I was very pleased that these films are now available on DVD.I must say that they may be even more enjoyable now that I am older as they were when I was just a kid in the 70's.I feel that Bill Cosby and Sidney Poiter should be mentioned in discussions concerning the greatest comedy teams of all time.

I dig the whole 70s genre thing man; but the ongoing mob-money, flip the script thing is redundant in light of the same spin from the previous "uPTOWN sATURDAY nIGHT", and "Let's Do It Again".

The cast is fantastic and the sound track is outstanding. I feel the script didn't do the cast justice. I guess it was just a product of the short-comings of the stereo-typical roles for that era. Hey, I thought Martin Lawrence and Will Smith were going to remake one of these films..holla back.

At a time when the `blaxploitation' genre was prevalent in the cinema, a handful of individuals tried to provide an intelligent, positive alternative, one being Academy Award winner Sidney Poitier (Lilies of the Field, To Sir, with Love, In the Heat of the Night), with a trio of films he not only directed, but also co-starred in with Bill Cosby, including Uptown Saturday Night (1974), Let's Do It Again (1975), and this feature, titled A Piece of the Action (1977), which would mark Poitier's last role in front of the camera for just over ten years, as he focused his efforts towards directing. Also appearing is James Earl Jones (Field of Dreams, The Hunt for Red October), Denise Nicholas (Blacula, Let's Do It Again), Hope Clarke (Basquiat), Tracy Reed (Car Wash, Running Scared), and Titos Vandis (The Exorcist, Oh, God!), along with Ja'net DuBois ("Good Times", I'm Gonna Git You Sucka), Frances Foster (Crooklyn), Eric Laneuville (A Force of One), Ernest `Rog' Thomas ("What's Happening!!"), and Sheryl Lee Ralph (The Mighty Quinn, Skin Deep), in her first film role.

As the film begins we meet two men, Dave Anderson (Cosby), a burglar who specializes in safecracking, and Manny Durrell (Poitier), a conman who's just fleeced a local criminal boss, Mr. Bruno (Vandis) out of a whole lot of dough. The activities of both men draw the attention of the police, including that of soon to be retired detective Joshua Burke (Jones), but neither man is fingered for their respective crimes...that is until Burke blackmails David and Manny into working for a local community improvement center. The two men, not knowing their blackmailer, or each other, for that matter, become reluctant philanthropists, stuck having to train and find jobs for 30 inner city juvenile delinquents who seemingly have little desire or motivation to make their lives better, and are only participating in the program because of a court order (one thing they do have a lot of is attitude). As the men begin their `penance' work, they also try to figure out who is behind their predicament, as if they can discern the identity of their `benefactor', they may also find a way out, but matters become difficult as Dave sort of falls for the woman who heads the community center, Ms. Lila French (Nicholas), while Mr. Bruno and his associates learn the identity of the person responsible for conning them i.e. Manny (it's not so much about the money, but an issue of disrespect). Interestingly enough, David and Manny's work with the troubled youths begins to show positive results, but they may not be around long enough to enjoy the successes as the mobsters seek their revenge.

While this isn't my favorite Poitier/Cosby pairing, it's still a really well done movie, and definitely worth checking out. Actually, I believe all three films The Cos and Poitier did were originally intended more for African American audiences, to show they didn't have to settle for the stereotypical black caricatures streaming out of Hollywood at the time, but the movies had such appeal that most all audiences appreciated them, and, subsequently, they did very well. The main difference here compared to their two, previous outings is this one has less humor and slapsticky comedy. It's almost like there's two movies here, one dealing with Poitier and Cosby's character trying to get out of their predicament, and then a second featuring Poitier sort of reprising his role from his 1967 film To Sir, with Love, which featured him as a teacher trying to infuse a sense of self worth into a bunch of snotty English students (there are a number of touching, borderline sappy sequences, as the kids come to terms with their reality, and realize they have to make their own opportunities). Each plot is given equal time, finally converging into one story, resulting in a running time of just over two hours. Another big difference is here Poitier and Cosby start out as criminals, eventually seeing the error of their ways, while in the previous films their characters were more along the lines of working class fellows who get humorously tangled up with criminal elements. The chemistry between Poitier and Cosby is most definitely present as it was in the previous films, with Poitier as sort of the straight man to Cosby's comical character, and a lot of credit goes to a strong, professional supporting cast headed by James Earl Jones, as the no nonsense retired detective using the men to help those less fortunate for his own reasons. It did seem a little odd how quickly the kids caught on and turned things around for themselves, but then Poitier's character did employ some unique techniques. Another aspect that helped a lot was the inclusion of a number of fine looking women, including Denise Nicholas, Tracy Reed, and Hope Clarke, who are all excellent performers that held their own well against Cosby, Poitier, and Jones. There was sort of an odd subplot featuring Manny, his girlfriend Nikki, played by Reed (the two were living together), and an unexpected visit from her disapproving parents (and an alcoholic aunt played by DuBois), I wasn't sure where this aspect was going, but I think it was mainly meant to show Manny's affections for Nikki, as later she's kidnapped by the goons, and used as leverage against Poitier's character. The story moves along well, but given all that's going on in the film, some might get a little lost if they're not paying attention. Some aspects of the story could have been simplified, or even removed, but given the movie was an all around good time, I didn't mind it running longer than it needed too...I think my favorites scenes involved Bill Cosby's character dancing, once in a disco, and again at the very end during the credits. I have to say, some of those moves, which I don't think I've ever seen another human being perform, were outta sight. Oh, before I forget, the movie also features an excellent, original musical score by the legendary rhythm and blues artist Curtis Mayfield.

The picture on this DVD, presented in widescreen (1.85:1) anamorphic, looks very good, and the Dolby Digital mono audio comes through cleanly. There are some extras included, the main one being a featurette titled Dynamite Duo: A Retrospective (7:30), which includes interviews with actors James Earl Jones, Denise Nicholas, Jimmie Walker, John Amos, Julius Harris, screenwriter Richard Wesley, New York Press critic Armond White, and USC professor and author Todd Boyd. Also included is a trailer for this film, along with ones for the films Uptown Saturday Night (1974) and Let's Do It Again (1975).

By the way, horror film fans might be interested to know Angus Scrimm, the Tall Man from the Phantasm movies, makes an appearance in the latter half of this film, as a monk, of all things.

Excellent Animated Series, annoying DVD releases.......2004-12-22

There is nothing better than Animation complete Box Sets on DVD, but Warner and other companies with other DVD titles insist in releasing those horrible discs with random, separeted episodes. It's pretty bad those masterpieces (like Superman, Batman and Marvel 90's cartoons) were being treated this way. But fortunately, the Series Collections is coming out in January, so I suggest to keep your money and wait for it.

Why buy this DVD!.......2004-11-10

Okay Warner Bros. now I know you've lost touch of the fans. Why would we want to buy this DVD containing 2-3 episodes, when we can wait for the ENTIRE first season of Superman TAS to come out at Christmas time. You guys have to rethink your marketing and fire the guys who are making these awful decisions to bring out these meesly 3-4 episode DVD's.......GIVE THE FANS WHAT WE WANT.....CAUSE WE REFUSE TO BUY INTO THESE ANYMORE!!!!!

A Little Piece of the Series.......2004-11-08

This is like a "Greatest Hits" or sampler of the entire SUPERMAN animated series from 1996-2000. The upcoming January release of Season One will only cover one of these episodes, so it's a good way to tide you over until all the sets come out.

You get four episodes selected from the entire series fifty-four :
"A Little Piece of Home"(episode # 5 -- Lex Luthor discovers a weakness for Superman)
"Speed Demons" (episode # 17 -- The Flash and Superman race in an homage to the original comic from which the plot is lifted)
"The Late Mr. Kent"(episode # 35 - Clark Kent appears to die trying to save a death row inmate)
"Where There's Smoke" (episode # 42 - a mutant "Fire starter" steals some precious sea history pieces)

They are all quite solid stories which are well animated with top notch voice acting. Tim Daly (Wings) provides the voice of Superman, while Dana Delany (China Beach) is Lois Lane. Clancy Brown (extensive voice work including Spongebob Squarepants and an actor in The Shawshank Redemption) plays Lex Luthor who surprisingly resembles Telly Savalas in his animated form. This is the team of producers and animators who gave us the great Batman the Animated Series as well as Batman Beyond, The Justice League, and The Teen Titans. But where Batman was dark and brooding, this series is more bright and wholesomely optimistic. Action is hardly ever at night, and Metropolis seems like a great place to live as opposed to Gotham City where crime seems to ooze from the sidewalks. This would seem to be a "greatest hits" compilation from the three seasons. You get some very impressive guest stars voicing the supporting characters. Peter Gallagher (American Beauty), Dennis Haysbert(24), Peri Gelpin(Fraiser), and William H. Macy are all in "Where There's Smoke".

Now this makes a lot of sense...........2004-09-15

okay, this show is good. However, the DVD is not, and that is why i have given this release one star. Otherwise i would give the show itself 5 stars. I guess if you want to continue collecting the show if you have (or even if you dont' have) the last son of krypton disc. This contains eps. 4-7 i believe, and is a worthless buy. why? well, ponder this. On january 25th the first 18 eps. will be coming out in a boxed set with the following box sets in approximately 5-10 months apart (per release)from the january release There will be three box sets of 18 to equal the 55 eps. this show had. Or you could just wait and get 4 new eps. every 6 months. Your choice. 3 box sets...or 15-20 individual discs....

Good Stuff, but a rip off for adults........2004-09-09

This is a good buy if you want a DVD for entertaining the short attention span of your kids. But, if you are an adult (which this is a good series for those who love the genre), keep demanding the release of season boxed sets just as they fabulously did with Batman: The Animated Series Season 1. These are excellent epsiodes but are only worth the price if you are collecting the other DVDs with 3-4 episodes per disc.

Two Comedic Episodes But Average Overall!.......2006-12-04

If you are choosing which volumes to keep, this one falls under the "nice to have but not essential" category. In the first episode, we get a comical episode as "Koirck" and then Spock attempt to pass themselves off as old-time Chicago-style gangsters with extremely humourous results. The plot is admittedly far-fetched and full of holes and yet this is what adds to the humour of the episode which is never meant to be taken too seriously. Overall a slightly above average episode.

The second episode is also humourous although it is a little less so when compared with the first. Aliens hell-bent on subduing the members of the Enterprise end up having to deal with human style sensations which ultimately results in their undoing. It is precisely the way the Enterprise crew and especially Spock's role in making the Kelvan commander jealous is what makes this episode really funny.

In conclusion, this volume contains two above average episodes which nevertheless fall far short from the heights achieved on other Season 1 episodes.

The Chicago Crime book contaminated the iconian society, whose propensity for exactness and imitation built two war societies on the descriptions from the Book. The society lived by the details of the book unquestionably.

Spock argued illogically, the proper solution for the two war factions was unionification. Spock disreguard the moral thinking which would have opposed unifying all the organized crime heads into one massive band of thieves. The Federation entangle itself into a terrible dangerous and precarious situtation, as the figurative GodFather of all organized crime on the planet. Kirk must have been out of his Vulcan head too go along with Spock and establish such an unlawful organization. I question Kirk ability too be morally upright. Spock acted against all recommendations that the computer could resolve no logical or ration solution to the problem. The only solution was to change the idealogy of the groups into a peaceful constitution rule of law and let revolution forces emerge. Instead, the Federation became the policemen of the galaxy in a government that enslaves and murders its citizens. Outrageous!

One classic and one solid show, with hints of trouble ahead.......2003-09-04

A Piece of the Action-This gangster episode, and Tribbles, were the two Trek comedies that really worked. While I wouldn't exactly call the humor here subtle, it is intertwined in a fairly traditional action plot. We are able to enjoy Kirk and Spock's thuggishness for its own sake while simultaneously staying focused on the plot, for the simple reason that their behavior is called for by the story, rather than being a gimmick. The idea of a highly impressionable alien race who's cultural evolution could depend so thoroughly on a random event (the leaving behind of the book) is an interesting one as well. This episode is also helped by strong guest acting, most notably from Tayback. (4.5 stars)

By Any Other Name-An average episode, this one sees the enterprise crew reduced to salt (Styrofoam?) crystals for future use by the colonization-bent Kelvans. As others have pointed out, this is an interesting episode in that it has two tones. The events of the first half are frightening (although not as eerily stylized as 3rd season shows), as Kirk seems powerless to prevent the Kelvans' cold blooded homicide and control of the Enterprise. The ominous sense that anything goes is augmented by the surprising turn of having a female crew member killed. The tone changes dramatically in the second half of the show though, as the remaining crew exploit the Kelvans' newfound emotions, with entertaining results. These scenes are not just entertaining, but also insightful; it reminds the viewer that much of our own (only semi-successful) acculturation is devoted to reigning in our emotions.

But one wonders whether the blend of the dark and the comic seen here was for the best; it still worked here to some extent, but the episode's schism is somewhat jarring, and we're not quite as able to go along with the blend as we were in say Friday's Child, or A Private Little War. Why? Because a growing lack of introspection was beginning to border on cynicism. Did this gradual moral drift taint the show? Certainly the shows were becoming more calloused, a process that would accelerate in season 3. Season 3 certainly had other problems, but I believe some of the roots of future problems can be found, ironically enough, even in some of the strong episodes from season 2.

But back to By Any Other Name. Other pluses include Kirk's willingness to forgive even a defeated and cruel foe. And don't forget the lovely Kelinda. (3 stars)

REVIEW/COMMENTARY:
This is one of the series' most cheesy and fun-filled hours. It's rather apparent that Shatner had the time of his life playing the part of a stereotypical 20s/30s movie mobster. The combination of his legendary acting and the colorful mobster lingo make for some of the most amusing bits of Star Trek hamminess out there! Not to be outdone, Nimoy does an admirable job of playing the straight man to Jimmers' mafioso shenanigans! Makes ya wanna get on the blower and tell alla' yer trekkie buds all about it! Or maybe drive on over to their house in your flivver, and let `em in on the deal personally! That sound jake to ya, kid?

Notable guest star: the late Vic Tayback, best known on the sit-com `Alice' as the crusty diner owner/cook Mel, keeps the fun flowin' as Jojo Krako, the chief rival of main heavy Bela Oxmyx. I could almost see one of his molls turning to him and uttering, "kiss mah grits"!

REVIEW/COMMENTARY:
Ah, the ol' shrink-the-crew-down-into-weird-geometric-blocks episode... pure old-school Trek silliness! Throw in Mr. Scott gettin' hooched-up with one of the Enterprise crew's captors, and Jimmers seducing the alien babe-of-the-week (SURPRISE!) in order to regain control of his vessel from his captors, and you've got... well, nothin' you haven't seen before in previous old-school Trek eppies, really. Still, I find it entertaining in its own funny way, and by golly that's all that matters!

Star Trek seems to be one of the few science fiction television shows that cover a range of different genres such as westerns and gangsters and A PIECE OF THE ACTION is one example of that.
The USS Enterprise responds to a signal that was sent over a hundred years ago because it was sent by radio.
Kirk, Spock and McCoy beam down to a planet where the inhabitants are dressed from the 1920s fashions.
There are three crime gangs and they are constantly at war. In fact, no sooner do the trio beam down than they are in the middle of a hit, from one of the bosses, Krako.Kirk breaks the rule of non interference and appoints one as the boss and Krako as his lieutenant and tells that he doesn't want any trouble from the rest of them. He says there'll be a ship sent every year to collect their cut. McCoy is unhappy because he thinks he left his communicator on the Iotians planet. Kirk says,"Maybe in a few years the Iotians will have a piece of our action."
