A married man, left alone during a hot summer, fantasizes madly about the impossibly gorgeous woman living in the upstairs apartment. When the woman is Marilyn Monroe, such fantasies are the stuff of epics, and The Seven Year Itch is a memorable laugh machine. Tom Ewell, repeating his role from George Axelrod's Broadway hit, plays the itchy protagonist, whose vivid imagination gets the better of him. When Monroe finally comes downstairs and becomes friends (confiding, among other things, that she keeps her undies in the icebox in this hot weather), imagination meets reality in a merciless attack on the male libido. Ewell's crack timing is matched by Monroe's zesty comic flair, and the scene in which her white dress is blown skyward by a passing subway train has entered the encyclopedia of great movie images. Director Billy Wilder adapted the play with Axelrod; if the film is not one of Wilder's signature works (Some Like It Hot and The Apartment would soon follow), it is nevertheless a smoothly crafted comedy. --Robert Horton

The "backstory" is the wrongstory.......2006-12-11
The movie commentary on the disc couldn't be more off-base. Comments by
self congratulatory "film critics" (Thanks Hugh Hefner) on the repressive
nature of the film board of the times belies the fact that this is a great
movie and the fact that despite the death of censership, a better movie of this
type (or a remake) has never been made. It's the restraint that gives the
movie its intensity and romantic appeal. Making a commentary on this movie
that simply critisizes censership does not do this movie justice.
Mmmmmm Marilyn!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-12-04
movie is kind of boring and tedious. only the sight of MM makes it exciting. but get it to see the legend at her sexiest, cutest, most edible, luscious best!!!!!!!!!!!!! she is very beautiful in it. she should have really tried to stay looking this way. wow, what a persona/personality!!!!!!!! each word she says, move she makes is fascinating. she operates like no other woman, and no other woman operates like her!! lol. she is my idol!!
Not Wilder's (or Monroe's) Best.......2006-11-09
"The Seven Year Itch" is a movie directed by legendary director Billy Wilder, that is probably the 2nd most famous Marilyn Monroe film behind "Some Like It Hot" (also directed by Wilder). The Seven Year Itch has been cited as one of Monroe's most enjoyable films and I enjoyed it to a certain extent, although it's far from a perfect film. The movie is about a man named Richard, who's wife and son go on vacation for the summer leaving Richard home all alone. Since it seems common practice for people to do this, Richard watches as his friends take advantage of the absence of their wives and drink and smoke, etcetera. Richard, himself, is a little bit neurotic and very paranoid so he tries his best to avoid doing things like that. That is until, fate steps in; It steps in, in the form of a tomato plant that smashes his lawn chair. It falls from the new tenant's window and the new tenant takes Richard aback. It's a beautiful woman, whom he learns is named The Girl (Monroe, who looks stunning). After some flirtation, he invites her down for a drink only to be consumed by the fear of the fact that he could be seen by his wife or someone else. When The Girl comes down, they drink and mess around; But Richard can't escape that nagging fear. When he goes to work, he learns of something called The Seven Year Itch. This is something that a man who has been married for seven years (Richard has) experiences for women around him. That's almost the entire movie summed up. Out of the other Wilder films I've seen (Double Indemnity, Some Like It Hot, and Sunset Boulevard) this is without a doubt, my least favorite. The charm of certain actors, notably Monroe, can only carry a film so far. I found this movie charming, don't get me wrong, and it also had some humor and it was entertaining for the most part. But some scenes I found dull and wishing that they would end. This movie does, technically, feature one of the most famous scenes in movie history. This is, of course, the scene where Monroe's skirt is lifted up and she nervously pushes it back down. This scene, at least in this film, doesn't exist. Wind from a subway is blown up her dress, but we don't see it flying up or pushing it down. We see her kneecaps and the dress going up and then being pressed back down. Maybe it was just my copy (mine's an older one), but I didn't see it. Anyway, bottom line; Enjoyable movie, but no masterpiece.

The untiring blaze of seduction!.......2006-10-14
Wilder played hard with this delicious comedy, around a simple man who literally will become the most desired male sex symbol.
This movie is not only the most Fellinian of Wilder' s career; in its challenging proposal anticipated in twenty years to Woody Allen; its mordacious dialogues and suggestive homage to "From here to the eternity" focuses with delirious humor the collective unconscious around the eternal sex symbol per excellence; the mighty Aphrodite Marilyn Monroe in the most reminded and erotic scene of the movie, that would influence the well reminded remake "The woman in red."
Tantalizing, mesmerizing, funny, cynical and enjoyable film that enhances with the years as the good wine.
very bad and pretentious movie.......2006-09-19
the screenplay was so bad that almost drove me crazy. like watching a badly directed drama on the stage, that guy kept talking to himself, tried to convey those no-big-deal thoughts. those monologues should never put into a movie but on a theatre's stage. monroe was specially pretentious under the guidance of billy wilder who, at that time was very good, but now all of his works are so difficult to be absorbed as good movies. almost every scene looked like a scene grabbed from a broadway show, so pretentious and so shallow. if this was a musical i might be able to stand it better.

Marilyn Monroe.......2007-01-10
While this set doesn't have all the Marilyn Monroe movies, it is a good set to have. Marilyn is beautiful in all of the enclosed movies. She acted various parts and did so in different ways. This set is a good start for anyone beginning a Monroe collection!
Marilyn Monroe Special Anniversary Collection.......2007-01-10
I bought this DVD set for my father for his birthday. He just turned 83 years old and he absolutely have always adored Marilyn Monroe and he was so thrilled when he got the set and he said the color on the DVD cover was absolutely beautiful and he (my parents and I are deaf) was happy that the movies was subtitled and he was able to fully understand everything which in back of old days, the movies were not captioned and he would just guess what the stories were about but now he does not have to play guess anymore.
Marilyn Monroe at her best.......2007-01-09
I bought this as a gift for my 15 year old neice! Marilyn is at her best in these classics! She never goes out of style! I would recommend this set to any one that either wanted to start collecting all of her movies or just the best ones.
I love this lady!.......2007-01-03
great movies!. I think she made a great suductress, also she has an awesome body, not a twig like the ladies of today.
More features.......2006-12-13
While the films are a great choice and the prints are in great shape, how about some commentaries, deleted scenes, featurettes. Except for SEVEN YEAR ITCH, there is nothing. Marilyn made so few films, only 12 starring roles, as compared to other superstars who've made dozens, I wish there were more to each movie...expecially deleted scenes. I know every one of these film had deletions, but no one has ever said WHAT WAS DELETED. In the case of NIAGARA, much must have been deleted because it seems so choppy. Never sure what day is when. In BLONDES, the first part of the movie also seems a bit disjointed, and one night moves into the next without explanation. I know Mr. Zanack was a stickler for short films and he cut his films a bit too much. So when and if new materials are found and put in these films, I won't be buying any more of them.

The Diamond Collection consists of five Marilyn Monroe films plus the documentary The Final Days. Bus Stop (1956) stars Monroe as a singer who finds herself trapped at a bus stop in the middle of nowhere during a blizzard. How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) was built around a trio of female stars, Monroe, Lauren Bacall, and Betty Grable, who play friends who come up with a plan to find and marry rich men. Monroe plays an ambitious showgirl in 1954's There's No Business Like Show Business, which brings together two giants of Broadway, Ethel Merman and Irving Berlin, to celebrate the glories that were vaudeville. Howard Hawks's 1953 musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes stars Monroe and Jane Russell as friends who go to Paris looking for mates. The film is charged by Hawks's stylish snap, a famous set piece or two (including Monroe descending that staircase while singing "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend"), Russell's wit, and songs by Leo Robin and Jule Styne. The Seven Year Itch (1955) is a memorable laugh machine. As a married man left alone during a hot summer, Tom Ewell shows off crack timing matched by Monroe's zesty comic flair, and the scene in which her white dress is blown skyward by a passing subway train has entered the encyclopedia of great movie images.
In The Final Days, producer-director Patty Ivins chronicles Monroe's final, aborted feature film, Something's Got to Give, which was ultimately shut down after the star was dismissed from the production. Beyond Monroe's fragile emotional and physical health, this well-crafted profile examines the financial crisis facing her studio as well as the mounting frustration of meticulous director George Cukor and his cast, including costar Dean Martin, as Monroe's absences drove the shoot over budget. The documentary concludes with a 40-minute reconstruction of footage completed for the feature, which would subsequently be reshot as a vehicle for Doris Day and James Garner, Move Over, Darling.

The Diamond Collection represents some of Marilyn Monroe's greatest achievements on film! This first installation of the Diamond Collection certainly contains her most well-known films, and is a must have for Marilyn fans.
Within this collection are the titles "Bus Stop" -- "How to Marry a Millionaire" -- "There's No Business Like Show Business" -- "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" -- "The Seven Year Itch" -- and a documentary chronicling the final days of Marilyn Monroe.
My favorite Marilyn film is the one that saw her star rise, and that's "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". Her infamous musical number 'Diamonds are a girls best friend' is found within this film. During Marilyn's era in the film industry, almost ALL actors contracted to the different studios were required to not only be able to act, but to be able to dance and sing as well. Marilyn's singing voice wasn't strong, but it still had a beautifully hypnotic lilt to it, and made her unique in this respect.
"The Seven Year Itch" contains her infamous grater scene in which a gust of wind blows up her white skirt, thus creating a fabulous moment in cinematic history. According to witnesses, the director of the film had to ask Marilyn to wear two pairs of undergarments because the camera was picking up the fact that she was *not* a natural blonde.
There are far too many memorable Marilyn moments to list them all, but I highly recommend this collection of DVDs. In addition to the five Marilyn films included in the set, there is an added bonus of a documentary titled "The Final Days" in which it chronicles -- what else -- the final days of Ms. Monroe. This documentary also pieces together the fragmented footage of the film "Somethings Got to Give", which Marilyn was in the process of shooting at the time of her tragic death. Included in this footage is the skinny-dipping scene Marilyn had completed, which would have certainly become just as infamous has many of her other scenes.
My only regret is that Marilyn films from other studios, such as the charismatic "Some Like it Hot", or even the Olivier production of "The Prince and the Showgirl", could not be included in either installments of the Diamond Collection.
I simply can't say it enough, this is a wonderful collection, and a great tribute to the loving memory of Marilyn Monroe.
Great Gift!.......2007-03-21
I got this for my other half for chrismas. It was a big hit. A perfect gift for any Monroe fan that does not have it yet.
She really was "A Candle in the Wind".......2006-02-27
This collection of films is a must-have for fans of Marilyn Monroe. The tragic ending to her life is forgotten while the watcher is mesmerized by her overwhelming stage presence that outshines everyone else on the screen. Her characters always portray an innocence that shines through her sexual magnetism. What never comes through in her performances is her own troubled life. In Bus Stop, she has a southern accent and, for once, isn't playing herself. How to Marry a Millionaire is filled with great stars of the past--Lauren Bacall, Betty Grable and William Powell, as well as Marilyn Monroe. The story has never lost its humor and charm. There's No Business like Show Business is the story of a vaudeville family, and Marilyn doesn't enter the picture immediately. Here, we are bowled over by the magnificent stage presence of Ethel Merman, who manages to put everyone else in the shade--including Mitzi Gaynor, Donald O'Connor and Marilyn. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes remains such a fun story with Russell and Monroe paired up in some wonderful mixups. There are some fabulous musical numbers, most notably "Ain't There Anyone Her for Love?" and "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend." The Seven Year Itch, while perhaps toned down for the censors of the time is funny and unforgettable.
Great box set to have in collection.......2006-02-23
This is a great box set to add to any collection. The movies are all in widescreen so you aren't missing any of the orginal picture. I would recommend purchasing to any fan of Marilyn Monroe movies. I would also recommend purchasing to someone who hasn't seen any of Marilyn's movies.
Best Collection ever!!.......2005-12-31
I looked from heaven to hell for this and only found it here on amazon.com. It was well worth the searching, Marilyn is awsome!!

A GIANT WASTE.......2007-02-28
Having been an avid fan for over twenty years, when I saw this set list I was absolutely thrilled. I couldn't wait for it to be released. There are several amazing b-sides(a usual treat from them for fans like myself), and it even has my favorite track, "Land's End." It's a small relief that the track is the ONLY ONE on the whole DVD that is remotely listenable. Siouxsie, I honor you always, but your vocal is off key the ENTIRE SHOW (it's worse when you consider they filmed more than one night), so noticeably that I actually wince watching you trash your back catalog. They brought in the guitarist from the psychedelic furs for the show, and though he does a decent job on the songs, overall no matter how well the band plays Siouxsie's abyssmal vocal destroys all. This DVD comes from a band that was so amazing live in the past it is a tragedy this DVD saw the light of day.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON'T BUY THIS, BUY THE NOCTURNE DVD. Even though the hits you may recoginize are on the seven year itch, you can fully expect to be disappointed. Nocturne shows the band at their masterful best (not to mention having Robert Smith of The Cure on guitar is a plus, and the extras on that are excellent).
The only thing worth watching the DVD for is Budgie goofing around backstage.
Can I give it no star? Note also the audio CD sound quality is inferior to the DVD, it's like they got nothing right but the packaging.
Legends of Punk.......2006-12-01
Whether Siouxsie's hitting or not hitting the notes on the songs... it's still great. It's what makes it punk.
siouxsie - chopped and screwed........2006-06-09
yup, she drops it all an octave and throws in some scratchin'.
gotta love it.
Pleasurable pain........2005-09-15
Here we are, 7 years down the road from the break-up of Siouxsie and the banshees. The journey has been filled with both pleasure and pain, a lot like this DVD. On one hand you have had some of the creatures (siouxsie's home away from the banshees and joint avenue with husband/drummer budgie) best music. On the other hand she has had 7 years of mainly touring, and not singing many banshees tunes in the past 7 years.
The DVD starts out with an almost pointless intro song (pure) of siouxsie ooohing and awwwing. Then the show pics up with a strong performance of Jigsaw feeling, which is pretty well done.
Through out this show, you have your ups and your downs. But one thing we must admit is that Siouxsie's stage presence is strong and almost better then any show ever caught on tape. The years have been kind to her looks, but sadly not her voice. There are the pros of this show such as Metal postcard, icon, red light, night shift, and an amazing cover of the Beatles blue jay way.
One thing is undeniable, Siouxsie is an undying and strong figure and influence in the world of music. The banshees have left a mark on many artist in todays industry, and will continue to make an impact since the 29 years they have been making music unlike any other band.
(Check out 'Siouxsie Dreamshow, which is the new DVD featuring Siouxsie performing over 27 songs from the banshees and the creatures entire catalog with a 50 piece orchestra, with such songs as 2nd floor, Dear prudence, obsession, kiss them for me, godzilla, and lots more. Now available on amazon.co.uk, and soon to be in the U.S.)
I LOVE THE BANSHEES, BUT...........2005-03-17
Man, I was excited to see this DVD. The band is great, the filming is superb, and the performance is brilliant. However, even though it pains me to admit it, Siouxsie's voice almost makes this DVD unwatchable. I spent a great portion watching this DVD with a cringe on my face, as it was obvious that live, Siouxsie is completely tone deaf. I can't believe she could be that far off after singing for so long. This is definately for fans only, I would never show this to someone if I was trying to turn them on to the Banshees.
