Christina Ricci invigorates an even-more-neurotic-than-usual variation on the classic neurotic woman in this Woody Allen movie. Comedy writer Jerry Falk (Jason Biggs, American Pie) is madly in love with Amanda (Ricci, The Opposite of Sex), even though they haven't had sex in six months. Falk meets an older writer named Dobel (Allen) who becomes a sort of accidental mentor, encouraging him to break free of Amanda and his clinging agent (Danny DeVito). The pace is sluggish, almost every scene feels like an outtake from an earlier, better Woody Allen movie (particularly Annie Hall), Biggs never seems comfortable with his dialogue--only Ricci makes her character her own, giving her own perverse comic spin to the proceedings. About three-fourths of the way through the movie, the story starts to feel fresher and more compelling, but by then it's too late. Also featuring Jimmy Fallon and Stockard Channing. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars Woody Lite.......2007-07-04

I'm a big Woody Allen fan. Other than "What's New Pussycat" I had enjoyed everyone of his movies that I've seen. I'll now add one more to the mediocre list; "Anything Else". Unfortunately, "Anything Else" was the last of the four movies that I watched and it was spoiling my impression of the set. I took time out to reflect on the unique Woody Allen style that is strongly present in the other three movies and reassessed my rating of this set.

All four movies are what I would call light entertainment. These are movies that you can relax and enjoy. The humor is good but not overwhelming like is is in "Bananas" or "Love and Death". What appealled to me in the three good movies in this set was the way Woody Allen constructed such oddball plots and twists within those plots. These wacky roads end up leading us to a lot of amusing relationships. These are all romantic comedies the most of which have the leading man (Woody Allen) fall for the leading lady. In some, the relationship is a reunion, in another, it is making opposites attrack. In "Anything Else" it's, well, a sort of agonizing patience.

I missed these movies when the originally came out. Part of that is due to the fact that Woody Allen movies usually don't make it to our local theaters. That's too bad because Allen can do more with less than any director I know.

4 out of 5 stars Not Apocalyptic but Adequate!.......2007-03-11

Let me preface this by saying my "collecting" habits revolve around movies, etc. filmed in NYC. I wasn't always a huge Woody Allen fan, but have grown to appreciate his humor over the years.
These are all decent Woody Allen movies.
Some of the acting in the lesser of this group, seems forced. Usually Woody's humor slips under the radar, and forces one to think for a second or two. In some of these, the jokes seem telegraphed between the parties. Especially in the first few minutes of each film. My personal test is if I ever use a Woody Allen one liner from one of his films, that film gets a passing grade in my book. The title of my review might be found in one these four.

I'm ranking these within the set from Best to Worst. (within this set)

Small Time Crooks
The best of the lot, with the best simpleton plot. Strong supporting cast in Tracey Ulman, and Hugh Grant.
If you are simply looking for quality over quantity, simply buy this title on its own, and call it a day. It's a rags to riches and back to rags again story. Some very funny moments packed into this one.

Anything Else
This is another good NYC movie. Some awesome scenes filmed in wide sweeping shots, and some great streets scenes. Christina Ricci is really something to look at it this film, too. She is believable in the "struggling / tortured actress" role. Woody plays a mentor role to the love sick male co-star (Jason Biggs), however, Mr. Biggs is not a good fit for this movie. The film gives a nice "sunny Sunday afternoon, in NYC feeling", along with a few laughs.

Curse of the Jade Scorpion
This is one of Woody's "flash back" to the 30's pictures. Good upbeat jazz soundtrack. Fun story line, but a little corny and forced. This movie almost lost me in the first 10 minutes of joke dialog, but stick with it. (If you're looking for something from the 30's era, skip this, and go to "Sweet & Lowdown")

Hollywood Ending
Good NYC scenery and some good cinematography, but WAY TOO LONG. My wife and I gave up on this before we could see the "Hollywood Ending", so that's all I'll say about it.

Overall, I give the set a B- rating, as a set. However, the price per film is excellent, if you are collector, or like to have an occasional Woody film to queue up, on a Sunday afternoon. You might have a hard time finding one or two of these movies at a standard circuit city or Best Buy store, so it's worth it to grab them at an average of $6 per movie. If you don't like Woody's style, you probably won't like most of these, and you might be better off reviewing them on a title by title basis.

4 out of 5 stars Not all great films, but collectable.......2007-01-15

I admit I'll buy anything with Woody's name on it. Some of these are not great movies, as it seems he'd been trying to set a Guiness record for volume of work, but as a collector I had to have them, and this is a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars Madagascar: the twist and turn word!.......2006-04-23

This is very funny film immersed in the great tradition of Woody Allen. A hypnotist (Voltan Polgar)will make a true mess of entangles I this fantastic comedy of mistakes that included the prestigious presence of this talented and beautiful actress. Helen Hunt. A delightful movie that finds an inspired script, a towering cast and obviously, the acid occurrences of this remarkable and irreverent filmmaker.

4 out of 5 stars Everything new is old again..........2004-08-04

Woody Allen is one of the greatest comedic voices of our time. Be it as a stand-up, a writer or a director of countless films, Allen is not only unquestionably funny, but clever as well. The four films in this box - Anything Else; The Curse Of The Jade Scorpion; Hollywood Ending; and Small Time Crooks represent the most recent period of his film history, under the Dreamworks banner.

Many say Woody has lost his magic, and to some extent they may be right. I'm not sure whether audiences have seen this "talky" humour to death now (the modern sitcom was born out of pictures like 'Annie Hall', in my opinion), or there is a distaste towards Allen because of his private life or much-imitated performances, but these four movies are largely overlooked gems.

First up, two of these pictures are not Woody standards. 'Small Time Crooks' and 'Curse of the Jade Scorpion' are caper and detective stories respectively, and as full of Woody-isms as they are, it works beautifully. The last two movies are more Woody standards - lots of talking, lots of film references and a lot of humour. 'Anything Else' has been the subject of most of the criticism of Woody's recent work, but it is hard to see why. 'Anything Else' is like a cross between 'Annie Hall' and 'Stardust Memories', although not quite as good as either. For detractors of Woody, he is not in it nearly as much as his on-screen protégée (Jason Biggs). I really couldn't see that much wrong with it (although as one critic said, you know Allen has lost touch with the youth of New York when his characters go to a Diana Krall concert and enjoy it). The script is still sharp too. Christina Ricci's character at one point warns Biggs not to kill himself because it is "so middle class".

So don't let the critics fool you - these films are the work of a man who has certainly earned, and continues to earn, his place in the pantheon of great directors. And you can't pass up four Woody Allen films for under $25.

4 out of 5 stars ANOTHER ONE.......2007-03-04

I've seen the whole Woody Allen production and, frankly, I'm unable to say that, since MANHATTAN in 1979, one of his movies is a failure. Everyone of them is extremely well written, intense, and I've never looked at my watch while I was watching them. It's incontestable that Woody Allen can't be compared to Steven Spielberg nor Brian De Palma with relation to the mise-en-scene of a movie but, in my opinion, he still belongs to the best American directors of the last thirty years.

ANYTHING ELSE is a sweet comedy about a sweet guy who doesn't know how to say no to his relations for fear of hurting them. His psychiatrist won't be of any help at all. Only an old Jewish philosopher, with odd and radical methods, will manage to transform the young man. The dialogues are smart, the actors perfect and the action very funny. In short, ANYTHING ELSE is another little pearl of the aging master.

A DVD zone quality.

2 out of 5 stars Would Have Been Preferable.......2006-10-22

Like The Rolling Stones, interminably imitating themselves, Woody Allen has been recycling schtick for so long viewers feel they've seen his movies twice before he makes them. On one hand, there's no harm in this, it's comforting to watch the old, neurotic vaudevillian wind up the Victrola yet again. On the other hand, when you go to the Xerox machine and make a copy of a copy of a copy, the end result may be unintelligible.

Ostensibly a film about change, Anything Else is actually a study in stasis. There's plenty of snappy patter, a few zingers, and enough Dostoevsky references to satisfy intellectual elitists, but ultimately - this dog don't hunt. As writer and director, the blame belongs to Allen, and the lion's share of it goes to the character of Jerry Falk, Jason Biggs, which Allen himself would have played twenty years ago.

Jason Biggs, looking like he was carved out of balsa wood, tries unsuccessfully to pass off smiling for acting. As Falk he is dumb, bland, identity-less, ridiculously forgiving, and funny not. Jerry is devoid of the comedy writer's requisite elements: anger, fiery wit, irreverence, pain, deep sorrow, and profound hunger for approval. In Dobel, Allen, we see these qualities mellowed into delusional, paranoid alta-cocker-itude, and Dobel gets off some characteristically funny/gloomy lines. Unfortunately, they exist in a vacuum.

Christina Ricci, as Amanda, is well cast and delivers, but her character is so two-dimensional, if it turned sideways it would disappear. The moment she meets Jerry it's obvious she's trouble, as the film ends she is simply starting her familiar pattern anew.

Stockard Channing brings energy and credible craziness to every scene she's in, while Danny DeVito is so good he almost saves the picture. (Aficionados may want to compare the DeVito character, a loser talent agent with one, horrible client - to Broadway Danny Rose, a loser talent agent specializing in acts nobody else would have. The difference, of course, is that BDR is a gem, one of Allen's very best.)

For an Allen movie worth owning, try Radio Days.

1 out of 5 stars Congratulations.......2006-07-09

Congratulations to Anything Else. This movie wins the booby prize as the absolute worst movie Woody Allen has ever directed. Here is your crown of poison ivy. May it itch like mad. Jason Biggs is a terrible actor. Of all the genuinely talented and successful young comedians and actors availiable, I refuse to believe Biggs is the best Allen could do. Purhaps he chose Biggs because he figured an incompetent actor would look even more pathetic and thus sympathetic to the audience. The considerable talents of Christina Ricci and Stockard Channing are completely wasted on two characters who are stupid, selfish, hateful freaks. I suppose its a compliment to say their characters are thoroughly loathesome. Rarely has Allen been this blank-facedly misogynist. Danny DeVito is just wasted and embarrassed in a poorly drawn throwaway role as a horrible and pathetically insecure has-been-never-was talent scout. Biggs plays a basically nice guy who becomes attached to people who use him and treat him like junk & he is incapable of letting people go no matter how awful they are to him. Finally, his mentor, played by Allen, of course, talks him into moving away and leaving all these jerks behind. Why? So he can live somewhere else and start the cycle all over again? Without effective psychoanalytical help, he'll still be the same schmuck in California he was in NY but he'll at least be a well-tanned schmuck. Pointless, defeatist and hateful.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-06-06

Contrary to the idiots who apparently saw what they were looking for instead of what was on the screen, the young hero in this movie was NOT trying to imitate Woody Allen. And I'm sick of all these so-called critics who complain about every Woody Allen movie, "They all sounded like Woody Allen." a) They don't. And b) if they did, what could you expect, he's only got one brain, there's bound to be some similarity. Would you make that complaint about Noel Coward? Oscar Wilde? George Kaufman and Moss Hart? Neil Simon? Probably. Do you think anyone with any sense would care about it? My only objection to Woody Allen is that he splits infinitives and misuses the word "nauseous." I think he just likes the sound of it. This movie is a riot. And interesting. Perfectly structured, well and evenly written, acted to a fare thee well by everyone in it (I'm partial to Stockard Channing, myself, I love her, and she does a smash-up job in this flick), and full of funny lines and incidents. I highly recommend it. Also, this movie has the "distinction" of having one of my two favorite scenes from movies in it. One of them is when Meg Ryan fakes an orgasm in "When Harry Met Sally." The other comes about 10 minutes before the end of this flick and is Woody Allen's response to the two bullys. I won't give it away, you'll recognize it. I thought this was a good movie, not just a good Woody Allen movie. This is the 2nd time I've seen it, and I found it a million times funnier this time than I did the 1st. I don't know why. It is very funny.

2 out of 5 stars Deconstructing Annie Hall -- One of Woody Allen's Least Memorable Films .......2006-03-06

`Anything Else' reminds me of Woody Allen's earlier masterpiece `Annie Hall' in more than one way - a love romance in New York City, an aspiring comic writer, funny one-liners, jazz songs, and most of all, the choice of the hero/heroine who might or might not leave the city. The difference is that `Anything Else' doesn't achieve the level of humor and pathos of `Annie Hall.' Perhaps the film's soulless touch might reflect Allen's own feelings about the city and filmmaking itself these days, and also explain this strangely weariness of the film that is very disappointing.

Jason Biggs plays Allen's alter ego, young comedy writer Jerry who really wants to write a serious novel. He struggles to make his dream come true for all this incompetent agent Harvey (Danny DeVito) and his frigid girlfriend Amanda (Christina Ricci) who refuses to sleep with him (for six months). Perhaps some viewers would find these characters unlikely or worse, unlikable - and Jerry and Amanda are all living in a nice, clean room together in New York City, and afford to hear Diane Krall singing and stay in a hotel (single room, $200) - well while we are watching these annoying and implausible characters, another irritating person arrives. It is Amanda's mom Paula (Stockard Channing), who 'tries' something new (here white powder) ... like in 'Annie Hall.'

This formula of vintage Woody Allen comedy with eccentric characters might have worked in the 70s and 80s. Actually, there are some funny jokes from Allen himself, playing Jerry's mentor David Dobel, but the film itself, especially the first part, is slow and boring. Fast and snappy dialogues are not to be found, and the character of Ricci, who fails to show the charm of a real coquette, is only irritating.

Actually, the casting itself is the real problem. Jason Biggs is not convincing as struggling Jewish writer, and neither is Ricci as whimsical heroine. I know it is too much to expect from them the chemistry between Allen and Diane Keaton, and what is more embarrassing is that Ricci is seen prowling in her underwear, as if compensate the lack of that credibility of romance.

`Anything Else' is definitely not meant for those who are going to watch Woody Allen films for the first time - in that case, he or she would never come back again -- nor for his devoted fans, who prefer his films with romance, humor, wit, and insightful observation about life. It took nearly three years for the film to be released in Japan where I watched it, and now I know the reason for the delayed release.

    Product Description

To the horror of prudes everywhere, American Pie 2 is even funnier than its popular predecessor, pushing the R rating with such unabashed ribaldry that you'll either be appalled or surprised by its defiant celebration of the young-adult male libido. Females will be equally shocked or delighted, because like American Pie this appealing, character-based comedy puts the women in control while offering a front-row view of horny guys in all their dubious glory. Which is to say, American Pie is mostly about sex--or, to be more specific, breasts, genitalia, "potential" lesbianism, blue silicone sex toys, crude methods of seduction, "the rule of three" (just watch the movie), a shower of "champagne," phone sex, tantric sex, and, oh yeah... superglue. In the case of college freshman Jim (Jason Biggs), performance anxiety plagues his upcoming reunion with sexy Czech exchange student Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth), but his buddies from American Pie have a solution: rent a Lake Michigan beach house for the summer, throw wild parties to lure the local "hotties," and score big-time. Beach Party this ain't: blessed with a complete cast reunion from AP1 (including Eugene Levy as Jim's dad), this sequel is anything but innocent, and with the exception of drugs (which are conspicuously absent), pretty much anything goes. The gags are almost nonstop, and director J.B. Rogers (recovering from his debut debacle Say It Isn't So) handles them with laudable precision, allowing his young cast (particularly Biggs, who epitomizes comedic good sportsmanship) to run with lines that most people wouldn't dare utter aloud. The result is a liberating and eminently good-natured comedy that needn't apologize for its one-track mind

5 out of 5 stars Subject: A Dark, Gripping Tale Of The American Dream Turned.......2004-06-13

Vadim Perelman, in his directorial debut, has created an extraordinarily powerful drama with "The House Of Sand And Fog." Award-winning actors Jennifer Connelly and Ben Kingsley give truly great performances in this dark and tragic film of the American Dream turned nightmare. Shohreh Aghdashloo, as Kingelsy's wife Nadi, is superb as is Jonathan Ahdout, (as his teenage son Esmail). And cinematographer Roger Deakins stunning photography sets the mood throughout the film.

Persian immigrant, Massoud Amir Behrani, (Ben Kingsley), is a former colonel in the late, deposed Iranian Shah's air force. He is an intelligent, well educated man, who used to be respected in his native country as a person of position, power, and means. Behrani's former life, with all his efforts to build it, seems like it was constructed on a sea of shifting sand. He came to America with his wife, son, and daughter with limited funds, and has spent almost all of his money setting his family up in the manner to which they had been accustomed. One of the primary reasons for doing this was to marry his daughter to a member of their former social class. He is now reduced to working as a common laborer by day and a convenience store manager by night in order to provide for his family. His co-workers are men he would have given alms to in his native land. Angry and humiliated at how far he has fallen, Behrani decides to invest his remaining funds in a house that has been put up for auction at a Sheriff's Sale, because the owner had not paid property taxes. He wants to make improvements on the house and sell it at a large profit, which he hopes will enable him to provide his family with their former lifestyle, and restore some of his lost dignity.

Kathy Niccolo is a disaster waiting to happen. She is a depressed, quietly self-destructive, recovering alcoholic and addict. Her house, in the California hills overlooking the Pacific, was bequeathed to her and her brother by her beloved father. It is all she has. She is adamant in her refusal to give-up her home because of a bureaucratic error. She was evicted for failing to pay a tax she never should have been charged in the first place. However, with her usual carelessness, she ignored a number of correspondences and warnings from the local tax board.

Sheriff Lester Burdon, (Ron Eldard), delivers the eviction papers to Kathy. She confides in him and he becomes obsessed with helping her fight for justice. Lester finds himself falling in love with Kathy, although he is married with two children and much personal baggage of his own.

The contested ownership of the house is the fulcrum of the intense plot. Two people compete with increasing desperation, for the title to one small bungalow, which has a different meaning for each of them. The tragedy lies in their inability to communicate and understand one another. Part of the movie's incredible power is the difficulty one has in deciding which party to side with, as both are at once sympathetic and worthy of censure.

The film is absolutely riveting and the tension builds to a surprising climax. To say that "The House of Sand and Fog" is not upbeat entertainment is a major understatement. So, although I give the movie my highest recommendation, I do so with reservations. Prospective viewers should be cautioned that the grim intensity of this piece will stay with you for a very long time. Definitely not a films to see twice.

5 out of 5 stars A great story, amazing acting and gorgeous cinematography.......2004-05-18

There are films that you have to see because of the spectacle, films with epic battles, huge explosions, larger than life characters. Then there are movies you need to see because of the story, the acting and the cinematography.

House of sand and fog falls into the second category, and boy, does it deliver just that.

First time director Vadim Perelman chose a great story for his feature film debut, based on the book by André Dubus III. Kathy Nicolo (Connelly) is a broken woman, her husband has left her, she is deeply depressed, so much so that she barely leaves her bed, until one day when the County comes to evict her for failure to pay some business taxes. Kathy is confused, she never owned a business so there were no taxes to be paid. It's all a mistake.

Retired Iranian Colonel Behrani (Kingsley) lives a double life. For the rest of the Iranian-American community, he is a respected and wealthy man who just gave his daughter away in marriage. He lives in a luxurious apartment with his wife Nadi (Aghdashloo) and son Jonathan (Ahdout). But in order to pay for this lifestyle he holds two jobs, one on a road gang and another as a clerk on a convenience store.

One day, Behrani comes across a newspaper ad informing of the auction of Kathy's home. He sees his opportunity to make a huge profit by buying it cheap and then re-selling it at market price. This way he can finally return to his former life and quit his jobs.

Kathy's lawyer (Fisher) finds out that the County made a mistake and shouldn't have place the house on auction, but by then it's too late as Behrani has already bought it. They try to convince him to re-sell the house to County, but he just won't do it.

What follows is the dramatic sequence of events triggered both by Behrani's stubborness and Kathy's lack of self control. And while it's not a 'twist', I must say I did not see the ending coming.

Not everything is perfect in this movie, though. First of all it is extremely slow. Excruciatingly so at points. At one point, I just wanted to have something happen in the movie, but then, things got into motion and rolled until the very end. There's also a side story with Lester, Ron Eldard's character after he leaves his wife and family for Kathy that I thought brought nothing to the story.

The acting simply takes this film to the next level. Connelly, Kingsley and Aghdashloo just disappear into their roles and do some of the best acting of 2003. Connelly makes the viewer both despise and feel sorry for Kathy and all her predicaments. Kingsley is amazing, once more, as the retired Colonel. He transformed himself into an Iranian National, and apparently, took very well to learning their language, even more than what was needed for the part. Aghdashloo brings beauty and frailness to the film. Her face and her expressions are so touching that you just want to go help her.

Then there's the cinematography. The film is beautifully shot, especially the inter-scene shots of the San Francisco Bay. The film was shot by Roger Deakins, who's also worked on A beautiful mind and O brother, where art thou?, and David Stockton.

Both Kingsley and Aghdashloo were nominated for their amazing performances, and Connelly should have been included also, but quite probably was left out by Keisha Castle-Hughes.

    4 out of 5 stars Great!.......2005-03-17

These are two great underrated Woody Allen films. They are unique and funny in their own way. Not the best but still worth owning if you are a Woody Allen fan...
