Ron Howard's breakthrough film as a director launched Michael Keaton as a screen comic. In this film, he is teamed with a hangdog Henry Winkler as a pair of night attendants at a city morgue. Thinking entrepreneurially, Keaton (as the flakier half of the team) convinces a reluctant Winkler that they could kill two birds with one stone and use their quiet surroundings to start a call-girl business. The first girl in the stable of these unlikely pimps: Shelley Long, pre-Cheers. Given the rather tasteless subject matter (ever really met a happy hooker?), it's surprisingly good fun, ignited by the chemistry between the nebbish Winkler and the jet-propelled Keaton, who seized this role and used it to shoot him to stardom--and into several years of stinkers. Meanwhile, the film was supposed to help Winkler segue from the Fonz on Happy Days to a career acting in movies, but whatever happened to him? --Marshall Fine

An irresistible concept meets computer-generated wonders in Night at the Museum, inspired by a 1993 children's book by Milan Trenc. Ben Stiller stars as Larry Daley, an underachieving inventor waiting for his ship to come in while getting evicted from one apartment after another for lack of funds. Larry's son needs some stability, so the well-meaning ne'er-do-well takes a job as night watchman at New York City's Museum of Natural History. What the soon-to-retire guards (Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, Bill Cobbs) don't tell him is that an ancient pharaoh's tablet in the museum causes everything on display to come to life at night. Thus, Larry meets representations of Teddy Roosevelt, Attila the Hun, fire-worshipping cavemen, and Roman Empire soldiers, and learns to cope with an excitable T-Rex and man-eating, ancient animals. The film might have left things at that, but an added story element gives Night at the Museum some extra urgency and excitement, especially for kids: Larry becomes responsible for keeping this nightly miracle going and preventing anything in the museum from dying due to exposure to sunrise. Computer effects, as well as wildly imaginative costumes and makeup, help make the film appeal to the 8-year-old in everyone. Director Shawn Levy (The Pink Panther) works with a hugely talented cast, including Robin Williams, Owen Wilson, Ricky Gervais, Carla Gugino, and Steve Coogan. --Tom Keogh

This was funny.......2007-07-04
I'm more of an action, adventure type person, but I throughly enjoyed this movie. It was simple, funny and well done. It wasn't silly. It made you wish that you were there at the museum with Ben Stiller.
Interesting and humorous.......2007-07-03
Robin Williams MAKES this movie. His interpretation of good ol' T.R. might not exactly be "Spot on" But it's hilarious nonetheless. I'm not a huge fan of Ben Stiller but he surprised me in this movie with how good he is at physical comedy. (If you can get past his annoying performance in Dodgeball, he does similar physical comedy there.)
In this movie, he just plays a normal guy, turned nightwatchman for a museum. He's warned about "strange happenings" by elderly nightwatchmen played by Dick VanDyke, Andy Rooney and Bill Cobbs. But even their dire warning can't prepare him for the life that is literally breathed into that place come sundown.
The story itself is what keeps this movie from being dull and idiotic. The story is very smartly written as comedies go. It's very action-packed and silly but entertaining from beginning to end.
There are a few subplots that get in the way here and there, but luckily they're minor annoyances to an otherwise funny flick.
Owen Wilson as Jedediah may be the second best performance of this movie (The first being Robin Williams)
Great special effects.......2007-07-03
Great show of special effects and Robin Williams does a very good job as Teddy Roosevelt! The plot with the humans is a bit lame, but the rest makes up for it. And to see a dinosaur playing fetch is funny.
fun movie.......2007-07-02
this is a good movie for the family, althought idk it wasnt quite as good as i expected. it did have funny moments, and is great for kids
Decent movie for everyone's entertainment.......2007-06-30
This is a good movie for the whole family. It probably won't hold a child 5 and under attention the whole time.

Love this old classic..........2007-06-27
What can you say about this move but awesome. loved it then, love it now.
A Classic.......2007-05-26
This is a classic Keaton/Winkler film that will stand the test of time. No matter how many times I view this film, I still enjoy the zany Keaton character "Billy Blaze". Winkler adds a fine performance as well, taking you from his inability to stand up for himself to when he finally grows a pair with his family and soon to be ex- fiance.
Classic 80s Comedy.......2007-05-23
Night Shift is the cinematic rise to fame of Michael Keaton. After a lot of tv work, this was his first big film role, and he tackles it with all out manic excitement. As Bill Blazejowski (aka Billy Blaze) Keaton is the new guy on the night shift at the morgue with Henry Winkler (playing Chuck Lumley, a superb straight man).
When Lumley's neighbor Belinda (Shelley Long as a kind-hearted prostitute) loses her pimp - I mean, he gets killed, she and the rest of the prostitutes under his umbrella are without protection in a dangerous profession. She asks Lumley for help, and together with Blazejowski, they come up with the idea to use the morgue as their home base for a prostitution ring.
Thus the stage is set for Ron Howard's Night Shift, a slapstick comedy with a few touching moments that keep the characters toeing the reality line, while remaining slight caricatures and driving a bigger-than-life story of friendship, love, and, of course, pimping.
The casting is superb. Look out for a young Kevin Costner as Frat Boy #1 in a party scene at the morgue and an even younger Shannen Doherty as a girl scout.
Night Shift is definitely an entertaining ride, but it does have a strong 80's feel to it, and although it's super fun to watch, I can't give it more than three stars in 2007. Plus, the DVD is one of those early releases that just features a menu with Play DVD, Jump to a Scene, and audio setup. Without special features, some DVDs just aren't complete these days.
One of my all time favorites.......2006-01-24
I first saw this movie when I was about 14, I think, and it's one that I still love, that I have seen probably at least 100 times, and one that my brothers and sisters and I still quote and reference. "LOOOOOOOOVE BROKERS", "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Call Starkist", "Where the **** is 4-K", "Oh, she's a harlot", the definition of Prostitution, and "This is CHUCK to remind BILL to SHUT UP!" are all burned in my brain and still make me laugh to this day. And, since I grew up in Indiana, it's always a special treat to see the Kugels, especially Mrs. Kugel barfing out the window of the car after having seen a man's bare butt. This movie is a scream - it does not disappoint. Plus, if you grew up in the 70s or 80s, there are a ton of people in it you'd recognize. Clint Howard is especially funny as a high school kid who rents out the morgue "limo" (hearse) to go to the prom. Michael Keaton (as "Billy Blaze") is absolutely hysterical. I love this movie and I recommend it to people all the time!
Love Brokers.......2005-12-31
What can I say about this classic that hasn't already been said? Truly one of the funnest movies I've ever seen. I laughed out loud from the moment Michael Keaton appeared on screen until the credits. The funniest scene in my opinion was when Keaton (at the morgue with a room full of prostitutes) uses the chalk board to explain the definition of the word "prostitution" by breaking the word down....
"What are we talking about here? I'll spell it out if I have to. Prostitution. We can say it. We're all adults. It helps to understand a word if you break it down. First there's 'Pros'... well, that doesn't mean anything really... then there's 'Tit'... we all know what that means... and then there's 'tu'...tu tit and then there 'tion' from the latin word to shun...to push away! To say NO I don't want any...that really doesn't belong in this word... Hilarious! Check it out! You won't be disappointed!

Meanwhile, the film was supposed to help Winkler segue from the Fonz on Happy Days to a career acting in movies, but whatever happened to him? --Marshall Fine
