Gosh--kids. You gotta love 'em, right? Well, not necessarily-- particularly if you're Adam Sandler. But Big Daddy is about paternal devotion in its own oblique way. Sandler plays Sonny Koufax, a law-school grad who has been milking an accident settlement to cover his living expenses, while he continues to slack his way through life. But when his girlfriend threatens to dump him, he decides to show her he's serious about their relationship and pretends to adopt a little boy (in fact, his roommate's son from a one-night stand several years earlier, who shows up on their doorstep just after the roommate leaves town on a job). But after taking care of the tyke for a couple of days, Sonny finds that it's a little like feeding that stray dog that followed you home: Before you know it, you've grown attached to the little fella--and then what are you going to do? By turns crude and maudlin, Big Daddy has its share of laughs and will certainly entertain fans who like Adam Sandler best when he plays the case of arrested development with a smart-aleck retort for everything. --Marshall Fine

For anyone who wants to catch a glimpse of the Los Angeles "lounge" scene that was in vogue during the early and mid-1990s, here's the movie that virtually defined that brief but colorful nightlife milieu. As an added bonus, it just happens to be a very funny, observant story about love, loss, and male bonding among a group of friends who struggle to find decent jobs by day, and lurk through Hollywood's hottest nightclubs by night. A sort of latter-day Rat Pack, they include Mike (writer-actor Jon Favreau) and his closest buddy, Trent (Vince Vaughn), who are waiting for the big show-biz break that seems to be eluding them. Mike's twisted up about the girlfriend he left back East to pursue his going-nowhere standup comedy career, and Trent uses the word "money" as an adjective ("Man, we look totally money tonight") with such frequency that you may find yourself slipping into lounge-lizard mode after watching the movie. One of the most noteworthy indie-film success stories of the '90s, this time-capsule comedy seized its moment in the spotlight, launched several promising careers, and continues to maintain its lasting appeal. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Perfection. BIG $$ ain't the key to a good film!.......2007-05-29

Jon Favreau wrote a fantastic script; Doug Liman directed a great flick; Vince Vaughn owned the film. 'Nuf said!

OK, maybe a little more. This has got to be one of, if not THE, greatest indie films of all time.

And, like I said, BIG MONEY doesn't make a great movie. There have been plenty of big dollar box office flops, but you can probably count on 1 hand (maybe 2) the number of films that were made for what equates to peanuts and still totally own every minute on the screen.

This was an instant cult classic, acclaimed by critics, and it got the big-time attention it deserved later on.

Mike, an every day "joe", broke up with his girl, moved to L.A. to be a comedian, and settled in to a long time funk. His "west coast" pals, some real characters (enter Vince Vaughn and Patrick Van Horn), give him all the right advice which Mike uses at the wrong time. His "east coast" pal (Ron Livingston) tries to keep Mike grounded.

But, basically what you get is a train wreck in the love department, backlit by the glitz of Vegas and the back-alley bar scene of L.A. Anyone can relate to Mike and most of us have had moments like the other guys too.

Just check out this movie. A review or summary just can't do it justice. It is intelligent, sappy (in a good way), relatable and HILARIOUS.

FYI, great soundtrack to boot.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific "old school" feel good movie!.......2007-05-28

Great movie, with lots of one-liners, and a must-see for the serious Vince Vaughn fan. Jon Favreau is perfect as his buddy, Mike, whose lines in the movie cannot be forgotten. Captures the ideal late '90's swing era to a T.

5 out of 5 stars Go, Daddy-O!.......2007-05-24

Few films have explored the pain of being a 20-something single as hilariously as Doug Liman's classic "Swingers." If you've never seen this film, which packs a bevy of memorable scenes and spawned several catch phrases ("You're so money!"), it's high time you checked it out.

"Swingers" follows the ups and downs (mostly downs) of Mike (Jon Favreau), a struggling actor who has recently moved to Los Angeles from New York. When he moved, he left behind a girlfriend of six years, and he hasn't been able to get her off his mind, a problem that's exasperated by his lack of success on the L.A. singles scene.

Fortunately for Mikey, he's got some buddies who are bent on cheering him up, most notably the smooth-talking Trent (Vince Vaughn), who convinces Mike to make an impromptu trip to Vegas to wash away his problems with gambling, women and booze. It's the first of many unsuccessful (and roaringly funny) forays into the singles scene for Mikey, who is alternately too nice, too nervous, and too neurotic to achieve any level of success with the ladies.

This sort of material has been mined with much less success by many movies, but "Swingers" has three noteworthy forces working for it: star Favreau's superb script, a great cast and Liman's top-notch direction.

The witty screenplay delivers enough laughs and memorable lines to reward repeat viewings, from Trent's boast that he's going to "Find me two cocktail waitresses and pull me a Fredo" to a hilarious conversation between Mike, Trent and the rest of the crew about how long you should wait before calling a girl whose "digits" you got.

Liman, who also directed the excellent "Go," throws in a a number of deft touches that add to the script. Check out the slo-mo walking scene that's an amusing homage to Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs." Or the unusual imagery complete with "Jaws" music to illustrate Trent's growing discomfort with a girl he just met.

The ensemble cast is terrific, with special kudos to the two leads, Favreau and Vaughn. Favreau is outstanding as the lovable nice-guy loser Mike, giving a deeply funny and even touching performance. Case in point: Mike's ill-advised attempt to leave a message on the answering machine of a hottie he met just a few hours before. As the womanizing Trent, Vaughn exudes star charisma, delivering his lines with flair without falling into cartoonish excess.

Despite its low budget and unknown (at the time) director and cast, "Swingers" became a modest indie hit. Now, a decade after its release, great word-of-mouth buzz has transformed it into a deserving cult classic.

4 out of 5 stars A fair treatise on the random order of Life.......2007-05-12

The turbulence, despair, and despondency of navigating the multiple persons that occupy the space between significant relationships is obvious in this film. Although the production of this movie is fair, the arbitrary chance at play in meeting someone of significance is painfully well-represented here. Although I think this movie gets better with a second view, and it is a possible "sleeper", I would not consider it as part of a "Collector's Series" - seems like a stretch, an overzealous marketing effort.

4 out of 5 stars A nice comedy.......2006-10-19

If there is one thing that Adam Sandler does well, that's comedy, and Big Daddy is just that: a good comedy.
The movie brings to the screen the story of a good-hearted though rather lazy and immature young man who in an effort to save his relationship attempts to impress his girlfriend by adopting a five-year-old boy!
Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well.
The setting, the plot, and the dialogues are all good, though what was the point of incorporating a homosexual couple into this movie? It came out of the blue and served no purpose whatsoever, except to taint the overall mood.
In a nutshell, it's probably not a movie you would want to add to your collection, but it will surely provide for an evening's entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Big Daddy is Big Hit........2006-08-06

Big Daddy is about a guy named Sonny (Adam Sandler) who adopts a 5 year old kid (Julian) under the name of his room-mate, Kevin Garrety (Jon Stewart) to impress his girlfriend Vanessa (Kristy Swanson). He finds out his girlfriend is dating an older guy and Sonny is dumped and left with the kid. Sonny decides he can take care of him until Social Services can find an foster home for him, but Sonny falls in love with the kid and avoids Social Services. Then Social Services finds out Sonny was using Kevin's name and they take the kid away. Sonny tries to fight for him, but unable to get him and custody goes to the real Kevin who is in China for most of the movie. Juilan wants Sonny to be his dad, but Sonny says he can't, but he can always be his friend. So the movie ends at a happy note.
During the movie you'll have some laughs, giiggles and some tear jerking scenes. The funniest part of the movie is the court room scene, with Nazo, Mr. Hurley and the Bum. I almost cried when Social Services takes Julien away.
Overall great story-line. By far the best comedy and great story to a movie.

Few movies, documentary or otherwise, capture the relaxed exuberance of Dave Chappelle's Block Party. This is Chappelle's first project since his show on Comedy Central received so much popular and critical attention that he apparently had a psychological meltdown and fled to Africa to escape. You can still see a hint of weariness and wariness in his eyes--but even more you can see his relief to be launching a project that bears no expectations. Funded by his own money and free to all who attended, Chappelle set up a secret concert location in Brooklyn and pulled together a musical lineup of stellar acts, including Erykah Badu, Kanye West, Mos Def, Jill Scott, Common, the Roots, Dead Prez, and the reunion of the Fugees, all of whom give vibrant performances. But Block Party doesn't just capture the show; at least a third of the movie is Chappelle wandering around Brooklyn or the Ohio neighborhood where he lives and interacting with the people he meets, many of whom he gives free tickets for the show. These scenes, combined with footage of the performers rehearsing or just gassing around before the show, offer a sense that for Chappelle performing is just an extension of his everyday life; that he takes just as much pleasure from goofing around with one person as he does goofing around in front of hundreds or thousands. Putting together this event becomes a unique self-portrait as well as an experience that rejuvenated Chappelle. If you surrender to the vitality of the show and Chappelle's loose comic jazz, you may find it rejuvenating too. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars The Chappelle you wernt expecting.......2007-04-26

I really enjoyed seeing a different side to Dave. I agree with most reviewers that this movie is not really funny by any means, but it gave me a new light to the comedian. There is a serious and very respectable side to Mr. Chappelle and i feel he is the next big comedian to hit our generation. I never knew Chappelles understanding and respect for jazz music and his dedication to learning Round Midnight by the great Monk. He brings up almost "almost" a philosophical way of looking at how comedians and musicians intertwine. I enjoyed it, the replay value isn't there though. There was not enough footage of the music performances. It could have been set up into 2 parts i felt, The Concert, and than his little documentary, but it wasnt set up like that. Overall i gained some respect for Dave after seeing this

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could've been there too!.......2007-03-22

It's as if someone downloaded one of my dreams. If I were to wish for a dream movie, this would be it. Not only does it have concert performances by some of my favourite hip-hop and neo-soul artistes ever - Kanye West, Common, Mos Def, The Roots, dead prez, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu, just to name a few - it's all presented by my favourite comedian ever (well, maybe apart from Chris Rock), the fantastic Dave Chappelle. The movie was shown on TV here a few weeks ago and after seeing it the once, I just knew I had to see it again and ordered the DVD immediately.

Basically, we get to follow Dave as he returns to his hometown in Ohio to pass out invitations to his block party in Brooklyn, New York, including to an entire college or high school marching band. We get to see how he puts the show together and finally, we get to see the show itself. All the while, Dave peppers the movie here and there with his unique and inimitable humour.

Watching the movie, I was reminded of several things: One, how powerful hip-hop music is and how I need to try and get out and see more concerts before I'm finally too old to do so; Two, how beautiful and talented black people are; And three, how I need to get a couple of CDs added to my collection, particularly Erykah Badu's Worldwide Underground and Cody Chesnutt's The Headphone Masterpiece. I might actually get the soundtrack to the movie while I'm at it.

But more than anything else, I was reminded of the fact that Dave Chappelle is probably one of the funniest, most engaging and most charming comedians of our time. I love him to death. He says it was the "best single day" of his career and I believe him. He really seemed to relish the opportunity to put the show together for people, many of whom might never have had the opportunity to attend such an event.

It was also particularly interesting to see The Fugees on stage but while all three members gave a good performance, Lauryn Hill's heart didn't seem to be in it at all. Later on when she spoke to camera, her eyes just seemed dead.

The DVD has some pretty cool extras. Extended music acts, (you can play the movie either in its original format or with the extended concert performances), A short documentary "The Ohio Players: The Bus Ride", and two others "September in Brooklyn" and "The Making of Block Party".

I can't seem to get the subtitles to work on the main movie though but that's no big thing. I'm so glad I bought this DVD and can already see myself playing it over and over and never getting tired of it.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I were there!.......2007-01-19

One of the best concerts I've ever seen. I love just about everything Dave Chappelle does. I loved it soooo much I bought the CD too.

Robert Townsend has managed to build an entire career on the basis of one funny movie (The Hollywood Shuffle)--even though he hasn't had one that was anywhere near as funny since. Case in point: This would-be comedy about an unwilling black superhero. Townsend plays a schoolteacher in a bad Washington, D.C., neighborhood that is controlled by a vicious drug gang (recognizable by their blonde-dyed hair). Then he is hit by a meteor and suddenly finds that he has super strength and can fly (and can read the minds of dogs). But Townsend's writing is surprisingly weak and, despite a cast that includes a mugging Bill Cosby, Eddie Griffin, Robert Guillaume, and sadly miscast James Earl Jones, this movie is never able to get off the ground. --Marshall Fine

It was an ok movie, and it had madd cameo's it had Chris Tucker, Bill Cosby and a lot of famous black actors. That aspect maid the movie good.

3 out of 5 stars Simply wasted potential.......2006-09-16

Strange movie. I find it both incredibly stupid and yet entertaining. I dont mean stupid in a campy fun way. I mean "What lame brained idiot wrote this?!?" kind of stupid. If it weren't for such a large array of a very talented all-star cast this movie would have no hope whatsoever. I do admit, as stupid Meteor Man was I actually enjoyed some parts of it very much.

Character development is a major crapfest in this movie. Our hero in my opinion takes way too long to figure out what he has to do and ends up dragging the movie because of it. The villains are major stupids in their entire 'coolness' splendor. What's the deal with the gold Slinky? Pretty much all the characters are pretty one-dimensional and simple minded. That's not to say the acting was the same way. As a matter of fact the acting was superb all things considered. With such big names like Rob Townsend, Bill Cosby, James Earl Jones, Sinbad, and whole mess of others I'm not surprised the acting came up aces. As a matter of fact that's probably the only thing that saved this movie.

Being a superhero movie the special effects are pretty standard for things like flying, laser eyes and of course a crashing meteor (that seems to home in on our hero). In other words the special effects are functional. The things to look for are a few scenes that do shine above all the crap in the rest of the movie. The final fight scene, by the way, is not one of them. For one it's painfully long. I was begging for the final scene to be over it was taking so long. Plus, like much of the writing, it ends up being very, very stupid.

If only a condensed version of this movie was made to squeeze out the lame parts and leave in the good stuff I can recommend it. As it stands you would have to sit through some dumb scenes to get to the good stuff. If you have nothing better to do then give The Meteor Man a chance. Just keep in mind it will be a waiting game here and there until you get to the truly fun scenes.

5 out of 5 stars A funny and sincere classic .......2006-01-15

Meteor Man is sort of a comedy but it teaches you lessons as well. This is a great movie to show to older kids. While trying to be funny it puts across messages that should be taken in and followed. Now maybe people hate the movie because of Robert Townsend's attempt of a wacky super hero or maybe it's just because they have no imagination and can't get on his level.
The story is original and deals with the problems on the streets and Townsend gave what everyone wanted in a neighborhood being harassed by crime, he gave them a super hero. There's a lot of funny scenes in this movie but it took on problems that needed to be dealt with and if Robert Townsend gets low ratings for Meteor Man then maybe nothing will ever change.

3 out of 5 stars Funny Cult Classic.......2006-01-15

I thought it was funny when I first saw it back in the 90's and I baught it two weeks ago. RT reminds me of Eddie Murphy in his role as Meteor Man. You have to be open to this kind of humor to enjoy it. The special effects are good as well. Worth a look.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-04-02

If you like movies like boyz in the hood, meance 2 society then you going to like south central

5 out of 5 stars Worth watching........2006-08-05

...but it makes me sad the level of truth behind it. What makes me sadder is that this kind of mentality still exists today. I would definitely rank this one up with the likes of Boys in The Hood and New Jack City.

4 out of 5 stars Boys drop hoods.......2006-06-04

One of the overlooked gang movies, with exceptional realism against the same backdrop as "Boyz n Hood," the undeserved Hollywood-styled movie. "South Central," on the other hand, gets more from the cast and B-movie economics than "Hood." The director and writer narrow the aim and score more for doing so, in my opinion. Of those who play at violence, the plot centers on one who owns up to his bad ways and pays the price. Gang warfare, the soup de jour of Hollywood, makes too much money off bad languange and violence. This B-movie responsibly shows the price for dead-end lifestyles that embrace drugs and violence as the only alternatives. Gang warfare is as obsolete today as dueling in the 16th Century. This is one movie that asks its youth to take responsibilty, reform themselves through self-education,not to waste their freedom that comes with deadly consequences.

4 out of 5 stars "Deuce Got My Son Shot!".......2005-05-23

When you think about it, many 'hood movies dropped around the early 90's, like "Boyz N The Hood", "New Jack City", "Menace II Society" etc. All of these got the recognition they deserved, and they have all stood the test of time, as all of them are over 10 years old. However, there is one movie that didn't get the recognition and publicity that it should have. This is the 1991 "South Central". South Central is a great hood movie with a different twist to it than the others I mentioned. It is also very touching in certain places. It takes place in Los Angelas just like almost all these other hood movies so that's no surprise.

The movie starts off with a young Bobby Johnson getting out of jail. After fighting with a local drug-dealer over his girlfriend, he kills the drug-dealer who's name is Genie Lamp. He lays low for a few months, then he decides to ride out with a few other members of the Deuce gang, which he is part of. They pick up an undercover cop along the way, and she busts them for possession. While the newly proclaimed "OG" Bobby Johnson is being interrogated by the police, his fingerprints match the prints on the silencer and the gun he used to kill Genie Lamp. He takes the blame for everything and doesn't drop any names of the other members of the Deuce gang. Due to that he has to serve a decade in prison. There he finds from Loco, and old Deuce friend, that his own son was becoming a Deuce and that he was stealing stereos for Ray Ray, the leader of the Deuce gang. The rest of the movie is centered around Bobby trying to get his son out of the gang life and keeping him from making the same mistakes he did. Can Bobby convince his son that being in a gang is not worth the price you pay? Or is it too late for Jimmie (His son's name) to get out of his lifestyle?

The acting is OK, but not too memorable. Glenn Plummer, who also played Parnell is Menace II Society, did an excellent job as OG Bobby Johnson. Christian Coleman as Jimmie "J-Rock" Johnson did an exceptional job for a child actor, but at times it seems as if he kinda overacts a lil bit. At some scenes he's a little bit too enthusiastic with his dialogue (I don't know maybe they wanted it to be like that). Larita Shelby as Bobby's girlfriend Carol was exceptional as well, but she kinda overacted too. However, at the parts where she was messed up on PCP and at the times when she was pissed the acting came through quite well. Byron Minns did a great job as Ray Ray. I feel he captured the character pretty well. Overall I'd say the acting was decent, I've seen better but I've definitely seen worse.

So, I'd say if you're a fan of hood movies or gangster movies this would appeal to you. Don't expect the greatness of Juice or Boyz or Menace though. But this is highly entertaining and definitely worth a rent, and even a buy because you can probably buy it very cheap now (I bought it at my local Best Buy for 5.99). Now that I think about it though, you probably won't find it in video stores, so I'd say find a month when it's coming on BET to see if you like it. BET plays it from time to time. I would check it out if these types of movies interest you. It's good for its genre. 4 Stars.

3 out of 5 stars IT'S WORTH WATCHING.......2003-12-18

A GANG MEMBER [GLENN PLUMMER] ENDS UP IN JAIL FOR A DECADE. AFTER CHANGING HIS WAYS IN JAIL, HE GETS PAROLED AND NOW HE MUST STOP HIS SON FROM MAKING THE SAME MISTAKES HE MADE. NOT AS EFFECTIVE AS ''BOYZ N THE HOOD'' OR ''MENACE II SOCIETY', BUT IT'S AN OK HOOD MOVIE. GLENN PLUMMER DOES A GOOD JOB PORTRAYING THE REFORMED GANG MEMBER IN THIS MOVIE. IT'S WORTH A WATCH. FANS OF HOOD MOVIES SHOULD LIKE THIS.

The 2003 Friars Club-style roast of actor-comedian Denis Leary was the highest-rated program in the history of the Comedy Central network (after South Park) thanks to its barrage of raunchy and frequently hilarious routines from top comics and Hollywood stars. Leary himself produced this special (the first of several proposed for the network), which was taped at New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom, and good-naturedly withstands a salty "tribute" from fellow stand-ups Jeff Garlin (who also handles host duties), Colin Quinn, Mario Cantone, and Lenny Clarke, among others. Jon Stewart, Conan O'Brien, and Christopher Walken also weigh in via videotape, and Leary's fellow Emerson College alumnus Gina Gershon contributes a Broadway/burlesque musical number. At 90 minutes, the jokes come fast and furious, and bear up to repeated viewings for Leary fans and those looking for comedy with some bite. --Paul Gaita

Description

COMEDY CENTRAL's ROAST OF DENIS LEARY bid adieu to the formal black tie, dais and orchestra. The celebrity-studded event took place at The Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City and featured Roasters Mario Cantone, Lenny Clarke, Dane Cook, Nick DiPaolo, Doctor Dre & Ed Lover, Adam Ferrara, Gilbert Gottfried, Colin Quinn and host Jeff Garlin. In addition to the Roasters that ripped Leary that evening, video tributes from friends of Leary's who couldn't make the big night include Michael J. Fox, Peter Gallagher, Joe Mantegna, Conan O'Brien, Rene Russo, Jon Stewart and Christopher Walken.

5 out of 5 stars Dennis Leary does it again!!.......2007-03-23

Dennis leary at his best. This is the best comedy DVD ever. If you like Dennis Leary you will love this DVD!!

3 out of 5 stars Too Expensive.......2006-02-09

NOt that much on the DVD, totally not worth the price even with it being bundled with the stand up DVD.

1 out of 5 stars I couldn't have been more disappointed.......2005-08-24

Spend your money on one of Leary's performances, not this painfully unfunny waste of 90 minutes. If you've ever watched a comedian struggle mightily to be funny and fail, you know the sort of discomfort I felt when watching these no-names flail on stage. It's telling that the only names of consequence--Stewart and Leary's cousin O'Brien--literally phoned it in. A typically awkward detail: the director cuts away to Keifer Sutherland reaction shots maybe a dozen times, like he's the President at the Lincoln Center Honors or something. It's utterly bizarre. Leary deserved better. I spent the whole time wishing I were watching him do standup--instead of watching him watch his inferiors. His brief closing remarks are amusing enough, but it's too little too late.

There's nothing like a violent, foul-mouthed, drug-laden, misogynistic, post-adolescent gangsta fantasy to teach you (heh heh) that crime doesn't pay. Whassup with Never Die Alone, bro? Here's a pulp-driven movie that wants it both ways, glorifying virtually every negative black-male stereotype in the book (illiterates with absentee parents, gold-toothed pimps, hooded gangstas, bling-bling drug dealers, thugs, and assorted hip-hop wannabes) while presenting a gritty neo-noir crime story of an ill-fated heroin dealer and woman-hater (rapper-turned-bad-actor DMX) who seeks redemption but has too much bad karma to survive. Based on the influential 1974 novel by Donald Goines and directed with plenty of dark-city style by Ernest R. Dickerson, this hard-hitting but woefully trashy crime thriller is rather ambitious in its narrative structure, weaving past and present in telling a doomed man's tale. David Arquette brings urgent desperation to his role as a seedy writer whose inner-city research turns into a violent nightmare, and Michael Ealy is equally good as a vengeful gangsta with blood ties to DMX's character. But what's the real lesson here? In a movie with no moral compass, it's no wonder everyone's spinning off in all the wrong directions. --Jeff Shannon

Description

DMX (Cradle 2 the Grave, Exit Wounds) will blow you away as King David, a cunning and charismatic leader of the streets who returns to his home turf seeking redemption... but finds only brutal retribution. Co-starring David Arquette (Scream 1, 2 & 3) as an aspiring reporter, seduced by a culture of drugs and violence, NEVER DIE ALONE is a ?gritty, intense and unforgettable urban tale? (Wireless Magazine) of ruthless gangsters and cold-blooded revenge.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Brudal and a bit shocking.......2007-01-26

DMX stars as the drug dealer King David, who pops up in the streets again after a long absence. Rolling into the frame in a player's classic - a late 70's Stutz Blackhawk - King David shrugs his way back into the hard-knock life. He quickly reaps what he sows and, mortally wounded, passes all his worldly goods to Paul (David Arquette), a scrambling white would-be writer. King David's estate includes an audio journal of his life, which provides flashbacks and a narrative-within-a-narrative that answers the shaken Paul's curiosity. It's the highlights of King David's high life that propel "Alone."

Like all of Goines's heroes, King David is a scourge on the periphery, and the movie dramatizes his corrosive effect on the margins with savvy muscularity. Every life he touches he leaves in ruins - a need to deface beauty as a result of self-loathing is implicit, and DMX signals that motivation with sly hostility.

To say that King David is the best part he's ever had is an understatement; he has never felt the need to inhabit a movie in this way before.

I would recomed this to anyone who likes the hip hop lifestyle or music and for anyone who like films with a twist.

5 out of 5 stars Harsh Reality.......2006-08-19

Movie started out cheesy with jewish writer trying to get "real" by living in slums and getting close to black culture. Other than the poorly acted writer role, the rest of the movie is similar to what happens in ghettos all over America. Very good, if you are interested in social work, psychology. Dont bother to scare your kids with this one; in fact, it would probably encourage them.

4 out of 5 stars Just Ok.......2006-07-25

the movie really did not have a complete story line....the acting was ok, I was expecting more.

5 out of 5 stars Lesson to be learned!.......2006-02-18

DMX was excellent in this movie and I think all young ladies between the age of 13 to 25 yrs. of age should see this movie. Even though it is just a movie - it can and does happen to our young women everyday - they are exploited and introduced to drugs and worse by someone whom they love and trust...

2 out of 5 stars Quote for Never Die Alone.......2005-10-22

Theres ups and downs in this movie. To me mostly downs.
When I first seen it in theaters i loved it. So when I

DMX abusing 3 women by getting them addicted to coke and heroin.
And him abusing his own son, what is wrong with that man.
I think this movie make X alot Crazyer.I wouldn't reccommend

Michelle S.

Mario Van Peebles directed as well as starred in this ham-fisted, 1993 Western with a predominantly African American cast. The story finds a posse of black shooters (with one white member, played by Stephen Baldwin) taking on a racist sheriff and military man, but Van Peebles's effort at mixing convention with hip credentials gets pretty grating. (Tone Loc makes the worst cowboy in film history.) The film is also incredibly sexist, going well beyond the usual frontier-floozy clichés and lapsing into the sort of blatant exploitation one found at that time in rap-music videos. There are lots of cameo appearances from familiar folks willing to support Van Peebles on a project that probably sounded like a mix of experiment and event--Pam Grier, Isaac Hayes, Woody Strode, and the director's father, Melvin Van Peebles. But even they can't help. --Tom Keogh

    Description

Mario Van Peebles (Judgment Day), Billy Zane (Titanic) and Stephen Baldwin (Fled) shake up the frontier in this "fast-paced, star-studded, big brawny western" (Janet Maslin, The New York Times)! Filled with gun-blazing, fist-pounding action and co-starring Big Daddy Kane, Blair Underwood, Tone Loc, Pam Grier, Isaac Hayes, Nipsey Russell, Aaron Neville and more, Posse takes a page missing from the history books Â- and unfolds it with suspense, humor and awe-inspiring power! In 1892, a group of mostly black infantrymen, betrayed by their white commander, Colonel Graham (Zane), desert the Spanish-American War. With Graham hot on their trail, Jessie Lee (Van Peebles) leads the men to his hometown, Freemanville, only to find it's also besieged by war Â- a racist war! Lee's attempts to bring justice and freedom to his people make for a brilliant western that's short on words and long on "killer entertainment" (Los Angeles Times)!

    5 out of 5 stars Izola's Movie Review: Posse.......2007-03-29

This is a GREAT movie. Not only is it action-packed, it also has a great plot (drama). Mario Van Peeples is perfect for his role.......it was a shocker that Big Daddy Kane could act. It is good to see a Western with African-Americans in it as not all African-Americans were slaves. This is also a good film to add to any movie collection.

5 out of 5 stars 5 For Trying To Set The Record Straight.......2006-11-08

For attempting to set the record straight, this film deserves 5 stars. There were towns like the 'dream town' in this movie. Ex-slaves did settle among the Native Americans. And white men did try to steal the land when they felt it had value. Many forget there were Black soldiers who acquitted themselves well in the Spanish American war. This film tries to put a bit of all of this in, and at the same time, tell a story that will keep our attention. Mario, you did well, and I am honored to own this movie. Remember, a movie is only there to tell a story. And I enjoyed Tone Loc, Big Daddy Kane, Tiny Lister, Stephen Baldwin, Mario Van Peebles and the little guy whose name I can't recall at the moment. And, the townspeople? What a colorful group. The scene when they pass the road gang, and you hear the mournful voice of Aaron Neville, absolutely heart tugging. The New Orleans scene? Envigorating. But, why did Father Time have to die. Why did any of the Posse have to die? I would have liked to see them ride again. 'Jesse, they killed Angel'

4 out of 5 stars A popcorn movie that teaches. We need more like this........2003-12-27

Mario Van Peebles "Posse" is a movie with flaws, but it treats its source material with respect. Unlike the shallow and silly "Rosewood" Van Peebles "Posse" gives viewers a clear picture of what life was like for African-American cowboys at the turn of the century. We get to know characters in the story. The production values are low budget, and several roles are miscast, but Van Peebles' heart is in every second of this film. He loves the material and wants us to learn as much about these forgotten black heroes as he has. Part "spaghetti western", part action flick, part historical drama, Posse is a lot of fun to watch. Mario Van Peebles, Billy Zane, Melvin Van Peebles and Salli Richardson in her first role are great. Tis one is worth owining for your collection.

3 out of 5 stars Better than the "editorial review" thinks it is.......2002-10-15

Tom Keogh, whomever he may be, is quite mistaken about the quality of Mario Van Peebles film, which is somewhat more than simply a "black western." Despite the "camp" appearances of several black celebrities, Peebles brings to the film an arresting visual quality and an iconoclastic, unmistakably "dark" [no pun intended] perspective on How the West Was Lost, which is one of the biggest tragedies of American history. The historical background is suitably complex, tieing in references to the Spanish-American War. Although the lead character's gunslinging talents are made too much of, this is far from cliche.

5 out of 5 stars Brings Old West Back to Life.......2002-05-04

Mario Van Peebles Posse' brought a new perspective about the west. This was the first western in many years to feature a predominately African-American cast. Stephen Baldwin was great in his potrayal of Lil' Jay. Very educational movie.
