"Queen of the Indies" Parker Posey (Dazed and Confused, Waiting for Guffman, The Daytrippers) shines in this lightweight comedy about a romance between a floundering downtown party girl and a falafel vendor set in Manhattan's trendy loft and club scene. Posey is utterly charming as Mary, the 23-year-old whose talents are pretty much limited to "partying, flirting, making stuff up." Her penchant for partying gets her evicted from her apartment, whereupon--unable to pay her fine or decide what she wants to do with her life--she receives financial and career help from her godmother, who gets her a job in the New York Public Library system. Does the Dewey decimal system hold the key to Mary's future? Director Daisy von Scherler Mayer went on to direct Madeline (1998). --Jim Emerson

If you've ever doubted how much a star can carry a movie, look no further than Legally Blonde, Robert Luketic's pop fluff about a sorority girl who becomes the reigning brain at Harvard Law School. The film tries way too hard to be pop fluff, but thankfully it also understands the comic glories of Reese Witherspoon. As Elle Woods, the supposedly dimwitted heroine, Witherspoon gives a high-wattage performance that somehow comes across as both lusciously cartoonish and warmly human. It's a radiant comic turn worthy of Marilyn Monroe, and Luketic throws the whole movie at her, even though its intentional kitsch and sledgehammer contrivances don't trust you enough to figure out on your own what might be guilty fun about it. It's a lame movie, essentially, that redeems itself by knowing just enough to keep things sunny and moving right along. The film is content to follow several steps behind the regal Witherspoon, carrying her train. You probably will be, too. --Steve Wiecking

5 out of 5 stars Unconventional Road to Self Discovery.......2007-07-02

Based on the novel of the same name by Amanda Brown, this 2001 comedy is about the losses and gains experienced by a priviledged young woman from California, and her ultimate self-empowerment.
Elle Woods(as played by a multi-dimensional Reese Witherspoon) is the President of her Sorority, Delta Nu. A neighbor of TV producer Aaron Spelling during her formative years, her world revolves around fashion and frivolity, although we see signs of underlying intelligence when a sales clerk who views her as "a dumb blonde with Daddy's plastic" is taught a lesson.
We meet the beloved Sorority Queen on the day she expects a proposal from her long-time boy friend, Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis). Instead of a marriage proposal, Warner breaks up with Elle during their evening out, explaining that his family back East expect a lot from him, and that marrying a "Jackie" instead of a "Marilyn" will be more conducive to his family's desires, if he wants to be a Senator.
The spurned young woman spends the next few days behind the closed doors of her dorm room, with only her chiahuahua/favorite accessory Bruiser (Moonie) for companionship. Her stereotypically ditzy sorority sisters, Margot and Serena (Jessica Caufiell, Alanna Ubach) finally draw her out of her pink cocoon, and take her for a manicure. There is a comical moment where Serena converses in Chinese with a manicurist, which gives her a little more depth. While reading a "Fox and Hound" magazine in the waiting room, Elle sees a photo of Warner's brother with his fiancee, breifly discusses the fiancee's credentials with the customer sitting next to her(Natalie Barish), and decides to attend Harvard Law School to win Warner back.
Elle's parents (James Read, and Tane McClure) are not very encouraging in this endeavor, nor is her advisor (Allyce Beasley) as Elle does not have the academic background for it. Still, she passes her LSAT test, and sends and admissions video, for which it requires some suspension of disbelief to think that the pop-eyed, bow-tied Admissions Committee would deem acceptable.
Elle creates quite a stir upon her arrival at Harvard, but remains fairly oblivious to comments and stares about her eccentricities in manner and dress.
She finally locates Warner, who is stunned that she got into Harvard, and during a class for which she is ill-prepared, is shown up by a small, pallid, mahogony-tressed Vivian Kensington(Selma Blair), whom, to her great distress, she learns is Warner's fiancee.
Along the way, she receives help and advice from Emmett Richmond (a well-cast, kind, and encouraging Luke Wilson, whose performance hits all the right notes), and a cathartic chat with manicurist Paulette Bonafonte (Jennifer Coolidge), which will be bright spots along her journey.
Gradually, she overcomes rejection and humiliation by her classmates through perseverance, and attention to details others neglect, winning friends and influencing people.
She helps Paulette with a legal matter, and in getting a date with a handsome UPS guy (Bruce Thomas), and the mutual friendship between the law student and manicurist is a delightful cornerstone of this film.
Gradually, Vivian warms to her, and the two share a laugh about Warner's idiosyncracies.
One of Elle's more intriguing classmates--the character as well as the actor himself-- is the sweet, awkward David Kidney, portrayed by Oz Perkins, with the eyes of his father, Anthony, who does great justice to his acting pedigree. Sadly, he would only have a little more than a month to enjoy the success of this film before enduring the shattering loss of his mother, Beri Berenson, in the 9-11 Disaster.
Elle's opinionatedness in Professor Callahan's(Victor Garber's)class appears to earn her an internship with Callahan's law firm, and she, Warner, Vivian, David, and Enid Wexler(Meredith Scott Lynn) work on a murder case under Callahan's supervison. The task also reunites Elle with Emmett.
The case is a high profile one involving the slaying of a wealthy 60-year-old man, allegedly by his young second wife, Brooke Taylor Windham (Ali Larter), a member of Elle's sorority, and a wealthy fitness instructor of whom Elle was once a student.
Raquel Welch appears as the ex-wife of the murdered man, with a perfect upper-crust accent, Linda Cardellini is her daughter, Chutney, and Greg Serano is the pool boy, Enrique Salvatore.
There are comical moments when Elle tries to coax an alibi from Brooke, bringing her a basket of beauty aids and " the Bible" (a copy of "Cosmopolitan" magazine), and later discovers evidence to discredit a witness in a way that only a Cosmo Girl can, with Emmett sneaking up on his blind side in the process.
Elle suffers a major setback when she discovers the real reason Callahan wanted her as an intern, but Professor Stromwell(Holland Taylor) goads Elle into having a bit more backbone and stick-to-itiveness.
Brooke fires Callahan, and hires Elle, who under Emmett's supervision, solves the case, much to her own amazement and everyone else's.
Warner, whose true character has been revealed throughout the film in subtle and not-so-subtle ways, finally views Elle as a worthy marriage partner, but Elle has her own ideas about their future relationship.
A glittering musical score accompanies our heroine as she walks out of the courtroom and into a very bright future, with a meaningful career and a wonderful life partner just on the horizon.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent light entertainment.......2007-06-22

So much is great about this film. Ok, it's not flawless - there are a couple of really silly bits - like the courtroom scene with the pool cleaner's guilty admission and his boyfriend's response. But it's great, feel-good fun. Very well directed, tight script for the most-part and the performances are all great.

3 out of 5 stars Fun--but not strictly a no brainer.......2007-05-30

Cases can hinge on haircare--and not everyone is as they seem. The film was mindless fun on one level, but teaches you really do need to look a little bit deeper sometimes.

Clearly it's fantasy, but a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Memorable chick flick.......2007-05-19

Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) is a ditzy, yet intelligent sorority president and fashion major with the perfect, handsome, and smart boyfriend, Warner. When Warner dumps her because she isn't "the serious girlfriend he needs" to advance his career, her whole world comes crashing down around her. After weeks of friend's concern, manicures, and moping Elle realizes that the only way to get Warner back is to become a serious girlfriend, meaning starting a career in law at Harvard. Elle actually manages to get into Harvard, her specialty being the history of polka dots, with a high score on her LSATs, and with an original admissions video in which she showcases her talent for using legal jargon in everyday life and her ability to recall facts quickly, such as the previous day's soap operas. So Elle gathers her possesions, most of which are pink, prepares Bruiser, her miniture short haired chihuahua, and sets off for Harvard.

This movie was not what I expected, but I loved it! It's a great chick flick to watch with a group of friends and has memorable characters. Elle teaches us that all we need is determination (and good fashion sense!) to achieve our dreams.

Valley Girl is, like--Omigod!--one of the most "tubular" teen comedies of the early 1980s. This movie launched Nicolas Cage's career, and it's easy to see why: Following his tiny role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Cage is perfectly cast as a Hollywood punk who instantly falls for Julie (the irresistible Deborah Foreman), a San Fernando "Valley Girl"--a brighter variant of the stereotype immortalized in Moon Unit Zappa's 1982 novelty song--who must choose between wild-boy Nic and her preening jock boyfriend (Mark Bowen). Fortunately, Julie knows what's right for her (even if her "Val" friends don't), and in refreshing defiance of teen-flick tradition, her post-hippie parents (Frederic Forrest, Colleen Camp) are supportively cool. With sincere humor, a lively soundtrack of '80s hits, and a time-capsule cruise of Hollywood landmarks, Valley Girl is both timeless and nostalgic, owing much of its lasting appeal to Martha Coolidge's sensitive direction. Fer sure, y'know, it definitely won't gag you with a spoon. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Julie's cool, Randy's hot. She's from the Valley, he's like'so not! Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman star in this "sweet, fast, unpretentious [and] funny" (Los Angeles Times) romance that mixes preppies, punkers and a "hit-filled soundtrack" (The New York Times)including The Plimsouls and Modern Englishinto an iconic cult film that's "entertaining" (New York)'to the max! Julie is, like, so over her preppy boyfriend, she dumps him on the escalator at the Galleria. And when she meets punker Randy, her eyes practically bug out because she thinks he's sexy even though he makes her friends gag! But even if Randy's ready to stop the world and melt with her, can Julie risk her losing her friends and her super-popularity at school just to be with him?

IT WAS SPECTACULAR..I LOVED THIS MOVIE AND I AM GLAD I WAS ABLE TO FIND IT HERE,..THANK YOU AMAZON

4 out of 5 stars Light and fluffy.......2007-03-07

(3.5/5 stars) It is amazing how many of the words and phrases from this film have become a normalized part of the vernacular. "Awesome" is one obvious example, and it is difficult to imagine teenagers today conversing without the use of "Like," where it is not used to connote "similarity." At the time of its release, these were rather novel. This film does have a good soundtrack and it is a pretty decent love story of a popular, middle class girl, who falls for a boy from the wrong side of the tracks. In the title role, Deborah Foreman is quite irresistible. Nicolas Cage is fine as the rough-hewn Randy, though he is never very believable as the favorite son of his tough neighborhood. It is embarrassing to the point of laughter as he interacts with his homeboys during a cruise through his neighborhood. Another aspect that does not ring true is some of the dialogue. A prime example of this is the conversation among Randy, Julie, Tommy and Stacie at the club in Hollywood, where they sit down and immediately begin discussing their statuses and degrees of authenticity. Not only is it not convincing in its content, the transition to it is non-existent. Gripes aside, this is not a bad film. However, I would not go so far as to say it is great either. As a comedy, it isn't very funny. As a romance, their love seems to be based on physical attributes rather than commonalities and, as such, not very compelling. Nonetheless, Elizabeth Daily is always a delight, and her role here makes this a must for fans. Also, the DVD transfer, 5.1 channel mix effort both widescreen and full screen versions are worth an extra ½ star.

5 out of 5 stars Like Oh My God! This movie is totally Bitchin'!.......2007-02-22

The Popular `80s teen film "Valley Girl" based on Frank Zappa's Novelty Song of the same title, popularized the image of the "Valley girl". A Valley Girl usually referred to girls from The San Fernando Valley in California. This type of girl usually dressed in preppy colorful clothes, had their own slang terms, cared about their social status, and usually had money. In 1983 Valley Girl, the movie was released, and became a cult status film, depicting the Valley Girl lifestyle. The movie stars Deborah Foreman, as Julie Richman, a popular, preppy girl from the San Fernando Valley, and Nicolas Cage as Randy, a young punk from Hollywood. After dumping her preppy, good-looking boyfriend, Julie attends one of her friends parties and ends up meeting Randy, even though they are from 2 different worlds, these two show that opposites do attract and instantly become an item. Even though her parents are cool with their relationship, her friends aren't, and pressure Julie into dumping him, so she can get back with her Ex. This film is not only great, but has an incredible soundtrack, with so many great New Wave hits. Watch for musical appearances by The Plimsouls, and Josie Cotton in this film as well. For those of you who were around when this film came out will probably view it with nostalgia, as for those of us who weren't will love looking at the awesome fads, trends, and listening to the great music. Overall this film is like totally trepindicular, fer Sure!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding 80's youth movie!.......2007-02-05

It really seems to be a trend to look back on past decades and ridicule just about everything that has "come before". It makes me laugh that people are so smug to think that the "present" is perfect. Well, I have news for you. The present is far from perfect and there's a whole lot about the past that was MUCH better than it is today. The movie "Valley Girl" is a wonderful example of how COOL the early 80's were!

I won't offer a review of the film itself, because that's already been done by much better reviewers than myself. I will simply say that this is a great youth movie from a very positive time in America. It's always great to be young... but it was TOTALLY AWESOME to be young in the early 80's!

The DVD features a great transfer with a few nifty "extras" (80's trivia track and audio commentary by director Martha Coolidge). As noted by a few other reviewers, a few of the songs have been removed from the film (and this is not noted anywhere on the DVD package). Also, for some reason the sound was remixed and some of the music has been placed in the "background" when it was originally quite loud and "up front". Since the music is such an integral part of this film it's a shame that it has been altered in any way.

Remember:

If you should ever find yourself making fun of 80's fashions or haircuts just put Valley Girl in your DVD player so that you can be reminded of how FUN and COOL that time really was. Those who truly understand what the 80's were all about make no apologies and have no regrets. The 80's were a TOTAL blast, and Valley Girl is a wonderful testament to that fact!

The brief 1980s mania surrounding "the Coreys" peaked with License to Drive, a modest but surprisingly still enjoyable adventure comedy. Les (Corey Haim, Lucas) has a chance to date his dream girl, Mercedes (Heather Graham, Boogie Nights, in her first significant movie role)--but he's just failed his driving exam. Motivated by a mixture of pride and hormones, he steals his grandfather's Cadillac and heads out on the town with Mercedes for a night that swiftly becomes an escalating series of disasters, made worse by the foolhardy antics of Les' best friend Dean (Corey Feldman, Stand by Me). Despite some egregious '80s fashion disasters (Graham gets the worst of them), License to Drive holds up surprisingly well--it's no work of genius, but it is a solidly made and entertaining teen comedy that's more coherent than most. The depiction of parent-teen relations is fairly honest and particularly well-played by Richard Masur (Risky Business) and Carol Kane (In the Soup) as the parents. The DVD includes a very funny and rambunctious audio commentary track by the screenwriter and director, as well as interviews with the grown-up Coreys. A must-have for fans of '80s nostalgia. --Bret Fetzer

I watched this movie back in the 80's when I was a kid, and here it is 25 years later and this movie is still the funniest movie of all time. Surprisingly, I actually like most (I won't say all) of the movies the 2 Corey's did in the 80's, but I would say that "The Lost Boys" is my absolute favorite semi-horror flick, and "License to Drive" is my favorite comedy.

This movie is totally an 80's flick, but non the less it always brings back feelings of nestalgia! It brings back memories of being that 16yr old that can't wait to get their license. Both Corey Haim and Corey Feldman are perfect for the role. Even though Corey Haim's character fails the written exam, this teen somehow prevails and the outcome is hilarious! And even though this movie is almost 18yrs old, all teen agers can relate to it! This movie is timeless!!

3 out of 5 stars The Stoned Age.......2007-03-10

Overall a worth while movie to watch
but not as good as Dazed and Confused or Fast Times at Ridgemont High

    5 out of 5 stars Groovy.......2007-03-09

Makes you remember old times. For those who lived the 80's stoned this is just what you'll remember. Alcohol, Sex, drugs and metal!!

3 out of 5 stars Not as funny as I remember........2006-10-29

The quality of the video is poor. It looks like they video taped it in a movie theater. The movie has some funny scenes but it's not as good as I remember. I probably liked it so much because my girlfriend at the time hated it.

    Love,

    Jarrod

5 out of 5 stars Grab a doobie and kick back for some laughs.......2006-08-28

I love this movie. It is definately a cult classic type of film and you will appreciate it a lot more if you were a crazy teen between 1979 to 1984. The plot is simple enough; 2 guys try to get laid and end up in the craziest situations. I wouldn't say this movie is "better" than Dazed & Confused, it is just different and much more realistic in my opinion. I can totaly relate with this film and all of its characters!

5 out of 5 stars "Scnappster?...........that stuff makes me whork!".......2006-06-01

This is probably my all-time favorite party movie. Hubbs and Joe are like a modern day Cheech & Chong. This movie had me laughing so hard, I was crying. I can totally relate to The Stoned Age, because I'm from a small town, and that is all me and my friends did was "drive around trying to get drunk, stoned, and laid". The blonde does get naked in this, but i didnt think that she was as hot as everyone else did. I highly recommend this movie!! It IS better than Dazed and Confused.

I am a Sandra Oh fan so I bought this movie because of her and Taye Diggs.
It was fun to watch and I enjoyed it.

    4 out of 5 stars Fun Fluff.......2006-08-22

Ok, so this movie is not going to be on any great movie lists, but I still enjoyed it. Sometimes you just need a movie where you don't need to think, you just watch and have fun. I liked the plot, and all of the actors (Heather Graham, David Sutcliffe, Taye Diggs, Sandra Oh) did a great job with their roles. A great chick flick for movie night!

3 out of 5 stars Have your Cake and Eat it ,Too.......2006-07-04

Director Nisha Ganatra and writer Tassie Cameron seem to have most of their experience in TV movies so this little slice of the industry is a change for them. Would that it were wholly successful because it seems as though both had a fine idea for something to say but just didn't know how to make it work. And again, blame the PR folks for making a cover for the DVD that not only seems silly, it has little to do with the story inside.

Pippa McGee (Heather Graham) is a travel writer, a hedonist, and an independent woman who avoids relationships like the plague. The film starts with a goofus dash for a wedding in which she is once again a bridesmaid on the run. After the ceremony she jokes with her best friend Lulu (Sandra Oh) who is equally against long term relationships beyond a quick shag, and she also meets one Ian (David Sutcliffe - Under the Tuscan Sun, Testosterone, Happy Endings etc), a handsome if shy young man who though attracted to Pippa, sees her as dangerous territory.

Pippa soon discovers that her father Malcolm McGee (Bruce Gray), a wealthy successful owner of a magazine conglomerate, is ill, has a heart attack, and though the father and daughter have had a negligible relationship, Pippa offers her help. Of course, her assignment is to be editor of 'Wedding Bells' magazine her departed mother started, and Pippa takes on the epitome of everything she loathes about relationships and marriage and tries to make a go of it. She discovers that Ian is her father's vice president and thus in charge of her new and loathed assignment. Pippa partners with the handsome magazine photographer Hemingway Jones (Taye Diggs), has a fling, and becomes close friends and partners in an attempt to change the look of the wedding magazine. There are far too many subplots to discuss, but suffice it to say that changes occur in the personalities of everyone involved and the ending, while entirely predictable, has enough humor and warmth to make a good evening out of a shaky story.

Heather Graham handles her 'challengingly bad' role with great aplomb: she is a delight to watch. The remainder of the cast does their best with the lines they're given. This is a bit of fluff, aimed at the 'chick flick' devotees, but it has its moments. Grady Harp, July 06

3 out of 5 stars Good movie for "chick flick" lovers.......2006-07-01

I love "chick flicks"(as my husband calls them). This movie will not be winning any Oscars but I found it romantic, funny and entertaining. Heather Graham's character was likable and enjoyable to watch. I would recommend this movie.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of my evening!.......2006-06-17

What???? Sorry, but this movie had NO acting merit whatsoever to me. Maybe it's because I like movies with a little more substance. I saw it on tv and was glad I did not purchase it. It just did not flow at all. The characters were not believable in my opinion.

3 out of 5 stars Why do you watch?.......2007-03-19

Slasher movies have a very specific purpose ... and if you enjoy that purpose, you'll enjoy them, not so much despite the fact that they're not all that well made but, in part, because they're not all that well made. Slasher movies differ from true horror movies in that ... well ... they're not really very horrifying, unless you're VERY easily upset by even the HINT of danger and/or violence. Slasher movies are, to most people, more silly and/or stupid than horrifying. They are a very intentional blend of eye candy, danger, fear, violence and gore ... in varying amounts, depending on the target audience and creators tastes ... aimed at tantilizing people with a glancing second hand experience of things forbidden.

SPM is a rather mild example of this genre, at least by my tastes, and wasn't all that tantilizing. It had it's moments and I did add it to my collection for a time. Other reviewers go into more details of the plot and some of the compromises made in the production, and I don't see any point in rehashing what's already been said. My bottom line review of the film ...

    a) If you're in the mood for a rather mild but amusing slasher flick ... this might be just the ticket.
    b) If you hate all slasher flicks ... you'll probably hate this one too.
    c) If you want something really intense ... either a very graphic slasher flick or a true horror flick ... keep looking.
    d) If you want to "study" the genre and be familiar with some of it's milestones, this should be on your list of movies to at least rent.
I don't think there's any right or wrong about this ... just what suits your personal tastes.

    5 out of 5 stars Please Pass The Cheese.But I Love IT.......2007-02-13

"The Slumber Party Massacre" Is another movie I can watch over and over again..
I love the characters in this movie they are completely over the top and fun.
The gore in this movie is abundant and will satisfy a true gore hound and its also is laugh out loud funny at times without losing the feel of the over all premise.
I especially love the character of Trish's little sister Courtney who steals playgirl magazines and talks about how a boy French kissed her and I can quote the movie I have seen it so many times she say's "Ew it was all slimy and stuff I thought I was gonna throw up" I was LMAO ,its actually the way she says it ,she's quite the good little actress.
The final showdown is great and so is the rest of the movie, it's great fun and a slasher lovers delight ,lots of blood and nudity. A must for the collector.

3 out of 5 stars People are so stupid.......2007-01-14

People always comlpain that actors in horror slashers films are too old looking. Who cares. People forget that it was the 80's. Boys, girls, men and women in the 80's all look older because they had long hair. And having long big hair full of hairspray was common back in the 1980's. You especially look older if you style your hair with gel, mousee, or hairspray. Doesn't everyone know that an 18 year old guy or girl can dress professionally at work and look 5 to 10 years older than they really are. It's not all about the facical structure that makes a person look younger or older.Everyone also looks much younger if you leave your hair natural. By natural i mean not putting all the crap like gel in your hair. Of course guys of today shave their hair or have a near shaved buzzcut so we look much much younger. People are so stupid. Think before you say something.

5 out of 5 stars great slasher flick!.......2006-07-18

Alot of people say how they dislike this movie,i dont know i found it to be quite good...i mean its a slasher flick are u expecting it to be a 3 hour suspense movie? I also heard people say the actor that played the killer wasnt any good...i thought he played the part very well. I found him to be very creepy and it is believeable that he would escape from a mental instituion. Not to mention he kills with a drill as well which adds even more effect to the movie. I havent seen the sequels yet though, but this one i would reccomend to any fans of 80s slasher films...if you are too much into the new age of horror/slasher films than yeah u wont like this.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing memorable at all.......2006-06-30

I have read that this film was written and directed by a woman, and intended as a satire on the "slasher" genre...is that right? Because it sure doesn't appear to be anything different to any other slasher film from the 1980's. The plot? A girl holds a slumber party and a maniac on the loose comes to the house and tries to kill them all. That's it. Yup, that really is it. Along the way we see lots of shots of the girls getting undressed which are so obvious and blatant that I would have taken them as evidence that this really was a send-up of the genre, if the rest of the film wasn't so painfully and boringly routine.

Every horror cliche is here, and not a single thing happens that has not been seen in countless other movies. There's no earthly reason for the girls to carry on falling prey to the killer once they realise that something is wrong. He's only one man, for gawd's sake, and there are loads of possible exits from the large house they are staying in. And when he actually gets inside, the stupid dummies don't even run out of the front door, but into closets or down into the basement, etc...why, I don't know, for the house is in a fully inhabited residential street, not the middle of a forest or something...who wrote this mess? The acting is also rubbish, and the maniac killer has no back story to explain his behaviour, he just exists to terrorize the girls. I wouldn't even say that the female cast is that attractive, but if you don't really care as long as you see lots of topless shots, you should be happy here. The murders are also quite bloody, but nothing about this film shouts out ""recommend me!", so I won't. It's tiresome and instantly forgettable.

      5 out of 5 stars He-he-hello!.......2007-07-04

This movie is wonderful. I think it was underrated, and they should put it out on dvd. Anyway I think this is one of Parker Posey's best works, great performance. She plays a sassy but a little bit clueless (initially) club kid/party girl type who hangs out with the arty, party New York scene. This movie really captures the art scene in the city in the 1990's. Back when rent was high but probably still affordable and jobs were kinda hard to come by for those in the arts if they preferred more to party than practice the arts. The whole cast has chemistry, Parker acts so natural with her fashionable best friend and her dj roomate. Her chracter falls for a Lebanese teacher-turned-falafel vendor, and the ensuing romance is so comic and endearing. And I, like almost everyone else, agree that the scene with Natasha is priceless and should be rewound again and again for its comic genius. Parker's character does find her way in the end, when she wakes up and realises she needs to go beyond just partying. I loved the dance/house soundtrack flowing throughout and all the bit characters which showed up in the movie throughout. Even down to the rainbow-colored stairs leading up to Parker's apartment, and the mystery of "Carl". This movie is a quiet gem.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome representation!.......2007-02-27

One of Parker Posey's funniest performances. It has a great supporting cast and a fun plot. Must see for anyone who likes to party, but can also appreciate other things like....the Dewey Decimal System. :)

5 out of 5 stars This is a great movie!.......2007-01-18

I love everything about this movie. I watched it several times and never got tired of it. Each time I watched this movie I saw something I had missed from the very first time watching it. The acting is wonderful, the music is great. The plot is interesting, drew me right in. It should have got an Oscar, and several best actor awards.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect Parker Posey!.......2006-07-18

This film is a delightful, light hearted look at both sides of where the "club kid" rave scene blends with the New York art, music and performance art worlds (with a cameo by the omnipresent Miss Bunny). This is "Torch Song Trilogy" for the perky-post-teen girls. "That Girl" for our disaffected, affected millenium times.
The dialogue is fast and funny, and Parker Posey's costumer deserves - if not an academy award, at least - a stadium "wave" of kudos.
Of course, this film rests on the very stylish platform heels of Miss Posey, and she is perfectly cast. Like a lot of her acting work, it may not be very deep, it is often self-referential and, well, posey... but it all WORKS. She is an entertainer, and this film entertains, she carries it on her shoulders like a faux leopard wrap, and never lets it drop to the floor.
Mary is a superficial party fashionista who isn't above stealing desinger clothing from a friend's closet or making out with someone else's boyfriend. On a deeper level, this is a story of a girl and her friends who are care-less in every sense of the word, including about other people; and the process of learning that caring is neccessary to life.
The script is beautifully crafted, witty, and the only performance that disappoints is the Aunt, in a role that was much too one-dimensional and heavy handed; a more nuanced performance from her, would have deepened the relationship between the two... but... hey... this is comedy. The best performance is by the fallafel selling boyfriend. We should all be so lucky.
I rate this as a 4 because it isn't a great moment of film history, it is not a classic, and it is not great art (all of which get deeper and richer on re-viewing). But it has everything an entertaining film needs, and is worth viewing several times for the clothes alone!

5 out of 5 stars Beleive in me!.......2006-05-02

Parker Posey is hott. This movie is hott. There is a lovable quality about the film so basically its a love or hate expierence. If you enjoy the rave scene or something similar about it I think you should check this movie out. There are maney quotable lines and scenes from the movie as you can tell from other reviews, This movie is just pure entertainment. Hi everyone Im Renee and IM A GODAM ALCOHOLIC!

      Description

A neon-saturated story about female entrapment in an urban setting populated by hedonistic, angst-ridden characters. Vicky, engrossed by the narcissistic lifestyle of nightclubs and Ecstasy pills is torn between two men: her neurotic and jealous live-in boyfriend she resolves to break-up with as soon as she can drain $500K from their bank account and an enterprising gangster whose presence becomes both a source of trouble and a beacon of salvation

3 out of 5 stars Lost Souls in Taipei: Visually Stunning, But Emotionally Too Detached.......2007-06-16

In the neon-saturated city of Taipei lives a young woman named Vicky. She is living with her boyfriend Hao, but he isn't working now and moreover, is a very jealous guy. Vicky is also attracted to Jack, a man living in underworld and running a night club.

Acclaimed Taiwanese director Hsiao-hsien Hou's film is all about Vicky played by Qi Shu, but "Millennium Mambo" is nothing like eventful "Transporter." In short, nothing "big" happens here. So if you happen to read Vicky's story and expect something dramatic and romantic in "Millennium Mambo," probably you will be disappointed.

Not that the film is total failure. On the contrary, this quiet film, which employs such techniques as long, continuous shots or non-linear timeline, is what exactly we should expect from the director of "A City of Sadness." The difference is "Millennium Mambo" does not deal with Taiwanese history, but modern life of young people of the land represented by Vicky. Whereas in "A City of Sadness" one historical incident plays a key role, in "Mambo" the life of Vicky has nothing to say, or suggest, except ... Vicky, who is not particularly interesting presence per se as she embodies what the young generation of Taiwan is all about, according to the director.

Some would think naturally that the film is tedious and boring. After all, the director is not interested in Vicky's story itself. Curiously Vicky herself tells the story of herself, looking back from ten years after the events described in the film. The strange voiceover makes Vicky all the more detached from us, making herself part of the scenes of everyday life in Taipei.

And probably this is what Hsiao-hsien Hou intended. He is always good at capturing the atmosphere, or air of the places where the characters are living, and in this he does not disappoint. He also successfully makes a great contrast between the stifling rooms in Taipei and the chilling, snowy landscapes in Yubari, Japan, where Vicky looks most cheerful and lively. (This film was really shot during the film festival in Yubari City, in February, 2001, and the old lady working at the Japanese bar was really running the place.)

For all these merits, I couldn't bring myself to like this film because, in spite of the visually stunning cinematography, it is hard to keep watching the life of someone depicted in an emotionally detached fashion. Hsiao-hsien Hou's touch is not cold, rather compassionate in his own way when showing Vicky and Hao, but once we realize what he is trying to, we are to keep watching him making the same point over and over again for the rest of film.

4 out of 5 stars Not a movie for everyone..........2007-06-05

"Millennium Mambo", directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien, is not a movie for everyone. The reason why I say that is pretty simple, as not much happens, and the story is somehow slow, unless you get caught up in what is happening to the main character. I did, and that is the reason why I enjoyed this dvd...

The main character of this film is Vicky (Shu Qi), and "Millennium Mambo" is just a way to allow her to tell her story, in her words, from a very subjective point of view. Vicky is an extremely beautiful young woman that lives in Taiwan and doesn't have a clue regarding what to do with her life. But is that her fault, or is that loss of direction something that has to do with the spirit of our time? And why does she make us care?

I should point out that this movie doesn't end neatly, so those who only like that kind of ending won't find it here. "Millennium Mambo" is open-ended, in more or less the same way that Vicky's own story is in the process of changing and doesn't have real fixed limits. I find that fitting, at least for this movie, and I think that you will deem it appropriate too. Recommended!

PS: I give this movie 3.5 stars out of 5 :)

3 out of 5 stars Look out, something fermented this way comes!.......2007-03-03

Shu Qi looks dear and is fortunately in nearly every scene. I would say that this character must have been written for her. There are many girls attractive and desirable but with no power in the economic tiger that is Taiwan. I sense no culture where girls carry a sense of their innate worth. Anywhere else, she would have developed into a chic but colder type but on Taiwan island, she is sweet and somehow dowdy in cheapened trendy attire despite her gamine skeleton. It's not that women in Taiwan are weak but they seem to be undervalued. That's the only reason I can see for the posturing and presumptuousness of her immature BF. Her tolerance and accommodation have nothing to do with any superiority of the male or the benefits of his chivalry and protection. I found myself boggled by the behavior of the deadweight in this movie and the defeated corrupted version of machismo of his competitor. Kick them to the curb and get a job at a Club Med.

This world seems shallow in a cultural way that predates consumerism. It's like something got erased perhaps by choice and this creeping disaster is the result. These small problems created for themselves ufortunately equal heart break but there's no way these people can explain that about themselves because they don't believe in their own honesty. They don't have the ability to communicate sincerity to themselves nevermind seek help outside of their situation. These people are in trouble but they can't say so. It's not just the Taiwanese accent but the Taiwanese phrasing and vocabulary choices that seems to be about affectation but also denial of any meaning. There's no truth telling in the words used for injury. All these arguments and struggles that aren't really expressing the problem. I think this is big trouble if this is not uncommon.

This movie gave me the shivers several times.

      3 out of 5 stars Ho-Hum.......2006-06-23

Interesting come to mind. Beautiful comes to mind. Great acting comes to mind. Artful comes to mind. Great plot does not come to mind, nor does meaningful. That is the major problem with this film about a girl who basically does nothing but smoke and drink. I would say Shu Qi is a truly great actress and amazing beauty. Too bad her talent is wasted on a film with literally no plot. This film, like many other films of its kind, tries to fool you with pretty packaging and serious problems to devert your attenchion away from the fact that their is zero meaning in the movie. no lession, no feelings, no reflection. Nothing. Its a little like a painting i suppose. its beautiful, but it stands still and motionless. You can only stare at a beautful painting for so long before you want to stare at something else, and you can only watch this movie for so long before you want to watch something just as pretty but emotional.

2 out of 5 stars Good Acting But The Story Is So Dry.......2006-04-22

It's hard to review Millennium Mambo and explain the disappointment it gave you. It truly feels like your watching a surveillance tape of some girl and her troubles that don't appear to be that bad due to the lack emotion and feeling that the story is full of . It's so slow and like another reviewer said it does takes you days to force yourself to watch it. The first ten minutes of partying and pacing from the characters make you want to find something else to do. There's no real plot or conflict in the film to make it a story and by the end of it you just wasted your time. There literally is no excitement or any emotion to make you feel it so all that stuff on the DVD case like the words Deeply Moving is a lie. I don't think it was the acting but more the directing and story were too dry, trust me when say it's not worth watching even once.
