This 1969 British comedy looks today like a bridge between then-contemporaneous but overlapping styles of comedy, from Terry Southern satire to Goon Show silliness to Monty Python surrealism. Peter Sellers stars as the world's wealthiest man, who sets out with a young ally (Ringo Starr) to demonstrate that people, most especially rich people, will do anything for money. The film is more a series of sketches than an actual story, and some of those get pretty nasty, particularly when a bunch of aristrocrats start feeding from a vat of blood and manure. But in general this is a pretty funny film, and it's great to see a lot of famous and soon-to-be-famous faces on the same screen. Written by Southern, Joseph McGrath (who also directed), Sellers, and Python's John Cleese and Graham Chapman. --Tom Keogh

The Prestige attempts a hat trick by combining a ridiculously good-looking cast, a highly regarded new director, and more than one sleight of hand. Does it pull it off? Sort of. Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman play rival magicians who were once friends before an on-stage tragedy drove a wedge between them. While Bale's Alfred Borden is a more skilled illusionist, Jackman's Rufus Angier is the better showman; much of the film's interesting first half is their attempts to sabotage--and simultaneously, top--each other's tricks. Even with the help of a prop inventor (Michael Caine) and a comely assistant (Scarlett Johansson), Angier can't match Borden's ultimate illusion: The Transporting Man. Angier's obsession with learning Borden's trick leads him to an encounter with an eccentric inventor (David Bowie) in a second half that gets bogged down in plot loops and theatrics. Director Christopher Nolan, reuniting with his Batman Begins star Bale, demonstrates the same dark touch that hued that film, but some plot elements--without giving anything away--seem out of place with the rest of the movie. It's better to sit back and let the sometimes-clunky turns steer themselves than try to draw back the black curtain. That said, The Prestige still manages to entertain long after the magician has left the stage--a feat in itself. --Ellen A. Kim
Description
Award-winning actors Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson star in THE PRESTIGE, the twisting, turning story that, like all great magic tricks, stays with you. Two young, passionate magicians, Robert Angier (Jackman), a charismatic showman, and Alfred Borden (Bale), a gifted illusionist, are friends and partners until one fateful night when their biggest trick goes terribly wrong. Now the bitterest of enemies, they will stop at nothing to learn each other's secrets. As their rivalry escalates into a total obsession full of deceit and sabotage, they risk everything to become the greatest magician of all time. But nothing is as it seems, so watch closely. And be prepared to watch it again and again.

Awesome Movie.......2007-07-03
I thoroughly love watching The Prestige. Once in a while a great movie will come along that I can watch over and over and be entertained continuously. This is one of those films. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale are great as the main characters and the plot is just wonderful. I imagine the book is just as great and I think that the film makers did a really nice job with the material. It's innovative, deceiving, thought provoking and overall excellently put together. Enjoy.
Too much "Gotcha".......2007-06-30
This is a movie about revenge. Robert Angier and Alfred Borden are two magicians who work together. When one of them loses a loved one during a performance, the other pursues a lifetime of vengeance. Back and forth it goes, with the only suspense being who is going to get the last word (or revenge) and destroy the other. This unrelenting process takes up most of the movie and is really overdone in my estimation. The movie is dark, (both the theme and the cinematography) and is pretty despresssing. My husband and I both enjoyed "The Illusionsist" much more that this movie.
Are You Watching Closely?.......2007-06-29
Wow! A review of this movie! That's not an easy thing. And the confused beginning and drawn out silences make it difficult to separate past from present from future and determine where you are in the story. But, after Christian Bale is responsible for the death of Hugh Jackman's wife, Piper Perado, the hatred between Jackman and Bale ratchets upward to obsession, with each magician exposing the tricks of the other. Both have found the ultimate trick, the transported man, involving exact doubles. It isn't clear how Bale found his duplicate, nor is it obvious until afterwards that his own personal tragedy, the suicide of his wife, Rebecca Hall, is the result of his double. But the extent of Jackman's obsession is shown by his rejection of his beautiful assistant, Scarlett Johansson, and his funding the research of Nicoli Tesla, a very real and very eccentric scientist of the period played by a stoic David Bowie. And when Jackman uses a duplicate to lure Bale into being accused of murder, and obtains custody of Bale's daughter...well, I've already said too much and the final plot twist should be left as a surprise.
My favorite Magic-themed movie.......2007-06-27
I saw this in the theatre, and found myself discussing it with my fellow movie goers all the way home (30 minutes). The next day I still was figuring out, in my own head, how the pieces all fit together in this movie. Christopher Nolan has directed my two favorite movies, Memento and The Prestige.
Sadly, when I received this on DVD, I was eager to watch it again. But this time through, I found myself asking why I didn't catch all the clues pointing to the end when I watched it the first time. The reason? Mr. Nolan knows how to give you all of the info without giving you the key to figuring it out.
If you like magic, "thinking movies", movies with a twist, and paradoxes, you will love this movie.
Even David Bowie was great as the part of Nicole Tesla.
Double Trouble.......2007-06-26
I don't know why my expectations for The Prestige were set for an average movie. Must've been something that I read. In contradiction to whatever it was that set my expectations low, I will set yours relatively high.
Oh...wait....That's exactly how I started my review for The Illusionist The Illusionist (Widescreen Edition) earlier this year. But the intro does indeed work with The Prestige too.
My low expectations were because The Prestige and The Illusionist were released right around the same time, and I therefore at the time had a case of Magician-Movie-Overload. Regardless, I'm glad I opted to spend the time with both, because both were thoroughly entertaining from start to finish.
A lot of the tricks in The Illusionist are movie magic...in fact most are movie magic and could only be done as so. But the tricks in The Prestige are much more feasibly tricks that could actually be pulled of by a turn of the century magician (with the exception of the machine that was being built by The Prestige's mad scientist David Bowie).
Don't expect to go into The Prestige and be truly amazed by wizardry. The Prestige is more the story of rival magicians (Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale), and which one can deliver the ultimate trick before the rival interferes. But--make no mistake--the tricks are a very fun part of the movie, as are the diabolical ways in which each rival gets in the way of the other.
Christopher Nolan directs. The Prestige is not quite the action-packed, super-hero adventure that Nolan's last outing was ( Batman Begins (Two-Disc Special Edition) ), but The Prestige delivers its monies worth.
My recommendation is to see for yourself.

Definate keeper.......2007-06-27
As others have said if you like Christopher Nolan's other films you should enjoy this one. I really liked David Bowie's potrayal of Nikolai Tesla.
Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman and Michael Caine are all great in this story of passion, jealousy and deception. Christopher Nolan is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors.
As far as the "forced ads" goes you can't jump to the menu but you can track forward through everything but the FBI warning, its annoying but not as unbearable as the other reveiwer made it out to be. I too wish they would stop this nonsense. I'm all for the previews on the disc just give me the choice of watching them.
Amazing movie, incredible disc........2007-06-19
Batman Begins director Christopher Nolan proves his skill as a director yet again in this thriller full of grudges, backstabbing, and magic. I don't want to spoil anything, but I'll just say this: this is a movie where about half-way through, you realize the story might go anywhere! It's got an amazingly twisty plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the actors all deliver amazing performances. With magicians like David Blane and Criss Angel making waves on television, I think now was as good a time as ever to release this kind of movie. This is such a good thriller, it almost makes up for how disappointing M. Night Shymilan's "Lady in the Water" was, because it more than fills the gap.
The Blu-Ray itself is a true visual feast as well. It's got amazing black levels and color contrast that images seemed to pop off the screen, even on my crappy old 1080i-only set through component cables. This is definitely a great movie to play when you want to show off your Blu-Ray player or new TV!
3 acts: HD picture, HD audio, HD quatlity! .......2007-06-17
Great film, you will not be upset with this purchase. Oh did I mention that the picture is top notch, not to mention the audio and bonus material, don't wait order it!
Do NOT BY THE BLU-RAY version of this film.......2007-05-17
The movie itself is great and you should definately watch it.
What you should NOT do is buy this Blu-Ray disc which has approximate 10 minutes of UNSKIPPABLE trailers and then to add injury to insult, after you, a paying customer has bought the disc and shown you are one of the good guys they make you watch a UNSKIPPABLE "don't pirate movies" propaganda piece effectively calling you a criminal!!!
Pop the disc in and you will not be able to watch the movie for at least 10 minutes. Everyone who bought this disc should return it until the studios get the message.
A good magic title movie for BluRay - BUY IT........2007-05-07
A good movie for bluray, you have to see it, BUY IT NOW HURRY UP.

ringo.......2007-05-12
strange movie, very dated.
it was better when i was 13. (in the 70's).
Magic Christian.......2007-04-07
This is dark comedy with surprisingly famous actors making cameos thruout the movie. It should be by todays standards listed as 'R' rated for BN/AC/AL but very brief. The overall story line is slow but almost believable. It reflects the 60's with it's theme & music. It was a almost a Beatles style cult film. Everytime I hear "If you want it here it is, come and get it" I think of this film when I saw it in the theatre in 1970. It was fun to go back! Carl age 52
Mocking Greed and Arrogance.......2007-02-18
I don't put much significance on the social commentary of movies, but I enjoy this picture's insulting of human greed and pride. And, it is hilarious while doing it. It doesn't even take itself seriously. I think it is very funny while targeting some of Humanity's worst characteristics.
From Different Eyes........2007-02-11
I saw this movie in the late '60's when it was made. I liked it then. I had not seen it since, but have been contemplating attitudes toward money lately and remembered the movie. It is interesting how 36 years (or so) can change one's perspective. Although the movie did not change (obviously), my attitude toward money has changed. I still have a certain amount of disrespect for money and for selling the days of my life for money. I still believe that people are much more greedy than they need to be. All of these things stayed the same, both in the movie (of course) and in my mind. I now have enough money to meet my basic needs and even a few "wants" that are not needs. When I first saw the movie, I was on the outside, not always knowing if I would have enough to secure basic needs. Either way, this movie is a biting satire and can allow one to step far enough from the current attitudes toward money that one might have and start to explore them from a different perspective.
Even if the viewer does not want to have that deep of an experience while watching a movie, it is interesting to see how many well known people, both living and (now) dead are in one movie; sometimes just walking through in the background, sometimes with important parts.
This movie is part of the culture and should not be missed.
Trippy hippie movie!.......2007-02-07
This is an old favorite of my husband's, so we knew what we were getting into- it was wonderful to find this on DVD (for a very long time, it was VHS only). A fun look into the past!

Customer Reviews:
The Met misses with this production of the famous Mozart opera.......2007-06-14
This is a barely adequate production of the great Mozart Opera.
The spare stage settings create little of the "Singspiel" magic that this opera requires.
Franciso Araiza is uninspiring as Tamino but other members of the cast are generally good - Kathleen Battle is appropriately girlish as Pamina, Kurt Moll provides some gravitas as Sarastro, and Manfred Hemm provides some energy and humour as Papageno.
This production never springs to life and after a while one just sits there feeling bored.
Sound and picture quality are OK.
Die Zauberflote.......2007-03-29
I was pleased with the musical performance, though mainly because this opera is one of my favorites. The sets were not all I thought they could be. I was disappointed that I could not find a way to find where I had left off in the playing if I needed to interrupt it for any length of time.
A wonderful production.......2007-03-17
I really thought I was buying the 2007 (I believe) production by the Met. The 2007 production is much more a high tech, mystical presentation, but much shortened. You, or at least I couldn't discover the production year in the flyer, but it doesn't matter. The DVD is certainly worth the money. I now know that the 2007 production is not yet available on DVD.
Brilliant.......2006-11-23
Everything about this performance is simply brilliant. In general, nothing beats live music performances. Having seen the opera live a few weeks ago, I can safely say this is at least as good as the live performance.
Perhaps the greatest performers were the Queen of the Night, Tamino and the orchestra itself. This DVD is truely a gem, and a joy to watch. Highly recomended.
Excellent!.......2006-10-12
I was a little wary of buying this DVD from the negative reviews for it, but after seeing it, I have no idea where those comments were founded. I got this just so that I could see the actual performances after listening to the opera, and I was not dissapointed! This is an exceptional production of the Magic Flute, and well worth it. The orchestra is very good. Here's a character-by-character analysis:
Sarastro is top rate; those low notes he is able to hit is unbelieveable! Kurt Moll is famous for this role as well. I especially like his aria and chorus of 'O Isis und Osiris'.
Pamina is really excellent as well. That Kathleen Battle sure has a great set of pipes! For me, the best part for her was in chapter 35: the sorrowful aria, 'Ach, ich fuhl's, es ist verschwunden' -It gives you chills.
Tamino is great, and I like the sound of his voice.
Papageno is marvelous! He was my favorite even when I just listened to a recording of the opera. He's got a great voice, and very funny. My favorite part is when he plays the magic chimes when he and Pamina are caught by the slaves. It's just fabulous! I also love the last piece where he finally gets his little Papagena.
The Queen of the Night is extremely good! Someone else had said she was awful and slowed down the triples in her one famous aria, 'Der Holle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen', but I thought she was exceptional. It's one of my favorites. I have a lot of them, as you can tell. She's not screechy or anything, and it's just great.
Overall I think this is a grand DVD, and I'm very happy I found it. I would highly recommend it to anybody just wanting to see a great production of Mozart's timeless opera; like I was.

Description
Awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929, Thomas Mann was honored for a body of work that began with his first novel, Buddenbrooks, and whose other milestones included The Magic Mountain and Doktor Faustus . These three novels are brought to life in this outstanding 7-disc collection, which pays tribute to Mann's most celebrated and famous works.
Buddenbrooks As seen on PBS Great Performances . A stimulating adaptation of Mann's most famous novel and one of the most widely read German novels in the world, Buddenbrooks is the sweeping tale of the rise and fall of a wealthy merchant family torn between family loyalty and personal freedom.
Doktor Faustus Driven by a single-minded search for a totally new musical idiom, composer Adrian Leverkühn, makes a pact with the devil with a very high price: the total renunciation of love and the gradual deterioration of the mind and body.
The Magic Mountain Hans Castorp, son of a distinguished Hamburg family, spends seven years in a Swiss sanatorium. Drawn to the hermetic society, he receives an erotic and philosophical initiation but abruptly leaves at the launch of the Great War to learn true life experience and responsibility.
Customer Reviews:
The only DVD release that contains the complete Magic Mountain (Zauberberg) mini-series!.......2007-06-29
This review is mainly about The Magic Mountain mini-series (2 DVDs) starring Christoph Eichhorn as Hans Castorp, Marie-France Pisier, Rod Steiger, etc. It's ironic that the complete series was finally released on a Region 1 DVD in North-America. This is the only way (apart from occasional rebroadcasts on German tv stations) where you can watch the entire mini-series in three parts as originally intended. There exists a Region 2 German release which contains a drastically edited film version of just 146 minutes as opposed to the more than 5 hour duration of the 3 parts originally. You can imagine how much had to be cut away and how it didn't do justice to the novel or the original film adaptation. The only positive thing about the Region 2 release is a bonus documentary.
Back to this Region 1 release, I only watched The Magic Mountain in its entirety and the picture quality is excellent, the English subtitles are there (optional), and the packaging is done nicely (separate for all three films). I wouldn't have picked those menu stills that the studio did (not sure if they read the novel before) but it's the content that matters.
I have yet to watch the Buddenbrooks (11 part mini-series) and Doktor Faustus. This DVD is highly recommended to students of German Studies and is an excellent addition to any library collection.
Terrific Collection of Classic works.......2007-05-02
For any German student or just Mann interested person this is a great DVD collection to own.

In this last go-round for the Sinbad series, Patrick Wayne plays the legendary sailor. He is betrothed to Farah (Jayne Seymour) and seeks her hand in marriage, but her brother Kassim has been turned into a baboon by the evil Zenobia (Margaret Whiting). Before he can break Zenobia's spell, Sinbad must contend with the Minoton, a bronze statue brought back to life to do her bidding; a trio of flaming skeletons wielding swords; a 9-foot-tall troglodyte; and a saber-toothed tiger. Wayne is the film's weakest point, making a rather wooden Sinbad. Whiting's performance smells strongly of ham, but it's a brand of ham that fits the movie perfectly. As always, though, Harryhausen's work is outstanding. He instills more personality and character into his creatures in this outing, especially for Kassim and his relationship to his sister. The prolonged battle between the troglodyte and saber-toothed tiger is a violent one, generating some real suspense. At times it's difficult to remember that it's not live action with guidance from a director. Though this is an uneven effort for the Sinbad series, it still has its moments. --Jerry Renshaw

Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger.......2007-05-10
Well I have to say I always have enjoyed this movie, it was actually the first Sinbad movie I have ever witness and I was pretty much in awe of it as a kid, watching it on DVD on the widescreen still takes me back to those days, even though it wasn't done with ILM effect standards for me its more about the suspension of belief and going back it a more innocent and certainly less technical time. To redo a Harryhausen movie would be like colorizing black and white classics.
Totally enjoyable SInbad film.......2006-12-02
I really liked this film, I dont see why some dont, it has great stop animation and Patrick Watne was not that bad as Sinbad. This movie still excels in being a great fantasy film. It was a shame this would be the last SInbad film to be released(LIVE ACTION I MEAN). Maybe one day someone will get smart in Hollywood and realize SInabad is a great cvhracter and needs some treatment.
a fond and fun look back for the 35 and older crowd.......2006-06-12
i can still remember getting to go to see this one alone as my parents went to another movie, man was that a big deal to me!
this time out sinbad wants to marry, but his true loves brother is turned into a monkey(hard to a monkey for a womans hand), so off we go to find the cure, with the witch that turned him chaseing after them.
the ray harryhausen f/x's are most of the show and they are great!! sure cgi's look better but this was before we had that and the adventure is first rate. there are a few things that maybe to much for the young(including a nude from the back shot of two women) but otherwise this is great family fun!!
The Sinbad Series Went Past Its Prime.......2006-05-31
I am a big fan of Ray Harryhausen, the man who created the marvelous special effects for movies such as "It Came from Beneath the Sea" and "20 Million Miles to Earth." I have enjoyed nearly every movie for which Ray Harryhausen has created special effects and the special effects in all them. Unfortunately this movie, one of the last movies with Harryhausen special effects, is also one of the weakest movies for which Harryhausen has done special effects.
Sinbad (Patrick Wayne, a veteran of dozens of television appearances) is a questing man, and this time he meets hot babe Princess Farah (played by a young and gorgeous Jane Seymour) and her baboon brother Prince Kassim (played sometimes by a stop-action baboon and the rest of the time by Damien Thomas). Of course, Prince Kassim is not supposed to be a baboon, but the only way to get him back to human form is to find Melanthius (played by Dr. Who veteran Patrick Troughton). Melanthius determines that the only way to change Prince Kassim back is to head off to the arctic to some mysterious power, taking beautiful blonde daughter Dione (Taryn Power) with him.
Of course, quests like these are no fun unless there is someone chasing after you. In this case the person is Zenobia (Margaret Whiting), who wants her son Rafi (Kurt Christian) to become the king. Zenobia has power of her own, which we figure out quickly when we learn that she is the one who turned Prince Kassim into a baboon. Zenobia decides to make Sinbad's trip more interesting by animating a Minoton, which looks a lot like a robot Minotaur.
Sinbad and gang head off to the frigid north, encountering a giant wasp, a really giant walrus, a one-horned giant troglodyte, assorted ghouls, and (what was missing from the list?) a saber-toothed tiger! It's a tough journey, especially with Princess Farah and Dione exposing all sorts of flesh as they go skinny-dipping, but Sinbad will overcome all obstacles to save Prince Kassim!
The problem with this movie is that the acting is not all that great, and the plot seems too much like a re-tread of the previous two Sinbad movies. I enjoy the special effects, but I also knew too far in advance when things were going to happen. Admittedly, that knowledge comes after having watched every Ray Harryhausen movie in existence, but even a viewer who has watched the previous two Sinbad movies will find this one predictable.
As with the two previous movies, this DVD contains extras. "This Is Dynamation" and "The Ray Harryhausen Chronicles" were included in "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad." Both features are great for fans of Harryhausen. There are some additional goodies, such as trailers, production notes and talent files.
There is a lot to recommend in this movie. Harryhausen's stop-action work is always remarkable and always a treat. Jane Seymour and Taryn Power are lovely eye candy. For the women there is hunky Patrick Wayne, the second son of Hollywood macho man John Wayne. If you have the previous two Sinbad movies, "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad" and "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad," then you have to have this movie to complete the set. Good luck!
Margaret Whiting.......2006-02-01
I feel she completely steals the show from beginning to end, even paired with the son of John Wayne and the daughter of Tyrone Power. I love the sequence when Zenobia turns herself into a bird, then into miniature human form, and then..(Just enjoy the dramatic ending)

Customer Reviews:
My mistake.......2007-01-04
It was not what i thought it would be. I was looking for something from "Classical Kids". That is my mistake.
Not worth your money!!.......2006-04-04
I found this version at the library and decided to check it out. I was amazed at how bad it was. For one thing, they changed the story around which was bothersome. The singing is really bad, and I think the thing that that bothered me the most is the strange costumes (Tamino looks like an elf!) I also hated all the strange creatures that come out, instead of animals coming out when Tamino plays his flute, they have people prancing out on stage dressed as who knows what. The whole thing was just horrible, costumes, the set, everything...and a lot of times when the commentator is explaining a certain part, it'll be playing a whole different aria (or the wrong part of the aria.) The whole thing is so chopped up, and the DVD is more blurry and grainy than I've ever seen anything on DVD before. I wouldn't buy it or even waste yout time getting it from the library. You're better off buying a REAL production on DVD of the Magic Flute for your kids, such as the one at the Met with Kathleen Battle.
Not really for kids.......2006-02-24
This product advertises that it is for children, but the commentator talks through most of the excerpts, and my children (3 different classes) found it boring.
Don't waste your money.......2005-08-06
I was terribly disappointed with this DVD. The singing and staging is barely adequate, the picture, sound quality, and sound direction are all second rate. Some of the arias were cut off prematurely and the transitions into the next scene were poorly done. If your intention is to introduce young people to the story, buy one of the highly recommended DVD's and do your own commentary.
Where did the Great Scenes go?.......2001-07-06
This video is really disappointing to me. I know a lot about Mozart, and Die Zauberflote in general. IF someone HAD to make an abridged version of Die Zauberflote (don't ask me why!) they could have done a better job than this. Most of the great scenes are cut out, and the story is changed a bit! Cutting out two thirds of the opening scene ("Zu Hilfe! Zu Hilfe!") is a terrible idea, cutting out half of, "Der Holle Rache" is even WORSE, destroying the part where the Queen, Monastatos, and the Three Ladies are destroyed just as bad- Note: Cutting out the finale causes something like this to happen: "The Queen told Pamina to kill Sarastro. Sarastro says, 'That's okay,' Papageno finds a mate, and they live happily ever after." What happened to the Queen? Ugh! Also, the sound quality is terrible. The costumes are ugly, and the staging, with staircases leading nowherte on either side of the stage, just doesen't work. Put it all together and it spells disaster.
