Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Roller Boogie is Awesome.......2007-05-07

I was so excited to see that this movie was being sold on DVD. I really enjoy the show. I grew up in the 80's and I loved roller skating. If you are not a major critic and enjoy roller skating, then get the movie. The movie is really exciting with alot of great music and lots of skating. It brought back some of the memories of my younger days. I intend to buy two more movies for my and my friends.

1 out of 5 stars One star is too many!.......2007-05-04

OK, that's a little harsh. One star is probably not too many for a movie that isn't really a "movie" in the sense of having a coherent plot, credible dialogue, minimal acting skills, etc. "Roller Boogie" would have made a perfect Charlie's Angels episode -- in fact, it did, when Jaclyn, Farrah and Kate (or their stunt doubles) donned their four-wheel, suede-booted skates and chased the bad guys down Venice Beach.

But the Angels were the Angels; everything they did was in the greater service of looking good, acting very little, and trying not to laugh their way through ridiculous plots. "Roller Boogie", on the other hand, offers us Queen of the B's Linda Blair surrounded by a bevy of nonactors, a raft of horrendous disco songs (this stuff makes the Bee Gees sound like great art), and endless choreographed disco-on-skates numbers. Round, and round, round and round the kids skate. And the bad guys lose at the end.

How did we ever survive the 80's?

4 out of 5 stars Dance Craze Time Capsule.......2007-05-03

Yes, corny dialogue and paper-thin cliched plot invloving corporate goons vs. innocent fun-loving teens, but unpretentious nonetheless. With sincere performances from Linda Blair and company, real roller disco dance sequences by the leads, period clothing, choreography and music (mostly ballads and disco), this movie is pure escapism!

4 out of 5 stars The Poor Man's Xanadu? Or Rich Man's Dance Fever with Denny Terrio!.......2007-04-23

I liked Linda Blair ever since her prison shower scene in Chained Heat. (U2's Bono famously introduced "Helter Skelter", "Charles Manson stole this song from the Beatles, and we're stealing it back!" Well, the musical "Chicago" stole women in prison movies, and I'm stealing them back -- with a B-Movie script I'm working on, "Bars of Iron, Bars of Soap", with Pam Anderson in mind as the warden). Anyway, back to roller disco movies.... Roller Boogie doesn't quite measure up to Xanadu, although Linda Blair is more than ample for the role of spandex wearer. [Olivia Newton-John is a goddess, but Blair is just so... skatable with (uh! uh!)] Both movies have Andy Gibb looking actors as so-so leads, so it's up to the ladies to carry the load. (And oh, how Blair carries the load, quite well in spandex indeed!) Xanadu obviously has the superior soundtrack, with Olivia, ELO, and Gene Kelly putting on the hits and ritz. That said, Roller Boogie uses Earth, Wind, and Fire's "Boogie Wonderland", although it seems to be the sole hit the producers were willing to pay for. The rest of the soundtrack sounds like an episode of CHiPs. Visually -- babe wise -- Roller Boogie does quite well, with its LA "foxes next door"... in spandex. In terms of production value, I'd say Roller Boogie's disco scenes are on par with Denny Terrio's Dance Fever - and soar above the latter era Dance Fever with Adrian Zmed (who acted at that same time with the purr-ific Heather Locklear on TJ Hooker.... Don't rent it - it's not about prostitution). I would also rank Roller Boogie over The Boy in the Plastic Bubble -- which didn't have disco or rollerskates, but did have a lead actress that looked like Blair, and a lead who was literally in a bubble, while Blair's Roller Boogie character is in the "bubble" her super-rich, suffocating parents want for her. Her lawyer dad thinks disco is dangerous! "It-it-it's that inSANE disco music! You're an artist, a musical genius! And I'm not going to have my daughter... skating." But we know better. We know more than super-rich lawyers! You can't stop disco! (Blair's home life scenes have a nostalgic quality, with the look and drama of "Dynasty" - not too shabby). Roller Boogie is a great transport back to a golden age of disco fever and gilded spandex -- you can't beat that! Except with Xanadu, the pure angelic white leg warmers to Roller Boogie's spandex tops (uh, uh!) and bare bronzed meaty legs... so honey coated... want to touch the hi-ney.
