Fran Rubel Kuzui's 1992 tongue-in-cheek vampire comedy is sugarcoated horror, an unusual mix of the cute and scary, with a splash of postmodern pop nonsense to give culture critics something to think about. Kristy Swanson plays a Valley Girl who learns she belongs to a line of ancient vampire killers. After training under the watchful eye of a mentor (Donald Sutherland), she becomes a spandex-wearing, kung-fu kicking, stake-stabbing babe and the mortal enemy of a narcissistic master vampire (Rutger Hauer). The accent is all on cheery attitude, though the action can be as authentically unnerving as any other halfway decent monster movie. Paul Reubens, formerly Pee-wee Herman, has a small role as Hauer's fanged familiar. --Tom Keogh
Description
Blonde, bouncy Buffy (Kristy Swanson) is your typical high school cheerleader-- her goal is to "marry Christian Slater and die" and nothing gets in her way when it's time to shop. But all that changes when a strange man (Donald Sutherland) informs her she's been chosen by fate to kill vampires. With the help of a romantic rebel (Luke Perry), Buffy is soon spending school nights protecting L.A. from Lothos, the Vampire King (Rutger Hauer), his sidekick. Lefty (Paul Ruebens) and their determined gang of bloodsuckers. It's everything you'd expect from a teen queen in the Valley.

From its charming and angst-ridden first season to the darker, apocalyptic final one, Buffy the Vampire Slayer succeeds on many levels, and in a fresher and more authentic way than the shows that came before or after it. How lucky, then, that with the release of its boxed set of seasons 1-7, you can have the estimable pleasure of watching a near-decade of Buffy in any order you choose. (And we have some ideas about how that should be done.)

First: rest assured that there's no shame in coming to Buffy late, even if you initially turned your nose up at the winsome Sarah Michelle Gellar kicking the shit out of vampires (in Buffy-lingo, vamps), demons, and other evil-doers. Perhaps you did so because, well, it looked sort of science-fiction-like with all that monster latex. Start with season 3 and see that Buffy offers something for everyone, and the sooner you succumb to it, the quicker you'll appreciate how textured and riveting a drama it is.

Why season 3? Because it offers you a winning cast of characters who have fallen from innocence: their hearts have been broken, their egos trampled in typically vicious high-school style, and as a result, they've begun to realize how fallible they are. As much as they try, there are always more monsters, or a bigger evil. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, the core crew remains something of a unit--there's the smart girl, Willow (Alyson Hannigan) who dreams of saving the day by downloading the plans to City Hall's sewer tunnels and mapping a route to safety. There are the ne'r do wells--the vampire Spike (James Marsters), who both clashes with and aspires to love Buffy; the tortured and torturing Angel (David Boreanz); the pretty, popular girl with an empty heart (Charisma Carpenter); and the teenage everyman, Xander (Nicholas Brendon).

Then there's Buffy herself, who in the course of seven seasons morphs from a sarcastic teenager in a minidress to a heroine whose tragic flaw is an abiding desire to be a "normal" girl. On a lesser note, with the boxed set you can watch the fashion transformation of Buffy from mall rat to Prada-wearing, kickboxing diva with enviable highlights. (There was the unfortunate bob of season 2, but it's a forgivable lapse.) At least the storyline merits the transformations: every time Buffy has to end a relationship she cuts her hair, shedding both the pain and her vulnerability.

In addition to the well-wrought teenage emotional landscape, Buffy deftly takes on more universal themes--power, politics, death, morality--as the series matures in seasons 4-6. And apart from a few missteps that haven't aged particularly well ("I Robot" in season 1 comes to mind), most episodes feel as harrowing and as richly drawn as they did at first viewing. That's about as much as you can ask for any form of entertainment: that it offer an escape from the viewer's workaday world and entry into one in which the heroine (ideally one with leather pants) overcomes demons far more troubling than one's own. --Megan Halverson

5 out of 5 stars Not cancelled.......2007-06-28

Two reviewers said this show was cancelled by two different networks. Untrue. It was the highest rated show on the WB at the time, the producers and cast wanted more money, the WB refused and were outbid by UPN. Two years later, SMG and Joss Whedon "mutually decided" to end the series. Never cancelled.

Angel was another story.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing collection.......2007-06-27

I'm about halfway through this set. I watched episodes of this show randomly as a kid, and figured I'd watch the first season to see if I liked it. Well I wasn't too fond of the first season, but the reviews convinced me to buy the set anyway. All I can is that it only got better from there. When the set came I went straight for the second season (as I'd already seen the first) and was hooked. I'm starting the 4th season now and all that's on my mind is I hope I don't blow through this too quick.

This is an awesome set with an amazing amount of content. Any fans of Supernatural or the likes, buy this immediately.

5 out of 5 stars The Series That Shook the Big 4.......2007-06-23

1992...Joss Whedon's idea about a Beverly Hills mallrat becoming a vampire slayer is translated into a feature film starring Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry. The film underperforms with critics and audiences, and seems destined to fade away into obscurity- the movie shown on SHOWTIME 17 once every 4.5 years.

1997...Joss Whedon reworks the concept into television format, casts a series of relative unknowns, and sets sail with a 13 episode order on the fledgling WB Network. Television history is made.

Love it or hate it, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the series that put the WB Network on the map and paved the way for such stable franchises as Dawson's Creek, Gilmore Girls, and Smallville. Clever writing and directing combined with powerhouse performances and a wealth of material netted Buffy a strong 7 years- 5 with the WB, and 2 with rival network UPN.

From the start, Buffy was "the little show that could." Written off at first as nothing but filler, eventually critics and audiences fell in love with the show's unique premise, likeable characters, and interesting story arcs. The show acheived cult status toward the end of its 2nd season, inspiring such novelties as "Watcher's Guides," action figures, and a Buffy magazine. It evolved to such a cultural talking point that several university students wrote theses on Buffy's relevance in everything from religion to philosophy to the role of women in modern society.

It is easy to look at the inspired efforts to capitalize on the success of Buffy, all the while forgetting what made it successful in the first place. In the Chosen collection, it's easy to relive all 7 seasons, and see our characters grow from rebellious (yet often afraid) high school students to confident and complex adults.

As Buffy Summers, Sarah Michelle Gellar leads her Scooby gang with a combination of kick-butt awesomeness, but also great vulnerability and empathy for others. Try and watch her "I'm 16 years old, Giles...I don't wanna die" in the finale of Season 1 and try not to feel the tears well up in your throat. Other Gellar highlights include Season 2's "Becoming Part I and II," and Season 5's soul shattering "The Body" and "Forever."

One of the strongest casts ever assembled, each members of the ensemble gets their moment to shine. Alyson Hannigan shows just how strong of an actress she is, growing from shy and nerdy wallflower in Season 1 to wrathful, vengeful witch in Season 6. Nicholas Brendon's forced machismo was never more brilliantly shown than in Season 3's "The Zeppo." Charisma Carpenter created one of the bitchiest popular girls ever in Cordelia Chase, and her snobbery (and sometimes bravery) is on full display throughout the first 3 seasons. Anthony Stewart Head served as the 'token adult' throughout much of the series, and in his role as Watcher saw the gang during all their struggles and accomplishments. For me, no episode is as powerful for Giles as Season 3's "Helpless." Emma Caulfield, James Marsters, and David Boreanaz do respectable work in their appearances as well.

Making the recent list of TV GUIDE's 100 Best Shows at #28, Buffy the Vampire Slayer continues its cult status through the power of syndication and the preserved memories on DVD. Emmy voters be damned for never recognizing this show with the awards it deserved. Start from the beginning and follow our band of merry men (and women) through the good and the bad, the ugly and the beautiful. You'll never look at a graveyard the same way again.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Slaying!.......2007-06-22

Back in 2003, The Times newspaper in London called Buffy the Vampire Slayer the most important TV programme in the last 30 years. A seminal period for TV and TV audiences.

To be fair, that's quite a bold statement, and one that many people will raise more than an eyebrow too. My own perspective is that this is a serialisation of the groing pains of a young woman set against extraordinary challenges. The quality of the scripts, production values and acting are superb, but it's heart is rooted in real life issues that use the supernatural elements to amplify the decisions to life or death choices. By notching up this dramatic arc, we see the perils of those decisions in much brighter clarity.

Life is often much more complicated that surviving a fight and the real beauty of this series is that all the decisions that Buffy and co make do have real consequences, that force them to re-evaluate and re-make those choices again and again.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is indeed and important part of TV history, but much more than that, it is a brilliant piece of entertainment that highlights the fight in growing up, in an new and inventive way.

1 out of 5 stars Not very good at all.......2007-06-21

I will never understand the fascination some have with this show. The original movie it was based on was kind of cute but should never have been made into a series. Sarah Michelle Gellar has talent and is beautiful. But she is wasted in a show surrounded by bad story lines (trying to be politically correct most the time) , laughable secondary characters and just a plain bad idea for a show. Now I have read where the show was cancelled Twice by the networks it was on. Im not surprised . Even fiction needs a bit of realism to it. Sadly this show did not. Save your money and watch the show on reruns on tv if you can find it.

The third season of Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer was marked by the arrival in Sunnydale of renegade slayer Faith (Eliza Dushku), a moody loner who seemed to like her demon-staking calling just a little too much. While Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) was always wary of Faith, the two developed a deep friendship and appreciative rapport--that is, until the evil mayor of Sunnydale (Harry Groener) tapped into Faith's dark side and lured her into his plot to take over the world, first as a double agent spying on Buffy, then as out-and-out nemesis. And as the mayor's ascension approached--which happened to fall on Sunnydale High's graduation day--Buffy and Faith's battles got nastier and nastier, as Buffy attempted to wrestle with her dark side (literally and figuratively), save the world and her friends, and keep her lover Angel (David Boreanaz) out of Faith's evil clutches.

Chock-full of exceptional episodes, this third season started out with a bang (the superb season opener "Anne," in which a runaway Buffy finally returns to her Slayer calling) and never let up. Among other highlights, the season introduced former vengeance demon and soon-to-be regular Anya (Emma Caulfield), fleshed out Angel's tortured character (and readied him for his own series), and featured a hilarious doppelganger Willow (Alyson Hannigan), a vampire from a parallel universe, who in Willow's own words was "evil and... skanky... and kinda gay!" (Total foreshadowing there, folks.) The season's pièce de résistance, though, was the two-parter "Graduation Day," wherein Faith tries to kill Angel, and the students of Sunnydale High prepare to do battle with a mutated mayor and his army of demons. Aside from the series' exceptional writing and acting, this compelling year of Buffy was anchored by the consistently excellent Gellar, as well as Dushku's complicated Faith, a girl you truly love to hate. By the time you finish these episodes, Faith will have cast a spell on you that you'll find very hard to shake. --Mark Englehart

Every seaseon of Buffy was fresh , and action packed....Season three didnt disappoint . Buffy and Angel proved to be an unstoppable pair.
Highly recommend

5 out of 5 stars Excellent set and excellent show.......2007-05-13

Yes, I'm still hooked on Buffy, even after so long, enough so that I'm scrounging up money to buy the DVDs-- and it's absolutely worth it. The quality's excellent, and the commentary on some of the episodes is worth it alone.

Season Three is of course excellent, as is the rest of the show, especially since this season features the other Slayer, Faith, one of my favorite characters. Established, mainstream relationships on TV shows in particular tend to bore me, but the continuation of the Angel/Buffy plotline in this season is, thanks to the genius of Joss, the writers, and the actors, painfully accurate to life, and exquisite. All other relationships, romantic and not (like Buffy and Giles, Oz and Willow, even the evil Mayor and Faith), reach the same level, which is a great feat on a show that's supposedly just about vampires and demons. The episode "The Wish" is in S3, too, which is the now-infamous alternate universe established by the writers-- it's, in my opinion, one of the best episodes in all of Buffy.

The special effects this season are a little silly, as they're still somewhat low-budget this early on, but the acting more than makes up for it. It's brilliant, and I'd more than recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Buffy finally gains some consistency.......2007-05-02

Buffy's third season is the first season of the show to be consistently good - the worst episode ("Gingerbread"), is perfectly decent. The show's core writing staff have joined by this point, so there's no need to rely on the mediocre writers of the first two years.

Season 3 is also the only season of the show that starts dark and becomes lighter. The first third of the season does a fantastic job of exploring the emotional effects of season 2's devastating finale, which distinguished Buffy from most series which would have been eager to get into the regular flow of things. Because the character's situation has actually become better by the end of the year (Angel comes back, and the Scoobies' friendships heal), the finale lacks the power of "Becoming, Part Two" and "The Gift," and it's not as unconventional and interesting as "Restless," which is unfortunate because this season is arguably the show's best.

The central villains of season 3 are Faith and the Mayor, who are to father-daughter relationships what Spike and Drusilla were to husbands-and-wives. These two characters genuinely care for each other and are extremely likable because of it. Eliza Dushku and Harry Groener's performances are magnificent, but their connection to the Scoobies is less powerful than Angel's in season 2. Many have pointed out that they serve as a dark parallel to Buffy and Giles, but that's simply not as troubling as when the hero's lover killed the charming Jenny Calendar.

Season 3 was the beginning of a trend in Buffy seasons for the plot episodes to be good, but not the best the show had to offer (the only exception is season five's finale "The Gift"). The best episodes here are Lover's Walk, The Zeppo, and Doppelgangland, humorous episodes that were enormously important to the characters of Spike, Xander, and Willow.

Season 3 and 5 are the only two seasons of the show with no bad episodes, and season 3's Faith and the Mayor are certainly better villains than 5's Glory. There are two reasons season 3 is only my second favorite, however: Angel and Oz. Angel returns in season 3, but it's obvious he cannot be Buffy's lover after the events of last season. As he is neither the villain nor the romantic lead this season, it feels like he is simply being used to advertise next year's "Angel" spin-off.

Oz, on the other hand, is a great character who SHOULD have been fun here. This is the season he is in the most episodes of. Unfortunately, he fades into the background for most of the season. None of these episodes focus on him, the way season 2's "Phases" and season 4's "Wild at Heart" do.

Season 3 isn't a great season for every character like 5, but it still contains fantastic episodes, particularly for Xander, Cordelia and Willow.

Why the reduction in size? Why the slim?? I liked the hefty, ya know, the set that seemed to unfold ferever? Before ya go, however, I gotta find out: Will the kids EVER graduate from high school?? Will Willow finally expirience true love?? What happens to that Angel fella and doesn't anybody notice he's way too old fer her?? And, what's wrong with that Faith chick, like yeah man and didn't I see her on a failed series on Fox (where else?) a couple'a years ago?? Yeah, and, what IS up with the slim, anyway?? And does that Xander doofus ever nail a chick?? No WAY, man!!
The answer to these and many more profound questions are contained herein.
Yo, dude, where'd ya put the Ring-Dings? I can't watch Buffy without 'em, or at least some cheetoes. If I were a Ding-Dong, man, where would I be right now?? Where's tha last brew...Watch out, man, Buffy like, watch out!! HEY!! Why'd ya go an'let the dog in?? I told ya, dude...my parents don't want tha dog down here in the basement. Ohhhhh, noooooooooo!

One of the best shows ever! This season is particularly awesome, full of action and with lots of fun. I cannot stop watching it! This is my favourite season not only because Buffy has to face all different kind of new demons but also because she has to learn how to cope with love once more. This season is a must for every Buffy fan!

5 out of 5 stars Buffy season 6.......2007-07-03

I know that a lot of people don't enjoy Buffy season 6 for some reason, but I love it. I think that there's a lot of character growth and development with Buffy, Willow & Spike; plus, this season has the musical episode, "Once More With Feeling". The special features on the DVDs are great, and I've greatly enjoyed owning it.

4 out of 5 stars Season 6.......2007-07-01

After having seen all 7 seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I have to say that season 6 was a little disappointing, and I think most fans of the show will agree. Before I give my honest review, I feel just a little retrospective look at season 6 is needed.

The storyline of season 6 begins with the scoobie-gang having to adjust to life without Buffy, until Willow becomes fearful that Buffy's death may not have been the end of her life, but that now her soul might be trapped in some terrible hell dimension like Angel's soul was trapped at the end of Season 2. Therefore Willow (and the rest of the gang) unable to accept this as a possibility for Buffy's fate decide it's time to bring her back to life. Willow and Tara decide to work the magical mojo with the help of Anya and Xander. In the end of Episode 2 Buffy is finally resurrected.

As the storyline progresses through the season each member of the group must come to terms with his/her own feelings and personal problems. This is truly the "Big bad" of Season 6, even though the trio of Warren, Johnathan, and Andrew are also rivals Buffy and the scooby gang must deal with from time to time.

Personally, I feel the storyline went to a few dark places that I wished it wouldn't have, and I felt the storyline was a bit self-pittying for all the scoobies. I also feel that the storyline between Buffy and Spike took a turn for the worse, not because they finally ended up sleeping together, but because it was simply so superficial and degrading. In the end, Buffy was only using Spike because she wanted to "feel" something......anything. Spike of course was in it not only for the sex, but because he actually cared about Buffy. This was somewhat harsh to swallow though because of the way we watched her treat him in return.

For those of you who feel Spike was only evil before he got his soul back, and that he never cared about Buffy, I will simply remind you of how Spike chose to suffer extreme torture at Glory's hands rather than giving up Dawn due to fear of how it would hurt Buffy. If he didn't care, he wouldn't of done that.

I also feel that the witchcraft addiction for Willow went a little too far, and it seemed like it was very similar to a drug addiction rather than an addiction to magic. I don't know if this was Joss's idea to include this in the script, or someone elses, but I think this was a bit of a dark turn for Willow's character. I remember that Joss and the crew stated that when they first began the series they decided to use monsters and supernatural termoil as a way to parallel the pressures of life for teens in high school within the series so that the fans could "relate" to the problems the scooby's faced in some way. I don't know if this is what they were trying to accomplish with Willow's magic addiction or not, but I think it was a bit of a bad move, and probably appealed to the wrong audience. The only positive note I can say about it is when Willow lost control, and the magic took her over we got to see some real serious action that gave the series a little flavor.

As for Xander and Anya's relationship going out the window, well, thats life, and stuff like that actually happens. I feel the selfish side of both characters was revealed, and although it wasn't the highlight of the season for me, still, it was a nice touch.

Personally, I feel the biggest highlight of the season was at the very end of the season when Spike got his soul back. Many fans have stated they foreseen this comming, and sure enough, they were correct. Joss has stated that they intended for Spike to get his soul back from the very start of Season 6, and they hinted at this the whole time through the season, such as when Xander stated "You let that souless thing touch you", or the numerous times Buffy ridiculed him for not having a soul. Spike's having recieved his soul again played an important role in the final Season of Buffy, and even continued to play an important part of the final Season of Angel (Season 5). Thus, I think Spike getting his soul back was a great idea.

In conclusion, I feel that Season 6 was good, but it had quite a few episodes and scenes that I could live without seeing again. I gave Season 6 4 stars, and it only recieves that high of a rating because of the few good points to the season, such as Big Bad Willow, Spike getting his soul Back, Buffy comming back from the dead, and how well the events of Season 6 set the stage for the start of Season 7, which was a better season than Season 6 in my honest opinion.

5 out of 5 stars People hated this?.......2007-04-04

I hear that a lot and, honestly, I don't get it at all.

This was a fairly good season overall. I found it much better then season 4 and on par with season 5. In all fairness, the magic of the show left with season 3, even as the acting got better. After that, the show is still excellent (and better then most) but there's a certain magic that was gone.

In terms of being big bads, the Trio were awesome. The bad guys were three nerds who would have had their butts kicked by any member of the Scoobies, even absent superpowers and training. They were much cooler then the "personality when necessary for the plot" bad guy Adam from Season 4.

And this had the musical episode. As much as I liked it when I watched it, the only song that stuck with me was Into the Fire (which I downloaded off iTunes).

And this season featured the death of a character who shall remain nameless as not to spoil anything. But I will say that this character annoyed me to no end and, honestly, I was kind of glad to see them die.

2 out of 5 stars One of the weaker seasons of Buffy.......2007-03-30

I find Season 6 to be a somewhat tough one to get through, though I will grant that for many people, it is the best season of the series.

From my end, the season shines in the episdoes "Once More With Feeling" and "Tabula Rasa," both of which demonstrate the sheer genius Joss Whedon is capable of, and additionally the often wonderful chemistry of the Buffy cast.

Additionally, Season Six plays to several strong points - the ever gaining complexity of Xander's character, and the beginnings of Dawn maturing into a more adult-like person.

However, the season begins to falter on several points.

Some people may like the tortured redemption-seeking conflict that takes place within Spike. I find that it often works, but occasionally gets somewhat ponderous ("We get it. You want to bite people, but can't"). Additionally, while certain aspects of The Trio's hijinks are a needed comic relief, they fairly quickly lose their ability to hold one's interest and simply become an annoyance.

Perhaps the season's greatest flaw is that it frequently plays to the actors' weaknesses. Alyson Hannigan does not play junkie nor bad guy terribly effectively, and consequently Willow's development and conflicts in Season 6 don't feel terribly compelling.

More problematic, Buffy's constant depression and self-pitying schtick becomes little more than petulant and irritating after a while. As the season hinges around our identifying with Buffy's pain, confusion, and anger, it becomes hard to sustain our interest or sympathy after a few episodes.

All-in-all, this is one of the weaker seasons. While Season 5 is arguably weaker, one still has to wait until Season 7 for the return of a stronger Buffy season.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing Till The End.......2007-03-09

Buffy Season 6 was probably my least favorite season. This was the "How to create a Big Bad that won't show up until the end of the season but in the meantime, we'll annoy you with the lamest set of "who cares" bad guys ever created" season. Although there are some fantastic single episodes (Once More, With Feeling comes to mind), this season wasn't so much about Big Bads as it was the Scooby Gang's reactions to the "realities" of the real world. Hmmm. Can we say "Big Bore"? What made Buffy such a phenominal series was that it dealt with a variety Big Bads while simultaneously coping with the reality of teenage life. If the Big Bads (which is the primary storyline) are removed from the equation, then what we're left with is Dawson's Creek meets the Munsters (secondary storyline). Granted, the Gang is older and not teenagers anymore, but that's no excuse for not having a viable Big Bad until the last three episodes! In fact, we had an ENTIRE season of secondary storyline!!Should anyone buy this season? Yes, Of COURSE!!! It's BUFFY!!! However, this wasn't the most enthralling season ever filmed (until the last three episodes).

I love, love, LOVE the Slim Set packaging. I am VERY tempted to replace my older seasons' "flip and fling" packaging with the new practically-perfect packaging. Do I want to pay for something I already own just to get more convenient and practical packaging (especially since it would allow more space for my DVD sets)? As I stated earlier, I am VERY tempted.

At the heart of the first years of Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer was the romance between Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar), slayer of all things evil, and hunky Angel (David Boreanaz), the tortured vampire destined to walk the earth with a soul. The second season of Buffy took the Buffy-Angel pas de deux from ecstasy to agony in a now-classic plot arc that catapulted the show from WB teen drama to true TV greatness. You see, if the cursed Angel ever experiences true happiness for a moment, he'll revert to being an evil vampire again. And guess what happens after Buffy and Angel finally declare their love for one another and consummate their relationship...

Buffy found its true momentum during the second season, as geeky Xander (Nicholas Brendon) fell in love with popular girl Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), Willow (Alyson Hannigan) gave up her crush on Xander in favor of werewolf boy Oz (Seth Green), and watcher Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) began a sweetly tentative relationship with computer teacher (and witch) Jenny Calendar (Robia LaMorte). Mayhem came to Sunnydale, though, in the form of evil vampires Drusilla (Juliet Landau) and Spike (drolly wicked James Marsters), who were more than ready to aid and abet Angel as he turned bad. It all sounds like horror-action mayhem (and there are great fight scenes), but Buffy took on its plotlines with amazing depth, intelligence, and humor. And oh, man, the love story! Buffy and Angel's tragic relationship is one of the most heartbreaking you'll ever find. Buffy's final dilemma finds her having to save the world at Angel's expense, and Gellar (who deserves a passel of Emmys for her work) is phenomenal at telegraphing Buffy's swirling conflicts between love and duty. This is some of the best TV ever made, period. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars Essential. The beginning of a long, historic peak for one of TV's all-time best shows ever........2007-05-28

Any other Buffy obsessives re-viewing Season Two this weekend? Season Two (I have the "non-slim" version that unfolds dangerously to get to most discs) may have been the best ever. The writing and quips are at their best here. Expect to go from laughing out loud to jaw-dropping heartbreak within a scene or two. And, of course, you get the first appearances of Spike and Dru(scilla)! Seth Green's laconic and way-cool Oz! As well as buxom new Slayer, Kendra (sexy Bianca Lawson).

This season included one of television's all-time famous plot twists in the aftermath of Buffy and Angel's first...time together. The scenes between Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz were spectacular all year long. Sex has consequences, as series creator ("uber Boss") Joss Whedon reminds us in a special commentary feature. If only it was something "simple" like a pregnancy...instead, the result was lethally bad news for several Sunnydale residents, including a key supporting player. Actually a Joss comment that always bothered me was his semi-threat, semi-boast(?) about his power to fire (kill) the cast members off at any time. Carried out a bit too often. But David's incredible acting earned him a spin-off and gave us five more seasons of this amazing fantasy world to savor into our collective dotage.

The 2-part episode "Becoming" introduces the never-before-seen, oddly never-seen-again Whistler character and shows the sirings of Angel (by Darla) and Dru (by Angel). And another heartbreaking ending that causes Buffy to head into Season Three, as she did Season Two, alienated and mopey. Quite Goth, really.

I am now enjoying Joyce meeting Spike. This time in her living room, sans axe.

Etc: The great, and still-lamented, John Ritter emerges as a rare celebrity guest star in "Ted." We also have Buffy telling Joyce her big secret (it goes not well), Willow's first forays into witchcraft, Xander/Cordy fireworks, and constant lurking from Principal Snyder.

Inconsistencies: several things would/should have triggered memories of the upcoming "flashback" episode when Buffy was institutionalized. Spike calls Angel his "sire", which is actually wrong. (I think he's a "grandsire.") Spike seems unaware that Angel and Dru were lovers before, which I believe was the subject of a big flashback scene later in "Angel." Finally, Snyder knows about the hellmouth but his raison d'etre is never clarified (for me)...maybe when I re-re-watch Season Three. And, since I'm STILL in denial about sweet Willow, note how boy-crazy she is all year. Was it the Black Arts that made her lose interest in me...men! I meant to say men.

My biggest problem (with BTVS), and maybe it's mine alone, is the difficulty watching...over time, the loss of so many supporting Scoobies. This year, two are killed. One undeniably helped the plot. The other, well, led to the creation of Faith, which to me is the very essence of "silver lining". But by the end of "Angel", we lost so many friends...too much bitter for my sweet. Anyway, don't let my little gripes distract. This and Season Three are the best ever. You must own them.

5 out of 5 stars The Season that made me more than a fan!.......2007-05-04

When I watch buffy these days, I love watching season 2 more because it made the ultimate bitch-slap to fans of the show.

I was enjoying the second seasons first half of shows, it felt like an improved season 1.

What made me an ultimate fan was Angel becoming Angellus! What a twist!

Spike made his first appearance and is probably my favorite character next to Xander.

The Last episode was excellent and a sad one because it's hard for Buffy to kill Angel and I was really digging this twist.

It's a rare thing when you care for fictional characters in this day and age of recycled garbage on TV. But if you make time, Buffy and her gang will be your second family!

5 out of 5 stars The most inconsistent season of Buffy, but one that you will remember forever.......2007-04-25

Although the second season of Buffy has the same mix of comedy and tragedy that makes the third and fifth seasons of the show so popular, in other ways it is a very unusual season. This is the only plot-driven season of Buffy, which is generally a character-driven show. And the plot is fantastic: it surprises the audience and tortures the characters, who show far more depth than in the first season. Half of these episodes feature Spike (he's not always the focus of the plot, but he's always around when big things are happening), and they are brilliant. Spike and Drusilla are the show's first proper villain, although the second half of the season gives us an even better one. While David Boreanaz is not a great actor, this season uses him brilliantly, and he gives wonderful performances in "Innocence", "I Only Have Eyes for You", and "Becoming Parts I and II."

The non-plot episodes of this season are a different story. Some of them are fantastic - like the step-father story "Ted" and Oz's big episode, "Phases." Others are bad but tolerable, like the anti-frat "Reptile Boy." But "Bad Eggs" and "Killed by Death" are far more painful than anything in the first season of Buffy, because they're not only bad, but they come between fantastically written and important episodes of the season. Had these episodes been aired in the quieter first half of the season they would have simply been forgettable, but their placement throws off the pacing of the story.

Another reason for the second season's inconsistency is that it has the best cast of any season of the show, but many of them are recurring characters. This is the only season of Buffy where every character has a love interest, as Willow's man Oz is introduced and Jenny Calendar takes on a larger role. Both characters are adorable with Willow and Giles. Spike and Drusilla are hilarious but complex characters, and Spike's decision in the last episode is interesting enough to draw our attention from the gut wrenching emotion of Buffy and Angel's story. Jonathon and Harmony are noticeable in a number of episodes this season, but they won't become fully-fleshed characters until later seasons, where they will become fan favorites. The second season episodes with lots of recurring characters are great, while the ones without them are often lackluster.

Why is the second season of Buffy a 5-star product despite two truly terrible episodes and several other mediocre ones? First of all, the worst episodes of this season don't contribute to the overall plot, so it's easy to skip them. If you cut out the crap this is arguably the best season of the show. The second season deserves respect for being the turning point of the show, when it went from being an enjoyable monster show to being a work of art that holds its own when compared to Twin Peaks and the great HBO dramas.

Actually, let me clarify that. The most impressive thing about the second season of Buffy is not that it changes from entertainment to art, but that it gets even funnier while doing so. Most people believe that TV and movies can be nothing but entertaining brain-killers or serious art. These people need to watch Buffy.

5 out of 5 stars Buffy Season 2.......2007-04-02

I think this is a great season. If you love Angel, well come over to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and see where Angel started at and how his relationship with Buffy lead to moving to L.A. When Angel turns evil he is quite funny in the comments that he makes.....It is nice to see a woman being the strong one and that she can take on whatever is put in front of her. And it is nice to see a close knit group of friends and no matter what they are there for each other and to help you out and in this day and age it is important to see this....All in all this is a great show and season....And the seasons only get better....

5 out of 5 stars I Can't believe we missed this show the first time around!.......2007-03-12

This show has it all, I can only hope this continues fall the remaining seasons. I never thought it was this deep, how entertaining can a show about a high school student killing vampires be? Damn Entertaining, that is what!

4 out of 5 stars Is there a Buffy Nerds Anonymous?.......2007-07-01

*****Spoilers Alert*****
I spent most of the time watching this last season pissed that it was the last season. So this wasn't my absolute favorite season, but there were some other solid reasons for some of my discomfiture: the twists, turns, and surprises were replaced by constant tension about "the big bad." There were some pretty bad plot inconsistencies (just one example being the explanation that Buffy coming back to life upset the balance and brought the First Evil into existence... uh, but, she'd already come back once before without any problem.) My favorite character, Giles, became a grade-A jerk, but not in the a-spell-is-making-me-evil kind of way, which was really not true to his character. In addition, under the strain of the situation Buffy became a rather unlikable character a lot of the time too; and we shouldn't ever be irritated by the protagonist.
Nevertheless, the ending left me with a feeling of satisfaction (aside from the Anya thing... very pissed about the Anya thing.) And it always seemed to me that the feminist motif of this show was very subversive and sort of hush-hush through the other seasons, like they were afraid of being accused of being feminist so they never really tackled any "girl power" issues head on. But in the last episode they totally made up for their shyness with a clear, undeniable, unadulterated feminist message. And it makes it so much more meaningful because this show was created by a man who just wanted young women to have an icon they could really look up to and remember.

5 out of 5 stars The last season of an awesome show.......2007-04-29

I wish Buffy had been on for another season or two or three. It's such a great show. The big bad of this season is The First. Agents of The First have been going around the world killing the Potential Slayers and their Watchers. All of the Potentials have been sent to Sunnydale for protection. Willow falls in love with one of the Potentials, Kennedy. Although she is my favorite Potential, I miss Tara for Willow. This season is a chance to see the characters from previous seasons(or another show).
My top 5 favorites

2.Potential
3.Dirty Girls
4.Touched
5.Chosen

4 out of 5 stars BUFFY.......2007-04-11

Once i started watching Buffy, i couldn't stop. Season 7 was my final addition. I love the Show... watching the characters develop over the years. Start at season 1 and work your way up. You won't be dissapointed

As far as the product, it arrived within days and was in excellent condition!

4 out of 5 stars Lackluster with too many speeches........2007-04-09

One of the original appeals of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series--aside from the fantasy and girl power--was the quick wit of the dialogue amongst the characters. While it's always hard to place that dialogue in real life, you can accept the witty reparte when your main character is a supernaturally powered teenage girl who fights vampires and other evil monsters.

However, about halfway through season 7 (at about the same point that the gaggle of potential slayers start to show up), the show loses the wit and humor that made it great. Too many speeches from Buffy made her less lovable and harder to empathize with. Instead she seemed arrogant and was rightfully thought holier than thou by everyone who was supposed to be on her side. Also Spike's resouling seems like a broken record when we've already lived through Angel's torment in previous seasons. Yet another vampire with a soul to serve as the First Evil's plaything.

Good Things About Season 7:
-Dawn's character development. After being a whiny brat for the majority of her previous two seasons, Dawn has finally matured leaps and bounds over what anyone could've expected of her.
-Conversations With Dead People. Probably the best episode of the entire season. It could prove disappointing for the action lovers, but the scenes with Willow alone made my skin crawl. Also Jonathan Woodward is golden as a vampire that Buffy ends up having a nice chat with.
-The first half of the season has some great episodes including the very humorous Him, the excellent Anya-centric Selfless, and the very creepy Same Time, Same Place. Other enjoyable episodes include The Killer In Me and Storyteller.
-Nathan Fillion as the evil preacher, Caleb, is superb.

Bad Things About Season 7:
-When Giles finally returns to Sunnydale, he's a cardboard cut-out of the character we used to know and love. With the exception of a few good lines here and there, Giles is cold, detached, and hardly the father-figure Buffy has always held so dear.
-Buffy's speechifying got rather tiresome and repetitive.
-The Potential Slayers were pretty useless for a majority of the season and it got to a point when I kind of wished the Bringers would kill them all.
-Regardless of whether or not I'm a Willow/Tara fan or not, Kennedy was not the kind of woman for Willow to move on with. While The Killer In Me was a shining moment for Alyson Hannigan, her scenes with Kennedy were almost painful as Iyari and Aly had nowhere near the kind of chemistry that Aly had with both Amber Benson and Seth Green in the character's past romantic relationships.

Obviously this is a must have for die-hard fans of Buffy, but compared the rest of the series, season 7 is truly lacking.

Favorite Feature of the DVD Set: Great Outtakes. This set also has the less cumbersome slim cases, which are more durable than the previous package design of the series sets.

5 out of 5 stars Buffy ROCKS.......2007-03-25

This has been my favorite show since the first time I saw it on UPN in 7th grade. I own all the seasons now and the slim cases are amazing. As someone who bought the first box sets and has the big thick seasons 1,2,and three - this one is the best visually and it fits on your shelf more easily. If you want to buy Buffy - buy a slim set... it's best.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "One of my favorite seasons!".......2007-06-13

I bought this for my wife, she's a buffy fanatic. There were no problems with scratches. She watched all of it in a weekend! The season is based around a uni campus instead of the high school. Its a really unique season and well worth it if your a buffy fan!

4 out of 5 stars Buffy's least coherent season.......2007-05-14

I consider Buffy season 2 its least consistent season, but four is easily its least coherent. It transitions between the Scoobies in high school and post-school, between Jonathon the nerd and Jonathan the villain, and between Faith the villain and Faith the hero, but these stories don't span the entire year. There are fewer characters in every episode of this season (only the core four) than in all others. Many of the best episodes feature Oz, Faith, and Jonathan, but they seem more like epilogues to the high school years and prologues to the later ones because these characters are only in a few episodes. It lacks a central theme: college is not the focal point of this season the way high school was in the early years, nor is it about family like the fifth season or self-destruction like the sixth.

This is also the lightest season of Buffy: while most seasons deal with death or likable characters going bad, the only sad thing that takes place in this entire year is Oz' departure. The strange thing about Joss Whedon shows is that they are often funnier when they are dark, so this season is neither as humorous nor as heartbreaking as the second, third, and fifth seasons.

And yet there's a tremendous amount to like about this season. Joss Whedon's writing talents became evident in season 2, but it's not until the fourth season that his direction becomes equally important. With the silent "Hush" and the all-dream "Restless", Whedon became the first television creator since David Lynch whose direction stood out as much as a great movie director's.

I prefer the way Oz was handled this year than in season three: rather than being in the entire season but always staying in the background, he's in a third of this year but is the star of two of the episodes. Giles' mid-life crisis this year is fun as well, as he takes up alcohol and music as he no longer has a job as a librarian or watcher.

One of the main problems the writers faced was balancing the show's past with exploiting the potential of college. The first two episodes capture the bewilderment of the first weeks of college wonderfully, but feel disconnected from the rest of the show, as if they were the pilot of a brand new series. In the third episode Spike, Anya, and Harmony are reintroduced and it starts to feel more like Buffy, but there's hardly any college humor from this point on. All of the funniest characters (Xander, Spike, Giles and Anya) have no connection to the university, which is a stark contrast from the first three seasons when everyone but Angel was a high school student or employee.

This season also receives some flack for The Initiative plot, which is an X-Files-ish sci-fi conspiracy that's very different from the other seasonal plots and not terribly great. I think it receives too much of the blame for this season's shortcomings, as season 2 is the only season of the show where the plot was the central force. Joss Whedon, who had written most of season 2's plot and a little of season 3's, doesn't even touch this one, making it obvious that it is of little importance. I still find Adam more interesting than the first season's Mayor and the last year's First Evil, and the episode where he is defeated is Buffy at it's Hollywood action best.

The vast majority of these episodes are good (I recommend skipping the infamous "Beer Bad", and a few of them are downright classics, but there is barely any connecting thread uniting these episodes. Luckily the remaining seasons will build on the foundation led by season four and make it clear that these episodes were important. You shouldn't skip season four, nor should you want to.

NOTE: Even if you have no desire to watch the "Angel" spinoff, you should at least watch its 18th and 19th episodes, which wrap up this year's "Faith" story arc wonderfully.

5 out of 5 stars Joss Whedon's favorite season........2007-03-26

Before I say anything else, I will say that I do not own the slim set I own the original bulky version. I will give some people advice right now, if you do not own any of the buffy season's on DVD get the slim version because it helps your DVD's from getting damaged being that all six discs come in three silm dvd cases or just buy all seven seasons super pack might cost more money but it's worth it, if you don't any of the seasons and if you are superfan like I am. I have heard some mixed reviews about the fourth season of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. This was a challenging year to say the least for both the characters on the series and for Joss Whedon and company. Not only did Joss and his team have to work on Buffy The Vampire Slayer but they also had to work on its new spinoff Angel which leaves the original series and it's spinoff kind of missing something. But that slowly goes away as the episodes progress. One thing that is the main arc "some people would argue did it even have an arc" is that college is a period of change. Some good, some bad, some that you didn't see coming. I have find it interesting that the thing that everybody was complaining about, meaning most of my fellow Joss Whedon loving univirse fans saying things like "Why is everyone changing and why are there more stand alone episodes?" That was the point that college was about experiencing new things and realizing that some things happen very quickly and you get over them and some things stick around for a while. One of the things that interesting through this entire season is the fact that additions and subtraction of cast members. Which you'll see by the changing title sequences this season. Another thing that's interesting is the fact that the main villian does not arrive until episode 13 which is late for a Buffy The Vampire Slayer season. Some episodes to look out for as really some of the best of the series "Hush", "Restless", and "Who Am I" all written and directed by Joss Whedon. And just for you factoid nuts out there "Hush" and "Restless" are two of Joss favorite Buffy The Vampire Slayer episodes ever. The special features are very good in this package. The audio commentaries can be boring for those of who have no interest in learning about how these episodes were made. So, if you're looking for a Will Ferrell commentary you're not going to find it here. The featurettes are probably the best special feature in particular the season overview. Lastly, Joss Whedon said "That was probably our best season episode by episode". It has been almost four years since Buffy The Vampire Slayer had it's last episode on the now extinct UPN network and looking back on all seven season he is probably right. But if you're looking for a season that has a very strong arc see season five and season seven.

4 out of 5 stars Buffy: The College Season.......2007-03-18

Season Four is Buffy at college and it's the first time we get to see Harmony as a vampire (in "The Harsh Light Of Day"). We get to see Eliza Dushku again as Faith in "This Year's Girl" and as Buffy in "Who Are You?" (I also enjoy watching her on the DVD sets of "Tru Calling".)And I get to see my sister's friend, Conor O'Farrell in his appearances in "New Moon Rising" and "Primeval". This season includes the classic episode "Hush" and we get a glimpse of the relationship between Spike and Buffy in future seasons when they become engaged because of a spell cast by Willow in "Something Blue". Buffy The Vampire Slayer becomes Buffy the Cavewoman in "Beer Bad". The last episode, "Restless" shows Adam, the Frankenstein creature in this season without all the makeup and gizmos. The dream sequences in this episode are as disjointed as dreams can get. Pass the cheese.

5 out of 5 stars I found Dracula used to be married to Buffy on All My Children.......2007-04-14

Season 5 is a must-watch. Season 5 was the last time SMG was allowed to look glamorous. I wasn't too crazy about the Dracula episode but now I'm thrilled because I found a clip on Youtube from when Buffy was on All My Children and her husband was played by the same actor who played Dracula and he approached her from behind and grabbed her neck. Ew! Cool.

5 out of 5 stars Get ready for high emotion........2007-02-19

Spoiler warning.
I really enjoyed this season because they took it in a more serious direction. I also enjoy the longer story lines as well. I was so glad to see Riely go. I liked the character, but him and Buffy together was not good. I could have done without the intro of Dawn (even more so in the last two seasons). In the later seasons she becomes to whinny and too much of a distraction. The episode "The Body" is one of the most powerful episodes I've ever seen on tv. It truely captures the feeling of death when you first have to deal with it. I also liked the fact that they included a vampire in the end of the episode to show that life still continues even in the most horrible situations. Watching the episode i just sat there almost stunned...to me the best episode of Buffy ever. Overall, a very satisfying season and left me wanting even more.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-02-09

Awesome set. Slim set was cheaper. Same great Buffy action. Even better for the environment using less packaging. Slay the Vamps, Save the World!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-02-06

This season is a sad season. But I wanted to complete my collection. I love Spike. I like to watch Buffy when there is nothing else to do.

3 out of 5 stars Bad Quality Discs?.......2007-02-04

I haven't watched this season yet (the rating is for the product, not the content of the show), as I am waiting to get the entire season before I start it. The reason I don't have the entire season, even though I bought it from Amazon, is that two of the discs have defects. The center of one disc had some pieces fall off (it literally fell apart). The other disc had a crack in the center. This indicates that I either got unlucky or the quality of this "Slim Set" is less than that of the original set... after all, I don't think a little extra packaging would double the price. On the other hand, the materials are not always the drive behind the price (take any Windows OS CD, for example), so, again, maybe I just got unlucky.

Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) looks like your typical perky high-schooler, and like most, she has her secret fears and anxieties. However, while most teens are worrying about their next date, their next zit, or their next term paper, Buffy's angsting over the next vampire she has to slay. See, Buffy, a young woman with superhuman strength, is the "chosen one," and she must help rid the world of evil, namely by staking demons. The exceptional first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer introduces us to the treacherous world of Sunnydale High School (where Buffy moved after torching her previous high school's gym). The characters there include "watcher" Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) and the original "Scooby Gang" members--friendly geek Xander (Nicholas Brendon), computer whiz Willow (Alyson Hannigan), and snobbish popular girl Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter)--who aid Buffy in her quest. Those used to the darker tone that Buffy took in its later seasons will be surprised by the lighter feeling these first 12 episodes have--it's kind of like Buffy 90210 as the cast grapples with regular teen problems in addition to saving the world from demonic darkness. Fans of the show will enjoy the crisp writing, the phenomenal chemistry of the cast (already well-established within the first few episodes), and the introduction to characters that would stay for many seasons, including moody vampire Angel (David Boreanaz). Through it all, Gellar carries the series with amazing confidence, whether conveying the despair of high school or dispatching various demons--she's one of TV's most distinctive and strongest heroines. --Mark Englehart

2 out of 5 stars Corny.......2007-07-04

A combination of teen angst/ relationships and (ahem) "horror", themes, this kind of tripe was done in the early 1960s with "masterpieces" such as The Horror Of Party Beach.

Perhaps Buffy isn't quite as jaw droppingly bad as that, but honestly, it was so stupid it made me laugh out loud in parts.

Maybe if you're 13 and in Junior High it might seem cool.

4 out of 5 stars Hints of the Greatness to Come.......2007-05-29

Though it might not have the intensity of Season Two & Three, or the great character moments of Seasons Five & Six, the first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a great collection of episodes that hint at the perfection to come.

Joss Whedon, writer/creator/director/etc., is skilled at subtly. The subtle looks characters share, the subtle dialogue--as well as the not-so-subtle--that reveals the heart of the characters and the show. And that's what Season One establishes; the heart. The relationships between Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Giles are at the forefront in these twelve episodes, and the show was better for it. Though the best episodes can be found in later seasons, these twelve classic episodes build the backbone that the Buffyverse would grow from.

The vampire episodes (Welcome to the Hellmouth, The Harvest, Never Kill A Boy on the First Date, Angel, Prophecy Girl) are the most solid in this season, but the other, more daring episodes had merit as well. Because that's what they were. The ideas in this season were nothing if not daring; what other show had entire episodes devoted to hyena possession, monsters operating conglomerations through the Internet, and giant she-mantis beasts looking to impregnate the heads of virgin males? While not all of these episodes worked, they were saved by the witty dialouge and the acting. Sarah Michelle Gellar is at her best here. And that's not only her best acting I'm talking about, I mean her best looking. Unlike her "America's Next Top Model" bone-thin look of Seasons Four through Seven, the lead actress is a beautiful, healthy young woman in this season. It made her look a lot more real to me, and I missed that in the later seasons.

And Willow. She's also at her best here. While Xander was either hilarious or depressed, Willow was nothing but Willow. No one else could pull off the lines that she had, and she did them in a way that can only be described as Willowy. Her character was one of the best things of Season One, and I'll stick by that. The rest of the cast was great as well; Anthony Stewart Head was always perfect as Giles, and Mark Metcalf as the Master made a superb Big Bad for the season.

Though not perfect, this season is great entertainment, and promises of greatness to come. I have to add this though; for the skeptical viewer, start with a different season. Perhaps begin with "What's My Line" from Season Two, and later on go back to Season One. The cheesiness of episodes like "Teacher's Pet" and "The Puppet Show" may turn off the casual viewer.

5 out of 5 stars Not your average California girl..........2007-05-28

So you saw the movie and decided it's a bit dumb, why would you even think of watching the series? How could a Slayer of Vampires make for an interesting series anyway?
These were the thoughts I had after watching the original movie which WAS written by Joss Wheedon, the writer and sometimes Director of the later TV series. Joss himself openly admits that they wouldn't let him do with the movie what he wanted, not to mention some real corn-ball acting...it's no wonder that people are sceptic's when it comes to the series.
The first season is a great introduction to the Slayer that should have been in the movie. Yes there are a few campy episodes but over-all there is a serious theme that runs through-out which gives the whole thing a bit of an edge. Not to mention the characters which, strangely enough, grow on you until you just can't wait to see what they do next, or if they live or die. Vampire,Demons,Witches,Warlocks,Evil VS. Good, boy meets girl, girl meets Vampire with a soul...it's all here, and yes, you will become addicted...if your into wonderfully original writing, truelly decent acting and the feeling of celebrating Halloween every day of the year.

4 out of 5 stars Great great great stuff. .......2007-05-25

Six or seven years ago I mocked Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I had no clue what the show was really about, but you could find me saying, "a vampire slayer? what? so lame!" So, I never even cared to watch the show. Also I was only 10 or 11, so give me a break people. :)

Years later I picked up a $20.00 copy of season one. The only reason I bought it was because of the low price, boredom, and wanting something to watch on an upcoming road trip with family. The first few episodes were a bit odd for me because I've never been one to watch this genre. The vampire faces were a bit laughable, also the other villains were odd. But as time wore on I became HOOKED like a crack addict.

I started to love every single one of these characters. Angel. Giles. Buffy. Willow. Xander. Buffy's mom. The Master even (ha). Etc.

The last two episodes of this season are killer. I especially love the moment when Buffy is walking to fight the Master in her white dress while music is playing. Yes, I'm a big nerd.

This season is awesome, but it's nothing compared to season two, which literally rocked my face off and made me almost fail finals due to the fact that I sat around watching it instead of studying.

Even if you're not a big fan of this genre (like me) this show is completely worth watching. It's just sickeningly awesome, funny as all hell sometimes, and suspenseful.

4 out of 5 stars A great start to a very addictive TV show!.......2007-05-04

I was 12 when I first saw buffy and wasn't impressed because I hated any show on WB like 7th Heaven and Dawson's Creek.

Fast forward 5 years later, I kept hearing how great Buffy was and people kept encouraging me to watch it again. I bought the DVD set and I was immediately impressed!

The show may be very campy for the genre they are tackling but what it lacked of budget went into the writing and casting

This show does something that is very hard with any shows on: It made a otherwise more scary genre seem funny, cool, sad, and entertaining

I suggest watching the episode "prophecy Girl" It's by far the best episode of that season and set-up every other season finale for the show.

This is definitely a great season, but season 2 and the rest build upon the foundation.

2 out of 5 stars Weak.......2007-03-19

I first saw this movie when I was 10 or so at a birthday party and loved it! Now 5 years later I went out and bought it, since it was on sale (I would find out why later) and sat down with a couple of friends and got ready for some fun. Well the first thing we both saw was how horrible the dialouge was, the teenage 'slang' is exaggerated as our their actions. Even worse were the jokes, due in part to Kristy Swansons acting. The filming didn't do much justice to it either and the vampires were the most humorous villans I've ever seen.
It only gets 2 stars because of the awesome show that would be made out of it later.

2 out of 5 stars A Disappointment. . . ........2007-02-28

Man, oh man, is this movie ever a disappointment! I started watching Buffy the Series towards the middle of its 7-year run, completely drawn-in by the show's charming mix of drama, horror, and comedy. Unfortunately, this movie has little to offer a fan of the series. The acting is TOTALLY HORRENDOUS (read: VERY CHEESY)--a complete waste of talented actors like Donald Sutherland and Rutger Hauer, as well as many other big names, like Ben Afleck and Hillary Swank. So many scenes are simpy overdone, and for being a "Romantic Comedy," it's not very funny, and it's hardly romantic (ok, so that's good, right guys?). Paul Reubens and David Arquette are simply idiotic in this movie--the worst of the bunch! I can't say that it doesn't have its merits, though. It was nice to get a little glimpse into the calling of Buffy, as well as her life beforehand. However, many of the ideas placed forth about the Slayer are contradictory to the Series. For those who aren't a fan of the show, steer clear of this steaming pile of crap and check out the third season of the TV series. . . .

4 out of 5 stars Funny movie that takes a beating because of the series.......2007-01-21

This movie is funny. Unfortunately, it is dissected by the hardcore Buffy fans that were lured in by their love of the television series, and subsequently bashed.

I liked this movie back in the day, and I still enjoy it. I never watched Buffy the Vampire slayer on TV, so I don't hold a grudge against this movie as its predecessor.

If you watch this movie expecting what you saw on TV, you will be disappointed, but it's unfair to drag this movie into the mud just because it's not the same thing as the TV show.

Overall, it's a funny movie that will give you a few laughs and that you'll enjoy, as long as you don't watch it expecting Buffy from the WB series.

4 out of 5 stars I liked it, what's all the fuss.......2006-10-18

This was supposed to be a comedy. Many who know the series were disappointed when they rented or bought the movie. We saw the movie first and were skepical about the series. Well, we enjoy both. If you have trouble with the continuity, or lack there of, between the movie and the series, don't watch Star Trek.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun for the whole family.......2006-08-30

The seventh and final season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer begins with a mystery: someone is murdering teenage girls all over the world and something is trying hard to drive Spike mad. Buffy is considerably more cheerful in these episodes than we have seen her during the previous year as she trains Dawn and gets a job as student counselor at the newly rebuilt Sunnydale High. Willow is recovering from the magical addiction which almost led her to destroy the world, but all is not yet well with her, or with Anya, who has returned to being a Vengeance demon in "Same Time, Same Place" and "Selfless," and both women are haunted by their decisions.

Haunting of a different kind comes in the excellent "Conversations with Dead People" (one of the show's most terrifying episodes ever), in which a mysterious song is making Spike kill again in spite of his soul and his chip. Giles turns up in "Bring on the Night" and Buffy has to fight one of the deadliest vampires of her career in "Showtime". In "Potential" Dawn faces a fundamental reassessment of her purpose in life.

Buffy was always a show about female empowerment, but it was also a show about how ordinary people can decide to make a difference alongside people who are special. And it was also a show about people making up for past errors and crimes. So, for example, we have the excellent episodes "Storyteller", in which the former geek/supervillain Andrew sorts out his redemption while making a video diary about life with Buffy; and "Lies My Parents Told Me," in which we find out why a particular folk song sends Spike crazy. Redemption abounds as Faith returns to Sunnydale and the friends she once betrayed, and Willow finds herself turning into the man she flayed. Above all, this was always Buffy's show: Sarah Michelle Gellar does extraordinary work here both as Buffy and as her ultimate shadow, the First Evil, who takes her face to mock her. This is a fine ending to one of television's most remarkable shows. --Roz Kaveney

5 out of 5 stars One of the best seasons of BTVS.......2007-02-24

Season 7 is one of my favorites. The episodes were very scary and all the characters became heroes @ the end. I don't know y people say this season is bad. Many of the episodes I enjoyed very much and the ending was bittersweet. I wish Buffy stayed on longer. This show has been amazing. The show has made me angry, bored, cried, happy, and of course made me laugh soo much from Xander's jokes. The show had everything and it deserved 3 more seasons. I especially love love Andrew played by Tom Lenk. Omg he is sooo cute and brings even more fun to the gang. I am soo happy he is going to be in season 8 comics. I wish the writers made him a full fledge cast from the beginning. This season I also loved all the characters even Dawn. They all evolved sooo well. Season 2, 3, 7, 6 (I luv spuffy), 1, 5, 4. That's my order from best to worst.

I have to applaude Joss for the best series finale. I love the way the legacy was brought to close. what an awesome vision.

5 out of 5 stars "No. Anything you say is gonna sound like goodbye.".......2006-12-25

I was surprised how much flack this season got from fans, as it was one of the best seasons from the best show on television. Being that this was the final season, there was a lot to wrap up. Whedon and co. did a stupendous job doing that, giving the most consistently decent season of the show. Season Two is unquestionably better than seven, but seven lacks the silly episodes ("Go Fish", "Superstar", "Doublemeat Palace") that plagued every other season. I didn't expect such a stellar season after the inconsistent sixth, but this final season let me with a smile on my face.

    Great Arcs...
+ Spike's fall and redemption was stupendous, as was Anya's and Andrew's. All of these characters were fleshed out in this season. The arc of Spike's redemption came to a beautiful end in the last few scenes
