Think of it as a male version of Waiting to Exhale. The Brothers similarly features four good friends who offer each other advice and support as they navigate the strange and treacherous waters of romantic relationships. Jackson (Morris Chestnut) is a doctor with serious commitment problems; he has dreams about a woman in a bridal gown aiming a gun at him. Brian (Bill Bellamy) is a lawyer with a caustic view of the opposite sex, inspired in large part by his untrusting and unaffectionate mother; he also has commitment problems. Upwardly mobile professional Terry (Shemar Moore) is a well-muscled womanizer who's finally decided to settle down, but as the wedding draws close it becomes clear that he, too, has commitment problems. Fortunately, the fourth member of the quartet, Derrick (D.L. Hughley), is married and devoted to his family--except that his wife refuses to engage in anything but straight missionary sex, which Derrick sees as manipulative. The Brothers depicts a glamorous world in which everyone is good-looking and well dressed; the number of characters makes it hard to delve into anyone's life with any depth, but the actors are engaging and the script makes an effort to look at the "battle of the sexes" from both sides. The immensely charming Gabrielle Union (from Bring It On) plays the girl who just might convince Jackson to give up his single ways. --Bret Fetzer

An impressively rigorous, unsentimental, and harrowing look at combat during World War II, Band of Brothers follows a company of airborne infantry--Easy Company--from boot camp through the end of the war. The brutality of training takes the audience by increments to the even greater brutality of the war; Easy Company took part in some of the most difficult battles, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the failed invasion of Holland, and the Battle of the Bulge, as well as the liberation of a concentration camp and the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest. But what makes these episodes work is not their historical sweep but their emphasis on riveting details (such as the rattle of a plane as the paratroopers wait to leap, or a flower in the buttonhole of a German soldier) and procedures (from military tactics to the workings of bureaucratic hierarchies). The scope of this miniseries (10 episodes, plus an actual documentary filled with interviews with surviving veterans) allows not only a thoroughness impossible in a two-hour movie, but also captures the wide range of responses to the stress and trauma of war--fear, cynicism, cruelty, compassion, and all-encompassing confusion. The result is a realism that makes both simplistic judgments and jingoistic enthusiasm impossible; the things these soldiers had to do are both terrible and understandable, and the psychological price they paid is made clear. The writing, directing, and acting are superb throughout. The cast is largely unknown, emphasizing the team of actors as a whole unit, much like the regiment; Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston play the central roles of two officers with grit and intelligence. Band of Brothers turns a vast historical event into a series of potent personal experiences; it's a deeply engrossing and affecting accomplishment. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars The Eagles Nest people, the Eagles Nest... .......2007-07-03

This is the Holy Grail of WWII movies. If you are a fan of Saving Private Ryan, Letters to Iwo Jima, Flags of our Fathers, Schindler's List, Tora Tora Tora, Enemy at the gates, or any other classic WWII movie (Kelly's Heroes, ahem!), and have not seen Band Of Brothers...than you need to stop what you are doing and order it right now and watch it...If you can't get it fast enough, still order it and rent it while you wait for your very own copy to come in the mail. I like Saving Private Ryan, but this smokes it out of the water. Smokes it people, smokes it....puff puff glub glub...

4 out of 5 stars Band o' Blood........2007-07-03

I bought this for my boyfriend for Christmas and he was so thrilled to get it . Him, being in the military, loves it for being realistic, and also being a true story that's well played out.

I watched the first disk and was impressed by it, but having a weak stomach, I was squirming every so often, trying to avoid someone get blown up.
Four stars for the gore.

But this collection is a must own for every guy in the military, military buff, or just a guy who loves war stuff.

5 out of 5 stars BoB is true greatness.......2007-07-03

This is one of the best WWII depictions I have ever seen. So many stars in many great roles.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Docu-drama.......2007-07-03

With Shogun a distant 2nd (and that was phenomenal), this is by far the best docu-drama/miniseries filmed to date! In context alone, watching this not only informs the viewer of the hardships of WWII, but of the sacrifice of Easy Company and the soldiers just like them! Thanks for your service gentlemen!!

Description

Nominated for 4 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima tells the untold story of the Japanese soldiers who defended their homeland against invading American forces during World War II. With little defense other than sheer will and the volcanic rock of Iwo Jima itself, the unprecedented tactics of General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (Ken Watanabe, The Last Samurai) and his men transform what was predicted to be a swift defeat into nearly 40 days of heroic and resourceful combat. Their sacrifices, struggles, courage and compassion live on in the taut, gripping film Rolling Stone calls "unique and unforgettable." It is the powerful companion piece to Flags of Our Fathers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unique view from the enemy perspective........2007-06-28

Eastwood doesn't overplay or melodramatize events, uses flashbacks wisely to flesh out character development, and tells the story of the battle itself in a compelling fashion.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and Fresh perspective.......2007-06-27

Being nominated for "Best Picture" by the Academy Awards (or something like that), this movie definitely deserves 5 stars. Taking the viewpoint of the Japanese Imperial Army during this battle is also a very interesting concept, and doesn't portray American soldiers in the stereotypical "super human" like they are in pretty much all other war films. The Blu-Ray disk quality is outstanding. Even when played on 480p (not and HD resolution), it appears brighter and fuller than standard DVD when played on a Playstation 3. If you're a fan of war films, and you have the capability to play Blu-Ray disks, this is definitely a movie for you.

4 out of 5 stars Great Historical Movie.......2007-06-27

Letters is a great movie for history buffs. It brings a new perspective to the genre. Great cast and story. The only bugs I had with this movie are that the movie has a very dark setting, lots of blacks and grays. Not much to look at with the HD version. I was alittle disappointed with the menu and bonus features. The presentation was cheaply done and there are little to no features.

4 out of 5 stars Very good WW2 film from another perspective.......2007-06-09

Most people are familiar with WW2 based on the almost romanticized European theatre, while the battles in the Pacific are less common especially in modern films. Go to Japan and they are basically non-existant.
So I believe that it was a sense of duty to the film makers of Letters from Iwo Jima to tell this story, not just to American audiences but especially for Japanese audiences as well. It's a part of history everyone is beginning to forget and the story of the Japanese men on that island needs to be told, and with this film it is told quite well.
The picture and sound are good being on Blu-ray, and it also has several special features such as press interviews with the cast and director, Clint Eastwood, which are very revealing. The extras are not in high-def however, but still looked good upconverted on my Playstation 3 and HDTV.
This film isn't on my top ten favorite WW2 films, but it is very good and easily worth a watch. If you are a WW2 buff you are sure to be pleased.

1 out of 5 stars Anti-American and BORING.......2007-06-03

If you hate America, and ignore history, this is the movie for you. First of all, the movie was extremely boring, mostly dialog (in Japanese with sub-titles), very little war action. As the movie progresses, you see that it is really a thinly veiled attack on America, and on war in general.
The movie takes a huge left turn, exemplified by two scenes. In the first, the Japanese are shown to risk their own lives to run into enemy fire to recover a wounded US soldier, then they treat him with the last of their morphine. This is in contrast to the scene showing a US soldier shooting 2 unarmed, captured POW's who surrendered so the Americans would give them a meal.
Clint Eastwood must have lost his mind if he thinks my grandfater and his brothers in arms EVER shot an unarmed POW.
Please avoid this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Show. . ........2007-07-04

I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical when I saw the first episode. I decided to give it a shot, though since it came on right after DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and boy was I glad I did. This show is pretty good. It started off slow, but as the storylines progressed, you couldn't help but fall in love with those idiosyncratic Walkers.

(**SPOILERS**)
The first episode where William (Tom Skerritt) dies kicks off the story so beautifully. Although, it is quite becoming cliche that a murder or a death kicks of a story, but the way this played out throughout the season was very effective. His death resonated and caused several reactions from everyone on the canvas and gave Nora (Sally Field) great range. From anger to frustration to deep love and memories. The show played her gambit of emotions throughout and in a special scene, we see her get the closure that she needed to move on, but I won't give that away. Let's just say something sentimental was let go and it was a long time coming after all the things she found out about her dearly departed husband.

The siblings are quirky and interesting characters. They aren't one dimensional. They actually serve a purpose and have their own little quirks that make them likeable. Particularly, Kevin (who I would rank as the best sibling and played by Welsh actor Matthew Rhys) chews up every scene he is in and he's outstanding. Justin and Sarah are great as well (played by Dave Annable and Rachel Griffiths, respectively). Their character's issues were the most real and relatable. Tommy and his wife Julia had a touching storyline that will tug at your heartstrings and the climax played out beautifully.

What really made this show, in my opinion, was the writing. None of these scenes seemed rushed and the writers took their time to weave a tale that had every little thing happen for a reason. There is a lot of symbolism and a lot of imagery that takes place during the season that immediately pulls you in.

Overall, this show is amazing and the acting is wonderful. It's a definite keeper and am excited about seeing Season 2. If you've not seen any of the seasons, by all means pick this one up, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great new show.......2007-06-21

I think this is a great show. Season 1 was fascinating and had many twists and turns, like most families. If the rest of the seasons are as good this will be one of my all time favourites

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Fabulous and a Failure - all wrapped up into one...........2007-06-18

What a breath of fresh air - a blast from the past with the Thirtysomething vibe yet a bit of MTV mockery and nonsense at the same time. Let me begin - you fall in love with an enviable, admirable, desirable family...yet quickly your imagery is shattered. It's not so much the "family secrets" that is troublesome with the deterioration of the family - it is the overall acceptances of these flaws. For a family to live in perfection for umpteen years and suddenly be okay to SPOILER WARNING - infidelity, children out of wedlock, adultery...it just becomes daunting. Most series drag this out over years - but to see this in the very first season and to see all the characters so "okay" with it - makes me shudder to think - does even the American dream of perfection come with its codicils and expectations of cracks in the foundation? It is a quick crumbling from the first episode to mid season that strikes me as disturbing - and it is the embracing of the dramas that makes me wonder how the writes every portrayed such perfection in the beginning. I truly do love each and everyone of the characters - and I find it shocking that in the first season, there were so many new introductions and departures. I think the writers shoved three years of script into the first season -and now it is a bit lost and discombobulated. It is hard to feel for any solo player in particular, or to have cheerleading emotions towards any one person or couple - everyone is laden with drama, and every scene seems rushed and hurried. There were a great deal of missteps in this first season and to write Justin off to war was a grave mistake - as well as I think writing the "offspring" into the mix was a mistake as well. There is enough ill intended drama with the mistress as it is ....why add a child to the mix? I give it high marks - a five!0 for banter, for casting (FANTASTIC) and a "fabulous" for set design, story telling and musical score...but I find it failing in the sense that some of the storylines could have been played out quite a bit..I wish there wasn't an offspring in season one - too rushed...I wish the rewards of the mistress wasn't quite so exorbanant and her role was not so "accepting"...she was a mistress and that should not be downplayed. This is America - let's stand up for values and not dismiss them because a man could not make a decision. How reducing is that for women across the board? It says that we are conventional to fit certain parameters and maybe two will equate to what a man is seeking in total. Unfair and insulting that it was so accepted in the first season of this show. Sally Field's character should have never been so accepting - as if the fact that he provided a nice lifestyle justified 20 years of adultery. No one is expecting "all the answers in 60 minutes'...so please don't give them to us...allow these characters to feel - to be angry, spiteful, remorseful, hateful. Their American Dream was shattered and within the first year they are welcoming what we consider fodder for talk shows into their homes...please don't tell me the sanctuary of marriage is lost - and the solidarity of family is dependant upon what the "man" though was okay and acceptable. The Walkers should represent strength in family values. There aren't elongated storylines therefore it doesn't make any sense to watch the next week - what makes a great story is the anticipation, the heartbeat pause - the wondering of "what will happen next"...and unfortunately, each episode is wrapped up nicely in a blue package and white bow...classic, yet expected.

3 out of 5 stars really brilliant or really dumb.......2007-06-07

This show is strange as it reels back and forth from superlative to the most abysmal writing/acting on television. We have some brilliant actors, especially Sally Field, Matthew Rhys (a Welshman) and Rachel Griffiths (an Aussie). We have some so-so actors, including the formerly wonderful Patricia Wettig, who is at sea here, and the one-note (anyone for Ally McBeal?) Calista Flockhart. Truly the worst story-line of the season has been devoted to her returning to the Walker abode, her career, her love life. Good actors are better when playing up against better actors; bad actors only advertise how bad they are when in a scene with actors who truly shine. We definitely have some bad actors attached to this show, and the unevenness lowers the calibre all on its own, separate from the writing issues. Also, we had sharply written characters in the first episodes, then the series declined in quality, even becoming burlesque (that ridiculous nonsensical McCallister extended family at the engagement party) towards the end. In-between some true highlights, such as the infamous GAME NIGHT episode: Especially memorable is the cut-throat fury of the Walkers competing against their foes; the dinosaur impression by "Kevin"; and "Kevin's" introduction earlier that day to "Jason McCallister" - supposedly the new love interest. Not enough time given to "Kevin" and "Jason," surprisingly, considering how important the relationship is supposed to be, but time spent on a ridiculous "Kitty" kissing the senator in front of the rival family - not even worthy of an old hollywood grade Z film. In the meantime, you have a boring married couple (the eldest Walker son); a couple whose marriage is collapsing (the eldest Walker sibling); the youngest Walker sibling going thru dependency issues and then being sent off to Iraq. This would be more effective if a good actor were playing the part. Actually, the joke on one on-line community is the actor playing "Justin" makes Rob Lowe "the senator" look good in comparison. The show doesn't seem to have a clear direction; whether to be profound or over-the-top like DYNASTY. It might be better - unless you're in love with one of the characters/actors - to consider skipping the boxed set in favor of individual episodes to add to your collection. At this point, the box set isn't released, so I have no idea what the extras will be on the box set, if any.

5 out of 5 stars Can I marry into this family? ~_~.......2007-06-05

I cannot tell you how much I love this show! The entire cast is exemplary. The writing sharp, incisive, poignant, and ultimately real. This is a true family (flaws and all) that mirrors all families on many levels from terminally dysfunctional to unconditionally loving and supportive. You want to spend time with the Walkers. It might be exhausting but never dull, and in the end ... uplifting!

Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers is a two-hour television movie created by J. Michael Straczynski (original creator of the Babylon 5 series) for the Sci-Fi Channel. The telefilm takes place in 2264 after the wars are over and a new age of space exploration has begun. Science-fiction fans are notoriously hard to please, and few have anything good to say about The Legend of the Rangers, produced in 2002 to introduce a spinoff of the popular Babylon 5 TV series. The naysayers have a point. Few elements of this 90-minute pilot, subtitled "To Live and Die in Starlight," will likely be memorialized among the genre's golden moments; the dialogue is often clunky and on-the-nose, the acting is less than stellar, and the effects work, while pretty good, doesn't live up to the standard set by Stargate, Farscape, and others. Nevertheless, there's a reasonably compelling story here, involving the elite Rangers (made up of humans and aliens alike, including the Minbari, who sport "head bones" instead of hair and whose cute little ears are placed on the sides of their necks) and the threat posed to the universe by a mysterious new foe known as "the Hand" (these are some seriously bad dudes, a race that has lain dormant for many years but is now back with a vengeance). Front and center is human Ranger David Martell (played by Dylan Neal). Court-martialed for choosing to save his crew rather then lead them to certain death (in violation of a code mandating that "we do not retreat, whatever the reason"), he's put in command of the Liandra, a ship that's not only funkier than Han Solo's Millennium Falcon but haunted to boot. Of course, as events play out, Martell and his pals end up as the last line of defense against the Hand, not only pitted against these implacable enemies but also dealing with a traitor among the good guys. The themes (honor vs. expediency, dark forces arrayed against peace-seekers, human impetuousness tangling with ancient alien wisdom) are familiar, and the outcome is far from unpredictable. Still, there are a lot less entertaining ways to spend 90 minutes than with Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers. --Sam Graham

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Why is this getting such good reviews?.......2007-06-28

It's pure drek.

Trash. Junk. Probably the worst story ever produced by the Babylon 5 series (yes even worse than Infection).

So why's it getting such high reviews. It deserves no stars.

4 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2007-06-09

This is a good movie because it allows us to see the G'Kar character progress into a later time after the Babylon 5 series. It is not clear exactly what year this takes place, but I think it is after the Drakh plague is cured from the Crusade series, so I would say it would have to be about 2270. I think it was supposed to start a series about the Rangers whose entire story was never told. The DVD is as cheap as they come. It has absolutely no extras. It has no commentary. I think they could have done a better job on the DVD.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-06-05

It does not hold true to the quality we (B5 fans) expect from Babylon 5. G'Kar's dialogue, rather than capturing the depth and likeability of his character, seems artificial, forced, and lame. He has been turned into a comic relief character, and made to spew trite one-liners that G'Kar on Babylon 5 would never have said. I remember him saying something similar to, "Love to stay. Can't. Have to go. Kiss kiss, bye bye." That, and other scenes (like one in which the weapons girl destroys a mine field by screaming and flailing her limbs around in some kind of impractical, immersive, interactive targeting room) make me feel embarrassed for the movie and the franchise, rather than proud of it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a hard-core B5 fan, and you can bet that I've already pre-ordered The Lost Tales. But this particular piece of the B5 world is very disappointing, and I don't recommend it for anyone, B5 fans or otherwise.

3 out of 5 stars I had no idea that Rangers cursed so much..........2007-06-05

The Legend of the Rangers was quite a disappointment considering how much hope there was for another successful Babylon 5 series, though by no means is it a terrible movie.
The year is 2264 and a young Ranger captain with discipline problems (God knows why that was necessary) is assigned command of a 20-year-old derelict ship (!), the Liandra, and ordered to escort a Valen-class ship carrying a number of Interstellar Alliance dignitaries, to a secret location. When the two ships are ambushed by three unidentified craft, the Rangers realize that another great evil is brewing; one that could overshadow the Shadows themselves...
The major setbacks are in relation to:
1) Captain David Martell who is too young, too arrogant, and too obnoxious to be likable. Moreover he lies (!), he curses (!), he cannot control his anger (!), and he bets money in the midst of a crisis! Am I missing something here? It seems he is anything but a Ranger, let alone a Ranger captain!
Tannier was way more acceptable/appropriate as a Ranger and as a captain than Martell, and he proved it beyond any doubt. In addition, Dulann should have been Captain hands down while Martell should have been washing dishes or mopping the floor/deck.
2) In the plot in which they (his superiors and the Grey Council) made an issue of Martell's leaving the battle when he had no weapons to fight with was simply absurd.
3) The enemy ships' tactics were moronic: The 2 enemy ships decided to leave the scene without finishing the job confident that the third one was more than enough. Why??? And why the hurry anyway?
Moreover, the second sophisticated enemy ship did not check for life signs (!) or explosives (!) and took the bait... after that the third sophisticated enemy ship did scan for life signs, but not for explosives such as grenades! Give us a break!
4) Have the Rangers been reduced to the point that there are no White Stars left and top dignitaries travel on "space bricks" escorted by 20-year-old junk, and all that without explanation? The Valen was pathetic as far as ships go, while the Liandra was worse yet, and the Intestellar Alliance's top diplomats/representatives had to endure travel on these ships. The year is 2264, so it's less than two years since Sheridan and Delenn left Babylon 5 for Minbar. What in Valen's name happened???
5) The alien crewmembers, except the Drazi, were rather interesting and quite promising, but the humans were just bad.
Tirk, the Drazi, looks like the big orange fella from Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four. Kit did not even look Japanese, the guy with the disguises belonged on a different show, not B5, while the girl/gunner was just sad...
6) As much as Andreas Katsulas/G'kar tried, Dylan Neal was definitely a poor choice at best for Captain Martell.
7) With so much as stake, they could have had Delenn or Sheridan (or even Vir or Lochley) along with G'kar.
Overall, the story/plot is a good one (with the haunting being an attention-grabbing twist), the special effects are naturally better (technology has progressed), the dialogues were way below average (those responsible should be subjected to corporal punishment), the music was all right (though nothing compared to past scores), while the acting needs a lot of work as the cast carry out their performances rather poorly (one can tell that they are a bit uneasy), however, that is the usually case with most series in the beginning. In short, The Legend of the Rangers is missing that B5 feel, and that pretty much says it all. Please bring back Babylon 5! You owe it to the fans!

4 out of 5 stars The Rangers. Possibilities........2007-05-27

This was a new approach to build on the origional series, and over-all was enjoyable. I liked the hard decisions that had to made by the main character to survive, and the martial arts training scenes. Effects as always were great and the plot was good. I found the aspect of the gunner girl weaving around blasting and yelling in the firing chamber some-what beyond the way this advancement in technology could have been handled, but if that was my only criticism, then it was enjoyable viewing. Could have been expanded to some sort of mini-series perhaps? The option as always was there. No problem adding this to my B5 collection. Give it a go!

After building up the duo's popularity through recordings and several performances on Saturday Night Live, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd--as "legendary" Chicago blues brothers Jake and Elwood Blues--took their act to the big screen in this action-packed hit from 1980. As Jake and Elwood struggle to reunite their old band and save the Chicago orphanage where they were raised, they wreak enough good-natured havoc to attract the entire Cook County police force. The result is a big-budget stunt-fest on a scale rarely attempted before or since, including extended car chases that result in the wanton destruction of shopping malls and more police cars than you can count. Along the way there's plenty of music to punctuate the action, including performances by Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Cab Calloway, and James Brown that are guaranteed to knock you out. As played with deadpan wit by Belushi and Aykroyd, the Blues Brothers are "on a mission from God," and that gives them a kind of reckless glee that keeps the movie from losing its comedic appeal. Otherwise this might have been just a bloated marathon of mayhem that quickly wears out its welcome (which is how some critics described this film and its 1998 sequel). Keep an eye out for Steven Spielberg as the city clerk who stamps some crucial paperwork near the end of the film.--Jeff Shannon

Have you ever had one of those days where you feel tired and alittle bored and depressed? You need a pick-me-up. If that is you, then don't waste anytime. Pop this in your DVD player and start feeling happy. This movie is the purfect cure for a bad day. It makes you laugh hysterical. It is just plain fun. The comedy, the music, the romance, the ridiculous car chases. It's got everything for everybody. And it's done perfectly. Dan and John have fantastic chemistry together and there both remarkably funny. the whole cast is grade-A. How can you go wrong with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, John Candy, Cab Calloway, and director John Landis? You can't. The music is so good, you can't help but dance alittle bit. It's way better then what they call music today. And how can I forget: the car chases. The car chases in this film are the best I have ever seen. THIS IS NOT EVEN A ACTION MOVIE! That shows you how great this movie is. It is wall to wall fun. It's gotta be the greatest musical ever. It's definetly in my top 5 for my favorite movies ever. Everytime I watch it, it makes me smile. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Critically hailed as an instant classic, Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima is a masterwork of uncommon humanity and a harrowing, unforgettable indictment of the horrors of war. In an unprecedented demonstration of worldly citizenship, Eastwood (from a spare, tightly focused screenplay by first-time screenwriter Iris Yamashita) has crafted a truly Japanese film, with Japanese dialogue (with subtitles) and filmed in a contemplative Japanese style, serving as both complement and counterpoint to Eastwood's previously released companion film Flags of Our Fathers. Where the earlier film employed a complex non-linear structure and epic-scale production values to dramatize one of the bloodiest battles of World War II and its traumatic impact on American soldiers, Letters reveals the battle of Iwo Jima from the tunnel- and cave-dwelling perspective of the Japanese, hopelessly outnumbered, deprived of reinforcements, and doomed to die in inevitable defeat. While maintaining many of the traditions of the conventional war drama, Eastwood extends his sympathetic touch to humanize "the enemy," revealing the internal and external conflicts of soldiers and officers alike, forced by circumstance to sacrifice themselves or defend their honor against insurmountable odds. From the weary reluctance of a young recruit named Saigo (Kazunari Ninomiya) to the dignified yet desperately anguished strategy of Japanese commander Tadamichi Kuribayashi (played by Oscar-nominated The Last Samurai costar Ken Watanabe), whose letters home inspired the film's title and present-day framing device, Letters from Iwo Jima (which conveys the bleakness of battle through a near-total absence of color) steadfastly avoids the glorification of war while paying honorable tribute to ill-fated men who can only dream of the comforts of home. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, not historicly correct.......2007-07-04

Not as good as Flags of Our Fathers, it doesn't show the true brutality of the Japanese. Its view is very sympithetic to the Japanese, but still a good movie.

1 out of 5 stars Worst I've seen by Clint Eastwood.......2007-07-04

Watched for 1hour 14 minutes in disappointment. The script is terrible. Don't make the mistake of watching this movie. Why all the hype? How can this be a Clint Eastwood directed movie? Firstly, this movie makes fun of sacrifice. It makes fun of the Japanese commitment to Japan. For sure I do not know precisely what happened at Iwo Jima, all I know is that 22000 fought till only 216 remained. That is a victory. As big as the firefighters of 9/11. It is something, it seems that Clint Eastwood, that willingly directed this movie, will never understand. Having no choice in life but to die honorably.

Iwo Jima was a last-stand before the enemy reached Japan, much like the Alamo. Soldiers don't harbor anti-war sentiment when your home and family is threatened - you pull together. Fight and die together. I didn't get the idea that there were 22000 soldiers on the island. The enemy forces were realistically depicted. This is a clear anti-war movie - only problem is that it makes fun of the commitment of a die-hard enemy facing destruction.

No one can deny that Clint Eastwood is a good filmaker. But all of his films are so dark (literally and figuratevly) that it kind of bores me. LfIG was no different. It was an "inspirational" film that did make you think and makes a good discussion to have with your father, but I found it way too slow. It was relatively long and they were in a cave most of the time. It was okay but in the end, I say it was too long and boring. But good acting and writing and directing

Well, bless my beautiful hide! Director Stanley Donen invests this rollicking musical with a hearty exuberance. Howard Keel, with his big-as-all-outdoors baritone, stars as a bold "mountain man" living in the Oregon woods who brings home a bride (plucky songbird soprano Jane Powell) to his six slovenly brothers. Taming the rambunctious brood, Jane proceeds to make gentlemen of them so they can woo sweethearts of their own. But old habits die hard: their flirting gives way to fighting in the film's celebrated barn-raising scene, a lively acrobatic dance number exuberantly choreographed by Michael Kidd. Big brother chimes in with his own brand of advice--an old-fashioned kidnapping! Donen manages to get away with such a politically incorrect plot by investing the boys with a innocent sweetness, most notably the youngest brother played with genial earnestness by Rusty (Russ) Tamblyn (pre-West Side Story). This modest production became a huge hit and remains one of MGM's best-loved musical comedies, an energetic, high-kicking classic. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Howard Keel and Jane Powell are rapturous newlyweds who tame his six rowdy bachelor brothers in the wild Oregon backwoods in this Best Score Academy Award(R)-winning song-and-dance-filled comedy.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Musical!.......2007-05-10

To start with this set of 2 DVDs came in an excellent case making for good storage. While the Cinemascope version on disc one is most enjoyable with top class reproduction of image as well as sound, the second disc with the alternate widescreen version is nearly as good and it is difficult to see the difference. The Commentary by Derector Donen is most informative and shows how in spite of odds against it the movie was made into a great masterpiece. The Donen Trailer galary gives useful priew of some movies making a purchase decission of these essier. On disc 2 we have "making of the the movie" as also MGM Jubilee Overgture, both of which are worth watching and listening to. Bonus material on both the discs hence are enjoyable. The movie itself has great songs with wonderful music and dances from start to finish, especially that at the barn raising event. The subtle comedy is also very much enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Top 5 musicals of all time.......2007-04-24

Seven Brides is listed as one of five top musicals of all time. Great scenes include: 1. Love at first site, single day marriage proposal 2. the first dinner 3. the wedding night 4. clothes washed and clean shaved brothers 5. Ben fighting three men, "why help, there just three small ones" 6. learning to court 7. barn raisen 8. capture of the Sabean women 9. the shot gun wedding.

The music and Russian dance culture was amazing. The mountains in the background put the view in the alps. The energy of this film acting and singing is amazing. A great family treat.

Movie 1: The Gathering
Alien envoys come to the giant space station in the pilot that launched the five-year TV series.

Movie 2

Amazon.com

The Babylon 5 pilot movie The Gathering was originally broadcast in 1993 a full year ahead of the regular show. A somewhat dull tale of an attempt to assassinate Koch, the Vorlon ambassador to B5, the feature served to introduce Commander Jeffery Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) and Security Chief Michael Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle) as well as familiarize the audience with the unique environment of a five-mile-long space station in the year 2257. Missing many of the main cast, and suffering from a leaden pace and mediocre music score, series creator J Michael Straczynski later improved The Gathering by tightening the cut for a special edition (the version released on DVD), adding some deleted character moments and commissioning a new score from series composer Christopher Franke.

Four new TV movies were part of the deal to syndicate Babylon 5. In the Beginning is a prelude set 10 years before Babylon 5, telling the story of the Earth-Minbari war. Told retrospectively, many of the mysteries revealed gradually in the main series are recounted, making the show a collection of spoilers for newcomers while adding little for established fans. It is effective to see events only previously talked about, and enjoyable to have most of the main cast playing younger versions of themselves. River of Souls is a self-contained adventure featuring a return of the Soul Hunters from Season One, while Thirdspace offers a spectacular Lovecraftian space opera which slots into the saga after the end of the Shadow War. A Call to Arms is the most important of the TV films, laying the ground for the future TV series Crusade. Set five years after the Shadow War, it tells the story of a Drahk revenge attack on Earth. A final showcase for Bruce Boxleitner as Sheridan, the story fits between fifth-season episodes "Objects at Rest" and "Sleeping in Light." The cliffhanger ending sets the scene for new starship Excalibur to boldly go on a five-year mission to explore strange new worlds and find a cure for the Shadow virus infecting the Earth. --Gary S. Dalkin

Babylon 5 - The Gathering: "And so it begins..."
A good pilot to an excellent series, Babylon 5 - The Gathering, brings to the screen the parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major station under Human control in neutral territory.
The setting is the Babylon 5 space station orbiting Epsilon 3. The year is 2257, nine years after the Earth-Minbari War (one year before the series begins), and representatives from the four major space-faring races, the Centauri, Humans, Minbari, Narns, as well as numerous minor races have all gathered at B5 in a last effort at maintaining galactic peace. The arrival, however, of the fifth major space-faring race's ambassador, the Vorlon Kosh, will result in quite a bit of turbulence...
Michael O'Hare, Mira Furlan, Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, carry out their performances well though one can tell that they are a bit uneasy, as is the case with most series in the beginning. 4 Stars

In the Beginning: Guaranteed to shed a tear
The year is 2278 and an elderly Emperor Mollari sensing his end is nearing narrates the story of the Earth-Minbari War and its heroes to a young Centauri boy, his sister and their nanny.
Bruce Boxleitner, Mira Furlan, Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors' performances are highly commendable.
In the Beginning contains a lot of information found within the first four seasons of B5 and then more, therefore, it should be viewed at some point during season V, preferably right before Sleeping in Light, the last of the original episodes. 5 Stars

Thirdspace: "It's anti-life itself"
Though I haven't yet read the book (for which I've heard good things), Thirdspace the movie was quite a disappointment.
Set during Season IV, the crew of Babylon 5 recovers a huge ancient artifact, which when activated could bring more doom and destruction than the Shadows themselves...
1) To start with there is no Garibaldi, Gkar or Londo and their absence is definitely felt.
2) Everybody is too stiff. Performances seem forced and not natural, especially Dellen and Vir who are not their usual selves.
3) Sheridan scoots through an intense space battle in a space suit (!), dodging both friendly and hostile fire (!), plants a nuke manually (!), gets out avoiding the guardians (!), survives the nuclear blast and then jokes with Delenn... Hmmm... Am I missing something?
4) Finally the elevated level of horror served as a repellent more than anything else.
2.5 Stars

The River of Souls: "Life in Death... Immortality!"
The year is 2263, six months after President Sheridan's departure for Minbar, and the Soul Hunters return with an unexpected visit to Babylon 5... en mass.
Though most of the major characters are absent (similarly to Thirdspace), excluding Captain Lochley, Security Chief Zack Allen, Lt Corwin, and Michael Garibaldi, the River of Souls turns out to be excellent in every possible way; the setting, the plot, the dialogues, the special effects, and the music are all wonderful!
There is also the surprise, though not great, appearance by Martin Sheen, who probably should have stuck to the original plan and played the archeologist instead of the Soul Hunter. 4.5 Stars

A Call to Arms: Now this is a Babylon 5 Movie!
AMAZING from start to finish, A Call to Arms brings to the screen the long awaited conflict with the hated Drakh! The Year is 2267 and President Sheridan is contacted by the Techno-Mages who have been keeping tabs on the Shadows' former servants/allies and who inform him that the Drakh are on the warpath. Their target... Earth!
Bruce Boxleitner, Jerry Doyle, Jeff Conaway, Tracy Scoggins, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)!
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the special effects are simply incredible!
I wish I could give it 6 Stars!!! KEEP'EM COMING!!!

5 out of 5 stars THEY DID A BETTER JOB ON THIS SET OF DVDS........2007-05-28

THIS SET OF DVDS HAS MORE COMMENTARY THAN THE SEASON 1-5 DVDS OF BABYLON 5. IT DOES NOT HAVE A LOT OF EXTRAS, BUT THEY CERTAINLY PUT MORE TIME, THOUGHT, EFFORT, AND MONEY INTO THIS SET THAN THEY DID THE OTHERS. THE PACKAGING IS A LETTER BETTER TOO. IN THE END THE MOVIES ARE VERY GOOD. MY FAVORITES WERE "IN THE BEGINNING", AND THE CRUSADE PILOT "A CALL TO ARMS." "A CALL TO ARMS," IS AS MUCH A CRUSADE STORY AS A BABYLON 5 STORY. I DO NOT KNOW WHY THEY DID NOT PUT IT ON THE CRUSADE SET OF DVDS.

5 out of 5 stars Babylon5. The Movies. A must-have accompliment........2007-05-27

Babylon 5, The Movies are the icing on the cake to the wonderful origional series. They enhanse the already powerful plot and give the viewers a fuller path where this great epic is headed. I found The Gathering to be entertaining, but some-what primitive in its alien portraits, especially where Delenn was concerned. However her appearance was quickly rectified in the movie, In The Beginning, and she became more delightful as the series progressed. The origional slightly stilted characterisations eased out after that first pilot and the cast came to live their parts. I personally believe that the movie, In The Beginning, should be viewed first as a kick in to anyone wanting to become involved with whole series. Anyone who owns, or enjoys Babylon 5, the series wouldn't want to be with-out this great set of Movies.

2 out of 5 stars B5-Movie Collection.......2007-05-21

One of the movies - 'In the Beginning' got to me all scratched up. I tried playing it but it froze up on me toward the end of the movie. I gave Amazon 2 stars for this because at least they promptly refunded me my entire purchase back + the shipping. I don't know what happened but it's kind of wierd that only one of the DvDs was damaged. It was in the socket when I got it too so I don't think it was caused by shipping. Oh well, buyer beware I guess.

Premiering just six months after the release of the game that inspired it, the animated series The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 integrated elements from the game into a serial-style cartoon that pitted heroic plumbers Mario and Luigi against the reptilian King Koopa and a squad of new villains. Over the course of 13 double episodes, Koopa (who is also occasionally addressed by his American handle, Bowser) and his seven unpleasant children, the Koopa Kids (or Koopalings) wreaked havoc in both the Mushroom World and the "real world," including stints in Hollywood, Venice, Hawaii, and Washington, D.C. (which includes a guest appearance by then-President George H. W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush!). Coming to the defense are the heroic plumbers Mario and Luigi, as well as Princess Toadstool and her faithful friend Toad, who thwart the Koopa menace by using many of the power-ups and aspects of the Super Mario Bros. 3 game. As with the previous Super Mario Bros. TV series, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, Super Mario Bros. 3 is long on action and fun and short on logic, and while the animation and scripting has dated poorly, the nostalgia inspired by seeing these shows again after almost two decades should help in overlooking any flaws. Longtime fans should know that several original songs have been removed from the episodes and replaced by generic background music; also missing is the infamous guest appearance by Milli Vanilli in "Kootie Pie Rocks," though this was pulled during the show's syndicated run. The three-disc set includes all 13 double episodes on two discs, while the third disc is devoted to supplemental features like "The Writers' Bible" (a rather bland string of recaps that serve to familiarize viewers with the characters and situations), a gallery of background and concept art, and a menu of original songs from the series. -- Paul Gaita

Description

After sending the infamous King Koopa into the Banishment Zone, the heroic plumbers, Mario and Luigi, finally make it home to Brooklyn. But just when the Mushroom People think they're safe, Koopa escapes and brings with him seven of the most vile creatures the world has ever known, the Koopa Kids! Now only the Super Mario Bros. can rid the Mushroom Kingdom of Koopa and his deviant minions…or can they?

3 out of 5 stars A great old Saturday morning series, with a moderate DVD presentation........2007-06-27

This, by far, was my favorite of all of the Super Mario cartoons that were produced, even if it did have the most un-original title ever (the fact that the number 3 is in the title kind of makes it laughable).

It is a very fun show, and is based rather closely on the 3rd Super Mario game from the original NES. This had some very, very memorable episodes, and what I really liked about it was the presentation of the various powers that the Mario Bros. could use in the actual game.

Now, this was a show produced for kids, so if you are an adult, and didn't watch this when it was originally on, you may want to bypass it now, as it's something that you probably won't find much entertainment in at this point (with maybe the exception of anyone who is an EXTREME Super Mario fan, partiuclarly of the 3rd game, but somehow missed this show the first time around).

As far as I can tell, all of the episodes are intact, pretty much in there entirety.

There is, of course, the issue of the infamous Milli Vanilli episode, in which Mario, Luigi, the Princess, and Toad all go to the 'real world' to see their concert, and the music group gets kidnapped by King Koopa. Now, it is true that the music has been changed. In the original airing of this episode, Milli Vanilli are shown on stage performing "Blame it on the Rain". However, after the whole lip sync scandal broke out, this episode was re-edited with generic music in the place of the previous song. Unfortunately, this proved to make the concert scene make little sense because the generic music doesn't even have any lyrics, and yet Milli Vanilli are shown on stage moving their mouths and singing (or, lip syncing, if you prefer). Then, Koopa shows up to kidnap them, and makes a comment saying "Blame it on King Koopa", which is a joke that no longer makes sense in the edited version.

There's also a scene later in the episode where after being kidnapped, Milli Vanilli are supposed to do a private concert for Koopa's daughter, Kootie Pie (a.k.a Wendy, as she is known in the game.. the Koopa kid's names were different in the game and cartoon). Milli Vanilli point out that they have no back up band. In a rescue attempt, Mario, Luigi, Toad, and the Princess disguise themselves as a back up band to help rescue them. The joke here is supposed to be that none of them know how to play any instruments, so the music is supposed to sound bad with Milli Vanilli singing over it as they normally would. Unfortunately, this has also been changed, and oddly with the same generic music from earlier in the episode. So, the same music that everyone was excited about and dancing to at the concert is now supposed to sound horrible to everyone (except Kootie Pie, who is enjoying it).

It is true that the edited version is the one on this set. However, contrary to what another reviewer has posted, aside from the changes that I've listed above, everything else seems to be intact (at least as far as I can remember.. it has been years since I've seen this on TV). That other reviewer states that all references to Milli Vanilli are removed, and that is not true.

The name "Milli Vanilli" is mentioned frequently throughout the episode, and the Princess is even wearing a shirt that has their name on it. It is true that King Koopa at one point does refer to them as "Silly the Willies", but that's because he keeps messing up the name of the band and his kids have to keep correcting him.

Sorry for the long explanation for this one episode, but I thought this was important to explain for die hard fans of the show who remember this episode and are debating if they should get it or not.

The DVD presentation is a mixed bag. The menus of Discs 1 and 2 are nice. They are set up to look like the Mario 3 game. They feature Mario and Luigi respectively, and in both cases, it shows the character from the side, as if in the video game, and they hit a "?" mark block, causing things on the menu to change/happen when you make a selection. It is nicely set up.

Where the DVD disappoints (though, not suprisingly) is in the quality of the video. It has not been remastered, and there are even some brief parts (at least in a couple of the episodes I've watched so far) where it looks like the masters these were copied from may have been damaged to some degree. I noticed this damage issue in the final episode (or two episodes, if you count the fact that each one is made of 2 smaller stories). There are a couple of points where the screen just goes gray for a second. And it's not my personal disc, other people have had the same problem (apparently the master was indeed damaged, and from what I have heard there is nothing that Shout Factory can do about it).

The general video quality isn't suprising though, since most of the previous Shout Factory releases like the Mario Super Show and Captain N have not been remastered either. But, still, the video quality does knock down my review by a couple of stars. And the fact that the one episode has some damage is annoying.

The 3rd disc has some extra features, including character descriptions, and explanations about various aspects of the show. There is some interesting stuff, but is does get to be pretty redundant. While they are nice enough, the feature easily could have been split up and put on the first two discs. The total running time of them all doesn't seem to add up to enough to warrant a whole separate disc. I think they did this just to make it seem like you are getting more than you really are.

Still, all in all the cartoon is a lot of fun, so if you are a fan of Mario, and if you watched this show back in the day, I do recommend picking it up.

1 out of 5 stars Edited Show??? No Thanks.......2007-06-15

I appreciate the Amazon.com reviewer informing us that this show is edited. I don't see how Kootie Pie Rocks is intact with no Milli Vanill appearance; the whole episode is devoted to characters talking about Milli Vanill (Bowser calls them "Silly the Willies") & the Mario Brothers have to rescue them from Koopa Castle!!! Not seen it in ages but that and the edited music make this a no sale for me. Good thing I've got most of the episodes on tape. Hence, why would I waste my money to buy something I already have on VHS & could convert to DVD much more cheaply????

5 out of 5 stars The best thing ever.......2007-05-04

Im from England UK and these DVDs from this company are so great I have to import them! In the UK we have some Mario DVDs but they are not a collection, just random episodes and then they stop making them. Im thankful for NTSC TVs and multi-region DVD players. Its a shame there not avaliable in other regions cause I think they would sell like hotcakes. I remember this show in the UK on channel 4 on Saturday morning. I used to wake up to late and miss it at times.

This Show was one of the best shows ever! and I'm so glad its gonna be on DVD, also Captain N, Sonic, and the other Mario DVDs are great!

Delenn's future love interest, Captain John Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner) arrived on Babylon 5 in the first episode of season 2, "Points of Departure." The show marked the handing over of command of B5 to Sheridan from Commander Jeffery Sinclair, actor Michael O'Hare becoming a victim of studio politicians who wanted a bigger star in the leading role. This excellent installment also revealed more about why the Minbari surrendered to Earth at the Battle of the Line when they were on the verge of victory. "Revelations" explains that Sheridan's wife, Anna, died during an archaeological survey of the world Z'ha'dum, the name being just one of many references to Tolkien's the Lord of the Rings (the bridge at Khazad-Dum). "The Geometry of Shadows" introduced the Technomages, characters who featured more significantly in the ill-fated spinoff series Crusade (1999), while "The Coming of Shadows" proved to be Babylon 5's finest hour to date. The story of political intrigue foreshadowing the fate of two of the major characters beat Apollo 13, Toy Story, 12 Monkeys, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "The Visitor" to win the Hugo award for Best Dramatic Presentation at the 1996 World Science Fiction Convention and proved so powerful that J. Michael Straczynski included it in his Complete Book of Scriptwriting.

"And Now for a Word" took the unusual step of presenting a day-in-the-life of B5 seen through the eyes of a TV news crew, just as the Narn declared war on the Centauri. The inclusion of a PSI-Corps commercial paid homage to Paul Verhoeven's satirical ads in Robocop (1987), while his later Starship Troopers (1997) seemed at times like a spoof of B5's earnest space opera. In "In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum," Sheridan learns that Morden was on the ship on which Anna died; the episode sees the captain pushed to his limits by grief and determination to discover why Morden survived. Three exceptional shows conclude the season. The Narn-Centauri war escalates in "The Long, Twilight Struggle," Sheridan faces a most unusual ordeal in "Comes the Inquisitor," and in "The Fall of Night" all hope of peace is shattered as a nerve-racking assassination attempt reveals a startling secret about Ambassador Kosh. --Gary S. Dalkin

5 out of 5 stars This Scifi Series is Great.......2007-07-03

The second season is the excellent. It is the start of a wild exciting ride through the Babylon 5 story. Worth every penny

5 out of 5 stars They don't make them like this anymore........2007-05-12

The second season of Babylon 5 is one of the best sci fi out there. The main leads grow in such a way that even by the end of the season I felt a bit of sadness for Londo, even though he was responible for the near genocide of a whole race! The actors are so good and the storys so compelling, that outside of the 3rd season of STNG I would say that this is a good as it gets! I wish there was more tv like this on the air now!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Service.......2007-03-22

I have been slowly collecting all the Babylon 5 seasons, using coupons and discounts to get the best price. I bought this one from amazon because the price was lower than normal for amazon. These disk sets have a problem in that some times a disk or two becomes dislodged and floats around the case. This allows the disk to get scratched so that it will not play properly. So far this has happened everywhere i bought, and i had to return the disk set at least once before i had a good set. This is where amazon excells. There is no fee to return a damaged item for replacement (not true of other online sellers). Plus, the day i logged in and indicated i needed a replacement set, another set was shipped out to me and i had it in a few days, before i even mailed back the first shipment. Another seller took a month to proces my return and ship back a replacement, and i had to pay to return the damaged product. I would strongly recommend checking any of the Babylon 5 series disks closely (i fast forwarded each disk to check for places where it skipped or go stuck). This product has serious packaging issues, but amazon has you covered if there are any problems.

5 out of 5 stars Babylon 5 - The Complete Second Season.......2007-03-21

I have always enjoyed watching this series and have been waiting for the chance to be able to watch anytime I want. I plan on buying the whole set eventually.

5 out of 5 stars Could it get any more addictive? Probably not..........2007-03-19

An excellent series, Babylon 5, brings to the screen the parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major station under Human control in neutral space.
The setting is the Babylon 5 space station orbiting Epsilon 3. The date is 2259, eleven years after the Earth-Minbari War, and representatives from the five major space-faring races, the Centauri, Humans, Minbari, Narns, and the Vorlons, as well as numerous minor races have all gathered at B5 in a last effort at maintaining galactic peace. This peace, however, is in jeopardy when two of the major races resort to war...
Bruce Boxleitner, Mira Furlan, Andrea Thompson (who is HOT!!!), Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the series is without a doubt guaranteed to provide hours of entertainment.
The only setback is in relation to the not-so-hidden agenda of promoting a specific religion through Ivanova. What is the point? What a waste of precious minutes of an otherwise wonderful show.
Nevertheless, that is so minor and insignificant compared to:
1) The OUTSTANDING plot and subplots that keep getting better and better!
2) The GREAT characters (especially the aliens ones) that become more and more developed, and
3) The wonderful feeling of being ADDICTED to the show and wanting more!

Babylon 5 is a series definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!
