Hairless, gaunt, and pallid, the title character of Noi is an Icelandic slacker, a smart but alienated high school boy with a boozing dad and meager prospects. His small-town life brightens a bit when he meets Iris, the daughter of a local bookstore owner, who's vacationing from the city. For their first date, they break into a museum and kiss in front of a taxidermed polar bear. But Noi's life continues its downward turn; he's expelled from school and gets a job as a gravedigger, prompting a desperate gesture. Noi is sort of a collision between Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Scandinavian nihilism (the bookstore owner quotes the dour philosopher Kierkegaard). Fortunately, the bleak events are carried out with skewed humor and sly visual flair. The restlessness and despair of adolescence are captured with honesty and sympathy. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but too much in love with its own quirkiness.......2007-04-14

This film from Iceland is about a 17-year old Albino called Noi (played by an actor who doesn't look either like an albino or a 17 year old) living on an oppresively dull small town in an isolated fjord. Noi, meanwhile, has problems in school, has problems with his parents, hangs out in a bookstore (the town's only, presumably) owned by a cranky old man and is in love with the beautiful waitress of the bar in the gas station. The movie itself is sort of interesting, has droll humor to spare, but at the end, seems to be too much in love with its own quirkiness. And, what should we make of the fact that (SPOILER ALERT: DON'T READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T YET SEEN THE MOVIE AND PLAN TO WATCH IT) most of the people Noi cares for die at the end as a result of an avalanche.

4 out of 5 stars "Your lack of discipline and respect for this institution is appalling.".......2007-04-13

If you are interested in Icelandic film, then add "Noi" to the list of those to watch. Noi (Tomas Lemarquis) is a 17-year-old boy who lives with his grandmother in a remote Icelandic fjord. He sometimes attends high school, and when he does, he turns in blank test papers and sleeps through his French lesson. Noi establishes a daily routine of mild rebellion in which he skips school and hangs out with a Kierkegaard-bashing bookshop owner.

Noi meets Iris (Elin Hansdottir) a girl who works at a local petrol station, and it looks as though Noi's life may be improving, but instead, daily boredom and hopelessness finally push Noi to the brink of a bigger rebellion.

One of the reasons "Noi" is so very interesting is the way in which the film emphasizes the influence of climate on behaviour and mental stability. Even Noi's albino complexion seems to be the result of living in this frozen landscape. The oppressive silent blanket of snow and ice doesn't make life impossible, but it does make it extremely difficult--and the simplest things become monumental tasks. Noi even has to dig his way out of his front door, and at one point Noi tries to meet Iris outside, but it's freezing cold, so they are forced to take shelter. But apart from the rather obvious physical effects of the ice and snow, the climate seems to permeate the brains of the people around Noi. They exist in various states of despair and hopelessness. Humour and even the ability to experience joy or excitement are entirely absent in these people's lives. Instead the Icelandic villagers drearily huddle in their homes and entertain themselves with jigsaw puzzles or board games. Noi, in many ways, seems to be the only person in the village who realises that life there is not acceptable, and his rebellion--his attempts to escape--are manifestations of that desperate realisation.

"Noi" presents a bleak depiction of everyday life, yet the film cleverly tempers this with touches of bleak, dark humour. If you enjoy Icelandic film, I also recommend "Reykjavik 101" and "The Seagull's Laughter." Directed by Dagur Kari, the film is in Icelandic with English subtitles--displacedhuman

5 out of 5 stars Exploring Remote Behavior in One of the Remotest Parts of the World.......2006-08-22

Noi is a seventeen year old teenager who lives with his grandmother. He is rebellious on a personal level regarding school and his personal habits, he smokes and drinks. He is not exactly disrespectful but simply is an individual who follows his own inclinations which has a tendency to get him into trouble. The fjord in Iceland where he lives is limited ... His father is an alcoholic and there is no background given regarding his mother. The film contrasts the stark cold climate in which he lives with the emotional disconnection he feels on the whole about life. Noi feels constrained, he wants something else but does not see a way out. The film explores his personal behavior and how it affects those around him ... It is a deep and haunting film which has an unexpected shake-up type ending. However the ending is open-ended. It leaves the viewer hanging, to ponder how Noi may use the experience to grow into maturity and adulthood or it may be the curve which drives him into the depths of despair. Whichever path he chooses, the event which happened will seriously affect him for the remainder of his life ...

Before this disastrous event, he challenges authority and gets involved with petty crime. He meets an attractive girl named Iris, who is visiting her father from the south of Iceland. It seems she needs to get away from city life according to her father. She jokes about wanting to leave Iceland and explore the world. Noi takes her litterally, walking together one night, he breaks the glass door to the local museum where they nearly get caught by the guards. They find an interactive map which lets them see what different parts of the world are like ... After this date, he buys new clothes, steals a car, and goes to meet Iris, challenging her to make a break with him. She sees the absurdity of this action and can't believe he took her seriously ... His brother bails him out of jail ... Prior to this, he was expelled from school for playing hookey too often. Just when it seems Noi has reached the end of his rope, a turning point, disaster strikes, his world is shaken up and nearly destroyed. This is a haunting and existential film which explores the depths of one lonely teenager's life ... and makes him face the realities of life. Erika Borsos [pepper flower]

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-05-20

This is an amazing film. Honestly, one of the greatest films I have ever seen before, a must buy.

4 out of 5 stars See the Rainbow Hanging Low.......2005-10-09

Noi the Albino (Dagur Kari, 2003)

This film has a most unexpected deus-ex-machina--an avalanche. One of the most helpless endings I've watched in my entire life. The story takes place in a remote town in the north of Iceland. The sense of desolation is simply overwhelming. The mountain from the beginning looms ominous. Seventeen year old Noi live within a very small network of people. He is loved, but he is lost. No wonder. There is not much future imaginable in this town.

He rejects school, he rejects work. A desire for evasion is secretly burning but without consequences. When he finally tries to do something, he fails. And on that night, his entire "community" is destroyed. He is left with a toy viewer through which he dreams of Hawai'i. The end.

Oh, but Iceland. How can I not be intrigued by the country. I'll be there one day. One day, si dios quiere!

One thing of special interest. The rainbow hangs very LOW in Iceland.

Poor quality DVD image. But it is a nice and unusual role for Michael Landon. His fans will enjoy the movie. I did!

1 out of 5 stars In Landon's line.......2005-09-18

A real story of a journalist living in Laos that clandestinely pass photographs showing evidences of violation of human rights in his country, to his contacts abroad.
He fall in love with a native woman that help him.
The love theme is beautiful and the country exotic.
Good acting and nice supporting cast.

This DVD edition is unacceptable. The image is worse than any videotape and the sound is extremely unpleasant. For this reason I rate it only one star.

3 out of 5 stars This movie is based in a real life event.......2001-06-09

This is the story of a foreign journalist who returns to Laos to rescue the woman he loves and was forced to leave behind. He had been in prison and tortured by the Communist regime one year earlier, convicted of being a spy, but he is willing to risk his life to get reunited with his true love. The story is beautiful but I must say the movie is kind of slow. However, it's worth it. Michael Landon is the main character and he is an excellent actor.

              Product Description

"Italy released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. LANGUAGES: Italian (Dolby Digital 5.1), English (Dolby Digital 2.0), Italian (Dolby Digital 2.0), SYNOPSIS: It's hard to explain the sublimity of We Are Angels. It's even hard to describe the films, of which there are six (or possibly seven). The money is in a briefcase hidden within one of the huge cardboard drums stacked in the warehouse of the Medina Ecological Center (a mobster's front). Which one? A close-up reveals the sign on one of the drums, filling the screen: a scrawled heart with Lupita inside it. Orso (Bud Spencer) and Zack (Philip Michael Thomas) have escaped from a Costa Rican prison and are disguised as monks (Deodato is a poet and has read René Char, presumably: ""Poesy will always be pre-eminently an escape, jail broken and assurance that that escape in long and murderous strides has succeeded.""). They're walking along a careless street when hoods accost them in broad daylight, leading to a kung fu fight. Ostentatiously pretty girls are a temptation to resist, for the nonce. The little steamboat on the jungle river is twice the size of the African Queen (two stacks, two decks). An airplane mechanic roars out of his hangar in an antique roadster, crashes and flies through the air, landing in a series of handflips, with a pithy remark at the last. They rob a bank and encounter the joke from Cassavetes' Big Trouble. The leader of the revolutionaries is named Napoleon, and wears a red beret and red epaulettes. Don Medina (Marc Macaulay) has a mean kick in his business suit. The technique is direct and straightforward (Deodato began with Rossellini). Zest and Italian New Wave comedy define the parameters. SPECIAL FEATURES: Scene Access, Interactive Menu, 2-DVD Set, "
