If you think Jim Carrey's comedy is an acquired taste, think of The Cable Guy as a potent bottle of bittersweet wine. The film has a lingering aftertaste, but it is just a bit too dark, a bit too extreme to invite another serving. On the other hand, you've got to give Carrey some credit for risking his $20-million paycheck (and a big chunk of box-office revenue) on this black comedy. A needy, psychologically unbalanced cable-television installer (Carrey) forces his friendship upon an unsuspecting bachelor (Matthew Broderick) who has just broken up with his fiancée. The movie gets edgier and more desperate--and in some respects funnier--as Carrey's cable guy gradually goes crazy. Director Ben Stiller manages to pack some pointed social commentary into the movie's many humorous detours. Although it was a box-office disappointment, The Cable Guy is nevertheless a daring comedy for those who have had their fill of Ace Ventura. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Blue Collar 3 pack.......2007-01-17

This was a great value and very very funny. Each video has different stuff and does not seem to repeat its self at all. It was deffently worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Kept us laughing through the Blizzard.......2007-01-10

Loved this DVD Pack!! We were one of those who were caught in the Colorado Blizzard, fortunately we had brought this DVD along with a Jeff Dunham DVD (absolutely hysterical)! These two kept us entertained and laughing the whole time!! Even when we weren't actually watching them, we found ourselves mimicking them and continually laughing! Sure brightened up our potentially disastrous trip! I highly recommed this DVD :)

4 out of 5 stars Some of the funniest comedy I've seen in ages.......2006-12-20

I originally bought the first DVD because I had heard some Jeff Foxworthy standup on an internet radio station. I had not seen him or the other three comedians in these films before. I enjoyed the first DVD so much that I bought the boxed set of all three films.

All four comedians are different from one another. Refreshingly, none of them resort to foul language or overt crudity in these films (although there is innuendo and some talk about sex).

My girlfriend and I both agree that Bill Engvall is consistently our favourite comedian out of the four. Jeff Foxworthy is also very funny. Ron White and Larry I'm not quite so keen on, but they certainly have their moments. The final segments in each film with the four of them together are very funny - especially the one where they are showing photographs of each other in their younger years.

Of the three films in this pack, one has fullscreen and widescreen version while the other two are fullscreen-only. All three films were originally filmed in widescreen, so it's a shame that this boxed set doesn't include the widescreen versions of the other two films.

The redneck wits of Blue Collar Comedy Tour: One for the Road have gone a little more posh in this, their final appearance together. Performing in the gorgeous, historic Warner Theater in Washington, D.C., there's an air of class about the proceedings quickly and good-naturedly undone by the quartet's material. Bill Engvall discusses what it was like to assemble a trampoline for his kid and make a couple of discoveries while trying it out: "One, the dog doesn't like to jump. Two, I'm 20 feet in the air, and now my high school geometry kicks in. If you jump at an angle, you bounce at the opposite angle." He has another fond remembrance of youth: "Remember when you discovered you could burn ants with a magnifying glass? Then I saw an ant on my arm." Ron White, with trademark drink and a smoke in hand, talks about dieting tips for clean living: "Skinny people tell you: drink a lot of water, you'll be less hungry. You know what? Drink a lot of water, you'll be less thirsty." Redneck everyman Jeff Foxworthy comes armed with fashion tips for the Wal-Mart crowd: "There's no shame in having a spare tire around your waist. Just cover it up." He's also got vasectomy clinic slogans you don't want to hear: "Half-off. Everything must go." Finally, Larry the Cable Guy continues narrating his journey through cluelessness: "I got married seven months ago. We're already having trouble. Apparently, you can't talk dirty to your wife's sister." A little sidebar about the comedians' special trip to the White House is a cute diversion, while special features include a brisk question-and-answer session with a sharp audience. --Tom Keogh

Blue Collar Comedy Tour - One for the Road (Full Screen Edition)

I enjoyed this movie very much. It is a very funny movie.

5 out of 5 stars Lost sleep because of this DVD.......2007-05-05

The DVD is FAR MORE funny then the CD. When all of them came out it was unbelievable funny. After watching this DVD I was unable to fall a sleep because I kept thinking thing about parts of this funny parts and kept laughing. If you have the CD you must buy the DVD because you miss so much that you don't see. BIG BELLY laughs with all the guys. DON'T miss the comments these guys make when they show the pictures there wife's sent at the end of the DVD. It's probably the best part of the DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Here's Your Sign!.......2007-03-14

Ok so I have to admit I'm not a redneck but I love these guys I bought the first two Blue Comedy Tours from Amazon as i could not get them anywhere else and since them I was compelled to buy more - this dvd was what I was hoping it was going to be as we finally got extras!! Now i know some people bag these guys as white trash and all I got to say to that is at least you can watch this with the kids - unlike some other stand up comedies I have seen like Chris Rock's Bigger and Blacker - which is one of my all time favorites but there is a lot of swearing at least you can be sure your Mum or Dad can watch it and find it just as funny as you - I give it another Double Top Dogs! I hope they bring out another one - great stuff from:
Here's your sign, You might be a Redneck, Tater Salad and Get Her Done

4 out of 5 stars Side Splitting Laughs.......2007-02-26

From the first time I saw these guys on Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie, I instantly thought they were funny. Bill & Jeff were their usual hilarious selves, Larry was ok.. his voice sounded a little off but Ron, wow... did he even pack on the pounds! I think all that drinking fattened him up and took away his ability to be funny.
I thought this installment easily was up to the level of the rest of them, and that end bit with the photos was the funniest end bit of all of the shows. Each of the guys' comedy was right on and had me laughing endlessly. In this one, all four routines were well spaced and perfectly long enough to be fully satisfied, plus the material seemed very fresh and new. The finale was also absolutely hilarious in seeing old photos of the guys from years before. Some of them were obviously doctored by a computer, but the guys' reactions to them were great. This was an awesome movie, the Blue Collar boys hitting a home run in their last at-bat. Overall, a must buy!

4 out of 5 stars tooo funny .......2007-02-02

Not to be confused with Sam Raimi's flamboyantly stylized Western of the same name, this made-for-cable adaptation of the Louis L'Amour novel is a lean, taut pioneer adventure set in the wilderness of the northern Midwest. Sam Elliott, sporting his trademark bushy mustache and eyebrows so thick they keep the rains off his face, stars as the mountain man and tracker Con Vallian. Tom Conti is Scottish storekeeper Duncan McKaskel bringing his wife Susanna (Kate Capshaw) and son from Pennsylvania to a homestead in Wyoming. When a scraggly gang (led by the wonderfully sleazy Matt Clark) marks the family as an easy target, Vallian makes himself their gruff guardian angel, partly out of attraction to Susanna ("You're a handsome woman," he likes to repeat). Pride, jealousy, and rivalry make Duncan and Vallian uneasy allies and Conti's musical lilt is a marvelous contrast to Elliot's gravely drawl. Capshaw is somewhat colorless but comes to life in a surprising explosion of angry violence. The beautiful landscape culminates in a stunning meadow where the homesteaders find their cabin, a location that must be the closest thing to heaven on Earth, but for the devils still on their trail. --Sean Axmaker

Description

In 1876 Wyoming, the gun is the only law. And for Duncan and Susanna McKaskel (Tom Conti and Kate Capshaw), newly arrived settlers beset by outlaws, rugged frontiersman Con Vallian (Sam Elliott) is the only hope. From the book by famed Western author Louis L'Amour, THE QUICK AND THE DEAD is a rousing adventure. It shares tried-and-true ingredients of those sagebrush sagas: a tale of peaceable folk driven to action under the guidance of a mysterious stranger.

5 out of 5 stars The Quick and the Dead, Sam Elliott.......2007-06-24

This movie, The Quick and the Dead starring Sam Elliott should not be confused with The Quick and the Dead starring Sharon Stone. How these movies ended up with the same title is a mystery to me.
My review is on The Quick and the Dead starring, Sam Elliott.
This western has action, romance, historical fiction, beautiful scenery, and the most rugged, handsome, cowboy ever, complete with his great horsemanship skills and own stunts. Sam Elliott is almost like a "guardian angel" who can speak the Sioux language and protects a single family who is traveling out west from danger when it's least expected. Good story line, the bad guys are great too.

5 out of 5 stars Sam Elliot was .......2007-04-12

born to be a cowboy! Lots of action, lots of bad guys getting their due and at least one lady being rescued!

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Louis L'Amour Western.......2007-01-10

Sam Elliott played his part, as always, with great "presence" and appeal!
The story was layed out and poceeded immediately without a lot of non-essential acting on everyone's part. We found it very good and entertaining. I would recommend it to anyone who like a good western with a bit of humor, romance and typical Louis L'Amour.

3 out of 5 stars A favorite cowboy in a disappointing western.......2006-12-17

Sam Elliot is one of my favorite cowboys yet he suffers from a story here that does not fit his usual noble toughman image. He is not the clear heroic character but instead one who seems bent on wife-stealing. His motives for helping the family he finds under siege are clearly self-seeking and only in the end does he give any indication otherwise. If you are a classic L'Amour western fan, this will likely be a disappointment and a confusion to you. It may be more to the "real-life" type but myself, I watch movies to escape real life, not to be reinforced in my cynicism. Still, Mr. Elliot's portrayal of a difficult and disappointing character saves this one from a less than mediocre rating.

5 out of 5 stars Sam Elliott - Yum!.......2006-11-10

Love Sam Elliott; even when the material isn't tops, He is! This one is really good!

The redneck quartet from the original Blue Collar Comedy Tour re-groups for another night of laughs, with (mostly) fresh material performed for an upbeat audience. A funny, clubby preface on a tour bus establishes a tone of lowbrow camaraderie among Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy, Ron White, and Bill Engvall, but once on stage, the differences between each comic's style is considerable. Amiable Engvall kicks things off with gentle gibes: "Men are basic: eating, sleeping, sex. I can do all those in my truck." The decadent air of Ron White darkens the show: "If I'd known the difference between 'antidote' and 'anecdote,' my friend would still be alive today." Foxworthy, the likable Everyman, comments on his wife's hypochondria: "Honey, you do not have testicular cancer." Finally, Larry the Cable Guy lowers the bar on sick-hick humor but does score occasionally: "I got a vasectomy at Sears. When I get excited, the garage door opens." --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars Tired Humour.......2007-03-29

I was rather excited to watch this comedy but was soon discouraged after the first few minutes went by. For anyone who has followed any of the guys they will soon realize that their skits are almost the same as the the first tour. Then the guys came out with their own DVD's. So I also rented those. Much to my dismay, the were also the same. Don't get me wrong though. It is extremely funny, and the guys work great together, but, the material is starting to wear. When I saw the Blue Collar tour for the first time I nearly peed myself. I thought it was awesome. Then I saw the individuals separately, still funny. The second tour, just a little repetitive.

It had to happen: A national tour of redneck comedians culminating in this frequently funny concert film, shot in Phoenix. Ron White's scotch-and-tobacco-fueled, fatalistic world view gets things off to a good start. ("That last engine had just enough power to get us to our crash site.") Larry the Cable Guy's creepy-silly persona helps deliver a set long on gross-out humor. ("I've been seein' a good-lookin' girl. But now I lost my binoculars.") Bill Engvall balances the tone with his family-man shtick. ("There needs to be a teenage driver's lane lined with tires and mattresses.") Main event champ Jeff Foxworthy offers fresh material about the act of ice-fishing as an out-of-body experience for fish, describes the bizarre sight of a leaf blower among items confiscated by airport security and, of course, renders his trademark re-re-re-definitions of what constitutes a redneck ("a glorious absence of sophistication"). Lots to enjoy here. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Homespun Good Ole' Boy Humor At It's Very Best........2007-02-09

Absolutely hilarious stand-up comedy film from well-known southern comic Jeff Foxworthy (probably most famous for his "You might be a redneck if..." jokes that have reluctantly become a part of the so-called American lexicon in the past 16 or 17 years) and his three longtime best buddies and fellow comedians Bill Engval, Ron "Tatersalad" White and Larry The Cable Guy. Out of all the performers in the film I thought Foxworthy, Engval and White probably had the best and most entertaining material. Although I did chuckle at some of Larry's bits but just not as much as I did at the other guys. This was largely due in part to his reliance upon decidedly more crude and juvenile-styled jokes that in my opinion a little bit of goes quite a long way. My absolute favorite part of the film though came in the final 20 or 30 minutes when all four guys brought stools out on stage and joined one another in a final "impromptued" (if that's even a word) routine that quite literally had me simply rolling with laughter long after the film ended. Overall, a definite classic in the genre of stand-up-comedy films that I think anyone with a good sense of humor should check out someday soon in their free time.

The redneck rube from the Blue Collar Comedy Tour franchise plays a character much like himself in this feature, which balances Larry the Cable Guy's occasional excesses in toilet humor with strong comic performances from the supporting cast. Larry plays a dedicated health inspector who gets in over his head when the city mayor (Joe Pantoliano) personally appoints him to investigate a rash of food poisonings at five-star restaurants. Larry's ignorance of anything cultural that doesn't involve his truck or MoonPies proves a handicap, but his knowledge of vermin and disarmingly unabashed way of interviewing witnesses and suspects slowly gets him where he needs to go. For the most part, the movie gives the comedian plenty of room to indulge his gross-out shtick. But it helps to have some other talent on board, notably Tom Wilson as Larry's exasperated boss, Iris Bahr as a dreary new partner Larry thinks is a man, David Koechner as a halfwit friend, Joanna Cassidy as a restaurant owner, and Megyn Price as Larry's shy but headstrong girlfriend. --Tom Keogh

    5 out of 5 stars Laughs.......2007-07-02

I rented the movie and now I want to buy it because I laughed through the whole thing. It is full of bathroom and redneck humor so if you are PC and a little uptight you might not like it. I found it even more amusing because I know people that are a little bit like the character Larry. I don't care for a lot of comedians these days because their humor is awkward or lame but Larry is easy going and his humor just rolls off and makes me laugh. It's been a long time since a movie has made me laugh this much so I'm looking forward to more movies by Larry. I might even start going to movies at the theater again. If you like to laugh, aren't to uptight in your humor and aren't looking for an in-depth plot....kick back and enjoy Larry.

4 out of 5 stars redneck in the city.......2007-05-20

Very country, if you don't like country you won't care for this one. Hope he makes another with less city and more woods, a good start however.

1 out of 5 stars Is he a cable guy or a health inspector?.......2007-05-07

To be fair, anyone reading this review should know that I was only able to sit through half of this movie. That is saying a lot seeing as I was able to sit through all of the train-wreck known as Manos, the Hands of Fate.

That being said, this movie isn't horrible: The acting is passable, the plot is... well, it exists, and the cinematography is decent. The reason it was so hard for me to sit through is that it is just so boring. The jokes in this movie are unoriginal, bland, and dry. To top it all off, they use the same jokes over and over. So, much so that it is hard for me to believe this thing needed a writer, all you'd have to do is just copy and paste "Larry farts then laughs wile everybody else acts disgusted" over and over and over and over again.

Larry, in contrast with his stage act, is very politically correct in this film. While there are characters with mental retardations, physical disabilities, etc., there aren't to many jokes aimed at them. They are more-or-less just there. In fact, Larry seems to be nicer to them than any other characters almost like he was trying to avoid being lampooned by critics for being insensitive.

If you are the type of person who can be entertained for an hour and a half by a 40-year-old guy farting and throwing some boring plot on top of it, then this movie is for you.

    1 out of 5 stars Beyond horrible.......2007-03-23

I cannot believe I wasted 90 minutes of my life on this crap. I almost NEVER find movies bad. It's happened very few times in my life, but oh my, I cannot seem to find words to describe how bad this movie was. First of all, it was EXTREMELY disgusting. If your idea of a comedy is watching fat men take watery-sounding craps on small toilets, seeing close up shots of peeing in showers, people vomiting violently on restaurant parking lots, and hairy man cracks, then yes, I agree, this is the funniest movie ever made. Yes, I know what you're asking yourself, and the answer is yes: it's worse than BORAT. Yes, BORAT. If you thought nothing could more disgusting than Borat, you haven't seen anything yet. Second, a comedy is supposed to make me laugh because it's laughably funny, not because it's laughably BAD. The storyline is terrible and the acting is a joke. It's just not funny, and it's that simple. Watching my own toenails grow is more fun that watching this movie.

Avoid this one like the plague.

5 out of 5 stars Larry shines again.......2007-01-26

I've only seen Larry the Cable guy in a few stand up comedy spots, and since I was pleased with his style, I thought I'd give this movie a go. I'm glad I did.

Even though the plot was a bit weak overall, and I wasn't happy about the ending, good redneck jokes can be located all over the place. One of my favorite jokes was "she's so ugly she can go trick-or-treating over the phone".

Larry the Cable guy had a partner with him throughout the movie, and even though it was a woman, Larry kept treating her like a man by calling her "son" and "guy", which was hysterical.

Larry's big redneck truck makes an appearance, and I love that truck!

Despite what people might say, the movie was not covered in diarrhea and fart jokes, however, they do appear more often here than in other fart-comedies (for lack of better words).

A couple of the main characters, such as Larry's girlfriend and one of his work "friends" have been featured is some quality comedies on the Fox station (Grounded for Life and Arrested Development, respectively). These characters could have been funnier, but it's not a problem, because the movie was supposed to be about Larry the Cable guy in a comedy role.

Of course, Larry the Cable guy is at his very best doing stand up comedy, but for a silly redneck comedy, this is a golden treat. I enjoyed it, and laughed throughout.

    5 out of 5 stars I loved this :->.......2007-05-06

Why did it take me so long to get around to watching this??? I really loved it. I had heard so many mixed reviews about it, I was sure I wouldn't like it, yet I saw this last night and really loved it.
As a fan of Jim Carey, it was a refreshing change to see him play a darker character (while still being comedic). Mathew Broderick who is always fantastic in anything he does, plays Steven Kovacs who is waiting for the cable guy to come and install cable to his new pad. Jim plays said cable guy and his power over people is that he gives them free cable. He does this for Steven and so makes him become his friend.
I found the ending sad (not as in crying sad) as Jims character explains why he's the way he is. This really is a great movie (look out for the always together duo of Stiller and Wilson, George Segal, Eric Roberts, Andy Dick and Jack Black to name a few). Apparently Jim wasn't the first choice for the movie, but to me he is the only person I can imagine in this amazing role. I highly recomend this if you like black comedies and if you are a Jim Carey fan. It's great.

This is one of jim carreys best movies playing as an insane lonley parasite cable guy chip douglas who just wants to make friends with a prefered costomer steven kovacs (matthew broderick) which later turns into a best friend or worst enemy nightmare because steven refuses to be friends with chip. Now chip decides to get even with steve with his own game of porno password with stevens family then haunting him in his sleep and even worse is that chip creates his own action reality movie starring chip & steven which has stevens girlfriend abducted by chip and steven has to play along to save his girlfriend. Funniest movie with jim carrey 5/5 stars

3 out of 5 stars Why is this film an "acquired" taste?, .......2006-09-19

Jim Carrey is Jim Carrey. He always will be this guy will never change. So why do so many people slate this movie? We currently sell it at work, and I've gone to buy it a couple of times, only to be put off by someone telling me "it's not the Jim Carrey we know & love". HOW exactly? Is he not funny? Is he not as rubber faced as ever? Sure a couple of his more recent movies haven't got good reviews, but who's to say you won't like them as soon as you soon see them? Personally, Liar Liar & Bruce Almighty will always be my favourites. Liar Liar is hilarious.

What will happen if you slip the cable guy $50? You'll get all the film channels (including the dirty ones) for free. And if you're unlucky, you'll also get a new friend. Enter the very lonely, eccentric, Jim Carrey as a loveable cable guy, who speaks with a lisp, and is desperate for a friend. He latches onto Matthew Broderick when he mistakenly asks him his name. He then discovers that Jim's character (does he ever give his REAL name? There's Chip, there's Larry - lets call him Chip) will not leave him alone. They're now friends for life.

Friends for life can mean different things. It can mean supporting someone through the good times & the bad. But it can also mean phoning someone 11 times and leaving 11 messages on their machine; cutting off their cable cos they won't answer their phone; landing them in jail and being irritating. Jim does this role to perfection, pulling the funniest faces which you just can't help but smile at, playing basketball (which he can't actually PLAY!), and ab-libbing. One of the latter's examples is during the scene at Medieval Times (look out for Janeane Garofalo!) where Chip asks for Steven's (Matthew Broderick) chicken skin and then performs his Silence of the Lambs impression was all improvised. During one take, Jim asked for the chicken skin out of nowhere. After doing the "Silence of the Lambs" bit, director Ben Stiller loved it and wanted to keep it in the film even though it wasn't in the script. If you look at Matthew's face during this scene, you can tell he is cracking up. His reaction is a genuine laugh.

I had no idea before watching this film that Ben Stiller was a director first, before he became an actor and churned out a million movies a year. (Even if he does include himself in this film - see if you can spot him.) Look out for Owen Wilson too, who stars as an arrogant jerk who gets him comeuppance.

The movie is very funny, but the most memorable scene is Jim's outrageous performance of "Don't You Want Somebody to Love". You'll never hear this song again, without seeing his outrageous, OTT performance. It will definitely put a smile on your face.

For many people, you're either gonna love or hate this movie. If you love Jim, and hate this movie, stop reading this review. And don't even give me a negative vote. You can't call yourself a Jim Carrey film and hate this film!

4 out of 5 stars Someone has to kill the babysitter.......2006-08-27

The Cable Guy is a better film than it pretends to be. It's important to remember that it was made before Carrey began to show its dramatic side in excellent films like The Truman Show, Man On The Moon and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The Cable Guy was thrown into the pile of low-brow oddball comedies he was famous for like Ace Ventura and Dumb & Dumber. As such, it just wasn't funny enough; and it was way too dark to appeal to Carrey's young and comedy loving films. I can certainly say that at the age of 12, it sure didn't appeal to me. That's because The Cable Guy's biggest problem is that it's not quite sure what kind of film it's supposed to be; it wobbles from oddball comedy to psychological thriller, never really achieving focus in any one genre, never really being realized enough to be able to consider it a genre-transcending, solitary creation.

Still - The Cable Guy has its many merits, and it's an interesting enough creation to be worth the watch. And it's certainly not a comedy for kids. In fact it's a much more intelligent film, one that deals with the destructive effect television may or may not have had on many of the post-TV era children, but more importantly than that it deals with loneliness, insanity and exploitation. And Carrey's performance - laden though it is with his trademark physical humor, perfectly fit for the role - is good and dark enough to hit that. The Cable Guy is one of Carrey's most fascinating characters, and he's as dark and distressed as he is pathetic and laughable; the entire film in fact is much darker and more disturbing as may be apparent in first sight. A supporting cast filled with familiar comedians and frat-packers - Jack Black, Owen Wilson, George Segal, Andy Dick, Jeneane Garofalo, David Cross - doesn't help in detaching the film from its crippling `comedy' label. Still, they all get the job done; in fact, Mathew Broderick, who plays straight man for Carrey, is probably the most forgettable actor in the film - which is probably for the best, because he plays the ultimate everyman loser, and he too does what he has to do.

It only occurred to me after re-watching it that The Cable Guy has very much in common with a more recent film that also deals with maddening loneliness and longing for human companionship - One Hour Photo starring Robin Williams. Like that film, The Cable Guy never really reaches the full of its potential, and has a story that's unbalanced and unstructured, and so remains an unsatisfying experience; but like One Hour Photo, The Cable Guy has a stellar enough lead performance and enough good points to be worth the watch. In fact, it's much easier to appreciate it now with a decade's hindsight, now that we've seen a lot more range from Jim Carrey. The film certainly has its moments of brilliance; the Sam Sweet side-plot (with a good and minor cameo from director Ben Stiller) and its conclusion is a wonderful touch, that compliments the ending and its point, and Jim Carrey's karaoke scene - beyond the obvious chuckles you may get from his lisping and catatonic singing - is also a disturbing one, and one shouldn't overlook the choice of a song (Jefferson Airplane's `Somebody To Love'). The Cable Guy is not as good as it might have been but it's a daring creation, certainly the most daring one for Stiller as a director. Not exactly one for the ages but a unique and interesting film that's worth the watch.

Redneck comedian Larry the Cable Guy (co-star of Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie) kicks off his live performance on Git-R-Done with one of the great questions of the modern age: "Ever have an orgasm so strong you hit your head on the back of the tub?" (He expresses gratitude that the VCR didn't fall into the water.) A string of gay-bashing and other intemperate quips quickly follows, but Larry's gross jokes are a part of an intentionally foolish persona. When he cracks wise about lesbian rocker Melissa Etheridge's genitals, the crowd gasps, and Larry's oversized rube becomes the punch line. Larry's no less hard on his family, commenting on an obese sister who claims to have a thyroid problem: "It's not a thyroid problem, it's a 7-11 problem." On his brief career as an evangelist: "I was $150 short of bringing a stripper to the Lord." This is hick humor that sometimes gets under one's skin. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars Humor squashed by jingoism.......2007-02-21

I accidentally discovered Larry the Cable Guy's humor one night flipping through the channels and laughed quite hard for the 5-10 minutes I saw him on stage talking about hunting.

Then my wife immediately recognized his voice and style as Mater (without the tuh) in Cars. In fact, I still like watching Cars and am thankful to have a nephew to use as an excuse to do that.

In searching for some more of his humor I bought Git R Done. It started funny enough, really picking out some redneck traits and playing on them. Then he started filling in with "that's funnier than ..." jokes with punch lines at the cost of the physically and mentally disadvantaged. Slowly he eased into an "If your in America, speak English!" rant because he could not get something at an Arby's. Before I knew it all he was producing was "humor" that relied on a racist discriminatory audience with little concern for the butt's of his joke.

At one point I suspected that the audience was the butt of his jokes. Although I did not take the time to see Borat, the critics tell a story of a scary audience that jumps onto Borat's very outdated bandwagon and cheers and jeers his racist xenophobic humor. Oddly, When Larry The Cable Guy began criticizing the Dixie Chicks for slamming Bush and Toby Keith it suddenly resounded in an in your face humor along the lines: Toby Keith knows how ignorant his audience is and you can't blame the guy for playing down to their level to earn a buck.

Perhaps that was Larry's idea as well: play down at the audience's level to earn a buck. After all, there were about three times that he suddenly lost his drawl and made me think he ain't from the south at all. Hmmm. On the other hand, I hope it scared him to hear and see how hearty and full his audience laughed at racist jokes that should have died no later than with segregation. On the other hand, he flashed his "Confederate Flag" guitar immediately when walking out on stage and willingly proved he doesn't know how to play it at the end of his set. Was he playing down to the audience or bringing the audience down to his?

Worse, how can I watch a kid's movie like Cars again without thinking of a racist entertainer behind that beat up ole wrecker. For that matter, how can Pixar still be proud of it?

    2 out of 5 stars Didn't Git-R-Done.......2006-11-10

Larry had some funny sceans and one liners but the film itself was not good enough to hold your attention. Boaring.

2 out of 5 stars Larry, in reality, hates rednecks, but he loves their money..........2006-10-23

Is Larry an actual redneck, or is it all really a joke inside "Larry's" mind? I sometimes think that Dan Whitney (Larry's real name) knows what he's doing. I think he is actually making a huge joke out of the rednecks who are totally in love with him. He is openly mocking them, and when they might get a tad uncomfortable, but then he'll drop a politically incorrect joke into the routine, and they love him again. Dan/Larry started out as a "normal" comedian (there's footage of him on youtube before his Larry incarnation), and wasn't really getting anywhere with that. So he became a redneck, and is a multi-millionare now. But all his redneck fans think of Larry as a "regular guy", despite the fact that Larry lives in one of those fancy houses that rednecks think only NYCers live in (for the record, NYCers don't all live in fancy houses. There's a lot of working class people in NYC who live in regular houses and regular apartments). So Larry is taking advantage of illiterate, easily amused rednecks. Just put on a flannel shirt, fart, wear a Confederate flag, and say you hate liberals, then fleece the rednecks! I don't think Larry really has a redneck mentality (even though he's originally from Nebraska, so he has some hillbilly cred, so to speak). I think he's just making a ton of money off of easily amused people.

I still remember the day we brought my father home from the hospital in his wheelchair. You see, mom had caught him messing around with the secretary, and had responded by pushing him out of a four story window in an office building. Ole dad's mind never quite recovered, but his sense of humor was truly unleashed after the "incident". For you see, while bringing him home, Pop and I stopped off at the local video store.

"I'm looking for a comedy that will appeal to a simpler mindset" I said to the cashier. "Well sir, we've got plenty to choose from in that department" he responded. As it turned out, the American public consisted largely of Coors-swilling sloping-foreheaded crosseyed nitwits with more back hair than teeth who laugh at the kind of humor that would make any self respecting adult roll their eyes in mild embarrassment for having been exposed to such mind numbing imbecility.

"Do you have anything a man who lacks almost all upper brain function would enjoy?" I asked. He responded by asking me to be more specific. "This man craps himself," I replied. "He cannot function in a world of nuance, maturity, or even middle brow discussion. Only fart noises and crude anatomical references will work for him. Almost all visual recognition is gone from him, however he does recognize the flag, as it is an image we proud Americans are exposed to approximately 8000 times per second, so any special education jigoistic under-pinnings would be right up his alley."

"I have just the thing" the cashier replied. Within seconds he had brought out Larry the Cable Guy's Git-R-Done. "Perfect" I said.

While, sadly, I have not been able to enjoy this DVD since passing the 2nd Grade, my mental vegetable father finds it utterly hilarious. Here's hoping them liberals and their learnin' books don't try to pull his feeding tube. Let the man have his dignity. And, his Larry the Cable Guy.

An aging Satchel Paige wanted to be the first African American baseball player to integrate the major leagues after World War II. Of course, things didn't work out that way: the visibly dignified and younger Jackie Robinson got the nod, while the Negro Leagues he left behind carried on with such brilliant talents as Josh Gibson segregated from deserving opportunities. This HBO movie concerns the period just before Robinson was pressed into a difficult role breaking the color barrier, and the rich script by David Himmelstein and Gary Hoffman concerns his aspirations as well as those of the frustrated Paige and the deteriorating Gibson. Blair Underwood plays Robinson with an expected nobility, while Delroy Lindo is superb as Paige as is Mykelti Williamson as Gibson. Directed by Kevin Rodney Sullivan, the film really does fill a gap in a viewer's imagination about what these three legendary men must have been going through--and much of it is painful to witness. With Edward Herrmann as Branch Rickey. --Tom Keogh

    Description

In 1945, the world of baseball was divided between the Majors and the Negro Leagues - but the time has come for change. Will Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson or Jackie Robinson be the first to take the field in the Majors?

You don't have to be a baseball fan to enjoy this movie. Good acting, historically sound. Very entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Bang the Drum Slower.......2007-03-09

Recently I bought both 'Bingo Long' and 'Soul of the Game' and compared the two not on which is best but if they still hold up. Bingo is still entertaining but Soul has more 'soul'. It's also a very dark look at a time when men were judged by how they would behave in society and the irony hits you in the face. Today we have so much outlaw actiions taking place and people look the other way on black player's behavior. One such player during those cruel times judged by his character was Josh Gibson, who in any league would have been a bonafide slugger, hitter and catcher. That they choose Jack Robinson on how he would behave doesn't set the record straight. Soul lays it down by also showing two black men and their professional respect for each other. Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson. A good movie indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Characters, not accuracy make this movie wonderful.......2005-04-30

Sticklers for accuracy will find this movie lacking as the paths of Jackie Robinson, Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige weren't as well intertwined as the movie suggests. The connection with Willie Mays is an interesting, meaningful plot connection . . . and extremely hard to believe.

Still, the acting and film/myth making is perfect for this most important story of "America growing up." The pace of the film, keyed by a jumpy-jazz soundtrack fits with exuberance of the post-war, "time to get moving" era. A cross-country automobile trip juxtaposes the new (a new class of prosperous African-Americans with their shiny automobile) with the old (not able to use a toilet in a small town).

The many changes of the era are used to tell the story -- the challenge of professional baseball to stay profitable, what to do about "negros" (who had just fought with distinction for world democracy) made something, somehow inevitable.

Josh Gibson was the great slugger (the "Negro Babe Ruth" he was called), although by 1946 was fading due to age and a brain tumor. Satchel Paige was (one of?) the greatest pitcher ever and was a great box office draw.

The story turns on Branch Rickey's selfish, sneaky, and noble plan to integrate baseball. The City was right (Brooklyn - the melting pot); the politics were right (Fiorella LaGuardia appealed to minorities and Happy Chandler, the new baseball commissioner, had stated his openness to integration); the ownership was right (Rickey had played baseball on an integrated team in college); and of course, Jackie Robinson was the right man.

Rickey is portrayed by the statesman-like Ed Hermann. The famous meeting where he explains to Jackie Robinson that he requires his pioneer to be strong enough to "not fight back" is portrayed with the subdued importance that's required. Robinson's background (an officer in the Army, a star halfback with UCLA) is portrayed convincingly by Blair Underwood.

Delroy Lindo is a bit too serious, and too devoted to his wife, not to mention possessing too broad a body, to make me believe that he's Satchel Paige. Still, he plays the part of the superstar pitcher with the big ego that's required.

I have no idea if Mykelti Williamson's portrayal of Josh Gibson is realistic, but it's delightful, poignant and ultimately tragic.

Rickwood Field (Birmingham) and League Stadium (built for "Field of their Own" in Indiana) add another touch of colorful, enjoyable non-realism to the story.

Enjoy the myth, but don't make any bar bets based on this film.

I would agree that the baseball skills of the actors is somewhat deficient but, really only a trained eye could detect the. This a truly a great baseball movie for the ages and a truly great movie regardless of the baseball aspect... it is filled with emotion, intrigue, stunning photography, fabulous music, and even historical accuracy. It is an open door into the deep, rich history of negro league baseball. This truly is a film not just for baseball fans, Go get it!!!

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. One of the only movies that give recognition to Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson. As well, as cover the lives of the player in the Negro Baseball League. I feel this is a must see movie.
