Robson Green (Reckless, Touching Evil) stars as Barry, a working-class cop assigned to protect the queen's youngest son (Rupert Penry-Jones, Charlotte Gray, The Four Feathers), a new student at Cambridge. Tara Fitzgerald (Brassed Off!, Frenchman's Creek) is Grace, an American exchange student both men fall for. The classic girlhood fantasy of marrying a handsome prince is given a surprisingly realistic and subtle treatment in The Prince and Me. A pre-med student at the University of Wisconsin named Paige (Julia Stiles, 10 Things I Hate About You, Mona Lisa Smile) collides with a lazy, presumptuous exchange student named Eddie (Luke Mably, 28 Days Later) and, after a prickly beginning, falls in love with him--only to discover that Eddie is Edvard, the Crown Prince of Denmark. The scenario is pure wish-fulfillment, but director Martha Coolidge (Valley Girl, Rambling Rose) not only takes a closer look at what royal life is really like, she also takes the time to turn these fantasy roles into characters that have more than two dimensions. It's still a romantic comedy aimed at teenagers, but within the genre's parameters, the movie has a strong visual style and what might be called depth. --Bret Fetzer

A "magic" story.......2007-06-08
I did not see the movie,my college daughter did. She describes the movie as being "a magic story between two people that come from different societies, and who discover that love has nothing to do with background, but with chemistry, connection between them" She also avows that "It's the best movie, the best cast,is so real and powerful, and sends a great message,_no one should lose his/her self or gave up at his/her dreams, not even for love, because then, no one in the relationship will be happy! The compromises are made only if there is no lost for both parties".
And I am writing this review at her request. What parents do for their children! :)
Fantabulous!.......2007-05-18
Thumbs Up for both movies! I'm a sucker for romantic fairy tales and this two movies tops all. Luke Mably is drop dead gorgeous and he look every inch the prince that he portrays. The chemistry between Paige and Eddy is heartwarming. The sequel would have been nicer if the entire cast from the original show reprise their roles....btw,where has " Eddy" little sister disappear to in the sequel??
whitty characters.......2007-03-07
cute, sweet romance - whitty characters that will make you laugh out loud.
The Prince and Me.......2007-01-03
A very delightful comedy. The type of movie that is enjoyable for the whole family. One that makes you want to get out the pop corn for a good time.
Why was this movie set in Wisconsin? .......2006-12-27
I usually like romantic comedies, but this one was for the birds. Maybe the robin, our state bird here in Wisconsin. Then again, maybe not, since this movie seemed to get ALL the Wisconsin stuff wrong.
People outside on Thanksgiving in just long sleeves? Not where I live. I mean, they could have chosen from about ten other midwestern states if all they wanted was that 'naive farm girl meets big-city boy' feel (which is lame and predictable, by the way).
I like Julia Stiles, and the young man was okay, but getting the local stuff wrong was a turnoff, and it really kind of took me out of the movie.
Tsk tsk.

Product Description
Brand new, factory sealed, fully licensed DVD manufactured in Brazil. NTSC format. Playable on any North American DVD player. High quality full screen black and white image. Original English dialog with optional subtitles in Portuguese. Portuguese subtitles can be easily turned off. The following review appears in Amazon for the VHS edition: "How I love this movie! It's just great. The first in a long line of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy collaberations, it's easily one of the best, and my personal fave. The music is beautiful, the sets and costumes are lush, and the plot is silly fun.
MacDonald is a runaway French princess who is traveling incognito with a shipload of brides bound for N'Orleans. Eddy is the Mercenary Captain who saves her from a band of cutthroat pirates. Songs include "Neath the Southern Moon", "I'm Falling in Love with Someone", "O Sweet Mystery of Life", and "Zing Zing Zing" among others.
There are several great scenes; Eddy marching though the bayous singing "Tramp Tramp Tramp", MacDonald passing off a random drunk as her "uncle" and of course a great sequence where Jeanette unveils her heretofore hidden talent for singing to Eddy.
The sweet, lightheatered spirit of this movie makes it a great introduction to the Eddy/MacDonald cannon for newcomers. If you like this film be sure to also check out "Rosemarie" (generally considered to be their best film) and "New Moon" (containing my favorite movie line of all time: "Do I LOOK like the kind of girl who would marry a moonstruck beachcomber under a coconut tree!?"). "Naughty Marietta" is a happy little movie that is essential for old-movie buffs or anyone who likes a good romance. Highly recommended!
Customer Reviews:
What a joy!.......2007-01-22
Thank you so much to Brazil for making these wonderful movies of Jeanette Macdonald and Nelson Eddy available. I was hesitant to purchase, but am so pleased that I did. The DVD's are playable in South Africa. What a joy to hear those wonderful voices - the soundtracks are good - the pictures are clear. Great viewing for us oldies!
Probably about the best we can hope for in a DVD treatment..........2006-12-13
I'll not review the movie, since that is done elsewhere. The movie is a classic among classics, and by far the best of the EddyMac pairing.
I was a little hesitant to order the DVD considering it's an "Import Edition" and given the relative high price.
First impression - I was so eager to view this that I popped it right into my laptop when I received it. On the laptop DVD player, there were some strange picture artifacts along the bottom of the screen and the sound was half a beat behind the video (even with nothing else running in the background). Uh oh...
Convinced that I'd been ripped off, I put it in my home theater dvd player (Pioneer Elite DV-47ai) expecting more of the same... SURPRISE! No issues at all! Picture is VERY clear (considering the age) and the sound was bright! 1000 times better than my VHS version!! I suspect this is the best treatment of this movie EddyMac fans will ever have, which is sad. But of this version, I have no real complaints. I'd pay twice the price for it! Thanks Brazil!
Excellent Singing in a Nice Story.......2006-10-01
"Naughty Marietta", is a wholesome film, unlike the name may imply. Her naughtiness is running away from an arranged marriage to a villain.
Not a formal stage production, but a story, set in France and the American colonies in the 1700's. Pirates. Pioneers. Romance. Nelson tries so hard to woo Jeanette, a theme in their films.
Great songs and duets. Nelson and Jeanette have a chemistry together. Nelson Eddy, and Jeanette MacDonald are great singers. The sets and costumes take you there. The characters are appealing. The story is interesting, with charm. Some humor. The songs fit smoothly as part of the story. Singing a song, while hiking through the woods, fits the story. Jeanette wears a stunning dress, early in the film, that they don't make anymore, even in the movies; too bad for you fashion people, they didn't have color film. Good acting by Frank Morgan who played the wizard, in the "Wizard of Oz"; and Elsa Lanchester, who played the nanny who quits in "Mary Poppins"; in their much earlier years.
Other excellent, Jeanette MacDonald / Nelson Eddy musicals are, their best, "Maytime", and "Girl of the Golden West", which has Buddy Ebsen, (Jed Clampett) in his 20's; "Rose Marie", in the Canadian Rockies, is pleasant too, but not as exceptional. These movies are hidden gems for those who love a classic movie of romance, story, charm, characters, and exceptional singing.

The Student Prince.......2007-01-10
Another delightful Robson Green film. Great supporting cast. As an American I feel pity for the monarchy but don't misinterpret this. This is a great romp. We had tried to find this but we never could because we knew it as "The King's Bodyguard" but at last we have it and enjoy it each time we need a good laugh.
Student Prince review.......2006-02-26
I got the dvd in a very reasonable time and have watched it several times since. It is a simple story, but it has a feel good ending.
A superbly produced and thoroughly entertaining British drama production.......2005-10-12
Robson Green stars as Barry, a working-class cop assigned to protect the queen's youngest son who is a new student at Cambridge in The Student Prince, a superbly produced and thoroughly entertaining British drama production. The fun begins when cop bodyguard and the prince encounter Grace, an American exchange student for whom they both fall -- hard. When the prince proves as inept at love as he is at learning, the bodyguard finds himself become tutor as well as protector, ghostwriting sweet nothings and academic assignments, all the while repressing his own feelings for Grace. A BBC American and PBS "Masterpiece Theatre" production that would make a splendid and very popular addition to any community library Video/DVD collection, The Student Prince is widescreen, full color, 92-minutes, and enhanced with this DVD format to include a Robson Green biography, a photo gallery, and cast filmographies.
Quite satisfied.......2005-10-05
I received the DVD rather quickly (I live in France) and it was in a very good state. Good transaction !
All over the place.......2005-07-24
For the most part, I enjoyed this production. Robson Green (Barry the police officer) and Rupert Penry-Jones (the prince) play their parts well even though the story is all over the place - borrowing a great deal from Cyrano as well as Educating Rita. My only complaint is with the female lead. I admire Tara Fitzgerald's work very much, but in this role as an American exchange student, she is not very believeable. Some of the reason why is the script (which is a little too corny for words at times), but her accent is all over the place. She is trying hard to sound like the bohemian American she plays (it doesn't play very convincingly), but then constantly slips between an American accent and an English accent, sometimes in the same sentence. The ending is a little silly, but overall, if you are not expecting a life changing experience, The Student Prince is an entertaining way to spend 92 minutes.

Original English dialog with optional subtitles in Portuguese. Portuguese subtitles can be easily turned off. The following review appears in Amazon for the VHS edition:"The story of BROADWAY MELODY OF 1938 is not so much zany as just simply bizarre. Raised on a horse farm where she also somehow learned to sing and dance, Eleanor Powell goes to New York in search of fame and fortune on the Great White Way, where she meets (a) George Murphy and Buddy Ebsen, two horse trainers who are also dancers; (b) Robert Taylor, a producer determined to star her in his new show; and (c) one of the horses from her farm. When the horse comes up lame, Eleanor rescues him--and before too long it becomes necessary for the horse to win the big race in order to finance the show! Eleanor Powell was MGM's great dancing star of the era, George Murphy was one of the screen's most reliable hoofers, and Buddy Ebsen was reknowned as a character actor with an eccentric dance style--all three have tremendous star quality and they generate several charming moments. But today the film is chiefly recalled for two supporting players: Sophie Tucker and Judy Garland. Sophie Tucker had been a great stage star for more than 20 years when this film was made, and MELODY offers one of her rare screen appearances: with her no-nonsense, no-holds-barred style, she leaves little doubt about why she was so celebrated--especially when she launches into her signature song "Some of These Days." Garland, on the other hand, was just really beginning her film career, a slightly chunky teenager with a great big voice--and after putting it through the bullseye with a knockout performance of "Everybody Sing" she nailed the audiences of the day with her famous version of "You Made Me Love You," sung to a photograph of Clark Gable."

It was an okay Movie.......2006-09-12
I recorded it when it came on television. Well I like the insight into JFK Jr.'s personality or their version of it. However, their were scenes where they had these to bimbos and other jerks on the street commenting on his and his wife's life as if they knew him they could have kept that part out.

"For the First Time" is my personal favorite and one of the best Mario Lanza pictures. His voice, magnificent. The movie is a tender love story filled with great music from opera to pop. Why the cd of the soundtrack does not contain the delightful "Cosi" trio is a mystery. Mario's supporting player are all first rate. How Mario must have revelled in playing a difficult opera singer. This film contain some of his best singing. What might we have had if he had only lived, or been better treated by the studio system. An all around treat not to be missed."

The popular romantic comedy Love Hina seemed to end with the Spring Special Movie, when Keitaro and Naru finally got into Tokyo University--and admitted they were in love. In this new three-part adventure, Keitaro breaks his leg at the class welcoming ceremony and has to skip a semester. Keitaro got into the university to keep a childhood promise; now he needs a goal of his own. He decides to assist Mr. Seta and study archeology. While they're away on an expedition, Keitaro's stepsister Kanako arrives and makes life miserable for the whole cast. Keitaro returns and has to deal with Kanako's misplaced affection, Naru's fear of commitment, an abandoned, magical resort, the Hinato residents' well-intentioned meddling, and his own clumsiness. It all adds up to kind of affectionate nuttiness Hina fans expect and enjoy. (Rated 16 and older: comic violence, risqué humor, brief nudity, tobacco and alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

I've heard fans of the anime series Love Hina say this final movie was the worst piece of it. I disagree. For one thing, this is the only time in the series the art looks as good as in the manga. In addition, the storyline is more faithful to this part of the manga storyline then the regular series ever was with its distracting added characters. But my favorite thing about it is that it ends by perfectly recreating my favorite scene in the entire manga series, at the end of Volume 12. Every panel from those last few pages is recreated faithfully here, and I couldn't be happier for that. The series was an OK adaption of a superior manga, but Love Hina Again is far more satisfying in my opinion.
A solid anime adaptation of a great manga.......2006-03-17
Love Hina. An anime based on the manga series by Ken Akamatsu.
INTRODUCTION:
In recent times, I was introduced to the Love Hina manga - and I fell in love with it instantly. Ken Akamatsu's romantic comedy series quickly became one of my favorite mangas. It had all the right elements to keep things interesting - interesting characters that were numerous, cool storylines, a ton of comic relief - pretty much everything I could ever want in a manga series. Naturally, like with most manga series, Love Hina was turned into an anime. And as with any manga/anime conversion, there were some changes. Just the same, though, how did the anime work out? Read on for my review and find out!
OVERVIEW:
Essentially, this is the manga to anime adaptation of Love Hina. The anime version of the series consisted of twenty-five half-hour episodes, as well as several specials that followed.
STORYLINE:
The storyline behind the Love Hina anime is essentially the same as the Anime, despite some differences. It follows the life of Keitaro Urashima, a guy in his late teens/early twenties who is so pathetic, you can't help but feel sorry for him. He's failed the college entrance exams numerous time, and been exiled from his home. Not to mention the fact that he has no talents whatsoever. To study for his next attempt at the exams, he takes shelter at the Hinata House, an old hotel owned by his grandmother. But once he arrives, he gets a rather rough welcome. It has been converted to a girls dormitory - and the residents aren't at all thrilled that he has showed up. Fate takes a rather odd twist, though - his grandmother (who is out wandering the world) makes him manager of the house. But with girls who like him half the time and hate him half the time, he's really no better off than before. The girls include a sweet, smart girl with an occasional mean streak, who Keitaro suspects may be the girl he made a promise with as a child, a shy and often depressed middle school girl with a talent for cooking, a mysterious foreign middle-school aged girl with tons of energy, a man-hating sword master, and a freelance writer who is always either drinking too much or blowing her money betting on horse races. With such diverse personalities and entertaining storylines, it's a series that will keep you coming back and wanting more.
REVIEW (SERIES):
Overall, I am very satisfied with the anime adaptation of Love Hina, but I still feel the manga version is far superior. The manga has scenes the anime doesn't and vice versa, but most of the anime-only scenes/episodes are fillers. As such, people who only watch the anime but don't read the manga are going to miss out on some major storyline elements. Likewise, the anime is less graphic than the manga, probably due to television content restrictions and such. I strongly recommend checking out the Love Hina series, but keep in mind - watching the anime is no substitute for reading the manga in its entirety!
REVIEW (DVD):
There are two different versions of the series that have been released on DVD in the states. One version features discs sold separately for roughly twenty-five dollars, which include four episodes and bonus material. The other versions contain eight episodes per disc, are sold only as a "complete series" set (to my knowledge), and the only bonus features are trailers for other animes. Since it's cheaper, I recommend the latter set. However, it's also tougher to find, so be warned (try eBay.) Both versions feature the uncut subtitled version, the way the series was meant to be enjoyed. The dub cast is hit and miss (why the hell did they give Kitsune a southern belle voice!?), so thank the maker for the original Japanese audio track.
OVERALL:
In the end I am very satisfied with the anime adaptation of this series. No, it doesn't surpass its manga counterpart (animes really do), but it's still a great series. If you want a good anime that will give you romantic elements and comic relief galore, you'll get them both here! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! But don't forget to read the manga too!
EDITION NOTES:
The four-episode DVDs of the series, and the "perfect collection" box remain readily available in most stores with an extensive anime collection. Sadly, these items are a rip-off pricewise (twenty-five bucks for four episodes doesn't satisfy me.) Take my advice - go online and hunt down the cheaper, complete series set.
There's fanservice... but where's the plot?.......2006-02-24
Definately not as good as the original series and only really worthwhile checking out if you are desperate to see some manga-esque lingerie.
funny & typically wacky Love-Hina.......2005-08-14
We've been watching the regular Love-Hina series, but we really loved the movies, especially this one. We love the crazyness, and the funny slapstick humor. Ok, so its not "Miyazaki" level anime, but what is? its just fun and mostly harmless. Plot wasn't bad, but (typically Love-Hina) its not deep either. I'd buy the other movies too. (haven't seen the Summer movie yet, nor the spring one) Just this one and the Xmas one - which was GREAT!!
A great ending to a great series!!.......2005-05-14
Although they changed the style of the characters it didnt really bother me. It starts with Keitaro entering Tokyo U with Naru and Mitsume. Little did Keitaro know that he was gonna break his leg because of Naru. A little after that Keitaro decides to go on a leave of absence with seta to explore the rest of the world in archeology. After about a year has passed his sister Kanako comes into the picture and claims that she is the owner of the Hinata Apartments. She does what ever she can to keep the others out of the annex. I wont exactly tell you the reason because that kinda ruins the ending. Anyways Keitaro comes back after the first episode and brings back gifts. Kanako seems to have a obsession with Keitaro and that just creeped me out. Other than that this movie was a great ending to the Love Hina series. This is a must buy if you have seen the rest of the Love Hina series!!!!
