Behind the generic title of Boys & Girls lies a surprising enjoyable and nuanced romantic comedy. Teen heartthrob Freddie Prinze Jr. plays Ryan, a dorky, emotionally sincere young guy who keeps crossing paths with Jennifer, played by Claire Forlani, an independent and willfully unattached young woman. Their chance meetings coincide with relationship traumas and they start to confide in each other, which leads to a more genuine friendship and, in the midst of their college years, a romance. It's a bit of a stock plot line to have their friendship threatened by sexual attraction, but Boys & Girls has just enough genuine feeling to make it compelling. Meanwhile, Jason Biggs (from American Pie) plays Ryan's roommate, a compulsive liar and would-be scam artist, who carries off some pretty funny scenes. Forlani and Prinze work together quite well. Their performances hearken back to the classic screwball comedies of the 1930s, with the repressed male simultaneously attracted and horrified by a footloose dame. Some kooky moments are a little strained, but at other times the movie has a refreshing realism about human emotions. Overall, a much more engaging and entertaining flick than its ad campaign suggests. Also featuring Alyson Hannigan from the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Heather Donahue from The Blair Witch Project. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars Had my sons' interest for 2 minutes.......2007-06-30

If I did not sit there with him for the whole 2 minutes he would have left the room. Really really cheesy, not entertaining, annoying to the parent, and well my son would have rather played in dirt.

5 out of 5 stars we have potty power!.......2007-06-29

My 2 1/2 yr old loved this video. It helped us in potty training. She would go to the potty to have potty power! The songs also stick w/the child(& mom too). We would sing "no more diapers for me".Even now after months of being fully trained she still asks to watch this video.
(Worked better than Elmo's potty also). Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and helpful.......2007-06-27

This video is very helpful for potty training an older child. My daughter is 3 and would only occaisonally sit on the potty. And although we are still in the works of potty traing her, this movie has truly motivated her to be a "big kid"!

5 out of 5 stars Worked right away!.......2007-06-18

The very first night my son saw the video, he said " NO MORE DIAPERS". IT has been that way since. He is in the potty and said that he has Potty power. I love the video. Thanks!

Take Animal House, throw in a dose of television's Bosom Buddies and you get the Phoebe Cates/Matthew Modine sex farce Private School. The 1983 film was shot one year after Cates won fame in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (thanks primarily to her little red bikini), and two years before Modine won rave reviews for his work in Vision Quest. While neither star gives a stellar performance in Private School, both are appealing and likeable, even with the ridiculous premise. Chris (Cates) attends an all-girls private school, while horndog Jim (Modine) matriculates at the nearby all-boys school. In order to get close to her, Jim and his friend dress up like girls and befriend Chris and her hot posse. When Chris' sexy rival Jordan (Betsy Russell) tries to woo Jim away by riding a horse, Lady Godiva style, the stage is set for a catfight. Throw in a guest appearance by Sylvia Kristel of Emmanuelle fame and double entendres abound. The soundtrack is full of songs by '80s staples such as Rick Springfield, Vanity Six, and Bow Wow Wow, whose "I Want Candy" is played throughout a peeping shower scene. Though cheesy and intended for teenage boys, the film has an almost innocent charm compared to some of the current fare in theaters. --Jae-Ha Kim

Description

Private School is where kids leave parents behind, and learn what growing up is really about. It's a romantic comedy from the same people who brought you the hilarious Private Lessons. Starring Phoebe Cates, with a special appearance by sensuous Sylvia Kristel as the sex education teacher whose classes are the best attended on campus. Chris Ramsay (Cates) and Jim Green (Matthew Modine) are experiencing the joys and pains of first love. She goes to the Cherryvale Academy-he attends nearby Freemount. When Chris gets a rival for Jim's affections, it sparks off a battle royale of zany pranks that turn both schools upside down with laughter. Private School features a soundtrack of hits from artists like the Stray Cats, Vanity Six, Bow-Wow-Wow and Rick Springfield.

3 out of 5 stars Brings back memories!.......2007-05-30

I received this DVD last night and ordered it because of Phoebe Cates, who I am still in love with! She is such a beautiful woman!

This movie is typical 80's fare, guys chasing women and trying to get some any way they can! That pretty much was a reflection of my own thinking at that time and loved these movies when they came out. Of course, throw in Phoebe Cates and potential skin shots, and I am there!

Realistically, its not that great of a movie, unless you love Phoebe! That's pretty much the only reason I bought this movie!

PS the sound is in MONO! I forgot that few movies were in stereo at that time!

3 out of 5 stars Typical Eighties teen comedy.......2007-05-21

I gave this three stars because it is a typical eighties teen comedy whose most redeeming features are its female cast. The scene with Betsy Russell riding a horse though, is a scene not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A GREAT MOVIE!!!.......2007-05-07

THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES SINCE I WAS A TEENAGER. IT'S ALL ABOUT COLLEGE SEX! GUYS WILL BE GUYS WHEN IT COMES TO SEX! SOME WILL LIE ABOUT WHO THEY HAVE DONE IT WITH JUST TO MAKE THEMSELVES LOOK LIKE STUDS AND OTHERS JUST DON'T LIKE TO TALK ABOUT IT! A BIG BUSTED GIRL TRIES TO BREAK A COUPLE WHO ARE REALLY IN LOVE UP AND MORE HILARIOUS SCENES THAT YOU'LL HAVE TO SEE FOR YOURSELF! I LOVE IT!

4 out of 5 stars Teen madness.......2007-04-11

I found this an amusing movie starring Phoebe Cates. If you like the antics of teenage girls and boys and a weird parent, you might enjoy this movie.

4 out of 5 stars If you love Phoebe Cates..........2007-04-06

...then you will love this movie. I saw this movie when I was a young boy of like 12 or 13 and I've loved it ever sine. I fell in love with Phoebe Cates from this movie and have followed her career from this to Fast Times to the TV Movie, Baby Sister, to Gremlins and to Lace I and Lace II. It's a shame she retired from the business. Thoug she did act in The Anniversary Party with her best friend, Jennifer Jason Leigh and her husband, Kevin Kline and her 2 children Owen and Greta.
So, Private School wasn't a great movie, but it was fun and funny and will always hold a special place in my heart. This along with Zapped and Screwballs (a bad Porky's rip-off) will always hold dear and true to my heart.
Plus, Phoebe Cates sings 2 songs in this movie that are on the Soundtrack, which is hard to find.
All in all, this is a fun movie with lots of gratuitous nudity of young women and Betsy Russell as Jordan almost steals the show, with her bare backing horse scene. Also, for a young Matthew Modine, looking really fine.

3 out of 5 stars Happy Ending.......2007-03-06

I was blown away by Claire Forliani in "Meet Joe Black" and have been waiting for another breakthrough movie for her. Other than a good role in "Bobby Jones, Stroke of Genius" with Jim Caviezel, I'm still looking! I found this one among the older DVDs on the rental store shelves. As Jennifer, Forliani plays a nervous young lady afraid of romantic commitment. She's got such expressive eyes and that glowing smile that seems to radiate kindness on screen. Opposite Freddie Prinze Jr. who had just worked with director Robert Iscove on "She's All That," she does a good job. Prinze plays Ryan, the boy next door looking for a real relationship. While he doesn't read emotionally deep, he lights up the screen with a fun-loving touch. The film bogs down in that it goes through high school and several years of college trying to get these two together. At some point long before they get together, it becomes tedious. The actors do well; so it seems to be a script or directorial failure. Jason Biggs from "American Pie," "There's Something About Mary," & "American Wedding" plays Hunter/Steve, Ryan's roommate who eventually serves as the catalyst for their eventual rendezvous. Heather Donahue from "The Blair Witch Project" plays Ryan's girlfriend Heather. Alyson Hannigan from TV's "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" & "American Pie" plays Ryan's first girlfriend. Amada Detmer who was in "Kiss the Bride," "Final Destination" & "The Magestic" plays Jennifer's roommate who wants to get a bit too close to Jennifer. While this is a sweet romantic story with a happy ending, it seems to take just a bit too long to fire. While this film may not be a life-altering experience, it works fairly well most of the time. Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Worst movie ever.......2005-09-09

Even worse than Wing Commander, yet another craptastic movie starring Freddy Prince Junior. Why does it suck? Well first it stars FPJ, so you know it's gona suck already. Next it just sucks. That's it. The story is boring. Hell I don't even remember what it's about. I saw this movie years ago, and all I remember was that I hated it.

You know a movie sucks when the only thing you remember about it was that you despised it. Avoid at all costs.

4 out of 5 stars When Harry Met Sally for teens.......2004-11-09

Misery loves company. I became addicted to this quirky, somewhat surreal romantic comedy when a long term relationship of mine ended. To watch Freddie Prinze Jr. and Claire Forlani as long-time friends navigate through the minefield of failed relationships and teen angst only to eventually consider getting together themselves seemed like the perfect anecdotal medecine to relieve what I was going through at that time. Yes, it's ultimately a funny and touching drama that taps into that need for comfortable feel good stories to put the sparkle back into life. Really, it bears more than a striking resemblance to WHEN HARRY MET SALLY in both structure and themes. (Is it a surprise they are both favorites of mine).
Ultimately my favorite part of the movie is the first half. The movie starts with a young Ryan and Jennifer meeting for the first time on a plane from New York to Los Angeles. Their encounter remains so memorable that five years later Ryan recognizes Jennifer during a football game. As luck would have it the two also eventually end up both in college at Berkeley and bump into each other in a series of When-Harry-Met-Sally-esque encounters over a number of years.
Prinze definitely plays against type here, he doesn't play a hotshot high school football star but instead Ryan is a difficult, unsure teen attempting to make his way through an engineering degree and Forlani is the confident, assured college girl who has no trouble getting dates, but is unable to maintain any long-term commitment.
Providing possibly his funniest performance is Jason Biggs (of American Pie fame) who plays Ryans college roommate Hunter (well that's not his real name but he feels it sounds better when picking up girls). From his introduction - getting stuck in a storage case to his eventual success in the girl department - his all too rare screen moments provide some great humor and lend a certain charm to the movie giving it an edge over the adult movie that so clearly inspired it.
I've seen this movie numerous times, its one of my guilty pleasures that speaks to me on so many levels.
Incidently if you have seen this movie on television the chances are that you have not seen it all. I have seen "Boys and Girls" shredded to bits on network tv.

5 out of 5 stars Boys and Girls.......2004-10-05

this is the gold of any freddie prinze, jr. collection...its totally a need to buy item...

3 out of 5 stars Freddie Prinze, Jr........2004-04-10

I well remember, and well liked, FP Jr.'s father, and his TV series "Chico and the Man." A while back, I saw FP, Jr. being interviewed on a talk show, and I thought he came across as so down-to-earth, charming, and cute as can be. But I was totally unfamiliar with his work as an actor.

I finally got around to renting this movie, and thought it was very enjoyable. Similar to "When Harry Met Sally....," but of course no where nearly as great as that classic, superlative film. But still quite pleasant. Leonard Maltin, with whom I usually agree, rated this movie BOMB -- he is absolutely, unequivocally WRONG.

However, after renting ths movie, I did rent FP, Jr.'s "She's All That," and "Head Over Heels." Maltin liked those movies better than "Boys and Girls," but again, he is WRONG -- those two were the bombs, unfortunately. In fact, despite FP, Jr.'s enjoyable screen presence, they were virtually unwatchable.

"Boys and Girls" is a lovely movie (a bit of a weak performance by Forlani was a bit of a drawback, but the rest of the cast was very good, and so was the writing, and the direction).

I feel certain you will enjoy the lovely "Boys and Girls."

When Odette (Gaby Hoffman) gets kicked out of her coed school for plotting to lose her virginity (All I Wanna Do is set in 1963), her parents send her to Miss Godard's Preparatory School, an all-girls school that tries to instill independence in its students. Her roommates turn out to be the school's troublemakers--Verena (Kirsten Dunst), Tinka (Monica Keena), and their friends Tweety (Heather Matarazzo) and Momo (Merritt Weaver). Though Odette initially resists (not because she wants to stick to the rules, but because she hates the whole school so much she won't even join the rebels), she gradually becomes part of the rambunctious circle. Due to financial trouble, the school's trustees decide to merge with a nearby boys' academy, despite the furious protests of Miss Godard's headmistress (Lynn Redgrave). Verena echoes the headmistress's sentiments and launches an offensive of pranks to discredit the visiting boys, even though the struggle splits apart her own social group. Though All I Wanna Do is being marketed as a goofy romp, it walks a line between a coming-of-age comedy and a young feminist manifesto (as one might imagine from the movie's previous title, Strike!). It's a tricky combination, but writer-director Sarah Kernochan succeeds--she also wrote Impromptu, which similarly mixed tart yet sympathetic humor with subtle political commentary. The direction is tight and the script allows its heroines a surprising complexity. The cast of rising young stars, also featuring Rachael Leigh Cook, is superb throughout. Strongly recommended. --Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars What i wanna was an even movie.......2007-06-12

Pretty much all this film is good for is a see it once rental, because it had so much promise but never delivered plus i thought it was too much over the top male bashing to actually enjoy. i rent the dvd because i liked the other films these actresses have been in and decided to give it a shot but i simplely found this movie to be a little self service in the script for my taste and lacking any substance or any real depth and it was uneven all around. all in all this film stinks and i so badly want to like it too what a shame.

it's worth 49.cents to me. what junk.

5 out of 5 stars you're so beautiful I could eat your teeth.......2007-03-12

I love this movie! I watched it on tv one day by complete chance and feel in love! Mostly with Vincent Kartheiser who plays Snake. This movie has an odd flair that just drew me in. The actors did an amazing job and it was a fun journey with them. I must once again comment on Vincent Kartheiser. He was so amazing he had some of the weirdest lines ever! But he delivered them in a way that made them positively intoxicating! I mean who can say "you're so beautiful I could eat your teeth" and make it sound like the most amazing thing! If you love goofy movies with lots of heart this is for you!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for any Boarding school!.......2006-07-06

This move describes the whole vote and co-education. I love it!

1 out of 5 stars Forgettable.......2006-06-26

This movie is so forgettable that I am sure that I have watched it before. Don't waste your time. Although it has a good overall feminist theme, the acting, plot, and script were useless. It's pretty predictable as well.

If you must watch this drivel, wait for it to appear on cable.

1 out of 5 stars This movie is the worst!!.......2006-05-13

Why did I see this movie? I saw it only because it had some of my favorite actresses in it which include Kirstin Dunst and Rachel Leigh Cook. I thought it would be a nice movie. Boy was i wrong! I hated it. I think all this movie had to do with was sex and drugs/alchohal. As for the rating, PG-13, this movie is definitely an 'R'. The message this is giving the kids is to go have fun, make out, and have sex and get kicked out of school because of it. I would give this movie a zero if I could. Kirstin Dunst I give you a 5, but this movie I give a zero. Don't watch it, it's repulsive!

4 out of 5 stars A rare treat.......2007-06-03

I can't understand why this nifty DVD has gotten so little attention. It seems like it's been rare since it first came out, has no reviews but mine on here, and is already discontinued! But if you like seeing beautiful women playing basketball and football in their birthday suits, this is great stuff! There don't seem to be many DVDs out there where women are actually playing sports nude, either. As, the recent "Playboy's Women of World Soccer" has got lots of sexy segments of posing, taking showers, and so on, but the only soccer going is is a little kicking around in the yard for show. But on NUDE FOOTBALL/NUDE BASKETBALL, they're really playing those sports about 90% of the time. Nikki Nova is the only lady on here I know by name, but I recognize several of the others, and they're all plenty hot. If you saw NUDE POOL PARTY, another good one by DGD, several of them here are on that one too.

Both games start with warm-ups, where the players are topless, then they get totally nude during the games. The basketball segment is the better of the two. The football segment has a lot of shadows in much of the picture, which causes lighting problems as the cameras try to compensate for the contrast. And on the football part, the girls take a lot longer to get totally nude. Well, in both games they DO keep tennis shoes on, so technically they're never TOTALLY nude. Both segments have hot female announcers, who gradually shed their clothing too. Also on both parts, the camerawork is not top-notch, with too few cameras in use resulting in a lot of jittery panning, uneven zooming in and out, and not much choice on which film to use for a shot. Still, it's fairly decent camerawork and picture quality. The whole DVD runs nearly 2 hours, which is very generous for this type of program. The slide show bonus is fair.

In sum, NUDE FOOTBALL/NUDE BASKETBALL is far from perfect, but if you like seeing ladies play sports in the buff, this is one of the best I've seen, and I sure wish I had been there to join in the fun!!

I bought "Potty Power" and it keeps a 22 month old interested but I wasn't totally happy with everything about that DVD. As such, I bought "I Can Go Potty!...". It does not keep this child interested at all. A child does the talking/explaining which is great. It shows a boy playing with the potty chair with a plush toy and just playing with it in a non-potty way. This may be what happens in real life but no child needs to be shown to do that.
Much of the story is of the boy sitting on the chair while day dreaming about going to outter space, under the sea and in the jungle. Do children who are potty training age know about these places even? The alligator is scary, that is so helpful. I sent this back, and I hate to do things like that.

I am so excited I can barely type this review! My 3 year old son was anti-potty training and said "NO" every time I brought it up. I read somewhere not to push the issue, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to buy a DVD about it and maybe he would become more interested. I ordered this DVD and just played it this evening. He just stared at the TV for 5 minutes straight without turning away then he literally brought the potty into the living room, sat down and went for the first time! Then he kept asking to play the song part of it again & again while he was playing with his cars. About an hour later he jumps up, runs over to the potty, sat down and went again! I didn't even have to bring it up! I am just stunned at the moment and had to recommend this video immediately. Just amazing and worth every penny!

I bought this video for my daughter when she was a year old. I let her watch it everyday (that's all the T.V. she was allowed) and by the time she was 18 months old she really wanted to use the potty. She loved the "big kid" song and wanted to be a big kid too! Thanks to this video my daughter was potty trained at 18 months!! Now I need to get it on DVD for my son!

2 out of 5 stars Expensive, short, mildly bizzare.......2005-09-17

Although friends had reccommended "Potty Power," I bought "I Can Go Potty" on a whim when I was running another errand at Borders (sorry Amazon), and could not find Potty Power. I was not impressed by this DVD, and would not recommend it. I would have given it one star, except my daughter kind of liked it.

The main part of the DVD is really short. It contains a couple of wierd musical video montages, and the "potty safari" mentioned by the previous reviewer. so the actual meat of the DVD is probably 5 minutes long. One of the "extra's" called "Parent's Guide" was actually video previews. $15 for 15 minutes, two low budget musical montages, a strange off-topic safari fantasy, and video previews? I'm still kicking myself for not just ordering online and waiting a few days for Potty Power.

2 out of 5 stars Scared my daughter............2005-05-31

I liked the video except that when the little boy who was potty training had a make believe journey into the jungle on a safari (on his toilet) there were horrible mean looking animals (i.e. crocodile staring into the camera snarling & snapping) that made my daughter burst out into tears and ran out of the room sobbing. Not the best thing to happen when I am trying to make potty training fun. She won't go near the potty again. If you have a boy who likes wild animals it would probably be okay ..... but for younger kids it can be scary....! ;-(
