Penny Marshall's popular 1992 comedy sheds light on a little-known chapter of American sports history with its story of a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The league was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men's baseball teams. The AAGPBL continued after the war (until 1954), and Marshall's movie depicts the league in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregonian sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism. They're all a bunch of underdogs, and Marshall (with a witty script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) does a fine job of establishing a colorful team of supporting players including Madonna and (in her movie debut) Rosie O'Donnell. It's a conventional Hollywood sports story (Marshall's never been one to take dramatic risks), but the stellar cast is delightful, and the movie's filled with memorable moments, witty dialogue, and agreeable sentiment. And just remember: there's no crying in baseball! --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars An oldie but a goodie........2007-06-21

I remember watching this movie when I was younger a few years after it came out on VHS. I'll admit that then, I obviously didn't understand the WWII concept (as I was maybe 7 or 8 years old) but it still was a movie that I continually loved to watch. Even now, roughly 15 years after its release, I still thoroughly enjoy this film.

So what's this movie about? It's World War II and there's a need for American sports to raise morale. With the men away, who is going to play? The women, of course! This movie shows the beginnings of mainly two specific teams in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. From the ups and downs stemming from the game, to the ups and downs stemming from the women's personal lives, this movie gives us a glimpse into the lives of women living during the WWII era.

So what's to like about this movie? First of all, there's an abundance of famous actors and actresses including Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, and Rosie O'Donnell. Looking back, I truly didn't appreciate how wonderful the casting was for this movie. Second, this movie forces a ton of emotions out of you. Some scenes are funny, some scenes show hope, and some scenes are sad. It isn't just about baseball. It's mainly about the lives of the women playing the game. Third, anyone, no matter what age, will enjoy this movie. From the older folks who can remember what it was like living during this period, to younger people like myself who simply enjoy the humor, this movie provides so much entertainment.

And what's not to like? Nothing really. As I said above, younger children will like this movie although they probably won't understand the war aspect. Apart from that, this movie contains no other negatives.

When it comes to movies that all will enjoy, A League of Their Own is at the top of my list.

4 out of 5 stars There's no crying in baseball!.......2007-06-15

The men go over seas for war. The All-American Baseball League needs to make money, so they create and All-American Girls Baseball League.

Dottie Hanson (Geena Davis) and her "kid sister Kit," (Lori Petty) play in a local softball league and get recruited to play in the new major league. Jimmy Dugan, (Tom Hanks) a washed up a former baseball player, gets fed up with the girls he manages but then gets used to the change of gender. Dottie ia an awesome catcher and hitter who everyone loves, while Kit is an okay pitcher and hitter who everyone likes. Hanson is the best on the team and everyone knows it, Kits gets jelous and things don't work out too well between them. Madonna (Mae) and Rosie O'Donnell (Doris) are also starring on the team. All the cast members did an awesome job acting.

I thought this movie was going to be boring, because my mom picked it out but it turns out I was laughing hysterically and enjoying th movie. This classic, major league comedy will catch your eye. "A League of Their Own is own of my favorite movies and will soon be yours too.

I recommend this to mostly eight years old and up because of mild language. Other than that this movie flabbergasted me, it is awesome! You will love this movie once you see it!

5 out of 5 stars All-time favorite movie.......2007-04-25

This has got to be my favorite movie of all time. I was a big fastpitch player back in middle school and high school and when this movie came out I was pretty excited. Great actors, great story, and inspiring that it was actually based on a true story. Movies just aren't as good now-a-days like they used to be back in the 80s and 90s. This is a must see!

4 out of 5 stars Girls play ball?.......2007-04-04

This baseball movie set in the middle of WWII, is excellent, and my granddaughters watch it over and over! Since my granddaughters are avid softball players this true story video about a woman's baseball league helps promots woman sports in a very realistic way. Highly recommended for any baseball coillection and for viewing by all girl ball teams, they will love it!

4 out of 5 stars What did the nation do for sports entertainment while all the young men were off at war? .......2007-03-12

According to "League of their Own", womens' baseball teams were formed to keep the sports fans happy. So, Rosie had an option for a bat as well as a riveter. "League of their Own" is not a completely accurate picture of the life of women during World War II, but it's a very entertaining film about women's self reliance and learning to play on a team.
