Intelligent insanity.......2007-06-20

British humor is unique and could be considered an art form in and of itself. British humor in the form of a science-fiction adventure movie is something else altogether. This movie, along with Brazil and the Adventures of Baron Munchausen, form a trilogy of fantasy classics by Terry Gilliam. Whereas Brazil is more of an apocalyptic view of the future, and Baron Munchausen is steeped in Greek mythology and European history, this movie is more of a pure adventure story with lots of ridiculous scenes thrown in.

The plot of Time Bandits is simple. Six dwarfs, servants of God, steal God's map of time-space and use it travel throughout human history. They stop at various times and places to steal loot from wealthy individuals, such as Napoleon (Ian Holm) and King Agamemnon (Sean Connery). Along the way, the sink with the Titanic, and get robbed by Robin Hood (John Cleese). They pick up an English boy living at the end of the 20th century, and bring him along in their travels. In the end, they encounter Evil himself, and have to be rescued by God.

This movie is classic British humor. Sarcasm and wit overflow; action scenes are funny because of how ludicrous they are, and scene after scene pokes fun at the powerful. The scenes with the dwarfs are also great, as they alternate between hitting each other Three Stooges style to performing feats worthy of any circus. For such an old movie, the film quality was great. The special effects were believable, but did not distract from the storyline. The dialog was also good. Unfortunately, the soundtrack was nondescript, and parts of it sounded like it was copied from The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. But overall, a good movie and quite interesting to watch.

Classic but not perfect.......2007-06-07

Unlike many Americans, I have this love of British humor. Or would that be humour? Well, there is something to English hilarity; that dry, mature comedy that carries with it an adolescent streak Americans too often translate as juvenile in their our own format. True, Gilliam is American, but his humor is far from. In Time Bandits, one of his best works, we get to travel alongside the Supreme Being's ousted aides as they try to find a new living as time traveling thieves. Of course they fail at every turn until their greed lands them in the hands of Evil himself. David Warner is the stand out in this movie. I literally love every performance he has ever done. And Sean Connery, who knew he could give a subtle, unselfish performance. There are plot holes which nagged at me, especially the point that everyone, no matter the era, speaks English! Still, this is an adventure that can't help but to resurrect the child in you. Movies like this are a rarity in the modern age.

I have always thought this movie was one of the strangest movies around. I really enjoy dark movies and this one is no exception. The storyline twists and turns so much. The characters are great along with the little guy actors who played them. The scene on the beach when they break the mirror is cool. This dvd is better than the first edition released but it could still be done better I would think. It gets five stars because it's a great adventure movie that's really dark and twisted.

Diverting Divertissement.......2007-06-27

I usually watch films alone or with one other person--just my little quirk. BANDITS was the rare film that I watched with several other people after a pleasant dinner at the home of one of them (the best cook of all, fortunately!). As an "evening's entertainment," the Bruce Willis/Billy Bob Thornton caper was just right, for the most part. But in the back of my mind, I'll admit, I kept wondering what kind of impression the film would have made in a less convivial setting.

BANDITS has lots of genuinely funny moments--and an equal number of ones that fall flat. But it's such a likeable bit of fluff overall that you can (at least under the right circumstances) forgive it its flaws. Willis and Thornton could be accused of doing shtick, I suppose, but it's masterful shtick at least. Yes, I'd have to agree with those who find Billy Bob's Terry Lee character just a little too damn neurotic (and dysfunctionally hypochondriac) to actually pull off a series of bank robberies and daring escapes. But at least in the mood I was in while watching, my attitude was more along the lines of "Hey, it's an "action comedy" not Ibsen."

I will let the debate over Cate Blanchett's being cast as Kate Wheeler, the frustrated LA hausfrau who escapes her confining marriage to join up with hese two self-styled latter day Robin Hoods. This argument will likely continue for as long as people are still checking this movie out for the first time. For those doubters out there, I say, look beyond he impeccable American accent (and it IS that) and see her performance for the marvel it is. It's always fun to see a gifted dramactic actor getting the chance to let her flaming red hair down. (Have her and Tori Amos stand in field, and you could use them to land airplanes.) It's also nice when said gifted dramatic actor can pull said knock-off role off without appearing to be overtly slumming.

But the movie still suffers from the too-long--and maybe a little too cute for its own good syndrome. The longueurs do start to set in well before the film's actual end. You may have heard or read that the film has a delightful twist at the end. Well, you're likely to see it coming, if you've been paying any kind of attention to the plot at all. Which doesn't mean to imply that it all suddenly falls together and (just as suddenly) falls into place. Just how smart are these guys supposed to be anyway?

You are likely to enjoy this flick if you view it as just that, a MOVIE MOVIE. It was only AFTER seeing it with my friends the other night that I went back and read some of the rather mixed criticism that the movie received upon its release (and since!). And, ironically, for once I'm less on the side of the film crit establisshment than on that of the easy-to- entertain masses). I can well see the point of those who complain that this movie doesn't quite achieve what it sets out to do (as either a caper film or as a latter day screwball comedy), but still, as an evening's entertainment, it was just fine.

Charming Caper.......2007-04-16

Another movie where my best friend and I split. I, too, believe that Cate Blanchett stole this film. Without her, it feels too much like The whole nine yards (comedy-wise) but with Thornton cast in Matthew Perry's slot. Bad hair-pieces aside, Bruce Willis' comedies feels pretty much the same dating all the way back to his Moonlighting days. Thornton gives into his corky side, but Blachette absolutely shines, orange hair and all. Recommended.

It's Cate's Movie.......2007-04-04

I stumbled across this movie on cable one night and was immediately captured by it, much like the bank managers chosen for one of their capers by Bruce and Billy Bob. This is an intriguing tale that draws the viewer in father with each scene, and both boys give excellent performances, but the real star of the show is Ms Blanchett, who characteristically inhabits her role from the bone marrow out, switching back and forth between her character's own diverse personalities along the way. That the caper ends with all using their brains to get away cleanly makes it even better. Can't say enough about this film.

Billy Bob is the greatest as a hypochondriac! And Bruce Willis' dry humor and sarcasm is so clever. Love this movie!

Beavers and Ducks!.......2007-02-12

After watching this movie the first time, I remember being surprised at how much I loved it. The chemistry & humor between the three stars makes for such a helarious ride, this is one of the few movies I can watch over and over. There is something laugh at something new each time. Very clever performances by all and Billy Bob is one of a kind.

The movie is a australia based BMX bike movie. The DVD appears to be a direct copy from a VHS version. The picture is grainy and the sound is ok but it is widescreen. there is no visual problems with the movie and the sound is good. Neither are digital remastered caliber.

the movie is about three BMXers that stumble upon radios that bank robbers need for their next job. the movie is set as PG, fun for the whole family.

I give it a 4 star becasue of the picture and sound quality but at this price it's hard to argue.

An 80's Classic on DVD.......2006-07-29

The quality is as good as it was in the 80's and the DVD is a great quality and value for the price. This is the classic BMX movie starring Nicole Kidman.

Not as good as the manga.......2007-02-28

I bought the series because i'm a huge fan of the manga it's based off. And well it doesn't let you down. The series is about a kid named Jing and his partner Kire who are bandits plain and simple and their varries jobs. Mind you not the I'm goign to kill and rape everything in sight bandit, more along the lines of gentlemen thief like Lupin III except twice as smooth and three times as cool.

Each episode comes in pars that are pretty much isolated from each other. Jing is likeable and cool, Kire is Kire. The series the only bad thing about the series is that it focuses to much on Kire, he steals the show and I didn't reallyl ike him. The girls are also likeable and cute each different in a set number of ways. The thing that bring the series down is that its based off a perfect manga, and duplicating perfecting isn't easy. Many of the things in the manga that were hillarious come off flat, then there is the fact that Jing repeats the same line everytime he shots is Kire Royal. The animation is a throw back to the eighties, not in quality but in character designs which is nice. quality wise it's pretty good the voice acting is okay same with the music. the plots are intersting and suspensefull but I always end up feeling sorry for the girl that ends up falling for Jing and getting left behind never to see him again. There are a few orginal stories that are well done. Over all Jing King of Bandits the anime is a good series and worth the buy so pick it up.

Try it, it's a fun series!.......2006-08-09

This series is about a boy named Jing who, as the title suggests, is King of Bandits (as in skill, not through election). His only companion is a bird named Kir who can bond with Jing's arm to form a sort of magical cannon for the attack "Kir Royale". This attack is a little repetitive (as it is his only attack), however, it isn't very long and it looks cool. Jing is an interesting character, very calm and laid back. His demeanor is always that of someone who knows exactly what is going on and what to do. It isn't easy to tell if this is true or not.

As far as I can tell, there is no overall plot to this series. It is a bunch of short stories, most only lasting for a single episode (there are 13 episodes in all). While I would have enjoyed an actual story line (Jing is a fun character with lots of mystery surrounding him), I really liked the freedom that short stories gave. I looked forward to each episode, but it wasn't urgent for me to see the next episode because I just NEEDED to see what happened next. All of the stories excluding one were very entertaining and even that one wasn't too bad.

Both the English and the Japanese dubs were good, though I preferred the Japanese version as Jing sounded more like a kid (as he is supposed to be). The English voice just sounded a bit too old for the character.

All in all, I would really recommend this series to anyone. So go see it!

It Could Have Been A Five Star Series.......2006-04-28

The concept of Jing- King of bandits alone is five stars. He's a guy with the swagger of a well-experienced man in the world of stealing but he's a teen. The mere thought of his name in a town make owners of valuable objects pack extra security. Jing doesn't always go after stuff that's worth money sometimes it will be priceless but he's a cool kid and sees it for it's beauty and not it's worth. This is no doubt a hot series but what's the problem with it? Well for one almost everything is a little too easy for Jing.

Even though he's the king of bandits it would be nice to see him have to work a little harder instead of him just showing up at the site and using his trusty sidekick Kir to blast away the enemies with one shot. It's almost as if it's a kids series at times. Then there's the problem with a few episodes that are just plain stupid and pointless and take you nowhere in the story. Even with the flaws I pointed out Jing is still amazing. The animation is fantastic and the story is pretty good but I watched it mostly to see what Jing was going up against. It's a good series but not a great one and it needs some work but it's still very entertaining.

After watching Episode 1.......2006-03-15

So far, not much story has deveolped (but thats expected from just episode one), the only thing learned so far you learn who the main character and his partner are. You also get to witness some of his abilities, that he and his partner share, which looks pretty cool and seems to have a devastating effect on the opposing side.

In episode one you meet Jing and Kir. Jing comes off as the calm, determined type. He of course turns out to be king of the bandits (as the title suggests), and it's easy to see why. He steals a rare stone that another bandit keeps in his mouth, without the guy knowing. All just to prove a point. Kir, is his side-kick albatross. Kir's main point of the show seems to be your comedy relief, as he wisecracks and has a perverted needs to stare at womens chests.

Breakdown:
The animation is smooth and has it's 'eye-candy' moments. The story seems to be that of a slow developing but entertaining one none-the less. Think along the lines of One Piece, only not as cheesy (that's not to say One Piece is bad, I like One Piece as well, but I think I like this one more. ).

I hope by reading my review, you come to your own decision. As we all know, everyone has their own tastes and opinions.

I bought this movie because I am a fan of Maynard James Keenan. I am also a fan of hot chicks and muscle cars. All of which are served up in heavy doses throughout the flick. Regardless, I bairly made it through my initial viewing, and to date I haven't even considered giving it a second look. Save your money.

I'm shocked that most people that reviewed this film didn't like it. The first time I watched this I immediately played it again and possibly again after that. Now I've seen it so many times I've lost count. It's warped, twisted, hilarious, and has lots of T & A. The G-mart commercials had me cackling, Maynard and his huge doner (swoon, well that says it all), and Corey's dance routine had me squealing with glee. If you have a slightly disturbed sense of humor you will love this. However, it will probably offend many which is why I loved it. I scored hella brownie points when I gave this to my boyfriend for Christmas last year. If this sounds like something you would like then buy two copies because you may wear it out. And there are very few flicks I can say that about. Mad props to Steve Grasse!!

Good collection of Bikini Bandits shorts........2004-10-21

For those unfamiliar, the Bikini Bandits is a regular staple of short films from atomfilms.com. The movie is a collection of 3 or 4 of these type of shorts, with snippits of false advertisments in between. The first time through watching this, I felt it was hard to watch, but after the initial adjustment I came to love it. What makes this film all the more brilliant is that all of these idiot tool fans latched on to it simply due to Maynard's role as Satan, and then hated the movie. They get what they deserve. Maynard isn't god, Maynard is just a nerd who likes Star Trek (check t.d.n. if you don't believe me) So, is this for Maynardites? Hell no. This is for fans of true avant-garde cinema. Featuring cameos by Corey Feldman (who drops a reference to realultimatepower.net), Jello Biafria (Dead Kennedys), Dee Dee Ramone (the Ramones), and a surprise cameo as extras by Phil and Bam Margera, and Ryan Dunn. The only real issue I had with this dvd are the phone conversations between segments. I don't know if they were meant to be funny or what, but they're annoying and I would have liked to have done without them. But beggars can't be choosers. This is high quality internet short film brilliance.

This DVD was ok. Didn't blow my skirt up. left me feeling lonely, even depresed. Felt like eating ice cream with butterscotch. Also the the bikini's were itchy. Other then that this DVD did not have the quality I was hoping it shoud have had.
