Teen idol Mandy Moore (A Walk to Remember) learns how to deal with an awful lot--How to Deal crams divorce, teen pregnancy, a wedding, a car accident, and a pot-smoking grandmother into a single year in the life of Halley Martin (Moore). Halley's so resentful of her parents' divorce (and her father's impending remarriage) that she resolves not to fall in love--so of course a hunky guy named Macon (Trent Ford) decides that she's the girl for him and woos her with gentle persistence. Two things save all of this from being a teenage soap opera: First, a refreshingly realistic (though not explicit) and unjudgmental look at teenage sex; second, a sterling supporting cast, including Allison Janney (The West Wing), Peter Gallagher (sex, lies, and videotape), and Dylan Baker (Happiness), alongside pleasant young actors like Alexandra Holden (Sugar and Spice). --Bret Fetzer
Description
Mandy Moore stars as Halley, a young hip high school student who believes that love will never happen to her and that her life is a mess. Her father is marrying a woman she can't stand, her mother is alone, her sister's wedding plans are taking over her life and her friends at school only care about cheerleading and football. All seems lost until she meets a boy who shows her what love is all about.

Finally, a GOOD teen movie... .......2007-05-14
I love a good cheesy teen movie, and I was expecting How to Deal to be another one of those movies in the vein of Mean Girls or John Tucker Must Die. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. How to Deal is not your typical teen comedy and, in fact, is more drama than comedy. Mandy Moore plays a teenage girl who is dealing with her parents' divorce, her father's remarriage, her sister's engagement, and her own cynical views on true love. At the same time, a close friend dies and she finds out her best friend is pregnant. This is a movie rife with teen issues that rarely see the light of day, and it's handled in a clever and amusing way. The characters are thoroughly fleshed out, so there's no point where you're sitting around wondering about their motivations. And all these issues are covered from the sides of both the teenagers and the adults. How to Deal is not just another teen movie. It's a GOOD teen movie, which sadly is a rarity these days.
heart warming.......2007-03-28
it's a striaght out all the way around great movie and heart warming
Dull...........2006-11-26
Mandy Moore is just so cute. Look at cute Mandy Moore pout for the cameras. Look at cute Mandy vow never to fall in love...yada, yada, ho hum. In a world where divorce is so common place-this movie stretches to show teenage angst in such a loveless world...and fails. Totally predictable and really just a waste of film. If they eliminated the pot smoking grandmother-which should have been funnier than it was-this would have been better as a project for the Disney Channel.
How to Deal...........2006-11-14
I LOVE THIS MOVIE...
I love everything about it.... I think it was wonderfully directed, and magnificently cast. =)
It's based on the books "One Summer", and "Keeping the Moon" by an amazing young author named Sarah Dessen... If you have not read the books-- they're highly recommended.
Mandy Moore plays Halley Martin, who is a typical high school girl... Scorned by the painful divorce her parents went through, annoyed by an overly perfect sister who is entirely too caught up in planning her wedding, and a best friend who is "in love" and just lost her virginity.
Halley seems lost in all this mess until a tragedy brings her Macon (Trent Ford). Macon changes how Halley feels about love, and shows her that there is something amazing to it.
Halley experiences so much in this movie. It's an absolute must see for everyone. =)
Moore reason to love this movie...and it's star!.......2006-10-07
I'm a huge fan of Mandy Moore. I believe she's a very talented young actress/singer who has range we don't give her credit for. With `How to Deal' Mandy tries to grow up a bit, playing against the teen sweetheart and going for teen angst instead. Here Moore plays Halley, a girl at ends with her family, frustrated with her parents divorce, her sisters wedding and her fathers impending remarriage, not to mention her best friend has now fallen in love (love is something Halley does not believe in) and so Halley now feels like the only sane person around. Then she meets Macon (Trent Ford) who is smitten with Halley despite her repelling attitude and so he pursues her, much to her dissatisfaction. But, as fate would have it, Halley ends up falling for Macon, hard, and she starts to doubt her former philosophies on love and life. Mandy uses a lot of maturity as she tackles this role and the film as a whole has a very realistic and mature outlook on every subject crossed, from divorce to teen pregnancy to death and teen relationships, `How to Deal' is a perfect example of how to make a smart, mature teen film that appeals to more than 12-year-old girls.

With refreshing intelligence, A Walk to Remember offers welcome relief from the recent onslaught of teen-movie crudeness. Adapted from the novel by Nicholas Sparks and transplanted from 1958 to the present day, this admirable teen romance recognizes that two 18-year-olds--Landon (Shane West) and Jamie (pop singer Mandy Moore)--can be smart, mature, and sensible about the very real love they share. He's a popular kid in the cool crowd. She's got a goody-goody reputation as the dowdy daughter of a local minister (Peter Coyote); her values and priorities aren't rooted in peer pressure, and Landon feels blessed by her self-assured nobility. Their mutual affection inevitably heads into Love Story territory, but the movie is honest enough to survive its own schmaltz, and its attractive cast (including Daryl Hannah as Landon's mom) embraces a tone of sincerity and mutual respect. Finally... a teen movie with teens you can admire. --Jeff Shannon
