The premise of Love Potion #9--that a magic potion makes the user irresistible to the opposite sex--could be the setup for the crassest sex farce imaginable. Instead, this film is a surprisingly subtle romantic comedy. Nebbishy scientist Paul (Tate Donovan) goes to a Gypsy fortuneteller (Anne Bancroft), who tells him she sees no women in his entire life. To make up for this depressing news, she gives him a few drops of a love potion--number 8. Paul, a biochemist, scoffs; but when his pet cat accidentally gets a taste and attracts every female cat in the neighborhood, he enlists fellow dweeby scientist Diane (Sandra Bullock) to analyze it. After experimenting on monkeys, they decide to test it on themselves; soon Diane is being pursued by handsome Italians in the street and comes close to marrying the Prince of England, while Paul gets a little revenge on a woman who previously rejected him, then embarks on his own love spree. Shortly they discover that they really want each other; but before they can get married, an old boyfriend of Diane returns with his own dose of love potion number 8. Paul's only hope is to get something even more powerful. Love Potion #9 is genuinely clever and sweet, and both Donovan and Bullock work well with the low-key but effective humor of the movie's well-written script. It's a tribute to her talent and her girl-next-door looks that Bullock, unlike most pretty stars dressing down, is effective as both a lovelorn loser and the confident glamour-girl she becomes. Altogether, a charming and enjoyable film. --Bret Fetzer
Description
In this charming romantic comedy, a brilliant but lonely biochemist (Tate Donovan) gets a mysterious potion from a gypsy who guarantees it will turn his life around. After showing it to his co-worker (Sandra Bullock), a shy animal psychobiologist, they achieve amazing amorous results in a chimpanzee experiment. Now the only way to see if it works on humans is to test it on themselves.

Actor Griffin Dunne improves a bit on his first film as a director, Addicted to Love, with this drama-comedy about a family of witches. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock play spell-casting sisters of different temperaments: the former is a high-living, free-spirited sort, while Bullock's character is a homebody who can't get around a family curse that kills the men in their lives. A widowed single mom, Bullock gets into a jam with an abusive Bulgarian (Goran Visnjic) and is helped out by her sibling, but the result brings a good-looking, warm, inquisitive cop (Aidan Quinn) into their lives. The film has a variety of tonal changes--cute, scary, glum--that Dunne can't always effectively juggle. But the female-centric, celebratory nature of the film (the fantasies, the sharing, the witchy bonds) is infectious, and supporting roles by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing as Kidman and Bullock's magical aunts are a lot of fun. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Shows the Positive Aspects of The Craft.......2007-07-03

Practical Magic is an underrated neo-classic, and should be in every witch's movie collection. With strong female characters like Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Aunt Frances (Stockard Channing), to name a few, it shows positive aspects of The Craft, especially when Sally tells Gary Hallet (Aidan Quinn) that "there is no devil in the craft." Although the magic in the movie is pure Hollywood (except for the herb gardens and celebrations, of course), it is definitely the best portrayal of witches out there in Tinseltown. It is one of my favorite movies ever, and I'm sure it'll become a classic for you, too.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite witchey movie.......2007-06-21

This is my very favorite classic movie on witchcraft. I feel that it puts a positive spin on wicca (although it has been glamorized and fictional). I love that the romantic aspect is not overly done and mushy, and that the spiritual side is not over done to the point of scaring the children.

4 out of 5 stars my family' s weider than your's.......2007-05-17

An old favorite, with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as members of a witchy family cursed in affairs of the heart. Bullock, as a non-willing practioner of the arts, gets pulled into a dark act striving to save her sister (Kidman) from her evil boyfriend (ER"s Gorin Vasnjic). Throw in some comic relief from their 2 aunts (Stockard Channing and Diane Wiest)and you have an irresistable chick flick. Something good for a girl's night in. Put the lime in the coconut for a midnight margherita.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Magic Review.......2007-05-14

The ultimate feel-good-about-being-a-woman chick-flick about three generations of women with magical powers. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are two beautiful sisters with flowing hair who are bound by a dark secret. Consumed by the intoxicating power of love, they call upon the power of womanhood to set them free.

5 out of 5 stars Magical!.......2007-05-10

Practical Magic is all about two witches with a curse put on them :whenever they love a man that man will die.

I found it a bit scary at some places but the idea is so clever.the two girls are best friends (or sisters,i cant remember) one of them is very serious and the other isnt, she finds herself a boyfriend that keeps hitting her and so they accidently "kill him" or so they think.i wont ruin the story but it is absoloutly excellent,a genius thought of thr story.
Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock have never been better.

Imagine a work by Shakespeare reduced to one of those pretty, glossy coffee-table picture books that have only a dollop of text alongside its sumptuous photographs, and you might have Michael Hoffman's adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream. This all-star version of Shakespeare's comedy is gorgeously shot in Tuscany, complete with a magical forest, breathtaking landscapes, beautiful villas, picturesque villages, stunning period costumes--oh wait, there's supposed to be a story here, too! Hoffman hijacks Shakespeare's basic premise but doesn't instill it with much more than surface shine and transplants it to turn-of-the-century Italy. Ergo, it's left up to the actors to find the heart and soul of this classic play, in which the fairies of the forest play mix and match with four young lovers, courtesy of a magical love potion. Hoffman couldn't ask for better (or better looking) actors to play Shakespeare's dreamlike love games--Michelle Pfeiffer, Rupert Everett, Calista Flockhart, Christian Bale, Stanley Tucci, Kevin Kline, Anna Friel, Dominic West, the list goes on and on--but he sure as heck doesn't know what to do with them, aside from putting them in various states of undress. Only Flockhart (as the lovestruck Helena), Tucci (a sprightly Puck), Pfeiffer (dazzling and funny as the queen of the fairies), and especially the sublime Kline (as weaver-turned-donkey Bottom) seem to connect with their characters in ways that make this adaptation occasionally soar; the rest are inexplicably left to flounder. Hoffman does seem to set himself right with the film's climax, when Bottom's amateur acting troupe hilariously enacts the tale of Pyramus and Thisbe (it helps that the troupe includes Roger Rees, Sam Rockwell, and Bill Irwin). Those searching for a more in-depth exploration of Shakespeare's farce might do better to look elsewhere, but if it's gorgeous actors and scenery you're in the mood for (along with an evocative opera soundtrack), and an all's-well-that-ends-well ending, this Midsummer Night will give you pleasant if weightless dreams. --Mark Englehart

Description

A stellar cast, headed by Michelle Pfeiffer and Kevin Kline, bring Shakespeare's romantic comedy to life. When two pairs of star-crossed lovers, a feuding pair of supernatural sprites and a love potion gone awry all come together in an enchanted moonlit forest, the result is a delightful mix of merriment and magic. Also starring Calista Flockhart, Stanley Tucci and Rupert Everett.

1 out of 5 stars Disliked it five years ago, still don't like it today!.......2007-06-13

Saw this when it first came out and hated it; watching it again, in hopes of using it in a class, and again I find it tedious and uninspired. It has all the right parts, in terms of actors (though I must confess to disliking Stanley Tucci's Puck), but the conception is busy, pretentious, and sadly missing the spirit of the play! As another reviewer said, if you haven't read much Shakespeare or seen much on stage, you may like this film. If you have read Shakes, and seen good stagings of this and other plays, you'll find it to be two very tedious hours. I still think I"ll use part of it in class, though, in comparison with at least one other filmed stage performance (the Royal Shakespeare Company's), just to spur discussion about updating and interpreting Shakespeare!

5 out of 5 stars The Director Turned A Simple Play Into Something Amazing!!!.......2007-05-31

We first began to read Midsummer Night's Dream in school a few days ago. Then we watched the beginning of the movie (this one). I found the play extremely bland to read. The actors brought it to life! The director was best though, using modern items while keeping all the original text from Shakespeare, nothing has been orally changed. This movie is PG-13 but only idiots would hold it from anyone over 10.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing version, Great for Classroom.......2007-05-09

This is a great supplement for anyone teaching Shakespeare Comedies. The acting is supperb and the sets bring the story to life. It is great seeing American actors trying their hand with the Bard's craft and doing it well.

4 out of 5 stars A Midsummer Night's Entertainment.......2007-05-06

This film adaptation of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is a star-studded and workable translation of the original play. It has a movie's freedom of action with respect to sets. The story moves easily from a Duke's luxurious Italian villa being prepared for a wedding, to a forest where two sets of lovers undergo a comedy of mistaken emotions thanks to feuding among groups of ethereal spirits, to the small town outside the villa where a group of workers is preparing a play to present at the wedding. The sets are sumptious, attractive to the eye, and suitable to the story.

The cast is truly star-studded, all with very solid movie credentials, although few with real chops for a Shakespeare play. Kevin Kline easily steals the show as the hapless Bottom, an over-the-top actor who is bewitched by the spirit Puck (played with mischevious good humor by Stanley Tucci) into a love affair with the Queen of the Fairies (played by Michelle Pfeiffer). Rupert Everett is solid as a spirit who while in search of revenge on the Queen unleashes much of the magical mayhem in the forest. Calista Flockheart seems least up to par as an hysterical Helena, one of the star-crossed lovers in the forest,

Perhaps the best portion of the movie is the play within a play, as Kevin Kline and his ham-handed fellow troupers struggle to put together their play. The audience cannot help but feel sympathy as they wrestle with lack of talent, uncooperative sets, and the unintended consequences of improvisation. Their determination is rewarded by an unorthodox but ultimately successful presentation that earns them the sincere compliments of the Duke.

This movie is recommended to fans of Shakespeare who are prepared to forgive the uneven efforts of a large troup of actors for an ultimately entertaining story.

5 out of 5 stars Bewitching&Dreamy.......2007-05-04

What a lovely adaptation. And they did mostly stick verbatim to the play... Ok, so they may have taken some liberties, ie the setting (though the landscape is very like it should have been) the bicycles (though they are charming!), &the 'mud wrestling scene, which was truly ridiculous, but was obviously added for the benefit of the many boyfriends and husbands who were dragged to the flick by their wives or girlfriends! I love this film, and watch it over & over. Pair it with the delightful 'Much Ado About Nothing' and '12th Night', and you'll find yourself doing the same & memorizing the books so easily!

Staid, secure publisher James Stewart leads a quiet life until he meets his bewitching downstairs neighbor, Kim Novak. John Van Druten's lighthearted Broadway comedy becomes a lush if lightweight romantic vehicle for Stewart and Novak, who would reunite for Hitchcock's Vertigo the next year. Novak is at her best as a Greenwich witch halfway between the worlds of magic and mortals, looking after her dotty aunt (Elsa Lanchester) and mischievous warlock brother (Jack Lemmon) as they keep their skills in practice. Novak's specialty is making men fall for her, but it's a one-way street: when a witch falls in love, she loses her powers. Director Richard Quine gives the witches an almost beatnik sensibility, a real Greenwich Village subculture hanging out in underground clubs and smart curio shops. Elegantly photographed in rich, glowing colors by James Wong Howe, Bell, Book and Candle is a fantasy world in New York set to a funky bongo-laced jazz score by George Duning. Quine's gliding camera is somewhat marred by abrupt editing, but his handling of actors is superb, in particular Novak, whose mysterious beauty masks inner turmoil and romantic yearnings. Ernie Kovacs appears as a wry author whose specialty is the supernatural, and Hermione Gingold is suitably florid as a witch elder with a penchant for theatricality. For once in his life Stewart is actually upstaged by the slyly comic performances around him. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Witchcraft!.......2007-06-14

This film is a wonderful classic love story with a twist. Anyone who remembers the early episodes of Bewitched is bound to see the similarities. It has become one of my "comfort" movies.

4 out of 5 stars A rare bird...........2007-04-26

Yet another one of the perfectly made romantic comedies of the late fifties/early sixties that, along with "Auntie Mame", "Charade" and the slew of Doris Day movies, starting with "Pillow Talk" and ending with "Send Me No Flowers", gave an ideal and funny take on life in an innocent time.

Kim Novak plays Gillian Holroyd, a kittenish practioner of the eldritch arts living in Greenwich Village, NYC, with her Aunt Queenie, played by Elsa Lanchester. Jack Lemmon plays her brother, Nicky, (always a favorite name of any young male involved in the dark arts in fiction for some reason.) It's Christmas, and, believe it or not, these three conjurers are celebrating it like anybody else, exchanging presents and watching it snow.

James Stewart plays the unlikely object of her desire, (the only mismatch I can think of that was worse about this time was Doris Day and Danny Thomas in "I'll See You In My Dreams"!) named Shepherd Henderson ("Shep"). I think maybe someone like John Gavin or Cary Grant or Robert Sterling might have been better choices, but there is one scene in this movie that only Stewart could have done, and it is HILARIOUS!

The plot goes like this: Gillian is lonely. She sees Shep moving into her very apt. building just before she and her small family celebrate Christmas. She wishes, using her cat, Pywacket, as a 'familiar', to actually meet him. Shep goes upstairs to get settled in and finds Gillian's aunt, Queenie, fooling around at his desk, even though he distinctly remembers locking the door when he left earlier. She explains that he did NOT lock the door, and she saw how sloppy his desk was and that his window was open on a snowy night, and straightened it all out. After objecting mildly about her unbidden presence there, he dismisses her, seeing how eccentric she is, (and conceding that it IS Greenwich Village, after all,) not realizing the whole truth. Queenie objects to his treatment of her and puts a temporary curse on his phone so he only hears garbled nonsense on it.

Early Christmas morning, after partying at the Zodiac Club with Shep and his fiancée, Gillian, Nicky and Queenie exchange gifts at Gillian's place. Gillian gives Nicky records, Queenie a scarf, and Nicky gives Gillian a vial of summoning fluid, which she puts to the test immediately. It isn't clear whether she uses it to bring Shep to her apartment, curse his fiancée or what, but Shep DOES show up fairly quickly and they get to know each other. This is AFTER Shep tells her that he and his intended are getting married later that very day. Gillian then starts humming the haunting theme song, again using Pywacket as a familiar, to put the kibosh to THAT business!

What follows is a series of classic scenes that didn't see any equals until the 80s! The scene in Miss De Passe's house where Shep goes to get "de-spelled" and is forced to drink a disgusting potion she whips up is almost worth the price of the DVD on its own. The scene where Nicky meets an author character, played by Ernie Kovacs, (Shep is a publisher,) and takes him to an occult apothecary, is also funny, as the camera pans down the list of diseases and spells it has remedies for.

For some reason, after the mid-sixties, Hollywood couldn't make another good romantic comedy to save its life. "A Thousand Clowns" was the last really good one, made smack dab in the middle of the decade, in 1965!

"Bell,Book & Candle" is a rare movie that's hard to find, no matter WHO you know, so, if you can find it, (and I found it right here at Amazon,) GET IT!!

You'll wonder why the people who produced "Bewitched" even tried, it's such a pale imitation. It's been reported that "B,B&C" was the basis for "Bewitched"...DON'T YOU BELIEVE IT! "Bell, Book and Candle" is in a class by itself, and so much more enjoyable than its saccharine TV counterpart, it isn't funny!

4 out of 5 stars A Romantic Comedy Named After an Exorcism Method?!.......2007-04-11

I can see that this unusual and silly movie has its admirers. As there are a number of reviews on this page giving ample background on it, let me point out that perhaps the film's principal oddity is the fact that a lithe Kim Novak would be so smitten with the decidedly older and rather dull character played by James Stewart.

No matter, the actors are all quite droll, particularly a florid Ernie Kovacs. And a special shout-out to the Siamese cat that played Pyewacket.

SIDELIGHT: Pyewacket was allegedly a familiar of the "witch" that Englishman and "witchfinder general" Matthew Hopkins found in 1644. Through physical coercion, the woman named her other familiars as well. They included animals named Vinegar Tom, Pecke in the Crowne, and Griezzel Greedigutt. (I particularly like that last one.)

The color in these old movies is the best. Sadly you don't see that quality today. Great movie too.

3 out of 5 stars A Silly Tale Used Countless Times Before, but HERE'S Sandra Bullock!.......2006-10-22

The title of this flimsy little outing of a film from 1992 - LOVE POTION #9 - should give you an idea of where you're headed if you rent this movie: hackneyed story about two science geeks (Sandra Bullock and Tate Donovan) whose experimentation with a 'love potion' obtained from a gypsy (Anne Bancroft playing Anne Bancroft) has kick back effects which all end up in a love story of sorts.

The reason for watching this little effort is to see one of Sandra Bullock's early forays into comedy (she actually started making things like this in 1987 but this film drew enough attention to get her into 'Speed' two years later, that famous launching pad for Bullock and Keanu Reeves). Aside from Bullock and Bancroft the remainder of the cast is forgettable as is the story...but it is a lot better than many of the similar flicks on the shelves right now. Grady Harp, October 06

4 out of 5 stars Sandra before she was famous.......2006-06-28

Tate Donovan and Sandra Bullock do a good job. They have good chemistry. Fans of Sandra Bullock will probably want to see this early example of her work.....this is before Speed, or Hope Floats or the Net or anything. Others who are crazy about romantic comedies are likely to want to watch because it is a silly, funny comedy.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Funny.......2005-08-07

Very fun and funny; look out for the monkey scene at the beginning and the wedding scene at the end - I almost hyperventilated!

3 out of 5 stars Worth a look.......2005-07-28

Although I'm far from being a fan of Sandra Bullock, I have to admit she played a pretty good role in this movie. But, I have to give the majority of the credit to Tate Donovan. His role as the heartbroken guy that would do anything to get the girl back, really was fantastic. I thought the scene where he was in the bar before he took the love potion in which he tried to pick up this gorgeous woman, who turned him down cold was sad, but then he got his redemption when after he took the potion, in which he used it on the same girl, and then after she failed to answer his one question correctly, he said "bye now", and rejected her, was classic. Not one of the best movies I've ever seen, but defintely one that was good enough to add to my collection. Check it out, you won't be dissapointed! B. Sweitzer

2 out of 5 stars Moving on to greener pastures........2004-05-05

Sandra Bullock has certainly moved on to better things. She is the only bright spark in this mishmash of a movie.

A story about a chemist (Tate Donovan) who goes to a gypsy with a group of friends (how many guys do that for a night out!?) and she gives him a potion which will make him irrisitable to women. He then gives some to his work mate (Bullock) who suddenly turns into a beauty after looking a complete dog (shades of Miss Congeniality).

This is when the movie dies on its feet. It seems to be badly edited with bits missing, Donovan is a bad actor, I'm not surprised he didn't get to become a huge star, unlike Bullock who holds the whole mess together (just). Dale Midkiff has a supporting role as Bullock's sometime boyfriend and does a good job. Ann Bancroft is the gypsy and overplays the role.

Worth looking at just to see Bullock in an early role.

Description

Glyndebourne's production of Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream is pure magic. Brilliantly adapted from Shakespeare's play, the opera follows the adventures of four lovers and a group of naïve rustics who, in a wood on a moonstruck midsummer night, fall foul of Oberon and Tytania, the quarrelling king and queen of the fairies. In Hall's remarkable staging the very wood comes alive as logs and trees move and rustle, creating ambiguous silhouettes in the dark mysterious woodland, lit only by designer John Bury's wonderful rising sun and moon. Stars Felicity Lott, Ileana Cotrubas, and James Bowman.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Entertainment.......2006-06-18

Methinks Shakespeare himself would applaud this remarkably beautiful operatic interpretation of his enchanting play. Let yourself be transported by the marvelous staging, incredibly eerie lighting, and of course Britten's out-of-this-world music -- not to mention all the spectacular transcendental singing! A stunning and riveting performance from the word goeth...

4 out of 5 stars Lovely music and production.......2005-02-22

I think Britten handled Shakespeare very well here, and I only wish he had set other Shakespeare plays into opera. The mechanicals were very funny and I thought the lovers quite convincing, though not teenagers. Britten seemed to trust children in his operas as his career went on; here the fairies are all children (except Oberon and Titania) and Puck is especially tricky as a little boy. I thought Cotrubas was a very effective Titania and wished that a recent production of the play I saw (not the opera) had such an imperious fairy queen. I was not crazy about the Oberon, but it was Britten's choice to have a high male voice for the part, for good dramatic reason, to stress his difference from humans; but I found the voice to lack power. Others have said they did not like the woods, but I found them quite magical and for me, they worked very well, giving a rustling magical forest feeling. The mechanicals are funny and their opera within an opera is silly and touching.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Music.......2005-01-23

The London Philharmonic, the truly spectacular boy's voices, and some great opera singing show off the extraordinary brilliance of Britten's composition and make this recording a necessary part of a serious opera collection. But don't expect the same from the production. The sets and costumes leave much to be desired. None of the lovers look convincing, and the "moving branches" that constitute the forest make one think of Macbeth's Birnam Woods a bit too often! A "low budget" production can often work very well for live opera performances, but with zoom lenses on the cameras and a relatively large screen home theater, the flaws distract. I enjoyed some of the scenes more by turning away from the screen and just listening.

5 out of 5 stars A Dream come true.......2004-09-13

I've been waiting for this to arrive on DVD having fallen in love with it on LaserDisk. And it has been worth the wait. Britten is up to the task of turning Shakespeare into opera. He devises a different sound for each of the three forces - the fairies, the mortals and the rustics. The casting is ideal with a young Cotrubas as Titania outstanding. Bernard Haitink keeps everything moving. And Peter Hall gives it a magical production with an eerie forest where the trees seem to have a life of their own. All comes to a head in the Pyramus and Thysbe drama played as a hilarious spoof of bel canto. Let yourself be translated to fairyland.

Sandra Bullock in three movies all in one set?? How great is that?!?!

These three movies are great together, they showcase Sandra in three fantastic different roles.

Speed : In this film we find Sandra as a passenger on a bus who ends up driving the bus and if she goes under 70 MPH it will blow up! This film has suspense, action and yes even love. This is the first film she and Keanu Reeves made together.

Hope Floats : Another fantastic Sandra performace, where she is a mother, who's husband takes her on a Ricky Lake kind of show and tells her he is cheating on her with her best friend. This film then follows the aftermath of having a cheating husband; and the toll it takes on her and her daughter. Sandra does a fabulous job playing a woman who is in great pain, but keeps it hidden extremely well.

Love Potion No. 9 : Finally we have the romantic comedy! Sandra plays a dorky scientist who's friend has this magic potion that after you spray it in your mouth and then speak, the first person who hears you talk first falls in love with you! She plays the best geek I have ever seen, and then she even turns into our beautiful Sandra by the end! Her costar in this film is Tate Donavon, and the chemistry between these two is amazing!

So there you have it, three wonderful films with the worlds GREATEST actress as the star!

      Description

Lovespell is the legendary story of Isolt (Kate Mulgrew), Druid priestess and daughter of an Irish king, and the spell she casts on two extraordinary men: Mark (Richard Burton) King of Cornwall and Tristan (Nicholas Clay), Mark's nephew and surrogate son. Richard Burton is at his best in this tale of passion, honor, and betrayal, shot entirely on location in Ireland and featuring original music by the Chieftans.

      This film is beautiful.

Kate Mulgrew in fantastic and Richard Burton is fascinating

      4 out of 5 stars A nice try (3.5 stars).......2006-07-04

It really helps to know the full story of Tristran and Isult in order to enjoy this movie. For instance, there are several references to Tristan's victory over Marholt, which is both a monster and Isult's uncle. And there are a number of story elements that come up in the second half of the movie that probably don't make any sense unless you are already aware of them, like the second Isult that Tristran meets up with. I like the approach that the director takes to the material, an approach that can be quite successful when used with myth or folktale or stories set in the dark ages. It's a straightforward, almost simple-minded approach, without over-dramatization or clever narrative touches. This works very well in the first part of the movie, when it is a story of characters meeting and falling in love. But this approach can't handle the second half of the movie which needs a lot of exposition. And the final sequence, which unfortunately does get a laugh when it shouldn't, I think was botched in the editing room or something, because I think there is a way to make it work with all the same elements. (You know, how sometimes the difference between comedy and tragedy is slim.) Some movies that succeed in this approach are The Virgin Spring, The Song of Bernadette, and Shadows of Our Forgotten Ancestors. But Lovespell has fabulous art design and scenery. Green Ireland, old castles (exteriors and interiors), drinking cups and wooden chests. Seeing Richard Burton's red, soft-leather doublet is almost worth the movie itself!

      5 out of 5 stars thanks.......2006-03-15

It was a great present for my Mom, who loved this movie when she was younger! Unfortunately, no subtitles, I wish there were! But still good!

2 out of 5 stars Not Quite the Original Story, But..........2006-02-03

much closer than the new movie "Tristan & Isolde" that's out now. Why does Hollywood believe they can improve on a story that's been told for over fourteen centuries? If you're going to make a movie of this subject or any other well known tale then just follow it. Why is that so difficult? They made a mess of Homer's Iliad in "Troy". What a waste of money. It's the story, stupid. Not the special effects.

Lovespell, unfortunately, while adhering pretty closely to the original story doesn't satisfy. The costumes, sets and music are good. It does convey what 6th century Cornwall probably looked like.

The best part of the movie is the beginning when Mark meets Isolde in Ireland. Richard Burton's performance is very good. Kate Mulgrew more than holds her own opposite him. They are both believeable, and likeable in their scenes together. The third side of their triangle, Tristan, played by Nicholas Clay hardly seems there. I think the problem is with the way the part is written. There just doesn't seem much else for him to do except stare longingly at Isolde.

The movie begins after Tristan defeats Isolde's uncle the Morholt in Cornwall. Mark actually travels to Ireland to meet with Isolde's uncle about returning Cornish treasure stolen by the Morholt. Mark sends Tristan to Ireland to ask for Isolde's hand. There is no mistaken identity here. The two, of course, fall in love. Once in Cornwall Isolde decides to share the magic love potion with Tristan. Her choice didn't make much sense written this way, but oh well. From there on the tale winds down to the lovers being discovered and parted. Tristan's relationship with Isolde of the White Hands is not explored. She's merely his nurse in Brittany.

The ending is almost laughable the way it's staged as Isolde trips and falls off a cliff while the wounded Tristan jumps off the ship he's returning to Cornwall on. Mark jumps in after him and swims him to shore where the lovers crawl across the rocks to touch hands before dying.

At roughly 1 hour 30 minutes the film moves pretty quickly. I wish the makers had used the extra 30 minutes and included more of the original story. As produced, the movie lacks the emotional power of the original tale. Richard Burton does his best, but the script fails him.

I'll give it three stars for the production values, but the script is definitely no more than a two and a half. I recommend it for the authenticity of the production and the performances of Richard Burton and Kate Mulgrew.
