Cole Porter, Shakespeare, and 3-D: Not the usual recipe for an MGM musical, but hey--it works. Although it runs hot and cold, this 1953 take on Porter's delightful Broadway smash lets a chewy cast gorge on some terrific songs and show-biz in-jokes. Think of the plot as His Girl Friday in greasepaint: vain star Howard Keel wants to lure ex-wife Kathryn Grayson back to the boards with a musical version of The Taming of the Shrew. The movie's weakness is too much Shakespeare, not enough backstage backbiting (and why are two of the best numbers, "So in Love" and Ann Miller's zippy "Too Darn Hot," confined to a prologue?). Then there's the tendency to throw things at the camera--3-D, what hath you wrought? The candy-store color design is great fun, and Tommy Rall and future dance titan Bob Fosse are turned loose for some sensational leaps. Now that's "Wunderbar." --Robert Horton

Fred and Lilly are a divorced pair of actors who are brought together by Cole Porter who has written a musical version of The Taming of the Shrew. Of course, the couple seem to act a great deal like the characters they play. A fight on the opening night threatens the production, as well as two thugs who have the mistaken idea that Fred owes their boss money and insist on staying next to him all night.

The Three Leads Are Wonderful!.......2007-04-29

I can't believe I had never seen either the stage or movie version of this famous Broadway musical until now. This 1953 movie is very enjoyable because of the excellent singing, dancing, charisma and acting of the three leads - Howard Keel, Ann Miller and Kathryn Grayson. The supporting cast is fine too with great dancing and comedy bits. The story is far from politically correct (take a look at the "spanking" DVD cover) which makes it seem more than a bit dated and of course the core of the story is taken from Shakespeare. And I am not surprised to read it was originally released as a 3D film since there are lots of time when the actors throw things rather unnecessarily to the audience. Still a must see for all musical lovers.

It's Too Darn Hot!.......2006-08-25

I look at this film and comment to myself, could anyone else but the legendary Cole Porter write such a masterpiece. Mr. Porter was a master with the piano and his lyrics were suave and sophisticated (very much like his personality)His lyris as some would say were ahead of his time, he would suggestively wirte where you knew what he was saying, but not to the full extent of the singer or actor actually coming out and saying it. "Kiss Me Kate" was originally a Broadway show that opened in 1949, only 3 years later did they begin shooting this motion picture that were vehicles for Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel ('Seven Brides for Seven Brothers') The film (in my viewpoint) is one of the grandest musicals of the golden age and I regret that Hollywood does nothing today that live up to these high standards which moguls like L.B. Mayer and David O. Selznick set for us. The film is a true masterpiece and I find it to be almost as good as Porter's flamboyant musical "Anything Goes". You might also want to look in to buying the soundtrack of this picutre along with the 1999 Broadway Revival Cast. Enjoy Porter at his best and you'll be "So In Love" with this picture!

Great Fun, good music, but don't buy the DVD for the extras, there aren't any.......2006-06-29

This is one of my favourite musicals (along with Seven Brides for SEven brothers). A great good natured movie which followed a hugely successful Broadway show of the same name.

Cole Porter's amusing songs set on the background of a stage musical based around Shakespeare's taming of the shrew. In the background are the ex husband and wife (Fred and Lilli - played by Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel) who are reliving their own version of Katherine and Petruchio as they figure out their own failed marriage

This is not a difficult film to watch emotionally, as you can imagine Cole Porter is not Oprah Wingrey. However it is enormoulsy good natured, I love Porter's clever lyrics and Howard Keel and Grayson are extremely good in their roles, A neat supporting cast.

There are a few stretches in some of the songs - I mean how on earth could they really imagine that 'Wunderbar' would be a great song for a shakespearian play set in Italy? Still it fits in and it is fun to watch just how they manage it - and as for teh two gangsters singing, 'Brush up your Shakespeare' rhyming Heinous with Coriolanus!

There are really no extras on this at all - if you hoped for an interview or deleted scenes then forget it, it is the movie, and a few picture scenes with a bit of information on them, nothing that you would want to buy this DVD especially for.

One of the best musicals, lots of fun and a good watch!

This 1984 Carl Reiner comedy is one of the best film showcases of Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin's sundry talents. Tomlin plays a sickly spinster who is given the chance to transfer her soul to the body of another woman, and thus go on living. But the magic man who is supposed to make this happen goofs up and locks her spirit inside a bachelor lawyer (Martin)--or, more accurately, within the right half of the poor fellow's body. Suddenly, the swinging man-about-town is literally at odds with himself, unable to make a self-determining decision without a huge internal struggle. Martin's physical comedy, always remarkable, is absolutely inspired this time around, as he convincingly portrays a man split down the middle between opposing sensibilities. This is also one of the best films by Reiner, a filmmaker whose novel ideas are sometimes more striking than their execution. --Tom Keogh

"All of Me," a 1984 romantic comedy/fantasy starring Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin, directed by Carl Reiner, catches all three stars at the top of their form. Tomlin plays Edwina Cutwater, spoiled rich brat of fragile health. Steve Martin is Roger Cobb, hapless lawyer of working class origins who'd really rather be a jazzman. Selma Diamond ("Night Court") is just right as Cobb's law secretary in a part that feels like it was written for her. Richard Libertini is over the top as Prahka, eastern swami, in a part that also feels like it must have been written for him. And then there's Victoria Tennant as Terri Hoskins, beautiful daughter of Cutwater's stable man.

After a lifetime of threatening to die any minute, Cutwater is actually dying. She makes arrangements with Prahka so as to transfer her soul into Terri Hoskins's tidy body. Then the heiress requires Cobb, as he protests all the way, to write the unusual will leaving everything to Hoskins. The heiress dies, Prahka trips, and her soul goes into Cobb's body, where it controls his right side.

Many people speak of Martin's gift for physical comedy, and praise his three inspired scenes early in the picture. First on the street, struggling to walk to his office building, then, somewhat later, his efforts to relieve himself, and to make love to Hoskins, all with Cutwater supposedly controlling half his body. Hilarious these three scenes are, as is his split personality courtroom scene. But they can't compete with the touching last scene, as Martin and Tomlin, their characters freed at last, do a wild and crazy jitterbug to "All of Me." They say you should dance as if nobody's looking; that's what these popular comic actors here achieve.

Classic Steve Martin Meets Lily Tomlin.......2007-05-16

In my opinion, this is one of Steve Martin's best movies. It's a comedy with heart (my favorite kind) and the premise, together with the casting, works remarkably well. Lily Tomlin initially plays a super-rich, bed-ridden grouch. Her plan is to enter the body of a woman whom she has paid to allow her to possess her body on her death. Instead, through an accident, she ends up in Steve Martin's body, and they battle for control. Thus the title -- why not take "all of me"? I highly recommend this movie.

The movie, in and of itself, is a good one (4 stars); but the quality of the DVD is amazingly bad. If I had known that it was even possible for a DVD to come out so badly, I wouldn't have bought it. To boot, it's not in widescreen.

Big fan of the major actors in this film: Steve Martin, Lily Tomlin, Victoria Tennant. Think the premise is good and silly but really love watching Steve Martin play both his and Lily Tomlin's parts in one body.

Least of the Martin/Reiner comedies.......2006-09-09

Steve Martin and director Carl Reiner made some wonderful comedies together, but this tale of soul transference from a wealthy woman (Lily Tomlin) to a bachelor lawyer (Martin) is probably the least of them. Martin and Tomlin don't develop much chemistry until the final scene when they dance together while the final credits roll. Martin's physical comedy here is astonishing, but unfortunately, nothing else in the film seems to work. Tomlin isn't very good, perhaps because her roll requires here to remain rather stiff and stationary for the most part, confined within the frames of mirrors. For a true dose of Martin/Reiner magic, I recommend "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" or "The Man with Two Brains."

Not Another Teen Coming Out Movie.......2007-05-09

This movie really helped me to begin to feel more comfortable as a young woman coming into my own. This movie really hits it home that sometimes the best thing to do in life is to leave those from your past and follow the path that is right for you. The movie also bravely illustrates that no matter how much we may try, we cannot make another person follow the right path, even if it might mean the difference between life and death in that person's life.

I brought this movie on a wim. It turn out this movie is great. it deals with teenager love no less about lesbian love. Takes place in new york. This is not a movie for everyone because it kind of slow pace. but if you have some time to actually witness a good movie about what it's like to be a teenager then by all means.

This movie was okay...it's really slow paced, and is a low-budget film. I wouldn't buy it, I would rent it though or record it from showtime or something. There was something I didn't care for and i'm not sure what it is.....just so slow.....

An Overlooked But Important Film.......2005-06-24

I am really, really excited that this film has finally come to DVD- even though it contains no extra features, and this is a movie that could produce a wonderful commentary and/or DVD documentary. I first saw this film on Cinemax when I was about 14 years old and I haven't forgotten it even now that I'm in my early 20's. Alison Folland perfectly underplays Claude- a quiet, insecure girl whose relationship with her best friend Ellen (played by an inspired Tara Subkoff) becomes strained when Ellen starts spending all her time with her new boozing & druggie boyfriend- while at the same time Claude begins to have romantic feelings towards Ellen.

Folland's character soon makes friends with two very special people who encourage her to pursue her love of rock music- Luke, who just moves into the apartment building, and Lucy (Leisha Hailey, who was well-known as a member of the band The Murmurs when this film was released & also supplies some music to the film) who also gives Claude her first same-sex romantic encounter- which is done with a light, sweet & realistic touch. The film does become darker as it plays on, with Ellen's spiral into addiction and ending with a sudden and shocking hate crime takes the life of a friend, and forces Claude to grow up very quickly.

This is a wonderful film that everyone can take something meaningful from- you don't have to be a teenage girl or homosexual/bi-sexual to appreciate the characters, story, and ultimately the message. It also has a fantastic soundtrack (my copy still gets spun after a good seven years) that includes music from Sleater-Kinney, Patti Smith, Ani DiFranco, Tuscadero and many more that skillfully encapsulates both the mid-to-late 90's time period and feel of the movie.

I purchased Mr. Bean for my husband for Christmas. My 10 year old granddaughter saw the tape and fell in love with Mr.Bean. This summer when discussing Christmas, she said she was going to ask Santa to bring her a Mr. Bean just like Grandpas. Doesn't matter what age you are, Mr. Bean is enjoyed by all.

I , my son, and my wife have viewed the 4 volumes currently on the market.
We LOVE them all. The simple joys that Bean brings to his live action character translate very well into this nicely done, and artfully drawn, cartoon series. Perfectly enjoyable.

This video was not fun at all for me or baby. There was no music, and it seems like she just taped it in her basement. I agree that it was not interactive with the baby at all.

BORING!!!!.......2007-03-07

I was really disappointed with this video. The only positive is that it does give a good arm workout (my arms were sore the next day), which is the only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. Oh, and the video is broken into two 15-minute workouts that can be done separately. Specific negatives:
--It looks like a home video shot at the local gym. The setting is literally an aerobic room at a gym. There is no music at all. And the instructor is really blah. All this adds up to very boring!
--Most of the exercises are not interactive with baby. Rather, baby sits on your belly during crunches or on your lap while you use free weights to do arm exercises.
--The ab exercises are really repetitive.
I have other mom & baby dvds and I know I am not likely to use this one again. The other videos I have involve a lot more involvement of baby in the exercises (e.g., lifting him for arm exercises, doing "airplane" with him on my legs for abs) which my son loves - it makes me look forward to working out with him and that motivates me. He was really bored and restless during this dvd. The other videos I've used also have gorgeous outdoor settings and music - just overall more interesting to look at. I definitely do not recommend this one.

Workout for Mommy and Ben.......2006-03-25

I have been doing the abdominal workout with my son, Benjamin and we really enjoy it a lot. Ben thinks it's funny that mommy is making funny faces while doing those crunches.

I love how Kira and her daughter work out in a simple, home like setting. The workout looks simple but believe me with a baby sitting on your belly/legs it can be really challenging. My son is 4 months old now and the length of the abdominal workout is just right for him he would probably get fussy if it was any longer (and probably mommy too:))

We haven't really tried the upper body excercises with the weights but they also look like a good workout.

As a mommy of a 6 month old, I don't always have time to make it to the gym, but by doing this at home and involving him, it not only got me back in shape, but allowed some one-on-one quality time with my son. I highly recommend all of Kira's videos! As I had stated in another review, these make wonderful shower gifts too!!!!

Good ab workout for non-mom's too!.......2005-12-10

I love Kira's workouts! Even though I have no children, I got this one for the 15-minute ab workout. I use a dumbell weight instead of a baby for a harder workout. These are great exercises! And to be honest, watching Kira's baby participating during the workout is a riot! I do the arm workout with both arms instead of the one-arm at a time as shown. It's great when I am short on time because it hits all my main trouble spots!

If you don't know much about THE KING you'll fall in love and if you are a fan then...your heart will beat faster, you will have butterflies flying around in your stomach and you'll remember how it felt the first time you saw and heard THE GREAT Elvis Presley!!! Fourteen years into his carrier and Elvis is looking Sizzling!!!
What an outstanding DVD and music selection, it is indeed THE BEST OF ELVIS!!! All his brilliant songs that touched our hearts are right here. This is a MUST HAVE for all the Elvis fans out there.
I LOOOOOOOOOVE this DVD, It has now became my favorite, much better than "Elvis-One night with you".
It's an import and the menu is in Portuguese but so easy to navigate a two year old can do it, and with 29 Best Songs it is SOOOOOO WORTH IT!!!

My children and I love the music on the Noodlebug videos! There are great new versions of old favorites and many songs written for these videos by Chuck Brown. The "Haircut" song is a favorite, as well as "Bathtime is done". This video presents a segment on feelings as well, with expressive faces and the song, "If You're Happy". The version of "Where is Thumbkin" is funny because only the first verse is sung, thereby avoiding the awkwardness of singing about "Tall Man". The video does teach the children the names of each finger so they can sing later. The animations and children on these videos are adorable, and we recommend this video for the songs at the very least.
