Federico Fellini's 1963 semi-autobiographical story about a worshipped filmmaker who has lost his inspiration is still a mesmerizing mystery tour that has been quoted (Woody Allen's Stardust Memories, Paul Mazursky's Alex in Wonderland) but never duplicated. Marcello Mastroianni plays Guido, a director trying to relax a bit in the wake of his latest hit. Besieged by people eager to work with him, however, he also struggles to find his next idea for a film. The combined pressures draw him within himself, where his recollections of significant events in his life and the many lovers he has left behind begin to haunt him. The marriage of Fellini's hyperreal imagery, dreamy sidebars, and the gravity of Guido's increasing guilt and self-awareness make this as much a deeply moving, soulful film as it is an electrifying spectacle. Mastroianni is wonderful in the lead, his woozy sensitivity to Guido's freefall both touching and charming--all the more so as the character becomes increasingly divorced from the celebrity hype that ultimately outpaces him. --Tom Keogh
Description
Federico Fellini's towering masterpiece follows burned-out celebrity director Marcello Mastroianni through a series of bizarre encounters and wild daydreams, the first of which finds him ascending into the clouds during a traffic jam. Seeking solace and rejuvenation at a remote health spa, he finds himself plagued by journalists, his producer, his mistress, and most inconvenient of all, his wife ("A Man and a Woman's" Anouk Aimee). Caught between past, present, and fantasy, he longs to make a pure and honest film while his producer goads him into shooting a big budget science fiction spectacle. Widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, this visually dazzling feast also stars Claudia Cardinale (The Pink Panther), Barbara Steele (Black Sunday), and Rossella Falk (Modesty Blaise). I absolutely loved it. As soon as I recieved I watched the entire first season. The only problem that I have is that in some parts it freezes like from a scratch but it isn't too bad. Love shopping at amazon

5 out of 5 stars Perfect purchase.......2007-06-27

I bought the box set as a gift for my boyfriend, and he was really pleased with it. The box is strong enough to have the DVDs, the booklet is very useful, and also when you play a DVD in you computer a software from WB can be installed automatically so you can watch the episodes using that program. Regarding the quality of the DVDs, I have no complaints, the image is good, the sound too, plus you have different language subtitles to practice with. And one more thing, I was afraid that the box would be delived to me practically in pieces because of the shipment period (two weeks and a bit more)and because of some review I read, but it was in perfect conditions. You should definitely buy this Product!

5 out of 5 stars This is automatic brownie points with your lady!!.......2007-06-27

I can't say I was a fan of the show in the beginning of its run. I tend to watch more cartoons than sitcoms. When I first met my girlfriend, she got me into watching this show. At first I only watched it because that meant I got to sit and hold her for 30 minutes; but the show kinda grew on me.

I like friends, and even though they didn't really have any other RACES on the show as regulars, you could find a piece of yourself in at least one of the six characters.

I am definately Chandler.

5 out of 5 stars Oh My God! .......2007-06-25

Excellent option if you want to have all ten seasons at the same time, and at a very cheap price. It was delivered in ten days here to Mexico. And yes, it does have spanish subtitles.

Description

One of the greatest films about film ever made, Federico Fellini's 8 1/2 (Otto e Mezzo) turns one man's artistic crisis into a grand epic of the cinema. Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni) is a director whose film-and life-is collapsing around him. An early working title for the film was La Bella Confusione (The Beautiful Confusion), and Fellini's masterpiece is exactly that: a shimmering dream, a circus, and a magic act. The Criterion Collection is proud to present the 1963 Academy Award® winner for Best Foreign-Language Film-one of the most written about, talked about, and imitated movies of all time-in a beautifully restored new digital transfer. Disc two features Fellini's rarely seen first film for television, Fellini: A Director's Notebook (1969). Produced by Peter Goldfarb, this imagined documentary of Fellini is a kaleidoscope of unfinished projects, all of which provide a fascinating and candid window into the director's unique and creative process.

4 out of 5 stars Not to all tastes, and sadly not quite to mine.......2007-06-15

Unfortunately, for the most part 8½ left me cold, one of those films where you get what is being done but it's just not on your wavelength. It's pointless to complain about it being hit-and-miss or confused, since erratic confusion is the nature of the beast as Fellini becomes possibly the first man to film his own nervous breakdown (or at very least his crisis of creativity). In many ways the turning point in Fellini's career where fantasy and grotesquery would become an increasing part of increasingly disjointed phantasmagorias with a design style as cluttered as a tart's dressing table, there are moments that strike home and the latter scenes with his wife and with Claudia work because there's a sense of self-awareness of Fellini's limitations not just as an artist but as a human being. But overall I was just left with the feeling that I'd got on the wrong train by mistake.

(Incidentally, to strike a timely note, it's amusing to note that the producer's brainless bimbo girlfriend is the spitting image of Paris Hilton!)

It's a shame Criterion's otherwise excellent 2-disc DVD couldn't locate the deleted sequences, although they are represented in the excellent stills galeries. Alongside the 50-minute 'Director's Notebook' documentary TV special by Fellini, the 45-minute German Nino Rota documentary is interesting and has a wonderful moment where the composer accepts a proffered cigarette only to turn down a light because he doesn't smoke!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Fellini in all his glory. .......2007-05-13

What else can I say? It's Fellini at his best. It's the antithesis of a Hollywood movie, which is to say that it't thought provoking and demanding of the viewer.

5 out of 5 stars Very personal, very interesting.......2007-02-22

I wrote originally wrote this as a comment on one of the negative reviews, but thought it might be beneficial to expand it and post as a review in its own right:

I can understand why this movie might appear pretentious.... I'm not saying it's especially esoteric, but because the method of expression contrasts with traditional film-making it can appear pretentious until you get the feel for it. This isn't something that requires special technical knowledge, it just has to be developed intuitively---once you get it, it's like "ah-hah!" and it suddenly seems very down-to-earth and human.

This film doesn't follow traditional narrative structure, it is more a series of vignettes or impressions that relate to Fellini's improvisational and personal style. I can still understand why someone might not relate to Fellini himself, but that doesn't render his art worthless. It is a highly personal, accurate, and outstanding expression of his self, and that is why it is great--- not because of the hype that has been forever associated with Fellini's films and larger-than-life persona.

This film represents a good place to start if one wished to begin understanding other works of art that make use of subjective or surrealist methods in their presentation. I think some David Lynch films use a very similar technique, though applied to specific characters which are not strictly auto-biographical.

8 1/2, does a very good job of blending subjectivity and "objectivity" throughout. It is an interesting portrait of a person's psyche---his psyche shapes his reality, and vice versa. In this light, every person's reality is truly their own, though I can't know if Fellini really intended to make any larger implications such as these. Fellini knows himself best, his own bank of experiences and perceptions form the basis of the content. All great art is highly personal like this, whether it admits to it or not.

It is important to stress that this is not a film that makes use of dynamic narrative tensions. It has basically one situation: the main character. It explores that one situation as fully as possible--- all of the things that make him who he is and in turn shape the way he perceives and approaches his circumstance. The film is highly unique in the skill with which it does so, and the loose, almost improvisational nature of this film-making is suited to presenting its subject.

Relying on circumstance to intervene in the creative process allows aspects to manifest that could not have if he were trying to write a film of this nature. Subconscious and unintentional aspects could reveal themselves, giving the film a psychological weight that contributes to the feeling of personal depth. These aspects may not be picked up consciously by the viewer except on repeated viewings...this is what I mean when I say you have to develop an intuitive feel for the way these kinds of films work.

Until you develop that feel and understanding, more emotional than intellectual, these and other films (like those of the aforementioned David Lynch) will just appear pretentious. I do not deny that there are a lot of folks who act like they understand these kinds of movies more than they do, contributing to the pretentious vibe.

There can still be differences of opinion in terms of interpretation, but the essence of the film is not intellectual---varying interpretations can simultaneously be accurate given the layers of ambiguity and complexity that great minds (and subsequently great works) possess. People and works with one simplistic message are not nearly as compelling.

1 out of 5 stars The Emperor has no clothes.......2007-02-06

It's really quite amusing reading all of the fawning encomia to this pretentious piece of garbage. Because this film's reputation is based on a top-down critical diktat rather than on inherent quality, most of these reviews either cite some sort of authority (Roger Ebert, the Academy Awards, some frou frou list of the greatest "films" of "cinema") to justify their adulation, or they seem to be quoting accolades and analysis from some film-history textbook. The sheep can't bleat their loyalty to received judgement fast enough. After two viewings, I have found nothing of value in 8 1/2. This movie consists of glamourous Italians going here and there talking about_nothing_, with occasional surrealistic hallucinations interspersed. This entire movie is a cheap trick, and that will be acknowledged in a more honest era. In the meantime, it is our duty, like the little child, to proclaim very loudly that the Emperor is naked! I give this movie negative 8 1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars The Reviewer Below Doesn't Get The "Art" ; ).......2007-01-25

There was a challenge in the review below to offer an essay for why 8 1/2 truly is a great film. I offer Roger Ebert's essay in his The Great Movies archive. It can be found on his website. There are some great reasons brought up on why 8 1/2 works so well and I really enjoy his observations about the movie.

Criterion also makes a great dvd package.

Great film, great picture quality, great extras, and a great book of essays to go with it all.

This one is worth picking up, hands down.

5 out of 5 stars Great basic review!!!!.......2007-04-01

This 2 DVD set is a great review for basic calculus concepts. As others have pointed out, this set really is appropriate for Calculus I and does not pertain to Calculus II. It would be great if Jason produced a Calculus II DVD (or call it "advanced") for those of us who need more than what is provided in this basic set.

Although there is a plethora of review books out there, having a workbook or review book specific to the DVD set would also be a wonderful learning aid!

These DVD's (and the others produced by Jason) are concise, easy to understand and will help to clarify oft-used mathematical concepts. I would highly recommend these to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Great Supplement.......2007-03-10

Great product. That is not to say that this is all that you will need but acts as a wonderful supplement to any calculus course. It helped me greatly just to see the same lessons from a different instructor. I would recomend to anyone who really needs to get firm grip on Cal one.

5 out of 5 stars excellent review source.......2007-01-22

I purchased this for my daughter who is now in college and uses it as a great review and or learning resource. She was very pleased as to how simple and well explained the courses are and it even got her into a calculus class she wanted at her University by passing a test to be accepted into the class. thank you!

3 out of 5 stars should be helpful to most.......2006-12-13

let me just say this guy is a fantastic teacher. while watching his dvds (and ive watched two, the calculus series and the trig series)--i thought quite a few times, wouldnt it be nice if my college professors knew how to teach like this? ofcourse they can't even speak english.

anyways, this calc tutor dvd is superb if you are either in calc 1, or extremely extremely lost in calc 2. but don't assume just becuase its called 'the calculus 1 & 2 tutor' that it adequately covers calc II. it covers almost nothing. however, i sure wish i had this when i was in calc I. that said--if you are in dire need of help this may be your break. give it a try :)

just wanted to add the advantage of this dvd over having a live tutor--true you can't ask questions.. but you can rewind & rewatch to your hearts content, and you can pause it & try working out the problems, etc. try doing that with a human! or someone who only has an hour to work with you, and may get fustrated when they have to explain something 4 times. dvd's don't get annoyed! and did i mention how much more economical this option is? the hours of tutoring you get from this dvd for its price.. far ourweigh the mileage you'd get paying someone by the hour, for every hour..

3 out of 5 stars A little light.......2006-08-14

This dvd set was little better than most I have used (the majority are not worth the time) but is still aimed very much at beginners. Covers the major topics, good for review and supplementary viewing.

1 out of 5 stars Try nine seasons of garbage............2007-06-16

You had two lead performers. One whose acting is so wooden that he may has well be a tree, and the other who is really trying to bring some credibility to a part that is rather thankless to play. Nine seasons of junk. That's all you get out of this bad TV show set.

    4 out of 5 stars A mixed blessing..........2007-06-09

It's true, this set is ridiculously expensive. But there is one advantage of buying this over the thin sets: the thinpaks are missing most of the special features that these original versions have. It's a financial horror to buy this, but at least you get more special features in exchange for the ridiculously high price.

If you're a casual X-Files fan, get the thinpaks. If you're really into the show, though, be prepared to pay your house's insurance for this set, at least until the powers that be decide to cut the price on this set.

    Like that will ever happen.

2 out of 5 stars Annoying flashes during scene changes on DVD season 1 & 2 +.......2007-04-05

I bought seasons 1 - 9 on DVD. Thus far season 1 and 2 have annoying flashes between scenes. Season 1 has it on even DVD disks and Season 2 has it on odd DVD disks. Edits of scenes appear to randomly splice 2 even or 2 odd fields into 1 frame. The result is overlapping fields in frames between scenes and loss of synchronization. Horizontal tearing is very evident. This causes flashes of light between scenes that is especially annoying when going from a light scene to a dark scene or vice versa. It does not appear to be a bad press of the DVD.

When they accidentally cut the scene correctly, 50 % of the time, there is no annoying flash. The problem doesn't last very long, but ruins the moment for sure in some scenes.

Some scenes also suffer from jitter problems. I think the DVD player is not at fault on this. The problem seems to be on the DVD. Perhaps it has to do with the bitrate of the mpeg file.

Anyway, you may want to rent before you buy to check this out. I hope the problem is gone by season 3.

I continue to be and have been from the beginning, a huge X-Files fan, nut, fanatic. I have so much X-Files parafanilia that I use a special room for storage. I have collected every book written about the show. I have every Tee shirt ever make with an X-Files display on it. I have the original busts created of Mulder & Scully. I have every episode recorded on video tape. (recorded by me with care). I would buy this DVD collection in a heartbeat if the pricing was more reasonable. The current cost of $550.00 is way overpriced. It has been stated by others as to where to get this at reasonable cost (Frys, WalMart, BestBuy,Circuit City) I wish Amazon would check out their competition & match prices. This is a great compilation for true fans to have. I'm waiting for the price to drop. Oh great Amazon God of the internet, the colonization is about to begin, and we need this DVD collection ( at $200.00....still $23.00 per season). Make it affordable for your loyal customers so that we can Fight The Future together...We would be much stronger to fight off the Super Soldiers if we used your Amazon magic and powers to receive these critically important DVD's. Only we have the knowledge to break the conspiricy, and prevent the spread of "Purity", the black oil. We all will be waiting for your response to this plea. Help us save the world from the Alien colonization. Lower the price so we, together, can find the "Truth". It is still out there.....

    5 out of 5 stars THEY'RE THE ORIGINAL COLLECTOR'S EDITIONS!.......2007-01-02

Everyone on here needs to understand that you are rating the movie/show itself and its quality, not the packaging or price on Amazon!! Sure you can get the slim-packs at some chain store for a dime a dozen but these are the ORIGINAL COLLECTOR'S EDITIONS released as the seasons were still being aired on tv. From a die-hard devoted "X-Phile", I would never buy the slim-packs over the original. The recording quality is just not the same (I have a 60 inch $10,000 plasma, I would know!) I've seen both versions displayed on the big screen and take it from me, it's somehow just not the same. And the Asian versions.... forget it!! If you're at all serious about this show, a hacked off, ripped off bangkok bootleg version is not even a serious option to consider!
Other than that, I will add that you can purchase the original collector's versions cheaper still than on Amazon. $550 for the series (equating to about $60 a season) is a little steep. I payed exactly half that when Best Buy had a "buy 3, save $30 special." However at this point, the original boxed versions are next to impossible to still find in stores and your only choice may just be Ebay where they ARE almost $60 (some more) per season!
So, this may not be that great of a rip-off after all. Either way, please please keep in mind that you are rating the show itself and not the box or the price! If you in fact do not like the show, there's something wrong upstairs and your vote does NOT belong here! Au revoir and keep watching the skies!

A sitcom behemoth of the last 10 years, Friends shot out of the gate in 1994 with snappy writing and an attractive cast. The exploits of sensitive paleontologist Ross Geller (David Schwimmer), his obsessive-compulsive sister Monica Geller (Courteney Cox); Monica's roommate Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), a spoiled rich girl trying to live on her own; earthy aromatherapist/masseuse Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow); and Monica's neighbors across the hall-- sarcastic Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) and his dim-bulb roommate Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) became a nationwide obsession, a pop-culture icon (remember "The Rachel" haircut?) and a top Nielsen hit for its entire run.

See the 10 or more seasons club .
The first two seasons were mostly centered on the on-off saga of Ross and Rachel, and while their relationship remained a strong presence through romantic rivals and even a baby,

View clips and vote for your favorite Friends moment.
the other characters eventually moved from sideshow players into a shared comedic lead. But Friends was not without its heart. Most of the cast had dysfunctional relationships with their parents and went through loss, divorce, marriage, parenthood, and love triangles. The emotional pregnancies of Rachel (by Ross) and Phoebe (surrogate to her half-brother's triplets) won the actresses Emmy Awards, and Joey's tender feelings for Rachel in Season 8 won LeBlanc, the most improved actor in the series, a nomination.

Most sitcoms run out of ideas by the fifth season, but Friends gave itself a refreshing jolt the minute Monica and Chandler wound up in bed together. Their budding romance was not only the one of the funniest arcs of the series, but one of the most sentimental, as they planned a wedding, struggled to have a child and eventually turned to adoption. By seasons seven and on, the characters had each "grown up" from young singletons to thirtysomethings finding permanence in their careers and love lives but never losing the laughs.

Just friends? See our guide to who kissed whom on Friends.
Friends featured a parade of celebrity guests, but unlike Will & Grace, it actually utilized most of the stars as more than cameos: The sextet's parents were all brilliantly cast, particularly Kathleen Turner as Chandler's drag-queen father and Teri Garr as Phoebe's dizzy mom. Everyone from George Clooney to Sean Penn to Julia Roberts to Bruce Willis has appeared on the sitcom, and Tom Selleck certainly enjoyed a career resuscitation after his recurring role as Monica's older man.

But no star power ever penetrated the bond between the six stars, and their unmatchable chemistry worked for 10 seasons. Even if the show is on reruns daily, this boxed set of Friends remains watchable over and over again--even if that theme song grates on your nerves.

Standout episodes include The One With All The Poker (Season 1), The One With The Birth (1), The One With the Prom Video (2), The One With the Flashback (3), The One Where Monica and Richard are Just Friends (3), The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break (3), The One With the Embryos (4), The One With All the Wedding Dresses (4), The One With the Thanksgiving Flashbacks (5), The One Where Everybody Finds Out (5), The One Where Ross Got High (6), The One With the Videotape (8), The One With the Rumor (8), The One With the Male Nanny (9), The One With Rachel's Other Sister (9), The One With Ross' Tan (10), and The One Where the Stripper Cries (10). --Ellen A. This item rocked! Not only was it cheap, it came in a fantastic and unique case compared to other sets!! So colorful!! I still haven't had the time to watch them all... I'm only on season 3! That's why I got the set though because eventually I will have the time, and I can always watch my favorite episodes over and over again!. I even have the script from "The one with Joey's Bag" and I can't wait to watch the episode with the script in hand!

Everything about this set was amazing until I got to the Bonus Features...had audio, but no video. I had not realized that this was an Asian version that would not play on U.S. devices. The seller was very agreeable to refunding the returned product...thank you! I would deffinitely buy from this seller again.

What a classic show. The box is beautiful as well, real wood with plexiglass door on front. A little tough to get the seasons out of the box though, not a lot of height from top of season box to top of holder box, but hey, small price to pay for all 10 seasons in one place.

This is the most satisfying item I ever bought online. Came in a package of more than what I expected. It is just fabulous. What can I say, it is the BEST. I recommend Friends fans to get one and others to get it and add to your DVD collection. The packaging and quality of DVDs are extremely good. This is a "must have" for your collection.

    Product Description

Directed by Peter Greenaway (The Pillow Book; the Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover), the dark side of ecstasy unfolds against the backdrop of Japan's frenzied pachinko parlors and the Swiss countryside. After the death of his wife, a wealthy businessman questions his devotion to his passive spouse and denial of sensual experimentation for their many years of marriage. When his son returns to the family's Swiss chateau from Japan where he manages his father's pachinko parlors, he brings his father to see Federico Fellini's masterpiece, 8 1/2. The sight of so many magnificent women inspires them to turn their Swiss mansion into a chateau of sexual pleasure.
But soon their wild sexual fantasies begin to unravel, and the two men discover that when fantasy becomes reality, the balance of power can shift. When it does, those seemingly in control don't always come out on top.

    3 out of 5 stars Heaven .......2006-10-19

Peter Greenaway's films are always interesting. He's got his own provocative style. Whether it was retelling Shakespeare's "The Tempest" with an all-nude cast as in "Prospero's Books" or the nudity in "The Pillow Book" where a woman enjoys having people write on her body, you can rest assured that someone will probably disrobe before the end of the picture. In "8 & 1/2 Women," English actor John Standing whose career has ranged from "The Elephant Man" in 1980 to "V for Vendetta" in 2006 plays the head of a large corporation. As Philip Emmenthal he acquires panchinko parlors in Japan with strong-arm business tactics. Unfortunately, his wife passes away early in the film. This leaves Emmenthal grieving -- not for his wife necessarily but for someone to hold him. His son Storey flies home from Kyoto, Japan to the Emmenthal estate in Geneva, Switzerland. To comfort his grieving father, Storey takes off all his clothes and sleeps with his father. The two then go to see Fellini's film "8 & 1/2" and discuss whether it's normal for a son to sleep with his father. Even for the more liberal viewers, this is pretty strange. Philip & Storey then decide that what they need is a lot of women -- eight and a half, to be precise -- to distract the father. Vivian Wu who was in "The Pillow Book" as well as "The Last Emperor" & "The Joy Luck Club" plays a crazed panchinko addict who agrees to pay off her debts by sleeping with the pair. She flies to Geneva. Simato played by Shizuka Inoh in the only film I could find listed for her plays the Japanese business mind that has some control issues. She flies to Geneva. Toni Collette who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for "The Sixth Sense" in 1999 plays a nun who shaves her head (and other parts) and tries to gain salvation for Philip while wearing no clothes. In rides Beryl on a horse. Beryl is played by Emmy-winner Amanda Plummer who won her award for "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" in 2005. Storey honks the horn, which makes the horse rear up & results in a severe back injury to Beryl. After returning the stolen horse, they adopt her and put her in a sheer plastic brace that allows Philip to massage the private parts on her chest while she recovers. Plummer stays on scene until she rides off like Lady Godiva through the fields. Polly Walker who did a great job in "Eye of the Killer" and was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2005 for the TV mini-series "Rome" plays Palmira, the seductive temptress with a high pain threshold. As odd as it sounds, the major theme I found was about the existence of God. At the end of the film, Philip is getting a nude massage that he equates to heaven and then passes peacefully. Palmira then refers to him as "the Almighty." Thus, for me, the film was about people who worship at the altar of their own bodies rather than seeking eternal truths such as Truth, Beauty & Goodness. That said, the film is beautifully shot. As the son Storey, Matthew Delamere who was in "Under the Skin" with Samantha Morton is a rather flat actor, both in body and emotional capability. If the film is not a success, I think it was because there wasn't more range in this lead actor. However, one must certainly admit that he had no hesitancy in walking around sans wardrobe. This is an interesting film, not entirely likeable, not completely moving, but worth an evening's viewing when the children are NOT around! Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Mixed Effort From A Great Filmmaker.......2005-04-13

Peter Greenaway's films are always a challenge, even for his most devoted admirers. I am a member of that group. I traveled 90 minutes each way to see his new film '8 1/2 Women'. His films are incredibly (really, an understatement) complex, both visually and narratively. Like most filmmakers, he has his ups ('The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover', 'The Pillow Book', 'Drowning By Numbers' and 'The Draughtsman's Contract') and his downs ('A Zed and Two Naughts', 'Belly of An Architect'). Unfortunately, '8 1/2 Women' is not one of his best.

I read a review of the film that stated it was his most accessible in years. Yes, I can see that. This means that Greenaway has stripped away six or seven layers of narrative that usually happen concurrently in his best films. He has dumbed down the visual style while retaining a story that is not very focused.

We seem to be experiencing a bit of a trend. Some of the most intelligent filmmakers are dumbing down their work to reach a new audience while dissatisfying their core audience. Woody Allen's latest film is a farce with none of the depth he is known for. The result? 'Small Time Crooks' will probably be his most successful film in years. Robert Towne created an overly simplistic blueprint for the stunts in 'Mission Impossible 2'. The result? The screenplay works, but the audience is told the core of the mission six times. Now Greenaway directs a film with one layer of narrative, robbing his own film of the richness and depth he has done before. What's next? Martin Scorcese directing Leonardo DiCaprio? Oh, that's actually happening.

If you have never seen a Peter Greenaway film, and most of you probably haven't, a little background is probably in order. Greenaway is a painter and spent some time doing set design for operas. He brings both of these sensibilities to his films. When the film is good, it is a glorious mixture of all of these elements creating truly beautiful films. His longtime cinematographer, Sacha Vierny, is a great asset to the visual style. He also likes to experiment with words and narrative. For instance, the beginning of 'The Pillow Book' combined a layer of film that had Japanese Calligraphy, the writing of the Pillow Book, and two separate scenes going on on top of that. Your eye is always watching something. Your mind is always working. In 'Drowning By Numbers', the numbers 1 through 100 appear in the actual film in some form or another. In 'The Cook, The Thief...', each separate room in an elaborate restaurant has a color scheme of it's own, affecting the color of the character's clothing. '8 1/2 Women' makes a brief attempt at combining various elements, showing pieces of the screenplay with insets of pachinko parlors. The rest of the film is set in a single estate. Frankly, most of the film appeared grainy.

A rich Geneva banker and pachinko parlor owner mourns the loss of his wife. His son tries to comfort his father and suggests, after watching Fellini's '8 1/2', that they fill the house with a harem of women. This will help the father to experience the variety of sexual activity that he has recently discovered and also make the house seem less empty. The pachinko parlors are really a very weak point of the story. It seems to merely serve as a method for Greenaway to introduce Asian females into the story line.

As the father and son populate the harem (with the likes of Amanda Plummer, Toni Collette, Vivian Wu and Polly Walker), they talk incessantly. In most of Greenaway's works, the characters have lengthy conversations, but they were far more interesting. He seems to be trying to shock us with words rather than images in this film. Yes, there is a lot of nudity, both male and female, but it doesn't shock. The discussions they have concerning beastiality, incest, etc., are simply boring.

His films also take a while to make it to the US. Because of this, he frequently can attract up and coming stars to appear in his films, usually nude, before they are really famous. As I mentioned, Toni Collette (Best Supporting Actress nominee for 'The Sixth Sense', 'Muriel's Wedding') appears in the film as a Swedish nun. In 'The Pillow Book', Ewan McGregor played a central part. He has also had Ralph Fiennes and Julia Ormond in his films.

Greenaway has created some of the best films I have ever seen and experienced. Greenaway is a master filmmaker and definitely deserves a larger audience. Unfortunately, this film isn't that good.

    2 out of 5 stars Well, it's a Greenway.......2005-03-15

Peter Greenway's films bore and/or repulse most people. They are probably the not-so-secret favorites of the cultural elitists, the decadently bored bourgeoisie. I'm too plebeian and stupid to be the former and too poor and hungry to be the latter, that's why I don't like his films. Nonetheless, his works are provocative, which either reflects his screwed-up brain cells possibly under the influence of alcohol or drugs or both, or his ingenuity of making a name for himself and maybe even a fortune in the financial and carnal senses, too.

In this dark comedy about sexual excess and experimentation, at one point the question is popped:"Do most film directors make films to realize their sexual fantasies?" The sexist, female-excluding nature of this remark aside, even a fool knows what Greenway's answer is. It's as if he were showing his naked body on the silver screen -- projected through his actors -- and then asking the audience "Do you like it? Do you like *it*?" Snobbish? Perhaps. Deranged. Most likely. Stupidly patronizing? Definitely.

As you probably already know, the story is about a father and son's effort to turn the father's estate in or near Geneva into a harem. The most unsettling scene of the film is not about the women they "seduce" (or buy), but an earlier one in which the son gets intimate with his father. To an uninitated viewer of the utterly-sick-and-gross genre like myself, this was just plain stupid, proof that Greenway is an old pervert who's fascinated with sex with anybody, any animal (even pigs, as he so lovingly describes in the film), or anything.

I don't want to come off (no pun intended!) as desireful of attacking Greenway's superficial, sex-ladden artistry, although as I mentioned in the beginning, his films are repulsive to the general audience. Of course, like Robert Mapplethorpe, he shocks to gain fame, so he can make films to reflect his sick sexual fantasies, and, as the film drily observes in that same scene, to get women (or men? or pigs?) into his bed.

The sexual escapades of the father and son are rather boring, and the sad ending does evoke some sympathy. Somehow the ending reminded me of the Hong Kong erotic flick "Sex & Zen" (the original one with Amy Yip), with the same message that "oops, too much sex is actually bad for your health and relationships." It can't get more pretentious than this.

If you are a Greenway fan, you won't be disappointed. This is a black comedy and there are some very funny spots. But overall, it's a film about self indulgence, of self indulgence, and (despite the quake-destroyed ending), for self indulgence.

    3 out of 5 stars uhm o.k.?.......2004-12-16

Lynne:If it's possible to make a film that could be deemed "enjoyably bad"; do you think its possible to do the opposite?
    Don:What you mean "unenjoyably good?"
    Lynne:Yes.
    Don:Uhm,well--(DOORBELL RINGS)
    Lynne:Excuse me for a moment.
Don:Well no I don't(brief pause) to be quite honest.

    4 out of 5 stars FATHERS AND SONS....GREENAWAY STYLE.......2002-12-12

Typically bizarre and challenging Greenaway film about a man whose wife suddenly dies and can't get past the grief stage. His son moves in with him and they "reestablish" their relationship in a most unorthodox way. Literally. So the son concocts a way to help his father snap out of it. They turn the father's estate into a brothel of sorts with a strange array of women they "collect". This creates a rather Fellini-esque atmosphere and causes some friction among the ladies as well as a couple of their deaths. One woman challenges the rules and turns the tables on the men leading to the father's ultimate death wish and the son's turn to grieve. Greenaway allows the film to run from outlandish black comedy to sadly depressing---a gamut that kind've negates everything we've seen and experienced thus far. There's ample male nudity, bizarre costumes, a truly odd turn from Amanda Plummer as one of the women, striking color and rampant symbolism throughout which makes it a feast for the eyes. If you're a Greenaway fan it's an unusual ride. But I wouldn't recommend it for first time viewers who may find it heavy going.
