Product Description
Chris Cole (MARK WAHLBERG) was born to rock. His longtime girlfriend Emily (JENNIFER ANISTON) believes Chris's talent could take him all the way - but instead of writing his own music, Chris worships at the altar of Bobby Beers, the fiery frontman for Steel Dragon, the heavy metal rock legends that both inspire and consume his life. By day, Chris still lives at home with his parents and spends his days repairing copy machines, push-starting his sputtering Dodge Dart and fighting with his brother. But when Chris takes the stage, all of that disappears. When he's fronting Blood Pollution, Pennsylvania's premiere Steel Dragon tribute band, Chris Cole is Bobby Beers - mesmerizing audiences with his perfect imitation of Beers' electrifying vocals and sexy snarl. Blood Pollution's low-rent recreation of the Dragon's elaborate arena shows drive the locals (including Chris's loving parents and amused choir director) into a head-banging, hair-whipping frenzy. The night his bandmates boot him out of the group he founded, Chris is devastated - until an unexpected phone call changes his life forever: he, Chris Cole, has been tapped to replace Bobby Beers as the lead singer of Steel Dragon. In an instant, Chris rockets to the dizzying heights of sudden stardom, rising from devotee to icon, from the ultimate rock fan to the ultimate rock god - the wanna-be who got to be. So what happens when an average guy gets everything he wants... and discovers it's not enough?
Running Time: 106 min.

If you've ever indulged a rock & roll fantasy, Rock Star will give you the vicarious thrill of seeing that fantasy come to life. That's what happens when talented tribute-band singer Chris Cole (Mark Wahlberg) is tapped to replace his idol as frontman for 1980s metal gods Steel Dragon. Chris becomes the groupie-laden "Izzy," his manager girlfriend (Jennifer Aniston) grows weary of sex 'n' drugs on tour, and Rock Star plays out its utterly conventional plot line. Despite the casting of real rockers to support Wahlberg's underrated performance (nicely matched by Aniston and Timothy Spall as Steel Dragon's road manager), his character is too rigidly written to follow an obligatory rise and fall, and even its basis in fact (inspired by Tim "Ripper" Owens's recruitment into Judas Priest) can't conceal the movie's predictable formula. As a cautionary tale it's routine, but as a leather-pants love story, Rock Star's got enough good karma to keep its dream alive. --Jeff Shannon

Being the famous 14-year old rock star Hannah Montana isn't easy, nor is the life of an average Los Angeles middle school student who's trying to figure out her place in the social scene. Imagine, then, how difficult Disney Channel's Miley Stewart's life is considering she's living both lives simultaneously. One of the most down-to-earth pop stars you'll ever meet, Miley goes to exceptional lengths to keep her identity as Hannah Montana a secret from her best friend Lilly because she's afraid of being treated differently in "Lilly, Do You Want to Know a Secret." When Oliver's obsession with Hannah Montana gets to be too much for Miley to handle in "Miley Get Your Gum," she devises a gum-chewing scenario that just about guarantees an end to Oliver's crush on Hannah Montana. Far from the usual adoring fan, Miley's newest crush Josh actually says he doesn't like Hannah Montana in "I Can't Make You Love Hannah If You Don't," so Miley sets out to change Josh's musical preferences. The never-before-seen episode "Money for Nothing, Guilt for Free" finds rich snobs Amber and Ashley in ugly competition with Miley, Lilly and Oliver over a school contest to raise money for the needy while Miley's brother Jackson is bent on beating his father at just about any kind of competition. Bonus features include the Hannah Montana music video "Best of Both Worlds," a backstage interview with Miley Cyrus and her father Billy Ray Cyrus about following your dreams, and Miley's audition tapes. 5 out of 5 stars Fun!!.......2007-06-27

I bought this dvd for my tomboy stepdaughter and she just loves it! Hannah Montana is the best thing Disney has come up with (besides High School Musical that is!)...entertaining and uplifting. Hannah is fun!

3 out of 5 stars i like the show but the music is...........2007-06-25

i love hannah montana but her music is 100 percent bragging. "I got the best of both worlds and you dont haha, i can be anyone and your just a little person...." it goes on and on, if you dont believe me listen to the soundtrack yourself. another problem is that even when just preforming for a live audience outside the show, miley still is dressed as hannah. its just like saying, "dont be yourself, wear a wig like me" besides for that, her show is good.

4 out of 5 stars I really like this show but..........2007-06-19

OK, I'm gonna review the show itself (I don't have the DVD, yet), having seen all the episodes except the pilot. What I like about HM is the on-screen chemistries between Miley and Lilly (Miley Cyrus and Emily Osment); you really get the feeling that these two are very good friends (something that is seriously lacking in a lot of shows). Also, Billy Ray Cyrus pokes fun at his own real-life career, which I find very funny.
Then there's the male best friend rounding out the trio (Oliver; played by Mitchel Musso), and the annoying (in this case, older) brother Jackson (expertly played by Jason Earles). And that's where, in spite of being done better, the sense of deja vu begins. It's like Disney is forever trying to find the next Hilary Duff (hence Hannah's blonde wig). This series could be a taste of what a third season post-Lizzie McGuire the Movie could be like. It's not a bad thing, but when you see and recognize elements from Lizzie McGuire and That's So Raven (including dialogue), then it's time for a rethink. I really like this show in spite of being mostly a kids' show, but I'd love to see more development than a rehash of 'Disney's Greatest Hits'. I'd still buy this DVD and the upcoming Pop Star Profile, and recommend them in spite of this, because it is a good show in spite of minor shortcomings.

5 out of 5 stars I love Hannah Montana.......2007-05-21

I love this TV show. I love everything on Disney Channel. I love Miley, her music, her clothes, and she looks so pretty with that blond wig on. It actualy looks like her natural hair color. She is such a beautiful girl and so talented and amazing. Hannah Montana rocks! How could anyone in their right mind think it was bad?! It's so good. A good show for kids and their families. It's wholesome, G-rated hilarious fun show. I love Emily Osment, who plays Lilly Miley's best friend on the show. I wish I had a best friend like that. She's so sweet and cool. If there any girls out there who want to be my friend, please let me know. I also love her father, Billy Ray Cryus. He's a good singer just like his daughter. Miley's music is pop, country, and a whole lot of fun. I love her music! Buy this DVD. Y'all will love it! It's not crap. It's Disney Channel. It's all about following your dreams and believing in yourself.

In retrospect, it seems absurd that the United States government felt so threatened by the presence of John Lennon that they tried to have him deported. But that's what happened, as chronicled in directors David Leaf and John Scheinfeld's The U.S. vs. John Lennon. The film starts slowly, with a familiar look at the former Beatle's troubled childhood, his outspokenness as one of the Fabs ("We're more popular now than Jesus Christ," etc.), and his eventual hookup with Yoko Ono, paralleled by the growth of political protest in '60s America, particularly against the Vietnam War. John and Yoko went on to stage their own peaceful demonstrations, like the Canadian "bed-ins," but these were largely harmless media stunts. It was when the Lennons moved to New York in the early '70s and took a more active role in the anti-war movement, making friends with radicals like Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, and Black Panther Party founder Bobby Seale, that the government got interested--and paranoid--and men like President Richard Nixon, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, and right-wing Sen. Strom Thurmond began actively looking for ways to silence him (it was Thurmond who came up with the deportation idea). That's also when the film picks up. An array of talking heads weighs in, ranging from Ono and others sympathetic to Lennon's plight (Walter Cronkite, Sen. George McGovern, even Geraldo Rivera) to those on the other side, including Watergate conspirator G. Gordon Liddy. Though The U.S. vs. John Lennon is hardly impartial, it's safe to say that although Lennon was more an idealist than an activist, he was an influential celebrity whom Nixon viewed as a potential nuisance in an election year. And even once Nixon had won the '72 presidential race, the Immigration and Naturalization Service refused to drop its case. Why? "Anybody who sings about love, and harmony, and life, is dangerous to somebody who sings about death," says author Gore Vidal. "Lennon... was a born enemy of the U.S. He was everything they hated." For music fans, Lennon's solo recordings provide the soundtrack. The DVD also contains considerable additional documentary footage. --Sam Graham

Description

The compelling and provocative story of John Lennon's evolution from beloved Beatle to outspoken artist and activist to iconic inspiration for peace, and how, in the midst of one of the most tumultuous times in American history, Lennon stood his ground, refused to be silenced and courageously won his battle with the U.S. Government.

5 out of 5 stars Freedom Isn't Free.......2007-07-04

Today it seems almost quaint that John Lennon was considered subversive durng the late 60's and early 70's. However, as this documentary reveals, post-Beatles Lennon was finding his voice and using his influence to shape the minds of the American youth. Whether collaborating with Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, and Bobby Seales, using his fame to help free John Sinclair, or writing songs and posting billboards to end the Vietnam War; he was being increasingly feared by Herbert Hoover, Richard Nixon, and many others. It's a bit of a grey area as to whether freedom of speech should be guaranteed to a foreigner who hasn't had to fight for it.

One of things that I liked about the film is that Yoko Ono is portrayed in a good light. So many times, she has been portrayed as some evil manipulator who clouded John Lennon's mind and caused the breakup of the Beatles. Here she is as shown as a woman who clearly loved and was in awe of John Lennon. He in turn was happiest when spending time with her and their son Sean In NYC. It's tragic that he was killed at age 40 in 1980, when his life and message were one of love and peace.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent........2007-06-27

I rate this DVD one of the best DVd's on the 'other side' of John Lennon. I thought I knew all about John Lennon but was amazed to find that he was greater than I thought. The special features is a must. I've got my monies worth on the purchase of this dvd.

5 out of 5 stars For Thinking Americans - and you can be one!.......2007-06-11

Every American should view this film and Dixie Chicks: Shut Up & Sing before choosing our next president. Truth prevailed in their cases but will it continue if our "majority" doesn't start making better leadership/power choices.

5 out of 5 stars As Good As I Expected.......2007-06-08

Being a John Lennon fan, The U.S. vs. John Lennon was everything I expected. The movie not only showed John's musical powers, but also his social powers.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous movie.......2007-06-02

This movie is a must for all people who remember John Lennon. It is also for the younger generation who may not know about John Lennon. You'll see the evolution of a man from a rock musician to a peace activist. It is stunning, informative and entertaining all at once. The extras are as interesting as the movie itself. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about the peace movement and be entertained in the mean time.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous concert.......2007-06-27

We were Elvis fans as far back as the 50's and this DVD makes us wish we had gone to one of his concerts. This is a smart, most enjoyable concert. We never thought that watching folks our age performing Elvis numbers could possibly be so much fun; and the finale is off-the-charts great. Having Elvis's voice and huge-screen image at the concert was a magnificent master stroke. Recommend it for everyone with a pulse.

5 out of 5 stars First time I saw Elvis perform!.......2007-06-08

I'm not born in his era, and I bought this DVD for a love one who is agreat fan of his. We watched it together. This was the first time I saw Elvis perform. He is so soulful. He sings with his heart. I love him! They projected him up on a screen above the stage singing (from a previous concert in the 70's) and the actual people who were with him during that partuclar time are all on the stage. So you see band and back up singers when they were younger and on stage current time. They are performing in front of a live audience, so it looks like Elvis is singing with them currntly which makes it look like he's still alive because it looks so current. You will love this DVD! Now I'm anxious to get more Elvis DVDs from amazon!

5 out of 5 stars The Legend Carries On.......2007-05-13

I very much enjoyed this documentary of 'The King'. Knowing the infamous Aloha concert so well, this exciting production made that performance even better. What's different is numerous camera angles during the concert, then & now images of all the previous band and back up singers. Of course there are special features which make it even more interesting. Interviews and discussion on the fine tuning that went into the making of this anniversary concert. Oh yes and there is footage from two other concerts also. It captures the magic and the passion one man had for his love of music.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis - 25th Anniversary Concert.......2007-05-13

Besides the songs being so great to listen to, this DVD was exceptionally wonderful because it showed pictures of Elvis in his younger days with his band and then it would show the band members today with the Elvis impersonator. I think they did a nice job on this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis Lives.......2007-05-10

The blending of the current TCB band with the footage from over 25 years ago is an awesome effect. Elvis is still Takin' Care of Business!

Recorded on a single night in June 2000, In the Flesh: Live is a thrilling live testament to the strength of Roger Waters's peculiar artistic vision. Backed by a crack ensemble of both fresh and seasoned players, the former Pink Floyd songsmith powers through Floyd classics, underserved relics, and highlights from his spotty solo career. The man is in great shape, physically and musically, and he obviously has a blast playing live.

What of the axe work? Accept the fact that Waters and Floyd guitarist David Gilmour no longer play together, and you'll appreciate stand-ins Snowy White and Doyle Bramhall II--and the degree to which they honor the parts and solos immortalized by Gilmour. (See the lavish but impersonal Pulse for a healthy dose of Gilmour's Floyd.) The Dolby Digital 5.1 surround mix is massive, presenting both the music's inherent spaciousness and the favorable acoustics in Portland, Oregon's Rose Garden Arena. The DVD's 18-minute documentary is long on downtime and short on musical interplay. Any way you cut it, though, this is a must for Floyd fans and a real treat for lovers of arty, intelligent rock. --Michael Mikesell

Description

Columbia recording artist and Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters toured the United States for the first time in 12 years in 1999-2000 with his highly acclaimed "In The Flesh" show that presented, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of Waters's music including: early Pink Floyd material; classic compositions from his masterpieces "The Wall" and "Dark Side of the Moon;" less well-known pieces from "Animals," "Wish You Were Here," and "The Final Cut;" songs from the solo tour de force "Amused To Death" and "The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking;" and the debut of a new song, "Each Small Candle." Songs: In the Flesh, The Happiest Days of Our Lives, Another Brick in the Wall Part 2, Mother, Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert, Southampton Dock, Pigs on the Wing Part 1, Dogs, Welcome to the Machine, Wish You Were Here, Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-8), Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, Breathe (In The Air), Time, Money, The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking Part 11 (5:06 am? Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow -Absolutely amazing.......2007-05-14

When I bought this DVD I didn't really know what to expect from Waters, being more of a David Gilmour fan I was a bit skeptical, but totally blown away nonetheless. This is a must have for anyone who loves the late seventies/early eighties Floyd. I hate to admit this, but I actually enjoyed it even more than PULSE.

5 out of 5 stars sweet.......2007-05-09

It is a pretty decent concert- sound and video pretty good- its a keeper

5 out of 5 stars Pink Floyd: Uncovered.......2007-04-27

Being a fan of Pink Floyd's music in the early 80's, this DVD was a real treat! For the first time, seeing Roger Waters singled out was a real eye opener for me. I had only really thought of Pink Floyd as a sum of its parts; not as unique musicians coming together to be a part of something very special.
Seeing Roger on stage, behind the scenes and interacting with his fellow band mates made everything seem more "real", better understood.
I whole-heartedly recommend this DVD for those who are only even partially interested in Pink Floyd's music. The sound quality is unbelieveable and the video quality is at least as good.

"Shine on, you crazy diamond!"

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing!!!!.......2007-04-12

Waters the Pink Floyd's Soul & Brain comes back with this amazing concert, a real masterpiece, the only sad thing is that is not a DTS sound in the DVD but that's not a impediment to enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-02-10

WOW, fantastic sound, entertaining show, polished performers and those wonderful Pink Floyd songs. Personally, I really enjoyed hearing Roger's solo work. My favorite was 'Amused to Death' but 'The Bravery of Being Out of Range' has an upbeat energy and is done very well with a better sound than the released 'faux' concert version on the original album. After seeing Roger's 2006 tour I now think the visuals were the only weakness in this DVD but the true fan will love it and look forward to his next release from The Dark Side of the Moon tour. Here's to hoping!

Sometimes grace and hope come in surprising packages. The title character of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a would-be glam-rock star from East Germany, undergoes a botched gender-change operation in order to escape from the Soviet bloc, only to watch the Berlin Wall come down on TV after being abandoned in a trailer park in middle America. Hedwig gets involved with Tommy, an adolescent boy who steals her songs and becomes a stadium-filling musical act. Suffering from a broken heart and a lust for revenge, Hedwig follows Tommy's tour, playing with her band (the Angry Inch) at tacky theme restaurants. Into this simple storyline, writer-director-star John Cameron Mitchell packs an astonishing mix of sadness, yearning, humor, and kick-ass songs with a little Platonic philosophy tucked inside for good measure. A visually dazzling gem of a movie. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars I Love Hedwig.......2007-06-27

Having seen this film in the theatre twice, I don't know what took me so long to buy the DVD - I enjoy it every time I watch it! It has great heart and empathy and the music is fantastic! John Cameron Mitchell is enchanting as well as the whole cast. It is absurd, outrageous and yes, lovingly done. I especially liked Michael Pitt - he is one of my favorite actors - puts his whole being into every character he portrays.

a great movie , if you enjoy a good musical DEFINATELY take a second look at this film!

5 out of 5 stars weirdWildness.......2007-04-11

My daughters bought this film and both enjoyed it for its weirdwildness. I can't say that I did, but it's a generational thing I guess. They especially liked the music, but again I can't say that I did although I'm a musician myself. Clearly inventive movie making and excellent musicians doing exactly what they want to do, but... I guess it's a generational thing. I don't particularly like Andy Warhol's flicks, or Broadway musicals, or Wagnerian opera, or John Coltrane, Philip Glass, or Modest Mouse indy music either. What's an old classical guitarist to do when the Bach D-minor partita is pulled off the music stand and the cross-dressers appear? The topics are not quite my style, although emotionality is the same across the entire human race. Inventive, wild, weird, very well done, but not my style.

Hedwig Robinson (John Cameron Mitchell) is a rocker. And she's got The Angry Inch beside her (and in her pants). As a young man, Hansel/Hedwig lived in East Berlin, right before The Wall came tumbling down. His sexual identity was always in question and when a cute, black, American soldier gives him a way out of the Eastern Bloc, Hedwig jumps on him (literally and figuratively). But he can't get to the other side of The Wall as a man, so an operation takes place to remove his vital functions below the waist ...if you get my meaning. Needless to say (if you pay attention to the title of the film), the surgery gets botched and leaves Hedwig with his "Angry Inch."

The anger is twofold. First is the failed operation; second is Hedwig's fury over stolen musical material by someone named Tommy Gnosis (Michael Pitt). Tommy is a rock-n-roll sensation, but it's all because of what Hedwig taught him in his early days. So Hedwig, in true b!tchy fashion, follows Tommy's rock tour around the world. But instead of playing in theaters and high end places, Hedwig and his Angry Inch band play at lowbrow restaurants, often to the dismay of its patrons who've simply come in to eat.

Hedwig's decline into obscurity is well played by director/actor John Cameron Mitchell. The musical soundtrack is very well done and the catchy tunes will have most movie watchers tapping their toes along to the rockin' beats. That he also remains angry at some of his band members is quite funny, actually holding them hostage by keeping their passports hidden away.

Revenge is the meal of the day as Hedwig finally meets up with Tommy again, eventually leading to Tommy's career demise and launching Hedwig into the spotlight. But is this what Hedwig really wanted? Not realizing the sacrifices she'd have to make, Hedwig decides to re-open her/his closet and show the world his/her true identity. He also sets free one of his band members who turns out to be a woman masquerading as a man, too.

Those willing to watch a film without sitting in judgement of the material will most likely eat this story up. It's quite funny, well acted, and has a rippingly good soundtrack. But if you're a staunch conservative or -- god forbid -- homophobic, you might want to pass on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Mind-Altering Viewpoint.......2007-03-24

First time I watched this movie I was kinda confused, but felt like I'd just been run over by a truck. Still, I came back a second time, and a third, and a fourth...
And each time it amazes me. The meaning behind this movie and the idea of what makes someone happy might not end up completing them in the long run. *sigh* How many people can this touch before it becomes a cult classic?
Oh wait, It already is! :)

5 out of 5 stars Jimi Hendrix...Woodstock....this a classic...........2007-06-08

This is probably the best DVD you can own if you want to capture the magic of Jimi Hendrix.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Hendrix DVD.......2007-05-30

The production is not too bad, especially for a live concert. The footage of Hendrix does not have any added material mixed into it (a few shots of the crowd). I really liked the second guitarist in the band. It would have been nice to have had more of that sort of thing in Hendrix performances. The other Hendrix DVDs are of what look to be great performances, but the production quality is poor, or the event itself had problems or you have people imposing their impressions of the event onto the performance. With this one, you can sit back, watch Hendrix perform, its reasonably well produced and a good sampling of Hendrix works.

5 out of 5 stars Star Spangled Hendrix dvd.......2007-04-18

This dvd is essential viewing for all of my guitar students. The maestro's set was performed in daylight and there is a lot of focus on his hands. The two percussionists are low in the audio mix, but . . . who cares?!?! You know who the REAL star is! Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchell accompany the maestro Hendrix marvelously. The interviews are quite fun, and the extras make this product worth the price . . . but the real meat is in the music . . . and it's MEATY (slow start, . . . but not FOR LONG).

5 out of 5 stars Jimi Hendrix at his best.......2007-03-11

I believe Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock to be his best live performance from the other performances that are now available on DVD. Jimi had shelved the "Experience" (Noel Redding to be specific) and had put together a group of good friends and old Army buddies. The people in his life who knew him as Jimmy the person ,not as Jimi the guitar God. Though I am certain that they were in awe of his talent, who wouldn't be? He had a new direction he wanted to go and this band was the realization of that dream for him. In my humble opinion, I feel it worked very well. My only regret is that he wasn't able to see this formula to it's fullest potential. He gave the Woodstock audience a sampling of all of his different styles of playing. And with Larry Lee playing second lead/rhythm guitar ,Jimi was able to switch to the role of a backing /support guitarist, something not seen often.Though I wish Larry Lee had opted not to wear the scarf with the fringe hanging over his eyes! This performance was very fresh and ran very smoothly. It was obvious he was having a good time. And just when everybody thought he had reached the highlight of his performance ,he pulls out the Star Spangled Banner. People who don't admire Jimi Hendrix hear the Woodstock version of the Star Spangled Banner as a great disservice to the sanctity of our national anthem. Those of us of admire Jimi for what he is -a genius, hear Hendrix transform his Stratocaster to mimic the sounds of war complete with land mines, missles, crys, confusion, mingled with Taps. Jimi performed the Star Spangled Banner in a way that only he could, like all of his music. I watch my DVD's of his performances, and being a guitarist myself, I have an idea of what he did ,but I don't think anyone will ever figure out how he did it.

5 out of 5 stars This is done right.......2007-03-05

This is worth it just for the 1st CD. The 2nd CD contains footage which is mostly B&W from new sources (8 mm cameras, etc.) and it is so-so. The 1st disc is all of the official footage which is incredible plus interviews at the beginning. The interviews (Mitchell, Lee) weren't really revealing except for the Woodstock organizer. The packaging is well done, too. I know a lot of people were angry at Hendrix's step-sister for putting this out but who cares. Put this on a large screen TV and send the sound through your stereo system at very HIGH volume and you will be totally blown away!!!

Elton John has had too many hits over the last three decades for the 12 songs in this collection to seriously be considered his "greatest," but that's hair-splitting. This hourlong concert, performed by John, his band, and several guest singers before a packed house at New York's Madison Square Garden in October 2000, certainly does contain some of his (and lyricist Bernie Taupin's) best and most popular tunes, like "Candle in the Wind," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," and "Your Song." And while Elton is a rather unlikely pop star these days--chubby, middle-aged, far less flamboyant than in his '70s heyday--he can still put on a good show, and that's just what he and his band (including longtime cohorts Davey Johnstone on guitar and Nigel Olsson on drums) do.

Some of his choices for guests are a bit puzzling: Bryan Adams adds little excitement to "Sad Songs (Say So Much)," while singer Ronan Keating of the British group Boyzone, a virtual unknown in the United States, is superfluous on "Your Song," perhaps Elton's most enduring tune (revived to considerably better effect on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack). On the other hand, Billy Joel is a good foil for Elton on "Yellow Brick Road," Mary J. Blige adds some soulful fervor to "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues," Kiki Dee shows up to duet with Elton on "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" for the first time in several eons, and the young American singer Anastacia is a revelation on a hard-rocking "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting." --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD.......2007-07-03

My eight yr old LOVES Rocket Man so I purchased this DVD for him to learn more about Elton John's music. He LOVED it! Of course, so did my husband and I. Very entertaining. Arrived fast and in great condition.

5 out of 5 stars Best Concert DVD I Own.......2007-06-15

This is the best live concert DVD that I have ever viewed. Video quality is great and both the Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks sound great. I've done some comparison between the DD and DTS tracks and I have to say the DD track has a little more punch but the DTS track is very detailed and clean. The best part of this DVD for me is the audience interaction. Everybody is on their feet for the entire concert and there are so many great guest stars. Billy Joel is great and Mary J Blige, wow! Get this DVD!!

3 out of 5 stars Great Performance - LOUSY Video Clarity.......2007-03-29

If you've read far enough to get to this review, you're probably aware that this DVD contains a great selection of songs, performed well. As a musician, I have thoroughly enjoyed the caliber of musicianship demonstrated by both Elton and his very capable troupe of musicians. The composition of the shots is superb, as is the editing.

HOWEVER, I've watched this on a Hi-Def LCD and was very disappointed with the video quality. It looks like it was shot on VHS. It is quite distracting. If you are a videophile or only plan on watching this on a Hi-Def set, be prepared for very 1990's-looking video. If you can live with that, this is a great set.

2 out of 5 stars Elton disappoints.......2007-03-25

The sound and video quality are excellent. The show is spectacular. Elton sounds terrible. I've never seen Elton live, I'm a casual fan that has enjoyed several of his CD's. I expected him to be a great show perfomer, but I thought he sounded old and tired. It didn't seem like he could hit the notes or even sing some of the lyrics. At times it was unbearable. I expected so much more.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ELTON JOHN VIDEO!.......2007-02-19

THIS VIDEO IS FOR ANY ELTON JOHN FAN! I SAT AND WATCHED THIS WITHOUT LEAVING MY SEAT. EVEN IF YOUR NOT A BIG ELTON JOHN FAN, YOU WILL BE AFTER THIS VIDEO!

Like any good brand, the Rolling Stones know to preserve the formula even when updating the package, and this long-form concert video underscores that market strategy. As with each of their tours since the early '80s, the quartet, augmented by a discreet auxiliary of backup musicians, gives the fans new eye candy while dishing up a familiar set list spiked with Mick Jagger's lip-smacking vocals and Keith Richards's signature guitar riffs. The visual twists are at once spectacular and conservative: a cyclopean main stage design with massive pillars (presumably the Babylonian connection), a vast oval video screen (shades of Big Brother), and a hydraulic bridge enabling a midconcert sortie into the audience, with the Stones playing a more stripped-down, intimate set on a small satellite stage.

That huge physical setting doubtless made the live shows eye-filling rock spectacles, but the video crew necessarily accepts the limitations of the small screen, focusing more on close-ups of the band, rapid cuts, and racing, hand-held tracking shots to convey excitement while keeping the viewer close to the action. The evening's repertoire sticks to the band's most familiar hits, and if the Glimmer Twins occasionally slip their masks to let the routine show, the real wonder is how effectively they keep the playing focused. During the first half of the program, the band's newest songs (especially "Saint of Me" and "Out of Control") elicit conspicuously higher energy from the band, if not the audience. But just as the show seems doomed to a certain anomie, the escape onto the smaller, no-frills stage pumps up players and crowd alike, particularly when they launch into "Like a Rolling Stone," a cover that winds up sounding like a great idea too long deferred. --Sam Sutherland

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superior Concert Video.......2006-10-31

This is by far the best concert video I own. The Stones were on top of their game at this St. Louis concert, soulful, bluesy, and rocking. The cameras stay on the band the whole time, unlike many current concert videos that seem to think the viewer wants to watch the audience. The sound is CD quality, the picture and color is vivid, the editing is tight. The highlight for me is Keith Richards' "I Wanna Hold You" and some incredible versions of many classics. The songs from the Bridges to Babylon album are excellent and it is funny how quickly some of them faded from the permanent repertoire. The fact of the matter is the Stones have enough excellent songs to do ten different concerts.

I highly recommend this DVD. It is superior to the Four Flicks, and a lot less expensive. Five Stars.

5 out of 5 stars Just hits and good performance.......2006-04-06

If you must buy one Rolling Stones DVD concert...you must choose this one; no doubts about that. Great artists performance and just hits on this. I'm a new Rolling Stones fan just because this DVD. Great value!

5 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2006-02-25

Here you'll find Mick, Keith and the boys together with some "cool friends" doing what they do best. ROCK & ROLL!

They have the lovely & talented Lisa Fischer on backup vocals. She really used her "assets talents," all of them. Her voice hits all of those amazing notes that few singers will ever hope aproach.

The "really cool" Joshua Redmond joins in with his saxophone.

Lets not forget the inovative theatrics that we've come to expect from the Stones. The never disapoint me in that area. In this film they do actually cross "a bridge" to Babylon.

If you love the Stones and you love seeing them live or wish you could, this is a great way to see them!

All right, I admit it. I am a huge fan, (can't fool you) since the begining. I've spent more than I'll admit this year on concert Tickets, T-Shirts and DVD/CDs. Not to mention plane tickets!

3 out of 5 stars ok but not the best.......2006-02-24

this dvd is stones but not up to their best. any stones are great so since this is fairly inexpensive i might recommend it

4 out of 5 stars Captures high energy and party atmosphere........2006-01-01

This solid show has some great moments. The 10 minute Miss You version here is the best available, with the whole band acting like they never want it to end. Lisa Fischer, the awesome support singer, is in rare form as she and Mick bump and grind all over the stage. She gets in everybody's business on this one. Surprisingly, Miss You doesn't appear on Four Flicks. Neither does Its Only Rock and Roll, which is a highlight from the B-stage here. Also is a terrific Wild Horses duet with Dave Matthews and Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone-performed better here than on Stripped. Another highlight is Keith's I wanna Hold You, from Undercover. The sound is a slight step down from Four Flicks, but certainly great for when it was released. At the end we get a blazing Juming Jack Flash with Mick sporting cool shades and Keith and Ronnie weaving in and out like they're trying to outdo themselves. Lots of Fun!

If any artist deserved a hagiography it was Jimi Hendrix, and Joe Boyd's 1973 "authorized" tribute adequately sanctifies the legend. Perversely for a documentary, it achieves this simply through well-chosen concert footage rather than through the insights of the various talking heads. Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Lou Reed, and Germaine Greer are all wheeled out to wax lyrical about their days with Jimi, but nothing is more eloquent than watching and listening to him play. From "Hey Joe" in grainy black and white on the Ready Steady Go TV show, classic footage of Monterey, Woodstock (yes, "The Star-Spangled Banner"), and the Isle of Wight festivals to an acoustic 12- string rendition of "Hear My Train a' Comin'," Hendrix the musician speaks for himself.

But if Hendrix the musician shines through, this is not the most insightful profile of Hendrix the man. The circumstances surrounding his death, for example, are hardly touched upon (girlfriend at the time Monika Dannemann gets only a few seconds of screen time). Interview footage with Hendrix himself plus some occasionally rambling and incoherent comments from such intimates as his father, army buddies, ex-girlfriends (including Linda Keith, who "discovered" him in New York and brought him to England), and fellow musicians all take second place to the music itself. The most sensible quote comes from Little Richard, who proves once and for all that he's utterly bonkers when he says of Jimi's music: "At times he made my big toes shoot up into my boot." --Mark Walker, Amazon.co.uk

4 out of 5 stars A Time Machine.......2007-04-05

This video was like a time machine. It took me back to the early 70's. A glimpse of a bygone era of Rock and Roll. The musical performances were wonderful with good quality video and audio. Jimi's acoustic performance of Waitin' for a train was worth the purchase price.

5 out of 5 stars It was a Christmas gift.......2007-01-24

My coworker mentioned her Jimi Hendrix DVD had been ruined by her kid, so I thought it would make for a great Christmas gift to get her one. She was very pleased and even went out and bought a new dvd player.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining and a good light introduction to Hendrix, but not more...........2006-12-11

I believe that this documentary is likely to appeal to two kinds of people. First, those that don't know a thing about Jimi Hendrix, and that will be able to watch an engaging introduction to his life and music that doesn't go to far but entertains. Secondly, those fans that want to have absolutely everything that has to do with Hendrix, and that will treasure this dvd.

On the other hand, I don't think that those spectators that simply want to watch an excellent documentary about a musical icon will be happy with this one, because even though it is good, it is far from outstanding or even very good. It doesn't have enough information about Jimi Hendrix, and it lacks depth. It is entertaining and a good light introduction to Hendrix, but not more.

All in all, I can say that this documentary is good, and deserves at least 3 starts out of 5, but not more. If you expect a documentary about a musician that will make you watch it again and again, give "No direction home" (by Scorcese, about Dylan) a try.

I'll confess up front that I have an emotional attachment to this movie which will color this review - I saw it several times at the cinema during my teenage years, and owned the soundtrack (which i played to death).

Having said that, this is the best Hendrix biography I've seen, & I've seen all of them (I think). The live footage is a cherry-picked selection of Hendrix's best onstage moments (and let's face it, if he only gave the world the ~2.5 mins of Monterey opener "Rock Me Baby", it would be enough), and as others have already said, the 12-string Hear My Train a'Comin' is the jewel in the crown.

The interviews are secondary, but they represent a fascinating snapshot of life in 1973. They are of Jimi's time (or close enough) and by those who knew him. They are incisive, contradictory, insightful, and quite often hilarious. Talking about Hendrix seems to bring out a sincerity and honesty in most of these people which is compelling. The "Ghetto Fighters" are great, and Little Richard is - well, Little Richard.

Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Elvis Show!.......2007-05-14

I was very surprised to see how this show was produced. You actually had the feeling of being at a real Elvis show! Having live singers and performers was truely unique. For those of us not fortunate enough to have seen Elvis in person, this show gave us a brief glimpse at how the experience must have felt!

5 out of 5 stars incredible, simply incredible.......2007-05-08

I just love how the Elvis' original live performance was fused with the original band members who were live on stage. The sound quality was excellent and Elvis' voice tracks actually sounded as if he were singing along with the live band.
