In the mid-1980s, standup comic Rodney Dangerfield underwent a renewed wave of popularity, finding a surprisingly enthusiastic baby-boomer audience. What else to do but make a movie that shows off Dangerfield's alternately knowing and boorish humor? This may not be on the AFI list of great films, but it delivers laughs aplenty in its story of a rough-edged tycoon who made his fortune in clothes for the stout and tall and decides to attend college in order to be closer to his son (Keith Gordon). There's not much plot, but lots of room for Dangerfield's one-line riffs. The goggle-eyed comic veteran displays surprising charm, enough to make his romance with professor Sally Kellerman believable. Look for cameos by late comedian Sam Kinison and author Kurt Vonnegut Jr. --Marshall Fine

4 out of 5 stars Classic Rodney.......2007-05-21

Worth the purchase price if only for Sam Kennison's scene as the American History professor "discussing" Vietnam. Rodney's son in the movie, what a dork. Could have used a different actor, but overlook him and just enjoy everyone else.

3 out of 5 stars NEEDS A DELUXE TREATMENT! CLASSIC COMEDY.......2007-03-13

Another Rodney Dangerfield classic that has not received the deluxe treatment it deserves on DVD! This is still a must have!

4 out of 5 stars Love Dangerfield.......2007-02-24

Hey if you love Rodney Dangerfield's brand of humour you will lap this up. it is never going to win awards or be the subject of any deep film study or discussion but if you looking for a relaxing, funny, non-taxing evening, then you can't go wrong with this.

5 out of 5 stars I hereby dedicate this review to...Myself!!!.......2007-02-01

Having recently turned 34, I decided to go back to college. These last few weeks have brought back memories such as standing in long lines, worrying about financial aid, exorbitant book store prices, finding my way around campus, entrance exams (which can be quite challenging if your math is rusty like mine), and trying to find classes that best suit my work schedule. All of this has to happen before the first minute is actually spent in class. Being an older than average college student prompted me to write a review on this comedy classic about a college freshman much older than myself.

The sorely missed Rodney Dangerfield plays Thornton Melon in perhaps his greatest performance ever. Melon is a wealthy self-made sixty year-old entreprenuer whose massive retail chain specializes in clothes for large men. What Melon lacks in formal education, he makes up for by being hard-working and having a solid business know-how that is not taught in the economics classes. Two things happen that bring his life to a crossroads. First of all, he catches his no-good wife (played with perfect bitchiness by Adrianne Barbeau) making time and a half with another man. Secondly, his awkward, unhappy son Jason (played by Keith Gordon) calls him to say he wants to drop out of college. So, what's a rich over the hill fatcat to do? Enroll at his son's college, what else?

Thornton initially has a good thing going at school with partying, cutting up in class, and lots of beautiful female students. His wealth and fun-loving personality make him a hit with most of the other students. He doesn't just throw parties; he IS the party. His popularity even begins to rub off on Jason - which is a mixed blessing since he wants to succeed at school on his own merits. But soon his partying and the fact that he has paid consultants to do his homework illegally begin to catch up with him.

As I mentioned earlier in the review, Rodney was at the top of his game here. He was cleary having a good time making the movie, and that good time works its way to the viewer. The supporting cast is also excellent. Paxton Whitehead is perfect as an aloof Economics professor who serves as Thornton's diametrically opposed antagonist. Robert Downey Jr, an actor who normally annoys me to end, is hilarious as Jason's punked-out diver-heckling best friend. The late Sam Kinison is especially memorable as a psychotic History professor/Vietnam veteran. You even have a cameo by Kurt Vonnegut Jr (yes, the same Kurt Vonnegut Jr who wrote _Slaughterhouse Five_). Back to School is a textbook (bad choice of words) example of how great comedy films used to be before the comedy genre became hijacked by disgustingly unfunny toilet humor mavens like Rob Schneider and bland rom-com chick flicks.

Not only is Back to School great for those times when you just need a good belly laugh, it also has a great message about the importance of both having to work hard and also having a good time. Thornton was having a hard time with college because he partied too much. Jason, on the other hand, was unhappy because he worked too hard and didn't take time to smell the roses. Both of them needed to find a balance. Everyone going to school (college, high school, etc.) should take that lesson to heart. I certainly intend to.

These 2 films (aside from "Caddyshack") are Rodney Dangerfield at the top of his game. What a great idea to put them both on one disc. I have both films on separate DVDs, but would gladly trade 'em in for this space-saving combo package.
Ol' Rodney may be gone, and he didn't win any Oscars for his comic performances, but one thing's for sure: he kept me laughing from start to finish!
Long live Dangerfield!

Two successful business men. From entirely different approaches they have made themselves successful. Interestingly, their values, and business ethics are similar. Their concern for the future has melded them into a common crusade to make the world a little better. There is a bigger difference between the fresh new college students who ask questions of these successful men, than between the two men.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another Winning Franklin Story.......2003-08-22

Those that have missed their favorite animated turtle would do well to check out this brand-new story. The plot may sound generic at first, but the story itself is extremely well-written and even makes some nice references to past "Franklin" stories. Everything that's likeable about the series is here and there are a couple of neat surprises as well. There's only one musical number, but it's a catchy one and well worth listening to. The story will easily hold viewers' attention and there's also a supblot that's just as enjoyable as the main story. Some of the characters have different voices, but such an excellent job of casting was done that these differences are barely noticeable, if at all.

For even more fun, check out the DVD special features. Nice bonuses include a read-along of an entire "Franklin" story by author Paulette Bourgeois, descriptions of several of the characters with narration and a trivia game. There are also several games available for those who have a DVD-ROM drive.

4 out of 5 stars A real gem, see this movie.......2006-07-17

"Going to School With Dad on My Back" seems to be a relatively little known film outside of China. This is quite unfortunate and hopefully will change, as this is a very good movie, making the list of my favorite 20 films on Chinese culture.

Based on a true story, this very good film accurately portrays the difficulties many children from poor families in rural areas in China have to complete a meaningful education. Most Americans do not realize that so-called public schools in China, both in urban and rural areas, are not really free. Parents need to pay fees for their children to go to school. Many poor parents, as is shown in this movie, do not have enough income for their child or all of their children to go to school. Contrary to popular belief outside of China, in many villages parents are allowed to have more than one child.

In "Going to School with Dad on My Back," the father of a poor family can only and just barely afford for one of his two children, his son or his daughter to go to school. As shown in the beginning of the film, the son is chosen by sheer chance to go to school during that school year. Even getting to school is potentially dangerous, as he has to cross a river to get there. He eventually becomes successful in school, but almost has to quit his schooling because of the continued burden of having to pay fees to attend a public school. This is a burden actually faced by millions of poor families in China.

I highly recommend "Going to School With Dad on My Back." American students have it so easy by comparison with the Chinese students portrayed in this very good, realistic film. This film, in my opinion, deserves 4 and a half stars.

      4 out of 5 stars A young boy's quest for education.......2006-02-22

Going to school with Dad on My Back is a sheer delight. Unlike recent imported Chinese films that feature kung fu or action fights (Jet Li comes to mind), this gem tells the story of a young boy's life in a poor village in rural China.
Unable to afford to send both his children to school (because in China, school is not free), a widowed father spins a water urn and the handle points to his 7 year old son Shiwa instead of his older sister. He wins the opportunity for education merely by a game of chance. Shiwa then goes off to school and his sister stays behind, toiling in the fields.
Shiwa is reluntant to go to school at first, after witnessing the drowning of a classmate while crossing a river, but his father presses him on.Years go by and he excells. He wins the national chemistry competition when he is in middle school, and is accepted to the university. By this time, his father grows ill and he must make a decision on whether to go off to school or stay and care for his father, since his sister has married and lives in another village.
What strikes me about the film, besides its visual beauty, is the warm, caring relationship that Shiwa has with his older sister. In American films, the brothers and sisters often are shown as rivals, insulting each other, and being disrepectful to each other and their parents. In foreign films, the relationships are portrayed in a more mature fashion, as in the case of this film.
Although is older sister wasn't lucky in the spin of the urn and thus could not continue going to school, she supports and really loves her little brother and tries to help him succeed in any way possible. She even gets married by arrangement to a richer family so that her father has money to pay the tution of her little brother. He loves her in return, and mentions her in his speech after winning the chemistry award to the village.
I also was moved by the families in the village who live in poverty, but try desperately to give their children an education, by scraping enough money together to pay the teachers to teach their children in hope of a better life. In the USA, we have free universal education, and so many parents and children do not take advantage of it. In fact, the lowest income children in our schools do the worst academically in many districts, whereas children of poor immigrants from Asia leap at the chance in this country to better educate themselves and to move out of poverty. This film shows just how much education means to not just the peasant farmer of Shiwa, but in fact the whole village, who come together to celebrate his educational achievements.
This film is based on a true story which makes the whole viewing experience that more meaningful.

4 out of 5 stars "I give this mobile phone to you. Do call me.".......2007-03-27

Stephen Chow stars as a police officer who goes undercover at the Edinburg College to recover the Chief Inspector's gun. While the story may not seem like the greatest, Chow's brilliant comedy is on full dispay and the movie is very well directed by Gordan Chan. After seeing this, I can't think of a better story than Stephen Chow being in school acting as an 18 year old. It works better than you could ever imagine, mainly because this isn't you typical Wong Jing type of movie, though he did help to write the script and also produced the movie. The great acting and directing combined with the comedy is what makes this so great. Not just for fans of Hong Kong Cinema, it's for anyone who likes to laugh. I fell out of my chair a few times. Chow is never really looking for the gun so the plot kind of drags, but it's still a lot of fun, and the story comes together by the end.

I could have used more action. and that is the only thing I was disappointed in. The fights come in spurts about 30 seconds long and are fast and furious, just not long enough.

Fight Back to School part 2 is an even better movie, but part 1 is a classic as well.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Stephen Chow movies.......2007-01-22

Although it lacks the polish and CGI of his latest efforts, "Shaolin Soccer" and "Kung Fu Hustle," this movie was still hugely entertaining, especially if you like Chow's "moleitau" (nonsense humor).

Chow plays Star Chow, a cop who goes undercover as a student in order to find a missing gun. He is understandably annoyed, shouting at his senior, "I wanted to be a cop so I didn't have to go to school anymore!" He gets to display a huge range of hilarious, pissed-off expressions. Plot is thin, but who cares: this movie is, after all, just a stage for Chow to show off his impeccable comic timing, slapstick, and nonsense humor. The familiar supporting cast is also strong.

Chow has to deal with a myriad of things as an undercover at school: professors that throw chalkboard erasers at him, student gangs and cliques, homework, tests, girls, etc. This is great comic material and Chow rises to the occasion admirably. There's a hilarious scene where he cheats on his Chinese history test by calling up the police station and asking the chief to give him the answers.

This movie is not as accessible to Western audiences as Chow's latest movies "Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle." It is still a very funny movie with lots of slapstick, but a lot of it is verbal comedy. It's a lot funnier if you understand Cantonese because a lot of the comedy comes from Cantonese slang and Chow's intonation. However, I've shown this movie to friends who don't understand Cantonese at all and they have all loved it.

Bottom line: One of Chow's best. This movie is a good example of why audiences love Chow and why he was one of the biggest HK box-office draws in the 90s (he still is a big box office draw). He oozes winning charisma and charm. Laugh-out-loud funny. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Stephen Chow films!!!.......2006-05-01

This and some other classics by Stephen Chow blow away his recent movies Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle. Don't expect the same type of action though as this is on of his true slapstick style comedies without all the new fangled hollywood special effects.

I own the VCD version, so I can't comment on the DVD version, but I recommend anyone who appreciates a good laugh to get this flick.

4 out of 5 stars Very funny if you understand his language.......2000-06-21

This is actually a very funny film after all. The way this film represents students is almost correct. The main character played the major role among his peers on tricking the faculties. Some methods he uses in the movie are just hilarious and crazy. But sometimes the degree of their tricks got really dangerous. I would recommend this comedy for mature audiences.

Stephen Chow has to go back to school undercover and brings along his friends he met in the last movie. Funny how part 2 lives up to the title and he really has to fight back to school this time. Him and his girlfriend are going to get married, but he ends up spending all of their wedding money on his undercover job. Deannie Yip has a small role as the Chief Inspector and she is brilliant just like always. And nice to see cameos from Blacky Ko, James Wong, and Mark Houghton.

Fight Back to School part 1 is a great comedy, yet still managed to stay serious for a large portion of the film. Part 2 is just a masterpiece in every way. The comedy comes in huge doses and I won't even try elaborate on how funny it is. Only Stephen Chow can pull off not wanting to kiss an 18 year old girl this well. It is really a dream sequel for fans of the first movie.

Sadly, the fights are even more sparse than Part 1. That is because there are no real fights. Everything is played for laughs and it works very well. There is a great shootout at the end and it tops the movie off nicely.

2 out of 5 stars Your kids will probably be bored.......2007-03-17

I realize that this batch of films is aimed at older teenagers and college kids, not adults over the age of 25. However, you can probably do much better picking out films your kids will watch than this collection. That's not to say that there aren't some great yet silly films in the batch, because there are. Next I describe each film in descending order of quality.

UHF (1989) - This is a great film starring Weird Al Yankovic as a directionless young man whose uncle gives him a rundown TV station to manage. His unconventional programming turns things around for himself and the station.

Cooley High (1975) - This is a great film for all ages, and was the basis for the sitcom "What's Happening", although it only faintly resembles it. It is set in south-side Chicago in the mid 60's, and concerns a group of high school friends that have numerous comic encounters, but there is also some tragedy involved in the plot.

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) - The first one was very funny and fresh, and Keanu Reeves will always be Ted as far as I'm concerned, even if he winds up doing Shakespeare at some point. The plot concerns two slackers who are about to fail history that are given some help from a time traveller from the future. The only problem is that it is so steeped in 80's pop culture that your kids may not get half the jokes.

Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991) - The second one is still funny, it just seems to try harder and not get quite the same comic effect as the first.

The rest of the movies are under the National Lampoon label.

Dorm Daze (2003) - One of National Lampoon's better college farce movies, with the plot set up by a series of silly misunderstandings. The closest thing you're going to get to "Animal House" 25 years after the fact.

Going the Distance (2004) - A Canadian version of Roadtrip. This movie was better than I expected, with a lot of good interaction between the main characters, but still not that great even for a teen farce.

Class Reunion (1982) - This movie had all the ingredients to be funny, but it just bored me, even in 1982. Top that off with all of the 80's and even 70's pop culture references, and I don't think it would do much for today's kids.

The last three movies are just awful - "Movie Madness", "Gold Diggers", and "Van Wilder 2: The Rise of Taj". I won't even bother to describe them. When I say they're bad, I'm saying they are boring and completely unfunny. If you force your kids to sit through these three films as part of their summer break, they'll be looking forward to going back to school.

The end result is you have three good to excellent films that are all older movies, four mediocre to OK films, and three horrible movies. I think you can do much better at entertaining your older teenagers/college kids than this collection.
