Amazon.com
The Bachelor got critically slammed when it played in theaters, probably because reviewers couldn't help comparing it with the movie on which it's based, the brilliant Buster Keaton comedy Seven Chances. But on its own terms, The Bachelor is a modest and enjoyable picture about Jimmie (Chris O'Donnell), a happily single young man who suddenly gets an ultimatum from his grandfather's will: marry by his 30th birthday or lose an inheritance of $100 million. This is revealed the day before that very birthday. Unfortunately, Jimmie had already proposed to his girlfriend Anne (Renee Zellweger) and been turned down; she can see in his eyes that he isn't ready to get married and refuses to accept him until he is. So Jimmie needs to find a bride--fast. Though the commitment-shy man is a hoary cliché, The Bachelor successfully exaggerates Jimmie's fears to comic proportions. O'Donnell is his usual affable self, but it's Zellweger who seizes every scene she's in and makes something really enjoyable out it. The movie's greatest weakness is that she's such a small part of the second half. Still, there's good supporting performances from Hal Holbrook, Ed Asner, James Cromwell, and Marley Shelton (as Zellweger's sister), and Peter Ustinov and Brooke Shields both have very funny scenes. The Bachelor skirts some dangerously chauvinistic territory at times, but by and large it's a pleasant comedy with some genuine good humor. --Bret Fetzer

Literary adaptations just don't get any better than director Joe Wright's 2005 version of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. The key word here is adaptation, because Wright and gifted screenwriter Deborah Moggach have taken liberties with Austen's classic novel that purists may find objectionable, but in this exquisite film their artistic decisions are entirely justified and exceptionally well executed. It's a more rural England that we see here, circa 1790 (as opposed to Austen's early 19th century), in which Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) is one of several sisters primed for marriage, with an anxious mother (Brenda Blethyn) only too desperate to see her daughters paired off with the finest, richest husbands available. Elizabeth is strong-willed and opinionated, but her head (not to mention her pride and prejudice) lead her heart astray when she meets the wealthy Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), whose own sense of decency and discretion (not to mention his pride and prejudice) prevent him from expressing his mutual affection. They're clearly meant for each other, and as Knightley's performance lights up the screen (still young enough to be girlishly impertinent, yet wise beyond her 20 years), Austen's timeless romance yields yet another timeless adaptation, easily on par with the beloved BBC miniseries that has been embraced by millions since originally broadcast in 1995. Individual tastes will vary as to which version should be considered "definitive," but with a stellar supporting cast including Judi Dench and Donald Sutherland, this impeccable production achieves its own kind of perfection. --Jeff Shannon
Description
One of the greatest love stories of all time, Pride & Prejudice, comes to the screen in a glorious new adaptation starring Keira Knightley. When Elizabeth Bennett (Knightley) meets the handsome Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen), she believes he is the last man on earth she could ever marry. But as their lives become intertwined in an unexpected adventure, she finds herself captivated by the very person she swore to loathe for all eternity. Based on the beloved masterpiece by Jane Austen, it is the classic tale of love and misunderstanding that sparkles with romance, wit and emotional force. Critics are calling it "Exhilarating. A joy from start to finish" (Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times).

Are you kidding?!.......2007-06-30
Nothing that happens in this movie makes any sense. It's just a big f***ing ball of bulls***t. If you must watch it, I advise drinking heavily first.
p.s. I thought Conan O'Brien did pretty well as the autistic man who marries the hot blonde. WHOOPS, hope I didn't spoil any surprises.
p.p.s. The douche that Kiera K meets in the beginning? They get married too. SURPRISE!!!!!!!!
Skip the Movie; Read the Book!.......2007-06-29
I count "Pride and Prejudice" among my top-three favorite books...ever. So, I was really looking forward to this cinematic version of it. I was sorely disappointed. In all fairness, two hours just can't do justice to this wonderful novel, but this movie didn't even scratch the surface. And Keira Knightley as Lizzy? Didn't quite work for me. I say don't waste your money. The book is cheaper and will afford you greater hours upon hours of pleasure. I dare say, you'll want to read it again, which is more than I can say about viewing this film.
Even the purist likes it..........2007-06-28
Although I believed the A&E version could never be replaced in my heart due to its true-to-the-book writing, this is a wonderful sweetened condensed version and sparks a great romantic chord. Though I still adore the A&E version and would recommend it to anyone who's never read the book or is, like myself, a purist, this is a great little flick.
Will they get together?!.......2007-06-27
I love it! It doesn't go into as much detail as the first Pride and PrejudicePride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E, 1996) ,then again that was five hours long, and some of the best scences weren't even in the book but whats wrong with that. There are some fantastic scences, spectacular scenery, and Pride and Prejudice is one of the few movies where you are worried if they are really going to get together so it keeps you attention the entire time Knightly plays Elizabeth beautifully and Matthew Macfadyen is the perfect Mr. Darcy. Pride and Prejudice definitly didn't recieve the explosure it deserved.
A breathtaking tale to watch again and again.......2007-06-25
I have not read the book - so I am reviewing based solely on my enjoyment of the film for its own sake. It is a lovely, whimsical, romantic tale that can be enjoyed many times over. I appreciated the refreshing lack of profanity, crudity, and senseless violence that floods today's movies.
Beautiful scenary, well acted - thoroughly enjoyable. I highly recommend this!

This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story is well worth watching with the whole family. Produced for Canadian television, it's one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script. Set on bucolic Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century, Anne of Green Gables is the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong orphan. When brother and sister Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew work the farm, they are astonished when Anne arrives at the train station by mistake. "What use is she to us?" grumbles the gruff Marilla. "We might be of some use to her," answers Matthew, who has taken an instant liking to the talkative Anne. As Anne grows up, her adventures are both hilarious and moving. It's a delight to watch as she forms a friendship with the beautiful Diana and her admirer--the dashing Gilbert Blythe--then dyes her hair green, cracks a slate over Gilbert's head when he calls her "Carrots," and finds a sympathetic teacher who encourages her to attend college.
Richard Farnsworth is perfect as the shy and gentle bachelor Matthew, who confides to Anne that he never went courting because "I would have had to say something." Colleen Dewhurst delivers a nuanced and powerful performance as Marilla, a seemingly cold-hearted spinster whose no-nonsense exterior conceals a warm heart. And as Anne, Megan Follows strikes the perfect note, maturing from freckle-faced orphan to elegant and poised young woman. --Elisabeth Keating

a must for every girl, young or old...........2007-07-04
I'll tell ya, I don't think that there's a girl alive who can't find some way to relate to Anne Shirley. I recall watching this on WonderWorks as a little girl, and absolutely loved it (and the Anne of Avonlee episodes, which I don't yet own). At one point I had them all on VHS that we'd recorded, but I believe one of my sisters took them when they left home, and I only just got around to buying myself a copy on DVD. And I'm so glad I did, because now I'm sharing my love of this story with MY 9 year old daughter. How special it is to be able to share something one loved as a little girl, with a little girl of one's own, and each able to relate to the story.
If you have a daughter--she NEEDS this DVD!.......2007-06-13
I grew up watching this movie, and read all of L.M. Montgomery's books, and now as an adult I wonder, "What happened to stuff like Anne of Green Gables?" Kids these days, especially girls, don't seem to have any wholesome entertainment that doesn't focus on becoming rich and famous or having the perfect body. If you have a daughter, or a niece, or you yourself just want a nice wholesome movie for a change... buy this movie, you will not be disappointed!
Good movie.......2007-06-12
I watched this when I was little. Very nice, clean movie that keeps you very involved with the characters. Would recommend!
The Cutest of Movies.......2007-06-10
This movie is so wonderful I love the characters they picked to play each of the characters. This is the best movie out of the trilogy the sequel being the second best because both follow the book. This movie had all of my family in tears at certain points and Gilbert Blithe was a definite favorite for us. The scenery is breathtaking and the way the love story plays out is very cute. I would highly recommend this movie as it is a very enrapturing movie filled with the simple, beautiful things in life. And how Anne " with an E " touches the hearts of so many people is so beautiful. It made me want to move to Prince Edward Island tomorrow to live somewhere like Green Gables. Anne of Green Gables has become one of my favorite movies as it sings to the heart of the hopeless romantic.
Simply wonderful.......2007-06-07
This is one of the best adaptations I have ever seen. Sullivan does a great job of bring Avonlea to the screen and making smart choices about what needs to be changed while remaining true to the world Montgomery created.
The casting is perfect - major and minor characters alike are extremely talented. It's amazing to see how Megan Follows plays a 13 year old and a 16 year old, sometimes days apart, and is believable every time. Richard Farnesworth and Colleen Dewherst are magic.
The bonus features are also great - giving you the impression that getting this adaptation so perfect was more luck than craft on Sullivan's part (a perspective proven later when he destroys this "trilogy" with the joke that is The Continuing Story"), but provides an interesting commentary and details fans will really enjoy.
Everything about this film - the cast, the script, locations, costumes - works together. This is the Avonlea Anne fans have long loved.

Frank Capra made this film in 1941 before he went off to make films for America's war effort, but it wasn't released until 1944. Adapted from the hit play by Joseph Kesselring, this frantic black comedy shows Capra at his best as a master of mood and timing. Actresses Josephine Hull and Jean Adair reprise their Broadway performances as two gentle old ladies who poison men with elderberry wine to put them out of their misery. Cary Grant plays one nephew, a normal guy who just gets wind of their little hobby and tries to get them to stop, while Raymond Massey plays another, a villain just escaped from jail. Capra encourages the cast, especially Grant, to give a somewhat more outsized performance than one might expect. But made during the war years as it was, this overstated comic approach to killing was probably cathartic. --Tom Keogh
Description
You'll die laughing! Frank Capra directs Cary Grant, Raymond Massey, Peter Lorre and stellar cast in the hit Broadway farce about a nutcase family with well-intentioned homicidal tendencies.

Arsnic & Old Lace.......2007-06-27
A Classic screwball comedy with Cary Grant at his best. Also starring Josephine Hull who reprises her Broadway role in a 5 star performance. Black and white movies do not get any better than this. A must see for all fans.
Hilarious Dark Comedy.......2007-05-15
Arsenic and Old Lace, will appeal to children and adults alike. It is the classic Halloween movie. Poor, Mortimer Brewster(Cary Grant) is mixed up with his crazy relatives who have a penchant for murder. Murder done in a benevolant way. The acting is superb and laugh follows laugh in this happy dark comedy. This will appeal to those of you who have wacky relatives or those of you who are the wacky relatives. That's why it is good for both adults and kids.

Similar to the equally excellent Valmont, this version of Jane Austen's classic novel had the misfortune of following a sumptuous big-star version with Gwyneth Paltrow, which was released the summer before. And, just as 1989's Valmont suffered comparisons with Dangerous Liaisons, inevitably these Emmas were held up next to one another.
This delicious Emma concerns a young woman of financial substance (Kate Beckinsale), who fancies herself a matchmaker, especially with shy Miss Harriet Smith (Samantha Morton, who also appears in A&E's Jane Eyre). In Emma's swirling world of social activity and social consciousness, one's position and stature is a constant preoccupation. But to her credit, Emma, albeit a busybody, has compassion for all classes, and for her kindly but hypochondriacal father (Bernard Hepton).
This miniseries is more subtle than the grand theatrical release, is truer to the novel, and gives a richer explanation of the relationship between Emma associates Jane Fairfax (beautiful Olivia Williams of Rushmore) and the duplicitous Frank Churchill (Raymond Coulthard). Of course, at the center, as in all Austen stories, is the romance between the unsuspecting leading lady and an unlikely, but wholly suitable gentleman. In this case, it's Emma and her brother-in-law, the righteous (as played here) Mr. Knightley (Mark Strong). Strong's Mr. Knightley is more reserved, less coy than Jeremy Northam's; he plays Knightley more like Mr. Darcy (the leading man in Austen's Pride and Prejudice, which A&E also offers in a wonderful miniseries). Beckinsale proves to be utterly delightful and in no way should this excellent adaptation be ignored. --N.F. Mendoza

Wonderful Version.......2007-06-19
This is my favorite of the Emma movies. Emma, though meddlesome, is so endearing and forgiveable in this version. I think A&E in general does a great job of adapting beloved novels to the small screen. They have also done well with the Hercule Poirot mysteries. In the same way they treated Agatha Christie's words with care, they have done the same for Jane Austen. The supporting characters are all well-done in this movie too. The scenery and costuming is colorful and superb. I am pleased I purchased this, and I am not at all disappointed in the way this story has been presented. This is a terrific version of a great novel.

This was a watch over and over friendly adaptation of Emma and captured the book very, very well!! In fact, my whole family found it witty, sweet, well adapted. It is colorful and fulfilling. I will be sure to put it next to my favorite Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, and watch it again often.
A good Emma adaptation.......2007-05-24
This is relatively true to the book, much moreso than the Paltrow version. However, like the book, it may be a bit heavy for some viewers. They won't, for example, see Mr. Knightley as a romantic hero. The acting is good, and the story is great. It's a wonderful way to introduce someone to this work, by Ms. Austen, and would be wonderfully paired with something like Clueless, so that one can see how the story transcends time.

j. austen lover.......2007-05-18
I was very impressed with this BBC version of the Jane Austen classic. The movie arrived in excellent condition and I was very happy with the price as well. I intend on ordering more movies from Amazon in the future.
Keeps getting better with each viewing!.......2007-04-05
I have watched three adaptations of Emma: the 1972 BBC adaptation, the 1996 Hollywood version, and the 1997 A&E production. Of the three, the 1997 adaptation starring Kate Beckinsale in the title role is my favorite of all time. Kate Beckinsale's Emma is vivacious, witty, and charmingly infuriating all at the same time. As the main character she breathes life into Jane Austen's most lovable heroine. The 1972 BBC version had Goran Godwin play Emma Woodhouse, and though it was the most faithful adaptation of Ms Austen's work, the title character appeared too old to play Emma, lacked the vibrancy that was Emma Woodhouse, and appeared cold at times. The 1996 version with Gwyneth Paltrow, although not fully faithful to the novel [due to time constraints] had a fairly lovable Emma [though Gwyneth's attempts at an English accent left much to be desired]...the Hollywood version was entertaining though as it had a stellar cast in Jeremy Northam as the dashing Mr Knightley, Alan Cumming as the loathsome vicar, and even Ewan McGregor...BUT, my favorite version is still this 1997 A&E adaptation as Kate Beckinsale[a true English rose] truly plays Emma Woodhouse to perfection!

Will Smith's easygoing charm makes Hitch the kind of pleasant, uplifting romantic comedy that you could recommend to almost anyone--especially if there's romance in the air. As suave Manhattan dating consultant Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, Smith plays up the smoother, sophisticated side of his established screen persona as he mentors a pudgy accountant (Kevin James) on the lessons of love. The joke, of course, is that Hitch's own love life is a mess, and as he coaches James toward romance with a rich, powerful, and seemingly inaccessible beauty named Allegra (Amber Valetta), he's trying too hard to impress a savvy gossip columnist (Eva Mendes) with whom he's fallen in love. Through mistaken identities and mismatched couples, director Andy Tennant brings the same light touch that made Drew Barrymore's Ever After so effortlessly engaging. As romantic comedies go, Hitch doesn't offer any big surprises, but as a date movie it gets the job done with amiable ease and style. --Jeff Shannon

The Cure for the Common Man..........2007-06-28
Typically when I'm choosing a movie to watch in my spare time, I will choose from action, drama, comedy, sci-fi, thrillers, etc. (what you would basically expect from any guy), I can honestly say that I very rarely choose a romantic comedy, and never a musical. However, sometimes a romantic comedy comes along that looks interesting and funny to me, generally because the premise is different from most or because I like the stars in it, or simply because my wife chooses the movie for our movie night. In the case of "Hitch" it was a combination of the first 2 factors, but for some reason my wife and I never got around to watching this movie in theaters, and for the longest time on DVD. But recently, we sat down and watched it, and I must say that even though many critics and some moviegoers weren't entertained that much by the movie, I found it to be highly enjoyable and one of the better romantic comedies I had seen.
"Hitch" is the story of Alex 'Hitch' Hitchens (Will Smith), a man whose job is to find ways for a man to successfully woo the woman of his choice into a successful dating relationship. Hitch is a man that is good at his job, but never really finds the time for his own dating life. When Hitch begins coaching a pudgy accountant (Kevin James) on how to get noticed by an attractive, wealthy heiress, his own love life begins to blossom, but through a series of mishaps starts to go horribly awry. Inevitably leaving Hitch wondering why he can make love happen for complete strangers but never for himself. But before he can figure out what's going on in his life, a newsreporter (Eva Mendes) is trying to uncover the true identity of this so-called 'Date Doctor', and after protecting his identity for so long Hitch finds himself in the media crosshairs, and the real kicker is, it's his new girlfriend that put him there.
As far as romantic comedies go, most of them are generally predictable to some extent, sometimes the predictability of these types of films lends to boredom for me. However, there are a few romantic comedies that manage to be predictable, yet still entertain, and then there are the few (very few) that just surprise you by not being all that predictable. "Hitch" falls somewhere between somewhat predictable and not all that much, there are the typical romantic comedy elements that are crucial for this type of film. For example, guy finds girl, impresses girl, things get serious, some secret about guy is discovered by girl, girl breaks up with guy, guy proclaims love for girl, and all is well with the world - those are your basic elements (give or take one or two) to almost every romantic comedy these days, and "Hitch" contains several of them. The difference for me was that unlike a lot of other romantic comedies where the story is so thin and the humor is virtually non-existent that you find yourself already knowing how the movie will end and checking your eyelids for holes within the first 30 minutes due to boredom, "Hitch" keeps things going at a very steady pace with plenty of laughs and clever dialogue that I never got distracted by getting ahead of the story, and remained entertained throughout. Probably the element I enjoyed the most of the movie was the way the character of Hitch had taken a by-the-book approach to dating, as far as his tips go, that worked like a charm for every guy that he tutored, yet could never get the same approach to work for him, and in the end he discovers that love, much like life, isn't always so simply figured out.
The performances by the cast were uniformly strong, Will Smith and Kevin James out-shined everyone, which wasn't really all that surprising given their comedic and acting talents. Eva Mendes was very endearing as the woman that Hitch is trying to start a relationship with, and she shows a great on-screen chemistry with Will Smith that made their couple very believable. The story as I said earlier contained many of the familiar elements of most romantic comedies, yet still entertained me, and I never felt like I'd seen it all before. The ending is what you expect, and of course hope for in this type of movie, but the execution of the ending was done in a very interesting and unique way that I didn't expect, probably making it a much more enjoyable ending than most.
With all of that being said, "Hitch" isn't the most original romantic comedy, but there are numerous elements that are unique, and allowed me to overlook the same old elements that are so tried and true to this genre. It was a very entertaining movie, that provides you plenty of laughter and leaves you feeling good, which is what these movies should do.
"Hitch" is rated PG-13 for language and sensuality.
Will, Kevin, and New York, New York.......2007-06-27
Every role is perfectly cast in this romantic comedy/buddy movie. Kevin James and Will Smith are funny, but never over-the-top in roles that could have gone silly with less capable actors.
The movie is also a love affair with Manhattan. Every scene takes place in one distinctly New York spot after another. I loved each one.
By the way, the soundtrack for Hitch is great, too.
Funny, refreshing and oh so much fun, exactly what I've been waiting for..........2007-06-26
While `Hitch' may not be the most original romantic comedy to hit the big screen it's one of the most enjoyable. Will Smith is always entertaining and effortlessly captivating, but this time, with the pairing of the breathtaking beauty known as Eva Mendes and the hilarious Kevin James, Smith is brought to the top of his game. The script is sweet and refreshing, the dialog is smart and funny and the acting is top notch. Eva Mendes is not only beautiful but charming and funny. She keeps proving with each role no matter how thankless that she is more than a pretty face. This role is not thankless, thankfully, but just the same she's a star. The real standout though is Kevin James who outdoes himself. I've always loved James' standup and his show `The King of Queens' but here he really blows me away with his natural charm and humor.
Smith plays Alex `Hitch' Hitchens, a date doctor as it were, who helps coach men into successful relationships. His latest project is Albert, an overweight accountant who has fallen for the rich and beautiful Allegra Cole, a woman many may consider out of his league. With Hitch's help Albert begins to woo Allegra and a mutual attraction between the two is formed. In the meantime Hitch himself finds he's been struck by cupids arrow, falling for columnist Sara Meles, and soon we discover that Hitch is about as helpless as the men he coaches. Between the two couples hilarity ensues and the audience is never left bored or wanting.
As may well be expected events line themselves up to expose Hitch and his clientele and threaten to end both sets of blossoming relationships. All is good though and the ride is a fun and entertaining one. The chemistry between the entire cast is fantastic. James feeds Albert enough charm and tenderheartedness that the audience falls in love with him alongside Allegra and Mendes plays Sara with enough sass and smarts that we can easily understand why Hitch is so absorbed in her. Smith may be the star but with a cast this impressive he gladly shares the spotlight and the praise with his co-stars. It's fun and breezy entertainment suitable for the entire family and will go down as one of my favorite romantic comedies of late.
great date movie.......2007-05-18
This is the kind of movie you could cuddle up and watch with a 1st, 2nd or 3rd date (especially a 3rd). Will Smith has made a great comical come-back!
Almost perfect.......2007-05-11
When I first saw the trailer for "Hitch" back in 2004, I couldn't wait to see this movie, because this role seemed tailor made for Will Smith, and it definitely was. Smith as dating consultant Alex Hitchens (aka "Hitch") is very much like the real Will Smith - tall, dark, handsome, suave, outgoing and humorous. This is quite a change of pace for him since Will is such a huge star of some of Hollywood's biggest action blockbusters ("Men In Black", "Independence Day", "Bad Boys", "I, Robot", "Enemy of the State"); romantic comedy isn't something he's done but he is a natural in this role. He's a coach for men looking for serious relationships but have no clue as to how to win over the women of their dreams. He's good at what he does. He is able to parlay his skills into a very lucrative yet inconspicuous career for himself.
Enter Kevin James (TV's "King of Queens") as Albert Brennaman - a bumbling, asthmatic accountant who is everything that Hitch is not. He is secretly in love with a rich heiress/socialite, Allegra Cole (Amber Valletta, "What Lies Beneath", "Premonition"). Albert's company oversees her financial and business interests. But because Albert lacks confidence in himself, and is clumsy, overweight and shy, he thinks he has absolutely no chance in hell of getting with this woman. However, there is a quiet charm and sensitivity about Albert that you can't help but find to be appealing - like a big teddy bear that you just want to hug! He enlists the services of Hitch, who is called "The Date Doctor", and that's when the fun begins. Hitch teaches him the right things to say, the right things to do, and little by little, the formally inattainable Ms. Cole becomes closer to being attainable to Albert. I thought the scenes between Will and Kevin were hilarious, and they have great on-screen chemistry. Hope to see them paired up in something again in the future.
However, Hitch's romantic life doesn't quite flow with the same ease that his clients have. Eva Mendes ("Training Day", "Out Of Time", "Ghost Rider") plays Sara Melas, a gossip columnist who takes her job a bit too seriously and the object of his affection, but nearly everytime they go out he does something wrong, or something embarrassing happens. I like Eva Mendes as an actress, but I found her character of Sara to be obnoxious at times and other than her being attractive, I couldn't understand what Hitch saw in her. I enjoyed her scenes with Hitch when she let her guard down, but otherwise, she rubbed me the wrong way with her self-righteous and shrewish attitude.
I really enjoyed this movie up until three-quarters of the way - then the behavior of certain people started to annoy me with an incident that really wasn't that big a deal, and then blown so far out of proportion that all of the main characters ended up unhappy. For that reason, I had to dock it one star. However, "Hitch" DOES conclude with a happy ending so it wasn't all that unpredictable. It has its flaws, but it is definitely worth watching, and one of the better romantic comedies that have been released in the past few years.
Sidenote: There are some interesting extras on the DVD, such as deleted scenes, which I'm glad they didn't include in the final edit because it would have made the film too long (like what was done with the unrated version of "The 40 Year Old Virgin" DVD). In this case, less was definitely more. :-)

Blake Edwards's delightful 1959 comedy stars Cary Grant as a World War II submarine captain whose preference for a by-the-book command reluctantly yields to certain realities. Chief among those is that Grant's first officer (Tony Curtis, who impersonated Grant that same year in Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot), a shameless hustler, is better than the navy at delivering whatever supplies the ship and crew need to keep going. But when Curtis sneaks a handful of Philippine refugees and several gorgeous nurses onto the all-male sub, the skipper not only has to cool down his crew but deal with an unexpected feminine influence on ship protocol. The film is a great deal of fun, sprinkled with the director's trademark sight gags (including one of Edwards's best, involving a torpedo and jeep), and graced with his unmistakable lilt. Grant is in great form, his comic brilliance almost impossibly effortless. --Tom Keogh

Ranks right up there with "Father Goose" as one of Cary Grant's funniest movies. Great family fun.
A Movie for All........2007-05-14
This is one of my favorite oldie's. I had pretty much worn my VHS out and needed another one, so the DVD had to be the new choice. Always loved Gary Grant. It's a good clean movie and very enjoyable. The type of movie I can let the grandchildren watch with no worries. I don't like most of the movies that are made today, so I still stick the good older ones. There are sooooo many laughs in this movie and yes, most of the time I watch it by myself. If you are havin or had a bad day, this movie will lift you spirit. Buy it, you wont be sorry.
Operation Petticoat.......2007-05-14
I love this movie. I like most of Cary Grant's movies. This movie is very funny and entertaining. Why can't the film industry make good movies like this anymore?
Judy.......2007-04-10
Tony Randall and Cary Grant are excellent in this flick !! This is one of my favorite movies, even if it is an "oldie". I have seen it 20 times and still laugh.

Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. --Bret Fetzer

A Directorial Failure.......2007-07-01
Steve Carell can be a good actor, witness his performance in Little Miss Sunshine and he receives some great support here from Catherine Keener and Romany Malco, but somehow it just doesn't work. The idea behind the film is tenuous, and is made even more so by modeling the hero on Pee Wee Herman (grown man rides bicycle, collects action figures). Carell simply comes across as being silly.
There are some uproariously funny scenes, which justify the time worth watching the film, but like a Chinese dinner, you'll feel empty an hour later.
Funny!.......2007-06-27
This is a good laugh of a movie. You have to see it. I've watched it like a lot. You have to have a gr8 sense of humor and sillyness. Don't take it personally if you relate to the main guy. He is hilarious....
Horrible piece of you know what.......2007-06-17
Terrible terrible movie. Not funny in the least. I heard so much buzz about how this was the funniest thing ever so I made the mistake of watching this on TV. My God what a horrible movie. Not funny at all. I guess people now a days have no idea what a good comedy is.
R-rated Widescreen...Finally Available.......2007-06-15
"The 40-Year-Old Virgin" is finally available in all of its R-rated glory in widescreen format! (The original unrated DVD and R-rated full screen versions were released in December 2005, while the new R-rated widescreen wasn't available until January 2006.)
For those unfamiliar with the unrated version, it was the exclusive widescreen version available up until now, and included 17 additional minutes of "outrageous" deleted scenes that were left on the cutting room floor for good reason. The R-rated version is a comedic gem, and has finally gotten its due with this widescreen DVD release.

Problems with color transfer to DVD version.......2007-04-29
Many previous reviewers have praised this film, in particular the VHS version. I am in their camp, but having recently purchased the DVD version, due to a cassette accident, I have to say that the DVD version is a poor substitute. The DVD release is awash in a red tint, and many scenes are simply too dark to view. Such a pity, as I originally found the cinematography in this film spectacular.
Yay.......2007-03-10
So, i love this version of Twelfth Night - it's the best one out there! The product arrived after a couple of weeks, which was kind of a pain because i needed it for school, but it worked out. The DVD was in good condition and has good picture, no problems, and will last longer than the VHS.
damn yank.......2007-03-09
This could have been a 5 star movie because it is hard for me to follow the dialect without subtitles though the acting by the cast was what made up for this. The cinematography is great and was sentimental seeing the coast of Cornwall. I saw this movie primarily cause of Imogen Stubbs playing the part of a tomboy as being plausable because of a boyish figure like Hilary Swank, who is a hotty too. I found Imogen attractive in other roles and was curious as to how i would see her. Well it was amusing to watch the scenes where her cover could have been revealed whether or not she was fooling anyone i could not care cause she still looked fine as a woman to me. One particular time was when an instructor was correcting her posture during fencing training at the military academy. Later I enjoyed her swordsmanship in a duel that was surprisingly aggressive so that you would not mind having her around alot enjoying life. There is a relationship between twins that is very poinyant during the beginning and at the end of the film that Imogen had part into that is worth noting.
Ooh, so hot but you're breakin' my heart!.......2007-02-19
"Twelfth Night" may be one of Shakespeare's lesser known plays but this production really hit it with my entire family - even my two sons, ages 15 and 11, loved it! The trailer/teaser for the movie played up the gender-bender aspects of the plot but don't be misled - there's nothing gay about this movie. "Twelfth Night" is all about mistaken identity, wistful and fruitless love, and runaway egos. All's well that ends well, and all does. Ben Kingsley as Feste is my favorite character, and his song at the movie's close really wraps things up well. He, Helena Bonham-Carter, and Nigel Hawthorne are the best known members of what proved to be a very good cast. So, why not 5 stars??? I am profoundly deaf. The first time I saw this movie, it was on VHS with poor-to-average closed captioning. I so looked forward to seeing it on DVD. The DVD version that I purchased is NOT CLOSED CAPTIONED! What's with that! Just copy the text from Shakespeare's play and add it to the DVD! I simply cannot believe that this is happening in the 21st Century. I now HATE this product and feel quite slighted by the people responsible for making it available to the public.

As upscale sitcoms go, Something's Gotta Give has more to offer than most romantic comedies. Obviously working through some semi-autobiographical issues regarding "women of a certain age," writer-director Nancy Meyers brings adequate credibility and above-average intelligence to what is essentially (but not exclusively) a fantasy premise, in which an aging lothario who's always dated younger women (Jack Nicholson, more or less playing himself) falls for a successful middle-aged playwright (Diane Keaton) who's convinced she's past the age of romance, much less sexual re-awakening. As long as old pals Nicholson and Keaton are on screen discussing their dilemma or discovering their mutual desire, Something's Gotta Give is terrific, proving (in case anyone had forgotten) that Hollywood can and should aim for an older demographic. Myers falls short with the sitcom device of a younger lover (Keanu Reeves) who wants Keaton as much as Nicholson does; it's believable but shallow and too easily dismissed. Myers also skimps on supporting roles for Frances McDormand, Amanda Peet, and Jon Favreau, but thankfully this is one romantic comedy that doesn't pander to youth. Mature viewers, rejoice! --Jeff Shannon

Some ONE's got to give...........2007-06-29
And the "someones" are Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton, who give wonderfully sweet and sassy performances in this story about Destiny almost thwarted.
Jack plays a quitessential playboy. It seems he has a new girlfriend every week. Only this time perhaps he's found "the one" in Amanda Peet. Enter Diane Keaton, Peet's mother. A successful playwrite, she is hardly looking for romance. Comfortable in her static, routine existence, surrounded by her characters, living her life vicariously through them at times, Keaton seems blissfully unaware of her own appeal. (Typical to any Keaton character, which is likely part of her basic charm.)
Keaton and Nicholson have a battle of wits, a battle of charms and an ultimate battle of hearts (notwithstanding Nicholson's heart attack about mid movie.)
In the closing minutes, the question is looming... will they or won't they? And I won't spoil it... you'll have to watch it to find out.
but I will say this... the movie is satisfying in its conclusion and is remarkable throughout. I LOVED it!
Something's Gotta Give.......2007-06-08
This is a very humerous yet touching romantic comedy, atleast for the 50+ crowd - maybe not for the younger generation.
my opinion of this movie.......2007-06-01
I found it to be a great movie and in perfect condition. I think most people over 30 would enjoy it. I had about everything and two great actors.
Don't underestimate this movie! :- ).......2007-04-05
This fun, silly movie would be a great date movie. 2 icons of the Baby Boom generation visiting all the relationship stereotypes we've grown up with over the years - and finding each other.
I could have lived without Jack Nicholson's naked butt, but hey, the more things change ... the more they stay the same. What can you say about Nicholson? He's fresh, fun, charming, warm and heart-rending in the role of the over-the-hill playboy who finally falls in love. Keaton is adorable, as always, and I could fall in love with her myself.
Keanu Reeves is the proverbial heart-throb, but it is true that being with someone younger than you doesn't make you feel young - it makes you feel old. There's something to be said for sticking with your own cohort. There's more to relate to.
I loved this movie. It was a delightful change of pace, charming, fun and sweet.Little Buddha
My Favorite!.......2007-04-02
All I have to say, is that this is my favorite Keaton movie and my favorite romantic comedy! I love her in Reds, Annie Hall and Mrs. Soffel, but for me, this was her best performnace (so far)...Nancy Meyers is a great director and who doesn't like Nicholson. Warning guys, it is a chick-flick, but a great date movie!

With Sideways, Paul Giamatti (American Splendor, Storytelling) has become an unlikely but engaging romantic lead. Struggling novelist and wine connoisseur Miles (Giamatti) takes his best friend Jack (Thomas Haden Church, Wings) on a wine-tasting tour of California vineyards for a kind of extended bachelor party. Almost immediately, Jack's insatiable need to sow some wild oats before his marriage leads them into double-dates with a rambunctious wine pourer (Sandra Oh, Under the Tuscan Sun) and a recently divorced waitress (Virginia Madsen, The Hot Spot)--and Miles discovers a little hope that he hasn't let himself feel in a long time. Sideways is a modest but finely tuned film; with gentle compassion, it explores the failures, struggles, and lowered expectations of mid-life. Giamatti makes regret and self-loathing sympathetic, almost sweet. From the director of Election and About Schmidt. --Bret Fetzer
Description
ACADEMY AWARD WINNER BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY WINNER OF 2 GOLDEN GLOBES, INCLUDING BEST PICTURE (COMEDY / MUSICAL)
In this intoxicating, intelligent comedy, director Alexander Payne (Election, About Schmidt) serves up "one of the best movies of the year" (Entertainment Weekly) about the ups, downs and sideways journeys of life. A wine-tasting road trip through California's famed Central Coast takes an unexpected detour as Miles (Paul Giamatti) and Jack (Thomas Haden Church) hit the gas en route to their mid-life crisis. The comically mismatched pair soon find themselves drowning in wine, women... and laughter!

Please go away..........2007-07-03
First of all, this was the best movie of 2005. Secondly, if you rated this film at one star you have no taste in good movies. Thirdly, as one of the better scripts out there, the writing was amazing. I think way too many people did not understand the richness that the actors created...I felt like an observer into real life...this film was beautifully done and I think that a film like this comes out once every few years that is highly underrated and happens to be a masterpiece...Go review Triple xXx again if you cannot properly fathom quality greatness when it's right in front of your face. Oh how the masses line up like sheep to the slaughter... "Please sir can I have some more?"
Zero stars - what an unfunny boring over-rated whiney dog.......2007-06-24
I was suckered into watching part of this crappy loser downer dog - what a waste of time. I like wine and being 73 and lived in Nor Cal for 45 years - I've tasted, drunk, tossed out - way more than my share of CA and global wines. When I find a keeper I buy 10-12 cases. This is not a keeper.
Too Depressing for me!.......2007-06-15
I like to give multiple stars to movies I would watch again. The other day I thought about watching "Sideways" for a second time, and I thought to myself, "..no, its too depressing!" I'll get to why in a minute.
The acting was excellent. I don't see the genius that others find in Paul Giamatti, except as perhaps, a modern Woody Allen, the world's greatest "sad sack." But Giamatti doesn't have Woody's comedy genius - so I'll have to revise what I just said - Paul Giamatti is the world's greatest sad sack. Tom Church played a man with absolutley no redeeming characteristics, except perhaps that he has befriended the worlds greatest sad sack.
I thought Virginia Madsen was very good until the scene where she describes her romantic interest in wine. Then, like other reviewers, I thought she was amazing. In this movie, I think wine is a metahpor for what can be cheap, pompous and superficial. Wine experts are usually just trying to impress other people with cheap, self-serving superficiality. But then "Maya" gives us an honest and genuine assessment, reminding us that there is decency and honesty, even in the world of wine.
"Sideways" very effectively portrayed lives that seemed to be going nowhere but sideways. And this is the reason, despite all the funny things that happen in this movie, why I think its sad. The character development in "Sideways" is excellent. As I got to know the characters, I began to emphathize with them, so I began to feel bad about the miserable lives they are leading. Worst of all, was life so miserable for Madsen's magnificent "Maya" character that she would find comfort in Giamatti's miserable "Miles" character? Ouch. And the young woman who actually believed everything she heard from the Tom Church character. Oh well. (pun intended). Basically, these to guys are complete losers. But because I felt I knew them, I cared for them, and thus, in between the humor, it was painful to watch.
One day, I may watch it again for the humor, which had its momements, like when giamatti takes the monster hit from the dregs bucket, or Tom Church walking around with the bandage on his nose (which seemed to advertise, I am a loser, a complete loser), or the two people having sex while Giamatti re-steals Church's wallet. But I'll wait a while.
One star for Virginia Madsen's acting, one star for Giamatti's dance with the dregs bucket, one star for Church's nose bandage, and another star for Virginia Madsen's face.
Good, but not the best.......2007-06-08
this movie was kinda good, but it wasn't the best movie i saw. i thought that thomas haden church was funny in this movie. but thats about it.
Two words...MEAN OSTRICHES!.......2007-06-01
Very funny, Very SMART, a human frailty revealing movie with all too easy to relate to characters...did I mention SMART?!
I totally cracked up *WITH* Miles at Jack's sans-clothing, cross-country in the wee-hours-of-the-morning, hike. And for those who would judge Miles and Jack too harshly, you ain't all that either, baby. ;)
