If you've ever felt alienated by the world around you, Ghost World will offer laughter, tears, and reassurance that you are definitely not alone. Adapted by Daniel Clowes and Crumb director Terry Zwigoff from Clowes's acclaimed graphic novel, the movie spends summer vacation with high school graduates Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlet Johansson). They inflict little tortures on the denizens of urban sprawl, wielding scathing irony as a defense against a "ghost world" full of pop-cultural lemmings and uncertain futures. But when Enid picks a 40-ish vintage-record collector (Steve Buscemi) as the target of her latest cruel prank, she finds herself unexpectedly attracted to him ("he's the opposite of everything I completely hate") and is forced to confront her own crushing loneliness. This combination of deadpan sarcasm and deeply compassionate humanity makes Ghost World a rare and delicate comedy, with an ambiguous ending that suggests tragedy or hope, depending on your own point of view. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Thora Birch (American Beauty) and Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation) "sneak into your heart and stay there" (Rolling Stone) in this "eerie, masterful movie" (Movieline) from the acclaimed director of Crumb. Co-starring Brad Renfro (Deuces Wild), Illeana Douglas (Stir of Echos) and Steve Buscemi (Fargo) in "the best role of his career" (Movieline), Ghost World is a "smartly strange comedy [that] stands out like the Taj Mahal" (Time)! While their classmates head for college, Enid (Birch) and Rebecca (Johansson) focus their energies on tormenting those around them - from a goofy convenience store clerk (Renfro) to an eccentric art teacher (Douglas). But when they zero in on an oddball loner (Buscemi) looking for Miss Right, their seemingly innocent meddling threatens to shatter one of their hearts not to mention their lifelong friendship.

4 out of 5 stars Good Teen Tale.......2007-06-23

This film is a teen tale with some substance as well as humor. When Enid graduates from high school she's slow to grasp the realities necessary to cope in the adult world. Reluctant to get a job, her best friend starts to distance herself from Enid since she rebels against maturity. Enid reaches the height of her selfishness when she plays with the emotions of an older man who is a social misfit trying to find love and acceptance in the world. Young Enid learns a bold lesson in cruelty when her actions snowball, causing hurt to herself and others. There are funny and memorable characters.

5 out of 5 stars a great touching funny movie.......2007-05-18

i was hiking at griffith park in los angeles and when i got home this was playing on showtime. i loved it. first of all thora and scarlett are really hot. being as i collect stuff too i related with steve buscemi character who is a very talented funny actor. i think enid is hotter than scarlett but they are both at their peak here. the whole tone of the movie was very funny to me. the ending was cool, some say she killed herself but i just think she went to a strange place to start a new life like she wanted to. a personal fav.

5 out of 5 stars No ghosts, but funny in a sweet and melancholy way.......2007-05-11

The phone rings. Enid says, "Aren't you going to answer that?"

Seymour says, "I have no desire to talk to anyone who wants to talk to me."

He picks it up anyway and listens and then says, "That's my mother."

I just about cracked up.

Well, the whole movie cracked me up. It's a work of art from indie auteur Terry Zwigoff whom I recall as the director of the edgy documentary Crumb (1994). For some reason, as I was watching this, I thought it was directed by Todd Solondz who directed the amazingly real and funny Welcome to the Doll House (1995). I imagined this as a kind of high school/out of high school progression from the junior high school of Welcome to the Doll House. It could be, actually, with Thora Birch playing an older Dawn Weiner and having all those bad things happen to her, but still managing to survive it all. Both Enid Coleslaw and Dawn Weiner are amazingly true to life and also amazingly talented and unappreciated outsiders in this arbitrary and capricious world. Birch (whom I remember vividly from American Beauty 1999) in her glasses and all those campish outfits over her rather ample figure was just outstanding.

Scarlett Johansson who plays her friend Rebecca was as vivid as my high school date on prom night and actually prettier (I have to admit). She was also outstanding. Both Johansson and Birch are charismatic in a way that will glue your eyes to the screen. They play ultra cynical slackers who love to satirize the world and their fellow creatures as they hide their vulnerability from themselves. They are so cute.

Steve Buscemi plays Seymour, a kind of autobiographical alter ego of cartoonist Daniel Clowes (thus Enid's last name, "Coleslaw") who wrote the comic from which he and Zwigoff adapted the movie. Buscemi manages a tricky part calling for old school dorkishness, vulnerability and self-consciousness portrayed in an ultimately winning and sympathetic way.

There are a lot of amusing insider "trivia" comments about this movie at IMDb, including the fact that Sophie Crumb, daughter of Robert Crumb, did the drawings in Enid's notebook. One of the most amusing is this: "The actor who plays the high school principal in the graduation scene also plays one of the customers in the porno shop. This was not intentional--Terry Zwigoff cast him as a porno shop customer forgetting that he also played the principal."

Right.

See this for Zwigoff who has the eye and the ear of a genius, a man who knows the hearts of his characters and the mass culture they live in, and how to satirize them both, but gently with affection.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Films of All Time.......2007-05-08

I've loved this movie since it came out in theaters. With an amazing cast of cult and mainstream stars, you cannot go wrong. Steve Buscemi and Thora Birch shine as the main characters, Seymour and Enid, while Scarlett Johannsen is great as Enid's motivated friend and foil, Rebecca.

I love the comic, and this movie is a nice complement to it. Even if you're not familiar with the comic, this movie will make you take a look at life, school and the BS that pervades all aspects of society.

Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars depressing.......2007-04-01

I generally like movies that portray people on a search for meaning and bleonging, such as About Schmidt and The Royal Tenenbaums. This movie followed a young woman on such a journey, and while there was some good humor along the way, it became very dark and depressing in the second half. Unlike the protagonists in the other movies I mentioned, the main character was very self-centered and thought that a meaningful life would just happen. She hurts people around her repeatedly and causes herself a lot of pain. I can see where someone might like this movie who's into the whole life-is-meaningless thing, but I could have passed it up.

This 1988 OVA reunited author Hideyuki Kikuchi and director Yoshiaki Kawajiri of Wicked City (1987). Ten years after his father Genichirou was killed battling the evil Rebi Ra, teen-aged Kyoya Izayoi is called to stop Rebi from releasing demons from hell onto the Earth. Demon City borrows heavily from Star Wars: Ag'ni Rai, Genichirou's teacher, tells Kyoya that he must learn to harness the web of spiritual energy that flows among living things. This minimal training, plus his father's sword and the love of beautiful Sayaka enable Kyoya to destroy Rebi Ra. The film is oddly paced, with a long build-up to a disappointing climax, problems that are exacerbated by the very stiff vocal performances. Kawajiri uses color with his accustomed skill, especially in the monochromatic opening duel, but Demon City hardly ranks among his important works. (Unrated: suitable for ages 16 and older: violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, brief nudity) --Charles Solomon

Description

In a city beset by demons, Kyoya must avenge his father, a great warrior who died at the hands of a diabolical psychic. Kyoya must discover his latent powers and finish the battle his father started, before humanity is destroyed forever.

4 out of 5 stars It was pretty good to me.......2007-06-03

Demon City Shinjuku is far away from a classic and nowhere near unwatchable. The animation shouldn't be compared to todays anime. For the time it was made I say the animation is pretty good. The character development is good and the story is straight forward. I'll speak on it without adding to many spoilers.

A pretty powerful man with demonic powers wants to bring demons to earth and plunge the world into total darkness. The main character is summoned by a spectre to fight this threat. Along the way he encounters several characters who actually add to the story. The battles with the demons are pretty good and the character designs aren't bad at all.

This anime isn't for kids due to the very strong language. If you have some spare cash this is worth a watch for the cheap price. I dont mind this film in my collection one bit.

3 out of 5 stars it's just ok.......2007-04-30

i watched it, kinda liked it, and kinda didn't. the story is a lil herky-jerky in places. but the art/animation is cool, dark and spooky, music was ok, voice actors did an ok job. if a buddy has a copy borrow it, if you see it at your rental place give it a try, find it used/cheap... go ahead. but i'd reccomend you save your new price $$$ for something else.

3 out of 5 stars More "F" Bombs you can shake a stick at.......2007-03-02

I bought this movie thinking that it could have been a PG-13 Rated Urotsukidoji (Legend of the overfiend), which is to many otaku as the trailblazer to horror hentai such as La Blue Girl and Cool Devices...

Animation is exactly what I expected. From the Mid 80's, on par with Galaxy 999 and if your expecting quality animation, this is not it.

The dubbing is by part the worst dubbing I have ever heard (next to the Magic Knight Rayearth theme songs). These characters say the "F" word like 16 times, most of the time gratuitously. I was expecting so much more out of the plot, but it let me down.

This is truly the movie the never could - Put this on your rental list above "Crying Freeman" or any of those horrid MD Geist movies.

5 out of 5 stars one of my first anime.......2007-01-04

its a very classic anime. horrible English dub, don't even waste your time with it, just go straight to the sub version. lots of violence towards anime, so be ready for that. it has some of the anime cliche's woven into it so be ready for those. some characters are under developed, but, still an anime i would recommend; but that might just be because it was one of my introductions to anime. but it is a great example of a raw classic anime.

5 out of 5 stars A classic anime film.......2006-07-04

In exchange for the power to slay his fellow student and rival, Rebi Rah agreed to open a doorway into the demon world.

Years later, the time has come for him to honor his end of the deal. Knowing that his old teacher, Rai, could possibly stop him, he places a spell on the peaceful Federation President; without Master Rai's constant aid, the president will die.

Since he cannot leave the president, Rai asks for Kyoya, the son of Rebi Rah's dead rival, to do so. And with the urging of Sayaka, the president's cute and pure-hearted daughter, Kyoya agrees.

But Kyoya only has rudimentary knowledge of his father's fighting skills. To get to Rah, he must fight his way through the monster-infested streets of Shinjuku, protecting Sayaka along the way. The odds say he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell...

About the only way I could see this movie getting any better is if it was longer.

The bestselling stories of a boy wizard have left millions spellbound. Discovering the truth behind the fiction, British actor Hugh Laurie narrates this public television documentary (not authorized by J.K. Rowling) to provide historical and scientific context to the Harry Potter tales. Divided into six chapters, the 74-minute program offers footage of Rowling's childhood home and platform nine and three-quarters at King's Cross Station in London; notable discussions with authors Lindsey Fraser (Conversations with J.K. Rowling) and David Colbert (The Magical Worlds of Harry Potter); and clips of television interviews with Rowling. One chapter unearths some probable legends that may have stirred Rowling's imagination. Another guesses on a Scottish school that may have provided the inspiration for Hogwarts. Especially fun for Potter fans is a description of the now-famous Hogwarts' sport, Quidditch. In true documentary form, style outperforms sizzle, which more likely will appeal to older Potter fans, ages 12 and up. Beautifully filmed and scripted, here is an intriguing complement to the Harry Potter books and motion pictures. --Lynn Gibson

I did like this DVD but do wish it had been close-captioned. Sometimes the Brits are hard to understand, especially when one has hearing problems, even with hearing aids!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Companion Piece to Harry Potter Phenomenia.......2004-12-15

Most fans of Harry Potter (books or films) will enjoy this documentary. I believe I saw it either on PBS or on a discovery channel type TV channel. While it suggests that it will uncover how Harry Potter exists in the real world, it actually covers related topics quite well for children and family viewing. You learn more about related topics, but always from a springboard of discussing Harry Potter's settings, people, objects or practices.
As mentioned, the narration is very good and the program is quite entertaining. However, one should not be expecting to see any clips from the HP movies here, nor is this a Harry Potter tale. This is an exploration of the subject matter that Harry Potter's world is drawn from.
Still, it's great fun for HP fans and families, and I wouldn't hesitate to order one up. Just realize that it isn't one of the movies. (See other reviews above, as they are all quite accurate!) PS: I watched the whole thing LIVE on tv and tapped it on an old VHS...tried to get my two HP fan kids to watch it, but they didn't get into it as much as I thought they might. "It's OK Dad, but can we go out and play now?" "Why did you make us watch that DAD?" Guess it can't be all bad if they want to go play instead of sit glued to the TV all day, eh?

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-11-28

This is, as advertized, a PBS special about the possible origins of some of the "Harry Potter" mythology. The production values are on a par with that kind of show - a bit interesting.
What I found so very disappointing was the fact that ALL of the "Special Features" were nothing more than the original show cut differently with an extra 30+ seconds of new material thrown in here and there (perhaps a whole 10 minutes more in total?) The extra material looked like deleted scenes from the original.
I would not have purchased this DVD had I known that.

The History Channel has always put out some great programs and i think this one was truly the most interesting and informative out of them all on holidays in the USA. Even though, they dont show this very often on History Channel (or any other "Haunted History"), its very rare that you will see it, maybe every now and then, but, not all the time as most reviewers would suggest..just so you know. I would buy this, not just for the information of the History, but, for the rare viewing that it gets. Highly Recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Short but Informative History of Halloween.......2005-09-20

Like Christmas Unwrapped, this A&E special, which pops up every year around Halloween, is hosted by Harry Smith. It tells the history of Christmas dating from the time of the Druidic festival of Samhain right up to the 20th century. Along the way noted scholars and authors are interviewed as the roots of Halloween are traced over the centuries. Clips from horror films such as Halloween are included. Also discussed is Mexico's Day of the Dead holiday and various cities are visited to explore their Halloween traditions and festivities. It's a bit of a fluffy pieces but it's all good fun and I still enjoy watching it each Halloween season.

5 out of 5 stars Sober documentary.......2006-02-13

Caution: Do not confuse with the Sci-Fi Channel's series of the same name!

No theatrics here, just sober investigations into several purported hauntings. This is not a "balanced" documentary: The emphasis is on evidence in favor of the proposition that these hauntings are real. The film features extensive witness monologues instead of sound bites intercut with special effects and spooky music, as is too often the case in this genre. Some, including at least one reviewer here, may find this approach dull. I found it informative and serious. Usually I find shows like this funny or embarassing.

5 out of 5 stars I've got to say it's good. I'm in it!.......2005-01-26

We shot this series back in the UK in 1997 and it was the first of a whole host of "Paranormal" programmes on TV. It came long before "Most Haunted" and the like, and was the Discovery Channel's biggest programme in the UK with over 4 million viewers.

All the stories were so well researched, I believe it is still one of the most honest ghost documentary series ever produced.

My main appearance was in The Phantom Schoolmaster (Disc 1), and that one episode took almost 4 days to shoot which is something not heard of nowadays! The research was real and the stories came from reliable witnesses.

But I could be biased! Have a look for yourself. If you don't like it then you can sell it on an auction site!

After all, there must be something in it. Discovery are still re-running it in the UK after 8 years!

Cheers!

All four "Ghosthunter" DVDs are well worth your money and time.
It is true that the episodes are all based in Britain, and that's just fine. England is the ghost capitol of the world!
All episodes are well written and very well done. There is a good bit of English history thrown in of course, because you need to understand the haunted area in order to appreciate the haunting itself.Do yourself a favor, if you are a ghost buff, and buy these DVDs. You won't regret it!

Description

After six month at sea on a solo trip around the world, Georgia Perry's 44-foot sail boat sits idle with no wind in her sails for several days. Cabin fever sets in and the border between fact and fantasy begins to trickle away. Are uninvited visitors bordering the vessel, or is her mind deceiving her? But if these are just tricks in her imagination, how do these ghostly encounters leave Georgia with bruises? If the visitors are real, is there a bigger danger…?

5 out of 5 stars A Little Beauty.......2007-02-15

I have to admit, this movie really gave me the Creepy-Crawly's! The fine line between reality & fantasy comes across quite well, in this spooky little thriller.
If you like tales about cats, sailing the high seas, ghosts, a bit of romance; and in the end the heroine prevails(good on her!)it's worth a squizz! There's some good special effects too - very entertaining!

3 out of 5 stars The Visitors Imaginery Friends.......2007-02-12

This movie is eerie style, which almost fits an illusionary profile of psychology-thriller. The movie is confusing at the start, and continues to make the watcher feel confused throughout the movie, yet as the scenes come together, it seems more real and plotted well. If you want a movie that peeks curiosity, then this movie will definately peek your mind to want to see what happens...Some compare the movie to "ghost ship," yet I cannot see the comparison entirely at this point.

4 out of 5 stars Not a Horror Film..........2006-05-21

...per se. This should appeal more to fans of drama/suspense.

If you're like me and enjoy indulging in films that watch like paperback novels, then this should do it for you. The DVD cover is a bit misleading-- this is about a strong-willed, stubborn woman who decides to sail around the world with no human contact save via radio.

During the trip, cabin fever sets in and she confronts her past and fears through ghostly visitors which include her parents and some pirates.

This picture provides the viewer with some great drama, interesting characters, and an overall satisfying cinematic experience. If it was meant to be scary, it failed (except for the chick's mom-- she was freaky), but shines as a psychological drama.

Check it out if it sounds like your thing.

Visitors (Richard Franklin, 2003)

This movie is getting no love at IMDB, and I'm not terribly sure why. Perhaps the raters over there are used to more highbrow fare; I watched this the week after watching Ghost Ship, and comparison between the two seems unavoidable. In every way, Visitors comes out on top.

During a round-the-world solo sailing race, Georgia Perry (Pitch Black's Radha Mitchell) runs into a calm patch (we eventually find out she's just a few days from the end of the race at this time, so she's already been at sea for roughly six months with only a cat for company). While stuck in the doldrums, Perry has to fight off a bout of isolation-induced insanity where she hallucinates visitations from important people in her life-- her dead mother (Susannah York), her ailing father (Prisoners of the Sun's Ray Barrett), and various others, while having to worry about running across a pirated tanker, and having her only contact with other humans come from radio contact with her fiancee Luke (Blade: Trinity's Dominic Purcell) and Rob (Christopher Kirby, recently seen in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith), the radioman on a freighter who are coincidentally on the same course.

Radha Mitchell is not only drop-dead gorgeous, but is one of those exceptionally talented and yet underrated actors who never seen to get nearly enough work (while Julia Roberts, at twenty million a flick, is working more than ever). It is her performance that truly carries this picture, though many of the minor cast also turn in reasonable performances (Purcell, especially, is appropriately slimy, and Susannah York delivers the kind of role that explains why she was so in demand in the seventies). The film's climax begs comparison with that of Ghost Ship, and while it's cheesy, in comparison it's wildly understated; the denouement is a tad on the "girl-power!" side, but is still thoroughly fitting.

A fun way to kill ninety minutes, and well worth it for a glimpse of Radha Mitchell's charms. *** ½

2 out of 5 stars UNWELCOME GUESTS.......2005-01-31

Psychobabble is the main ingredient of this "psychological chiller" from down under. Radha Mitchell (Pitch Black)plays a daring young lass who sets out to sail around the world and finds herself out of commission when the wind decides to take a vacation. Meanwhile, after spending so much time alone on the vessel, she's starting to have what could either be hallucinations or visitations from various sources: her mother who committed suicide; her father who dies while she's on the journey; pirates; a pirate she killed who keeps coming back; three ladies who are also dead; and she talks to her cat whom we hear talk back. Director Richard Franklin never focuses on the reality or unreality of these visitors, and one is left digging through immense amounts of Mitchell's guilt over her father's accident which not only paralyzed him but also made him impotent; over her emotionally blackmailing mama who slit her wrists in a convalescent home; her guilt over having an affair with an Indonesian hunk; and of course, the movie's sole purpose seems to be to have Mitchell extricate herself from these guilts. While there are some effectively creepy scenes, VISITORS fails on either being a tense psychothriller or a lukewarm horror thriller. No commitment from the writer or director leaves Mitchell in deep water, despite her competent performance. Susannah York is delightfully campy as the mom; Ray Barrett appropriately paternal as her pop; and Domenic Purcell as her lover and partner, Luke, could use some vitamins to energize his understated performance.
Artsy to the point of irritation, VISITORS doesn't chill, thrill or entertain.
