A glossy romantic comedy, The Best Man centers on four college friends and the women in their lives, all brought back together for a wedding. Taye Diggs (How Stella Got Her Groove Back) plays the title character, a young writer whose first novel is a barely fictionalized account of his college days, featuring barely fictionalized versions of all his friends. This novel hasn't yet been released, but ambitious TV producer Nia Long (Soul Food) has snagged an advance copy in the hopes of getting an early interview with Diggs. Unfortunately, when this advance copy begins circulating among the college gang, they discover it reveals some secrets that may have a disastrous effect on the wedding. The Best Man features a handsome, charming cast and a propulsive story, but the female characters are poorly developed and the male banter is, to say the least, chauvinistic. This banter is mostly to comic effect, but by the end it still leaves a sour taste that the movie's happy ending doesn't counter. With a particularly strong performance by Terrence Howard as an aimless but relentlessly honest member of the college quartet. --Bret Fetzer

It's still one of the sweetest kisses onscreen, up there with Bergman and Grant, Bogey and Bacall: the moment when pampered purebred Lady and streetwise mongrel Tramp, sharing a moonlit plate of spaghetti in an alley behind an Italian café, unknowingly slurp the same strand, and suddenly find their mouths meeting in surprise and tenderness. Ah, puppy love. Lady and the Tramp is a delight of animation and surprisingly deep character development, given that the stars are all dogs. Lady, an adorable Cocker Spaniel, feels neglected when her owners become distracted by the pending birth of a baby. But the last straw is clueless Aunt Sarah's appearance with her conniving Siamese cats (among Disney's most creatively evil villains), who wreak havoc on Lady's blissful home life. Soon Lady is off on an adventure in the streets, where the savvy Tramp takes her under his paw. The lessons of friendship and loyalty, of integrity--not to mention trusting in the kindness of strangers--ring true to delighted children and adults alike. And unlike many Disney films, there's no real violence, only challenges that smart dogs (including a tough-talking vamp named Peg, voiced sublimely by Peggy Lee, who also wrote the songs), banding together, can tackle. The animation is terrific; the scene where we first meet Tramp shows him rinsing off under a pipe, and his subsequent shaking-off of the water follows the detailed rippling up and down his back that any dog lover will recognize. And is there any song more romantic than "Bella Notte"? Bellissima! --A.T. Hurley

5 out of 5 stars Lady and the Tramp.......2007-06-26

One of Disney's most endearing family classics, "Tramp" is a marvel of lively animation, bright voice acting, and sensational songwriting, courtesy of the inimitable Peggy Lee (who also voices the sinister twin kitties, Si and Am.) Watching a pampered female pooch fall for a declassé but charismatic male doggie is not only fun but enlightening about the magic of mutual attraction. And the famous spaghetti-slurping scene leading to a surprise first kiss is charming no matter how many times you view it. Highlights include the vamp-y "He's a Tramp" and "Siamese Cat Song."

5 out of 5 stars It's Lady And The Tramp And We Love It!.......2007-06-25

LADY AND THE TRAMP is my favorite of all the Disney animated films. It has great memorable characters from the down on her luck show dog Peg (voiced by the fabulous Peggy Lee who also voices a couple of other characters) to Aunt Sarah's sly pair of Siamese cats. The music is also among the best from Disney with "Bella Noche", Quiet As a Snowflake" and especially "He's A Tramp" with the wonderful dog pound chorus as well as a couple of other memorable songs. The film touts the virtures of both pure bred dogs like the beautiful sweet Cocker Spaniel Lady and also the advantages of mixed breeds like her clever Heinz 57 mate Tramp. This movie is a must for dog lovers and can be enjoyed by all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Lady and the Tramp.......2007-05-18

Lady and the Tramp was one of my favorite movies in childhood. Watching it again only supports my endeared feelings I have had for so many years. I am glad I was able to watch, go back and experience like I did when I was a child. This movie, I will always hold dear. The talent has transcended into this decade and has kept the meaning of romance and true love alive with the music and animation.

When egghead Scotty Smalls moves to town just before the summer vacation of 1962, his first priority is to make friends. He heads to the nearby sandlot only to humiliate himself before the local kids, but star player Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez befriends the awkward boy, teaches him the basics of baseball, and welcomes him to the team. It's a summer filled with camaraderie and fun until Smalls hits his first home run. Problem is, Smalls's home run sends his stepfather's "Babe Ruth" autographed baseball into a neighboring yard that's patrolled by a snarling, slobbering monster called "The Beast." Creativity reigns and hilarity ensues when the boys risk everything to retrieve the ball. A final heroic encounter with "The Beast" and his owner yields some very surprising results. Action, humor, and friendship permeate this 101-minute film appropriate for ages 5 and older. Rated PG due to name-calling and some pubescent behavior. --Tami Horiuchi

But that changes when the leader of the neighborhood gang recruits him to play on the nearby sandlot field. It's the beginning of a magical summer of baseball, wild adventures, first kisses, and fearsome confrontations with the dreaded Beast and its owner (James Earl Jones) who live behind the left field fence. Soon nine boys have become best friends, Scotty is part of a team, and their leader has become a local legend in this hilarious and warmhearted comedy.

5 out of 5 stars My grandson's favorite.......2007-05-22

He is 7. We watched it once awhile ago. He talked so much about that great movie with the big dog that I finally sent him one of his own!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic, lots of laughs!.......2007-05-07

Great movie for a baseball lover or someone who loves to laugh!

I had this on VHS for a bit and was glad when it was releasedon DVD. Now it will last FOR-EV-ERR!

5 out of 5 stars A funny and classic baseball-worship kind of movie.......2007-04-12

Scotty Smalls moves to Los Angeles in the early 60's just two weeks before the 5th grade school year ends, which isn't enough time to make friends before summer vacation. He's still getting used to his new step-father and doesn't know how to catch or throw a baseball, and to make matters worse doesn't even know who the "Great Bambino" is. Some of the neighborhood kids gather every day at "the sandlot," their own personal baseball kingdom, and he tries to casually join them. But it isn't until Bennie Rodriguez, the best and most ardent player of them all, asks him to join and gives him the confidence he needs to learn to play. It makes for the best summer of his life and lifelong friendships, especially when he unknowingly uses a baseball signed by Babe Ruth, and hits it over the fence into the yard of "The Beast," a huge baseball-eating dog.

This is one of those classic baseball-worship movies on a par with "Field of Dreams" and other favorites. Plus, it's a great family movie with few profanities - it's funny and the things the kids do and say resonate with everyone whether or not you grew up playing another sport or in another time period. My kids love to watch it regularly, and I'm impressed with how good some of the children actors are (James Earl Jones also has a bit part at the end). I especially like the scene where they play baseball against the "rich kids" on their real baseball field (mostly because it's the field where I played Little-League as a kid - which wasn't on the "rich" side of town and it's not really LA!), but my kids like the pool scene.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie for young baseball players.......2007-03-31

Bought this for my 8 year old grandson for his birthday and although he never heard of it, he absolutely loved it and had to go out and buy the Sandlot 2 right away! Nice, clean, fun with a learning behind it (of course).

5 out of 5 stars Great classic comedy!.......2007-06-27

I used to watch these guys every Sunday morning when I was a kid. When I seen they finally came onto DVD and especially 8 episodes per volume, you just can't go wrong for the price. In my opinion, they were the best comedy duo there ever was. Some of their best movies exist within this volume including my favorite, Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein. I ordered via standard shipping and received them within a weeks time, packaged nicely, and in great condition. If you love classic, clean comedy, then this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars A. & C.::::Vol. 1,2,3.......2007-05-22

All the movies were 'clean', no fuzz, no lines, clear sharp pictures. Unlike some other reviews, these DVD's played perfectly with no problems! Definitely worth the money if you're a true Abbott and Costello fan...well worth it even if it's just old comedy you enjoy!!

3 out of 5 stars More turkeys than gems.......2007-05-22

While there are a couple of really good films on this set, the majority of them are sub-par vehicles. These aren't exactly films that would make a big fan out of someone just getting into A&C. At least this set has been updated to have the eight films on four single-sided discs as opposed to the problem-plagued earlier version which had eight films on two flipper-discs, although the main menus, oddly, haven't been updated as well. They're still designed in a way that gives the impression that two other films are on the flip side.

'A&C Meet Frankenstein' (1948) is widely held as a classic, though I personally find it rather overrated. I liked it more the second time I saw it, but I still honestly don't get why so many people feel it's their best and funniest movie. Who knows, perhaps I'd find it a lot funnier if I'd seen it in the original theatrical run or on television as a child. Although I do think that the plot is pretty strong, and of the three monsters, Bela Lugosi's reprisal of Dracula had the most depth.

'Mexican Hayride' (1948) has some fun scenes, such as when Joe (Lou) is getting his entire wardrobe torn off of his body in an attempt to get rid of everything with his real initials and the later scene in the bullring, but overall it's a pretty mediocre vehicle. Its biggest fault is probably that it was originally a book and Broadway show, not a movie script originally written for them, and so didn't really fit even after being reworked to make it an A&C vehicle.

'A&C Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff' (1949) was one of my favorites on here. It's a great murder mystery, complete with some touches of film noir, and leaves the viewer guessing till the very end. Although in spite of the title, there aren't really any elements of horror in here, and Boris Karloff's character is relegated to a secondary character too quickly. There might not be a lot of funny scenes in it, but the great plot makes up for it.

'A&C in the Foreign Legion' (1950) isn't their most memorable, nor is the premise that novel (just how many comedies have had a similar setting?), though there are a lot of good scenes, such as the opening scene in the boxing ring, the auction for the harem girls, and when Bud and Lou are wandering through the desert and having mirages. It might not be as sophisticated as some of their other films, but I enjoyed it quite a bit.

'A&C Meet the Invisible Man' (1951), one of their better entries in the 'Meet' series, is possibly my favorite film on this set. There's a great plot, and the special effects are rather impressive for the era before computer-generated special effects. Though a lot of the gags center around the fact that Tommy (the boxer who is trying to clear his name of a false murder charge) is invisible, I didn't feel that these jokes got predictable or formulaic, since there were so many different jokes to be mined from this premise instead of the same ones over and over again. And how could any movie not be funny when there's an invisible character?

'Comin' 'Round the Mountain' (1951) is pretty weak, not least because, like many of their earliest films, it's cluttered up by superfluous musical numbers (which seem to drag on forever). The movie even starts with one of them, which isn't a good sign. Among the few genuine highlights are Lou's scene with the witch and the effects her love potion has on everyone who drinks it. The spoof of the Hatfield and McCoy feud could have been funnier, but the hillbilly characters just weren't utilised well enough, particularly the pistol-wielding granny, who should have been given more to do. Bud's character also doesn't get a whole lot to do. It's enjoyable enough, just nothing really memorable.

'Lost in Alaska' (1952) is near the bottom of the barrel. I was massively unimpressed by it. What few humorous moments it contains are all in the first half, and even then they're not that hysterically funny. They were really wasted in this one, and it's not even redeemed by a good ending scene. Bud's character also seems like more of a jerk than usual here.

'A&C Go to Mars' (1953) is generally regarded as one of their worst also, but I found it a bit better than its reputation. The Mardi Gras scenes are pretty funny, as are the two guys playing the escaped convicts who end up joining them on the rocket, and the opening scene of Lou with the children at the orphanage is really heartwarming, particularly knowing how much he cared for disadvantaged children in real life. Most of the rest, however, falls pretty flat. The sci-fi bits are badly dated and such obvious products of the Fifties, the scenes on Venus are pretty ridiculous (although the Queen's truth-detectors are kind of funny), and the last third or so of the movie seems really rushed. Those Venusian women must have been really desperate for men if they were attracted to these four guys! (Even Bud, whom I think looked rather handsome in their earliest films, was looking pretty old and tired by this point.) Overall, it's the type of thing that only a young child or someone who first saw this as a child decades ago is apt to find that funny.

All in all, while there are some genuinely good movies on here, and while the other ones all have their moments, this is something likely to be enjoyed more by completists and hardcore fans than new or casual fans. It's a shame A&C weren't given high-quality scripts worthy of their talents more often and had to go through the motions in turkeys like 'Lost in Alaska' and 'Comin' 'Round the Mountain' so often in the later part of their career.

4 out of 5 stars Abbott and Costello on Parade.......2007-05-07

I remember the great antics of Abbott and Costello from the earliest days of my childhood. That's why I purchased the DVDs covering their film career.
I was not at all disappointed with the quality of the transfer from film to DVD; watching the DVDs was very much like watching the films in a theatre. And of course, Abbott and Costello are as entertaining for me now as much as they were back "in the good ol' days."
I would not, however, recommend these great DVDs for young people; this duo was at its best back in the forties and fifties, but they would be considered corny in this day and age. So, if your fifty--or more--by all means, shell out the cash and enjoy the laughable, crazy, and slapstick antics of one of the most famous comic pairs ever in the business. If you happen to be young, unless you have an unusual interest in the the film industry, skip these DVDs for something a little more modern and sophisticated.

Walt Disney studios had previously adapted Sheila Burnford's classic animal-adventure novel The Incredible Journey in 1963, and the story proves just as durable in this popular 1993 version, in which the heroic trio of animals are given voices provided by Don Ameche, Michael J. Fox, and Sally Field. They don't actually speak (like the clever critters in Babe), but we hear their "voices" as the lost household pets--Shadow the golden retriever, Chance the bulldog, and Sassy the cat--survive a harrowing series of adventures as they struggle to find their way home. Perfect entertainment for kids, this frequently clever movie offers an abundance of wildlife and beautiful location scenery, and the vocal performances by Ameche, Fox, and Field are surprisingly effective. A hit with parents and children alike, the film was followed by a sequel in 1996. --Jeff Shannon

Christopher Guest, the man behind Waiting for Guffman, turns his comic eye on another little world that takes itself a bit too seriously: the world of competitive dog shows. Best in Show follows a clutch of dog owners as they prepare and preen their dogs to win a national competition. They include the yuppie pair (Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock) who fear they've traumatized their Weimaraner by having sex in front of him; a suburban husband and wife (Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara) with a terrier and a long history of previous lovers on the wife's part; the Southern owner of a bloodhound (Guest himself) with aspirations as a ventriloquist; and many more. Following the same "mockumentary" format of Spinal Tap and Guffman, Best in Show takes in some of the dog show officials, the manager of a nearby hotel that allows dogs to stay there, and the commentators of the competition (a particularly knockout comic turn by Fred Willard as an oafish announcer). The movie manages to paint an affectionate portrait of its quirky characters without ever losing sight of the ridiculousness of their obsessive world. Almost all of the scenes were created through improvisation. While lacking the overall focus of a written script, Best in Show captures hilarious and absurd aspects of human behavior that could never be written down. The movie's success is a testament to both the talent of the actors and Guest's discerning eye. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Awful.......2007-06-14

Save your money. Unless you're a dog freak there's nothing here but the opportunity to see some usually-funny actors embarrass themselves by attempting improvised humour. Funny actors aren't necessarily funny people as this film repeatedly proves.

4 out of 5 stars What does the smell of victory smells like to you -- just don't step in it........2007-05-28

I always thought that comedies are usually the easiest films to write which possibly explains why we have so many. Yet, 'Best in Show' is somewhat different compared to the comedies presented to us here. Directed again by Guest was for a large part improvised according to the film's documentary and is quite different from today's standards. This story is mainly about The Mayflower Kennel Dog Show which is like the Super Bowl of dog shoes; and in documentary style this film showcases the incredibly over-the-top preparations the dog owners take part in for this show.

The film constantly cuts from interviews with these zany characters to actual interactive footage shot while on their way to the dog show. All in documentary style that a person who is uneducated about the film can easily mistake for a genuine documentary. This film contains an all-star cast that includes actors who really know how to act and that capture the essence of each scene. This film is lined with scene after scene of hilarious bits focusing upon these characters and the manner in which they handle their canines like minor deities.

Guest also takes part as one of the major characters of course and plays Harlan Pepper; a fishing-store owner who travels to the Kennel Dog Show in his Winnebago in hopes of capturing the championship. He is just one of the many developed and layered characters that is fun to watch. Other characters include Parker Posey as a sexually deprived nagging wife who becomes insane with anger after losing her dog's toy. Eugene Levy plays the part of terribly jealous husband born with two left feet to Catherine O'Hara who plays his wife who cannot stop running into men she slept with in the past. Other characters include Michael McKean who plays a homosexual dog owner who steals the movie away from the others when sharing scenes with his male companion during the film's many interview sequences. Fred Willard who takes the art of improvisation to new heights as the dog's shows color commentator is quite funny.

As far as breaking new ground is concerned, this film does not. Aforesaid, it is unconventional and different from others but in the end is a different film with regular results. This film does contain elements that most films do not such as richly textured characters and great acting, but at it's heart cannot break free from the monotonous tone a documentary usually brings with it. Even though it is a mock documentary that does not take itself seriously, it still is a bit over-the-top. Resulting in a different and unconventional film that will best be viewed by fans and new ones--like my self.

5 out of 5 stars Silly silly human race.......2007-05-22

If you can laugh at the absolute absurdness of human behavior, dont look any further than Christopher Guest and company. Not only here, but ANY of the classics Guest has created (WITH THE UNFORTUNATE EXCEPTION OF THE HORRID"FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION". Christopher missed the mark big time with that one.)
Anywho...Best in Show,Mighty Wind,Spinal Tap...!!!! Start the DELICIOUS insanity!!!

4 out of 5 stars Best In Show.......2007-05-21

If you have ever watched the Westminister dog show on tv then you will recognize what this movie is about. From the begining to the end you can't help but laugh at some of the crazyness and funny things that go on before and behind the dog show competation. Everything the owners go through just to make sure their dog is the one to take home the trophy for best dog in show is almost like the real dog show. Where others go real exreme measures to get their dog to win. I couldn't stop laughing throught his fuuny and cute movie and you will also.

5 out of 5 stars Two paws up: Sit, Speak, Stay for Best in Show.......2007-05-15

There is no gray area here--you either love this movie or hate it. It's by far one of my all-time favorites, so know that this review is heavily biased towards a "two paws up." If you catch yourself inexplicably watching those dog shows on TV, if you love your dog more than most humans and if you are entertained by those actors from great movies such as "A Mighty Wind" or "Waiting for Guffman," you'll be all over this movie. From shih tzus to standard poodles, from two left feet (literally) to a missing "Busy Bee," you'll be laughing out loud or, you'll be swearing at me for loving this movie....but, I figure that just means you aren't a lover of canines and witty, understated humor.

When a Great Dane puppy is raised with a litter of Dachshunds, it naturally thinks it's a Dachshund too--even when it grows to 10 times the size. Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette star as the hapless couple who took in the galumphing dog, which wreaks havoc on their house and home. The Ugly Dachshund is mostly a series of spectacular disasters (the doggy demolition of Jones's art studio will delight kids and reduce adults to nervous wrecks), but it's held together by the convincing domestic banter of Jones and Pleshette (who was quite a dish in 1965); the pair went on to star in a couple of other Disney live-action flicks, Bluebeard's Ghost and The Shaggy D.A.. Despite some racial and gender stereotypes, it's a good-natured and amusing movie in the Disney mold. Also featuring classic character actor Charlie Ruggles (Bringing Up Baby, The Parent Trap). --Bret Fetzer

A decade after their last hilarious short, the Oscar-winning A Close Shave, Claymation wonders Wallace and Gromit return for a full-length adventure. Daffy scientist Wallace (voiced by Peter Sallis) and his heroic dog Gromit are doing well with their business, Anti-Pesto, a varmint-hunting outfit designed to keep their English town safe from rabbits chomping on prized vegetables. Wallace meets Lady Tottington (Helena Bonham Carter), who appreciates Wallace's humane way of dealing with rabbits (courtesy of the Bun-Vac 6000), and sets up a rivalry with the gun-toting Victor Quartermaine (Ralph Fiennes, enjoying himself more than ever). Creator Nick Park, with co-director/writer Steve Box, delivers a story worthy of the 85-minute running time, although it stretches the act a bit; the formula plays better shorter, but the literally hand-crafted film is a joy to watch. Taking a chapter from classic horror films, a giant were-rabbit is soon on the prowl, and the town is up in arms, what with the annual vegetable contest close at hand. (Anyone who's seen the previous three shorts knows who saves the day.) Never content to do something simply when the extravagant will do, W&G's lives are filled with whimsical Rude Goldberg-style devices, and the opening number showcasing their alarm system is pure Aardman Animation at its finest. Even though there's a new twist here--a few mild sight gags aimed at adults--this G-rated film will delight young and old alike as Park, like team Pixar, seems incapable of making anything but an outstanding film. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars A fun movie for the whole family.......2007-06-05

The adults love this film and so do the kids. What can I say except that it is such a fun film...the characters are lovable and there are laughs galore. Wallace is so sweet when he falls for Lady Tottington and Gromit is always there to get him out of trouble. Five stars!

5 out of 5 stars A classic! .......2007-05-16

This was my introduction to Wallace and Gromit, two very charming characters. Wallace, a cheese-obsessed British chap, and Gromit, his silent but very expressive sidekick dog (who can make tea, drive, etc.) have a humane pest control business named "Anti-pesto." Yes the puns run rampant throughout this film, from the jar of "Middle Age Spread" on the kitchen table, to the classic novels with altered cheese-themed titles ("Waiting for Gouda," "Grated Expectations," etc.)among many others. The film is rich with texture and humor. The sets are delightful, from the charming British neighborhoods to the manor house of Lady Tottington. The plot is about an experiment of Wallace's that goes awry leading to the creation of a giant, vegetable devouring rabbit that comes out at night with the full moon and devours the gardens of the townfolk, including the prized oversize vegetables they're nurturing for a vegetable competition at Tottington's estate. Tottington summons Anti-pesto to contain the beast, much to the chagrin of her bunny-blood-thirsty hunter fiance, Victor Quartermaine, who would love to "bag her bunny" and be the local hero with a furry trophy. The film is beautiful to watch and full of visual humor and clever dialogue and gags of all sorts. Pay attention to Lady Tottington's outfits suggestive of certain vegetables and some mild humor in the style of Benny Hill. Be sure to read anything in print--the tongue-in-cheek humor is planted throughout the film. The music score is wonderful and the filming style is very effective. Be sure to watch the behind the scenes video to gain an appreciation of how painstakingly and lovingly the film was put together by its creators. My husband and 3 year old daughters love this movie. There's humor for everyone, any gender, any age. We watch it all the time. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars 14 carrot movie.......2007-05-12

This is about a clever a movie as I have ever seen. From the claymation (if that is the correct word) to the story, and especially the puns. There is always something new to find in re-watching it. I get the impression that a lot of time and care went into the making of this movie in every aspect, and it is hilarious, a spoof of "horror" movies, a critique of the British social structure, and the list goes on and on. I am not a Brit, and there are probably things I don't get, but this is a ninth inning home run in the world series of a movie.

5 out of 5 stars Entertainment plus for all ages.......2007-05-11

This movie is awesome. It is very entertaining for adults and kids alike. And the characters are adorable. This is one of those movies you can watch over and over again.
Gromit has always been one of my favourite characters and he shines in this film. Another winner from the guys that brought us chicken run, this is their best yet...

4 out of 5 stars the world's first vegetarian horror movie.......2007-05-11

The movie by itself is fun to watch, but the DVD is full of extras that both kids and claymation fans will enjoy. In addition to deleted/alternative scenes and director Nick Park's commentary, there are the following featurettes:

Goes to Hollywood - traces the history of Wallace and Gromit from when Nick Park was still in film school trying to make A Grand Day Out to The Wrong Trousers (1993) and A Close Shave (1995) winning Oscars for Best Short Animated Film. It includes a clip of Wallace speaking in French, and shorter ones of him doing German, Chinese and Japanese.

Behind the Scenes - shows not only the sets but also the voices behind Wallace (Peter Sallis), Lady Tottington (Helena Bonham Carter) and Victor (Ralph Fiennes).

Studio Tour - an assistant director guides us through possibly every division of Aardman Studios in Bristol -- the rigger workshop, the model-making workshop, the place where they do the background painting, the editing room, even the canteen...

How to Build a Bunny - a model-maker demonstrates how the rabbits in the movie were made, starting from the wire armature to the shaping of the plasticine and the adding of beads for the eyes

Stage Fright - a short claymation feature

Cracking Contraptions - Wallace's inventions in action: the Snoozatron, Shopper 13, and the 525 Crackervac

There are also games and activities meant specially for kids.

Much better than your average cop-and-dog movie (e.g., K-9), Turner and Hooch is really a love story about a control freak (Tom Hanks) who gradually resigns to the messy chaos of a sweet hulk of a pooch named Hooch. The excuse for this relationship is that the dog can identify a murderer and Hanks needs him, but the film is really about such hilarious moments as Hanks bathing Hooch with a long brush, and a wild chase through the streets when the sharp-eyed mutt spots his suspect. Layered over this is a healthy love story between Hanks and animal vet Mare Winningham, who share a terribly sexy scene together--while fully clothed--doing no more than making breakfast. (Hanks directed this scene, though Roger Spottiswoode directed the rest of the movie.) --Tom Keogh

Description

Academy Award(R)-winner Tom Hanks (Best Actor, 1995, FORREST GUMP) stars as Scott Turner, a compulsively neat detective whose tidy world goes to the dogs when he's forced to team up with the only witness to a crime -- a drooling slob of a junkyard dog named Hooch. Not exactly man's best friend, Hooch turns Turner's life upside down, wrecking Turner's home, career, and budding romance! It's a hilarious, nonstop test of wills between this mismatched duo, leading to the most unlikely friendship you've ever seen! TURNER & HOOCH thrilled audiences nationwide with its offbeat blend of humor and suspense -- this fast-paced box office megahit is loads of fun!

funny movie. tom hanks is an uptight cop, who gets custody of a dirty smelly drooling dog after his owner is murdered...

fun movie.

5 out of 5 stars Best Movie Dog.......2007-01-22

What a great movie. Ever since this movie came out my daughter has wanted a mastif just like Hooch. Thank goodness she can satisfy herself with this dogs antics by watching the movie over and over again. Although this movie looks very eighties/early nineties it has timeless appeal. Definately worth owning.

3 out of 5 stars A man and his dog.......2006-09-17

There are buddy cops. And then there are those like Turner & Hooch. The war begins when a ordinary, clean detective (Tom
Hanks, who's wonderful, and comedic) must solve a crime with a slobbery, chew on people's shoes, mess with records and everything else that's your property dog named Hooch (who, if you're smart like me and see the end credits, is played by Beasley) must solve a murder he was witness to of a old man
(and Turner's friend). The only big roles here are of Hanks,
Beasley, and Mare Winningham, who plays Turner's doctor and girlfriend later on in this movie, but that does'nt stop it from being good, and it is.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorites.......2006-09-13

I don't expect anything more of a movie than to enjoy it and be entertained. I don't seek to psychoanalyze or offer up in-depth critique, it's only a movie. I either enjoy it or I don't. I LOVE this movie, Hanks and Beasley are just wonderful to watch over and over. A little action, a little romance and a lot of laughs..perfect!!

5 out of 5 stars Hooch.......2006-08-05

This movie is hilarious. I loved the dog Hooch. He really made the movie. Well worth watching.

Japanese filmmaker Masanori Hata made this above-average family film about a dog and a cat--friends with a tendency to make mischief--who go on an unanticipated adventure when one is rushed downriver and the other follows. Hata, who took four years to complete the work, relies on purely cinematic storytelling techniques (these animals don't have human voices on the soundtrack), making the film an international favorite. Dudley Moore narrates, but the film works because Hata's filmmaking fundamentals are so good. Kids love this, but adults can easily appreciate and enjoy it, too. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars The Adventures of Milo and Otis.......2007-06-09

My son "lost" the DVD that we borrowed from the library, so this was a
replacement for that lost item. Thankfully you had it, otherwise, instead of 10.00, it would have cost us 20.00!

5 out of 5 stars A hit for kids as well as adults.......2007-05-20

This was the first movie my two-year-old son ever watched. He had a double ear infection and was whining and crying all day. Nothing would calm him down and make him feel better. So I popped in the DVD and he went from crying hysterically to laughing hysterically in, literally, five minutes. I sat down and watched the entire movie with him and loved it. My husband did too. We've watched it many times together since then. A year later and it's still his favorite movie. Sweet, funny, overall enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Great film.......2007-05-12

This is a timeless, very cute film. It is great for children (and adults) of all ages. I watched it when I was a kid and have passed it on to my kids to watch. They loved it!

3 out of 5 stars It's cute.......2007-05-10

It's a cute movie....I remember it being a lot better when I was younger. Nevertheless, it's enjoyable and a good movie.

Some people think "family entertainment" is an oxymoron, but even they might enjoy Because of Winn-Dixie. This straightforward story of a girl and her dog is simple without being simplistic, heartfelt without being sappy, and thoughtful without being ponderous. Opal (Annasophia Robb, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, who manages the near-impossible feat of being cute without being cutesy) can't make any friends in the small town of Naomi until she hooks up with a dog that's running loose in a supermarket. She spontaneously names him after the store and soon the dog is leading her into unexpected places--a pet store, where she meets an awkward musician (Dave Matthews); a library, where she meets a librarian with as many stories as books (Eva Marie Saint); and into a house shrouded with underbrush, where she meets a blind old woman who sees with her heart (Cicely Tyson). This could have been sentimental glop, but director Wayne Wang (Smoke, The Joy Luck Club) and a restrained script draw honest emotions from the actors and an eerie beauty from the Florida landscape; this one of the few family movies that captures the childhood sense that everyday life can be mystical. Also starring Jeff Daniels (The Purple Rose of Cairo, Something Wild) as Opal's minister father. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Based on the best-selling book, BECAUSE OF WINN-Dixie is the heartwarming "tail" of a young girl (Annasophia Robb) whose life is changed by a scruffy, fun-loving pooch she names Winn-Dixie. The special bond between them works magic on her reserved dad (Jeff Daniels) and the eccentric townspeople they meet during one unforgettable summer.

5 out of 5 stars adorable family film!.......2007-06-28

This movie is fun and cute to watch. The characters are well written and you care about them and what happens to them. The animals are adorable to watch and are well trained. It was a funny scene when one of the animals damaged the officer's car. The plot never slows and keeps you satisfied until the end. It is refreshing to see Hollywood produce quality films such as this one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Film For The Whole Family.......2007-05-21

My wife and I watched this movie. It is nice to see a family movie, that tells a great story with great acting that children can understand and enjoy and adults would be hooked along with their kids. Dogs help accomplish this, and the dog here is wonderful.

The story focuses on the character played by AnnaSophia Robb, a daughter of a preacher (Jeff Daniels). If, like me, you are a Christian who is used to negative portrayals of Christians, don't worry. Yes, Daniel's character is human, but no less so than any other character. In this case, the portrayal is neutral, with him not being a hypocrite but more being disconnected, partially due to the pain in his life.

There are lessons for community in this film. The only thing I'd do differently . . . mild spoiler, here . . . was show transformation in the police officer. But that is a minor complaint.

Jeff

5 out of 5 stars Because of Winn-Dixie.......2007-05-14

Very cute movie! I purchased it for my 7 year old grand daughter, but I watched it with her. This is a movie that the entire family can watch and enjoy. I liked it so much that I could watch it again....that's saying something for me. Winn-Dixie brought father and daughter closer together and it helped them both to be able to talk about her mother that was no longer a part of her life.

5 out of 5 stars Winn-Dixie a Winner.......2007-05-12

Beacause of Winn Dixie is a great movie for kids of all ages. Highly Recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Graeat film for children.......2007-03-27

My daughter can't get enough of "Winn Dixie". There is no inapproriate adult humor. The story is sweet and inspiring, a must have for animal lovers and pet owners with children!
