5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Xfrs for BW S1 from R2.......2006-11-18

Hello, fellow Bionic fans and Amazon'ers out there :)

I highly recommend this set. The transfer quality to DVD is outstanding and fared much better than the (R2) 6M$M S1 set. All episodes are uncut (no missing scene footage). After suffering through the infamous "SciFi" / syndicated versions of this series in past years, this set's a real gold mine to own. My set plays flawlessly on my Pioneer Code-Free PAL/NTSC Converter player. There are those that can detect the PAL speed-up phenomenon compared to NTSC, but from feedback on other TV/DVD collector forums, the ability to detect the PAL speed difference will vary with the individual viewer. All I can say is that these eps are studio-quality sparkling pictures, and I can't tell the difference in this set and any other of my NTSC TV/DVD sets. If you're a BW fan, this set's a sure-thing. S1 is my personal favorite season of this series. BTW, S2 is available from R2 & R4. I have the R4 set and it's the same A+ xfr quality (and verified un-cut eps) as the S1 R2 set.

For those with interest in "Extras" in TV/DVD sets, there are none in either of the R2/4 Bionic S1/2 sets. That's unfortunate, as one that's had the privalege of meeting Lindsay Wagner recently, both Lindsay and Richard Anderson would have been happy to provide interviews, trivia for these sets. Universal is an unpredictable studio with regards to providing Extras in their TV/DVD sets but, whatever we think about Universal, their track record for using the un-cut as originally-aired episode versions in their 60's-80's TV/DVD sets is outstanding. I give them an A+ for that effort, since, as a collector, that's the #1 parameter that I will look at before buying a TV/DVD set.

Also, on an unfortunate note, the R2/4 6M$M S2 sets are also sub-par xfr quality, however, they're still official Universal studio releases and the best available anywhere. Note for BW fans: As you all know, the first 2-parter BW "pilot" eps were included in the 6M$M S2 series and are included in the S2 6M$M R2/4 sets. Those 2 eps in this set didn't fare well in the xfr to DVD. Either Universal didn't spend the $'s to remaster these prints or perhaps the PAL masters weren't available for them to do so. That's anyone's guess except for employees of Universal.

All good fun of course, I can't imagine many people that buy this DVD are new to the adventures of The Bionic Man.

The big downer with this season is the poor colour balance and rendering to digital. On my big LCD screen its muddiness is apparent.

I'll wait until Universal gives this show the technical technical attention it deserves.Until then it remains a pricey DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Death death death death.......2006-03-22

Computing the way it was and the way they saw it would be in the future. Add to this a mystery that may rival Stephen King fans.

Avery Jensen (Dean Stockwell) is discussing how all the computers in town are linked together. Some rambunctious students see this as and advantage to getting a credit card. So they get fellow student, Karen McMillan (Stefanie Powers) and a young cutie to vamp Avery into making a man on paper. Everything is going swimmingly until the paper man purchase a gun and grows an unnecessary birth certificate. Now it looks as though the computer has a mind of its own and the creators are meeting with a mysterious demise. It also seems mysterious that Avery seems immune.

It is interesting to see the actors as they were in this movie the Lisa (Tina Chen) that teaches the computer to say breath (death) is in the movie "Three Days of the Condor".

3 out of 5 stars 4 stars + 2 stars = 3 stars.......2006-03-19

Okay, we have a Dean Stockwell double-feature: "Paper Man" (4 stars) and "Born to Be Sold" (2 stars).

In "Paper Man," a college student accidentally gets a credit card with someone else's name on it, and he and three friends want to use it. They recruit the university's genius graduate student in computer science (Dean Stockwell), to put enough information into the bank's computer system for the credit card to remain viable. At first, they are clearly agreeing that they will pay all the bills from the credit card purchases, with the only gain being actually having a credit card. Remember, this film was made in 1971, when college students did not get credit cards. Anyway, all is going well, until three of the original four are killed in very strange accidents, that might have been related to the computer, which runs all security systems, lights, heating-and-cooling, etc., for the university. This leaves only one of the original four (Stephanie Powers), and Dean Stockwell's character. Has the computer taken on a life of its own, and decided to kill off the pesky students? Has Dean Stockwell slipped over the edge, and is using the computer to kill people? Has someone else "hijacked" the faked identity created by the students, for their own purposes?

In some ways, the movie is quite antiquated. The computer fills the entire basement of a building, everyone (except Dean Stockwell) seems baffled and awed by what computers can do, and a credit card is something very hard to obtain. However, the movie was ahead of its time on the issue of identity theft and faked identities. What started out as four students jumping on a computer error to get them credit, ends up with quite a few people dead, and the true villain almost gets away with it. Some of the acting is weak, but Dean Stockwell and Stephanie Powers turn in performances that are quite acceptable.

As for the "B-side" feature, "Born to Be Sold" is a depressing movie with weak acting, for the most part. Lynda Carter is pretty good as an overloaded but effective social worker, who stumbles onto a scam wherein pregnant teens are paid off if they give up their unwanted babies, while living together in a home managed by Dean Stockwell's character, and his wife, who do not provide any of the care these troubled, pregnant girls need. Oh, and Dean is not a nice guy, and is not behaving himself at all. Except for Carter and Stockwell, everyone else seems to be going through the motions, with little real credibility in their performances. However, we again have a movie that is older (1981) portraying an issue that is still a hot topic, with surrogate pregnancies often brought up in television dramas about legal issues.

3 out of 5 stars Paper Man.......2005-12-26

The first thing I notice is the hair styles from 1971, the long hair on the boys, influenced by the Beatles.

The editorial description of this movie got one thing wrong. The college students are not erasing their charges on the credit card. They are paying the charges. I can understand the editorialist's error though. Who in his right mind would not only use someone else's credit card, but also pay the charges he incurs?

This movie is paced well and holds your interest. You realize that someone is the bad guy, and you start to suspect the three male leads who remain after the first murder is committed. You also start to suspect the computer itself, and the fabricated human body in the script. So you have five suspects.

In one sense, it is a modern issue. It is about identity theft. In this case, the identity being stolen belongs to nobody, because it is simply someone's last and first name reversed. The bad guy is using that fictional person's name now, and using it successfully, in order to cover up his own fugitive past.

In another sense, it is so outdated as to be quaint. Computers are made much of. The expert explains to somebody what "logging in" means. Computers are huge and fill a big room. They use punch cards. The little desktop or laptop you are using now would put that monstrous clunker to shame.

Sounds like what happens when you visit too many off-the-beaten-path sushi shops, doesn't it? Godzilla's Revenge is number 10 in the Godzilla series, directed by the first and best of the Godzilla directors, Inoshiro Honda. Essentially a childhood power fantasy, the film concerns Ishiro (the director's namesake), a youngster whose mind-tripping dreams on Monster Island help him gain the resolve to rout a gang of criminals and the neighborhood bullies who've been plaguing him. Part child's fantasy story, part monster movie with extended battle sequences, Godzilla's Revenge may be one of Honda's most consistently entertaining films, despite the fact that the colorful monster footage is reused from earlier movies. This is recommended fare for the juvenile or juvenile-at-heart. --Jim Gay

5 out of 5 stars Lighten up, folks!.......2006-08-02

I love this movie. It's extremely corny, most of the footage is stock, but it is so entertaining. I think the Godzilla gang really had fun making this one.Minilla is ridiculous, but remember, this is in a kid's dream sequence. His dreams WOULD be made up of stock footage and ridiculous characters, wouldn't they? I think this one is a great big thank you to all the kids who helped make Godzilla famous.

1 out of 5 stars attack of the killer stock footage.......2006-06-16

this is ether the worst godzilla movie ever made or one of the best.(depending on what you want out of it.) Being a Godzilla series fan I gave this movie the closest raiting I could. (please look at what decribes why you want the movie below and get the best rating for you)

IF YOU ARE A GODZILLA SERIES FAN- this movie is a terrable godzilla movie (with a misleading title.)This movie shows you one to two minutes of new godzilla. There is only one new scene with Gidzilla! (the rest is old stock footage from Son of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster.) The only reason to buy this movie is ether to complete the collection, OR to see one of the funniest godzilla movies ever made. (beating Godzilla vs. Megalon!)My brother and I laffed so hard when we saw this movie because Minya talking is the worst idea i've ever heard. (literally heard.) IN CONCLUSION if you get this movie in a box set (because they always stick this one in there), and are to lazy to put in both Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster and Son of Godzilla, skip ALL of the scenes without Godzilla, turn the volume lower than mute, and crank up some Heavy Metal music (may I suggest Metallica?) because this is not a good moment for godzilla! For a Godzilla series fan I give this movie a -* (negotive star)raiting.

IF YOU ARE GETTING A GIFT FOR A CHILD AROUND THE AGE OF 5 To 8- This a good movie for a small child who (like I used to be) is obsessed with dinosaurs or monsters. This movie has a farely nice message for kids, wrapped up in a watchable package. It teaches your kids to stand up for themselves. For a young child I give this movie a **** (four star) review.

5 out of 5 stars remember how old you were when you first saw this?.......2006-03-26

i think this is one of the best godzilla movies ever. we have all the monsters on monster island wow i saw this as a child no older than the little boy and i could relate. i felt so good and strong after this movie. keep in mind how old you were when you first saw this. see it through the eyes of a child. godzilla and his son will always be my heros. buy this and take a break from the real world and go back to your youth on monster island.

3 out of 5 stars It's like a snowcone--pleasant, sweet, and insubstantial--and who doesn't like a snowcone now and then?.......2006-01-31

Since when were Godzilla movies supposed to be taken seriously? Don't get me wrong; I absolutely love them, but to read some of the reviews posted here one would think that this movie constitutes some atrocity against humanity, when, really, it's just a very lightweight, inoffensive piece of fluff.

Sure, it's aimed squarely at kids. Sure, it's cheap-looking; isn't that the fun of a classic Godzilla movie? Have your insulin ready for the sicky sweet kiddy matinee slant this movie has, then sit back and enjoy what amounts to a compilation of the best stock footage sequences from previous movies.

This was only the second Godzilla movie I ever saw as a kid; I was maybe 10 years old at the time, and thought that being able to shift moods from deadly serious dealings in the first one was a really neat idea (I was only 10 at the time, after all). I still enjoy the virtually nonstop parade of monster scrappin', even if some of it is re-cut from other movies. I never guessed such a thing way back when.

Groovy to me still is the very late-sixties Lounge sound of the main theme, "March of the Monsters". Outer-spacey electronic and burning with lava-hot sax, it cools off with jangling surfer guitar to create a piece of psychedelic pop trash ear candy at it's trippiest.

The other major reason to see this is for the only screen appearance of Gabara, a colorful, fierce-looking (for that time) and highly original beasty who I always have included as part of the offical monster lineup. Even if he is regarded as purely the product of a boy's fevered imaginings, those of us who dig him know he's as "real" as any of the rest of the Toho gang.

Just remember that this movie could have done MUCH worse for pissing away it's given potential, as other entries have certainly done ("Godzilla Final Wars",anyone?).

"Godzilla's Revenge" doesn't aim high to begin with, and therefore shouldn't be considered a failure when, in fact,it squarely hits the mark.

Cynics and fanboys alike to need to view it through the eyes it was intended for in the first place (if they can remember how), and, like enjoying a snowcone on a summer day, they (and you) will find it pleasant, colorful, sweet, and insubstantial, a not-too-serious distraction that's gone before you know it, and you won't disappointed for having taken the time.

1 out of 5 stars FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, SAVE YOUR MONEY AND SANITY!.......2006-01-22

"Godzilla's Revenge" is without question, the absolute WORST Godzilla movie ever produced, beating out "Godzilla Vs. Megalon". (But not by much!)

This movie makes me wonder how much exprimenting with drugs director Inoshiro Honda was involved with when he envisioned "Godzilla's Revenge"; I have noticed that not even Mystery Science Theatre 3000 has had a chance to put their own spin on this movie`, it's so bad. I think that it may even be worse than "Robot Monster", or even "Hercules In New York"!

The basic plot is that a child attending school is having problems with a bully, so this young kid daydreams he visits Monster Island, (first intoduced in "Destroy All Monsters")and gets advice from none other than Minya, Godzilla's son! AAAAUGGH!

This movie cannot be considered an original because many of the scenes involving Godzilla are clips from his earlier movies; and this version of Godzilla is one of the movies wherein he looks more like the Cookie Monster!

So, unless you REALLY, REALLY, REALLY enjoy watching TERRIBLE movies, I suggest you STAY AWAY!

Unless you are under the age of 6,this movie is a complete pile of Lenny the Wonderdog doo! However, if you are a fan of Craig Ferguson, it is worth fast forwarding through to view him as the evil, obviously bi-polar Dr. Wagner. You will still be able to figure out all the non-existent plot twists while skipping to Mr. Ferguson's scenes. Otherwise, it is not worth the cost of the dynamite it would take to blow it up.

2 out of 5 stars Horrible DVD transfer!!.......2004-09-22

I have seen this movie on European television and it was magnificent. The first 70 percent of the movie is a bit slow but given time, it eventually builds up towards the breath-taking combat scenes towards the end. The final 30% makes up for the first 70% tenfold!! The cinematography, the music (a disco rip-off of Clint Eastwood's Hang'Em'High)are just as great. Casanova Wong is quite a graceful and agile fighter in this one.
I was VERY UPSET upon viewing this movie in DVD format in the states. It was like they used something worse than EP mode because the frame rate was EXTREMELY choppy. But if you are a die hard kung fu flick fan, I still have to recommend getting this for the movie's final moments. Yes, it is that good. Another thing interesting to note is that the opening credits are in Italian, just as I saw it in Italy all those years ago. Strange; wonder if it was only released there?

4 out of 5 stars Danny Kaye at His Best.......2006-04-02

I haven't had a chance to see a lot of Danny Kaye movies over the years. By the time I came around his Hollywood days were pretty much behind him and were replaced by his UNICEF work. The Danny Kaye movies I have seen over the years were often mediocre at best. There were times I could tell he had talent but the scripts and the directors apparently had less. In "Wonder Man" I sat back in appreciation of the wide range of talent he has. His gift for accents and his facial animations were on display and the script and direction seemed to realize that Kaye was the key to the movie. His portrayal of a Russian singer with hayfever was inspired (although I wondered if that would actually work as a nightclub act). My favorite was the first number he did. The mixture of dance, song, and humor made it a great, all around exhibition. The supporting cast was mediocre; this was Kaye's show from beginning to end. If you're curious as to what kind of talent Danny Kaye had, "Wonder Man" is the movie to watch.

    5 out of 5 stars I agree.......2004-05-29

Charging $259 for this DVD is ridiculous. Arsenic and Old Lace sells for $14.99, what's so special about this one? I love the oldies so I'm interested in purchasing Wonder Man but NOT at this price!

5 out of 5 stars DOES THIS THING REALLY COST $ 259.00.......2004-02-13

I am shocked to see that Amazon is offering this DVD at the ridiculous price of $259.00. Did any of the previous reviewers pay that amount for this. If you know of any where I can purchase this at a MUCH LOWER price. Please Email me at bkuszak@hotmail.com

5 out of 5 stars really witty and fun.......2002-11-13

Danny Kaye plays a dual role in this comedy spotlighting his multitude of talents in singing, dancing and physical comedy. Just before he's about to testify against the mob, the fast-living nightclub entertainer Buzzy Bellew is slain. But Buzzy's ghost promptly proceeds to haunt his rather reserved, bookish twin Edwin... until Edwin agrees to take his place on the stage. Hoping to catch those responsible for the killing, the shy librarian not only capably steps into his double's dancing shoes, but also into the arms of Buzzy's fiancée.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonder Man.......2007-06-11

Danny Kaye plays two parts; 1) A dead twin brother who is a singer/dancer and 2) his identical book worm brother. The 2 men merge together and causes chaos and perfect comedy with great songs. His love interest is Virginia Mayo.

4 out of 5 stars "As Shakespeare once said - Buster!".......2007-02-12

Mostly, I enjoy Danny Kaye. I consider him to be a close second as the funniest redhead in showbiz (do I even have to mention who the funniest one is?). He comes across as this warm and gentle guy with massive comedic and musical gifts who, perhaps, at times, had a penchant for too much mugging (but maybe his writers were to blame). He exhibited a flair for funny facial expressions and for introducing songs rife with glib, rapid-fire double speak and tongue twisters and was also a natural at physical comedy. With the success of his first starring role in the 1944 feature UP IN ARMS, the powers-that-be in Hollywood couldn't wait to throw Danny Kaye back into the public consciousness. So, a year later, Kaye's second feature film WONDER MAN was released.

Here's the outrageous plot: When carefree and popular nightclub performer Buster Dingle (Danny Kaye), whose stage name is Buzzy Bellew, is gunned down for having witnessed a murder, his ghost comes back and convinces his shy, bookish twin brother Edwin Dingle (also Danny Kaye) to pose as himself until things are set right.

But Edwin, who may have a photographic mind and may be able to write simultaneously with both hands, is a life long maladroit and needs all the help he can get in the unfamiliar world of savvy crooks and glitzy show business. And that help comes in the form of Buster's ghost as, often, events conspire to force Buster to take over Edwin's body to bail him out of a jam, with predictably zany results. Eventually, after some more farcical bits and several wacky musical numbers, the bad guy is nabbed and the girl is won over.

With sumptuous eye candy being provided by a game Virginia Mayo, who plays the lovely and wholesome librarian Ellen, and newbie Vera-Ellen, here making her film debut as club entertainer and Buzzy's fiancee Midge, the main draw here is still Danny Kaye. His wife Sylvia Fine, throughout Danny's career, has excelled in writing specialty lyrics and songs which ideally suited his talents for mimicry and double speak. She contributes here with "Bali Boogie" and adapts the Russian song "Otchi Tchorniya" to Danny Kaye's particular brand of musical mayhem. I'm not sure if she has anything to do with Kaye's uproarious skewering of opera near the end, although I would suspect...yeah.

In the course of his acting career, Danny Kaye's resume boasts less than 20 feature films. WONDER MAN falls somewhere just below his very best cinematic works. For my money, his two best pictures are THE COURT JESTER (1956) and THE FIVE PENNIES (1959). In fact, I consider THE INSPECTOR GENERAL (1949) and THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY (1947) to be better than WONDER MAN. Here, Kaye mugs just a bit too often for my taste. I don't much care for his telephoned barnyard noises, and his "Palpably Inadequate Blues" routine in Prospect Park gratingly channels Jerry Lewis at his histrionical worst. Sadly, a good portion of the gags in this film is too broad and dated.

Now, with all that, I can still never quite bring myself to give a Danny Kaye film a rating below three stars, and I've seen just about all of 'em. I'll always feel that his potential was never fully tapped, but in other films and even in several scenes in this one, we get a glimpse of how entertaining and talented this man is. To quote several of the extras in this film: "What a guy." WONDER MAN, with its flaws, is still pretty diverting stuff and solidly delivers on what the audience expects, which is Danny Kaye unleashed. It's a good enough flick and merits three and a half stars.
