In 1987, almost a hundred years after its first production, the romantic story of Cyrano de Bergerac found new life in a winsome film written by Steve Martin. Roxanne updates the tale with a smart '80s spin, yet writer-star Martin stays close to the old-fashioned heart of the matter. He plays a small-town firefighter named C.D. Bales, whose otherwise unremarkable existence is crowned by an amazingly long nose. He falls for the world's most beautiful astronomer (Daryl Hannah), but he is embarrassed by the size of his proboscis and prefers to stay on the sidelines. Like Cyrano, the shy C.D. instead helps a handsome friend (Rick Rossovich) woo the fair lady by providing flowery sentiments and soulful poetry. Not only does the story still work, but Australian director Fred Schepisi captures a dreamy grace in his visual design for the film (some of which will be lost without the widescreen format). Set in Washington State, but filmed in the hilly ski resort of Nelson, British Columbia, the location seems like a fairy-tale town, nearly as unreal as Steve Martin's nose. --Robert Horton

In this 1982 courtroom drama written by David Mamet and directed by Sidney Lumet, Paul Newman found the perfect role for a transitional period of his stellar career. As alcoholic Boston lawyer Frank Galvin, Newman shook off his screen persona as a handsome, blue-eyed hunk to portray an aging, weary man whose best years are behind him, with a shot-glass future that looks very bleak indeed. But when Galvin is given a chance to redeem himself--by proving medical negligence in the case of a comatose woman--he makes one final effort to regain his self-respect and tarnished reputation. He's an underdog against formidable odds, facing a powerful, politically connected lawyer (James Mason, slick as ever) who will do anything to win his case, regardless of professional ethics. Further complicating matters is a woman (Charlotte Rampling) who only appears to be worthy of Galvin's trust and love, until Galvin's best friend and colleague (Jack Warden) proves otherwise. Excellent as both courtroom drama and riveting character study, the film crackles with Mamet's sharp dialogue; and Lumet's direction is a brilliant example of forceful restraint. The film gave Newman one of the best roles of his career; many felt he deserved the Oscar (he lost to Ben Kingsley in Gandhi) that would belatedly be given to Newman for The Color of Money. Along with Hud, Cool Hand Luke, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Verdict ranks highly as a signature performance by one of America's all-time greatest actors. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Sidney Lumet's riveting courtroom drama earned five Oscar(r) nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor for Paul Newman's towering performance as a down-and-out alcoholic attorney who stumbles onto one last chance to redeem himself. When attorney Frank Calvin (Newman) is given an open-and-shut medical malpractice case that no one thinks he can win, he courageously decides to refuse a settlement from the hospital. Instead he takes the case, and the entire legal system, to court.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Newman's Finest Performance, in Tale of Redemption..........2007-06-22

In a career of unforgettable portrayals, "The Verdict" stands as Paul Newman's pinnacle; as a shattered idealistic lawyer, on an alcoholic road to self-destruction, finding a chance at redemption, he is absolutely perfect. With respect to Ben Kingsley, Newman SHOULD have won the 'Best Actor' Oscar in 1982!

Directed by Sidney Lumet, from a remarkably candid screenplay by David Mamet, this is a film that never makes a wrong step. Newman's 'Frank Galvin' is not heroic, or even likable, in the film's opening scenes, but he finds, in a simple malpractice suit, an injustice so blatant that he sees an opportunity to redeem himself...but he'll have to defeat a rich, duplicitous law firm (headed by legendary James Mason), argue before an indifferent judge (Milo O'Shea), and, worst of all, face betrayal from within his tiny circle of friends, if he has any hope of rising out of his personal 'hell'.

With a superb cast, including the remarkable Jack Warden as his ex-mentor/best friend, and Charlotte Rampling, as the woman he trusts far too much, "The Verdict" is raw, powerful, and occasionally disturbing, but never dull!

This new two-disc edition is certainly THE version to own, with commentary by Newman and Lumet, and an entire disc of extras, including Lumet and Newman's personal recollections, and several 'Making of' documentaries, from 1982, and today. You'll never find a more complete presentation of a truly extraordinary film!

There are few films that I can watch, again and again, and never grow tired of..."The Verdict" is one. Bravo to Newman, Lumet, Mamet, and everyone involved in creating this classic!

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing. .......2007-01-01

The Verdict is one of the most powerful films I've ever seen in my life. Frankly, I'm not sure what to rave over more--Newman's acting ability or the script itself. Imagining a physically gifted and charismatic man like Newman as an alcoholic loser on his last legs is not an easy thing to do, but his performance accomplishes this seamlessly. As for Mason, what a loss his death was because even nearing the end of his life he could do absolutely everything. His portrayal of Concannon is quite amazing. In O'Shea, Warden, and Rampling the lesser characters become quite major, and the courtroom finale is so good that I watched it several times over again. This should be on everyone's Top 50 list, in my humble opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Great film and an unforgettable acting performance.......2006-11-10

Frank Galvin (Paul Newman) is on a downward slide as an ambulence-chasing alcoholic lawyer when his associate (Jack Warden) tries to slap him out of his stupor in order to remind him that he is throwing away an opportunity to get back on his feet. Galvin starts going through the motions of collecting information about a case that involves a young child-bearing woman who suffered brain damage as a result of being given the wrong anaesthesia. Some of his old fight comes back to him when he starts to realize the negligence involved, and before he has thought much about it, he starts on the path of what he takes to be doing the right thing. But doing the right thing can be a formidible undertaking. He had once lost a prestigious job and his wife had divorced him after he tried to do right thing. Now, as he struggles to clear out the cobwebs, before he realizes it, he has managed to alienate almost everyone, including his previously very trusting clients, and faces almost all by himself a power structure that is aware of and capable of subverting his every move.

The judge (Milo O'Shea) is always eating in his chambers, the defense attorney (James Mason) and his legions of lawyers are constantly winking and nodding at each other: they are like caricatures used as devices to condense the viciousness of self-interest. The greatness of this film especially concerns the script and the acting force of Paul Newman. The contrast is striking between the muddled, uncertain man on the verge of being a complete failure and the flashes of brilliance that he shows as he fights with his back against the wall. Some of the oratory has a Shakespearian quality to it.

5 out of 5 stars There are no other cases. This is the case!.......2006-06-30

That was Paul Newman's response to Jack Warden, as Warden massages Mr. Newman's back and tries to assuage him by telling him there will be other cases. ( Pardon me, I always wanted to use the word ASSUAGE in a review ).
I live in Connecticut, and my wife and I drive thru Westport regularly, on our way to Trader Joe's. I know exactly where Mr. Newman lives,( I'll never tell ) and I always kid to my wife,
" I wonder what Paul is doing today? " Then I jokingly say that maybe we'll see him at Trader Joe's ( grocery store ) or at Mario's ( great place for lunch or dinner). Of course if I ever did actually meet him, I'd be stammering and babbling just like Jackie Gleason used to do in his old Honeymooner's television show. But enough of my dreaming. So, how was the movie? Sometimes there are events or moments in a movie that stay with you for a long time. In this movie, those times were: " There are no other cases..This is the case! " and the confrontation Mr. Newman had with the judge, when he proclaims, " I know about you! " as he taps his fingers on the judge's desk. Classic moments.
If I ever had a chance to become an actor, and had my pick of
acting coaches, one of them would be Paul Newman. I'm not sure how he does it, but somehow, after watching him on screen for a few moments, I forget he is Paul Newman, and believe he is the character he is portraying.I guess that's the " magic " of great acting. They make it look so effortless. And now onto Jack Warden. He is perhaps one of the most under-rated actors in history. A great performance from a great actor.
Back to Paul Newman. The next time you watch one of his movies, watch the pauses...the times when he's not speaking. It's the entire package that makes an actor great. It's the phrasing, the reaction, the eye movements, the pauses and how long he holds them. ( Sure the director has a lot of input too)- but just watch him. What you are witnessing is a STAR in action. As I write this ( June 29, 2006 ) Paul Newman is 81 years old. He may be a little slower, a little more wrinkled, but his acting just gets better with age. ( Watch Empire Falls ). I truly hope he makes more movies. And who knows, perhaps one day I WILL run into him at Trader Joe's or Mario's place. And in true Jackie Gleason form, say to him, " Hubba, Hubba, Hubba. "
And that, my friends, will be no act.

5 out of 5 stars The last gem of Sidney Lumet.......2006-04-18

This outstanding and bold director has always paid special attention respect the dark side of the state of things; like in this case where a lawyer practically out of the game due the drink, decides to assume a delicate case of unorthodox medical praxis. Please notice how Lumet works with grayish tunes in the lawyer ' s office to accent his personal drama.

Go for this emblematic film, where Paul Newman makes a delirious performance.

There is a thinly, thinly, thinly veiled attempt at creating a plot and at acting in this fairly dirty blue movie. Kara (Venesa Talor) is sent to experience bodily pleasure by her alien species, which leads to numerous unconnected, plot-irrelevant encounters with all kinds of buxom babes and buff guys. The pool, the massage parlor, the avant-garde theater--these kooky humans seem to be going at it everywhere! Kara must believe that she's landed not on Earth, but the planet Silicone, but she never seems to kvetch about it. On the plus side the actors are attractive and keep their wooden deliveries at a minimum to allow full enjoyment of the wretched porno-quality soundtrack. Surprisingly, no mention of thanks to Lee Strasberg in the final credits. Plenty o' skin. --Keith Simanton

There is enough of a plot and the acting is good enough that this movie is watchable, even if it is not just the soft porn that you are looking for.

2 out of 5 stars Relaxing viewing time.......2006-07-17

A DVD of clear good photography and quite pleasant to watch but a little embarrasing in family company. Really only suitable for watching in private.

This 1986 fantasy/action thriller has since spawned two sequels, a popular syndicated TV series, numerous comic-book spinoffs, and a loyal (if somewhat oddly obsessive) following of fans. Directed by music video veteran Russell Mulcahy (which explains the dizzying camera work), the original theatrical release made hash of an intriguing story about an "Immortal" from 16th-century Scotland (Christopher Lambert) who time-leaps to modern-day America with his archenemy (Clancy Brown) in hot pursuit. It becomes a battle to the death (yes, Immortals can die), and Lambert seeks survival training from an Immortal mentor played by Sean Connery. Dazzling, energetic, and altogether confusing in its original form, the film has since been released on video, laserdisc, and DVD in this revised widescreen "director's cut," with additional footage, director and producers' commentary, a photo and artwork archive, the original trailer, and an official time line of the film's evolution from script to screen. A must for Highlander fans ... and you know who you are! --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars The Original Highlander - Cult Classic.......2007-07-03

1986's "Highlander" is a good science fiction movie with an exceptionally intriguing concept for a storyline, that a race of immortals live among us and are battling to the last man for an unnamed prize. The concept fueled three big screen sequels and at least two TV series. This is the movie that started it all.

The movie proceeds along parallel story arcs. In one, an antique dealer named Nash, played by Christopher Lambert, battles a series of immortal opponents in modern day New York, while attracting the attention of a curious female police scientist named Brenda (played by Roxanne Hart).

In the second story arc, a Scots Highlander named Connor MacLeod (also played by Lambert) who, after being mortally wounded in battle in 1536, discovers that he is immortal. Connor is sought out by an even older immortal named Ramirez (perfectly played by Sean Connery) who teaches him how to fight and how to avoid losing his head to another immortal. Ramirez prepares Connor for the necessarily lonely life he will have, outliving the mortal humans around him. Ramirez also prepares him for an eventual rematch with Kurgan, the evil seven-foot giant immortal who first wounded Connor in battle.

The two story arcs will come together in New York City in the present. Nash, as Connor now calls himself, finds himself falling in love with Brenda just as his old nemesis Kurgan arrives for "the Gathering", the final battle of immortals. Connor and Kurgan (played by Clancy Brown) will maneuver for a final confrontation at swordpoint that only one of them can survive.

"Highlander" was apparently strapped by a small budget that limited production values and special effects, but the producers more than made up for this with beautiful location shooting in Western Scotland, a magnificent score by QUEEN, and some well-staged action sequences. The interaction between Macleod and Ramirez is priceless, as Ramirez imparts both fighting skill and friendship to the young Macleod.

This movie is highly recommended as an exceptionally entertaining experience to science fiction fans and to fans of the later versions of this storyline.

5 out of 5 stars highlander.......2007-05-12

I have seen this movie a quite a few times. It's one of my favorites. I was suprised with added scenes.

5 out of 5 stars There can be only one!.......2007-05-09

I must admit that this is one of my favorite movies. I saw this when it first came out and loved it. Just imagine the premise, although some people think it is silly, back in the 80's (when I originally saw it) it was cutting edge, the concept I mean. Connor MacLeod is an immortal, who has lived for centuries, shunned by his village and hunted by some. He has outlived his true love and realizes that his gift (i.e., immortality) is a double edged sword..meaning while he lives forever, those he loves will not. Mentored by Ramirez, played by a dashing Sean Connery, Connor sets forth to simple stay alive and protect his secret. Leap forward to modern day New York an we see MacLeod is wealthy and living life as a recluse. Hunted by those who want his power, attracted to a woman who wants to learn his secret, we learn that other immortals are trying to behead him and receive the "quickening" (his immortality and power). Destined to live forever, because he can be killed and yet wake up later, with the exception of beheading of course, Connor sets out to protect his interests, his secret and maybe get the girl. What I think I liked more about the original, than the television series (which was made years later) is that Christopher Lambert has a haunted quality about him that simply takes your breath away. As he roams the Scotland countryside, and takes care of his aging wife, who he loves passionately, you realize that he will be alone forever. Although later sequels were not as good, his eyes (which seem to look into your very soul) will always leave a vivid image of someone who is well troubled and yet hopeful. But what is most powerful about this original is the cinematography...Scotland is absolutely beautiful! So rent it or purchase it, you won't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars Dont be scared, its a decent copy.......2007-03-23

After hearing several reviews of dvd versions of the film I was terrified to purchase any but went with it anyhow. I'm a film freak as well but the quality of the release is acceptable. Its not like they filmed movies back then with crystal clear High Def cameras with 7.1 speaker setups in mind! And who knows what the requirments are for a full digital restoration. You've got to cut it some slack considering the time and budget it was filmed on.

I didnt see it in the theatre so I can't make version comparisons but it is just like I remember seeing it on tv as a kid(minus a scene or two). Its a bit goofy, but its no goofier than any film from that period or any worse quality.
If you remember it from way when or are another Sean Connery fan, go with it, its worth the couple bucks. If you've never seen it then dont get it with expectations of it holding up to this years films. Overall worth what I paid!!

Widely considered, top to bottom, one of the finest musicals in Broadway history, Gypsy got lucky in its film version. Granted, Rosalind Russell doesn't have the bell-ringing voice one craves for in "Everything's Coming Up Roses," but as a domineering stage mom, she's truly fearsome. Trouping through vaudeville with her is her daughter, the future celebrity stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, played by Natalie Wood in all her youthful lusciousness. The production is studio-bound, but this actually fits the unreal show-biz world depicted. The Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim score has no weak spots, and some of the burlesque numbers ("Let Me Entertain You" and the riotous "You Gotta Get a Gimmick") are so authentic, you'd swear they were at least 100 years old. Gypsy is one of those big, somewhat stately musicals that does satisfying credit to its stage origins; no cinematic ground-breaking here, but a swell way to spend a rainy afternoon. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Show, Great Film.......2007-06-19

I am a big fan of "Gypsy", having seen it onstage with Tyne Dale and Bernadette Peters on Broadway and having heard the recordings with those women as well as Angela Lansbury and Ethel Merman many times. This really is one of the best shows of all time, in my view. Clearly, Mama Rose is the main character and the show really rests on the shoulders of the lady playing her. For that reason, I can never understand why casting Rosalind Russell as Rose was ever controversial at all. There can be no doubt that she was a more skilled film actress than Ethel Merman. I think Russell is wonderful in this part: driven, brassy, pushy, comic, over the top, and, often, heartbreaking. Her "Rose's Turn" at the end is just great. She moves beautifully in the musical numbers when she needs too, as well. Sure, she does not sing all of her numbers by herself (her vocals are mixed, not dubbed, with Lisa Kirk's), and that has to be pointed out in an honest review. This was a common Hollywood practice in those days. Does it really make a difference? Not to me. This is not a stage production. We are not really watching a "performance", but the amalgamation of many days and weeks of performing into an edited whole. Kirk matches Russell's vocals well enough that it is not jarring or distracting. That said, Natalie Wood, who was dubbed in West Side Story sings her own numbers here. Her singing is pretty good. She is also gorgeous to look at and very believable as plain Louise who becomes glamorous Gypsy Rose Lee. Karl Malden is also good in the rather boring part of Herbie. The costumes are great, the sets are stagy, but opulent, and the cinematography really sumptuous. This is one of the last big, splashy Hollywood adaptations of a big Broadway hit, full of songs which have become standards, and a story which is moving, funny, and, best of all, ENTERTAINING. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars Gypsy (Natalie Wood, Rosalind Russell).......2007-04-10

This is a classic; I bought it to show the dance and music to my 9-year-old friend who has just begun to learn hip-hop and jazz. (I doubt anyone will be buying "classic hip-hop" movies 50 years from now.) Some people may think that the fact that Gypsy Rose Lee was a stripper would make this unacceptable for children, but I saw it many times as a child, (I know all the words to all the songs, so that's how many times!), and I didn't grow up to be a stripper. My mother explained the age of burlesque to me in the context of history. Frankly, Bratz dolls and children's television and movies are a lot more offensive, inappropriate, and sexually explicit than anything you'll find on this movie.

Natalie Wood, Rosalind Russell and the music of Steven Sondheim are examples of what was and is the best of our culture. It's important that they be passed on to future generations; it's cheating our kids to let them grow up believing that Britney Spears, Hanna Montana, the Olsen twins and their ilk define what was and is GREAT in our movies and entertainment. There hasn't been much written today that has the poignancy and depth of Mama Rose's song at the end of the movie. Watch this movie -- you'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars Natalie at her best........2007-03-29

Great movie. Natalie at her luscious best. A must for any Natalie Wood fan. Just don't buy it from Smokey Mountain Books, they're a rip-off.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful (if not entirely faithful) film version!.......2007-03-11

Let's get this out of the way first. Yes, Rosalind Russell is not a singer. She really does not have the pipes for songs written for someone with the belting ability of Ethel Merman. Yes, she was dubbed for most of the songs by the wonderful Lisa Kirk, save for a bit of "Rose's Turn" and all of "Mr. Goldstone" (though Lisa Kirk makes an excellent effort to mimic Rosalind Russell in her singing). Yes, it is less thrilling to hear the songs sung in a lower key to accomadate Ms. Russell's vocal abilities, which can slightly hurt the film in its more dramatic moments.

But why should we find fault in the parts when the sum of the film is as wonderful as it is? Rosalind Russell completely gives her all for this performance, surpassing what she lacks musically with a fierce determinated attitude worthy of the most infamous stage mother of all time. She infuses her Rose with true passion and vigor while still keeping her grounded in reality, something that perhaps even Ethel Merman would not have been able to effectively pull off on screen. Natalie Wood, doing all her own singing, is perfectly cast as the future Gypsy Rose Lee, both insecure and awkward, yet pulling a very convincing transformation to seductive and classy. The film itself suffers from a problem that plagues many movie musicals of the era, such as occasionally flat staging reminiscent of the show itself, but, again, why quibble? You quickly get so caught up in the story that such things are easily overlooked.

And of course, there is the 1993 Bette Midler version, which is somewhat enjoyable in its own right if a bit campy and fake, but nothing can compare to this classic movie musical complete with the great star turns of Natalie Wood and the always wonderful Rosalind Russell.

4 out of 5 stars Good version of a great show.......2006-08-09

This is one of the "big" 1960s Warner Bros. musicals. While definitely not in the same class as "My Fair Lady" or "The Music Man",it's as good as "Finian's Rainbow" and MUCH better than "Camelot".Leonard Speigelgass's script wisely lets Arthur Laurents' book virtually speak for itself.John Beckman and Ralph Hurst's sets,Orry-Kelly and Howard Shoup's costumes,Harry Stradling's photography, and Frank Perkins's musical direction are all excellent.Mervyn LeRoy's direction is very good,
especially in the dramatic scenes. The cast is excellent, with
Rosalind Russell,Natalie Wood, and Karl Malden particularly
outstanding.
Faith Dane,Roxanne Arlen, and Jean Willes stop the show with a
hilarious "You Gotta Get A Gimmick".All in all,a good 1960s
musical that provides an evening of solid entertainment.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Doris!!!.......2007-05-12

I was hoping Caprice would not live up to its bad rep over the years as one of the worst pictures Doris Day ever made (even she didnt like it and disparaged it), but sadly it does. A costly critical and financial flop made near the end of her film career, Caprice certainly hasnt aged well. The movie cant make up its mind weather its a thriller or a send up of spy movies 60's style. Doris is a bit too old to be playing a Mata Hari, but nothing in this movie makes much sense, anyway. Doris is a sort of cosmetics spy, who is trying to avenge her father's death. The satire of the beauty industry sounds full of promise, but not in this movie. Director Frank Tashlin is so desperate, he even sends up Doris herself several times (having her fall from a balcony while watching the film Caprice starring herself). It's a lot less funny than it sounds. Doris is nothing if not game here, doing all sorts of strenuous stunts. (She threw her back out and had to be hospitalized during filming) Her over the top wardrobe has to be seen to believed. She and co-star Richard Harris have little chemistry and their romance is hard to swallow. On the plus side the title song is one of Day's better ones and the production design is stunning (when studios still had backlots and could recreate the rest of the world without leaving town) There are also 2 well shot ski chases, but they really dont help the story. The ending brings new meaning to the word stupid and will have most people scratching their heads. WTH??? If Caprice were better one could enjoy it for 60's camp, but its only fitfully entertaining. You have to give credit to Doris, though, she does all she can in a losing game to put this one over. It's not her fault the movie is so lame. (she does have a few amusing scenes here and there) Watch it for the fashions and sets and play some Doris Cds after. It'll make you feel better!

5 out of 5 stars Delightfully Doris Day .......2007-05-10

This must be Doris Day's best movie of the 60's. Caprice is The Man Who Knew Too Much with colorful flare (Day's clothing was knock you out). You'll be on the edge of your seat the whole time-guessing and double-guessing. Sheer delight.

3 out of 5 stars Bit Disappointed.......2007-05-07

Not the Doris Day movie I was hoping for.It was a bit too hokey for me, but fashion-wise, it was fabulous: great Doris Day outfits as usual. She really had an eye on how to dress for her movie roles.

4 out of 5 stars campy classic 60's spy comedy/thriller.......2007-04-14

The movie starts out with the murder of an interpole agent on a isolated ski slope. The action moves to Doris Day selling a top secret cold cream formula, and her arrest. Sporting a new mod look Doris Day does 60's comedy in the way that made her famous.Richard Harris costars and helps to make this movie a comedy thriller.

"Roxanne," a 1987 film written by, and starring, the comic genius Steve Martin is yet another film from the fertile 1980's that more people should be happy to know. It's based on the 100-year old French play "Cyrano de Bergerac," by Edmond Rostand. And it costars the long-legged blonde Daryl Hannah, makes good use of Shelley Duvall, Fred Willard, and Michael J. Pollard in supporting roles, was directed by the talented Australian Fred Schepisi. It's set, supposedly, in a pretty Oregon skiing town; actually filmed in a pretty Canadian town; the cinematography presents us with many green and charming vistas.

Its plot follows the original. C.D.(Charlie) Bales (Martin), (note he's got the same initials as the original), is the intelligent, engaging fire chief of the small town; he's got quite a lot going for him, but also, unfortunately, an extremely prominent nose. But he's getting alone fine until astronomy student Roxanne (Hannah) comes to town on a cheap summer sublet. She falls for one of Bales's employees, dumb but handsome Chris (Rick Rossovich) in a big way; but, fortunately, she doesn't really go for dumb. Her friend Dixie (Duvall), tells her she wants Chris's looks with Charlie's brains. And, for a while, that's what she gets, as Charlie writes Chris's love letters and dictates his dialogue.

Many critics have lauded Martin's extraordinary gift for physical comedy, but you've got to see it to believe it. He opens the movie with an energetic strut across town, then has a wonderfully choreographed fight with two rude young male tourists: his tennis racket against their ski poles. He also spends a lot of time climbing up and around houses and trees; and falls down from a tree, claiming he was abducted by aliens, as per a puzzling scene in the original play. The movie also gets a gratifying amount of mileage out of Charlie's fire department: there aren't too many movies that give the viewer any feel for what a character supposedly does to make a living. One criticism: Dixie is not as young or beautiful as Roxanne, but does that mean she had to be turned into an asexual auntie type? Oh well. Romantic comedies don't come much better than this.

4 out of 5 stars Steve Martin was robbed!.......2007-05-31

Steve Martin deserved an Academy Award for "Roxanne", but Hollywood doesn't give Oscar to Comedians. At least he got nominated for a Glob(e). One of the great things about this movie is that there is no "bad guy" - you don't have to root for someone to go down in order for the hero to prevail.

5 out of 5 stars Roxanne.......2007-05-09

Funny, Funny!! This movie has so many one liners you will find yourself quoting them for days!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Steve Martin films.......2007-04-02

Steve Martin's LA Story and the remarkable Roxanne have to be the two best films from his huge body of work.

Having penned the screenplay, Martin cleverly adapts the Cyrano De Bergerac tale to a modern setting, however, manages to maintain the original story line and large personality of Cyrano in the character of C.D. Bales, a fire chief of a beautiful small town in the mountains of British Colombia.

C.D. Bales is an educated, romantic and modern swashbuckling man who can street fight and win with style, possess a sharp wit, can swing and climb rooftops with the agility of a cat and write poetry and love letters that will make any woman swoon with delight. Unfortunately, Bales like De Bergerac, has a nose the size of a small tree, resulting in his shyness in the matters of love.

C.D. falls head over heels for Roxanne, a visiting astronomer with alluring beauty and a keen mind but feels his appearance, a nose the size of Kansas, will prevent any relationship.

A handsome man, Chris, (Rick Rossovich) joins the fire station to help train the volunteer crew of town misfits but cannot talk to women. Bales' woos Roxanne through Chris with love letters and poetry, thus Chris wins her heart. This unusual situation turns complicated, (similar to De Bergerac) when the masquerade starts to come undone to hilarious results.

Australian director, Fred Schepisi, brings Martin's adaptation of De Bergerac together in an entertaining modern romantic comedy that even today, despite the dated soundtrack, continues to be funny.

Some movies deserve only to be seen once though Roxanne can be pulled from the cabinet and viewed time and again as it remains a classic tale of the 80's & the 18th century.

Description

Richard Dreyfuss and Holly Hunter lead an all-star cast in this critically acclaimed tale of life, love and chance. Jilted by her boyfriend, Renata (Hunter), the oldest daughter of a close-knit Italian-American family, falls in love with Sam (Dreyfuss), an abrasive and forcefully charming businessman. But neither her spirited sister (Laura San Giacomo), her down-to-earth father (Danny Aiello), or her supportive mother (Gena Rowlands) can tolerate Sam's often obnoxious intrusion into their family circle. Aggressive and overwhelmingly generous, Sam proceeds - with only the best intentions - to disrupt and nearly demolish Renata's family. Love, humor and forgiveness go once more around as the Bellas try to balance Renata's happiness with their family's survival in this funny and often touching story, directed by Lasse Hallstrom.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Yuck! A comedy that morphs into a meoldrama.......2007-06-13

Perhaps "Beaches" for the family melodrama generation, this movie starts out with great promise as a screwball comedy, with Richard Dreyfuss well cast as a hyperbolic and wealthy salesman who meets lifetime failure Holly Hunter. She switches nameplates so she can sit next to him at a motivational session dinner, they meet, become entranched with each other, and the romance is on. Then she takes him home to her Boston family which doesn't like the guy. All the ingredients are there for an outstanding comedy!

After this beginning, the movies treads downhill almost immediately, turning to a bluster of really inappropriate profanity, bad direction, overacting and outright idiocy. You should hear the Georgian Hunter pretend to sound like she's from Boston! It wasn't any better for New Jersey-born Laura San Giacomo, who played Hunter's sister. Andy why in heaven's name did the producers decide the family had to be Italian...in Boston, home of a large Irish population? And then act like they are Jewish?

A lot of the accents were nonsense but, poor enunciation aside, it was the ridiculously contrived plot twists that really sunk this turkey. It's fine that the family would be put off by new uppity rich boyfriend Dreyfuss. But is it OK that the movie should turn in a melodramatic direction? About 45 minutes through what started out as a promising comedy, this turns into "Ordinary People" with more tugging of emotions, guilt and cries of the Boston family being torn apart than Carter's used to have little pills!

I was frankly sickened by the direction this film went after such a strong beginning. Here are all these great character actors gathered together and not a single one distinguished themselves in this bomb. Gena Rowlands was extremely poorly directed, giving just about nothing of which she is capable aside from a scene where she wrestles a microphone away from the boyfriend at a wake. The ending was especially callous, conventional and sickening, I thought, even though it summed up the poor direction this film went after a strong start.

The one great element of this film I never realized before -- Danny Aiello is a fabulous singer with a wonderful tenor voice (assuming he did the singing himself; the credits included a long line of singers you didn't see on screen. The movie featured a pretty good soundtrack, too. Aiello was cast against type here as a strong father figure, opposite his typical portrayal as a lowlife, gangster or mob member. Like the rest of the cast, he did some unthinkable things in his role, then made up for them in silly and conventional ways in the penultimate scene.

I thought a movie had to feature a mostly Jewish cast to become as sophomorically melodramatic as "Once Around" becomes. I think this is only for people that want a good cry during the movies. There is nothing here for anyone that wants to be entertained via comedy or intelligence. Beware the promise that this is a comedy, for it's not.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2007-05-13

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen.

I loved everything about it: the acting, directing, and screenplay are top-notch. Richard Dreyfus knocked me out with his brilliant, ought-to-get-an-Academy-Award performance as the Lithuanian suitor. He is so intensely outgoing, he wants so much to embrace and touch people that it hurts to watch him. He is vibrant, enthusiastic, life-loving and warm, but one of the pivotal themes of the movie is that he is socially very clumsy. Typically, in a social situation Dreyfuss gives it his all with zeal and falls flat on his face.

There are equally brilliant performances by Danny Aiello as the bride-to-be's father and Holly Hunter as the bride to be.

The story is about an Italian-American woman from an upper-middle-class family in Winchester, Massachusetts. I mention the location because one of the charms of the movie is its attachment to place. Not only does Holly Hunter carry off the Boston accent perfectly (often attempted, seldom achieved), but the subtle social nuances are embroidered in the story. If you are not from this area, unfortunately, they will be lost on you. If you are, it will be a rich experience. Holly meets Richard Dreyfuss on a trip to Aruba. Dreyfuss falls madly in love with her, and she starts to fall in love with him. They see each other back in the States and decide to marry. A source of tension and drama is that Holly Hunter and Richard Dreyfuss are "odd ducks." The other members of the family have always handled their rara avis daughter with love and understanding (with the possible exception of her younger sister). But the pair of them start to rub these traditionalists the wrong way, and to an escalating degree.

One of the most affecting moments is when Holly Hunter's family gives a memorial service for Danny Aiello's mother. It is a large gathering of the family. Close friends and relatives get up on stage and make heartfelt speeches.

When Danny Aiello steps on stage to sing "Mama," the room goes quiet. When he finishes, everyone is overcome.

At that moment, Richard Dreyfuss insists on taking the stage to make his own speech. Danny Aiello's wife gasps, because she knows that somehow this would absolutely be just the wrong thing, perhaps the straw that breaks the camel's back after a series of so many resoundingly off-key gestures so many times by Dreyfuss.

But I found myself rooting for him and his bride when I thought the director and screenwriter didn't want me to. I thought they meant Mr. and Mrs. Danny Aiello and family to be the heroes and Holly Hunter and Richard Dreyfuss to be--not the villains, but the losers, the misfits, the inappropriate ones.

I won't tell you how the movie turns out, but it had me emoting and emoting and emoting and sometimes thinking and it had me to-ing and fro-ing, sometimes confused, and at one time sobbing deep, aching, profound sobs.

I must mention that in Dreyfuss's brilliant characterization of a Lithuanian man, he created a Lithuanian man. I don't know if it was his idea or the director's, but two devices that were used so brilliantly were music and religion, when Dreyfuss marries Holly Hunter and when their first child is born.

The marriage ceremony takes place in a real Lithuanian church with a real Lithuanian priest singing the real Lithuanian mass, which is chanted in a deep basso voice, something like the Orthodox Russian mass. The scene in the hospital room with Holly and the baby is totally awesome. There is beatific Holly, holding her newborn child, and in comes Richard Dreyfuss bringing a small chorus of Lithuanian women folk singers in beautiful folk costumes replete with flowers and embroidery. They sing several of the most beautiful a capella folk tunes. It is a magic moment.

If you like character driven movies, I can't recommend this movie highly enough.

4 out of 5 stars Well, I Liked It At Least........2007-03-11

Charming little romantic-comedy that's been sadly overlooked throughout the last decade and a half. I don't really know why exactly as most of the actors in the film have been well known academy award winners, and or academy award nominees, at some point in their careers. Well-acted, well-written (though they could have done without nearly as much profanity considering it's a romantic-comedy after all), and most of all sentimental -- and not of the hokey, nauseating kind for a change -- this is one flick that comes highly recommended in my book. Though as for the DVD release of this film be forewarned that it is absolutely bare-bones in terms of offering zero extras and not even one trailer! However, the transfer and sound were pretty crisp and clear. Overall, it's not too awful bad for about nine or ten bucks if you you ask me.

5 out of 5 stars it's all about the talent.......2007-01-09

there are some movies you can watch over and over again, and get something out of it every time. the cast, to me, is what makes the movie. the best actors. it works so well. love it.

2 out of 5 stars Watch your step!.......2006-12-11

I too was misled by these reviews, and I too am puzzled by the apparently sincere expressions of enthusiasm for this movie.

Maybe you have to be Italian or Lithuanian, but I watch a lot of real Italian movies (the ones with subtitles), and they are not like this.

I think that Dreyfus's character was inconsistent. He acted like a sleaze, and then he acted like a great guy, totally sincere, etc. Then he acted like a sleaze, flattering people, snowing them with gifts, etc. I simply think the screenwriter was trying for something he couldn't bring off.

Similarly with the movie as a whole. This is not simply a feel-good family, although obviously the screenwriter was trying to paint such a family. There needed to be more interaction than the stereotyped hugs and such. Something was missing.

Also, the story went nowhere. There was no plot, and very little story, and it lasted a long, long time. And the movie had nothing else to offer a viewer.

I would say, be very, very careful before buying this movie. I don't think it was overlooked. I think it was looked at and turned down.

Product Description

The funeral business gets a giant raspberry in this wickedly wacky, resplendently ridiculous farce based on Evelyn Waugh's macabre comic masterpiece and directed with inspired verve by Tony Richardson (Tom Jones). But the American way of death isn't the film's only target: sex, greed, religion and mother love are also in the crosshairs of its satirical shots. Robert Morse plays a bemused would-be poet who gets entangled with an unctuous cemetery entrepreneur (Jonathan Winters), a mom-obsessed mortician (Rod Steiger) and other bizarre characters played by such adept farceurs as John Gielgud, Robert Morley, Tab Hunter, Milton Berle, James Coburn and Liberace. If The Loved One doesn't make you laugh, call the undertaker!

In olden days, as Cole Porter famously observed, a mere glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking. So it's heartening to report that this 1965 black comedy still delivers on its billing as "the motion picture with something to offend everyone." Tony Richardson, fresh off the liberating Tom Jones, brings Evelyn Waugh's self-described "little nightmare" to the screen with all its sacrilegious shocks (and then some!) intact, courtesy of screenwriters Terry Southern (Dr. Strangelove) and Christopher Isherwood. Robert Morse stars as Dennis Barlow, an Englishman abroad and a fish out of water in Southern California. Stumbling across the Hollywood landscape like a cross between Candide and Jerry Lewis. Barlow gets a unique perspective of the American experience when he finds employment at the Happier Hunting Ground, a ramshackle pet cemetery, and the flipside of the fabulously vulgar Whispering Glades. In a virtuoso dual role, Jonathan Winters costars as glad-handing Happier Hunting Grounds proprietor Harry, whose brother, Whispering Glades' Blessed Reverend, has some out-of-this-world plans for the "Loved Ones." The mad, mad, mad mad cast also includes John Gielgud as Dennis's ill-fated expatriate uncle, an artist unceremoniously booted from the movie studio where he has worked for 31 years; Anjanette Comer as Aimee, a Whispering Glades cosmetician torn between Dennis and embalmer Mr. Joyboy (an unforgettable Rod Steiger), who registers his broken heart on the faces of his corpses; a teenage Paul Williams as a science prodigy; Liberace as a funeral salesman peddling eternal flames both "perpetual or standard"; Milton Berle and Margaret Leighton as "a typical well-adjusted American couple" whose deceased dog puts a crimp in their dinner plans; and even Jamie Farr, seen fleetingly as a waiter. The Loved One anticipates the "New Hollywood" with its naturalistic cinematography by Haskell Wexler (Medium Cool) and "anything goes" sensibility (the dinner scene with Joyboy and his obese mother would not be out of place in a John Waters movie). By turns creepy and grotesquely funny, The Loved One will bury you. --Donald Liebenson

4 out of 5 stars sublime antics.......2007-06-28

all sorts of tongue & cheek delights. satire, slapstick, grotesque, all I could ever want in a comedy. Little outdated though.

5 out of 5 stars Dark humor at its best - rbatin.......2007-05-12

This DVD is not for everyone, but funny if you can get into it. Robert Morse
does his usual fine job in this role. Mr. Joyboy's mother has some of the darkest yet funniest scenes in the movie. If you like your humor with a sick twist, you will like this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of Satire.......2007-04-28

Humor, unlike tragedy, is a very individual affair. Hamlet lasts whether played as period piece or with costumes closer to modern. The Shakespearean comedies frequently require editing for performance plus modern costume. Humor is fleeting and often linked to time and place.

This film will last well for those who found it the perfect send-up of America in the 1960s, through a British eye. The funeral industry is only centerpiece to a number of satiric targets including the idolization of the American "mom," space race mania, filling the south California mudhills with homes, pet cemetaries, romance-advice columns, movie cowboys, and much else. Some of this was new then; some of it we are now used to, some is less prominent today. I still think this is simply one of the funniest movies ever made. Others will not get it, for whatever reason. Cultural referrents change very fast, and in our time faster than ever.

What cannot be diminished are a baker's dozen of comic actors at very top form -- Jonathon Winters, for one, was never better; Rod Steiger's Dr. Joyboy is simply inspired. Young Robert Morse's performance grows on me with every viewing as the befuddled young British transplant to southern California and his strange epic effort to simply bury the dead. This black and white film is also well edited and superbly paced.

4 out of 5 stars What the ...?.......2007-04-12

It takes a while to get going, but once it does, it's possibly the most bizarre movie I've ever seen. Mr. Joyboy's mother steals every scene she's in.

2 out of 5 stars Not very good.......2007-04-12

My husband and I didn't like this very much. I had seen it years and years ago and remembered it as being funny. It wasn't really, it's too outdated.

The fourth Pokémon feature follows the pattern set by the previous three--and falls into the same traps. The TV series depicts the modest adventures of Pokémon trainer Ash Ketcham and his friends Brock and Misty as they roam an imaginary world, fighting matches and making friends. The features add elaborate CG effects that don't mesh with the flat, drawn characters, and over-scaled threats that feel beyond Ash's abilities to resolve. Forty years ago, Sam, a young trainer, meets the 251st Pokémon Celebi (it looks like Tinkerbell with a goldfish for a head). To escape a mean hunter, Celebi brings Sam to the present day, where they meet Ash & Company. They also meet the evil Iron Mask Marauder who's supposed to be a member of Team Rocket, but who's much nastier than the comically inept Jessie, James, and Meowth. The Marauder corrupts Celebi with a "dark ball" and forces it to create a monster out of trees, branches, etc., that is blatantly copied from the Night Walker in Princess Mononoke. Ash and his friends eventually save the day, the Pokémon, and the forest--but it all feels like we've been there/done that. --Charles Solomon
