerprints match the prints on the silencer and the gun he used to kill Genie Lamp. He takes the blame for everything and doesn't drop any names of the other members of the Deuce gang. Due to that he has to serve a decade in prison. There he finds from Loco, and old Deuce friend, that his own son was becoming a Deuce and that he was stealing stereos for Ray Ray, the leader of the Deuce gang. The rest of the movie is centered around Bobby trying to get his son out of the gang life and keeping him from making the same mistakes he d
