Editorial Review:

While it invites charges of Hollywood nepotism, Orange County overcomes that stigma with a delightful cast of newcomers and veterans alike. It's no better or worse than many teen comedies, but director Jake Kasdan (son of director Lawrence Kasdan) astutely combines teen-flick staples (stoner gags, raucous parties) with a biting undercurrent of southern California absurdity. This comedic texture helps Colin Hanks (son of Tom) and Schuyler Fisk (daughter of Sissy Spacek) to prove their big-screen promise. They play (respectively) an Orange County teen and aspiring writer named Shaun who yearns for admission to Stanford, and his sensible girlfriend who knows just how to nurture his dreams. Much of the comedy arises from the foibles of Shaun's dysfunctional family (played to perfection by Jack Black, Catherine O'Hara, and John Lithgow), while unbilled cameos by Ben Stiller and Kevin Kline add zest to a movie that tries to be different, and mostly succeeds. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars The O.C.: Beginning to End.......2007-07-02

The O.C. Season 4 may not be the best season of the show, but it is by far the most adult. As one can see in Season 4, all of the characters are beginning to change: Summer, into an environmetally conscious young adult; Seth, into a young man who is trying to support his best friend in a time of loss while keeping him out of trouble, while dealing with his girlfriend's problems and dealing with those of his family's; Taylor, still the bubbly, loving girl who believes that the world is out to get her, yet trying to find her own way to deal: with her mother, her new boyfriend (found in Ryan), and her, uh-hum, husband, from France. Then there's Ryan, the protagonist of this underrated show: he's not the most developed or charming protagonist of all ages, and to some extent he's a cliche, and there's very little room for him to grow under the circumstances Schwartz has set for him, but he's trying to find a way to deal with his three-year-girlfriend's death, her murderer, and a billion other scenarios like his son (that story sort of meanders off into nowhere) with baby's-momma and once fiance, Theresa. There's also Kirstin and Sandy--the happiest couple in Newport, Seth's parents. Although it would have been a bit more satisfying if they would have FINALLY gotten a divorce over bickering that had no end and numerous almost-affairs that turned cliche. It certainly would have provided a better plotline. Lastly, there was Kaitlyn and Julie, those left behind after the death of Marissa. The first episode of the fourth season was probably my favorite ever. It truly shows a different side of Julie: depressed, dealing with her daughter in the only way she knows how: getting drugged/drunk and wondering around, not knowing what time of day it was. We don't see a clear change in Kaitlyn until the end of the show: she is clearly materialistic, only caring about her things, as is seen when she tries to hook her mom up with a billionaire, when she truly wants to be with Ryan's father, Frank.

Now I will go through the seasons, giving brief summaries and my thoughts on each.

SEASON 1-- "Welcome to the O.C., Bitch." In this season, which many consider its best, Ryan comes to Newport from Chino, a "ghetto" town near Newport, and is soon adopted by his defense lawyer, a wealthy man named Sandy who is married to "Newport's Princess," Kirstin Cohen. Seth, their son, is a social outcast. Their next door neighbors are the Coopers: Jimmy, Julie, Kaitlyn, and the infamous Marissa. Marissa and Ryan instantly have chemistry, causing tension between Luke [Marissa's boyfriend] and Ryan. Marissa, an alcoholic, known for O.D.ing and stealing, breaks up with Luke after he cheats on her in Tiajuana, Mexico. After nearly dying, because of an O.D. do to overwhelming pressure from: her parent's divorce, her father losing all of his money and being forced to move out of his house and her boyfriend cheating on her. Ryan and Marissa eventually hook up and become serious, as do Seth and Summer, Summer being Marissa's best friend. Towards the end of the season, tension rises between Marissa and Ryan because of Marissa's bipolar friend, Oliver, who is somewhat psychotic and threatens to cause her home. During a two week break up, Ryan sleeps with an old friend from Chino, Theresa, who is impregnated. In the season finale, Julie marries Caleb Nichol, Seth's grandfather, and Ryan has to leave Newport with Theresa to help raise his child of undetermined sex, and Seth leaves on his yacht, seemingly never to be heard from again.

Rating: Five stars.

SEASON 2: "Welcome Back to the O.C., Bitch." In this season, Seth and Ryan both return after Theresa's baby "dies." Ryan and Seth both realize that they can no longer revive their relationship with past lovers. Seth turns to Alex, Alex then turns to Marissa, providing a new lesbian experience for the show. Marissa first turned to her bland yard worker, then to Alex, then back to Ryan. Ryan to Lindsay, then to Marissa. Oh, and Seth and Summer finally get back together in "The Rainy Day Women," in hich they share a Spiderman-esque kiss. Towards the end of the season, Ryan and Seth visit Nana Cohen in Miami (fate unknown), and Trey comes to stay in Newport (he is Ryan's estranged brother). Marissa tries to befriend Trey (sort of cheesy, cliche) which leads to him believing she has feelings for him. He tries to have sex with her, but when she explains she doesn't feel that way for him, he resorts to rape. She manages to escape by hitting him with drift wood (it's not that believable, really. Marissa/Mischa's somewhat, er, anorexic). In the season finale, Ryan discovers the whole rape scenario due to Seth's need to tell him everything, and races off to beat up/probably even kill Trey. When Marissa races off to stop Ryan after hearing about the acts that are about to conspire, she finds Trey and Ryan in Trey's motel bedroom, Trey about to bash Ryan's head in with a large hotel phone (this is believable). Marissa finds Trey's gun, which, in the fight, has been thrown across the room, and shoots him in the back.

Rating: Four stars.

SEASON 3-- "Can We Just Escape the O.C. Now, Bitch?" OK, so this is not only the most awful season of The O.C., but probably the most awful season of any show I've ever seen. Not only does Trey not die (he wakes up from his three month long coma), but neither does Jimmy, entangled with a mob-like scene (that's a laugh), and in the end, Schwartz is so desperate to save the show, and Mischa Barton so willing to get out, he resorts to killing her off! All of the stuff in between is just meaningless mumbling, like an old great-grandmother who just won't shut up, makes no sense whatsoever, and, in the future, it won't matter to you at all.

And I swear to God, I almost killed Schwartz when he reintroduced Jess. She's the most dreadful character ever introduced to the O.C. I have no idea what he meant for her to do.

And Johnny? What was that? Half a season taken up for him to die and Marissa to fall in love with him??

Rating: 1.5 stars.

Season 4-- "The O.C. Has Gone Back to Basics, Bitch." Second best season of the O.C. I've already described it in detail. The series finale was great, not like Six Feet Under's, but somewhat Six Feet Under-esque, with a music video type scenario where we jump forward in he future to see everyone's fate.

The O.C. was truly a great show, that was not really just a teen drama, but something more. It rivals the great shows of today, and, unlike some have said, is NOT an hour-long music video, but a truly great story.
Season 4 shows the O.C. at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Return to Form.......2007-06-27

Having loved the first season of The OC, but being slightly disappointed with seasons two and three, I found four to be a refreshing return to the show I loved. The replacement of Marissa's character with, in my opinion, a much more entertaining and likeable one helped turned this show around, and Ryan's new-found chattiness and humour also made the entire series fun to watch. Another extremely enjoyable part was the evolution of Julie Cooper-Nichol-Roberts as a character. I especially liked the finale, which ended perfectly: all storylines tied up well; sad and yet happy. I loved this final season of The OC, and would recommend it to any fan.

5 out of 5 stars The end's not near, it's here.......2007-06-26

With the death of Marissa Cooper bringing to an end the third season of The O.C., things certainly had to swing upward with the start of the fourth season. While the first few episodes of what turned out to be the final season of this addictive primetime soap opera were a little sluggish, the rest of the season was a return to the glory of season one, albeit a little too late to salvage the show.

Coming into season four, it was likely that this would be the last season for the show, one of my favorites and midway through the season it was announced that the show would conclude after 16 episodes. The announcement did give creator Josh Schwartz enough time to pen a great ending, one that wrapped the series up in a nice bow and presented it to the fans who had been with the show since day one.

But starting the season was tough, as it was six months after Marissa was killed in a traffic accident caused by bad boy Volchok. Ryan (Ben McKenzie) is still traumatized over the death of the girl who had changed his life, and as we open the season, he is working in a seedy bar and cage fighting. But, he has connections with Marissa's mom, Julie Cooper (Melinda Clarke), who reaches out to him when her private investigator finds out where Volchok is located.

Ryan's distance is hard on Sandy (Peter Gallagher) and Kirsten Cohen (Kelly Rowan), as they struggle with watching their adopted "son" fall on hard times. In the first few episodes, Ryan is finally convinced to come home to Newport Beach and begin mending his life and his heart.

The early part of the season takes viewers on a trip to Mexico as Ryan and Seth (Adam Brody) look for Volchok south of the border. Sandy and Kirsten follow and eventually, Volchok turns himself in, with Sandy's help, keeping Ryan from going off the deep end and killing him as he truly wanted to do. Sandy's act not only helps Volchok, but helps Ryan stay out of trouble and on the right side of the law.

From there, the season picks up and returns to the soapy drama and humor that made it such a hit in the first season. This season truly found the groove again, thanks in part to a great casting move, one that anybody watching season three would've found hard to believe.

The show runners brought in Taylor Townsend (the gorgeous Autumn Reeser) in season three, seemingly as a foil for the main characters. While she was only a guest star during that season, the new season finds her among the regular stars in the opening credits and her addition to the full time cast was a blessing. She truly brought a lot of the humor that the show needed. Taylor has been away in France in college for the six months since graduation and returns to California with a wedding ring and a need to escape her French husband, Henri-Michel. She finds her reason in Ryan, though their relationship takes some great twists and turns along the way. Ryan trying to express his feelings for Taylor is pretty funny and when Henri-Michel comes to Newport to woo Taylor back to France, it becomes obvious that he has feelings for her even if he can't completely express them.

The relationship with Taylor is Ryan's main story throughout the season, as he is still having a hard time letting go of the memory of Marissa and can't commit to Taylor the way she wants. Watching him struggle to figure out what he is feeling provides a good dose of humor.

Summer (the beautiful Rachel Bilson) has spent her first semester at Brown University where she has undergone major changes. Instead of the Newport girl that left Seth, she is now an environmental activist, wreaking havoc on the Rhode Island campus with her new friend Che (guest star Chris Pratt, who is hilarious in this role). When she gets kicked out of school for setting rabbits free from their cages, she returns to Newport and has to face the fact that her best friend is gone, something she had been putting on a back page during her activist stage.

Seth is working in a comic book store, leaving long messages on Summer's answering machine, longing for the days when he had Ryan and Summer to keep him company in Newport. He soon gets both of them back and things seem to return to "normal" for Seth despite the fact that Summer has obviously changed.

Julie and Kirsten continue as business partners in New Match, a high-end dating service that Julie turns into a male prostitution ring, temporarily ruining her friendship with Kirsten. It is through this business that Julie meets Gordon Bullitt (guest star Gary Grubbs) and Ryan's father, Frank Atwood (guest star Kevin Sorbo). Unable to decide, Julie dates both men, unable to make a choice in her life, despite the best efforts of her daughter Kaitlin (Willa Holland) to get her to choose the wealthy Bullitt.

The return of Ryan's father also brings trouble, much like the return of his mother and brother in previous seasons. Frank has been in jail and initially, Ryan wants nothing to do with him, but Frank lies to get Ryan to see him and the two slowly begin to mend the fences that came down quickly in the past. Ryan even helps Frank on the Julie front, teaming with Taylor to form "Team Frank."

Sandy and Kirsten get a major surprise on Kirsten's 40th birthday, as she reveals she is pregnant and instead of having an empty nest, the couple will be welcoming a new baby, though both parents cringe at the thought of raising another kid in Newport.

Perhaps the highlight of the season was the Chrismukkah episode, where Ryan and Taylor fall off a ladder and end up in an alternate Newport, where Sandy is mayor and married to Julie, Kirsten is still working at the Newport Group and married to Jimmy Cooper (guest star Tate Donovan), Seth is still a geek and Summer is marrying Che (or Chester as he's known in the alternate world). This episode allowed the stars to play different characters for a while and was pretty funny to watch.

The final few episodes wrap the series up very nicely. An earthquake rattles Orange County, putting everyone in danger and it is revealed that the Cohen house has been destroyed. This leads Ryan and Seth on a mission to Berkeley to try and purchase Sandy and Kirsten's first house even as a pregnant (with Frank's kid) Julie prepares to marry Bullitt (and yes, he knows). Sandy and Kirsten fly to Berkeley and end up having the baby in their old house, prompting Julie and Bullitt to move the wedding there as well, eventually convincing the new owners to sell the house to Sandy and Kirsten.

The final few minutes glimpses into the future of the characters, looking at what Ryan, Summer, Seth, Sandy, Kirsten, Julie, Kaitlin and the whole group is up to. It is a great way to end, with everyone seemingly in a good place, just where you might hope they'd be.

This set also has some good extras, which add to the release. Schwartz provides commentary on the series finale and it is well done and informative. There is a couple of good featurettes, one on the creation of Seth's holiday blend, Chrismukkah and another on the evolution of the Summer character, focusing on her transformation from Newport Barbie to well-rounded young woman. Her character did go through possibly the most changes throughout the four-year history of the show.

All told, the season wrapped up well, surely leaving viewers pleased and as a big fan of the show, I think this DVD set did a great job presenting the final 16 episodes.

5 out of 5 stars Ends On A High Note.......2007-06-24

After an amazing first season, decent second season, and kinda bad third season, one would expect that the fourth and final season for The OC would be the worst. Well, that wasn't the case. The show bounced back and even with substantially less episodes than the previou seasons, the show actually had its seconed best season ever, behind season one of course.

The best thing about season four was that the show actually found its sense of humor, which was absent for most of season two and all of season three. Taylor made for an excellent source of comedy and season four, and was a great addition to the cast for the final season. Kaitlin was also a great addition to the cast, and helped make probably the funniest OC episode ever (and my personal favorite of the season) 'The Summer Bummer' so amazing. The Series Finale was okay, not amazing, but there was definitely closure and that's really all you can ask for. Overall, season four was a great way to end the show. At the end of the day, you have to thank FOX for giving us these 16 episodes.

5 out of 5 stars Why did it get such a bad rep?.......2007-06-20

I didn't watch Season Four on TV, planning to buy it on DVD later, but I remember vividly that many people said that it was not as good as the first two seasons, and that the show had gone "down hill." I purchased the Fourth Season anyway -- and it is GREAT! I haven't laughed this much at a television drama in a while. I thoroughly enjoy Taylor Townsend -- more than I did Marissa. If you are an OC fan, Season Four will not disappoint.

Welcome to the dark side. At the end of The O.C.'s second season, Marissa (Mischa Barton) shoots the troubled Trey to stop him from strangling his brother, Ryan (Ben McKenzie). She saves her boyfriend's life, but it leads to her expulsion from Harbor High--just as she was to begin her senior year. Meanwhile, Ryan's guardian, Kirsten (Kelly Rowan), is doing time in rehab. It won't be easy for her to stay dry with two-faced resident Charlotte (Jeri Ryan, Shark) making every attempt to take advantage of her vulnerability. Ever the hothead, Ryan recovers in time to punch out the mean new dean (Eric Mabius, Ugly Betty), who expels him next. So, Kirsten's husband, Sandy (Peter Gallagher), hires a tutor, while Marissa attends public school where she falls in with the surfing crowd, including the besotted Johnny (Ryan Donowho). Arguably, Marissa's newly widowed mother, Julie (Melinda Clarke), is hit hardest when she finds that husband Caleb (Kirsten's father) didn't leave behind as much money as expected. Then the mansion is repossessed, and wild child Kaitlin (Willa Holland) returns from boarding school. And that's just the beginning of Julie's woes.

By the finale, two of these people will be gone forever, but it wouldn't be The O.C. if there weren't some bright spots along the way. College-bound couple Seth (Adam Brody) and Summer (Rachel Bilson) are still full of quips, the Tracy Flick-like Taylor (Autumn Reeser), who plays a bigger role in the next season, is a welcome addition, and the soundtrack is jam-packed with material from the likes of MIA, Gang of Four, Sufjan Stevens, Lady Sovereign, and the Subways, who appear in "The Anger Management." Sadly, this would be the last full season of The O.C. as only 16 episodes were produced for the fourth and final year. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars i love this season.......2007-07-03

no matter what anyone tells me. i thought that it was a nice breather from all the drama the first two seasons had but still had enough to make for a good TV show. i loved it. and the ending was unexpected, and i like that.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-06-14

Starts to get a little different than the first two seasons. Depressing finale. Makes you wonder if there could be a season 4. Still is enjoyable and fun to watch though.

4 out of 5 stars The season that drags it's feet........2007-05-23

The show takes a dip in Season 3. The dramatic events are not as powerful and interesting as they were in the previous seasons. There are moments that tend to drag a bit or lean on the annoying side in some sections. Still, there is enough dish and diving into these characters lives to keep one interested through this one, just lacks punch and the highly moving elements that The O.C. has excelled with in the past. The original actors do their best with what they're given to work with to keep us all engrossed, but be prepared for dragging moments. The plusses are the introduction to some new characters that have their brief light to shine including Autumn Reeser as "Taylor Townsend" and Cam Gigandet as "Kevin Volchok".

5 out of 5 stars I love the O.C. and this season.......2007-05-11

The O.C. is an unbelievable show. It is worth all of the waiting moments and all of the tears cried. All four of the seasons were awesome. I recomend all of them. After watching the episodes, you start to become obsessed. Anytime I turned on the O.C. it made my day! I HIGHLY reccomend the O.C. to any teenager! Although it was sad to see Marissa go, The show still was strong. I own all of the seasons (Except for 4..I'll get it in a couple of weeks) and I watch them all of the time over and over again.

Season 1 - A+++
Season 2 - A
Season 3 - B+
Season 4 - B

4 out of 5 stars The O.C........2007-05-10

So a lot of people weren't satisfied with season three of the O.C. Sure, it was a little weak compared to the other seasons. Johnny got overwhelming and Charlotte was around long past her welcome, but the impact Caitlin and Julie had on this season were amazing. Taylor was a bit annoying, but the scandal with her and the dean was a great twist.

This show has something for everybody; drama, humor, romance, excitement. Who really doesn't enjoy a good fight between Ryan and Volchek?

So, yes, it was a little weak, but this show and it's actors do such an amazing job that you can't help but be addicted to it. I am definately missing it, and am so grateful to TV on DVD to watch my favorite show again and again!

The drama was poured on aplenty in the second season of The O.C., as the sun-dappled denizens of Orange County found their lives massively upended and then some. At the end of the first season, the Cohen household had been reduced to two--parents Sandy and Kirsten (Peter Gallagher and Kelly Rowan)--as the boys had flown the coop, moody Ryan (Benjamin McKenzie) back to Chino and goofy Seth (Adam Brody) for the wide expanse of the Pacific (somehow ending up in Portland, Oregon). Once the prodigal sons returned home, thanks to a lot of persuading, both tried to mend relationships with their former girlfriends, Marissa (Mischa Barton) and Summer (Rachel Bilson). While friendships were solidified, everyone was dating someone else: Seth was with sultry club manager Alex (Olivia Wilde), Summer with sensitive polo jock Zach (Michael Cassidy), Ryan with smart girl Lindsay (Shannon Lucio), and Marissa with her family's pool guy and a bottle of vodka.

That's just the first half of this year of The O.C., and we haven't even gotten to the adults yet. Both Sandy and Kirsten found themselves tempted away by more-than-willing suitors, and wicked Julie (Melinda Clarke), Marissa's mom, cheated on new husband Caleb (Alan Dale) with ex-husband Jimmy (Tate Donovan). An extremely tangled web was woven, one from which the show almost didn't recover: the Lindsay storyline started out strong but went nowhere, Sandy's ex-girlfriend (Kim Delaney) was a bit of a bore, and the same-sex relationship between Marissa and Alex never really gelled. All seemed like sure-fire character additions, but it was the later peripheral characters, including Billy Campbell as a magazine editor smitten with Kirsten and the menacing yet sexy Logan Marshall-Green as Ryan's ex-con brother, who injected The O.C. with energy, and helped steer the show back on course. Brody, who became the show's de facto poster boy, got to show off his comedic talents with the wonderful Bilson (who rode the Zach-Seth-Summer romantic triangle most smoothly), and the heretofore sullen McKenzie got to lighten up quite a bit, until the show's violent yet effective season finale.

Forsaking a good amount of its comedy for drama, The O.C. got a little too seriously soapy, but its characters were so compelling you couldn't stop watching--even waiflike Marissa grew some edges. Clarke's scheming Julie was a constant pleasure to watch, and Rowan turned Kirsten's late-season downturn into a steely yet heartfelt portrayal. Despite the bumps, The O.C. remained one of the most exciting shows to look forward to week after week, a soap with smarts thanks to its fresh dialogue, gifted cast, and careening plot arcs. --Mark Englehart

I love the O.C. and the second season was just as great as the first. With 4 epsiodes per disk, you weren't constantly changing disks.

4 out of 5 stars One of the greatest shows on TV!.......2007-02-11

This is a great show! The second season is not as good as the first one, but definitelly still a great show and a good season; The season finale was really good, specially when they played "Hide and seek" from Imogen Heap. Probably the only let down is that it doesn't come with lots of extras, such as behind the scenes, featurettes, etc...

It looked like a standard teen soap on the outside, but once you scratched the surface of the glittery, sun-dappled Fox drama The O.C., you'd find underneath a number of surprisingly well-developed characters, fun plots that played around with their soap conventions, and some of the wittiest dialogue this side of an Aaron Sorkin show. The setup was pure high concept: hunky, brooding Ryan (Benjamin McKenzie) was a good kid from Chino starting to go bad, and thanks to the interference of his lawyer, Sandy Cohen (Peter Gallagher), finds himself whisked away from the wrong side of the tracks to the mansions and manicured lawns of Orange County. Soon, Ryan finds himself living in the Cohens' pool house, involved with troubled rich girl Marissa (Mischa Barton), and bristling against the societal confines of his new home, as the people may be richer but they're just as screwed up as anyone else. Still, somehow, he manages to bring out the humanity of the superficial people around him, and they become all the better for knowing him.

Okay, enough with the Beverly Hills, 90210 scenario--what The O.C. turned out to be was the most addictive TV soap in recent memory, and one with a brain to boot. Smarter than Melrose Place, sexier than 90210, funnier than Felicity, and not as enamored of itself as Dawson's Creek, The O.C. reveled in clever and hilarious dialogue (the pilot episode earned a WGA nomination) and quirky, eccentric characters. Most noteworthy was breakout star Adam Brody, who as Ryan's geeky newfangled brother-type Seth practically stole the teen heartthrob mantle away from Russell Crowe-lookalike McKenzie. Barton was a bit of a blank as the troubled Marissa, but her best pal, the blissfully superficial Summer, was played by Rachel Bilson as the perfect supporting character in a dizzy farce. And the adults, especially Gallagher and Kelly Rowan as the supportive Cohens, grounded the other half of the show in you know, like, maturity. Not that The O.C. ever forgot the fun that was to be had in TV-land, as most every other episode ended with a fistfight or someone falling into a pool--sometimes both. Here was a soap you could purely enjoy without guilt. --Mark Englehart

4 out of 5 stars Best Season Of The Series But ???.......2007-06-05

This was by far the best Season of The OC, but just a coupe of things that i didn't understand like the fact that everybody was caucasian, i mean i know Newport is an expensive area in California but give me a break not one Asian,Hispanic, or African American in a State with a big hispanic and Asian community was a joke. Also the guy who played Ryan wasn't the best choice to play that part. overall though is a pretty entertaining show, unfortunately Season 2,3, and 4 aren't as good especially 3 and 4.

5 out of 5 stars AGREED-the onli good season of OC.......2007-04-04

when i first heard oc i didnt even care about it but when i watched it once i became addicted this first season is awesome really its so real life except the richness of the people its great so i looked forward to the second season but i was rather disapointed and the third season was even much worse so if u want to watch OC just buy the first episode

His comedy is right on, I first saw him on the Comedy channel and then on You Tube. I found myself playing his bits over and over for family and friends. Finally I decided I had to see his whole show, you will not be diappointed.

4 out of 5 stars a kneeslapper.......2006-10-20

despite his rude sexual humor, Pablo is definetly one of the funniest guys in stand up comedy. His sound effects are legendary and his face expressions are hilarious! Great DVD, you will have fun listening to it.
Although Pablo isn't 100% funny throughout the whole show, he get's pretty much all of your attention anyways.

Greate standup. For the price is just excelent you get a dvd and a cd. Pablo is hilarious and his impretions are probably the best thing on the dvd. If you don't like comedians that use a lot of profanity then probably this isn't for you. Great Buy.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Funny.......2006-03-04

All I got to say is this guy is hilarious! His ability to imitate people, music, and other sounds is what really makes him funny in my opinion. If you like laughing, then buy this dvd.

3 out of 5 stars A Heartwarming Comedy Disguised As A College Film.......2007-01-30

Inspiration comes in many different forms. Some people see a painting and are inspired to become artists. For some the right song could give them the courage to ask a girl they love out on a date. Or if you're name is Shaun Brumder (Colin Hanks, and yes, he's the son of Tom Hanks) you find inspiration in a book lying in the sand on the beach. This book, written by famous author Marcus Skinner (who does not appear to have an official website according to Google), gives Shaun the inspiration he needs to drop his surfboard and become a famous author. Keep in mind, this jolt of inspiration comes to him after the fact that he grew up in Orange County (a hick town), after the fact that he's been living with his deranged mother, crippled step dad, and doped up brother (Jack Black, who plays the kind of brother you wish were a poster boy for birth control), and AFTER the fact that one of his surfing buddies dies while riding the "Ultimate Wave!"

After showing his counselor a copy of his story "Orange County," Shaun gets a rude surprise when it's discovered that the counselor sent in his story with someone else's school records to Stanford, which is the only school Shaun applied for (kids, may this be a lesson to you to listen to your parents when they tell you to have a back-up school ready). After this bit of information Shaun asks the counselor "What are you stupid?" Yes Shaun, she is stupid. Pretty much everyone in this movie is stupid. They have to be, I suppose, or else the movie wouldn't be funny. Take for example, Shaun's tree hugger for a girlfriend Ashley (Schuyler Fisk), who secretly prayed that Shaun wouldn't get into Stanford. The last thing you want is a girlfriend who can't pray for you properly. When worse comes to worse though, Shaun's brother Lance suggests that the three of them go to Stanford and demand that they let Shaun in.

Thankfully, this is not a road trip movie. It's not even a buddy movie. It's about finding inspiration in the right places, and having to follow your dreams despite the really, really annoying people you have to deal with on a daily basis. Movies about college kids who are stupid and do stupid things normally aren't very good. There are many reasons for this, not the least of which is that these movies are normally about, well...stupid kids that do stupid things. There's only so much stupid you can take before you want to rip someone's heads off. I see stupid people do stupid things in real life. For free. But "Orange County" is more then a movie about stupid people. Well...okay, no it's not. This IS a film about stupid people, it just happens to be a good one! The storyline is over-the-top, the characters do things that no sane person would do in public, and farting is on the menu.

And yet...there is something genuine and sweet about the characters and their relationships with each other. I couldn't for the life of me explain why I liked these people as much as I did, but I found it within a monolog by Kevin Kline near the end of the film. Without spoiling the speech (and maybe the end of the movie), the secret behind this movies appeal is likely that everyone cares for each other. They may have their own odd ways of showing it, but care for each other they do. The friendship is real and the love is real. The movie is also kind towards the characters, not mocking them like most stupid kid movies do, but laughing with the bad deck of cards they are dealt. This movie was made by MTV, which means it was probably an accident that this movie turned out as good as it did.

That said, I must give them credit for this. The movie also inspired me in some silly, non-meaning sense that I decided to write a review for a movie that is five years old. Yes, I guess inspiration truly does come from the strangest of places.

Rating: *** and a half stars

5 out of 5 stars Jack Black, Mike White and Orange County.......2007-01-08

I remember seeing the trailers for Orange County back when it was out in theatres, and when it was fresh on DVD. It's actually a lot more thoughtful than it looked.

Shaun Brumder is a writer, who lives in Orange County, California. He wants to apply to Standford University so he can work with Marcus Skinner, tha author who inspired him to write. Trouble is, the application got mixed up, so someone else got to Stanford thanks to Shaun's hard work, and his family scared some connections away who came for dinner, vowing that Shaun would never go to Stanford ever. Shaun's brother, Lance (Jack Black) has an idea. They can all drive to Stanford and talk to the admissions Dean (Harold Ramis, Egon from Ghostbusters). He'll understand the mixup and the troubles when he sees Shaun's real SAT scores. Trouble follows though, and Shaun's hopes for college go up in smoke, almost literally. Will he be able to be a writer?

There's a lot of guest appearances in this film, which is good for a film all about characters, I thought. John Lithgow, Ben Stiller, Kevin Kline. It was interesting seeing Harold Ramis again. I don't see him in a lot of films these days, and I'm a big Ghostbusters fan. It's funny the way the characters of Orange County are done. They do some pretty silly things, and yet its just the things they do that are ridiculous, there's a heart to each of the characters, I thought. The actors seem to love playing them, and they're memorable and well written, and its not done in a malicious way. The Californian scenery went well with everything that was going on too, I thought.

Special features include deleted scenes and little promotional extras with unique material in them. There's also an audio commentary.

Worth a look if you're interested. Four and a half stars

5 out of 5 stars Wow...........2005-11-24

I avoided seeing this movie like the plague. In fact, I only watched it for the first time because I was extremely, extremely bored and had lots of time to kill. Why did I avoid seeing this film? Because it had all the marks of a teen comedy, and let's face it, the teen comedy is the most shameful of movie genres. It manages to inspire the laziest and lamest contributions to the film industry possible.

But enough of that.

You should see Orange County. Immediately. Why? Because it's not like most teen comedies in that is smart, insightful, and witty. It even makes slap-stick comedy feel more cerebral (okay, perhaps I'm exaggerating, but you get the gist). Sure it has some of the ubiquitous potty humor, but overall, it's just well-crafted and plain hilarious, even for a more refined taste. The end, I guess, is an appeal to the sappy and sentimental, but generally the film has so many moments of genius I feel passing up on it is just too great a mistake.

So watch it!

5 out of 5 stars one of THE most underrated comedies........2005-11-05

I hate that this movie isn't considered at least a classic for its genre. This is my favorite comedy that came out this year and it has a bit more depth than the usual teen comedy, a bit more absurdity and a lot more laughs. Truly the best cast i've seen together in a comedy.. I just don't get it. This movie is hilarious. Great performances and great laughs that are never cheap. Love it.

The necessary first DVD of Social Distortion is a vivid concert filled with the songs that every punk-rocker carry in his heart when comes the inevitable separation. I never seen social D. in concert so I picked this up today at a record store. I should,ve bought the Agnostic Front video. Oh well, I think maybe because I havent seen social D. perform in the old days that I just really didn't care too much for this live shoW. I seen Rancid live a few weeks ago in concert and they straight up kicked a.., without Tim mumbleing pointless political bullsh.t. Rancid's performance was really amazing and the singer Tim didn't have to include anything about our president and all. If someone doesn't like the president that's perfectly kewl, but don't bring it up at a rock show please. I feel Mike Ness was either stoned or drunk during this show or maybe even plain arogant. I lossed respect for him, but not the band. He even disses Guns n Roses (one of the best rock bands around). What the hell was he thinking? Social Distortions music is good and their new stuff I think is laid out well, but until Mike Ness gets an attitude adjustment, I might have to not waste any more money on these guys and just stick with buying an item from a more appreciated band like Rancid. Rancid in my opinion is a hell of alot better than Social D., also Guns n Roses should be more recognized for their powerful impact on 80's/ 90's rock n roll, actually rock n roll in general. Any artist to go on stage and bash other bands to me must be jealous or feel bad for themselves. I thought Mike Ness got off drugs and the feeling of angst toward society. I honestly think he is a hypocrite and a liar after I watched this video. Shooks, He still might be shooting up for all his fans know, since he isn'e up front at all in this video with anyone, but stuck on himself it seems. I wasted $15 and want my money back, but oh well, at least I know that Mike Ness has made an A.. of himself to a once called fan like myself. Save your money, don't buy.

2 out of 5 stars Are we watching the same DVD?.......2006-08-30

I have seen SD eight times and really like the band alot. But this DVD sucks. The fake lines trying to make this thing look old are annoying. If it wasnt for that this video would get a better rating. Who ever ruined this should be fired. If you want to see how a DVD should be produced/shot, check out the Blasters DVD.
