Give credit to director Betty Thomas for making the notorious Howard Stern, self-proclaimed "king of all media," into a nerdish but appealing media rebel who loves his wife and family. Even if you hate Stern's rude radio show, you may discover that the underdog charm of this warm, whimsical film (based on Stern's autobiography) turns you into a fan--for the length of the film at least. Stern delivers a winning performance as the clumsy college kid and aspiring disc-jockey-turned-demon-shock-jock, who becomes an unlikely hero as he battles station managers, network executives, and conservative "arbiters of decency" in the name of unfettered bad taste. Mary McCormack is fine as his understanding wife, Alison, and longtime Stern sidekicks Robin Quivers and Fred Norris acquit themselves nicely appearing as themselves. By the end of this smart, funny little film, don't be surprised if you find yourself cheering for the slob. --Sean Axmaker

This ia wonderfully funny film about a truly unusual entertainer and his initial rise in American media entertainment pantheon. It's been available on DVD without any real substantial extras for quite a good while now. Would it behoove Paramount or their corporate Redstone-led overlords to bury the hatchet and allow Howard, et alia, to create a truly innovative and entertaining re-issue of this DVD that would encompass commentaries, documentaries, games and other stuff that only and his creative team could only dream up? Sales would go through the roof, the fans would love it, everyone happy, right?

Actually, was a very good movie, for "Howard Stern" comedy. He needs to release a sequel...

Description

Check out who's checked in at the musty old King Edward Hotel in a seedy section of L.A.: Cheryl, a runaway teen who hopes to piece her life together. Little does she know that someone at the hotel has a nasty little penchant for chopping people into pieces. Welcome, happy campers, to one of the screen's most bizarre works of camp filmmaking. Paul Bartel (Eating Raoul, Lust in the Dust) directs, guiding this loopy foray "with the fervor of a carny barker at a freak show" (Jay Cocks, Time). Murder, fetishism, a dotty aunt, a sham clergyman, corny cops, a Peeping Tom and a guy who's a girl who goes nite-nite with a blow-up doll that has a photo of Cheryl's face taped to it - they're among the feverish parts of Private Parts. If you're without reservations, drop by the hotel.

4 out of 5 stars Artsy and Bizarre.......2007-06-20

Plot: Teenage runaway Cheryl moves out of her best friends place after being caught 'spying' on her friend and boyfriend. She heads for Downtown La to her Aunt Marthas Old Hotel. After talking to her a little she says she can stay but she has to not get too involved with the guests in the hotel. On the way up to her room some good looking guy is standing there who happens to be 'George', for the time being the viewer and Cheryl just know hes a photographer, just one of the tenants yet identity is still kind of unknown,. Soon someone starts leaving weird notes and stories in her room, lingerie, etc .. she goes investigating and from there it just gets weirder and weirder.. it involves a disapearance of a model named 'Alice', George, a blow up doll and blood in a needle 'really odd' part and then the outrageous ending..It could have been somewhat better but overall it was a pretty good movie. The only part i was a little confused and disapointed on was the ending.

This is one of those movies where you wont forget it. The weirdness and the odd imagery is something that will stick in your head. It feels dirty, bleak and just morbid. George's room is something else. The way he tries to interact with women and the way he lets it out is so bizarre youre almost like what the hell was that? I have to say the 'suprise ending' was really a suprise considering the way George looked. Ive never seen something so bizarre. Psycho with a twist. Id give this 3.5-4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Not a review but a question.......2006-11-12

Has anyone noticed that the recent movie "skeleton key" has a lot in common with this one?

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise .......2006-05-21

Young runaway, Cheryl seeks refuge in her prudish aunt's highly peculiar San Francisco hotel, and in spite of her aunt's warnings, she soon finds herself swept up in the perversions of it's sorted clientèle.

Though a tad more conventional (and polished), Bartel's work usually fits in comfortably with that of Paul Morrissey and John Water's. I found the quirky nature of Private Parts pretty captivating, and Bartel manages to portray some fairly off-color goings on, which in more mean spirited, or less skilled hands would have been hard to sit through.

You have to hand it to Warner for putting the late Paul Bartel's Private Parts out on DVD (and a nice looking DVD at that). It's by no means a "big" cult favorite, but a pleasantly surprising little cult favorite that might of easily have languished in vault. I don't know what made them choose it, but I'm glad they did.

4 out of 5 stars "Godd**n weirdos are taking over this country!".......2006-01-24

Hot (for the 70's) teenage runaway Cheryl splits from Ohio and ends up in Los Angeles staying at an old rundown hotel full of weirdos. The weirdest of all is George and he has a crush on Cheryl.

Not as perverse as I was hoping it would be (then again no film ever is), but I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this movie. The story moved along at a nice pace and even though it never perved out in a big way I still felt satisfied and would watch it again.

The picture on the DVD was great, but I wish there had been a commentary track by somebody. Yea, I know Paul Bartel is dead but somebody must have something interesting to say about this film.

Look for a cameo by director Paul Bartel in the park.

4 out of 5 stars ''Cheryl is a lovely girl....".......2005-12-18

"Private Parts", the directorial debut of Paul Bartel, is a wild and thoroughly engaging black comedy. Ayn Ruymen plays Cheryl, a young but not so innocent girl, who runs away from home and eventually ends up at the hotel of her Aunt Martha (Lucille Benson)in the skid row section of downtown Los Angeles. Although warned by her puritanical aunt to stay put, Cheryl explores the old place at every opportunity, soon becoming involved with George, a mysterious photographer. He is only one of the odd tenants in the establishment, but he's the one who fascinates her the most. With its lurid plot, beautiful color photography and great, brooding score, "Private Parts" is not to be missed! This October, Warner Home Video will release it in a widescreen DVD featuring the original trailer! It's not likely to be in print long, so grab it while you can! [phillindholm]

          1 out of 5 stars women with chainsaws...watch out.......2006-06-05

i'll stick with good old Leatherface for my chainsaw action. Though Gunnar Hansen IS in this film, he does more mumbling and preaching than killing. Nudity? Nothing new here. Violence? I've seen more violence on any prime time cop show. Gore? absolutely not. So what would make this film enjoyable if none of the above exist in it? absolutely nothing. we get to see a bunch of ugly white trash hookers (and i mean ugly) follow fat gunnar around talking about a Church of the Chainsaw. Oh yeah, and the lead actor detective guy succeeded in annoying me and not being funny, so congrats.

Summary: LEAVE THE CHAINSAWS TO BE HANDLED BY PEOPLE WHO KNOW HOW TO USE IT!

3 out of 5 stars GUNNAR HANSON (LEATHERFACE) IS IN IT!.......2006-05-14

ok this is another one of those movies made for PUBESCENT BOYS to watch with the volume down late night while their parents are in bed!

          Filthy and lots of NUDITY

the GEM to this is that GUNNAR HANSEN of LEATHERFACE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE fame is in it

and he runs like a girl at the end!

          but yeah!

          It's funny!

3 out of 5 stars No Shakespeare here.......2005-11-19

If awards were given for exploitation movie titles, this one would qualify for Lifetime Achievement recognition. In this 1988 send-up of "splatter" films, female members of a blood cult pose as prostitutes and carve up their share of over-amorous males. With a title like this, you know exactly what kind of fare you're in for right from the start, so there's no point in expressing aesthetic outrage over any of the film's shortcomings. (This is not WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS, so keep your complaints to yourself.) Of special note is the participation of perennial "Scream Queen" Michelle Bauer, billed here as Michelle McLellan. Unlike some other SQs who perfunctorily scream and expose their breasts on cue, Bauer always conveys a sense of giddy enthusiasm in her performances; she actually seems to relish the idea of shrieking at the top of her lungs, getting splashed with fake blood, and cavorting buck nekkid. You've gotta love a trouper like that.

5 out of 5 stars Not For The "Politically Correct" Viewers!!! (But Ms. Quigley Is So HOT As Always!!!).......2005-10-11

I just love this movie and it is perfect Drive In Movie Fare. It has nudity, beautiful women , gratuitous violence and the "Queen Of The B's" Ms. Linnea Quigley!!! Gee. What more could you want?If you don't like this movie then I suggest you get your Levels Of the Male Hormone Testosterone examined. Or maybe you are just suited to a sucessful career as a Politician or an Accountant!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great chainsaw fun.......2005-06-10

This movie has it all from full frontal nudity too chainsaw side spliting laughs . The acting anit too bad and the one liners had me laughing a few times . Some cheesy gore and great naked ladies makes this movie a gem for any collection .
