Molly Shannon, the latest Saturday Night Live comic to have a movie built around her, isn't exactly funny--in fact, she's a little unsettling. Her creation, the neurotic Catholic schoolgirl Mary Katherine Gallagher, invites laughter because she's a little too close to the bone for anyone who grew up feeling ugly and unloved, which is a lot of people. Mary lives with her grandmother (Glynis Johns), who insists that Mary study business. Mary herself yearns to be famous and admired, though for what isn't exactly clear; she envisions some vague combination of singing, dancing, and acting that will make her a superstar. A talent show promises to be her ticket to stardom (the winning prize is a role in "a movie with positive moral values"), and she won't let her loser status or any hostile cheerleaders stand in her way. Meanwhile, Mary acts out dating fantasies with trees and signposts, envisions the school lunch room bursting into a Fame-like dance number, and longs for the biggest jock in school. What makes Superstar more than just a collection of bad high school memories is that, though the formulaic plot redeems Mary, the movie as a whole isn't so sure. Mary completely loses herself in her obsessive fantasies--many inspired by cheesy made-for-TV movies--but there's always someone watching, aghast, as Mary acts out her inner thoughts. Is she misunderstood or freakish? Superstar never commits to one side or the other, which makes it both comic and uncomfortable. --Bret Fetzer

Ted Neeley makes for a wimpy looking Jesus in Norman Jewison's screen adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice "rock opera," which was a smash on stage in the early '70s. Jewison (Other People's Money) adds some good exterior settings in the desert, but Lloyd Webber and Rice's dialogue-free story (everything is sung, as in a real opera), with its quasi-profundities about the inner demons of principal figures in the life of Christ, is the real hook. Yvonne Elliman sings the show's best-known song, "I Don't Know How to Love Him." --Tom KeoghCustomer Reviews:

Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson--dark, wiry, and tense meets blond, lanky, and loose--make a solid comic team (and previously appeared together in Zoolander), but the funniest man in Starsky and Hutch is Vince Vaughn. Vaughn dives into his role as a sleazy drug dealer (who nonetheless buys a pony for his daughter's bat mitzvah) with the offhand zest that he brings to almost every role (from Swingers to Old School) and effortlessly steals every scene he's in. Vaughn has concocted a new and undetectable kind of cocaine, and only two cops who aren't afraid to break the rules--our titular pair--can catch him. But the plot isn't the point; mocking-yet-loving jabs at the '70s, including the homoerotic overtones of Starsky and Hutch's partnership, are what this movie is about. The satire is surprisingly mild but entertaining nonetheless, particularly when Vaughn or Snoop Dogg (as informant Huggy Bear) hold the screen. --Bret FetzerDescription

This 1970 concert documentary captures Elvis Presley midway through a fateful transition, seeking to reclaim his musical primacy after a decade of self-imposed exile from concert stages. Sidelined by his big-screen career, eclipsed by rock's mid-'60s transformations, the King had begun his return two years earlier with the relatively lean attack of his fabled network television appearance, '68 Comeback Special. Now the Memphis legend was poised to reposition his performing profile by pursuing the top rungs of headliner status in Las Vegas, a career choice that seems even more ephemeral in hindsight than it already did at the time.Elvis: That's the Way It Is follows the show's genesis from rehearsal to stage, with the performance footage that provides its inevitable climax shot over six nights. The rehearsal footage, expanded for this special edition, offers further proof that Presley's band was simply superb: stripped of the orchestrations and lush choral arrangements that would be grafted onto the stage show, the sextet sounds both tough and nimble. In performance, we're treated to a mostly riveting glimpse of Presley in top vocal form, poised at the brink of bombast. This is Elvis before the onset of portentous Richard Strauss overtures, karate kicks, and tossed scarves, kicking off the show with the classic "That's All Right." If he risks undercutting the punch of his early songs with self-deprecating clowning, he attacks two Ray Charles classics with gusto. The special edition also boasts digitally remastered visuals, crisply remixed Dolby audio, alternate versions that replace the original performances of several tracks (including the extended vamp of "Suspicious Minds"), a theatrical trailer, and a new documentary on the restoration of the film. --Sam Sutherland

Better than an all-day pit pass, Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Any Given Day offers an all-access invitation to a week in the life of NASCAR's reigning superstar. For fans of "Little E," this professionally made home movie is Jr.'s way of saying "thanks for your support" while giving those same fans an idea of how challenging fame can be when you're the heir to NASCAR royalty. Without a single mention of Dale Sr.'s fatal accident in 2001, it's clear that Jr. bears the burden of his father's racing legacy, added to the punishing demands of an exhausting public-appearance schedule, boring photo sessions and TV commercial shoots, practice and qualifying runs, and weekends devoted to pursuing the Winston (now Nextel) Cup championship. And yet, this day-by-day video journal also shows Jr. enjoying the prime of his life, kickin' back or hunting with his buds (the "Dirty Mo Posse"), hangin' with his shop crew, getting fitted for expensive suits, or relishing a tour of his new and secretly located home in North Carolina. Oh, yeah... there's also some NASCAR action, including Jr.'s win at the Checkers Auto Parts 500 (Nov. 2, 3003) and loss to Michael Waltip at Talladega. Overall, however, Any Given Day is a revealing look at the pros and cons of fame and fortune, with Dale Jr. keeping it real in a whirlwind of high-speed living. Even if you're not a fan, it's a behind-the-scenes NASCAR portrait you won't want to miss. --Jeff ShannonProduct Description
Dale Earnhardt Jr: Any Given Day is a whirlwind trip through a small slice in the frantic life of NASCAR's most electric name. Get to know his friends and crew as he takes us behind doors that cameras have never before dared to open. Along the way, sit down with the man as he talks with you, the fan, one-on-one about life on and off the track.Customer Reviews:

A slight but charming romantic comedy, The Seat Filler stars Duane Martin (Scream 2, Above the Rim) as Derrick, a young man struggling to make ends meet as he studies for the bar exam. To make some extra cash, Derrick takes a job as a "seat filler"--a person who hops into an unoccupied chair at a televised awards show to make attendance look perpetually full. At one event, Derrick happens to be seated next to recording star Jhnelle (Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child), and breaks one of the cardinal rules of seat-filling: he starts a conversation. Things click, and soon Derrick's small fibs become major lies as he tries to sustain the mutual romantic attraction. From there the movie travels in mostly expected directions, but it's quite funny, especially spiked with the manic antics of Derrick's best friend, E.J. (DeRay Davis). The Seat Filler is the initial entry in a new way of distributing films called the Momentum Experience. Instead of traditional movie-distribution deals, the Momentum Experience presents African American-themed movies in non-traditional venues, preceded by live music and comedy. The Seat Filler isn't a movie that will change the world, but the Momentum Experience may in a small way change an industry. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:

Before Andrew Lloyd Webber took over Broadway with his operatic productions and Tim Rice tossed in his lot with Disney's animated musicals, they were the young turks of musical theater and their rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar was their calling card. Director Gale Edwards's 1999 stage revival, which became the basis for this video production (also available on CD), takes the show out of ancient Jerusalem to an indeterminate mix of modern New York (complete with graffiti-scrawled walls and T-shirt garbed disciples) and timeless Rome. The grandly abstract sets, rainbow lighting, and striking costumes are more theater than cinema, but like the previous made-for-video Lloyd Webber-Rice production Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the enormous soundstages give the director free reign to combine the mediums. The setting folds fascism, intolerance, and revolution into a portrait out of time, robbing the play of its powerful historical grounding but injecting it with energy and insight. As Christ, Glenn Carter (who played the role in the 2000 Broadway revival) flashes his anger and rolls his eyes at Judas (Jerome Pradon) but cannot deny the truths of Judas's fears: "Every word you say today gets twisted 'round some other way." As Christ sees his cult of personality overtake his message and struggles with the fears of his sacrifice, he reaches within for faith and forgiveness, giving the show the spiritual dimension it so often lacks.
It's an entertaining, thoughtful, and well-sung production. Edwards avoids the tepidity of Norman Jewison's solemn 1973 film, driving forward with energetic editing and swooping cameras, and guided at all times by the dramatic, exhilarating score. --Sean Axmaker
Description
A brand-new production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice classic musical, "Jesus Christ Superstar" tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus. It describes his entry into Jerusalem, the enmity that his preaching and his popularity causes among the Jewish religious leaders, his betrayal by Judas, mocking contempt of Herod, and the trial in front of Pontius Pilate, who despite his sympathy towards Jesus as a person, bows to the demands of Caiaphas, the Chief Priest, and has him crucified.Customer Reviews:
