Molly Shannon, the latest Saturday Night Live comic to have a movie built around her, isn't exactly funny--in fact, she's a little unsettling. Her creation, the neurotic Catholic schoolgirl Mary Katherine Gallagher, invites laughter because she's a little too close to the bone for anyone who grew up feeling ugly and unloved, which is a lot of people. Mary lives with her grandmother (Glynis Johns), who insists that Mary study business. Mary herself yearns to be famous and admired, though for what isn't exactly clear; she envisions some vague combination of singing, dancing, and acting that will make her a superstar. A talent show promises to be her ticket to stardom (the winning prize is a role in "a movie with positive moral values"), and she won't let her loser status or any hostile cheerleaders stand in her way. Meanwhile, Mary acts out dating fantasies with trees and signposts, envisions the school lunch room bursting into a Fame-like dance number, and longs for the biggest jock in school. What makes Superstar more than just a collection of bad high school memories is that, though the formulaic plot redeems Mary, the movie as a whole isn't so sure. Mary completely loses herself in her obsessive fantasies--many inspired by cheesy made-for-TV movies--but there's always someone watching, aghast, as Mary acts out her inner thoughts. Is she misunderstood or freakish? Superstar never commits to one side or the other, which makes it both comic and uncomfortable. --Bret Fetzer

Ted Neeley makes for a wimpy looking Jesus in Norman Jewison's screen adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice "rock opera," which was a smash on stage in the early '70s. Jewison (Other People's Money) adds some good exterior settings in the desert, but Lloyd Webber and Rice's dialogue-free story (everything is sung, as in a real opera), with its quasi-profundities about the inner demons of principal figures in the life of Christ, is the real hook. Yvonne Elliman sings the show's best-known song, "I Don't Know How to Love Him." --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Christianity Meets Rock & Roll. Does It Get Any Better?.......2007-07-03

I have loved this movie ever since I first saw it in the theater oh so many years ago. And it gets better with age. If you have not seen this movie and have even the slightest inclination to do so, DO SO! I have seen Superstar live on stage several times and this movie equals those productions. Ted Neely IS Jesus Christ Superstar and the supporting cast is superb. And, of course, the music simply ROCKS! Do yourself a favor and own this movie. You will find yourself watching it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Best Rock Musical Ever.......2007-07-03

First movie to be made from a 2 album Broadway soundtrack and last movie to be filmed in Todd-ao vision. This sensational movie boasts songs and lyrics of Andrew Llyod Webber and Tim Rice, and incredible musical execution by Ted Neeley, Carl Andersen and a host of others. Ted Neeley protrays the most believable Jesus ever. Movie was filmed on location in the Holy Land and has some of the most stark, miminalist and beautiful scenery ever used. Coomentary by Director Norman Jewison and Ted Neeley is fascinating, and recounts many unexplicable events that occurred while movie was being made. Should have definitely been included in AFI's top 100 films.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-06-27

This edition is exactly the way i remembered it. I was inspired to purchase this after seeing Ted Neeley live. Believe me.........he still has it. Returning to the movie brought back found memories of this old favorite. The music is timeless.

5 out of 5 stars For the Ages.......2007-06-04

This one is for the ages. I first heard the "brown album" as a teen and was blown away by every character except for the Jesus character. Then I saw this movie. Wow! Mr. Neeley's performance certainly brought that character to life. It ignited a passion in me which is still with me today. You could say that it was this movie and Mr. Neeley's performance that awakened my slumbering spirituality. It is wonderful!

Don't miss the commentary. Mr. Jewison is especially endearing when, even after 30 years, he still seems scandalized by his actors' dismissal of his warnings to be careful on dangerous sets. Most DVDs offer extras but this commentary by Mr. Jewison and Mr. Neeley went far beyond what an audience could expect. It was a simple, generous offering. It is a gift.

5 out of 5 stars JC Superstar revisited.......2007-05-30

I saw the movie originally when I was in college and was moved by it. My daughter and I just saw Ted Neeley's farewell tour of JC, so I bought this for her 13th birthday. She loves it.

Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson--dark, wiry, and tense meets blond, lanky, and loose--make a solid comic team (and previously appeared together in Zoolander), but the funniest man in Starsky and Hutch is Vince Vaughn. Vaughn dives into his role as a sleazy drug dealer (who nonetheless buys a pony for his daughter's bat mitzvah) with the offhand zest that he brings to almost every role (from Swingers to Old School) and effortlessly steals every scene he's in. Vaughn has concocted a new and undetectable kind of cocaine, and only two cops who aren't afraid to break the rules--our titular pair--can catch him. But the plot isn't the point; mocking-yet-loving jabs at the '70s, including the homoerotic overtones of Starsky and Hutch's partnership, are what this movie is about. The satire is surprisingly mild but entertaining nonetheless, particularly when Vaughn or Snoop Dogg (as informant Huggy Bear) hold the screen. --Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars Wow, was I in for a treat when I watched this gem!!!.......2007-06-17

Big screen remakes of 70's sitcoms have given us "modern kids" a chance to enjoy some bellbottom antics that we otherwise would have missed out on. With a star-studded cast lead by Ben Stiller (Starsky) and Owen Wilson (Hutch), this film calls to all who are ready to be launched into ha-ha arcadia.
The stage is set right after you are introduced to the dynamic duo. Stiller is an uptight cop who serves the law to the utmost. Wilson is a laid back cop who just wants to take it easy. Let's pair them together! Holy, freaking-f! Where did they get that idea? It's awesome!
As the film builds up momentum with a prodigious and inexhaustible stream of jokes we meet Huggy Bear played by rapper Snoop Dogg. Why isn't this man in more movies? His acting is absolutely awe-inspiring (except that it is bad and I don't care for it much at all). In the 90's he popularized the alcoholic drink "gin and juice" and taught us that "endo" is the best marijuana to smoke. Now, in 2004, he is stupefying audiences with his rigmarole on the big screen. Boy how the times change. Speaking of change, let's not forget the antagonist, a villainous drug dealer named Reese Feldman, played by Vince Vaughn. Let me tell you straight up: this is not the Vaughn of old. Long gone is the quick-witted fun time swinger who gave a fairly decent vocabulary base to a generation of young hipsters. To make sure you're not confused, the character displays his wrathfulness early so you don't cry when/if he gets busted. How? One, he has a moustache. Two, he kills guys that loose his coke and doesn't even care about it. Three, he never says "that's money," "hey, you are money tonight," or "sexy babies for me and for you that are money." F that guy! I kept thinking throughout the whole film: you are sooooo busted in 70 minutes. So what about the plot? Basically, Starsky and Hutch somehow must find the bad guy through a tangled web of ridiculous humor, mishaps and total babes. If you were smart enough to figure out how to operate the DVD player you can see the jokes coming from a mile away. The real mystery I'll leave you with is this; can the two cops see through their differences to form a law enforcement juggernaut (like Robocop but with less buffoonery) and a possible lasting friendship in 90 minutes?
On a personal level after seeing this film I really wished that Owen Wilson was my bro, that guy would be awesome to do the "what's up" thing with.
Modern day filmmakers have somehow managed to take their non-creativity to a whole new level, much the same as Puff Diddy does with music. If you have lost your creative go ahead and take an idea that has already been done, inject a bunch of your own non-creative and you will have teens and adults alike reiterating phrases like "do it, do it" until the Knight Rider movie comes out. I personally can't wait till I'm 40 and I see the remake of Wayne's World.
Grade D+; wait to spend your money on the remake of Wayne's World (hopefully staring our friend Wayne).

5 out of 5 stars Hillarious!!!.......2007-05-13

This movie is so funny!!! This is my second copy because one of "thieverous" (yes, I know that's not a word) relatives stole the original. But I highly recommend this movie to anyone who hasn't seen it. The whole cast has their own style of comedy and when you bring them all together it's a lot of fun. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong here!.......2007-02-04

I don't usually like these type of movies, but this is a can't miss...you'll laugh!

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest movies to come out in the last five years!.......2006-11-09

Ben Stiller as the tough guy cop throwing the bad guys around is too much! Owen Wilson as the touchy-feely partner is the perfect compliment.
Especially if you were around for the Seventies and the original, don't miss this one. First rate comedy is so rare, this movie is a lot of fun.

3 out of 5 stars lame.......2006-11-02

I can't believe anyone liked this movie. It was boring. It wasn't funny at all. It was everything bad that I don't feel like typing.

The only good part was a scene near the end where the car... I won't spoil it. It's not like I have a problem with the actors. I just had a problem with the lack of an interesting plot and the absense of humor. What was passed off as humor did nothing for me. Hey, maybe it's me. I have the problem, I guess.

4 out of 5 stars keep 'em coming.......2007-04-26

How wonderful to see this collection of Fox CinemaScope films about to be released......lets hope they are in CinemaScope as it states a 1.33 Aspect Ratio. Many Fox releases in the past have stated this but when I purchased some they were in CinemaScope. Why can't the correct Aspect Ration be listed please.....It also states RESTORED from Video, maybe this means they are NOT CinemaScope as they would not have been on VHS. Looking forward to July. Keep 'em coming Fox.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER WONDERFUL SURPRISE.......2007-04-21

News of the planned release of five more Joan Collins films, previously unavailable on DVD, from 20th Century Fox's Golden CinemaScope era, in a suitably titled Box Collection, is truly great news for all Joan Fans around the world.(Apart from Esther and the King - where a "proper" DVD version of that one is eargerly awaited!!! Also the release of The Wayward Bus please.)

I saw all these films in the Cinema when a very young teenager in the mid to late Fifties and was drawn to this lady long before she became an International TV Icon and Celebrity. As an Actress, Producer, or talented creator of a number of intelligent books and heart-warming essays, to this day, Miss Collins still causes a rise in blood pressure and a genuine sense of "Oh, isn't she great and how nice to see her once more".

I must admit that I was drawn to her when very young, for apart from Land of the Pharoahs, way back in 1955, there was all of her earlier English films including the delightful Our Girl Friday (aka The Adventures of Sadie)plus her important presence in such earlier films as the very dramatic and to-the-point I Believe in You, Turn the Key Softly and Cosh Boy, truthfully dealing with teenage delinquency when such topics were not previously attempted. Joan provided us with an excellent performance in Cosh Boy.

Miss Collins has provided us with a feast of diverse product and entertainment, over an incredibly long and fruitful career ranging from heavy dramatics to tantalising "shockers" of the Seventies, to cheapie Horror Flicks plus adventure and comedy, for which she excels.

All of the five upcoming films were made in simpler and less "in your face" times, with clear dialogue and attention to settings and photography and casting of great supporting players. Importantly for today's viewers, all the five films are very entertaining and are of diverse genres. They all deserve a wide saturation. And here's ***** to 20th Century Fox for making a good number of us DVD fans very happy.

Funnier than you remember. Molly Shannon is great, and rarely gets this much camera time. Every once in a while you will pull it off the shelf to watch, and when you are done say, "man! that really is a good show, I should watch it more often"

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars, this movie is outrageous!!!!!!.......2007-01-19

I think that there is one movie in your life that is so funny and great, and even inspirational, although it's not your favorite, and doesn;t even live up to it, but it can be the "favorite movie you cheat on your actual favorite with." I personally think that this is that movie for me. Although it has only the theatrical trailer for extras, it is soo funny! I just can't stop talking about it. I love it!! See it! A-

5 out of 5 stars Molly Shannon SHINES as a SUPERSTAR.......2006-08-03

In this Saturday Night Live skit turned into a movie (another one), orphan Mary Katherine Gallagher (Molly Shannon) lives with her grandmother (Glynis Johns) and attends St. Monica's High School. Mary Katherine has a Dream - to be kissed by Sky Corrigan (Will Ferrell), the school's self-proclaimed best dancer. She thinks if she becomes a SUPERSTAR her prayers will be answered. With the help of her friends (also misfits) she works on winning the school talent contest. Her main competition is the popular and cute (but evil on the inside) Evian who is dating Sky. Evian is Mary Katherine's Arch-nemesis and will stop at nothing to see that Mary Katherine does not win the contest, the winner of which will be flown to Hollywood to star in a movie with positive moral values.

For an SNL skit turned movie it's surprisingly good, mostly due to Molly Shannon and a strong comedic supporting cast including Ferrel, Harland Williams, Mark McKinney and even Tom Green in a small role as student Dylan Schmultz-Plutzker. This is actually one of the few SNL movies that delivers a message as well as a laugh and proves that anyone can be a SUPERSTAR!

5 out of 5 stars A Super Surprise!.......2006-07-02

Because of my disappointment with some SNL movies (The Ladies Man, A Night at The Roxbury) I really wasn't expecting much out of Superstar. Boy was I in for a huge surprise. This movie was hillarious. It stars Molly Shannon as Mary Katherine Gallagher whose dream in life is to be kissed. Will Ferrell is also in this, which only makes the movie funnier than it already is. Mary Katherine Gallagher's actions in this movie are absolutely hillarious. I would definetely recommend this movie to anyone who wants to watch a very funny movie.

This 1970 concert documentary captures Elvis Presley midway through a fateful transition, seeking to reclaim his musical primacy after a decade of self-imposed exile from concert stages. Sidelined by his big-screen career, eclipsed by rock's mid-'60s transformations, the King had begun his return two years earlier with the relatively lean attack of his fabled network television appearance, '68 Comeback Special. Now the Memphis legend was poised to reposition his performing profile by pursuing the top rungs of headliner status in Las Vegas, a career choice that seems even more ephemeral in hindsight than it already did at the time.

Elvis: That's the Way It Is follows the show's genesis from rehearsal to stage, with the performance footage that provides its inevitable climax shot over six nights. The rehearsal footage, expanded for this special edition, offers further proof that Presley's band was simply superb: stripped of the orchestrations and lush choral arrangements that would be grafted onto the stage show, the sextet sounds both tough and nimble. In performance, we're treated to a mostly riveting glimpse of Presley in top vocal form, poised at the brink of bombast. This is Elvis before the onset of portentous Richard Strauss overtures, karate kicks, and tossed scarves, kicking off the show with the classic "That's All Right." If he risks undercutting the punch of his early songs with self-deprecating clowning, he attacks two Ray Charles classics with gusto. The special edition also boasts digitally remastered visuals, crisply remixed Dolby audio, alternate versions that replace the original performances of several tracks (including the extended vamp of "Suspicious Minds"), a theatrical trailer, and a new documentary on the restoration of the film. --Sam Sutherland

Hey, whatever happend to "I just Can't Help Believin'? This song is cut out from the concert footage. What a drawback...!
The scenes before the concert at a recording session with the guys makes up for the cut out or lost scenes. "I just can't help believin'"
Elvis, a gift from heaven and wonderful to explore his singing ability.
Elvis rocks away his inhibitions if indeed he has them.
Follow the course, watch this movie and learn.
Elvis marks your inhibitions and rejects them, they're not yours anymore.

What a character Elvis was! This dvd gives insight into the complicated person Elvis was in terms of his humor, gifts, generosity of spirit, faith, ambitions, and humanity in a person who was so talented and good looking as to be veritably worshipped by so many. Amazing he kept as self-effacing a perspective as he did. So wish the lifestyle hadn't taken him down.

If you are an Elvis fan, you will Love this DVD. If you are somewhat of an Elvis fan, you will be a bigger fan. It gives you a little look into Elvis as a person, and a lot of Elvis as a performer live in concert at the former International Hotel in Vegas. The DVD has been digitally remastered and has excellent audio and video.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Footage.......2007-02-14

This DVD gives us fans who were too young to travel in the late '60s/early '70s to Vegas to experience what Elvis's concerts were like! Amazing! I have watched this DVD over and over--even hosting wine parties with the girls and we all sit glued to the TV. I use this DVD to show the young kids in the neighborhood who Elvis really was and feel that this DVD can let the younger generation "know" ELVIS. So happy the DVD was created for myself to see the Vegas days as well as show my children why Elvis was so incredible and what Elvis was all about! Jill The Woodlands, TX

Better than an all-day pit pass, Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Any Given Day offers an all-access invitation to a week in the life of NASCAR's reigning superstar. For fans of "Little E," this professionally made home movie is Jr.'s way of saying "thanks for your support" while giving those same fans an idea of how challenging fame can be when you're the heir to NASCAR royalty. Without a single mention of Dale Sr.'s fatal accident in 2001, it's clear that Jr. bears the burden of his father's racing legacy, added to the punishing demands of an exhausting public-appearance schedule, boring photo sessions and TV commercial shoots, practice and qualifying runs, and weekends devoted to pursuing the Winston (now Nextel) Cup championship. And yet, this day-by-day video journal also shows Jr. enjoying the prime of his life, kickin' back or hunting with his buds (the "Dirty Mo Posse"), hangin' with his shop crew, getting fitted for expensive suits, or relishing a tour of his new and secretly located home in North Carolina. Oh, yeah... there's also some NASCAR action, including Jr.'s win at the Checkers Auto Parts 500 (Nov. 2, 3003) and loss to Michael Waltip at Talladega. Overall, however, Any Given Day is a revealing look at the pros and cons of fame and fortune, with Dale Jr. keeping it real in a whirlwind of high-speed living. Even if you're not a fan, it's a behind-the-scenes NASCAR portrait you won't want to miss. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Best Behind the Scenes DVD.......2007-01-19

Great DVD that gets you up close and personal with what Dale Jr does when he is not at the track. From shooting commercials to hanging out with friends, this DVD takes you through a "normal" week inside the life of Dale Jr.

4 out of 5 stars Well-done.......2005-08-26

This DVD is well thought out and executed. I like the style, it looks kind of low-budget, but I can't imagine it actually is. It is an interesting behind-the-scenes look at the demands on Nextel Cup's hottest young driver, from commercial shoots to shopping mall appearances in front of thousands of screaming fans, everyone wants a piece of Dale Jr. on and off the track. It is refreshing to see how 'normal' he is - he still hasn't completely unpacked into his new house, we follow him to a haircut and he gets bored at photo shoots. Here's hoping he stays grounded as his star continues to rise.

A slight but charming romantic comedy, The Seat Filler stars Duane Martin (Scream 2, Above the Rim) as Derrick, a young man struggling to make ends meet as he studies for the bar exam. To make some extra cash, Derrick takes a job as a "seat filler"--a person who hops into an unoccupied chair at a televised awards show to make attendance look perpetually full. At one event, Derrick happens to be seated next to recording star Jhnelle (Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child), and breaks one of the cardinal rules of seat-filling: he starts a conversation. Things click, and soon Derrick's small fibs become major lies as he tries to sustain the mutual romantic attraction. From there the movie travels in mostly expected directions, but it's quite funny, especially spiked with the manic antics of Derrick's best friend, E.J. (DeRay Davis). The Seat Filler is the initial entry in a new way of distributing films called the Momentum Experience. Instead of traditional movie-distribution deals, the Momentum Experience presents African American-themed movies in non-traditional venues, preceded by live music and comedy. The Seat Filler isn't a movie that will change the world, but the Momentum Experience may in a small way change an industry. --David Horiuchi

3 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Sweet!.......2007-07-02

I do love Kelly Rowland...I think she's gorgeous and talented. Dwayne Martin has always been a talented actor...although I wouldn't have picked him for this role. The movie started out a bit slow...I wasn't sure I would like it...but it was surprisingly good! Not oscar worthy...lol...but a good romantic comedy. Kelly Rowland's acting is not bad at all. It's certainly better than Beyonce's (ouch...she was gorgeous in Dream Girls, but her acting seriously SUCKED! after what...five movies you'd think she'd be a lot better!). Kelly surprised me...her acting started out a bit shaky, but it just progressed with each scene! Given a few more years, she could be a really good actress. The chemistry between she and Dwayne Martin kicked in about halfway through the movie...and from then on they were just a pleasure to watch. I think there could have been at least one steamy love scene...nothing too much...but just enough to make us think they got it on. But, all in all, it was a cute movie that I'd watch again and again.

5 out of 5 stars SOME SINGERS CAN REALLY ACT...........2007-02-21

Kelly Rowlands does a wonderful job portraying her character Jhnelle in this, endearing film. Duane Martin has you rooting for Derrick, because it's not hard to relate to his situation. Sometimes, it's easier to be someone else than it is to just being yourself! The chemistry between the two is sweet.

Look forward to seeing more from Ms. Rowlands in the near future, both musically and theatrically.

I highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie to watch.......2006-12-24

This movie was hilarious. Even though singing is what Kelly does on a regular basis she really put her all into this movie. The first time I saw the preview was at the Destiny's Child concert. Though it was only playing at Imax theatres in certain areas. I was upset. I was going crazy looking around for this movie. It later came DVD almost a year later. I finally found it and laughed from the begining to the end. D. Ray is silly along with Dwayne Martin. They couldnt have done better with the actors and actress's they choose for this movie. It will be money well spent....

4 out of 5 stars Cute and predictable, but fun too ;-).......2006-12-23

Kelly did a much better job here than Mariah in Glitter, but she ain't Beyonce in Dreamgirls either. She does a good job at playing a famous singer who falls in love with a guy who is a seat filler at an awards show. This gives her the perfect opportunity to let us hear her great pipes again but on a solo level. The chemistry between her and Derrick (Duane Martin who I love in All Of Us) is believable and fun and while this movie might appeal more to chicks, I think it has a wide age appeal.
I dropped a star due to the fact that it's totally predictable, but overall, this is a really cute movie that I recommend to hopeless romantics and those who want to have a laugh. (Also good for Kelly Rowland fans because there are plenty of reminders that her then new album would drop soon). I like it and hope you do too.

Before Andrew Lloyd Webber took over Broadway with his operatic productions and Tim Rice tossed in his lot with Disney's animated musicals, they were the young turks of musical theater and their rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar was their calling card. Director Gale Edwards's 1999 stage revival, which became the basis for this video production (also available on CD), takes the show out of ancient Jerusalem to an indeterminate mix of modern New York (complete with graffiti-scrawled walls and T-shirt garbed disciples) and timeless Rome. The grandly abstract sets, rainbow lighting, and striking costumes are more theater than cinema, but like the previous made-for-video Lloyd Webber-Rice production Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the enormous soundstages give the director free reign to combine the mediums.

The setting folds fascism, intolerance, and revolution into a portrait out of time, robbing the play of its powerful historical grounding but injecting it with energy and insight. As Christ, Glenn Carter (who played the role in the 2000 Broadway revival) flashes his anger and rolls his eyes at Judas (Jerome Pradon) but cannot deny the truths of Judas's fears: "Every word you say today gets twisted 'round some other way." As Christ sees his cult of personality overtake his message and struggles with the fears of his sacrifice, he reaches within for faith and forgiveness, giving the show the spiritual dimension it so often lacks.

It's an entertaining, thoughtful, and well-sung production. Edwards avoids the tepidity of Norman Jewison's solemn 1973 film, driving forward with energetic editing and swooping cameras, and guided at all times by the dramatic, exhilarating score. --Sean Axmaker

Description

A brand-new production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice classic musical, "Jesus Christ Superstar" tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus. It describes his entry into Jerusalem, the enmity that his preaching and his popularity causes among the Jewish religious leaders, his betrayal by Judas, mocking contempt of Herod, and the trial in front of Pontius Pilate, who despite his sympathy towards Jesus as a person, bows to the demands of Caiaphas, the Chief Priest, and has him crucified.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Voices!.......2007-03-19

I've seen this musical many, many times but this is THE BEST version! The men's voices are SUPERB! The directing and staging is excellent; Judas and Jesus play off of each other to create a real tension in the plot line that I have never seen in any other production. I HIGHLY recommend this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars This Is The One To See.......2006-10-30

The final week of Jesus' life makes for masterful storytelling. It's full of the agonies of deep reflection, and the hope that human existence is not without some meaning. It's got jealousy, rivalry, hate, lust, greed, torture, fear, self-doubt, and, yes, all-out betrayal of the most brutal, blood-soaked kind. Yes, the story of a vacillating Jewish mystic who was the inspiration for a major religion is great, and this version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's still-controversial 1970's musical is my favorite of the many productions I've seen. Here a nice twist comes in and takes the form of the evolution of the set and characters, as we begin with pseudo-modern-looking performers and backgrounds, and gradually over the course of the next ninety minutes everything shifts to looking like some neo-post-modernist version of Jerusalem circa 30 CE. The excellent Glenn Carter in particular takes his version of Jesus from a man who'd garner nary a sideward glance on twenty-first-century streets, thru a vaguely Greek-looking Christ, to the full-fledged Jesus of Sunday School familiarity. The cast here, mixed in ethnicity and nationality, achieves a superb synthesis of purpose and meshes together as few groups of actors do, until these individuals convincingly weave together a story that is ancient and modern, timeless, universal, and as powerful now as it was at its first telling nineteen-hundred years ago. Jesus Christ Superstar has it all: great music, outstanding performances, and a re-telling of a story that launched a change in world civilization that continues with no end in sight.

2 out of 5 stars Disappoints.......2006-08-09

The problems with the DVD production are the lead actors. Jerome Pradon is totally unsuited to the role. He might be a good actor, but when he squeaks and whines through rock numbers, it physically hurts my ears. He's best watched when he's silent. Glenn Carter made an brilliant Simon Zealotes on the 1996 recording, and I was very interested in seeing what else he had done, but he disappointed here. Not only his acting range limited, he was only moderately better than Pradon. Renee Castle sounded beautiful, but was brought down by the decision to cry at the end of 'I Don't Know How To Love Him', appearing very tacky.

Rik Mayall gave a Herod that was sleazy, attempting to be funny and dangerous, but falling flat. Tony Vincent was terrific, in almost-mad devotion to the "cause". I keep hoping that the presence of the ever-amazing Mykal Rand as a random apostle is worth the money I paid for the DVD.

The 're-imagining' of the show turns it into the bubble-gum pop, totally unsuitable to the plot. It seems very fake, attempting to be happy-go-lucky, while the story is anything but. The Romans, however, had a very interesting and intriguing look. The set was initially interesting, but after a few scenes, it got to be very repetitive. They didn't have to invest in more than one set, but using different lighting or angles would have broken up the monotony.

3 out of 5 stars Plenty of good, plenty of bad.......2006-08-09

Firstly let me say I was having sound troubles with my player, so had to listen to the whole thing on soft. From what I could hear, the vocals and music were great - plenty of quality voices - but who knows what I've missed from if I'd been able to play it louder!
The production on the other hand - euw. Started off very effectively during the opening credits, and I was very impressed with the modern imagery and had high hopes for the rest. Unfortunately it was downhill from there.

The staging was claustrophobic - running in and out of the same set got really tired after a while. Come on guys, even stage productions manage more variety than that! Crowd scenes weren't, well, crowded, which totally destroyed their impact.
The stylised imagery was cool in parts, but for the most part so fake that it destroyed any sense of the reality of the story, the tongue in cheek humour of the lyrics, and any sympathy with the characters involved.

But my main gripe with the whole thing was the horrific overacting. I don't know how to describe it, but I found it truly painful. By the end I was fast forwarding. JC was turned into a totally unlikeable wet sock who just kept giving everyone hurt angry looks interspersed with a few inexplicable smiles. Judas was pretty good, but once again, just too much acting - people aren't constantly making faces at eachother in real life! It just doesn't feel real when someone is expressing 5 different heartfelt emotions within the same 10 seconds - it looked ridiculous. Mary Magdalene played more subtly, and Herod's part required some overacting, so no complaints there. Pilate - what a waste of a great voice and soulful face - WHAT was with that acting!
I guess I should keep in mind that I'm comparing this production to 2 very recent stage productions I've seen that were fantastic, not to the old movie.

Well, maybe this is why people say there is a difference between acting for stage and TV - if these guys were stage actors, maybe on stage over acting is necessary to be noticed at all - whereas on TV (especially with all the closeups) it's horribly magnified. Just relax guys - you don't need to have a different face for every single word of a song.

5 out of 5 stars Glenn is Jesus! .......2006-07-13

this man is brilliant as Jesus. I love him. I have this soundtrack and now i'm trying to find this copy in my house so i can watch him. They say on the making of this film that he does look a little bit like Jesus, with the curly hair and bright blue eyes.Glenn, what more can i say about him. This is the most brilliant and beloved stories of all time. I love this movie. I don't think i want to the show though live. My favorite songs that he sings, i think is: The Last Supper, Hosanna, trial before Pilate and that's it (that's not a song.) Glenn is wonderful by this dvd. Bye
