Not the best movie in the world.......2005-08-10
I saw this movie and I found it both shocking and choking. It displays children as young as 4 years old smoking cigarettes! Did the filmmakers take into account the damage tobacco could have done to these child stars? (Yes, the cigarettes and the smoke were real, not CG.) I think they should have omitted such scenes from the script, because it displays a behavior that's not only illegal in several countries, but also threatening to both society and childhood. No matter what the other reviewers thought about the movie, I give it a disgusting 1, and this is the last movie I ever watch that depicts smoking children. To those that haven't yet watched this movie, please DON'T WATCH IT, unless you want cancer to win the health wars.
And here I hand out a lesson for every active or aspiring moviemaker: if you want to depict smoking children, use COMPUTER GRAPHICS instead of the REAL THING!
A remarkable movie !!.......2005-04-24
I have seen this movie on the German TV yesterday with the title: "A summer at the sea" and I was deeply impressed.
Despite that it was produced in 1990, the theme is more up-to-date than ever. Excellent actors of all ages performed very well indeed, a great story, some romantic spots and lovely music will make you thinking about the relationship of children to their parents, their pain and childish emotions which often get hurt.
This story could happen today, next month or the following year, next door of you .. or at any other location or country. So you will get nothing NEW out of that movie but the sad reality of daily life in the eyes of children whose parents can't behave.
I only can highly recommend this movie - buy the DVD and you will enjoy it definitively more than just one time.
Entertaing coming of age story.......2005-04-22
I saw this movie back in the mid 90's on Bravo, before it sold out and went commercial. I really enjoyed this film, it is very simple and believable, I felt I was on holiday with this family. This is like as Sunday afternoon movie you would put on and relax and watch.
Well written story.......2004-02-28
This film set on the beaches of Brittany, is an engaging story that shows the pleasure and pain of adolcence. During the summer of 1958 two sisters, 13 and 8, are too much for their governess too handle. There spirited antics take them from pranks to real trouble. But neither of the girls are ready for the path that their mother has chosen. Diane Kurys did a wounderful job directing this film.
Coming of age adventure at Brittany's Beaches..........2003-07-04
During the late 50s Frédérique and Sophie, two sisters 13 and eight years old, are sent with a governess to spend their summer in Brittany. Their parents never disclose why they are not going to Brittany with them, but the secret cannot be kept from the children. As the film unfolds the children commit several shenanigans when failing parental supervision surrounds them, however, one day Frédérique trips on the secret of why the parents did not come with them to Brittany it changes her view of life. C'est La Vie is an interesting "coming of age" film where the audience follows the summer of two young girls containing friends, love, adventure, and betrayal. The story intrigues through humor and tragedy, which ends up being a pleasing cinematic experience.

great love story with a sad ending.......2007-04-27
this is a very serious and very good romance out of hongkong. you can see some realistic hongkong peoples' lifestyles and their daily struggles. the leading actress simply is one of the most irresistible cute female actors with real talent. i remember she was some kind of miss hongkong turned actress, not just a brainless bimbo with a pretty face. very enjoyable to watch but the ending is very sad. but of course, great romances usually never ended in happiness or happily thereafter, otherwise it won't haunt you longer than the other genre movies. what love stories could give you are usually sweet at the beginning, in the middle, then things would turn sour and bitter, and of course, usually the format for a great romance is either the man or the woman got a incurable cancer or died in a accident and well, when it happened, usually the other one was far far away. at least the one, the man could reach the dying woman in hospital in time.
enough said, just watch and enjoy it.
One Great Movie.......2004-03-04
I rented this movie on a whim just to check it out and im definately glad I did. I have no idea why people seem to think this movie is for 'teenage girls' because Im not a teenage girl and I really liked this. No, Im not usually into romance movies...they usually are so sappy im looking for the remote within the first 15 minutes. This was completely different, The acting and the story is so captivating, especially to me, as I could relate to the main character, being that im a musician as well. Thats what grabbed me from the beginning, the sheer reality of it, unlike the 'we're rich, snobby people in love but oh what a wacky love it is!' garbage, drivel most American romance movies are. Sure the plot had a few weak moments, but what movie doesnt? What really made this movie stand out to me was the ending..stark and real, not the typical 'everything is great!' hollywood nonsense. I wont give away too much, but the change was definately refreshing. do yourself a favor and rent or buy it.
love story with a difference.......2000-06-03
It's a love story with a little melodrama and a tragedy. And like most love stories, the plot is fairly transparent. However, what differentiates this movie from the run-of-the-mill romances are the strong performances of the leads, a well written script and lovely supporting characters. The film isn't merely about love, it's about life and living life in a positive way. It doesn't really dwell too much on melodrama or tragedy, instead prefering to concentrate on hope and living life.
Loosely, the plot is about a angry music composer, Kit, who is unable to make it in the commercial world because of his "principles." He breaks up with his superstar girlfriend and moves to a poorer part of town where he meets Min, her family and members of the Chinese opera troupe that Min is a part of. Kit rediscovers his love for his craft not only from his interaction with the positive-thinking-live-live-to-the-fullest Min but also from the members of the opera troupe. Their closeness and their passion for a dying craft helps Kit in his search for meaning.
I loved it that director Derek Yee let many of the street perfoming scences run. He just lets them sing. Music plays an integral part in this film. One of the loveliest scenes is the one where Kit jams with the Uncle and a Filipino band in Min's house.
I recommend this film and if you like it, I suggest watching the HK "Lost and Found." Another tale of hope in the face of tragedy with a lot less melodrama than most.
Uh oh.......2000-01-18
It appears as if the C'est la Vie (HK film) reviews are linked to some insipid europop act. So for the benefit of those looking for a film review I will say this: Imagine a room full of grown men (and a few women) crying because of a film. That is what Anita Yuen did to us. Simply put it is a tear-jerker kind of film but done in a humanistic unglossy kind of way only Hong Kong could pull off. I guess that is the benefits of still being a fledgling industry is that you can get away with sentimental and nobudget films without looking cheap; it just looks honest instead. suffice to say I liked it and still think Anita Yuen is one of the best things since swiss cheese.

Customer Reviews:
An amusing movie of manners and seduction, with a decidedly ironic conclusion.......2006-09-28
Is it possible to hurt those who are incorrigibly superficial? Probably. In René Clair's Les Grandes Manoeuvres, an amusing film of manners, morals and seduction, you can watch how to do it in style.
Lieutenant Armand de la Verne (Gerard Philipe) is a dashing young officer of the 33rd Dragoons. His regiment is based in a small provincial French town. The time is well before World War I. de la Verne has a reputation of having seduced just about every daughter, wife and mistress among the town's grande bourgeoisie and petit nobility, not to mention their maids and a number of night club singers. He's charming, confident, light-hearted and may even mean some of those endearments and pledges he whispers, at least when he's whispering them. His regiment will be going on maneuvers in 30 days, and a wager is placed between his friends in the regiment and their civilian friends. A woman will be chosen at random, and if Armand has not seduced her before the regiment leaves, he and his friends will pay for a sumptuous farewell dinner. If he succeeds, their friends will pay. Armand is supremely confident. So are his friends. The woman turns out to be Marie-Louise Riviere (Michelle Morgan), single, divorced and the proprietor of a millinery shop. The women of the town have been polite toward her but suspicious. She is, after all, an outsider and divorced. A reputation can be extraordinarily fragile when upper-class gossips start whispering together. Not only does Lt. de la Verne begin finding reasons to be gallant toward Madame Riviere, so does Victor Duverger (Jean Desailly), a cautious citizen of the town who is just as worried about his own reputation. He has two sisters who don't approve. Marie-Louise has no wish to see her reputation ruined, despite all those who are observing and who love to have something to talk about behind their fans. Then, to Armand's befuddlement, in the process of seduction he begins to fall in love. By then, everyone is aware of his attempts with Marie-Louise, and all his well-worn (and previously successful) lines are repeated with laughter by his friends, by the women he has seduced and in some cases even by those he didn't. Marie-Louise hears the whispers...even worse, she learns of the wager. This movie which is so stylish, which glows and smiles with such elegant artificiality, has a decidedly ironic ending.
The movie is permeated with a gorgeous sense of unreality. The costumes and colors are vibrant; the scenes in the town streets, the drawing rooms, the ball rooms are almost like exquisite drawings. The officers strut along in their red pants, polished black boots and stiff collars. It's apparent that to be a success as an officer one must dance well. Michelle Morgan is a vision with her long neck, blond hair and enigmatic eyes. Gerard Philipe, however, is the center of the story. He's a seducer, a happy comrade, a man who loves a challenge in love and is unafraid of a challenge for a duel. He is so completely superficial that his growing acquaintance with love and his final look at a pair of closed shutters is touching. Gerard Philipe was one of France's greatest actors and leading men in the Fifties. He was 33 when he made this film. He was dead four years later. He said he was feeling poorly and went to his doctors for a check up. They discovered he had cancer of the liver. He died weeks later at the age of 37.
And for those whose pulse may not quicken at the thought of watching a foreign language film, remember that René Clair worked in Hollywood during WWII (and was stripped of his French citizenship by the Vichy government). Look for I Married a Witch, It Happened Here and And Then There Were None.
Les Grandes Manoeuvres can be found on VHS if you look for it. I thought the color lacked some of the vitality of the original film. There is a Region 2 DVD which the reviews say is a knock out.
picturing 19th century French army life.......2006-04-09
Set in a 19th-century French provincial garrison-town, director Rene Clair's plot centers on a bet between army officers to marry a local female shopkeeper. In true 1950's style, 'Les Grandes Manoeuvres' (= French for 'the big army excercises') takes plenty of time to develop its plot. Making sure you don't miss out on any relevant detail. To the standards of our days the pace of this movie might be a little too slow.
Whatever, 'Manoeuvres'' high quality in acting and picturing is beyond doubt. It shows great leads by Gerard Philipe and Michele Morgan. Also one of the best Brigitte Bardot-performances from her early years. Some criticism may be found in this movie's slight lack of spontaneous human warmth.

Product Description
