Yes, that's a former Beatle in caveman costume for this more-dumb-than-funny 1981 comedy about a prehistoric misfit (Ringo Starr) who recruits other misfits to start a new tribe. The jokes about flatulence and sex are banal, but the cast of then-unfamiliar faces is fun to watch from the perspective of history. The best thing going are some dinosaur special effects, though Ringo might argue meeting his future wife (Barbara Bach) was a good deal. --Tom Keogh

Quest for Fire is so detailed in its depiction of prehistoric man that it might have been made by time-traveling filmmakers. Instead it's a bold and timeless experiment by visionary director Jean-Jacques Annaud (The Bear), inviting scientific debate while presenting a fascinating, imaginary glimpse of humankind some 80,000 years ago. Using diverse locations in Kenya, Scotland, and Canada, Annaud tells the purely visual story of five tribes (some more advanced than others) who depend on fire for survival. They "steal" fire from nature, but the actual creation of fire remains elusive, lending profound mystery and majesty to the film's climactic, real-time display of fire-making ingenuity. Employing primitive language created by novelist Anthony Burgess and body language choreographed by anthropologist Desmond Morris, a unique ensemble of actors push the envelope of their profession, succeeding where they easily could've failed. They're carnal, violent, funny, curious, and intelligent; through them, and through the eons, we can recognize ourselves. --Jeff Shannon

Description

A colossal adventure odyssey that turns back the hands of time to the very beginning of man's existence. 80,000 years ago, when man roamed the earth, he was exposed to the many harsh elements of nature. Against the perilous atmosphere of rugged terrain, rival tribes and savage beasts, Quest for Fire examines a peaceful tribe's search for that all important element fire, and the knowledge to create it. Focusing on human dream as well as realistic insights into pre-historic man, the constant struggle for survival is vividly recreated in this sensational production.

5 out of 5 stars Best Caveman movie ever!.......2007-05-14

This movie is a classic, no dialogue, but brilliantly done and shows how cave men, early primitive man lived and interacted and what was important for them. Lots of fun, very enjoyable movie.

5 out of 5 stars great movie.......2007-05-13

This movie is great. I am sure not many people will like it, but it goes along with my tastes. It has a good story to it. I recommend everyone to watch at least once.

5 out of 5 stars 80,000 years ago!.......2007-04-14

Three men must find fire for their tribe. They don't know how to make fire just control it. So when their fire goes out they go south to find the flames that will help keep them safe from wild animals, cook their food and keep back the darkness of the night. Shot in Scotland, Canada and Africa the settings really seem harsh and dangerous.
Two commentary tracks and a Quest For Fire Adventure Featurette really brings out how hard it was to film this movie. Weather, the use of real animals, and the need to try to be as realistic as science could make them were all big factors when making the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Really cool movie.......2007-04-12

Kind of a strange film but definatly worth seeing. Its like the first section of 2001: a space oddesy meets Lord of the Rings. An eye-opening prespective on an idea of where we as creatured of this earth may have come from, and offers a unique juxtaposition to tribulations we face in our world today.

1 out of 5 stars It's not my type of comedies.......2007-06-27

The picture quality is good.
The people in this movie do not speak any language at all. They make some vocal sound but it's not English because it's supposed to happen long time ago. This does not bother me. I found very few funny moments in this film. Probably, it's not my type of comedies.

5 out of 5 stars the Best Comedy forever.......2007-01-20

Very nice movie from 1981 which was remastered in 2002. It's good thing for home DVD collection. You need no translation for "cave" language, because everything is funny and understandable.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!.......2007-01-11

Sure, the dinosaurs look a little ridiculous, but that makes them comical. Great acting, tons of laughs, etc. Get it. You'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun.......2006-11-04

Totally silly and hilarious movie. Starring some people you never thought would be in a movie together, such as Ringo Starr, Dennis Quaid and Shelly Long. I saw this movie originally as a kid and could'nt wait for it to arrive on DVD. Now that it's here it's now a family favorite. There are some scenes not appropriate for children but those are light and few.

one of my favorite movies, lots of memorable quotes and scenes. don't miss Barbara Bach's "attributes" and the giant mosquito! it's a movie you'll enjoy with your family, your buddies, or just by yourself! it's a "gotta have it" movie.

Brendan Fraser made his film debut in this 1992 comedy that never quite discovers its audience constituency. On the one hand, it features Pauly Shore, which would seem to define the picture's tone and identity accordingly. On the other hand, the film's other leading man is Sean Astin, the earnest star of Rudy, suggesting that Encino Man will have a lot of heart despite its silly premise. But none of that turns out to be true. Fraser plays an unfrozen caveman discovered by a pair of California high school outcasts (Shore and Astin). As the grunting newcomer becomes popular with the other kids, Shore and Astin try to bask in his reflected glow. Fraser, beginning a long movie career playing cartoonish goofballs, works entirely on instinct and earns his laughs. Shore, however, relies on his familiar verbal shtick, and Astin makes a great overgrown puppy pining after a lost girlfriend. Directed by Les Mayfield, who came to this project from his acclaimed documentary, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse. --Tom Keogh

Description

Starring Pauly Shore, Encino Man unearths the biggest laughs in 2 million years! The fun kicks off when two high school buddies dig up a frozen caveman in their backyard! Once the living fossil thaws out, the friends figure he's their ticket to being cool. But the plan backfires when the newcomer turns everyday life upside down, generating pre-hysterical craziness wherever he roams! Co-starring Sean Astin (Bulworth) and Brendan Fraser (The Mummy), you'll definitely dig Encino Man-- the totally irreverent, totally awesome comedy that shows just how hilariously out-of-control things evolve once the stone age meets the rock age head-on!

5 out of 5 stars Most excellent, but quick question for other fans out there..........2007-05-28

Loved this movie since it came out, so I've had both the vhs tape and the dvd of it. Has anyone else noticed that on the dvd version, a part is missing? When Dave and Stoney are trying to teach Link how to fight to defend himself - at the end of that scene - you don't hear Stoney's wonderful line, 'Ow, my pancreas!'

What's up with that?

Oh, and I'd just like to point out that the movie Clueless (another great flick) owes a good part of its linguistic brilliance to Encino Man.

5 out of 5 stars Stone Age and Cavemen.......2007-04-13

I brought this movie based on the fact that I watched it when I was younger and that I love it to pieces. I had to have it in my collection. I found the movie quite entertaining and funny as heck.

4 out of 5 stars Goofy, funny, silly but BIG FUN.......2007-01-09

This is not great art, this is only great fun. I typically never watch anything more than twice, once at the theater and then once again at home if it's really good. I watched this at my 8 year old nephew's house, laughed till my sides hurt and promptly ordered the dvd for myself. I've now watched it at least 6 times. Every time I need a good laugh, in goes Encino Man. My wife likes it just as much as I do. Good clean fun.

3 out of 5 stars The Weasel Interprets Unfrozen Caveman Adolescents.......2006-08-06

Though not as amusing as "In The Army Now" nor as conceptually satisfying as "Pauly Shore is Dead" (though mercifully less painful than "Bio-Dome,") "Encino Man" is typical lighthearted buffoonery not intended for anyone not in the demographic of males aged eight to twenty. Surprisingly, given his evident onscreen cranial development, Shore does not play the Encino Man, a role that goes to Brendan Fraser.

In essence, Shore and company find a caveman adolescent while digging a pool in the yard and take him to high school. Of course there is a whole competition for the pretty girl (which concludes with some prom related mayhem and cake defiling) with much of the plot about fitting in. Needless to say the caveman, "Link," becomes very popular, and learns to do many complex tasks (like driving a car on two wheels, and dancing to an absolutely wretched song apparently called "She Likes to Feed The Monkey") easily, while indirectly winning the Prom Queen amongst much drama. In the end there is an earthquake that sends Link's true love, a teenage cavewoman back from the Neolithic era for him to drool over, in what may be the single most contrived plot point in movie history.

Be sure to watch for the "hilarious" cultural interactions in the Latino bar (the subtitles about cheese are amusing) which served only to make me wish that the INS was that effective in real life. For some reason this also gives Shore the excuse to start his trademark "weasel" bit in an odd mix of English and Spanish.

This is ultra-light entertainment, yet has some modestly funny moments. This will be a hit with most teenage males, but won't convert anyone outside that demographic. The movie is essentially clean: it was rated "PG" in the US, the UK, Australia, and Singapore, rated "T" in Spain, rated "7" in Sweden, and received the desirable rating of "L" in Iceland.

5 out of 5 stars Super fun movie!!! Infectious Grooves is in the house........2006-03-03

This is such a fun movie to watch. It is so goofy and ridicualous and you never get tired of watching it. Encino Man and Pauly Shore is one of the reasons why the early 90s ruled. There are so many cool scenes in this like when Stoney takes Link to 7-11 and they cruise the aisles looking for some grindeage to munch on. And when they go to the Mountian and ride the Viper in reverse. And the drivers ed scene when Link thinks it is Rad Mobile and he puts it up on two wheels and they end up at the bar with all the Mexicans. "You see that girl muchacho. Dont look at her!" The prom scene was cool to, it had Infectious Grooves in it. They are a real band but that song was made for the movie. The singer and bass player are in Suicidal Tendencies and the bass player plays for Metallica now. But anyways... Yeah , this movie is totally radical. Daves room is really cool to. I wish my room was that rad. The school looks cool too. I wish my high school was like that. I notice that whenever i watch something like this that was filmed in the early 90s everything seemed real bright and cheerful. Am i crazy or has anyone else noticed this? Pauly Shores punch lines and phrases never get old. They age like a fine wine... Bud-dy.

Raquel Welch in a two-piece fur bikini. That and the title is pretty much all anyone needs to know. If that indeed isn't enough, there are the dinosaurs of technician-artist Ray Harryhausen (along with some superimposed iguanas), and a prologue that tells you all you want to know about this "brutal world." Want more? There are volcanoes, barehanded wrestling with warthogs, and rival, subhuman, cannibalistic tribes--Lord, the list goes on and on! The portrait of humankind isn't the most flattering: we're petty, greedy, we grunt a lot, and we don't play well with others. Welch portrays a cavewoman from the tribe of the Blondes trying to make a life for herself with an outcast from the tribe of the Brunettes, which doesn't sit well with anybody. --Keith Simanton

Description

In this vivid view of prehistoric life, a man from the mean-spirited Rock People (John Richardson) is banished from his home. He soon finds himself among the kind, gentle Shell People and falls in love with one of their loving tribeswomen (Raquel Welch). The twosome decide to face the world together, cut off from all tribal support, alone in a deadly world of hideous beast and earthshattering volcanic eruptions. The film's pioneering special effects have made it a true science-fiction classic.

3 out of 5 stars Cute babes in furry bikinys.......2007-06-11

This is the one that made Raquel Welch a star, no dialog hokey mosters and furry 2 part swimsutes. This was/is/will be a drive in classic. So have a few beers and just let this work of art flow over you. If you are a fan of Raquel this is a must have or if you and your mates and haveing a party in your dorm room this is the movie for you.

2 out of 5 stars One Million Years B.C. the complete version please!.......2007-06-04

When "One Million Years B.C." was released on dvd I couldn't wait to get a copy! Just think, a Ray Harryhuusen and Raquel Welch interview, commentaries, isolated score, making of documentary, boy was I dreaming! Not only did it not have any of those features, which I could sadly accept, the print they used was the CUT VERSION!!! Why the studio would cut any Harryhausen footage in the first place was ridiculous! The picture quality on the dvd is sharp and colorful but it's a shame because it could have been great. I recently purchsed Fox's special editions of "Fantastic Voyage" and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", they are super! I just hope Fox reissues "One Million Years B.C. with the same bells and whistles and with the COMPLETE version!

1 out of 5 stars RUN AWAY (from this version).......2007-05-19

I completely concur with cameron-vale's and shonner's reviews : this version is : 1/ edited and 2/ mutilated at top and bottom of screen to make it look widescreen. Among the edited pieces (I can tell because I have both DVDs, though I do plan to get rid of this one...) : Tumak's erring through the desert ; the feast/dance/ceremony at the tribe's cave ; the fight between two apemen and impaling of the loser's skull ; and quite a lot of isolated shots either shortened or deleted. Worse (if at all possible) : top and bottom of screen missing entirely, which is made all the worse yet by the bonus about the restoration process, that compares an admittedly badly scratched but full screen 1993 film version with the truncated 1996 laserdisc version used for this DVD (as regards the 2002 "restored film version" and "restored video version", I can see absolutely no difference between the two). And to make things complete and irrevocable, there is a bad technical problem : on my player and projector at least, I keep getting blurred lines every couple of frames (every time someone moves, actually...). What is "better" about this version, then ? Well, maybe the fact that you get a couple more languages and a lot of subtitles for the 3 or 4 only sentences of the film (at the very beginning) - including the "English for hearing impaired" that is actually quite fun : "HISSES", "ROAR", that kind of thing all the time ! Or the short demonstration of the restoration process (including its shortcomings, then...). This stops mighty short of being worth the buy. So sorry for the extra bucks, folks, but if you do plan to buy this film (if, like me, you are a Ray Harryhausen fan, for instance, and want to own every picture he ever made - which is now possible at relatively low cost -), go by all means for the British version on amazon.co.uk while it lasts, I promise it's worth every extra penny.

3 out of 5 stars Raquel Welsh 1 Million A.D........2007-03-19

Before Tanya Roberts wore loin cloth in "Sheena" 1984 there was Raquel Welsh and the only thing worth remembering in this picture is Raquel Welsh. There is nothing else. You will not learn any sociological aspects on primitive man like you would from watching "Quest For Fire" 1981 nor will you enjoy the special effects because they suck. "Jason and the Argonauts" 1963 had better effects. Raquel Welsh is the only reason to watch this film. If you are not interested in watching Raquel Welsh than you can watch that other caveman movie starting Ringo Star and Barbara Bach.

5 out of 5 stars Don't listen to people who complain about the DVD. just buy it. it's good.......2007-02-13

Although european vversion is longer, but it's a very good release at cost of 5 dollars. It's a dual-layer DVD with good quality, 2 trailers and 10 exciting previws. movie itself is awsome. It's not a B movie. It's one of the best science/fiction classics I've ever seen!

Mel Brooks's 1981, three-part comedy--set in the Stone Age, the Roman Empire, and the French Revolution--is pure guilty pleasure. Narrated by Orson Welles and featuring a lot of famous faces in guest appearances (beyond the official cast), the film opens well with Sid Caesar playing a caveman, then moves along to the unlikely but somehow hilarious juxtaposition of Caesar's soldiers (the other Caesar, not Sid) with pot humor, and ends on a dumb-funny note in the French bloodbath. This is a take-it-or-leave-it movie, and it works best if you're in a take-it-or-leave-it mood. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not one of Mel Brook's best but still funny and entertaining........2007-06-08

An anthology of three generations through time from the dawn of man, to the time of Moses (Mel Brooks) to the Roman empire with the story of Julia Caesar (Dom DeLuise) and Christ (John Hurt) to the Spanish Inquisition and finally the French Revolution with King Louis XVI (Mel Brooks).

Highly entertaining and funny parody of history and the bible that has some of the charm of Mel Brooks but it's not as good as his "Young Frankenstein", "Blazing Saddles", "Spaceballs", "The Producers" or even "Robin Hood: Men In Tights". There is a good supporting cast such as Madeline Khan, Sid Caesar, Jackie Mason, Gregory Hines, Cloris Leachman, Harvey Korman and narrated by Orson Welles with Mel Brooks playing multiple roles, the real showstopper of the movie is the funny musical number called "The Spanish Inquisition".

The DVD has excellent picture and sound with one extra that is a trailer, still it's a must have if you like Mel Brooks.

4 out of 5 stars Mel Brooks at his best!.......2007-05-27

I recently bought this film remembering the funny moments such as "run with mucus" and "ping pong" also "the Inquisition" and especally the "roman red" scene oh this was hilarious in its day. but alas, as we get older this just doesn't seem as funny as it used to. however, if you haven't seen this then you might want to have a needle and thread near you while watching it in case you split your sides because this is comedy at its old days best! from the dawn of man, through the roman empire, and even into space! this fantasy/comedy will delight all those age 17+ perhaps even a little younger as this might seem quite a bit more tame by todays standards. there are a few comments/scenes in this I really wouldn't want kids to hear/see other then that its a really funny film.
lost a star because some of the jokes may seem a bit dated. 4 stars
mel brooks should have made a sequel.

5 out of 5 stars Still as funny as it was 20-something years ago.......2007-05-14

Mel Brooks has been one of the greats in comedy for decades--if you're looking for pure comic entertainment, don't miss this film! I only wish he had actually made [might make?] a "History of the World, Part II."

3 out of 5 stars Funny, but I probably wouldn't watch it twice.......2007-05-10

I bought this not long ago. I thought it would be one of those comical movies I could watch over and over when nothing good was on TV. It was amusing, but, I couldn't sit down and watch it again. It's one of those "Napoleon Dynamite" movies, you either love it or hate it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the classic iced caveman film...........2007-07-03

...this has to be one of the best 'caveman' films ever made. it has dated in a few places - notably 'computer game' entertainment (but hey it is set in a base in antartica, maybe they're a bit behind!!) but otherwise it stands up very solidly. Fred Schepisi directs it incredibly well with awesum photography and pace. The real win is Hutton and Lone - their performances are (i think) the best of both their careers! John Lone's make up is on the Neandertal side of cro magnon but realistic and captivating, only enhancing an electric performance. Timothy Hutton is brilliant as the misunderstood anthropologist and the cast around them is outstanding.
Overall a great example of what to expect should we ever discover an iced caveman: scientific arguements, trivial executive powerplays, moral ethics vs medical ethics, privacy abuses, and political/social mindgames! very reminiscent of the situation with Otzi the 'real iceman' whos frozen body was found in the swiss/french Alps.
A thought provoking film that hits its target - i recommend for all interested in our paleo history and our regression as a forward thinking civilization. top marks.

3 out of 5 stars Good Flick, worth the purchase!.......2007-03-12

Like many other reviewers, I saw this movie a long time ago, and remembered liking it. So for various reasons that I will not bore you with, I purchased it recently, and was not disappointed. Although the movie actually has less happening in it than I remember (meaning less events), it was surprisingly much more powerful, and much more heart-wrenchingly-sad for me this time around (or perhaps I got more sentimental as I have aged- gasp! ;-).

For many (but not all) people under 25 (the generation that I feel is mainly into special effects, and constant action (be it sexual or violent), and has less appreciation for good dialogue, acting, and plot), this movie may move too slow at times, have too little happening, and will consequently probably have them bored by the end of the movie. However if you are not in the category I mentioned above, and you have a heart that can actually feel empathy for others, and you like something that is thought provoking...If you like a film that will probably get you to reflect on modern and ancient humans, the evolution of religious beliefs, human psychology, human rights, and other deep topics, than this movie, (although it is by no means in the same league with movies like Casablanca) is a good film, and definitely worth the purchase! ...Compliments for the man who played the Iceman- great character acting!

5 out of 5 stars A Good, Honest Film.......2006-12-14

I remember watching this movie somewhere back in the early 90s on free television, when I was around 12 ("Iceman" came out when I was only 3). I thoroughly enjoyed the film then, and, even as young as I was, I was able to comprehend the meaning of the film. When I grew older, I was elated to find the movie was released on DVD. It is in my top 10 movies of all time. This is not to say it is the best movie ever; it is just one of my personal favorites. "Iceman" doesn't care about fancy special effects or all the other traps that big-budget Hollywood movies are littered with. This is one of those films that you watch when you just want to relax and enjoy a good, honest movie with some substance and some good dialogue.

Despite a few plot holes here and there, this movie is about one thing: Mans introspective search for understanding our origins. Any movie that explores that in any capacity gets a nod from me.

True, you only get the movie on this release. There are no bonus features or menus of any kind, but I believe a review should be based mainly on how good the film is or isn't. With that said, let's hope they release a special version in the near future.

1 out of 5 stars This DVD is in Pan & Scan not Widescreen.......2006-11-30

A very good story and movie. Ruined by releasing it in Pan & Scan. I ordered it but did not notice the
version was the chopped up "full screen" version. I won't even bother to send it back. It goes in the trash along
with any movie that is not in it's original, uncut, widescreen format. What a waste of a good movie.

5 out of 5 stars iceman.......2006-03-10

very good movie to view and deals with alot of emotions on the treatment of a human being no mater what time period he came from. if you care for people and understand what the scientists were trying to do to help further science to help mankind.

you must remember a human being has rights in a modern society that has passed through alot of history of abuses of thouse rights. case point adolf hitler and the jewish people. there are always concequences for what society or one goverment thinks is for the betterment of man kind. this movie brings you to that point where it shows hes more human instead of a gini pig.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable .......2007-04-30

These two movies are pleasant enough, if not especially demanding (or rewarding). What's easy to forget about low-budget Roger Corman movies like this, is the degree to which the actors really played them straight. There's little hamming it up or winking at the camera. In his better movies, like "The Wasp Woman," you can find yourself falling for the quite silly storyline just through the presence of the actors, and the straight faces they manage to keep. (This is less true for his semi-humorous movies, like "Creature from the Haunted Sea" or "Little Shop of Horrors"...)

Anyway, both these movies are pretty fun. Viking Women tells the story of--you guessed it--a bunch of Viking women, who go off in search of their men who left home some time back. There's a nice performance by Susan Cabot, and a brief appearance by a sea serpent. Teenage Cave Man was surprisingly engaging, featuring another slew of committed performances and some mildly convincing cave-dwelling hocus-pocus. There's also some lifted footage from, I think, One Million B.C. (1940), and a nameless monster Who Kills With His Touch. Neither of these films will strain your brain cells much, but neither will they numb your patience, and they's make a fun double feature for a weekend afternoon or evening.

The quality of picture for both is excellent, better than I would have expected for such old movies.

3 out of 5 stars Robert Vaughn as a caveman..... priceless.......2006-08-30

Tennage caveman:
Robert Vaughn as a caveman.... just this is worth the price of
admission. Our Man from Uncle is running around the prehistoric
times looking for answers. This is not a bad movie...i actually
found myself enjoying this film. Love those 1950's haircuts and
most of the men all clean shaved. And the best part...there is a
story.

3 out of 5 stars Low-Budget Twin Bill From the 50s........2006-05-26

Roger Corman has said that he never made a film that didn't turn a profit. Since he spent only slightly more money on his movies than Ed Wood, and had access to hundreds of screens all over North America, you can be sure that his statement was "right on the money" ! His movies were aimed at a youth audience, pulled into theatres by memorable posters that often promised more thrills than the film delivered. At the same time, most of his films provided good, cheesy fun, and a number of talented people got their start in motion pictures by working for Mr. Corman (hello Jack Nicholson).

Both of the movies on this DVD fall into that "so bad they're good" category. I guess I'm one of those baby boomers who sometimes gets a kick out of the "ouevre" of Roger Corman, Bert Gordon and--yes--even the infamous Ed Wood ! Each film runs slightly more than an hour--is full screen, black and white with mono sound. I had no problems with the quality, but extras are scant--comments from Mr. Corman would have been a nice touch.

"The Saga of the Viking Women and their Voyage to the Waters of the Great Sea Serpent"--whew ! What a title ! For obvious reasons, it was usually referred to as "Viking Women versus the Sea Serpent" or something similar. Released in 1957, a number of Viking women--mostly models in short skirts--set sail to find their missing men. The leader of the group--nubile, Barbie-like Abby Dalton--is anxious to be reunited with her "betrothed". However, one of her "shipmates", who seems to have mystical powers (she talks to "Odin" a lot), also covets the same man--this nasty woman is played by Susan Cabot, soon to graduate to the leading role in Mr. Corman's "The Wasp Woman"--in terms of acting, Ms. Cabot steals this movie, although she has very little "competition" !

After battling through a storm, and narrowly escaping the clutches of the titular Sea Serpent (don't get your hopes too high--this is no Ray Harryhausen picture !), our heroines crash-land on a shore where barbarians are waiting to enslave them. By sheer coincidence, these barbarians--led by sneering Richard Devon--are also holding the missing Viking men prisoner, including Ms. Dalton's fiancee ( Brad Jackson, a hunky, blond, vacant Troy Donahue type). Can these plucky Viking women help their men escape, and return to their homeland ? Do Sea Serpents have teeth ? !

"Teenage Caveman" could be seen in theatres in 1958, and stars Robert Vaughn in the title role--is it churlish to suggest that Mr. Vaughn was a shade too "mature" for this role ? With Mr. Vaughn's subsequent success in "A" films and particularly television, "Caveman" is unlikely to be prominently featured on his resume. He plays a rebellious caveman who wishes to explore the "forbidden" zone. The village elders are not amused--to disobey the "law" means death ! Of course, this movie would be even shorter if his curiousity didn't get the better of him. His adventures result in encounters with quick sand, and some of the phoniest-looking monsters you are ever likely to see--stock-footage from movies like the 1940 version of "One Million Years BC" is shamelessly shown on a rear projection screen behind Mr. Vaughn and his friends. There is a love interest--blond starlet, Darah Marshall, quite fetching in an animal-skin outfit, gives our hero "knowing looks". She also has a skinny-dip scene--guys--don't get too excited ! After about an hour of unintentionally funny dialogue and situations, we have a "surprise" ending that actually surprises no viewer who has actually been paying attention.

Bottom line--even with low budget sets, special effects, actors etc., both films can still be a lot of fun, if you are in the mood to be "exploited"--again--by the truly unique Roger Corman !

3 out of 5 stars Corman Double Feature.......2006-05-09

When I see these double features I often wonder what the link between the two films is. Certainly Roger Corman has created countless films so why were these two put together? Both have a sense of defying authority and exploration. But I feel the real link is that each film has some great danes that pursue the heroes.

In the first film we meet a group of Viking women who have been alone since their menfolk disappeared some time ago. Some what to go and search while others want to stay. A vote results in them setting out on the search. But a great sea monster destroys their boat and strands them in a hostile land. There the woman are made captive and find the surviving men of their clan. Can they escape? If they do can they get past the sea monster? You will have to watch the film to find out the answers.

In the second film Robert Vaughn is a teenager with a lot of questions. His clan lives in a cave and follow a strict law that forbids them from journeying anywhere even though the surrounding land appear more fertile than their own. When Vaughn convinces some other youths to cross the forbidden river, a power struggle ensues in the clan. Should Vaughn be killed for breaking the law? What will the gods say? What about the God Who Kills With a Touch? Vaughn remains rebellious and knows that things could be much better for his people if they are not shackled by the law.

Both films are in black and white. Both involve a lot of cave scenes. Teenage Caveman has more monsters, creatures and effects. Both have beautiful women in scanty outfits. Both have mediocre acting. Teenage Caveman even has a clip from She Creature. In other words, they are very typical of early Corman. If you like Roger Corman, you will like these. The two go well together and make a decent double-feature. Check them out.

Samuel L. Jackson gives a virtuoso performance in this intensely visual suspense film. Jackson stars as Romulus Ledbetter, a brilliant musician whose mental demons have driven him onto the streets. When Ledbetter finds a murdered man outside the cave he calls home one morning, he is compelled to find the real killer. While interesting enough to hold the viewer's attention, the mystery of The Caveman's Valentine is a distant third to Jackson's performance and the film's sumptuous visuals. The film is gorgeously shot, and lights and abstract images are effectively used to show Romulus's beautiful but tormented inner world. While the plot does take a silly leap of logic or two, Romulus's illness and the strain it puts on his family are sensitively and realistically handled. His all-too-real run-ins with his policewoman daughter are nicely contrasted with his visions of his ex-wife, who serves as a combination of Greek chorus and muse. If one is willing to suspend a little disbelief here and there, this picture is well worth a look. --Ali Davis

3 out of 5 stars The Strength of Great Actors vs, So-So Material.......2006-01-09

I have seen this film many times over the years and my opinion of it hasn't changed much. Kasi Lemmons is a very interesting director, she has a nice visual flair as evidenced also with Eve's Bayou, she seems to have incorporated elements of Black Theatre into this piece with the Moth Seraphs and their dances.

Samuel L. Jackson is completely at his best, and once again shows why he is a huge mainstream movie star. His portrayal of Romulus Ledbetter is very much Sam Jack, but he does some amazing things with this character with such small nuances as his disoriented walk much like what Ralph Fiennes did in Cronenberg's Spider (for those who have seen that), in fact this is the kind of story I could see David Cronenberg tackling, but alas this film suffers from what I call a conventional ending, and has too many cliche plot twists for me that in the end it almost comes off as an above average prime time television show along the lines of CSI or even a made-for-television film.

I do recommend seeing this for Lemmons direction, and Jackson's awesome performance. Any young actor can learn a thing or two.

1 out of 5 stars Worst performance.......2005-12-27

I am a genuine fan of Samuel Jackson - his recent fims such as Coach Carter and In my Country have proved his undoubted versatility as an actor. So what on earth induced him to get involved in such a trashy film - and to allow himself to be directed in such a way. His acting is atrocious, as is the rest of the film - feeble script, dismal cinematography and a complete bore. Sorry, but this had to be said !

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!.......2004-10-04

This is perhaps one of the most underestimated films of all time. I don't see how this film went totally unnoticed by pretty much everyone. Samuel L. Jackson gives THE best performance of his career as Romulus Ledbetter - second only to Jules Winnfield in "Pulp Fiction". Kasi Lemmons proves once again that she's an excellent director, who strangely hasn't directed anything since this. The music by Terence Blanchard is also excellent. The cinematography is BEAUTIFUL. Everything about this film is excellent, although your suspension of disbelief will come in handy every now and again.

Totally recommended!

4 out of 5 stars A good adaptation of the book.......2004-05-01

There were many things missing or different from the book, but what movie adaptation is perfect?... Samuel L. Jackson was wonderful as Romulus, and the story made a good movie. If you enjoy the movie, you should pick up the George Dawes Green book -- same author as The Juror, also adapted into a movie starring Demi Moore and Alec Baldwin.
Also, on the DVD's "Deleted Scenes" section there is a WONDERFULLY choreographed scene with Rom's "moth-seraphs" which is just amazingly beautiful to watch! It's too bad they cut it from the movie, but be sure to take it in when you're going through the Bonus Features.

4 out of 5 stars Hidden gem!.......2004-01-14

I got this movie just because of Samuel Jackson. It turned out to be a great movie. On the one hand, it's a very decent thriller, on the other hand, it's a good psychological drama. The story of homeless man witnessing a murder is not the most original but the movie makes it fresh by very good character development. Having said this, the thriller part of the movie is not perfect. There are certain aspects of it that could be done better or plot sometimes could be more logical. But still the overall approach to the movie, its atmsosphere and great Samuel Jackson play make this movie worth watching.

2 out of 5 stars Quite a coin flip.......2007-01-20

Teenage Caveman has an interesting and creative premise. Basically, some primitive, cave-dwelling teens stumble into some futuristic city. They adapt well (with little culture shock) alongside their two new friends. It starts to unfold as a cool sexual quest.
Alas, it goes a different direction, and the inexplicable downfall begins. The idea is intriguing, a sexually-transmitted disease that will make you explode instantly or let you live forever. It's a coin flip.
Here's where the plot gets incongruous. The invincible people suddenly become vulnerable for no apparent reason. Or maybe I missed it. It didn't make sense.
The people infected turn into these monstrous beasts and get destroyed. Oh well, at least thet didn't explode immediately after sex. You'll need at least a six-pack with this movie, it could have been better.

1 out of 5 stars HELLO! Larry Clark always sucked!.......2006-10-17

so of course this is going to blow salty bollocks, I bet you that every larry clark movie that will ever come out will suck salty bollocks! Besides, that sarah chick doesnt get naked enough in this one :)

1 out of 5 stars God Awful.......2006-03-26

This is one abysmal, pathetically boring film. In it a tribe of "teenage cavemen" discover a few monstrous hedonists living with modern conveniences. They are taken in by it all, a girl explodes while fondling herself, people turn into rubber monsters, etc. Other than this, the film really has no plot. Unjaded viewers might find the film offensive or shocking -- jaded viewers however will simply take it as further evidence that LARRY CLARK IS A PEDOPHILE!! Some people think his movies are bold. I do not. Bold films have points to them. Sorry Larry.

3 out of 5 stars With Power Comes Silly Hairstyles.......2006-03-05

Another of the Creature Feature movies that takes old movies and comes up with a new plot for the old title. This one concerns the primitive living conditions of the human survivors after civilization is destroyed by violent storms. Despite the harsh conditions and the struggle to survive, the teenagers seem to have plenty of leisure time to plan rebellion and break the rules. After one altercation a small band of teens heads out into the wilderness and discover the remains of a city. Suddenly they find themselves guests of a strange pair of teens who seem to have all of the power and resources they need.

The leader of the strange teens, sporting a silly-looking top-knot, seduces the group with music, food, technology and comfort. Later, he and the female of the pair also seduce the group with sex. It is after the orgy that the viewer starts to get an idea of what is going on and what secrets are being kept. This is a horror movie, so people start dying for various reasons until the inevitable final struggle. Then we have a new leader emerge who also decides to suddenly sport the silly-looking top-knot. A final scene helps to tie up the loose ands and leaves the view wondering what will happen next to the characters.

I have watched all of the Creature Feature films and this is the worst. Really bad acting combines with a poorly written script and almost nonexistent special effects. Plenty of nudity and sex are thrown in but it all just results in a silly mess. If seeing a bunch of teens being wild, silly and uncontrolled is your bag then you might be interested in this one. Otherwise you will probably want to pass this one by.

2 out of 5 stars The Real Larry Clark reveals himself..........2006-02-28

Don't expect good horror or sci-fi here as Larry Clark concentrates primarily on sex scenes. For years he's made sleazy films like Kids and Bully under the guise of teaching people a lesson about the youth of today. With no moral lessions to hide behind in Teenage Caveman it's crystal clear what REALLY intersts Clark the most. This movie may appeal to some in a guilty pleasure way but the "plot" padded out with sleaze is awful.

    Product Description

Do you think instructional quilting videos are boring? Not this one! Quilting Caveman Style and Fishin (Workshop #1), is the first in a series of entertaining video workshops produced by Ricky Tims. This DVD/VHS features one of his most requested classes and demonstrates how easy and enjoyable Caveman Quilting can be. The video opens with Ricky taking a leisurely fishing trip at Echo Lake in Colorado. For some unexplainable reason the fish arent biting. Ricky decides to make better use of his time by combining his angling efforts with a bit of quilt instruction. Ricky and his alter ego, Caveman Tex, take you on a quilting journey back in time where rulers, templates and quarter inch seams are still in the future. You will learn how to cut and sew gentle, undulating curves (without pinning), by making a small tulip-like wall quilt called Chantelle. Quilters are then encouraged to use the Caveman technique to create their own improvisational quilts. In addition to the instructional chapters, a gallery of Rickys Caveman style quilts demonstrates the variety of ways in which this free-style technique can be utilized. This whimsical, step-by-step presentation lays aside traditional techniques and explores a new alternative quilting method. The video includes animation and original music composed and performed by Ricky. The DVD offers bonus features such as a Chapter Menu for quick navigation and a Music Menu which plays music selections only. Great effort was made during production to show intricate sewing details from Rickys point of view. The camera is placed in such a way that the viewer actually sees what Ricky sees, without having to view techniques and demonstrations upside down. Close-up shots enable quilters to explicitly see the minutest details.
