The Bret Easton Ellis novel American Psycho, a dark, violent satire of the "me" culture of Ronald Reagan's 1980s, is certainly one of the most controversial books of the '90s, and that notoriety fueled its bestseller status. This smart, savvy adaptation by Mary Harron (I Shot Andy Warhol) may be able to ride the crest of the notoriety; prior to the film's release, Harron fought a ratings battle (ironically, for depictions of sex rather than violence), but at the time the director stated, "We're rescuing [the book] from its own bad reputation." Harron and co-screenwriter Guinevere Turner (Go Fish) overcome many of the objections of Ellis's novel by keeping the most extreme violence offscreen (sometimes just barely), suggesting the reign of terror of yuppie killer Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) with splashes of blood and personal souvenirs. Bale is razor sharp as the blank corporate drone, a preening tiger in designer suits whose speaking voice is part salesman, part self-help guru, and completely artificial. Carrying himself with the poised confidence of a male model, he spends his days in a numbing world of status-symbol one-upmanship and soul-sapping small talk, but breaks out at night with smirking explosions of homicide, accomplished with the fastidious care of a hopeless obsessive. The film's approach to this mayhem is simultaneously shocking and discreet; even Bateman's outrageous naked charge with a chainsaw is most notable for the impossibly polished and gleaming instrument of death. Harron's film is a hilarious, cheerfully insidious hall of mirrors all pointed inward, slowly cracking as the portrait becomes increasingly grotesque and insane. --Sean Axmaker

This is my favorite movie of all time. Christian Bale drew me in when I first saw this movie. Every movie he is in, he always seems to be on top of his game. Sure some of his movie havent been all too great, yet he still puts on a hell of a show. I love the book as well, which is more explict then this. Its a great move.

2 out of 5 stars do you like phil collins?.......2007-06-13

I love this movie, I have since I rented about 5 years ago. I dont' really understand it, I guess I should read the book, but I think It's a really well done movie. Of course Bale is great, i love him as bateman and I also loved the period of the film. The special features on this edition are a different story. The version I already had only included one short featurette that was interesting, but short, and left me wanting more. So, naturally I thought I struck gold with the "uncut killers edition". Too bad most of the special features have NOTHING to do with the movie. A group of about 20 totally random people comment, one at a time, on new york in the eigthies for about an hour. I know that sounds weird, and it is, but its true. TOTALLY RANDOM people that had nothing to do with the movie (most of them). Honestly, I havent watched the movie yet, the special features were all I could handle at the time. There are 5 deleted scenes that add up to about 2 minutes, so this was barely worth it, only because I love this movie so much.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best!.......2007-06-10

This is Christian Bale at his best, his performance oozes class. Classic performance in a classic movie. I cannot recommend this movie highly enough. Buy it. Now I must return some videos...

This is one of my Top 5 all-time favorite movies. Also in my Top 5 are Fight Club and Very Bad Things...if that gives you any idea of what you're in store for.

Best when viewed after dinner, while sipping wine, about 11pm-ish, with a significant other.

    Description

Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) is a Wall Street yuppie, obsessed with success, status and style, with a stunning fiancee (Reese Witherspoon). He is also a psychotic killer who rapes, murders and dismembers both strangers and acquaintances without provocation or purpose. Based on the controversial novel, the film offers a sharp satire to the dark side of yuppie culture in the '80s, while setting forth a vision that is both terrifying and chilling.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome movie to begin with, and Blu-ray makes it so much better.......2007-06-12

This is a great film, but I'm not going to go into the writing, acting, or directing, here - I like to rate the quality of the video, audio and extras when it comes to Blu-ray, because I think that's what people want to know - they can get all that other info off of a movie rating site.

So how is the quality - in a word: FANTASTIC! The video quality is awesome, as only Blu-ray can provide, and the sound is captivating. I've heard people complaining about the transfer of this film and I disagree. The "washed out" or "grainy" look people are complaining about has nothing to do with the transfer - it's just how the movie is supposed to look. The washed out affect is there to reflect the mind of the killer, and how he sees things.

Another great bd to add to your collection. I highly recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars Hey Paul!!!.......2007-04-11

This has to be one of the best movies ever made. Christian Bale put on one of the greastest performances by actor that i have ever seen. He really deserved an oscar for the role. As far as the picture quality of the movie for blu-ray, I would have to say it is outstanding. One part in particular stands out, when Patrick Bateman Peels his facial mask off his face I think the picture jumps thru the screen. Its as though your looking right at him. Go Buy this movie and you won't be disapointed.

    5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Movie ~~~ * * * * * 5 Stars!.......2007-03-19

This movie has a wonderful soundtrack. Christian Bale is magnificent! His character is one that is inside everyone, and the ending has a great twist that I have found to leave some confused. I watched it twice before really understanding the ending. This is a movie you can watch over and over because of Christian Bale's character, Patrick, having such a weird sence of being, and very misunderstood sence of humor! I can not recommend this movie enough! The color is very brillant as well.

    2 out of 5 stars Great film, so-so Blu-ray.......2007-02-18

I'm a little ticked at LionsGate, I thought the shaky picture quality of the first wave of Blu-ray's was a thing of the past, now this. There is "ringing" and dirt in this transfer and I think given the limited number of Bluray titles out there, they ought to make a more concerted effort at keeping the quality higher than this. I guess I was expecting more, and reading the faint praise of the other two reviews, I see it's not just me.

4 out of 5 stars Video Quality Review (Blu-ray).......2007-02-07

In a word, theatre. A bit of dirt, a touch of grain, some obvious edge enhancement at times, even somewhat muted contrast but still nice if flat coloring, great flesh tones, and plenty of detail gives this blu-ray transfer a night at the local cinema feel. I didn't mind it. Not that this type of transfer should be encouraged but given the material I sort of liked the look. Reminded me of when I used to go out to see a movie. Truth be told the print used needs some cleanup and titles needing some cleanup should get it before going HD. My rating is a little generous but given the film's setting of the decadent 80s the weathered megaplex look, even if due to lack of care, worked rather well.

1 out of 5 stars This is the film that made Patrick Bateman snap........2007-04-05

A debate is raging between myself and a bank teller from across the street about the validity of watching sequels in either the sequential order of release date or in the way that they were semi-intended of viewing (i.e. the prequel to the "Exorcist" prior to the original version of the film ... and that sort of logic). I am a believer of watching the films as they are released, due to the possibility of missing an element that may be voiced or uncovered in future films, he feels differently due to true logic - meaning that there may be no continuity at all, so why put myself through the torture. An interesting thought, but one that I don't quite agree with due to the "American Psycho" theory. This argumentative other believes that you could watch "American Psycho 2" without seeing the original and consider it a viewable film, because you have to disassociate yourself from the original. I disagree for the exact reason that when you attach the title to another film, even if it has nothing to do with the original - you must associate the two. The two must match, gel, or even co-exist AND for me, it is an utter disgrace when the two just fight against each other. This is the battle known as "American Psycho II: All American Girl", and alas, I was caught in the trenches.

For those that are huge fans of the Christian Bale masterpiece should whole heartily avoid this film at all costs. There is nothing, I repeat, nothing connecting these two films together outside of a title and a slight beginning reference to a man that never should have existed in the first place - one elusive Patrick Bateman. From the beginning the story makes no sense, supposed serial killer Patrick Bateman kills again, leaving a small girl to finish what he started. From that point forward, she decides to do whatever it takes to kill/capture all the serial killers of the world - thus becoming one in the process. Again, what should have just been in Bateman's mind destroys the concept that this film is balanced on - so, all we are left with are views, images, goofy music, and acting that honestly came from a Cracker Jack box. Our lead this time is Mila Kunis, of "That 70s Show fame", jumping or should I say "bubbling" right out of her character on FOX to a nearly identical character for this film. Her goal for the film, become William Shatner's teaching assistant so that she can get into Quantico and thus fulfilling her dreams to capture serial killers. What actually happens in the film is that she kills everyone in her way (everyone else is oblivious to the pile of bodies) to get that respected position. Nobody is safe, and as we prepare for the ending, a twist so predictable is thrown our way that we could care less about her, the story, or the semi-terrifying ending. Our only hope is that they decide to end the series with this film. What could the story be next? Patrick Bateman's ghost returns for more non-existent killing?

From every angle of this film, I was disgraced. I was such an enormous fan of the original film (the insanity, the characters, the violence), that to be handed a stick of bubble gum after eating veal just felt insulting. There are those that actually enjoyed this film, which just boggles my mind. How could anyone, either a fan of the original or not, enjoy this cookie-cutter film? In the commentary, director Morgan J. Freeman even admits to being a "director-for-hire", which means the story was already in place all he needed to do was put that "direct-to-video" feel to it, and it was ready for packaging, sealing, and delivery to those unsuspecting viewers who were tied into just the title. Nothing worked in this film. The music took me away from the horrors that were happening, and made me feel that I was camping at a carnival. The selection made me want to shake my hips and chew some bubble gum (odd, this is transforming into a theme to this film). The cinematography was juvenile at best. Errors erupted with leaps and bounds, and again, during the commentary the director wasn't afraid to point them out. From these low points, the only place to go was further down with acting that somehow connected well to the carnival music. Shatner tried his best, but just couldn't pull off the womanizing teacher with connections to Quantico. The chemistry between him and the other ladies felt scripted and old. In just a short twenty days, one probably doesn't have the chance to get to know the rest of your cast, so just read your lines and pray for the best. For those wondering how Kunis did with this role, just listen to her in the commentary. Pathetic would be a good word, amateur would be another, and just to give you that third scoop, she was unbelievable at best. Freeman attempted to make her this convincing detail oriented killer, with a killer body, but the result was anything but scary - in fact - one could go so far to say that it was "killer funny". Can I say it one more time? Nothing in this film worked. I don't mean to be lacking detail, but from the initial scene it was obvious that we were on a downward path - did Morgan J. Freeman even see the original?

I have no sympathy for this film. "American Psycho II: All American Girl" was a debauchery to the series, to the words that Bret Easton Ellis put on the page, and to cinema itself. I have no respect for those that say that this should not be paired with the original, but instead should just be watched on its own. The original "American Psycho" was well acted, nail-bitingly genre bending, and continually asks me to question the value of a male dominated workplace on Wall Street. In the original, the question became what happens to a man that has everything - in the sequel, the question transforms into "What would a girl do to get everything?" The themes are even the same. This film is a prime example of Hollywood looking to capitalize on a cult film by merely selling the title. Oh, what a horrid experiment gone wrong.

If you wanted a cheap version of the original, I suggest this one. It contains no artistic value, no moral thought-provoking moments, and definitely nothing that could be called unique or creative. The word original was never in Morgan J. Freeman's dialog. Listen to the audio commentary if you don't believe me, these Freeman and Kunis give hope to the aspiring director (who doesn't mind selling out for a paycheck) as well as a disgraceful taste to the human race.

This was cheap - with a capital C.

    Grade: * out of *****

    2 out of 5 stars Train Wreck Of A Movie.... {2 Stars}.......2007-03-01

I can't really add much to the reviews. I mean, 76 reviews and a 2 star average. I think that speaks for itself. I only sat through this tripe because I think Mila Kunis is incredibly hot. Even that wasn't enough to keep me from trading it in for store credit. I gave it 2 stars for having Mila in it, but it's really a 1 star release.

    Avoid avoid avoid.

1 out of 5 stars Worse movie ever. Why did i bother ?.......2007-02-01

Patrick Bateman is dead, but his evil legacy continues with Rachael Newman (Mila Kunis), the only victim who managed to escape Bateman's grasp. Rachael will get rid of anyone who threatens her chances of becoming teaching assistant to the infamous Dr. Daniels, a professor and former FBI profiler. In a world where the stakes are higher and sex can kill, terror lurks in the new American Psycho.

Rather than trying to pick up where American Psycho left off, this sequel goes a different route by focusing on a whole new cast of characters. If you didn't already know, the first movie was based on the controversial book of the same name by author Bret Easton Ellis, who had no involvment what-so-ever in the making of this movie (he never wrote a sequel). Sadly, the movie is terrible, trite, and overall, a failure. Where the book (and, to a certain degree, the first movie) take a satirical view of the yuppie-laden 80s, this movie simply tries to be a violence-driven psycho-thriller, and loses all the ambience Ellis created for the original story. It's headlining star, Mila Kunis (better known for her role as Jackie in That 70s Show) does her best to deliver her role as a college student fascinated by serial killers, and determined to make her way into the FBI's training academy.

But her flat, un-emotional performance really only contributes to the movie's overall shortcomings, rather than attaining it's probable goal of setting her up as a student driven to succeed, even at the cost of becoming exactly what she intends to stop as a future FBI agent. This movie is a good waste of time, and may be worth renting if you really can't find anything else to watch. But be forwarned, fans of the original movie, and especially of Ellis' book will be especially dissapointed. There are certainly far worse movies from the same year than this, but that doesn't make this one any more capable of standing out. Sadly, Ellis' books simply don't translate well to film, they lose to much in the transer. But this flick goes a step beyond that by trying to make a sequel to an Ellis book, without actually having one of Ellis' writings to draw from
