One of the brighter lights to shine from the late-'90s Saturday Night Live cast permutation, Chris Rock successfully made the jump to his own HBO series and snagged a couple of Emmy Awards along the way. Part Saturday Night Live and part Arsenio Hall-style show (with a raucous studio audience), this best-of video shows that Rock has definitely grown into his own style and matured as a comedian. The segments from Rock's early shows tend to suffer from that Saturday Night Live malady in which a one-joke skit is stretched out for an excruciating period of time (see: Mike Myers). Rock's penchant for beating a dead horse is most apparent in his parodies of Fox-style reality-based shows ("When Animals Attack in High Speed Chases II"), which are genuinely clever but run on a little too long. However, when Rock sticks to live-action comedy, he proves he's one of the funniest (and most satirical) comedians around, playing with issues of politics, race, and gender mercilessly. Hands down the most hilarious segment is a CNN-style "panel" on the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, hosted by Rock and featuring "Black Guy," "White Dude" and "Sista." Most attempts at lampooning this Presidential faux pas have fallen flat on their faces, but Rock and his cast take no prisoners as they skewer the players, the media, and the "man-on-the-street" mentality surrounding the hype. Other highlights include a male version of "The Rules" as interpreted by Ike Turner, continuing coverage of the rising career of rapper Pootie-Tang and his unique brand of urban slang, and Rock's petition to rename a street in Howard Beach after Tupac Shakur (one of the few pre-filmed segments that keeps its momentum going). Not as funny as you might guess.......2005-01-30

Though I'd never seen the show, I ordered volume 2 because Chris Rock is the funniest man in the world. I was really disappointed. It's nothing like his stand-up. It's just a not-great sketch show. I laugh more during any given episode of SNL. The taxi cab confessions stuff is pretty good. Not worth owning.

Chris Rock is Much Funnier Than This DVD Shows.......2004-04-02

Some people are more suited for sketch comedy while others are better at standup. Chris Rock is definitely a standup comedian. Be forewarned that this is a collection of moments from his HBO show and not a standup set. These sketches are not very funny nor are they original.

I don't have cable TV, and if I did, I would never be home to watch it, so with this being my first exposure to the Chris Rock Show, no wonder it is the hit it is. Great work.

Chris Rock is hilarious but this DVD isn't.......2001-12-21

I personally believe Chris Rock is the funniest comedian ever. I purchase both Vol1 & Vol2 of "the Best of the Chris Rock Show". The 2nd DVD deserves 4.5 out of 5 stars, without a doubt but the first volumne is pale in quality, length & content.

Chris Rock lives up to his reputation on this second collection of sketches and parodies from his HBO series--he is not only funny, he has a genuine political edge, pointing up contradictions and racial tension in American society. His material ranges from mock investigative reports (including an exposé of racist toys like "Mr. Sweet Potato Head" and "Low Expectations Scrabble") to commercial parodies (such as ads for the Malcolm X Games--"Because being extreme isn't just for white devils anymore"). But his best work has got to be his genuine on-the-street interviews, in which he asks men at boxing gyms to name their favorite white fighter or asks random New Yorkers if black people should receive reparations for slavery. He even goes down to South Carolina to talk to residents about why the Confederate flag flies over the state capitol; he finally gets a number of people on the street to agree to a different flag that replaces the stars in the Confederate flag with the stars of the WB (like Brandy and Robert Townsend). What people are willing to say in front of him is both funny and frightening. Chris Rock makes cutting-edge comedy seem simple; after an hour of this show, it's incomprehensible why Saturday Night Live and Mad TV are so abysmally toothless. --Bret Fetzer

How many volumes and how much will we pay?.......2007-01-06

People keep writing that these "Best of..." DVDs are incomplete and duplicate the same stuff on different DVDs. This Vol. 2 kind of demonstrates that this is true, in my opinion. We're being played (no pun intended), and if we want to have these skits to watch forever, we'll keep buying with high hopes we're not getting robbed. Shame on Lorne Michaels, et al. You surely have enough money by now that you can reward faithful SNL viewers with complete discs of new material on each separately-priced disc. Come on.

Not nearly as funny as volume 1.......2005-08-03

This is my 2nd review in seven years. I bought this because of the almost 5 star rating. I loved volume 1 and thought this would be even better. The only things really funny were the racist toys, Mike Tyson for president (10 seconds long?), what not to do when getting pulled over by a cop and the taxi cab confessions. The confessions are a 30 minute video extra; otherwise this DVD would have nothing on it. It's a long hour when you hardly laugh. And what happened to Wanda Sykes?? She was hilarious in the 1st volume. If I had to do this again I'd buy only volume 1.

If you think Chappelle's Show is funny and you haven't seen the Chris Rock Show, you are in for a treat. You telling me you haven't seen the ORIGINAL Pootie Tang interview? Hilarious. Chris Rock's comedy is some of the best. A lot of Chappelle's Show skits aren't as up to par as some of the stuff on here. Chris Rock is one of the greatest comedians alive. I love this show. I wish they would continue making more seasons of this show. I would also recommend the FDTV: Volume One DVD. It has a different style of comedy blends that Chris Rock and Chappelle's Show doesn't have. As far as this DVD goes, BUY SEASON 1 & SEASON 2 of the Chris Rock Show. This stuff is classic.

Until season release sets come about, this one's it........2005-02-25

The first Best-Of had some great skits, but having now seen volume 2, I know there's MUCH MORE out there that deserves to be released as well!

Chris Rock always knows how to make the best laughs out of any situation, and he does it well. Spoofing society and all within and all that it makes, skits like "Mike Tyson for President", "Progress Report", the exceptional "Halle Berry 911", "S**tstorm" (okay I bleeped two letters but it really is gut-bustingly funny to watch!), "Racist Toys", "UPN News", "Baby 1 Credit", "Make You Wait Hair Salon", the never-stop-laughing "Educational Video", and basically all the rest will keep you in stitches! In short, even without namedropping some of the skits, the only one that failed to amuse me entirely was "The Next Great White Hope". But even then, that one still had its moments.

Audio and video quality are rather good for a contemporary TV show release. Video is mostly crisp, though there is some artifacting that might not look good on HDTV. But that's hardly worth complaining about. No demerit marks for these issues.

I wish HBO would release this series because it's the funniest show I've seen in years. Which is odd considering it's now 2005 and his show ended in 2000, but I digress.

One tiny disclaimer, there is some profanity involved (after all, this show was on cable, where free speech can generally be exercised unless you're a news network, but I digress...), but it's not overly done and often it's intelligently written in. So even if those naughty words are normally a turn-off, at least Netflix it - either way, you WON'T be disappointed!

I Am 11-Years Old, and Proud To Say I Love S.N.L.'s Chris Rock, his 4 Years on The Show Provide laughter, Comedy and Music: Especially, The Biggest Sketches of Him: Chris Rock's Guide To Surviving The Apollo (If You Are White), Nat X, and 2-Live Crew's Luther Campbell, Chris Rock was The 90's Eddie Murphy, and Eddie Murphy even Discovered him in 1987, and got him a Place in The 1990-1991' Season of The Show. I Love Chris Rock, and He Makes Spoofs off of Everybody and was a Popular and the Still on The Track (never a hasbeen), Comedian.

Great Commentaries, The Rest is "Blah!".......2005-07-09

First off, Chris Rock is funny. Really funny! I haven't seen him on SNL (I lost interest in that show a long time ago) but I was really looking forward to this DVD.

The best parts is when Chris Rock is NOT doing comedy sketches. The comedy was not funny at all. The only parts worth laughing at were lines not spoken by Chris Rock. If this was the best Chris Rock did on SNL then I'd had to see what didn't make the cut.

But what was funny was his social commentaries and correspondent reports. Chris Rock is the master at commenting on what is wrong with what goes on in this country.

If you rent or buy this then expect to not be entertained through most of the show. But the rare funny moments are worth hanging out for.

That Guy Just Doesn't Understand!.......2005-05-23

I'm writing this review in response to another reviewer (so far there is only one so HI!).

THIS GUYS HAS NO IDEA ABOUT WHAT THE HELL HE IS TALKING ABOUT!
First off, Chris Rock is funny. Anybody who's seen and actually paid attention to his standup and sketches should know that. Which is probably why he managed to make it to #5 on Comedy Central's "100 Greatest Standups of All-Time". His social commentaries and life stories are hilarious. Period.

Now, for the juicy "your a dumb@$$ part!" The way you said Chris Rock wasn't funny at the Oscars, Dude! Is this Sean Penn I'm talking to?!? If so I'd just like to say SPICOLI!

When you said that SNL will never topple MADtv and In Living Color's minority humor, SNL is the godfather of minority humor, starting a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away with a little Richard Pryor & Chevy Chase sketch in which they threw racial slang terms at each other.

Eddie Murphy is annoying? I find that very weird to say considering you praised Aries Spears, who spends more than half of the time given to him on MADtv doing impressions of Eddie Murphy doing impressions. Watch any episode and it's always there!

And that's just the cream of the crop! Plus, as you can tell, they just keep comin'! By the way, Jennifer Lopez only danced.

Comedian Chris Rock spent several seasons on Saturday Night Live, and this compilation tape of his best moments showcases his considerable talents while unintentionally highlighting how uneven the show itself is. Even in a video selected to showcase Rock alone, he is all too often mired as the second or third banana in an SNL skit. But there are, thankfully, plenty of opportunities in this video for Rock to shine without being upstaged by other performers or left adrift by limp writing. When he appears behind the "Weekend Update" desk to deliver an editorial commentary or a news report, Rock put his considerable skills as a comedian to perfect use. And in the skits where the focus is on him, he proves himself to be adept at characterizations, such as when he dons a colossal Afro wig to become radical talk show host Nat X, host of "The Dark Side." One peculiar surprise about the video: some of the language in "Def Jam" parodies that was bleeped out for the broadcast of SNL is here presented uncensored, so while this is Chris Rock delivering perhaps his cleanest material, a few choice words are nonetheless delivered loud and clear. --Robert J. Not as good as his stand-up.......2005-11-20

Saturday Night Live is a GOLD MINE of comic material. What a great American institution. There must be hundreds of hours of classic comedy footage of great comedians on the show.
Why then do the selectors of these 'Best Of' DVDs seem so sloppy and careless when it comes to choosing sketches? This DVD is a good example. Most of the material here is very average, even though much funnier Chris Rock SNL material was recorded. Apparently Chris Rock starred in more sketches that were a lot funnier than these, but they don't appear on the DVD. Instead we get a badly chosen selection that doesn't present Rock's best work on the show.
The best bits of the DVD are the parts that closely resemble Rock's best medium - Stand Up. There are his introductions from when he hosted the show where he uses material from his Bigger & Blacker tour - but because this was on SNL the material is watered down and lacks the PUNCH of his proper live shows.
Rock is at his best doing very honest, raw stand-up, so unless you are a die hard fan of his SNL contributions and you don't mind dissapointment, I'd give this a miss.
Go for his stand-up comedy DVDs instead.

Average At Best.......2005-03-27

Even though he was a cast member on "Saturday Night Live" for only three years, Chris Rock gave the show enough great moments to give him a comprehensive collection of his best material. Wrong.

Like "The Best Of Tracy Morgan", this dvd basically focuses on Rock's most famous characters (he only had 5). And like that other best - off, the producers opt for any random sketch featuring these charcters, which means that the Nat X and "I'm Chillin'" sketches are not the funniest ones he ever did. In fact, both of them are from when he hosted, which means they are nowhere near as good as when he was a castmember. (They also don't icnlude the two very funny charcters Chris Farley played in these bits). The funniest sketches on the dvd, "The Bensonhurst Dating Game" and "The Sinatra Group" are hilarious but don't feature Rock in a starring role. In the first one, Rock plays the straight man while being the butt of racial jokes made by Joe Pesci, Adam Sandler and Dana Carvey. And in "The Sinatra Group", Phil Hartman is the star while Rock sits silent except for a few seconds. The only true standout sketches are the "Update" commentaries. They are hilarious.

What makes this dvd all the more disappointing is that a lot of stuff is missing from the dvd. Where is his Michael Jackson and Arsenio Hall impressions? Where's Buster Jenkins? The bonus bits are much funnier than a lot of the sketches on the dvd, especially the Nat X bit.

A very disappointing look back at Rock's work. Hopefully he will get a much better volume two of his best work.

Could've Been Better.......2004-07-12

As one of "Saturday Night Live's"most famous comedians, Chris Rock created a long line of classic characters and impressions in his 3 years on the show. But many of them are missing. A few recurring sketches are here, but they are from when he hosted the show.

A lot of this dvd's best sketches have Rock as a second and even third banana. For instnace, in the "Sinatra Group" sketch (this one's my favorite), his role as 2 Live Crew star is sadly limited, as Phil Hartman shines as Frank Sinatra (though to be fair, Sinatra is supposed to be the main focus). The other Luther Campbell sketch is funny, with Phil Hartman, Mike Myers and Jan Hooks, Dana Carvey and that "Twi Peaks" guy throwing song ideas at him left and right, much to his dismay. Another thing is that even when Rock is the main focus, another character outshines him. For instance, in "The Bensonhurts Dating Game", Rock's the main focus, but Joe Pesci gets the best lines. A sad waste of talent.

The extras are better. There's another one of his hiarious "Weekend Update" commentaries, plus a better "Nat X" sketch that is from 1990, back when the show was in its prime. This is proabably the least enjoyable "SNL" dvd ever. Chris Rock is another player who deserves a volume 2.

Good, But My Least Favorite "SNL" DVD.......2004-02-29

Chris Rock was one of the freshest, rawest comedians in "Saturday Night Live" history. Skits like "The Dark Side With Nat X", "2 Live Crew", "The Proud Pattersons" and his monologues showcase his unique flair for "urban humor". This dvd tries its best to include Rock's best moments, but unfortuneately, it caught in the muck and myer along the way.

There are about one or two things wrong with this dvd that do not make it live up to the superior retrospectives put together for Dana Carvey, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, and Adam Sandler. First up, skits like "I'm Chillin'" and "Big Toe Song" are rather pointless (the latter disgusting) and forgettable. Second, some of the best skits feature Rock as a second banana rather than the main focus. These happen to include my two favorite sketches, "The Bensonhurst Dating Game" and "The Sinatra Group". In the former, he is bested by host Joe Pesci and fellow "SNL" heavyweights Adam Sandler and Dana Carvey. In the latter, he plays Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew in a debate group led by Frank Sinatra, played by the superb Phil Hartman.

Overall, not too bad a dvd, but it could've been so much more.

Woohoo! This is too funny! I have allways loved SNL, but this is in the tie of the third funniest SNL videos(and there's a bunch of SNL videos!). There are many memorable lines like "You bickering, name calling caller item putting awayer." or "Bite me, bite me hard. Lick my blood."(that wasn't said by Chris but it's funny. OR one of the funniest of the Chris Rock sayings "You don't think there's a @#$&$! rabbit in this hat?! See there is a @#$&$! rabbit in this hat!". Also "My turkey needs no salt!" and the hilarious stand up from the comedian himself! The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because sometimes it gets too gross when it doesn't have to be.
