Tin Men, the second in Barry Levinson's ongoing film series about his native Baltimore in the 1950s and '60s, focuses on a pair of competing aluminum-siding salesman at a point when the industry was loaded with scam artists. Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito play rivals who get involved in a fender-bender that quickly escalates from a minor argument into an all-out war, as they begin pulling practical jokes on each other. Dreyfuss takes it too far, however, when he sets out to seduce DeVito's unhappy wife (Barbara Hershey) and winds up falling in love with her. Much of the humor here comes from Levinson's keen ear as writer and director for the way these people talk--and what they talk about (like the discussion of why four men are living together without women on the Ponderosa in Bonanza). Beside the leads, the cast includes a great host of character actors, including Jackie Gayle, Bruno Kirby, John Mahoney, and J.T. Walsh. Others in Levinson's body of Baltimore films are Diner, Avalon, and the most recent, Liberty Heights. --Marshall Fine
Description
Cruise back to Baltimore 1963, to the time and turf of a rare American breed: the "tin man" (aluminum siding salesman). Two less-than-honest rivals in the tin game (Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito) meet in a fender bender, but their bruised egos and quick tempers turn the minor accident into a major vendetta against each other's symbols of success -- their prized Cadillacs. In what would seem to be a coup de grace, Dreyfuss decides to seduce DeVito's neglected wife (Barbara Hershey), but this romantic maneuver causes nonstop twists and turns to both the heart and the funnybone. With a supporting cast that's absolutely classic and music by The Fine Young Cannibals, TIN MEN sounds as good as it looks!

5 out of 5 stars Tin Men.......2007-02-10

What a great film! It captures the spirit of Baltimore in that era perfectly.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2006-09-08

If this is not one of the most underrated comedies, I don't know what is. Asides from being a comedy, Tin Men is expertly effective in capturing the ups and downs as well as the tension of being a salesman/con artist. The movie also does a beautiful job in capturing the Baltimor of the 1960's with the lingo, the clothes, and the scenery. Danny DeVito and Richard Dreyfuss play the roles of two aluminum siding salesmen from rival companies. A car accident between the two open's the door to an array of hilarious maladies between the two - from busting up each other's cars to BB (Dreyfuss) sleeping with Tielly's (DeVito) wife. The storyline is great, the actors are excellent, and the movie overall is flawless. I must have watched the DVD over ten times by now!

5 out of 5 stars Baltimore, 1963 - so many Cadillac fins! .......2006-02-11

Tin Men is a gem. If you have ever been a sales person or been around them, especially door-to-door sales, you may recognize these characters. Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito are Tin Men - that is aluminum siding salesmen who end up competing against each other for more than sales. They are hilarious anyway but together and with this script, VERY funny. This is a time capsule of the old-time salesman with the constant patter full of jokes and flattery, the consumer cons and sunny attitude toward a new day full of prospects. The "intellectual" discussion amongst the salesmen over Senor Wences and over the realism of Bonanza are priceless. Of note is one of the all-too-few appearances by J. T. Walsh as their sales manager. There is an additional audio track on this dvd with Levinson, Hershey, Cassel, Dreyfuss, Kirby, etc. discussing the making of the film. With at least four of his films taking place in Baltimore, I wonder if Levinson and John Waters have ever met?

4 out of 5 stars An Enduring Classis.......2005-09-30

We found Tin Men to be visually lush with beautifully photographed Cadillac fins, subtly amusing dialogue, and scenes that flowed naturally. It could be viewed just to hear the music, which was wonderful. The interesting story line even had "heart" without being maudlin. It will always be one of our favourites.

4 out of 5 stars The Metal Men.......2005-04-11

I guess what some people feel is funny is not funny to other people. I viewed this movie and have seen it a couple of times. I personally feel this is a funny movie. Devito has everything go wrong that could go wrong. He loses his wife (which he doesn't seem to want anyway), his house, the IRS is investigating him, he gets his car damaged and further damaged throughout the film. One scene in the movie that is funny is that Devito hasn't been making any money. So he goes home and tells his wife that it might be a good idea to move and downsize their home (His place is already small). The funny parts are Devito's bad luck and everything is crumbling around him. You feel for him and laugh at the situation as he does with a sardonic wit. It is an amusing film. Worth seeing. Give it a chance. The humor is sly. Good film.

4 out of 5 stars I could give 5 stars to the 1st part ..but the second................2006-05-28

The first part of the movie is awesome real action and brilliance with carter wong outshining the hero everytime. Its bad luck for the dud playing the lead role , but carter wong cannot be put second . The first part shows the maze and the training , the second is full of suprises , some that are cheesy and not needed. I felt the second part , where they leave the temple is where it starts to go a bit down .....

but buy this movie the action is worth your money...

5 out of 5 stars Old School Exitement.......2002-10-30

Oh, if only Carter Wong acted in movies today and thereby completely shutting down the over hyped over stlylized psuedo-hip crappile out these days! Unmatched intensity and inexahaustible passion was Ka Tat (carter Wong) stlye. He truly delivers in this, the first of an unofficial trilogy ending with a stunning "The Blazing Temple", directed all by Joseph Kuo, who had an interest in James Bond films as well. The bronzemen are an invention after the gold-dipped girl in "Goldfinger". Here though, they are given life by some hard hitting action packed Shaolin kung fu. The dvd also does justice to the original film's presentation and the back story of the young exiles seeking training and eventual revenge on the conniving enemy of Manchu. There are the sub-plots that bring life to the action and round out the film well, setting up for the classic great climax. The only problem with the feature is the subtitles, that at times are unclear and poorly translated. Though it is an old kung fu flick, so, many of us have gotten used to witnessing the injustice done to the chinese cinema: awful english dubbed dialogue, terrible american editing, and skewed up subtitles (to name a few). Of course, we sit through this patiently and truly enjoy a good exiciting original action film.

          Description

Barry Levinson made his directorial debut in 1982 with the coming-of-age classic Diner. It marked the first of his Baltimore films, which include Tin Men and Avalon. He has also directed such critical and commercial successes as Rain Man, Good Morning, Vietnam and Bugsy. Tonight, he is on to talk about his latest project, Wag the Dog, which stars Anne Heche, Robert DeNiro and Dustin Hoffman and has a screenplay written by David Mamet. The movie is about a Washington spin doctor who distracts the electorate from a presidential sex scandal by hiring a Hollywood producer to create a fake war.
