I watch this movie every Groundhog Day with my wife. Goundhog Day just happens to be her birthday and she loves this movie! A smart funny romantic comedy with Murry at his comedic best. The DVD is a good transfer and should be in everyones collection.

This is one of the funniest movies you're going to see...but it's also got some thoughtful messages about life. Some of the funniest scenes are when Murray's character realizes he not only can't get out of Groundhog's Day, but there are no consequences to his actions, because he keeps waking up to the same day. What follows is a hilarious string of self-destructive situations...just how many ways CAN a person try to kill themselves?! My personal favorite scene is in the diner, where Murray gorges on every artery clogging breakfast treat, while smoking a cigarette...gluttony at it's best! As the movie moves along and he tires of his self-descructive attitude, Murray's character starts to explore the possibilities of having unlimited time to do all the things a person would ever want to do and how much more meaningful it is to be kind instead of cruel. Interesting twist...while being lots of fun.

I must say that I love Stripes and Ghostbusters while Groundhog day isn't my favorite movie. I can still quote Stripes and some of Ghostbusters which greatly impressed my teenage son. These movies are super!!!!!! The team of Bill Murray & Harold Ramis is excellant. They really have a great chemistry whether it is acting together or whether Ramis is directing Murray. I highly reccomend these movies!!

    "Groundhog Day" (1993) is a comedy... in its surface... but a thoughtful metaphor on meaning of life underneath.
    Does this mean you will not laugh? No. It IS a comedy but there is more, MUCH more.

    The story is quite simple: a noted TV weatherman, cynical and embittered Phil Connors, is sent with his crew to report Groundhog Day. A snow storm ground the team at Punxsutawny, driving Phil mad with impatience & impotence. The frustrating day ends, Phil go to sleep and when he awakes... it's Groundhog Day again. And again, and again, and again. Phil is horrified. The movie chronicles his eternal re-living.

    There's enough stuff to laugh in earnest with poor Phil marooned in a boring day. His way to cope with this situation ranges from desperation to resignation; from egotistical attitudes to caring for others; from boredom to making the best of a bad day.
    I think is a metaphor of human life. Each of us may choose, even in constrained situations, what to do with our lives and live it to its ending.

    Bill Murray gives a top-notch performance showing all the emotions that rage thru his character. Andie Mac Dowell as the producer of the TV team is a sweetheart as always.

    Ten points for the idea! It is a very enjoyable film for all audiences.
    One last thing, if you like the "re-living" subject you may enjoy the book "Replay" by Ken Grimwood, it is centered on "replaying" a whole life!

    This is without a doubt, one of Bill Murray's best films. It is both a fantasy and a comedy flick. The basic premise of the film is simple. A man is forced to relive the same twenty four hours, over, and over, and over again, ad infinitum.

    Bill Murray is that man. An obnoxious Pittsburgh weatherman, he is in Punxutawney, Pennsylvania to cover its Groundhog Day celebration, along with his beautiful and altruistic TV producer, played by Andie MacDowell, and his patient, long suffering cameraman, played by Chris Elliot. Murray, playing an uncaring, unfeeling wretch of a guy, is, for some inexplicable reason, forced to relive the same twenty four hours in Punxutawney over and over again. Why? Who knows and who cares? What follows next are some of the funniest moments in film.

    At first, Murray is confused. No one else, however, seems to be. As Murray continues to relive the same day, confusion turns to anger. Ultimately, that anger turns to mischieviousness and indulgence. After all, what would one do, if there were no consequences to one's actions?

    This premise provides for quite a few, very funny scenes. This puckish foray quickly denigrates into profound despair, as Murray realizes that he seems destined to relive the same day forever. Frequent, subsequent suicide attempts fail to stop the clock, and Murray rethinks his position. He concentrates , finally, on becoming the best man that he can be, with the lovely Andie MacDowell as his romantic interest.

    Murray's transition from smarm to charm provides for many hilarious scenes that will leave the viewer howling with laughter. The ultimate impact of his transition from Neanderthal man to Renaissance man is, needless to say, a positive one. This redemption will ultimately prove to be be Murray's salvation.

    Murray provides droll, comedic delivery, and he is perfect in this role. Andie MacDowell is the perfect straight man and comedic foil. Together they make this movie one that the viewer will want to see again and again.

    Bill Murray has done many funny films "The Man Who Knew Too Little (1997)" and many profound films "The Razor's Edge" (1984). This film is profoundly funny. What would you do if you had all the time in the world? This movie covers just about everything you can think of.

    Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is a conceited self-serving weatherman. He gets caught in a time warp while covering the Groundhog Day events. Everyday becomes Groundhog Day. After exhausting all the fun things you can do, he has time to confront himself and reflect on what is important.

    In "Joe Versus the Volcano" (1990) people relate that environment to where they work.

    Groundhog Day summed this up in one statement:

    Phil Connors asks, "What would you do if you were stuck in one place and every day was exactly the same, and nothing that you did mattered?"

    Ralph answers, "That about sums it up for me."

Snowed in during a road-trip expedition to watch the famous groundhog encounter his shadow, Murray falls into a time warp that is never explained but pays off so richly that it doesn't need to be. The elaborate loop-the-loop plot structure cooked up by screenwriter Danny Rubin is crystal-clear every step of the way, but it's Murray's world-class reactive timing that makes the jokes explode, and we end up looking forward to each new variation. He squeezes all the available juice out of every scene. Without forcing the issue, he makes us understand why this fly-away personality responds so intensely to the radiant sanity of the TV producer played by Andie MacDowell. The blissfully clueless Chris Elliott (Cabin Boy) is Murray's nudnik cameraman. --David Chute

      I watch this movie every Groundhog Day with my wife. Goundhog Day just happens to be her birthday and she loves this movie! A smart funny romantic comedy with Murry at his comedic best. The DVD is a good transfer and should be in everyones collection.

      This is one of the funniest movies you're going to see...but it's also got some thoughtful messages about life. Some of the funniest scenes are when Murray's character realizes he not only can't get out of Groundhog's Day, but there are no consequences to his actions, because he keeps waking up to the same day. What follows is a hilarious string of self-destructive situations...just how many ways CAN a person try to kill themselves?! My personal favorite scene is in the diner, where Murray gorges on every artery clogging breakfast treat, while smoking a cigarette...gluttony at it's best! As the movie moves along and he tires of his self-descructive attitude, Murray's character starts to explore the possibilities of having unlimited time to do all the things a person would ever want to do and how much more meaningful it is to be kind instead of cruel. Interesting twist...while being lots of fun.

        Stripes
        Bill Murray was heading toward a career peak on the back of comedies such as this one from 1981, the second film in his ongoing collaboration with director Ivan Reitman (the two went on to make Ghostbusters). Murray plays a chronic loser who joins the army and fails to find a fan for his ironic sensibilities in his by-the-book sergeant (Warren Oates). When push comes to shove, however, the smirking hero takes charge of his ragtag unit and turns them into fighting machines, albeit to the rhythm of hit songs by Manfred Mann and Sly Stone. The film is occasionally funny, but it mostly plays like any one of a dozen underachieving comedies featuring players from Saturday Night Live and SCTV. --Tom Keogh

        Two of the funniest US films from the 80's or early 90s.

        STRIPES is a spirited, almost anarchic comedic romp through army life. Of course, the plot development half way through becomes improbable, but it links well with the original premise.

        GROUNDHOG DAY is a sublime piece. The subtle changes in plot to work in the circular time reference are precisely done. Murray displays a delicate performance, with the right amount of comedic timing, with the necessary seriousness to keep the plot ticking along.

        Murray has undertaken a number of films, but these two, particularly presented in a package, reveal Bill Murray at his best.
