The King of Comedy, which flopped at the box office, is actually a gem waiting to be rediscovered. Like A Face in the Crowd (a not-so-distant cousin to this film), Network, and The Truman Show, its target is show business--specifically the burning desire to become famous or be near the famous, no matter what. Robert De Niro plays the emotionally unstable, horrendously untalented Rupert Pupkin, a wannabe Vegas-style comedian. His fantasies are egged on by Marsha, a talk-show groupie (brilliantly played by Sandra Bernhard) who hatches a devious, sure-to-backfire plan. Jerry Lewis is terrific in the straight role as the Johnny Carson-like talk-show host Jerry Langford. De Niro's performance as the obsessive Pupkin is among his finest (which is saying a lot) and he never tries to make the character likable in any way. Because there's no hero and no one to root for, and because at times the film insists we get a little too close and personal with Pupkin, some will be put off. Yet it's one of Scorsese's most original and fascinating films, giving viewers much to consider on the subject of celebrity. Its inevitable climax is clever and quietly horrific. --Christopher J. Jarmick
Description
Martin Scorsese's The King Of Comedy is a funny depiction of the dangers of celebrity fandom. Robert De Niro plays the ridiculously inept Rupert Rupkin, an aspiring comic who idolizes talk show host Jerry Langford (Jerry Lewis). Still living at home with his mother, Rupert spends his days trying to arrange a meeting with his hero. When he isn't doing that, he's at home talking to carboard cutouts in his makeshift television studio. After Rupert convinces Rita (Diahnne Abbot), a pretty bartender, that Langford has invited them to his house outside the city, the reality of the situation makes itself painfully apparent upon arriving at the star's front door. Trouble is, Rupert's too delusional to take the hint. He eventually hatches a plan with an equally obsessed fan, Masha (Sandra Berhard), to kidnap Langford in exchange for a chance to let him deliver his routine on the air.

Only Joel and Ethan Coen, the fraternal director and producer team behind art-house hits such as The Big Lebowski and Fargo and masters of quirky and ultra-stylish genre subversion, would dare nick the plot line of Homer's Odyssey for a comic picaresque saga about three cons on the run in 1930s Mississippi. Our wandering hero in this case is one Ulysses Everett McGill, a slick-tongued wise guy with a thing about hair pomade (George Clooney, blithely sending up his own dapper image) who talks his chain-gang buddies (Coen-movie regular John Turturro and newcomer Tim Blake Nelson) into lighting out after some buried loot he claims to know of. En route they come up against a prophetic blind man on a railroad truck, a burly, one-eyed baddie (the ever-magnificent John Goodman), a trio of sexy singing ladies, a blues guitarist who's sold his soul to the devil, a brace of crooked politicos on the stump, a manic-depressive bank robber, and--well, you get the idea. Into this, their most relaxed film yet, the Coens have tossed a beguiling ragbag of inconsequential situations, a wealth of looping, left-field dialogue, and a whole stash of gags both verbal and visual. O Brother (the title's lifted from Preston Sturges's classic 1941 comedy Sullivan's Travels) is furthermore graced with glowing, burnished photography from Roger Deakins and a masterly soundtrack from T-Bone Burnett that pays loving homage to American '30s folk styles--blues, gospel, bluegrass, jazz, and more. And just to prove that the brothers haven't lost their knack for bad-taste humor, we get a Ku Klux Klan rally choreographed like a cross between a Nuremberg rally and a Busby Berkeley musical. --Philip Kemp

Description

Disenchanted with the daily drudge of crushing rocks on a prison farm in Mississippi, the dapper, silver-tongued Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney, THE PERFECT STORM) busts loose. Except he's still shackled to his own chain-mates from the chain gang -- bad-tempered Pete (John Turturro, SUMMER OF SAM), and sweet, dimwitted Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson, HAMLET). With nothing to lose and buried loot to regain -- before it's lost forever in a flood -- the three embark on the adventure of a lifetime in this hilarious offbeat road picture. Populated with strange characters, including a blind prophet, sexy sirens, and a one-eyed Bible salesman (John Goodman, COYOTE UGLY), it's an odyssey filled with chases, close calls, near misses, and betrayal that will leave you laughing at every outrageous and surprising twist and turn.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing movie!.......2007-07-03

This is a classy release of an all-time-favorite classic. George Clooney played Batman, and here he's doing a hillbilly chicken dance in a fake beard. Great writing, great acting, great music. What's not to love? We wore out our VHS copy!

5 out of 5 stars something old, something new.......2007-06-30

Comedies don't get much better than this.

Clooney, Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson are relentlessly hilarious in this loosely Homeric epic of escape from a chain gang in America's early twentieth-century South. You can love this movie without knowing Homer, of course, though it's based on that bard's Oddysey.

That's the common touch of both Homer and his erstwhile partners-in-crime, producers Ethan and Joel Coen.

Filming this flick must have been more fun than a body should have. From the blind oracle on the railroad pump-car warning about the 'Ob-stackles of life' to the 'Sigh-REENS' that appear to have 'loved (Pete) up ... and then turned him into a horny toad' to the delicious stares and triumphant penultimate scene where the Soggy Bottom Boys regale a political rally with their irresistable hit 'Man of Constant Sorrows', O BROTHER never falters.

It's a film for watching over and over again, preferably introducing somebody who hasn't seen it each time you do.

Ne'er doubt! Buy O BROTHER WHERE ARE THOU and hold onto it for dear life.

O Brother Where Art Thou

Title: O Brother Where Art Thou
Director: Joel Coen
Release Date: 2000

Based on the epic by Homer, this movie takes place at the end of the Great Depression area of 1935. Three men named Everet (George Clooney), Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson), and Pete (John Turino), escape on a chain gang in southern Mississippi. When they escape, they meet a man that is blind from polyps that is similar to Homer. The man tells the three men that they must travel to seek the desire that they want. Everet thinks that the old man was making nonsense, but Delmar and Pete think that the old man was telling the truth in their future. The men do a lot of things in this movie such as getting saved, making a record, helping a thief in a bank robbery, and confronting the KKK. (Klu Klux Klan) This movie is rated PG- 13 so the adults might not want to let their kids want to watch the movie. They also have a great soundtrack that won a Grammy for soundtrack of the year. The movie has funny jokes that make you crack up laughing. George Clooney gives one of his best roles of his career. John Goodman guest stars in the movie as a con man that steals the men's money. The people who like funny country movies, this might be the movie for you. It won't be long until this movie will become apart of your DVD collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-04-10

I've given this movie more repeat views than maybe any other movie ever, for two reasons. Firstly, there is the incredible soundtrack--I was not a bluegrass fan until I fell in love with this movie, and the songs were good enough to win me over. Secondly, the dialogue is hilarious. Every time I watch it, I catch a little bit I may have missed before. Coens at their best. Made me rethink my opinion of George Clooney, as well.

2 out of 5 stars Worthwhile music, movie falls flat........2007-04-07

I think it's odd that the movie announces at the beginning that it's based on Homer's Odyssey, as the storyline barely follows in the theme of The Odyssey at all. The music is awesome and I reccomend the soundtrack, but honestly the movie didn't do it for me. Weak plot, annoying characters, lame ending. I just wasn't impressed at all.

They don't really make many romantic comedies like Notting Hill anymore--blissfully romantic, sincerely sweet, and not grounded in any reality whatsoever. Pure fairy tale, and with a huge debt to Roman Holiday, Notting Hill ponders what would happen if a beautiful, world-famous person were to suddenly drop into your life unannounced and promptly fall in love with you. That's the crux of the situation for William Thacker (Hugh Grant), who owns a travel bookshop in London's fashionable Notting Hill district. Hopelessly ordinary (well, as ordinary as you can be when you're Hugh Grant), William is going about his life when renowned movie star Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) walks into his bookstore and into his heart. After another contrived meet-cute involving spilled orange juice, William and Anna share a spontaneous kiss (big suspension of disbelief required here), and soon both are smitten. The question is, of course, can William and Anna reconcile his decidedly commonplace bookseller existence and her lifestyle as a jet-setting, paparazzi-stalked celebrity? (Take a wild guess at the answer.) Smartly scripted by Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral) and directed by Roger Michell (Persuasion), Notting Hill is hardly realistic, but as wish fulfillment and a romantic comedy, it's irresistible. True, Roberts doesn't really have to stretch very far to play a big-time actress who makes $15 million per movie, but she's more winning and relaxed than she's been in years, and Grant is sweetly understated as a man blindsided by love. Together, in moments of quiet, they're a charming couple, and you can feel her craving for real love and his awe and amazement at the wonderful person for whom he has fallen. The only blight on the film is its overbearing pop soundtrack, though Elvis Costello's heart-wrenching version of "She" gets poignant exposure. With Rhys Ifans as Grant's scene-stealing, slovenly housemate and Alec Baldwin in a sly, perfectly cast cameo. --Mark Englehart

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars classic romantic comedy.......2007-05-13

Notting Hill is a modern single man's fairy tale and I don't mean that in a bad way. Julie Roberts never looked better, Hugh Grant is his charming best, the supporting cast are all likeable. The story is believeable and beautifully directed. If your like romantic comedies or are just looking to watch a good movie that you will walk away from feeling good then "Notting Hill" is the movie for you.

5 out of 5 stars Love Conquers All in Notting Hill.......2007-05-10

This is a charming movie that I've seen several times and will probably see again. It's an upbeat, miracles happen, "celebrities are people too" kind of movie.

Boy meets girl, girl says "NO", then changes her mind. And keeps changing it. Anyone who has said "No", when his/her heart was yelling, "Yes Yes Yes ", can relate to this movie a lot.

One of the aspects that I found so interesting was the rigidly controlled structure under which Anna was required to live her life. And how relentlessly she had to smile, regardless of how she was feeling. It must be tough to have to be "on" so much of the time. NOTTING HILL gave us a window into the world in which celebrities live and some of the challenges they face.

This is a heartwarming, funny movie starring 2 talented actors playing 2 really likable characters. I have a weakness for movies with American/British romantic pairings, since Americans and Brits are culturally so different; in this movie, the plot is sweetened with the added romantic complication of wealthy/famous and not so wealthy or famous. It's a heartwarming rollicking ride !

I highly recommend Notting Hill.

5 out of 5 stars "Surreal, But Nice": Pleasant Romantic Comedy from Richard Curtis.......2007-04-18

Of course in real life this would not happen, at least not to me. William, owner of a small bookshop in Notting Hill, not only falls in love with a Hollywood star Anna Scott (played by Julia Roberts who is virtually playing herself), but also he really begins to go out with her. Can an ordinary guy be the true love of the star whose face covers magazines every week? Here is a one story, delightfully romantic and told with humor, about the possibility of such a romance. The story sounds implausible, but still a very good one.

Despite some incredible situations, the chemistry between the two leads makes us forget them temporarily, and their romance is enchanting (and a bit predictable) to the end. In addition to Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant (and their undeniable star power), the film is supported by gifted actors playing colorful characters; they are Gina McKee, James Dreyfus, Emma Chambers and inimitable Rhys Ifans as Spike, the most unusual lodger in London. Amusing cameos of Alec Baldwin, Matthew Modine and young Mischa Barton as child actor (like she was then) shoud not be missed.

Pleasant romantic comedy "Notting Hill" is written by Richard Curtis, whose works before this one include equally romantic "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and less successful "The Tall Guy," both of which are based on the American-in-London situations. His script of "Notting Hill" is always witty, giving us some sly comments on human relations and film industry. (In fact, I am using it as the text for my English class in Japan.)

Some people may say this is not real Notting Hill (you don't see Notting Hill Carnival, for example) and probably they are right because, as I said, in real London this would not happen. It belongs to the ever-overcrowding genre of romantic comedy where romance means a lot, and in this respect "Notting Hill" is a success.

Like its fellow HBO series Sex and the City, this half-hour comedy broke some TV rules and went from critics' darling to an award-winning series in three years. Curb Your Enthusiasm is the brainchild of star-creator Larry David who co-created Seinfeld and was the basis for the easily rattled George Costanza (who was played by Jason Alexander). Like George, David has a tendency to speak too much, blow things out of proportion, and, most often, fail in the end (and often liking it that way). David's new show is also like its predecessor: it's about "nothing" except following the day-to-day ramblings of a sometime writer and comic (this time in L.A.). Eternal questions stemming from universal daily dilemmas are honed to perfect comedic absurdity. A notable exception is the show is only scripted by plot; much of the action is improvised. The first season starts with a one-hour mockumentary following David's return to stand-up for the first time in years; the other 10 episodes follow a more traditional sit-com setup.

David plays "himself" (as does his friend, Richard Lewis) although his manager and wife are played by comedians Jeff Garlin and Cheryl Hines. Although this first season is a comedic gem, one can't take more than an episode or two at a time--it's acidic, biting comedy. The episodes are often built like a house of cards, which the irritable David will surely collapse by the end. Like another caustic TV character, Dabney Colman's Buffalo Bill (1983-84), Larry David is not for everybody. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Curb Your Enthusiasm Forever.......2007-06-11

This is the funniest series that is even better than Seinfeld itself. Highly recommended !

4 out of 5 stars Good follow-up to "Seinfeld".......2007-06-04

Larry David's life, as presented in this HBO series, is one long excruciating faux pas. The plot twists in this first season sometimes come across as a bit too forced and coincidental, an aspect that was greatly improved upon in the second season, but the most important question is: Are the laughs there? They certainly are. The criticism of some reviewers that a little Larry David goes a long way is well taken--your enjoyment of this series will depend on how you feel about him. I think he's funny. The episodes guest-starring Richard Lewis are doubly funny. They should make greater use of him as a foil for Larry. They have great chemistry with natural, unforced repartee.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant.......2007-05-28

If you ever enjoyed Seinfeld, you must get this. Larry David is clearly an intelligent and hilarious man with a fantastic imagination for the absurd--but real. Situations that have taken place in all of our lives are blown well out of proportion by David and the cast, which results in side-splitting comedy. The pacing is different than the laugh-a-minute sitcom style of Seinfeld (which I loved). However, the HBO format is great in terms of the way the show builds toward both expected and unexpected comical moments.

5 out of 5 stars very very funny.......2007-04-20

I love this show... It's fun to watch and try to predict what will go wrong for Larry next. I think "Curb Your Enthusiasm" is actually more amusing than laugh-out-loud funny, although it does have A LOT of those moments as well. In essence, if you liked Seinfeld, you might like this even better because the humor is very similar but the dialog is all improvised giving the show an authentic, documentary-style feel. I actually didn't think it was really that funny at first, but after watching a couple of episodes it kind of creeps up on you. Check it out if you haven't seen it.

1 out of 5 stars Totally unfunny.......2007-03-27

After reading the reviews I decided to invest in the first season of CYE. Can I say I was extremely disappointed, I know this show is mainly improvised with a loose script, but I would expect some funny moments at least. I pushed myself through the DVD set and there were no high points at all. A lot of reviews constantly say this is the "new seinfeld" or "seinfeld's successor"......sorry but seinfeld was by far the better show compared to this effort. Sadly the only highlight for me was Cheryl Hines.....but even her beauty would not save this show.

Director Martin Ritt (Norma Rae) helmed this offbeat romance that earned costar James Garner an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a widowed druggist who befriends a confused divorcee (Sally Field) and her son, who move to a small rural town to start over. The laid-back performance of Garner as a man finding love "for the last time in his life" contrasts wonderfully with Field's portrayal of a woman scared and unsure of what the future may hold for her, and the two of them together exhibit great comic timing. As well written and as deftly performed as any movie of its type, Murphy's Romance will rope you in with its winning style. --Robert Lane

This movie boggles the mind: no plot, no story even, no characters, nothing. Will she marry James Garner? Well, of course, she's going to marry James Garner! He's James Garner! Maybe you have to be a fan.

Well, I like Sally Field a lot, but she had no role worth playing in this slice of life. Slice of life is a hard enough thing to pull off, but when you pick such a dull life, it's a joke.

My advice: talk to someone you trust before you put your money on this movie.

5 out of 5 stars best romance.......2007-05-19

i loved this movie from the first time i saw it. james garner is my hero!!! older men are better!!!!

5 out of 5 stars one of those great movies.......2007-05-15

Another great feel good movie. These actors are amoung the best there is and the movie is up there with them. A great one to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Murphy's Romance-Sally Field.......2007-05-08

Sally Field and James Garner give an all star peformance in this movie. There is comedy, drama, and just great fun in watching this movie. Sally Field is a single mom trying to put her life back together. James Garner is the man that will help her to do it. This is a good, clean, all around family movie!!

During a downturn in his career, Al Pacino starred in this unfortunate comedy about a guy coping with a new romance, a house full of kids, and a new play--and doing a bad job of it. Pacino is a playwright who is convinced that he's about to have his first stage success. As opening night approaches, his wife bolts from the marriage, abandoning him with five kids (only one of whom is his). While he tries to juggle rewrites and a potential entanglement with a flighty actress and a demanding producer and director, he also has to solve his baby-sitting woes. Talk about trying to do it all. If only the material was as funny as Pacino, who may have made this film out of allegiance to its writer, Israel Horovitz, whose play The Indian Wants the Bronx gave Pacino one of his breakthrough roles in the early 1960s. --Marshall Fine

Description

Life is getting complicated for Broadway playwright Ivan Travalian (Pacino). His flaky wife Gloria (Weld) is moving in with her lover, his director hates his new play and his leading lady (Cannon) is a terrified movie star who's never been on the stage. With five children to look after (most of them Gloria's), a budding romance with his leading lady, and a producer (King) demanding a rewrite, it's no wonder the emotionally and financially unstable Ivan starts to exhibit all kinds of irrational behavior.

3 out of 5 stars a disappointing wait.......2007-06-28

I have waited for years for this movie to make it to DVD, only to be SO DISAPPOINTED with the treatment it recieved!! Not only is this a very good Al Pacino movie, but it is a very good movie period, so why when it is turned out on to DVD is it treated like a stepchild at a family reunion with the final scene left on the cutting room floor. I thought that the idea of DVD was to give the audiance what couldnt be give given on a 2 hour VHS tape, and the scene that was cut was one of the best in the film...when the kids bring him 'back down to earth' after the has spent his first day as a hit playwrite in bed. Guess I'm back to waiting for the 'soon to be released' Collector's or Deluxe Edition of this movie.

4 out of 5 stars A VERY GOOD PACINO FILM!.......2007-06-25

This is a very good movie. Pacino is so likable as a Broadway playwright who takes on the responsibility of being father for his son and various other children that his ex- wife drops off from time to time. A insightful comedy that is not that well know, but well worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars Good film but..............Don't be fooled.......2006-07-29

Well I love this film........................the video version........There is a problem with the dvd version and the version that has been shown on TV.......................It's missing the last scene..........If anyone has seen this film they will remeber after Ivan and the kids leave the resturant and read the review in the NY Times. The next scene is him in the waking up the next morning in bed and the kids are crowded around him with more reviews from newspapers and hitting him with a cake. Well that scene in cut from the dvd/tv showings. It ends when they read the NY Times review when they leave the resturant...........What A jip.............Now it's finally going to be relesed here in the US. I don't know if I'm going to get it. After seeing the import version. Also............the beginning credits is supposed to have the NY skyline as it's backdrop...................................No t here either.....................So I'm sticking with the original VHS version.........

4 out of 5 stars More entertaining that critics would have you think.......2006-02-14

Does this film seem dated? Sure. But it's very enjoyable to watch. Pacino, Alan King, and Dyan Cannon are obviously having good fun with their roles. Pacino channels a little Woody Allen as Armenian playwright Ivan Travalian (at one point he quips "you can always tell an Armenian; their last name rhymes with Armenian") with a mid-life crisis, a failing marriage, a new play to finish, and a stable full of kids (mostly from his soon-to-be-ex-wife's previous couplings) all with their own distinct personalities and issues. It makes a pretty nice comedy-drama jambalaya that doesn't hit any high marks, but is entertaining nonetheless. Look for delightful cameo roles by Bob and Ray as brothers investing in Travalian's play. Also worth noting is a young Eric Gurry who plays Pacino's oldest son and sometimes his father's caretaker. Apparently Gurry left films to become involved in the venture capital industry but this film shows he had some promise as an actor.

3 out of 5 stars Another Pacino part to be taken away by..........2006-02-07

This is a sweet, heart-strong film, and features a terrific performance from Al Pacino. Made a couple years after Kramer Vs. Kramer, it is similar in placing a loving father in the predicament of fighting for their children when his wife decides to leave them. Though this isn't about divorce, rather about the charm, pleasure and pressure of parenthood and a professional life.
Pacino and the kids are the best part, while the two women, his wife Gloria-mother to four of the five kids, sired by three different men, prior to Pacino's Ivan, and Alice Detroit-famous actress starring in his new Broadway play, have flimsier, partial characters to work with. Particularly Gloria, played by Tuesday Weld, is a heartless and troubled woman, but the film expresses her need to abandon men and children as her just "being who she is." This statement is made after Ivan tracks her down to bring her home to her kids, who could use a mother, during a good scene where it is brought home just who she is and what she is capable of. Still, it certifies her as a villain of less-than-justified-motivation. Alice Detroit, played by Dyan Cannon, is sweet and nice, swiftly starting an affair with Ivan, then just as swiftly moving in with him and the kids, but her part is ancillary too. The kids, particularly Igor, Ivan's only natural child, and Geraldo, the one kid who stays with him when the others return to their blood fathers, are terrific. The films scene with Ivan and the two boys is at it's best. Ivan is an orphan and his desire to raise and care for the kids is beautiful, an aspect of Pacino's character that hasn't been seen in a while.
Written by playwright Israel Horovitz, this is a good theatre-themed film too. As a writer struggling domestically and professionally it is fun and believable.
The music seemed oddly similar to "Tootsie" too. Anyway...
It seems like Pacino doesn't do this kind of work anymore. Like DeNiro in Stanley & Iris and Falling in Love, Gene Hackman in Twice in a Lifetime, Dustin Hoffman in Kramer Vs. Kramer, etc. The middle class/working class domestic drama/comedy. He is truly excellent in the part, which is low-key, true and sweet.

Product Description

The bases are loaded with laughs in the seventh season of The King of Queens! Doug (Emmy® nominated Kevin James) and Carrie Heffernan (Leah Rimini) continue their winning streak of comedy. Doug fakes cardiac arrest at Carrie's work event to cover up his inability to remember her co-workers' names. Carrie scores box seats to a Mets game, only to have Doug strike out with her boss. When Doug's parents come to town, Arthur (Jerry Stiller) is more than happy to entertain Doug's bored Mom. Arthur settles a decades old vendetta against a game show, solves a crime of a missing wallet and learns the power of digital photo editing. Carrie faces turning 35, Doug faces the DMV, and they both face an intense timeshare sales weekend. All this, plus guest stars like Burt Reynolds, Lou Ferrigno, Anne Meara and Hal Linden. It's a grand slam of laughs.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER EXCELLENT SEASON NOW IN WIDESCREEN!.......2007-06-07

I love this show. This season Carrie is having a hard time shedding those extra pounds and it does effect the show to a degree. We just don't want to see this little firecracker all bloated! This season was still great and the Widecreen works for me in my home theater,so I'm happy with that addition. The DVD set should be in every fans collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of My Favourite Sitcom ever! .......2007-06-01

I love this show, I don't understand why the don't sell this show on DVD in Australia like other shows aswell reba, and whole lot more. thank god for AMAZON.COM.

Doug (Kevin James) cracks me up. While Carrie (Leah Rimini) is always mad about him and they always fight. It's a classic Sitcom. I think it's funniest Sitcom ever. I think personally Season Seven was my favourite. includes episodes when Carrie takes a ipod without paying for it, Doug trys his hardest go to las vegas and lies to carrie and alot more episodes.

If your're thinking of buying it, don't think anymore this show is garunteed to crack you up!

3 out of 5 stars On a steady downhill slope...........2007-05-06

Pregnant Carrie wreaked havoc on this show's funny/sexy edge that it rides often. Say what you want about pregnant women being beautiful, but when I hear Carrie run her mouth about what she wants to do in bed... I have a hard time imagining it in the condition she's in through this season. (which I believe is post-pregancy without massive weight loss - unless she got pregnant twice in a row.)

I've seen later episodes, so I know it picks up in the 8th season. However, the comedy in this season was sliding pretty bad.

Arthur's character is one of the pieces that glues this whole thing together. He needs to be in almost every episode and play a large roll. Without him, its just not as funny. Think about that when you watch the DVD and compare episodes. You will see what I mean.

Kevin James in the man, and can do no wrong. Jerry Stiller makes me laugh til my stomach hurts. Leah Remini can only pull off the hot bichy roll when she is in fact hot.

5 out of 5 stars king of Queens Season 7 DVD.......2007-04-11

I am a huge fan of the show. "King of Queens" is one of the last remaining sitcoms. I know that it is airing its last 7 episodes starting this month and that is sad. IF you are a fan of the show I recommend this DVD along with the other seasons. This is a show that can be watched multiple times and still gets big laughs.

4 out of 5 stars Still the King of sitcoms.......2007-04-06

For many years now I have thought and still think that The King of Queens is the best sitcom out there.
The show has manage to hold a high quality throughout the years, altough
the later seasons have lacked a little bit of creativity. I still enjoy it very much but feels that the earlier seasons had a better "replay watching"
I still wish that they could add the option to have subtitles, but this is just a minor problem.
But in overall the seventh season still delivers laughter and joy to much satisfaction. Recommended.

The winning comic finesse of Reese Witherspoon drives Legally Blonde 2: Red White and Blonde. It's astonishing that the sequel could possibly be daffier than the first movie, but Legally Blonde 2 leaves reality behind like an unflattering outfit. Unemployed lawyer Elle Woods (Witherspoon) sets off to our nation's capitol to ban cosmetics testing on animals, after discovering that her beloved chihuahua's own mother is being used as a test subject. Washington, D.C., becomes a testing ground for Elle's mettle, as she grapples with callous committees, backstabbing representatives, and devious aides to get her bill considered by Congress, with some help from her sorority sisters and her hairdresser friend Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind). Witherspoon bursts with charisma and dazzles with sheer performing skill; she's the comic heir to screwball comedienne Carole Lombard--which is high praise. Also featuring Bob Newhart and Sally Field. --Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars A Real Disappointment.......2007-01-17

I purchased this DVD a few years ago and still have not watched it all. I really enjoyed the first Legally Blonde movie. I am a fan of Reece Witherspoon and have several of her movies in my DVD collection.I found her performance as Elle totally over the top! Who ever wrote this script turned Elle into some kind of superhuman. Elle has the ability to change how Washington operates just by being Elle. (complete with the stupid snap cup congress voting routine)

Although the cast was great, the script and the directing was sub-par. The director added a pink glow above Elle's head whenever she was in a scene. This was pointed out by the director in the DVD extra segment.Did he get this idea from Touched by an Angel? Thank goodness they never made Legally Blonde 3.Although Elle Woods' movie career maybe over,Reece Witherspoon's career continues to shine!I believe she has totally outgrown her Legally Blonde chararcter.

4 out of 5 stars Laugh a Little.......2006-11-16

Even if you missed Legally Blonde, this comedic outing is just for fun and can stand alone. Elle Woods takes on the Washington insiders and keeps coming out on top through a combination of sheer luck, connections, and by blondely working out the problems based on her earlier sorority experience.

Somewhat dippy, but fun anyway. I thought the grand speech didn't really have what it took to bring about the happy ending, but hey, you have to suspend your brain a bit with this story anyway.

Enjoy it for what it is and don't expect great literature, just a fun little film.

The DVD included some interesting interviews with the actors and director.

Friday is the rarest specimen of African American cinema: a 'hood movie refreshingly free of the semiseriousness and moralism of shoot 'em up soaps such as Boyz N the Hood, yet still true to the inner-city experience.

Scripted by rapper Ice Cube, Friday is a no-frills tale of a typical day in the life of a pair of African American youth in South Central. Cube plays Craig, a frustrated teen who endures the ultimate humiliation: getting fired on his day off. Then unknown Chris Tucker plays Smokey, a marijuana-worshipping homeboy whose love for the green stuff lands him in predicament after predicament.

Sitting on the stoop of Craig's rundown home, the two hilariously confront a kaleidoscopic array of gangbangers, weed dealers, crack heads, prostitutes, scheming girlfriends, and neighborhood bullies--all of whom, it should be noted, come off as sympathetic even as they are being caricatured, a true achievement in the crass, "booty call" environment of '90s African American comedy. --Ethan Brown

5 out of 5 stars Very funny movie.......2007-05-21

This is a great movie...simiple...funny...just a day in the life of some young guys who are bored. Most people can relate.

4 out of 5 stars "Can I borrow y'all VCR? I need to dub a tape...".......2007-03-01

I've seen this movie many and I mean many times. It's very funny and it simply shouldn't be analyzed. A plot doesn't exist in this comedy, nor is this a character-driven vehicle, but it's a wild ride from start to finish without much of a high budget.

"Friday" is an urban comedy that depicts a single day in the life of Craig (Ice Cube), who has just been fired on his day off. Craig's off day consists of interactions with various characters in the neighborhood. They include his cantankerous dad (John Witherspoon); his lovable mother (Anna Maria Horsford); his sister Dana (Regina King); his spoilt girlfriend Joi (Paula Jai Parker); his love interest (Nia Long); Deebo (Tiny "Zeus" Lister Jr.) the hulking neighborhood bully; Big Worm (Faizon Love) the neighborhood gangster; and his token friend Smokey (Chris Tucker).

There's not a lot that can be said about the acting and most of the help comes from the supporting characters. Such as, Chris Tucker who steals the show with his landmark role as ultra-pothead Smokey. Tucker has that unrelenting comic energy that only a comedian of supreme talent can possess. Even when the film falls flat, he picks you back up. I also have to commend John Witherspoon, as Ice Cube's father. I loved him on "The Wayans Bros." and I loved him in this movie. Though I was laughing most of the time, the gags are indeed crude--very crude. And sometimes that crudeness just wears out. Luckily, it's not too often, and there are some memorable lines and memorable moments in "Friday."

I feel as though this is one of the better movies about the hood. It' really more than just a comedy instead it puts forth a deeper meaning in life. It is about facing one's fears and becoming a man. In one scene, the father sees Craig with a gun and tells him that holding a gun won't make him man; it's having the courage to fight with his fists that will. Now, I know this doesn't sound like the greatest thing for a parent to be telling his kid, but in the projects fighting with one's hands instead of picking up a gun is courageous. This movie is great to own as well as the Ice Cube-based sound track.

this movie, i think is the funniest of the 3 because it has chris tucker. i cant belive its still funny after all these years. the fact that its on dvd just made me so exited i bought it just to watch it over a hundred times. it has alot of the best actors today. chris tucker, mia long, ice cube, burnie mac amog many others. i recomend this movie to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-01-07

This movie is one of the Classics for anyone that was a teenager or in their early 20's back in the mid 90's. Its almost a have to have for the DVD Collection. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Instant Classic - Made Chris Tucker a star................2007-01-02

What would life be without your slacker homeboys? It seems like they take life less serious and have all of the fun. At least that's what this hood classic is about when Craig gets fired on his day off for allegedly stealing boxes. So Smoke Dog comes to save the day with a little of that sticky icky. Problem is that the weed belongs to Big Worm. The rest is hood comedy at its finest.

DJ Pooh steals the show as the lame who gets punked by Debo. Hilarious!

Larry McMurtry's novel becomes a somewhat lumpy film as directed by James L. Brooks (As Good As It Gets). Nevertheless, it is entirely winning, with Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger playing a combative mother and daughter who see each other through various ups and downs in love and loss, and most especially through a terminal illness endured by Winger's character. Jack Nicholson deservedly won an Oscar for his supporting role as a free-spirited astronaut who backs away from a romance with MacLaine and then returns in the clutch. As he always does, Brooks keeps things from getting too soapy with his intense concentration on the soulful evolution of his characters. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars AHEAD OF ITS TIME.......2007-03-29

This 1983 release was ahead of its time. It most definitely has a message for today's society. I did not so much GET it over twenty years ago when viewing it in the theater as I did when watching it on the DVD as a middle aged movie buff. Shirley MacLaine plays a somewhat flighty but still most desirable middle aged woman whose conflict with her sweet if not naive daughter, played by Debra Winger, is sometimes stormy but always loving. Jack Nicholson, as the next door neighbor, is outstanding as always and is a sleezy womanizing former astronaut who befriends Ms. MacLaine but by movie's end it is clear he loves her and is perhaps a changed man. A younger Jeff Daniels is convincing as Winger's cheating husband as is John Lithgow as the man taken with her innocent charms. This movie will make you laugh and cry and the musical score is one you will never forget. All serious movie buffs should have a copy of this.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless.......2007-03-13

Exactly how in the world did I never see this movie before? Reputation has made this out to be "the ultimate chick flick" upon which every other tear-jerker is judged. But it's definitely more of a character study than a weepy mushy movie. In fact, it's anything but mushy. Where it could of been over-sentimental, it was poignant. Where it could of been boring, it was insightful. And where it could of been corny, it was tongue-in-cheek. I don't think I need to say anything about the acting in it, if you've seen Terms of Endearment you know that Shirley MacLaine, Debra Winger, and Jack Nicholson bring their characters to a life rarely seen in movies. I just can't get over how great this movie was. The story is so good, it's so funny and at times among some of the saddest moments I've ever seen portrayed in the movies. I don't want to go any further for fear that I might spoil it for those who haven't seen this incredible story about life and love and laughter among family. This is an AMAZING and moving film!

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie!.......2007-03-08

I'd never seen it before, and was so pleased. Very quirky, but great.

5 out of 5 stars tear jerker .......2006-12-19

This movie will break your heart but only because the characters are so real. It truly the captures the tumultous relationship between independent daughters and controlling mothers. The good and the bad.

2 out of 5 stars One of the top five "chick-flicks" of all time........2006-12-14

Sometimes popular culture idolizes something, whether it be a book, a movie, or a record; where I just don't "get it." I have to ask myself: Is it just me? What do people see in this? For the life of me I cannot understand why a melodramatic piece of twaddle like "Bridges of Madison County" was a hit. I don't see what the big thrill about Madonna is either. She absolutely can't act. Her records are put together for her by producers. They crowd the stage with dancers and special effects in her concerts, in hopes you don't notice how little talent she really has.
She doesn't write her own songs. She doesn't play any instruments. She doesn't have a strong voice. Compared to someone like Sheryl Crow, who writes all her own material, plays most of the instruments, and has a very strong voice, Madonna is a poseur. I really have to wonder about anyone who would view her as anything other than a egomaniacal twit.
And please, don't even get me started on Bruce Springsteen.

Which brings me to "Terms of Endearment." What is so hard to understand about the fact that your average American male doesn't care about "Women, and their relationships with their mothers"? I don't know of any man under the age of 40 who would sit through something like this movie, unless he thought it would help put his wife or girlfriend "In the Mood", and that he would reap the benefit later that evening. The characters aren't all that sympathetic. Debra Winger is supposed to elicit sympathy as the dying cancer sufferer, but she's such a whiny bitch it's hard to feel it. Shirley MacLaine is so obnoxious you just want to punch her right in the face. Jeff Daniels is a clueless career student who becomes a college teacher so he doesn't have to go out in the real world to make a living. The one bright spot for me was Jack Nicholson, but even his bright moments are too few and far between. Terms of Endearment isn't a awful movie, but I don't think it deserved anywhere near the accolades it got. No one can tell me that Shirley Mac deserved the best actress oscar over Meryl Streep in "Silkwood". Absolutely one of the most overrated films ever.

Hungry for a laugh? The BBC serves up more than a few chuckles in this engaging sitcom about imperious chef Gareth Blackstock (Lenny Henry), a stern taskmaster who runs his kitchen with an iron fist, a lightning tongue, and a silver palate. The show combines some of the best elements of episodic drama and zany comedy, generously seasoned with sensual splashes of fine French cuisine. (Picture Julia Child crossed with Fawlty Towers' John Cleese following a script by the creators of thirtysomething and you get the general idea.) Blackstock is a brilliant, egotistical black chef running an all-white kitchen--until, that is, his wife maneuvers him into hiring an old school chum. Challenges mount as the restaurant faces bankruptcy and Blackstock decides to risk everything to buy it. Could fulfilling his dream wind up costing the king of the kitchen his home and savings? Supported by a talented ensemble cast, the dramatic story arc develops gradually enough to keep viewers wanting more, while individual episodes rest on more traditional sitcom gags--like when the new apprentice chef loses a Band-Aid somewhere in the kitchen but can't tell which gourmet dish it landed in. Later, Blackstock, the ultimate perfectionist, devises his most perfect mouthwatering meal and scours the shady underside of England's green and pleasant countryside for the perfect closer... the king of cheeses, an illegal unpasteurized stilton. Gradually the supporting characters are given more room to grow--especially charming young Everton (Roger Griffiths), the bumbling, insecure prep cook. When Blackstock's boorish Jamaican father (Oliver Samuels) browbeats the "serious professional" into abandoning haute cuisine for a night featuring Caribbean food, it's Everton's legendary dumplings that save the day. (Watching him carefully prepare his Guinness punch might be worth the price of the set alone.) Those expecting the surreal hysteria of Monty Python or similar classic British comedies might not care for Chef's subtleties, but those interested in quality television mixed with fine food and sprinkled with a few decent laughs will be more than satisfied by what this show has to offer. --Grant Balfour

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!!.......2007-06-25

I AM A BIG FAN OF BRITISH COMEDIES AND THIS SHOW IS ONE OF THE BEST! LENNY HENRY IS AMAZING IN THIS SHOW. IF YOU LOVE GREAT COMEDY THIS IS THE DVD FOR YOU. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!

5 out of 5 stars A very true to life depiction of an actual chef....and it's hilarious..........2007-04-08

This is a masterful comedy, especially the first two seasons. It's probably the only comedy to really ever present a chef as they really are (at least the good ones). The culinary arts are just like any other art forms, and the better the chefs are, the more difficult they can be. It's like working for a great filmmaker, great writer, etc., etc.. Lenny Henry is brilliant as Gareth, the fantastic, yet incredibly tempremental chef. The writing here is first rate, and the best thing about this series is that the lead character is not likeable, yet you enjoy watching him anyway. This is actually a very realistic depiction of what an actual chef would go through. Gareth hardly sleeps, he has little or no social life, he insults his customers as well as his staff, but he knows food, and he's in his kitchen 12-16 hours a day. You can constrast this series with the godawful American sitcom Freddie (with Freddie Prinze, Jr.). He played a chef as well, but in the few episodes that actually made it to air, all he ever did was go to bars and hit on women with his business partner Brian Austin-Green, and spent most of his time in his apartment with his wise cracking grandma and bratty sister. The writers of Freddie didn't do an ounce of research, and it shows. In Chef, they actually did research. It's nice to see a realistic depiction of a chef, and it's still damn funny. The first two seasons are the best in my opinion. The third one isn't as bad, but the first two had better writing, and were shot on film. The third one was shot on video, and Gareth was a little too nice to others in it, like they tried to make the character likeable, which doesn't work. Still, this is still brilliant television.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-04-02

One of the best BBC series; certainly the most enjoyable. Third season lacks a bit of the comedy genius of the first, but the entire series is worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2007-03-14

Excellent British comedy? Yes. Excellent writing and acting? Yes, most definitely! But for me, these stories and/or the series I LIVED for 14 years!! These shows (along with Anthony Bourdain or Michael Ruhlman writings) are the most accurate description of what it is REALLY like to work a fine dining restaurant. There is little, in my opinion, that is over-exaggerated. It's funny, yet brilliant and real! Lenny Henry was on his game in this, and I am glad he brought these out so we could all enjoy over and again.

5 out of 5 stars Chef! is absolutely delicious.......2007-01-10

I love to watch these over and over. And, it's the entire series--every episode. Each time I watch them, I hear something I missed the time before. Lenny Henry is brilliant. Many of the lines are worth repeating. When arguing with my husband, I often steal Chef's quote: "Your silence is disturbing eloquent". Five stars!
