Sometimes a movie works despite all its faults. Outrageous Fortune has a flimsy, formulaic script, so-so production values, and an odd combination of stars, but somehow it's engaging and fun. Shelley Long and Bette Midler play two struggling actresses--one a hoity-toity priss and the other a brassy slob--who learn they've been sleeping with the same guy (Peter Coyote) when he gets blown up in a terrorist assault and they confront each other in the morgue. When they discover that he's still alive, the bickering pair track him down, traipsing across the U.S. in high heels, pursued all the way by government agents, using their dubious acting talents to get them out of tough situations. The absurd plot keeps things moving and director Arthur Hiller (Silver Streak, The Out of Towners) gets cheerful performances out of everyone, particularly the strong supporting cast--including Robert Prosky (Broadcast News, Mrs. Doubtfire) as a pompous acting teacher, comedian George Carlin as a burnt-out would-be Indian, and the underused John Schuck (M*A*S*H, McCabe & Mrs. Miller) as a long-suffering agent. Contrived, cliché-ridden, but just absurd enough to entertain. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Lauren (Shelley Long, THE BRADY BUNCH MOVIE) is refinement, regimentation, and ballet slippers. Sandy (Bette Midler, THE FIRST WIVES CLUB) is brassy, bossy, and stiletto heels. They meet and it's hate at first sight. But these two opposites are shocked to discover a common bond: They share the same boyfriend -- a handsome schoolteacher (Peter Coyote, RANDOM HEARTS) who mysteriously and conveniently disappears. Mr. Right wronged them ... and when they decide to track the scoundrel down, they're thrown together in a cross-country pursuit for better or worse ... mosty for worse! Brilliantly cast and deviously written, this racy, riotous comedy provides sidesplitting laughs of outrageous proportions!

5 out of 5 stars FUNNY!!!.......2007-06-12

This is a classic great comedy for anyone who loves comedy! These two together definately compliment each other's character!

5 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like this anymore!!.......2007-04-23

This along with Jumpin Jack Flash, Manhatten Murder Mystery and Serial Mom is one of my all-time favorite comedies! Bette Midler is great, although Shelley Long really shines here! To name a few scenes that really stand out is the catfight scene in the morgue, the scene in the smoke shop when they are trying to get information from the manager, and the scene at the airpot when Long is trying to pull one over on the ticket agent! Long and Midler are complete opposites (probably in real life as well) so you can imagine the tension and bickering that will come along with it! As wannabe actresses living in New York that happen to be dating the same man who ends up screwing them both over, they set out on a cross-country chase to confront him and end up finding themselves in a fun-filled comedy-mystery that never loses steam! I highly recommend having this in your collection. You can watch it again and again and will find it hilarious each and every time! 5 stars all the way!

4 out of 5 stars Outrageous Fortune.......2007-03-14

If you liked 80's comedies, you'll like this movie. If you are a Bette Midler fan, this is a must see.

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest movies I've ever seen.......2006-09-04

Outrageous Fortune is the typical 80s comedy. It isn't the highest quality film, but it alson knows it and doesn't take itself too seriously, which in the end helps make the movie as funny and rewatchable as it is. Shelley Long plays her typical uptight intellectual, while Bette Midler does what audiences want her to do: be her brash, raunchy, and irreverent self. The one-liners are delivered with perfect comedic timing ("He's not gonna murder us. Cause we're gonna be raped and murdered in THIS BUILDING!"), and the plot, while incredibly far-fetched, is silly enough to complement the mood of the movie. And while the film, at only 100 minutes, still manages to feel overlong, never stops entertaining. If in the mood for some big laughs and/or a film to lighten up a bad mood or hard day, this is the perfect film.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious, Funny Chick Flick You'll Watch Again and Again!.......2006-07-19

Bette Midler and Shelley Long are hilarious as an unlikely duo attempting to track down their turncoat boyfriend. The two have a great chemistry and this is one of the rare, geniunely funny films that pairs up two very funny, polar opposite actresses. The action is nonstop, the scenes hilarious (especially the one in the morgue and with the sleazy smoke shop store clerk). I have watched this movie over and over again and it never fails to entertain me. Great acting by Peter Coyote and George Carlin as well.
