This generic sex comedy--about a guy who can't decide whether or not to marry his girlfriend because he's still obsessed with a girl he saw in an airport when he was a teenager--really has only one thing to recommend it: Ryan Reynolds (Coming Soon, Van Wilder). Reynolds plays the main character's horndog friend who becomes convinced he's gay, and while much of his material is of dubious taste and quality, Reynolds has a mixture of ironic detachment and actor commitment that makes the most of his role. Everyone else--Jerry O'Connell (as the obsessed guy), Bridgette L. Wilson (as his understandably frustrated girlfriend), Ron Livingston, Bill Bellamy, and Alyssa Milano--have their moments, but the script doesn't offer them much to work with. When it isn't drowning in clichés about men and women, it's trying way too hard to be "over the top." --Bret Fetzer

"Buying the Cow" is a very cute and funny film. I'd say that its charm is that the plot captures the humor, innocence and inevitable emotional crossroads of romantic relationships. There is at least one minor plot twist involving Ryan Reynolds' character, Mike, that'll keep you laughing for days! The major plot twist involving Jerry O'Connell's character, David, was predicable, but endearing and welcome. Today's films seem to ignore the audience's expectation of "conflict followed by resolution." But, predictable or not, what's wrong with a little heart warming resolution now and then? This film delivers the goods on the hoof!

This movie asks the question: "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?" David (Jerry O'Connell) finds himself under increasing pressure to take the final plunge with his long time girlfriend (Bridgitte Wilson) after his best buddy Tyler becomes engaged. This news wreacks havoc on David's life as he tries to find the answer to the question the movie asks.
This movie is funny, very funny at times and also at times quite stupid, but it is good quality entertainment nonetheless. Ryan Reynolds steals the show unsurprisingly, as Mike, a freind to David and Tyler who is trying to figure out his own problems where he fits in in the world. A scene where he wakes up in a strangers bed after a hugely intoxicating night is absolutely hillarious...
I bought this movie because I am a fan of the young cast, especially Reynolds and also because it is directed by Walt Becker, the same guy who gave us Van Wilder. Fans of that movie will love this, as will all fans of Reynolds and Jerry O'Connell. Anyone else may find it to be 'not their kinda movie'.

It's a funny movie, and without going in to too much detail I will say, while Alyssa Milano was quite gorgeous, I am very angry the scenes in the menu and on the back of the DVD apparently never actually happen.

Other than that, great movie. Acting is decent, movie is hilarious, the plot is kinda ... weak, but still good.

This movie was very comedic but too sexual for my taste.

The plot was simple. Girl gives guy ultimatuem. Guy trys to find old crush he never met. Girl and Guy get back together but then Guy finally meets old crush and so they live happily ever after.

My fave scene had to be the one with all the dates at the same time. I couldn't help but die laughing. The cast was excellent and there was definately some chemistry between Alyssa and Jerry that should've been explored.

    Love Stinks
    In Love Stinks, Seth (French Stewart from TV's 3rd Rock from the Sun), a sitcom writer-producer, meets Chelsea (Bridgette Wilson, Billy Madison) at his best friend's wedding. He's immediately smitten by her blonde babeness; she's attracted to his income and single status. For the next 45 minutes she tries to get him to commit though a combination of skimpy outfits and wild mood swings. When she finally realizes he's not going to, she turns into a vengeful harpy and tries to make his life hell. This might be funny if you believe that women are manipulative, money hungry, marriage-fixated psychotics--but maybe not. The standard of wit is best expressed in the line, "Drop the probe and step away from my ass," declared by Seth as he's about to receive an unrequested colonic in a spa. It's always wise to be wary of comedies with a comedy writer as the main character, especially when the movie is written and directed by a comedy writer. Writer-director Jeff Franklin previously made two TV movies starring the Olsen Twins; this may have been his attempt to exorcise some relationship gone awry. Love Stinks also features Bill Bellamy (Love Jones, Def Jam's How to Be a Player) and supermodel Tyra Banks. --Bret Fetzer
