Heartbreakers wants to be a distaff variation of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, compensating for lack of intelligence with ample cleavage provided by Sigourney Weaver and (especially) Jennifer Love Hewitt. This alone should draw plenty of drooling guys who will enjoy the scenery and affirm the movie's depiction of men as lecherous idiots. And what scenery it is! Gussied up in trampy glamour, Weaver and Hewitt play mom-and-daughter grifters with a devious routine: Max (Weaver) lures wealthy cads into marriage, and then daughter Page (Hewitt) seduces them, so Mom can discover the infidelity and fleece the chump in divorce court. They've just scammed the boss of a hot-car ring (Ray Liotta) and now it's on to Palm Beach, Florida, where they'll dupe a wheezing tobacco baron (Gene Hackman) and retire to the good life. Or so they think...

Armed with the same airheaded humor he brought to Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, director David Mirkin relies on the clichéd notion that sex turns all men into morons--a conceit that would have worked if the dialogue and sitcom antics were more convincing. As Page's would-be paramour, Jason Lee is rendered intellectually inert, and it's hit-or-miss from that point forward. When the humor hits--as it does with Nora Dunn's rendition of a horrible housemaid--Heartbreakers hints at its full potential. Additional plot twists--not to mention Hewitt's microskirts and Wonderbras--may hold your attention, but you may find yourself harkening back to Steve Martin, Michael Caine, and those happier high jinks on the French Riviera. Singer-songwriter Shawn Colvin has a cameo role as the wedding priest. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Funny, a riot, on a difficult theme .......2007-06-02

HEARTBREAKERS offers a story rarely touched upon, is a good comedy, a
riot, in fact, such that many may not be able to not laugh out loud,
mainly from the curious aspects in the dialog, other times from the
quality of the acting, especially from Ray Liotta, and Gene Hackman,
both marks of the confidence ladies played by Sigourney Weaver, and
Jennifer Love Hewitt.

The marketing of the movie is succesful in the sense that the movie
delivers exactly was promised, in terms of comedy, quality acting
from veteran, proven successful actors, that relaxes the audiences,
and leaves them wondering how realistic is the behavior shown on
screen.

The controversial theme has a dual edge to it, with some finding it
objectionable to laugh at dispicable, insidious behavior, which is
the entrapment of single moderately wealthy to rich men, creating
incidents for divorce, and laughing all the way to the bank,
afterwards.

Other behaviors also covered are several examples shown in the
movie, such as freeloading at restaurants, hotel rooms, gas stations,
reinforcing the above analysis.

These pro's are experts in creating totally believable circumstances,
manipulating their mark's thought processes, to forgone conclusions,
which they carry out in public, or even among themselves, quite
surprisingly or not.

The cinematography is not too far from TV-like, but still has the
necessary ingredients to please most audiences, with a nice
wide-screen format, and a momentum that never lets down in terms of
action.

The critics to this movie, as well, may touch also upon the exuberant
youth projected by Hewitt, sometimes excessively so, compromising the
overall project's credibility in terms of acting, but also in terms
of the type of audience this picture will command, probably those
below 17 years of age. This stems from condoning the behavior of the
two ladies. I would not underestimate Hewitt, despite this.

Other questionable, or unnecessary aspects is the excess libido that
is relentlessly demonstrated on screen, suggesting that nobody can
shield themselves from their basic instincts, or avoid being played
on that basis, which is obviously a flawed theory. Some may find
HEARTBREAKERS somewhat sleazy, although the goal is to underline the
comedy aspect, the easy laughs that for some, may find gets old fast
over 90 mins.

Apart from the greed shown, thoughtless adultery is suggested as part
of ladies behavior as a necessary evil in their setups, which may
also be objectionable to some.

The only morality in this story, is Liotta, despite his own mobster
type of persona, vocabulary, mannerisms tells the ladies "Do you have
any idea how much therapy you need ? ", later telling them one thing,
but doing another, when he plays into their hands, as he is
manipulated and capitulates to their domination.

For those who appreciate comedy, even on a difficult theme like this
one, HEARTBREAKERS will win them over, if not for the charisma,
professionalism, and skill brought into the picture by Weaver,
Hewitt, and Hackman. Funny, a riot over 90 mins.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't quite get off the ground.......2006-05-18

This film has its moments, mainly the occasional funny one-liner, but unfortunately it never quite seems to get off the ground. I like all the main actors/actresses, but there's very little on-screen chemistry between them, although they do things to Gene Hackman that you normally don't get to do to him on-screen. The concept of two beautiful, scamming sisters is funny enough, but as I said, the movie just doesn't quite make it work. And Sigourney Weaver's fake Russian accent during part of the movie is as phoney as a two-dollar bill, although I'm a fan of Weaver, who Hollywood never could seem to figure out how to make a lasting star. If you're a fan of Weaver or Hackman (who is good as an eccentric old tobacco billionaire), you'll probably still want to see it, but wait for it to come out on HBO. Actually, the funniest thing was the commentaries on the DVD about how the movie was made. That did provide some comic relief and insight into the movie.

3 out of 5 stars FUNNY FOR HALF ITS LENGTH, THEN A FOG OF INDECISION.......2006-04-17

For a chick-flick, the film does well to aim no higher than some shallow raunchy old fun. There is enough air in the beginning romp to draw you in. It is only when you find yourself predicting exact lines and jokes that you begin to wonder if there is much meat left past the first hour.

As the mother in a mother-daughter con-woman pair, Sigourney Weaver is by turns comical and lascivious. Subjective opinion: I found her significantly more fetching than the younger Jennifer Love Hewitt, who is pesky as usual but teenagers and brain candy diehards may find her entertaining in that lightly adoloscent way. Liotta I simply feel sorry for, what a tragic waste of Goodfellas calibre talent. Gene Hackman serves reliably as an aging stumblebum, but gets no more than ten minutes of actual screentime.

The theme has an unmistakable halo of the much sharper Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which leaves one hoping for that clever twist that never quite materializes. Instead the film breaks into a half-bummed pondering of profound issues: the need for the mother to Let Go, the importance of true love that trumps a grifter's dayjob, and suchlike. All of which is ham-handed and tacked on to the last hour in a rush.

At best a fluffy rental for evenings when nothing else is on. Know that you are watching a light chick-flick and you will do fine.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2006-03-30

This movie is laugh-out-loud hilarious! Sigourney and Jennifer are the perfect, scheming mother-daughter duo. Ray Liotta was great as the crooked, but head-over heels, love interest for Sigourney, while Gene outdid himself as the cough-out-a-lung millionaire she tried to marry. I even loved the maid!

But, I must give the biggest kudos to Jason Lee (My Name Is Earl) as the heartthrob who steals Jennifer's heart and gets her to change her evil ways.

This movie deserves nothing less than 5 stars since it did something which very few "comedies" do for me - it allowed me to laugh out loud! You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars One of my personal favorite comedies ever!!!!!!.......2006-03-02

I love this movie the first time I watched it...In 2001, it was very original and it's very funny, because sometimes they have to do disgusting things and those things are just hilarious!!
Besides, Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt are both amazing actresses, and they both made their roles very good and very convincingly...One thing we have to face: this is one of those typical "stupid movies" in which all the cast do is funny, but let's face another thing: PEOPLE LOVE THAT!!! I totally agree with the other reviewer who said that he/she almost choaked on him/herself...maybe the people who ranked this movie with 1 star haven't even watched it, but only they know.

Buy it, you'll have so much fun watching it over and over again, because it's not just the jokes, it's the attitude the girsl have when they do those things.

If your ideal concert experience depends on flashpots, lasers, and fabulous costumes, turn back now. On the other hand, if you're looking for no-frills, straight-ahead rock & roll played with good humor and passion, you've come to the right place. Filmed in March '99 at San Francisco's legendary Fillmore and seen here in letterbox format with great sound, High Grass Dogs finds Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers in fine form, charging through a series of tunes from the guitarist-singer-songwriter's first album ("Breakdown") to his latest (four tunes from Echo). Petty's core musicians (guitarist Mike Campbell, bassist Howie Epstein, and keyboardist Benmont Tench) have been together for so long that their onstage communication is almost telepathic; the emphasis is always on dynamics and interplay instead of bombast. There may not be any surprises here, with the possible exception of an appearance by Bo Diddley on his own "Mona," but that's a good thing. Indeed, the only mystery may be where Petty came up with that weird title. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars I MADE THE CUT!.......2007-06-12

I had to have this DVD! After receiving many phone calls from people telling me that I was "all over the Fillmore dvd", I finally got it for myself! My friends and I went to night after night of this historic run at the Fillmore (one of two long runs in a couple of years that they did). I don't think Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were ever before or have since been so good! And I've been seeing them since I was 15 (now 42!). Unbelievable shows. Rock and roll doesn't get any better! It was a shining moment for both the Fillmore and TP and the HB's. Get your copy of this.....kind of like a little slice of rock and roll history. Not quite "The Last Waltz", but still amazing! In fact, it was one of the last shows where we slept in line for the tickets.....before the computer took the social aspect out of waiting in line with your fellow fans! Nowadays the tickets would be "auctioned" to the highest bidder......at the Fillmore, it was those of us who really wanted to be there bad enough to sleep on a cold sidewalk and get in the front rows to be included in the DVD!

This DVD is really amazing, the song selection is perfect and the playing is crazy great. Everyone is awesome in this filming, at the historic Fillmore. THis even features Bo Diddley with the heartbreakers playing mona, one of the best on the DVD. Tom even jokes around some between songs. Please buy this, you wont be dissapointed. THis is pure Rock 'n' Roll.

Description

The work of Tom Petty is a uniquely-American blend of pop and rock that has paid handsome dividends for the star over the years. With his faithful band The Heartbreakers behind him, Petty lit up stages across the country, and became an unlikely early star of MTV with some innovative video work. Subsequent releases saw him justifiably included in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, alongside a stint in supergroup The Travelling Wilburys. SOUNDSTAGE presents a live concert from Petty and his band, with a number of their biggest hits getting a welcome airing.

5 out of 5 stars Petty kills at SoundStage........2007-03-17

Well, i tell u 1 thing. Petty kills at SoundStage. The dvd is great, & at a good time in the band's life together, and Lord knows, they've been together for a long time. The show is well made, and the colors & sound are top quality. Recommended video, fur sure.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible, Hey Tom, I hate getting old to okay? .......2006-10-20

Having seen Tom in the 80's and this was one of my all time concerts of the 80's, Mike smoked on the guitar! I was maybe 20 yards away right in front of him, and I went to dozens of concerts from many bands, this is slowwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Yes I know, we all get old. I can believe that, as I am, too. It was painful to watch this whole concert, I kept nodding off, "HUH? its still on?"

And this dvd is NOT closed Captioned, not cool.

But I am not the one that has a 80's concert on VHS ONLY and sinse DVD's have been out for what, 10 years now? and so many bands have updated their VHS to DVD, Tom, its time to

Release Pack up the Plantation: Live in dvd NOW! And dont forget to Closed Caption it!!!

The first disc works fine but the second disc in the Sound Stage package doesn't work at all! Nothing but blue screen and a error message saying :incorrect disc c-104. I would like a replacement for disc # 2 that works? Sincerely Anita Poling

4 out of 5 stars Great sound, picture, and (non) editing.......2006-01-15

The good news here is that the sound quality is excellent, the picture quality is very clear, and the concert is just shown in a normal, natural way - as it should be. That last part might be taken for granted, but too often concert videos can be ruined by herky-jerky fast-cut editing that attempts to make the show more "interesting". Which is really stupid, because if someone is watching the concert, they just want to see and hear the band, not clever editing or lengthy fan shots. Rest assured that this video presents the band itself as the entertainment, not the editing or the crowd. A very good thing.

Since the sound, picture, and editing are so good, I'm tempted to give this 5 stars. But it gets only 4 from me for various reasons. One is that there are 9 "cover" songs here vs. 13 written by Petty/Heartbreakers. Given that the band's own songs are so great, I don't like hearing so many covers, which I consider to be of lesser quality than the band's own songs. If more Petty & Heartbreakers DVD's were available covering the band's own songs, this wouldn't be such a problem. But since this is only one of 3 existing DVDs from the band, "too many" covers is a minor quibble. Then there's the drummer situation. Original drummer Stan Lynch was very creative, yet stayed completely "in synch" with the rest of the band - which made his drumming a big part of the Heartbreaker's success. His replacement, Steve Ferrone, is "ok" but not great, and often seems to lack the cohesion that Lynch had with the rest of the band. So I feel to a great extent that without Stan Lynch on drums, this isn't really THE Heartbreakers. Finally, the price on this set is slightly high, so for all these reasons I can't give the set a full 5 stars.

Still, true fans of the band (and yes I'm one) should definitely get this. I like this a lot better than "High Grass Dogs" (which is very poorly edited, and not great sounding), and it's close to "Live at the Olympic". I do somewhat prefer "Olympic" to this one, mainly because the songs on that one were written by Petty himself (and it's also great sounding and well edited). It's a shame that there aren't more/better concert DVD choices though for a band with such a rich history as this one. My favorite official TP & Heartbreakers concert video was 1991's "Take the Highway", but that's never been on DVD, and now it's not even available on VHS. Same situation with 1985's "Pack up the Plantation", though I didn't like that one as much as "Highway", due both to its jerky editing, as well as the overbearing presence of a horn section and backup singer/dancers. Both of those concerts should be on DVD now though, it's a shame they aren't. And I suppose it would be too much to ask for some of the Heartbreakers' European (or American) tv appearances to be released onto DVD, but they should be too - after all, 20+ year old European shows from Blondie, The Cars, and Bruce Springsteen (among others) have been officially released recently to DVD, so why not something from TP & the Heartbreakers?

5 out of 5 stars An Unbelievable Experience!.......2005-11-30

This is by far the most comprehensive and beautifully filmed footage of Tom & the Heartbreakers yet! The combination of the perfect song selection and crowd reaction makes this something you can enjoy over and over. It is the closest thing to having been at the show -- and yes, Brett, we all are so lucky to have this as such a vivid memory of our fellow bee, Jill, doing what she loved - rocking out!
This is an absolute must-have for your TPATH collection. I speak for all of us that were there in saying that this was one of the most outstanding concert experiences ever!!!! Buy it for fans, non-fans, especially your kids. . . they'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars This is the best music video collection that I bought this year.......2007-06-14

I was surprised at how good this DVD video collection of Tom Petty turned out to be. You know, some artists have some great songs but really lame videos (Billy Joel, The Police, Rush, INXS, Bruce Springsteen), but then there are some artists who have better videos than their songs (Bjork, Sade, Supertramp, Kate Bush, Abba, Genesis, Weird Al Yankovic). But, this DVD collection from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers really caught me off guard. I enjoy the hell out of every video here. I've even taken to enjoy some songs more now that I've seen the video that compliments the song.

I never realized before how Tom Petty has such a unique sense of humor. I thought he was just another punk rebel when he first started out. But....No! He's quite an influence to all that what MTV came to be. He's quite a genius and definitely has a right to be working with Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and Roy Orbison (remember The Traveling Wilbury's?).

I was already interested in the song and video of "Don't Come Round Here No More". But, I was amazed at what else we have here. "Jammin' Me" is an awesome song and video. And then there is "I Won't Back Down" which definitely sounds very George Harrison influenced. And why not? George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Jeff Lynne are all on this song and video. Really Cool! Plus there's "Into the Great Wide Open" which is a video with Johnny Depp and Faye Dunaway which makes you think it came from some film. Same goes for Kim Basinger in his video of "Mary Jane's Last Dance".

Too bad there isn't any videos here for "Breakdown", "Don't Do Me Like That", "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" (with Stevie Nicks) or "You Don't Know How it Feels." Tom Petty does have a video here with Stevie Nicks called "Insider." It's kinda okay.

Well, this DVD is definitely a welcomed addition to my music DVD library. I have people to share this with who I know are going to love it. You can party with one. Crank it up!

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Music Videos.......2007-04-01

It goes without saying that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were at the forefront of the music video from its emergance as a popular means of getting your record wider exposure to being afforded many accolades and respect for contributions to the medium.

If Tom and the Heartbreakers had a hit video they would have a hit record. This collection begins with the early band orientated performance videos from the Damn The Torpedoes period. The "You Got Lucky" video is very notable in that it was decided to film a little intro before the song started. Not even Michael Jackson did that at the time. By the close of the 80's Tom's videos were not to be missed, they were appealing, well crafted just as the bands songs were. "Don't Come around Here No More" gained wide popular acclaim.

5 videos came from the Full Moon Fever period which no suprise went hand in hand with Tom's resurgance in the late 80's that continued into the 90's where the collection finishes.

"Into the Great Wide Open" features Johnny Depp and Faye Dunaway. Petty was offered to make the video into a feature film. It was already was the reply.

The award winning "Mary Jane's Last Dance" featured Kim Basinger providing something different and sinister to the Petty video collection.

This collection stops there, covering only the MCA years. Petty and the band continued to release videos, until recently, as part of Petty's stance as an artist who will not be taken advantage off for financial gain, he has ceased filming these videos for his singles.

It is back to band promo films for Tom and the Heartbreakers. Their history in film is documented best in Playback.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Tom Petty fans.......2007-01-18

My son is a big Petty fan and has really enjoyed the Playback set!

    4 out of 5 stars Good Review.......2007-01-04

I found this to be well recorded and a nice collection of tunes bringing you from the start of his career until recently. I'd buy it again.

5 out of 5 stars very satisfied customer.......2006-09-06

I absoulutely loved this DVD! It's chronological, well-organized and you can see alot of Tom's personality by watching him. I love "Here Comes My Girl" where Stan, the drummer sings mockingly to Tom the words "here comes my girl" and you see Tom's eyes for a split second like he's saying "knock it off, Stan" with a ever-slight smurk. Later in the CD he hugs another member. His warmth, humor and depth of charactor shows forth in this DVD. The sound quality is great and I love their pick of songs. I would like to see a 2nd one released with "Room at the Top" and others including his recent "Saving Grace" from his Highway Companion CD.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Petty - A DVD With Meaning And Hope........................2003-11-02

A wonderful DVD with songs that link together a great concept story-line. Mr. Petty speaks his mind to the "Powers That Be" (Joe CEO) that are more interested in the flash in the pan artists that sell their smile (Making Joe CEO Rich) instead of quality music. The music and the lyrics are great. I found the production value to be superior. The additional CD of live music rocks as well. A great value, that I picked up for under fifteen dollars (new). Dreamville is the place to be.........

    5 out of 5 stars Writing while I'm Watching.......2003-10-21

I am not sure who amazes me more, Tom Petty or every other member of this band. This concert shows why rock and roll will never die. Tom Petty, "old and bitter"? I think not. Fortunately for us, he seems to keep getting better. The sound makes this DVD - but how visual do you need to be at a Tom Petty and the HB's concert anyway!

5 out of 5 stars Tom Petty is The Man!.......2003-09-23

For the true Tom Petty fan, this is a must. I have not been able to see TP & the HP's in concert in years and this just made me smile. I get chills everytime I hear "Like a Diamond". Tom has stayed true to what he believes in and that has only made me even a more loyal fan. This also includes my two teenage daughters who also think you are The Man! Thanks Tom!

    5 out of 5 stars Petty Rocks.......2003-09-17

I've always thought that studio albums don't even compare with live performances. I've also always loved Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. But even I was astounded at how great "The Last DJ" sounds live. From the opening notes of the title track to Mike Campbell's solo on "Lost Children" to the final chords of "Can't Stop The Sun", Tom and the Heartbreakers sound incredible. It's almost like listening to a completely new album. And that's not all. The band goes on to play classics including "Change of Heart" and "I Need To Know", then closes with a ten-minute-long "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and a "You Wreck Me" encore.

Unfortunately, the editing is poor. In some songs the camera changes every three seconds. Some shots don't last for more than half a second. Occasionally the camera will slow down for a minute to watch Tom sing or to pan across the stage, but it doesn't happen often enough. One of the longest shots is of a woman in the audience singing along to two verses of a song. Who knows what's happening on stage. Also, the lighting on some camera shots leaves a lot to be desired. In other places, however, the colors and lighting effects are awesome. Overall, the quality of the music makes the camera problems seem minor.

The extra features are hardly worth mentioning: two TV commercials promoting "The Last DJ" album and some random outtakes of Tom making a video.

As of this time, Amazon hasn't included a track listing, so...
The Last DJ - Money Becomes King - Dreamville - Joe - When A Kid Goes Bad - Like A Diamond - Lost Children - Blue Sunday - You And Me - The Man Who Loves Women - Have Love Will Travel - Can't Stop The Sun - Change Of Heart - I Need To Know - Shake Rattle And Roll - Around And Around - Mary Jane's Last Dance - You Wreck Me

Amazon is also selling the DVD with a bonus CD, which features four songs from the band's appearance on PBS's Soundstage program:
    I'm Crying - Done Somebody Wrong - I Got A Woman - Carol

If you own the Soundstage DVD, it's hardly worth the extra [money].

So, what more do you want? It's Tom Petty live. Buy it.

JT, A little over 3 years & 3,000 tears ago, I mail ordered this dvd, paid
    a little over $25 bucks for it & I A B S O L U T E L Y H A T E D I T !
Luckily, I did not throw it in the lake, but put it high on a shelf so my
children could not reach it until now. Today, ThanksGiving, my teenage
son, Gideon, found it, played it, watched it & loved it! JT, weren't you
the least bit religious? I am not though I have heard it said that a child
(small? young? I can't remember) shall mislead or lead & today I found
that to be true! Watching it with my teenage son, I WAS TRANSFIXED, fixed!
Well, you must know how I felt. I once was blind, but now I see...
I only wish the entire show had been made available & not just the 30 min.
version I got though it's alot to handle & more than enough to love! THANKS
from my heart to yours. "I'm sorry I didn't have much to say..." JT, R.I.P.

2 out of 5 stars Wasted and looking awful, Thunders takes the stage........2005-10-15

Well, as a Johnny Thunders fan, I love this because live JT on video/DVD is a rarity. Unfortunately, JT is completely strung out, LITERALLY performing with his eyes rolled into the back of his head for 3/4 of this half-hour long DVD. This is for Die-Hard fans ONLY.

As another reviewer pointed out, this was obviously a direct video to DVD transfer. No chance that THIS was going to be "remastered!" The sound-mix is AWFUL. For example, during Pipeline the bass track is WAY in front, burying whatever JT was playing! That is his signature tune and we hear the BASS! The editing is crappy, but I have a feeling a good 1/2 hour of footage spared us seeing JT at his rock-bottom worst. As someone who LOVES his music, I don't wanna see that anyways.

JT had to lie down for a good five minutes...at least he continued singing, though. Walter Lure and the rock-steady bass player hold things together as best they can and the drummer does an admirable job (though he apparently never learned to end a song with a flourish...a few songs end with muted tip-taps).

That is my review. If you are reading this you will definitely want it, since the only people who would bother to THINK about purchasing In Cold Blood are Die Hards. You can find this regularly on ePay for less than $10, so happy viewing!

3 out of 5 stars Depends on how you look at it.......2003-02-12

Well it's Johnny Thunders any way you look at it. The DVD production is pretty much the video pressed on a digital format (you didn't honestly think anyone would put any real cash into this, did you?). But it's not awful. It's rare to have any live video footage of this band so I would have to say it's worth buying. It's short, sweet and Thunders close to his worst. It will make you wish he was captured on video on better days.

    1 out of 5 stars warning.......2002-11-25

first of all i consider my self a johnny thunders fan.i have many of his cds and videos/dvds.may he rest in peace.the only reason this dvd should have been released would be to warn people of the danger of using drugs.mr.thunders in his prime was one of the greats!but this concert shows him at one of his lowest points.he can't play guitar.he can't remember the words or sing.he can hardly stand up.unlike on dead or alive it looks like they give it to you like it was, no overdubs.which is what i hated about dead or alive cause there are parts when he is sitting down and isnt even holding the guitar but his parts are still playing.in this video he cant even keep his guitar strapped on but you can hear the slop that is coming out.walter and the rest of the band look like they want to hide.i (think)johnny prided himself on the image..and pulled it off for a long time but in my opinion this is a rip off of his fans..its plain painful to watch..johnny i still luv ya...with that said im putting my copy up for sale..

4 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll Distilled.......2002-04-11

This first aired on the USA network in 1982, as many of you with long since worn tapes can attest. Herein we find Johnny Thunders and Walter Lure again reunited, slapping and slamming and slurring their way through a first-rate set featuring "In Cold Blood," "Pipeline," Alone in a Crowd," and "Born to Lose," among others. Being Johnny, he is not without his troubles: his guitar strap refuses to be stayed, his shirt rips, his sleeve catches in the strings, his boots are falling apart, the song "I Love You" blows up. And yet.... And yet it's a great set, much better than the "Dead or Alive" DVD. This is worth it. The only drawback is the length; thirty minutes is too short--but for the price it's a bargain.

delivers exactly was promised, in terms of comedy, quality acting
from veteran, proven successful actors, that relaxes the audiences,
and leaves them wondering how realistic is the behavior shown on

1 out of 5 stars born to lose? nah, just BORING........2001-08-22

What a massive disappointment. ... I agree with the guy below who says that there's way too little '77 footage or interview stuff ... And you don't even get the performance, it seems! There are plenty of times when Walter Lure strums his guitar and there's no sound emited. And a lot of the footage doesn't quite match up with the music. "Born to Lose", for instance, STARTS with a snippet from the studio cut, then goes into a live reading of it. And most of the time, when there is "live" audio, it's not clear whether it's from the same date the '84 footage was shot -especially since things happen musically that don't go with the visual and vice versa. What a waste. I wish I would've hung on to my money...I could use it whenever the hell the Thunders documentary _Born to Lose_ hits DVD...

    2 out of 5 stars Johnny Thunders-dead or alive?.......2001-08-20

i popped this disc into my dvd player hoping to see an example of rock n roll fury.instead it left me dissappointed and wanting more.most of this disc is concert footage from 1984 in london with little black and white blips of footage from 1977 intertwined throughout.the 1984 footage is high quality but the band is awful and johnny is too strung out to play.very boring.the black and white footage is crappy but is an excellent example of the band's energy and power.it's unfortunate this footage isnt the exclusive subject of the disc. i'd recommend this to thunders completists only.it's worth it for the 77 footage and interviews alone, but it just doesnt do it for me.stick to the bootlegs brothers and sisters.
