Amazon.com essential video
Though it's impossible to gauge just how much of it is true, this endearing family comedy (based on the book by their children Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey) is inspired by the true story of the husband-and-wife efficiency experts Frank and Lillian Gilbreth and their adventures raising 12 kids at the turn of the century. Director Walter Lang takes a loping pace through the episodes of family life: the kids descend upon the new school in force while Dad (fussy Clifton Webb) offers his unsolicited views on education; Dad takes his oldest daughter (wholesome Jeanne Crain) to the school dance and becomes the hit of the ball; a mass tonsillectomy becomes an opportunity to document the ordeal as an experiment in efficiency. Myrna Loy almost steals the film in her one standout scene, holding back a smirk while a birth-control advocate (played by Mildred Natwick) solicits this mother of 12 to speak at a rally, but her martini-dry comic deadpan is criminally underused in this picture, which is dominated by Webb's stern, military-like parenting and Crain's adolescent crises. Though this sometimes overly sentimental classic never builds to any real dramatic plateau or comic highlights, it maintains an even tone of good humor and warmth throughout, capturing a bygone era through the travails of a loving family. A charming sequel, Belles on Their Toes, followed two years later. --Sean Axmaker
Description
This colorful depiction of life in a family of 12 children stars Clifton Webb as Frank Bunker Gilbreth, an eccentric father who prides himself on some truly unorthodox child-rearing methods. Based on the bestseller by two children of the real Mr. Gilbreth, this charming film co-starring Myrna Loy is "alive with big laughs" (Los Angeles Times).
Narrated by the oldest daughter (Jeanne Crain), the story follows a series of family crises over the years: from how the children over-whelmed their new school's administration office, to the time they threw a hospital into chaos when they arrived for a mass tonsillectomy. There's even a memorable encounter with a birth control advocate. Simultaneously hilarious and sentimental, "Cheaper by the Dozen is a family comedy in the truest sense.

The easy life.......2007-05-24
It is great to see a family from the past and see the problems of that day in time. Children that behave. and love for one another. pat
CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN DVD.......2007-05-14
The dvd was in excellent condition. I have seen this movie before and I wanted to add to my collection of movies based on true stories. I enjoy comedies as well as movies based on true stories. I would recommend this movie over the ones with Steve Martin.
One of the greatest ever.......2007-05-07
I saw this as a movie when I was a younger girl. It left such a great feeling I have never forgotten it. Then I was so glad to see I could get it in DVD form. Since receiving it I have watched it numerous times. With a storyline like this one it is such a treat to escape the real stresses of the day. It makes for alot of laughter and warm feeling in the heart. Since I come from a large family it brought back alot of memories. All of them happy ones. I also purchased Belles On Their Toes, the sequel. It was just as entertaining and touching. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to feel good about life.
Cheaper by the Dozen (old version).......2007-01-16
Wouldn't watch the new movie, love the old one.
Oldie but Goodie.......2007-01-14
I purchased this to show my industrial engineering students - they hadn't heard of it and the Galbreaths are the founding father/mother of industrial engineering ... also should see the sequel Bells on their Toes

Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt corral a wild herd of rampaging children in Cheaper by the Dozen, an enjoyable family flick. When Kate Baker (Hunt, Jerry Maguire) gets a book deal for her chronicle of their abundant family life, she also gets drawn into a book tour--leaving Tom (Martin, Bringing Down the House, The Jerk) to run the house and cope with his new, high-pressure job as a football coach. Naturally, chaos erupts, bringing the family to the brink of meltdown. Cheaper by the Dozen is not a great movie or an important movie or even a surprising movie, but it is a warm-hearted crowd-pleaser. The Bakers' family life is a bit idealized and antiseptic, but anyone looking for an escape from their own less-ideal family lives won't mind. Also featuring Tom Welling, Hilary Duff, Piper Perabo, and an uncredited Ashton Kutcher. --Bret Fetzer
Description
This fun-filled Cheaper By The Dozen Special Edition has as many extras as the Bakers have kids -- and then some! We've added a houseful of never-before-seen DVD features -- including all-new deleted and extended scenes, hilarious commentaries, exclusive featurettes, both widescreen and full screen viewing options, and a surprise or two!
Comedy superstar Steve Martin pairs up with Bonnie Hunt in this family comedy about two loving parents trying to manage careers and a household amid the chaos of raising 12 rambunctious kids!
Customer Reviews:
A good family movie.......2007-05-30
I read a lot of the reviews here about this movie. Some of them were negative and it almost led me not to buy it. I am glad I did. I bought it for 2 reasons: Steve Martin and Tom Welling. After being a fan of Steve Martin for years and a new fan of Tom Welling, I wanted to see how they could pull this off. I think they did a good job. In an age where few good family movies are made, this is a good family movie.
Steve Martin is the drive of this movie. When you have 12 kids to show, it is not easy to get all of them equal time but the writers and and directors seemed to handle the problem well and it is balanced. Yes, there are some times that are "busy" in this movie, but what would you expect from a family with 12 kids.
The other reason I bought this was Tom Welling. This guy is growing everyday as a better actor. I hope that he will be noticed by more Hollywood execs for the talent he has and he is building. In this movie he showed that he can be funny and be the Man of Steel on TV. I think that he would have been a better choice as the new movie Superman than that other guy they hired, simply because he has more talent. I have loved Superman since I was a kid, but Superman Returns was the only movie I have watched in a theatre that made me fall asleep less than 30 minutes into it. I tried to watch it again but just couldn't, it had the same affect.
Take it from a family man of three young girls. Buy the movie, get some popcorn and enjoy it. I just purchased number 2.
The WORST family movie ever made.......2007-03-17
Could this be even remotely related to the book that Ernestine Gilbreth Carey and Frank Gilbreth Jr. wrote? I was aghasted upon seeing this film. There were no traces of family value in it. None at all. The kids were so bratty and spoiled and they hated each other. How is it believable at the end when they all just magically pull together? The parents bring up their kids horribly in this film. The humor was not funny. I found this movie very repulsive. Is this what a model family is supposed to be? The people pulling together at the end was just sappy and corny and not credible, since they were all spoiled brats and they hated each other so much. The book and 1950 movie were very good in showing family values and how they stuck together during the 1920s. Times were rough at this time, and I can hardly imagine "Grandma Gilbreth" making up a game in which perfectly good apples are wasted in some form of baseball entertainment as said in the movie. It's so sickening to see that and those horrible bratty kids act bratty like that when times were actually so tough during the setting of the book. No family values. No humor. This movie is entirely pointless to watch. Watch the '50 version and "Belles on Their Toes," the sequel, and you can't go wrong.
blah.......2007-03-04
After watching Yours, Mine and Ours, I think Cheaper By the Dozen is really boring in comparison. Steve Martin plays an alright character, but the entire family of kids are almost completely forgettable, including Hilary Duff (the supposed star of the film). She's just not very interesting.
I agree with all the reviews that mention how inaccurate it is the way all the children act. The reality is, if these children ever acted that way in front of their parents, they would be in serious trouble. The parents would know more about parenting than what was portrayed of them in this film, that's for sure. If parents were really this stupid, the world would be in serious trouble.
12 Reasons For a Vasectomy.......2006-09-07
I knew going in that this film got poor reviews. It should have had a warning label regarding bad taste, poor parenting, and rude behavior. This is alleged to be a "family" when in fact it was a collection of lazy, self-absorbed, monsters that should have been put in burlap bags and left on the door step of an evil witch. The parents were completely ineffective and clueless on how to raise children much less organize such a large household.
This is the typical Hollywood view of families -- that is a family composed of loud mouthed rude children with a quick response to totally goofy parents. Not one child uttered one believable line in the entire movie. If ever a film warranted asking for your money back this one is it.
Cheaper by the Dozen.......2006-08-30
I like the movie, but I hate the fact that it is wide screen only. I don't remember that being listed. Other than that we recieve fast service and a good quality movie. The wide screen is probablly my fault.
Thanks,
SMW

The best performance in Cheaper by the Dozen 2 is by an actress you've probably never heard of: 11-year-old Alyson Stoner, who plays Sarah, one of twelve children of Tom and Kate Baker (Steve Martin, Bowfinger, and Bonnie Hunt, Return to Me). The movie follows the popular clan of the previous remake of Cheaper by the Dozen as they go to a camp in the mountains, where Tom renews his rivalry with Jimmy Murtaugh (Eugene Levy, Bringing Down the House). To the movie's credit, it doesn't quite degenerate into a National Lampoon's Vacation knock-off, though it comes perilously close. But thanks to the grace of Bonnie Hunt and general good spirits of the cast of kids (including Tom Welling, Smallville; Hilary Duff, The Perfect Man, who in some scenes becomes uncomfortably Lolita-esque; and Piper Perabo, Coyote Ugly, among others), this unnecessary sequel manages to remain enjoyable to anyone with a taste for broad family movies. But Stoner--as a tomboy getting her first crush--brings considerable charisma to her generically-written part, and her scenes give the movie a much-needed emotional lift. Otherwise, it's a movie in which Carmen Electra plays the voice of reason (in a series of tight-fitting tops). --Bret Fetzer
Description
Steve Martin is funnier than ever in this hilarious sequel! Tom Baker (Steve Martin) and wife Kate (Bonnie Hunt) bring their clan together for a memorable summer getaway. But their dream vacation turns into an outrageous competition with the overachieving, overzealous family of Tom's long-time rival, Jimmy Murtaugh (Eugene Levy). Featuring all the original Baker kids, including Hilary Duff, Tom Welling and Piper Perabo, this super-sized comedy is fun for the whole family!
Customer Reviews:
Cute, but not a great sequal.......2007-04-24
I liked the first one, this one was trying too hard to repeat the pattern and it just didn't flow. 22 kids, what's the point, you didn't have enough time in this movie to develop all of the characters and boiled down to about 10 characters in the movie that anybody was really interested in what was going on with them. It was fun to watch once, but not really a good movie to keep in the collection.
an ok film.......2007-03-31
Cheaper by the Dozen 2 is an improvement over the first one. Not a BIG improvement. Just a slightly better film.
I didn't care for how typical of a family movie this turned out to be. It also seemed like, while watching the family at that vacation place, that the only reason this movie exists is to make a few extra bucks and ride the momentum of the success of the previous movie. The writing was weak overall.
The movie is about Steve Martin (of course) who's the father of 12 children feuding with another father (of 8 kids) at this vacation place. Now, the story parts where the two fathers continued to get in their little digs because they didn't get along with each other was funny, but they really wasted some potential here for good action scenes.
An example: in one scene, Steve Martin tells his younger daughter about a plan to do something bad to the guy, but what happens? Only one above-average moment takes place involving a dog going crazy and jumping around on top of a dinner table, ruining the bad fathers "good china". It just wasn't particularly memorable writing. We were led to believe the rest of the movie would involve Steve's daughter finding ways to torment the guy, but after this scene, nothing more really happened, and the focus shifted on the daughter dating a boy around her age. Why?
Maybe they were trying to step the writing up a notch by maturing the kids. If that's the case, it's too soon for that. After all, this is only the second Cheaper by the Dozen movie. Wait until a third one, if one actually happens.
However, at least this time around, we actually care about the kids. Last time it felt like the kids were only there for Steve Martin to have fun with. Unfortunately the daughter of the other father looked exactly like the guys wife, and so throughout the movie I was constantly asking myself "who is who?" Seriously, both the daughter and the wife of the man (her stepmom) look alike.
I really did like the scene involving Steve Martin and the other father at the movie theater spying on their children who were dating each other. This was a really funny scene. I loved it.
Overall, not a bad family movie, but the film was too short overall, and needed more comedy bits to really boost up the rating.
Watch it and see if you don't like the Murtaughs better than the Bakers.......2007-03-29
Eugene Levy makes this movie. While you watch it, you'll end up laughing at all the parts he is in. Steve Martin isn't nearly as funny as Levy is in this movie. The movie attempts to get you to dislike the Murtaughs (Levy) and side with the Bakers(Martin). As you watch it, you'll find yourself thinking "The Bakers are complete slackers and screw ups while the Murtaughs are actually smart, funny, hardworking people". The Baker mom is a complete moron. She is the worst mother in the world. Martin is the worst father in the world. So why are we supposed to like the Bakers? I'd rather hang with the Murtaughs any day of the week. Watch and you'll agree.
Actually painful.......2007-02-23
I personally feel that Steve Martin is hugely over-rated and hasn't done anything worth seeing since Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (he was carried by John Candy in that one) That being said...I guess all "family oriented" movies must suck now by definition. Each night I stay up late and pray that Martin will stop making these types of films. If they come out w/ the 3rd Cheaper, I will move to New Zealand and become a Pigmy.
Good day
Painful to finish -- funny at times........2007-02-15
This was a relatively clean family movie depending on your standards.
It was very predicable and goofy -- almost painful to finish.
There were a few funny parts, but the adult men (fathers) are cast as the typical immature, egotistical males -- nothing like "father bashing" in Hollywood. In the end, the men "come to their senses." It seemed a bit like a flashback to life in the '80's. Probably marketing to the parents in their 30's now--they had plenty of 80's music to go along with it.
I'd would have rather sort through SPAM or organize my sock drawer, but may be enjoyable to some...

The Older Version is the Better Choice.......2007-06-03
Clifton Webb was most often case in dramatic roles. In ""Cheaper by the Dozen"" we get to see Webb in his comedic best. The original version of this film surpasses the newer one for many reasons: 1)the adults in the original had a wisdom and dignity sadly lacking in the modern setting, 2)the work ethic of the Gilbreth children is enchanting in the original, and, finally, 3) touching on the subject of death in the original adds even more depth to the story. ""Bells on Their Toes"" is not as unexpected as the original, but knowing more history about the Gilbreth family and their amazing mother is a nice sequel. This DVD should be in every family video library.

Great, classic movies.......2007-01-16
Well, I purchased these DVD's as a Christmas gift for my mother, and she loves them! They've always held a special place in our family, as she is one of 12 children, herself. It's my grandfather's favorite movie. They're great movies to watch as a family, and my children enjoy watching them as much as me, my mother, and my grandparents. You can never go wrong with great classics, like these movies are! I just wish I could have my 3 kids half as organized as these 12 were!
Movie Review.......2007-01-15
Again, I love old movies, as these two (2) movies are so very good, I wanted to own them, now I can watch these pictures back to back, the way they should show them on cable.

Thanks,
SMW
