Amazon.com essential video
A volatile, toxic potion of satire and nihilism, road movie and science fiction, violence and comedy, the unclassifiable sensibility of Alex Cox's Repo Man is the model and inspiration for a potent strain of post-punk American comedy that includes not only Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), but also early Coen brothers (Raising Arizona, in particular), Men in Black, and even (in a weird way) The X-Files. Otto, a baby-face punk played by Emilio Estevez, becomes an apprentice to Bud (Harry Dean Stanton), a coke-snorting, veteran repo-man-of-honor prowling the streets of a Los Angeles wasteland populated by hoods, wackos, burnouts, conspiracy theorists, and aliens of every stripe. It may seem chaotic at first glance, but there's a "latticework of coincidence" (as Tracey Walter puts it) underlying everything. Repo Man is a key American movie of the 1980s--just as Taxi Driver, Nashville, and Chinatown are key American movies of the '70s. With a scorching soundtrack that features Iggy Pop, Fear, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, and Suicidal Tendencies. --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars So weird, eighties weird........2007-05-16

I bought this movie because it was inexpensive and, randomly, one of the lecturers in my bar exam review course mentioned it in his video lecture. He didn't know how to describe it, but claimed it reminded him of a some of the repo guys he'd met as a property lawyer. I don't really know how to describe it, either. It's sort of "Big Lebowski," but set in the eighties and with less drugs. The characters are all pretty messed up without drugs. It is surreal, and very random. You should give up on the plot and just enjoy the scenes as they come. The plot, such as it is, will work itself out. This is not a movie for people who need to understand things, who need everything to make sense. When I first watched it, I was strung out from studying for two months and didn't want to think any more. For me, it was perfect. Weird, ridiculous, and amusing. If you approach it with a similar attitude, I'll think you'll enjoy. :)

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Alex Cox's Best- Emilio Estevez's, too.......2007-04-19

This movie is truly amazing. It holds up to repeated viewing and I should know, because I've been watching it repeatedly since I bought it around ten years ago. You can just go on and on about the mountainous high points this film has, from Harry Dean Stanton, the western style camera work Alex Cox would later revisit in Straight to Hell, the crackpot philosophizing, the nonsensical alien conspiracy and ensuing government conspiracy, Rev. Larry, the cartoonish punk thugs, seedy Los Angeles, and some other little things like the dialogues ("I installed two ways mirrors in his place in Brentwood"), acting (everyone essentially "disappears into their character"- even the guy from Conan the Destroyer), and the plot.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy release of a CLASSIC.......2007-04-11

I'm not going to try to sell you on this movie, if you don't get why it's a classic, I can't be bothered to try to explain it to you. If you know and love this movie, this release is worth the price - it looks good, the commentary track is lots of fun.

4 out of 5 stars Irradiated.......2007-03-09

When I first saw this movie about 20 years ago I didn't know what to make of it. I was about thirty then. I still don't know, but I do know it has enough merit as a SciFi movie to deserve at least a rental. For someone to associate this as sexist, cruel, sadistic, unholy, or any other negative societal connotation is certainly understandable. It is probably those things because it was meant to be. I doubt saying Hannibal Lechter was a cannibal would surprise the author or director of "Silence of the Lambs". So trying to equate displays of anti-feminist, anti-christian, or anti-social behavior with intelligence is rather moot. The movie is what it is. You will love it or hate it probably. Imagine crossing "Reservoir Dogs" with "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" or "Raising Arizona" with "Snatch" and you begin to understand. You can't fit it in your genre specific box. So if you are open to sub-cultural wacky movies, you may be entertained.

1 out of 5 stars lobotomy.......2007-03-04

This is about the worst movie I've ever seen, and I've seen it twice (just to make sure).
Although I've seen it twice, I can't really tell you what it's about because it is too boring and idiotic to follow. But it was clearly made for people who think that juvenile behavior is "cool".

If you think that men who treat women in an insulting manner are "cool" (and there are a lot of you out there), then you might like this movie.
But if you are a thoughtful and intelligent person, this movie is a waste of time. You've been warned.

4 out of 5 stars Good Christian Movie!.......2007-03-30

I thought this was a good movie, with a solid action drama story to go along with the christian message of love and hope.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!.......2007-02-28

I saw this movie on TV for the first time and right away began looking for it to buy. Last Flight Out is a very clean Christian movie but in no way would I call it lame. It works great for a family movie or a witnessing tool. In this story you have a hard headed, unsaved man - a very 'joyous' Christian - a dedicated Christian woman (who is also a women of prayer) - and a father who is bitter, and afraid of losing his last child. So basically, it covers all the bases.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2006-04-02

Wonderful mix of suspense, drama, romance. Columbian terrorists try to distroy a South Amerian village. Well-written. Teaches character, integrity, and insight into life's ulitmate purpose. Definitely 5 stars. After watching it on TV, I had to buy it!

2 out of 5 stars Safe, nice, pleasant, but otherwise disappointing .......2006-01-31

This is an ok movie for a Saturday afternoon. It's inoffensive and perhaps a little more dramatic that an episode of the A-Team and only provokes the viewer to wonder what exactly other actors do do when not working on bigger movies. This is not to say most of the characters don't gel, they do, it's just that the end product is a hodgepodge of something resembling a turd that even though stepped in refuses to offend the steeper.

About the actors involved, I can fully understand most of the actors making an appearance in this movie, except for the delectable Miss Bobbie Phillips who has so much to offer dramatically, sensually and erotically. Bobbie is excellent at times but the script and general lack of story slows her rhythm down and refuses to ignite any real feelings of suffering or tragedy the movie deals with.

Can't help feeling the movie could have been artistically better and more exciting had it not been tied down to so many moral underpinnings.

Keith.

5 out of 5 stars Chasing Destiny.......2007-02-17

This is a great movie with Lauren Graham. Lauren has a leading part in this movie and it is just a really nice "feel good" movie. This movie shows Lauren's great acting abilities.

1 out of 5 stars poor, with smatterings of rubbish..........2006-03-23

not good in any way...any possibilities for chemistry or interest completely wasted, and has about every possible cliche in the book without even trying to do anything original... how on earth do these things ever get made!?!?

3 out of 5 stars A Gilmore Fan.......2004-12-05

This was a very cute movie. I have become a big fan of Gilmore Girls and I was looking for more of Lauren Grahams work. While she has been in some major motion pictures her roles often seemed small. In this movie she has a starring role and you can really see a great performance. Don't expect to see the same Loreli Gilmore. Her character in this is very different!

The story line is a cute little romantic comedy. While it's not some great 5 star movie it is very watchable and something I would share with family and friends.

The story is about Jessy (Lauren Graham) who comes home to see her father Jet James (Christopher Lloyd) who is in the hospital dying. His best friend and fellow musician Nehemiah Peoples (Roger Daltrey) is staying at his home (somewhat of an uncle for Jessy.) Jet a stereotypical rock star who has spent all his money. While trying to hide her fathers car from the repo man Jessy ends up meeting Bobby Moritz (Casper VanDien). They begin a relationship and Jessy believes that Bobby is a strugling poet. She becomes upset when she learns that Bobby is really the nasty collection agent that has been hounding her father.

I could not find this movie at my local video stores. For this price it was a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Awaiting Destiny.......2001-12-19

IF you are a hopeless romantic then this movie is definetly
for you. If you are just looking for a laugh, some emotion,
and a good time, check it out! I, for one, fit into both categories hence the 5 stars...

4 out of 5 stars I love this movie!.......2001-03-23

I love this movie! I've watched it a couple of times now, and who'd have thought Roger Daltrey would turn out more sexy than Casper Van Dien! I just wish there had been more of the music. I played the ending over and over, listening to the songs. The love story was sweet, too.

      Customer Reviews:

      Description

From the very start, filmmaker Alex Cox has kept his audiences off-guard and unprepared for what he had in store. Even his detractors would be hard pressed to argue with that. He's one of the most independent and free-thinking filmmakers out there and this box set celebrates his career with the special edition DVDs of DEATH AND THE COMPASS, REPO MAN, STRAIGHT TO HELL, and THREE BUSINESSMEN.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of wide ranging movies.......2003-02-23

Alex Cox is probably the most underappreciated guy in the business. All four movies are unique, fun, intelligent and -different-.

Repo Man is simply a classic 'indie film' - humour, insight, bizzare plot twists - it's all here. A must see. Straight to Hell is similar to "Dusk Till Dawn" - yet somehow better. But the standout is Three Businessmen --- Cox goes Becketesh to wonderful results.

If you like screwball comedies, punk rock, action movies, romantic comedies, sci-fi, and high faluting art things you'll love this collection!
