The son (Chris Makepeace) of a hotel manager (Martin Mull) finds himself the target of the school bully (Matt Dillon, in his breakthrough movie role). So he makes an offer to a school outcast--the biggest kid in class (Adam Baldwin), who reputedly has actually killed someone. He'll pay him to be his bodyguard against the bully. But the business arrangement turns into friendship, even as the smaller boy learns his new friend's secret shame. The first film by director-producer Tony Bill, this one comes down a little too heavily on the feel-good notes (and includes a gratingly precious appearance by Ruth Gordon in her lovable eccentric mode) but works because of strong performances by its young cast. --Marshall Fine

NOT JUST ANOTHER "HIGH SCHOOL BULLY" MOVIE!.......2007-06-28
This film is much deeper than the title would lead you to believe. A well crafted story and really good characters make this an engrossing little film. You will see young Matt Dillon,Joan Cusack and Adam Baldwin, plus Ruth Gordon and Martin Mull. My Bodyguard is an exceptional film and should not be missed.
On Bullies, Bodyguards, and an Unexpected Friendship.......2007-06-18
This flick was filmed in Chicago. It co-stars Joan Cusack as a high-school sophomore. (In time, she starred in many other roles, and is well known for her phone commercials).
High schooler Clifford Peach, accustomed to a sheltered background, is bullied by Moody and his crew. He is extorted, teased, tripped, and once blindfolded and forced into a locker. At another time, garbage is thrown on his clothes in his locker. The principal is of minimal help.
Clifford attempts to hire John Linderman, a tall fellow, as a bodyguard, but the latter isn't interested. But, gradually they open up to each other, and become friends. Clifford locates a cylinder that enables Linderman to finish his home-built motorcycle. They go on rides together. In time, Linderman relates a horrible personal secret to Clifford.
There is place for humor in this film. They use a telescope, in Peach's hotel room, to look at heavenly bodies. But these are not celestial objects. They are women in tall buildings located some distance from the hotel.
Clifford has conquered his problem with bullies--or so it seems. But if Clifford can get a bodyguard, so can Moody, his old nemesis. And so there is the inevitable fisticuffs between the bodyguards. How will it end?
My Bodyguard: Social Class, Inner City School Environments, and Personal Growth.......2007-05-09
The movie is well done with a fine cast. What makes it unusual is the manner in which it deals with some fundamental elements in the "coming of age process." One of the themes one can chart throughout a life cycle is the evolution of the concept of power. One finds that in the elementary grades where power is physical and individualistic. The mindset atthis point is "whose the tuffest kid in the class." As one moves towards high school the notion of power becomes redefined into a more social framework such as team sports (football, basketball, etc.). It still deals with the physical domain of power, but more social (team efforts sanctioned by the institutional structure, i.e., the school). However there is a class divide that exists within the schools. Those who come from middle class families are more readily moved forward towards college and the professions. Those who are disenfranchised do not. The realization of this on the part of the disenfranchised can lead to hostility expressed in the form of physical threats. This is the nub of the movie. A bright student comes to an inner city school and finds himself the target of a formidable group of bullies. Realizing that he is no physical match he decides that the way to deal with this delemma is trump his tormentors by finding someone even more menacing. At first the potential bodyguard is reticent and dismisses the offer, but eventually the two are drawn together by circumstances and become friends. The result of the friendship is the focus of the movie: the evolution of each of these characters as a result of their interaction with one anther. Needless to say, the bullies are vanquished in the end and the two main characters (the "geek" and his bodyguard)continue to evolve well beyond the point of their first encounter. The movie is also a bit unusual in the sense that it treats the psychological motiviation of the "bodyguard" at a deeper level that one might expect from a teen movie. It's well done and the cast is excellent with a story told in a very believable fashion.
My Bodyguard.......2007-05-07
I've always liked this movie. The best thing is, the bullies finally get it in the end! It makes you remember that the fear itself is usually worse than the thing you have been fearing, and that if you don't contront your problem at some point, it will never get any better. And you might just find out some things about yourself.
"Without the bike. It's Moody's now".......2007-03-31
I remember liking this movie when it came out when I was a kid, but it wasn't until I saw it many years later as an adult that I really appreciated it. Aside from the great acting by all the kids and classic lines, what I like most about it is that it's actually realistic and believable. The look on Clifford's face when he realizes he's offended Moody with his "BM" joke is priceless. Even the fight scenes are pretty realistic, not like most fight scenes where a guy takes 30 punches (with obligatory punch sound effects) straight to the face and then isn't even bleeding. I thought the little punk whacking rocks with a 2x4 in the vacant lot next to Linderman's house was a nice touch. Matt Dillon was great(possibly his greatest performance to date) and my friends and I still quote lines from Mike to this day (e.g. "You're really beginning to annoy me"). I thought Mike's 'towel around the neck tucked in to his sweatjacket' look at the end was pretty funny. Was he training up there? Or maybe sparring with Moody's buddies? What ever happened to Mike? I can't believe he didn't get more work after that performance. All in all, a great movie. A classic.

My Name Is Modesty is a sleek but hardy entertainment based on cartoonist Peter O'Donnell's story about an orphaned girl who survives wars, deserts, and sundry hardships to become the tough manager of a Tangiers casino. Alexandra Staden (Vanity Fair) is the second actress to play Modesty Blaise in a feature film (Monica Vitti took the role in 1966), and her beautiful cool and enigmatic poise are perfect for the mysterious yet likeable heroine. My Name Is Modesty cleverly introduces Modesty's background and wiles in a thriller set during an armed takeover of the casino. Deflecting demands by a terrorist leader (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) while also creatively keeping hostages alive, Modesty agrees to a game of roulette with the strongman. She plays for lives; he plays to hear chapters from her unknown life, reluctantly told. Directed by actor-director Scott Spiegel and presented by Quentin Tarantino (among the DVD's special features is a conversation between the two), the film is a noble, engaging genre piece. --Tom Keogh
Description
Presented by Quentin Tarantino, MY NAME IS MODESTY is the thrilling adventure about a sexy spy who's skilled in the art of deception ... and the ways of revenge! Orphaned as a child and raised by a casino owner with ties to the mob, Modesty Blaise learned early on how to fight, steal, and spy. Once grown, she becomes the casino owner's bodyguard, but is ultimately unable to protect him from a murderous old enemy. Now, with vengeance on her mind, it's time for payback! Based on the popular "Modesty Blaise" series of graphic novels, it's a stylish big-screen adaptation full of action and suspense!
Customer Reviews:
At last - Although not quite there yet.......2007-01-07
At last somebody who actually cares about the series made a film of it. My only criticism is that it was a bit too low budget. Ms Staden was excellent as Modesty, though I agree that she is going to have to work out a bit if she is going to play the older Blaise in a later film.
One point about the secret agent issue: I suggest that some people read/reread the books. It is very clear that Modesty worked with (although not "for" as she herself underlines on a couple of occasions ) British Intelligence more than once. Indeed two of her closest friends are senior intelligence officers - remember the name Sir Gerald Tarrant anyone?
Misleading Case, Not a Bad Movie...........2006-11-24
As previous reviewers point out, the DVD case is completely misleading. Whoever designed the front cover and wrote the back copy clearly had never seen the movie.
* There are no car chases in this movie
* "most lethal secret agent"?!? (She's not a secret agent)
* "sexy spy" (She's not a spy.)
* "revenge ... payback..." (C'mon ... the women is trying to get out of a hostage situation ...)
In addition to...
* While the female lead had her moments, she looks anorexic (not very attractive). There are SO many beautiful women out there ... where do they producer/directors find these boney women?!?
* The overall acting is stilted at times.
If you can get past the lies on the front cover and the low budget production feel, this movie provides a fairly good story.
I'd give it a higher rating, but the unethical false advertising of the cover is something I find very disturbing.
Limited but enjoyable.......2006-07-04
The blurb on the DVD case is very misleading. I only watched it because I'm a huge comic to movie junkie. I just like seeing characters I've grown up with come out of the 2 dimension paper world onto the screen. The movie was stilted but the depiction of Modesty and attempt at providing some depth to her character and building her background was enjoyable. Not a fast paced movie, but intriguing and worth the watch.
After disastrous 60's movie and TV shows, this one shines.......2005-11-10
For a prequel, this was surprisingly good, expecially when compared with previous attempts. As other reviewers noted, production values are not what they could be and Modesty is too flabby to be the fighting machine she is supposed to be. But the director and actors and the writers actually seemed to understand who and what Modesty Blaise is supposed to be about. As for flab, the TV blonde Modesty played by Diana Crosby (I think that was the name) was flabbier and much more of a weakling and the later dark-haired one on TV smiled too much. Except for the flabbiness, I could almost believe this Modesty. I wish they would start making the Modesty Blaise movies. The public is now ready to accept a strong physical woman such as Modesty. If you are a Modesty Blaise fan, the DVD is worth having. Forget the Monica Vitti version however.
Modesty finally gets her due!.......2005-09-02
Peter O'Donnell has created the perfect female James Bond and now they have put her early days in a film that does her justice. Hopefully this is just the first of many. Now that the books have stopped we only have the films to look forward to. It could have been longer and it could have had more action but it was a great start to what could be a great series. Keep it up!
